The paper focuses on the moral portrait of modern Russian entrepreneurs which is currently subject to a drastic change. A historical overview of Russian entrepreneurial traditions is provided. Entrepreneur moral has always played a vital role in economy development and will always play. Moreover, business people values affect the institutional interaction at micro-, mezo- and macro-levels. To highlight the entrepreneurial culture principles of Russian entrepreneurs from historical point of view, and show illiteracy of modern students in economics in the issues of Russian entrepreneurship history. Methods and methodological units of research are content analysis, culture genesis, empirical study. The poll of the first and second-year students of two leading universities was conducted, and its results revealed ignorance of to-be economists on the issues of Russian entrepreneurship history. Hence, our students would not be able to follow the traditions of Russian entrepreneurship. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the theoretical and methodological justification of moral qualities of Russian entrepreneurs of the 19th-20thcenturies and their applicability/impossibility of use by modern entrepreneurs in conditions of informatization and digitalization. Research results can be used by Universities for tailoring their educational programmes for to-be economists and entrepreneurs.

High-technology new firms are an important source of strong economic value and spillovers. It is therefore theoretically and practically important to understand the antecedents to their creation. This study focuses on understanding attitudinal, situational and personal characteristics associated with entrepreneurial activity by academic inventors. We surveyed patent holders and examined differences between entrepreneur inventors (EIs) and non-entrepreneur inventors (NEIs) in many dimensions. In demographic variables, EIs are more likely male, who have had a career in academic institutions. They were actively involved in technology development with grants used to validate the commercial potential of the technology and in a large number of contacts in the industry. They were also involved in business activities outside of their employment that required technical skills. EIs who had commercialization support from their regions were more likely to become entrepreneurs. The ones who exhibited innovative behavior were also more likely to become entrepreneurs. We used these differences to predict inventors who were more likely to become entrepreneurs using these demographic, personal characteristics, situational and attitudinal descriptors using discriminant functions with very good success. The model to forecast the inventors’ likely path to commercializing their technologies can have practical implications for universities and public policy-makers.

The paper aims to review the current state of the knowledge in an attempt to renew the interest in studying cognitive side of entrepreneurial ethics. The paper explores how the two streams of the literature — entrepreneurial cognition and entrepreneurial ethics — can possibly be integrated to guide future research. It also reviews the literature at the intersection of entrepreneurial cognitions and ethics. In doing so, the paper draws upon the extant literature to propose a set of questions for future research. Given the ethical implications of entrepreneurial behavior, this paper calls for future interdisciplinary work among entrepreneurial cognition scholars and business ethicists. The extant literature has generally focused on exploring the linkages among entrepreneurial cognitions, moral awareness, and moral judgment. It appears that relatively sparse attention is paid to explore the underlying cognitive patterns of an entrepreneur's actions pertaining to unethical business practices. This gap in the literature at the intersection of cognitions and ethics holds significant potential for future research. The proposed questions for future research include the following: How do cognitive biases and heuristics make an entrepreneur more susceptible to immoral judgment and reasoning? Which of the cognitive schemas is more likely to enhance moral intentions of entrepreneurs? How does distributed cognition shape socially responsible entrepreneurial behavior? Do entrepreneurs prefer rule-based or cost/benefit-based reasoning approach while making moral judgment? Which of the cognitive dimensions of socially responsible behavior — utilitarianism, just, and rights — is more common among entrepreneurs in developed countries in comparison to the entrepreneurs in developing and emerging economies? Do immigrant and/or ethnic entrepreneurs experience identity ambiguity and how does it relate to their unethical actions? How does the level of motivation affect an entrepreneur's reliance on heuristics rather than employing a systematic response to process information for ethical judgment? The proposed questions potentially offer insights into the way in which entrepreneurial cognitions and entrepreneurial ethics are interconnected. Entrepreneurship scholars may enrich their future research efforts by exploring how might insights from entrepreneurial ethics better inform the theoretical developments of entrepreneurial cognitions.

Drawing from a qualitative empirical study of Canadian entrepreneurs, we seek to understand the nature of entrepreneurial thinking. More specifically, we analyse entrepreneurs’ cognitive capacity to mitigate the risk inherent in an uncertain future and overcome low community expectations of entrepreneurial success. We introduce the notion of ‘magical thinking’, an emergent construct that refers to a cluster of beliefs that maintain the motivation and focus of entrepreneurs by transmuting agency from a rational-scientific context in which the entrepreneur imposes his or her will on the environment, to a spiritual context in which the entrepreneur perseveres by remaining true to trust in a wider cosmological belief system. We identify three key elements of magical thinking – finding one’s path, obtaining the answers and being at peace.

Purpose This study aims to focus on implementing frugal innovation and its principles by social entrepreneurs to face the challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. The research paper discusses the case of an Indian social entrepreneur who works for menstrual health and hygiene of unprivileged and rural women in India. The social entrepreneur’s constant endeavor is to create an ecosystem to ensure rural women’s economic and social upliftment through financial inclusion and livelihood training. When faced with the COVID-19 pandemic, the social entrepreneur re-purposed the manufacturing process to produce masks that were the need of the hour. Design/methodology/approach The research paper is qualitative and follows an inductive case study approach. The underlying principles of frugal innovation are established through content analysis of the social entrepreneur’s interviews and her team members. Findings The study discusses how adversity can be an opportunity for social entrepreneurs by implementing frugal innovation principles, i.e. re-use, re-purpose, re-combine and rapidity, in times of crisis. Research limitations/implications One of the major limitations of this study is that it is based on a single case study, as, in the current scenario, this case appeared to be the most suitable one. There is no way to generalize the assumptions of this model. Researchers will have to study the phenomena of frugal innovation in adversity across multiple cases in the future. Also, the study is based on a single emerging economy, i.e. India. Further research may be carried out with such cases from other countries. Practical implications The proposition of this research paper will help new and established social entrepreneurs understand that the four principles of frugal innovation and their practical application by a social entrepreneur. This will act as a guiding light for the present and future entrepreneurs regarding how one can respond to a crisis. This will also help advance our understanding of the distinct ways in which social entrepreneurs’ activities can help society in times of crisis. The findings of this research paper provide timely implications for social entrepreneurs. To respond efficiently to various crises, it is important to consider its effect on social entrepreneurship. Social implications The research paper shows that the social enterprise has implemented frugal innovation principles to manufacture the COVID-19 protection items supplied through existing supply chain networks. Also, a social entrepreneur is not intimidated by the sudden changes in the business environment; instead, they look at the situation as an opportunity to do something new. They are always willing to take the risk to innovate a solution that will address people’s problems. frugal innovation, due to its highly collaborative nature and its ability to make the most from limited resources, is the only way social entrepreneurs can create an inclusive, secure and sustainable future. Originality/value There are several challenges in social entrepreneurship, especially in emerging economies like India. During the pandemic, availability of resources was the major challenge, due to which social entrepreneurs had to find solutions through frugal innovation. This paper provides the practical application of the four principles of frugal innovation implemented by a social enterprise to manufacture and supply Covid protection items. It also presents the practical and managerial implications of the principles of frugal innovation by social entrepreneurs in low resource settings.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to help us understand social entrepreneurs’ lived experiences, reflecting the comprehensive entrepreneurial processes that encompass their past, present and future. Design/methodology/approach A narrative approach was used to explore the meaning of experiences in social entrepreneurs’ professional lives through the stories retold and restructured by social entrepreneurs. A total of 11 social entrepreneurs in the Midwest region of the USA were interviewed. Findings The authors identified three time-sequential themes: past (looking backward at the origin), present (living life as a social entrepreneur) and future (looking forward). Seven sub-themes emerged, revealing social entrepreneurs’ aspiration, self-knowledge, identity-defining moments, their sustainability-oriented leadership and how they build an organizational structure, partnership and handle the burden of work and the organization. Practical implications The findings offer useful information for future social entrepreneurs as they can learn from the perspectives of experienced social entrepreneurs in terms of what to prepare for and expect so they can achieve their full entrepreneurial potential. It can also aid in further development of social entrepreneur curricula in business and non-business schools. Originality/value The existing literature does not portray sufficient detail about how social entrepreneurs live the lives they have created and chosen to understand their lived experiences. This study also provides a comprehensive definition of social entrepreneurship, incorporating “collective perspective” with a mentality of “it’s not about me, it’s about us”.

Entreprneurship is one of economic indicator in a country, whereas the entrepreneur would make a job impact to many people. Entrepreneurship could not be implemented without the willingness and capability to make effort. An entrepreneur must have a vision of business opportunities as well, especially in health industry in Indonesia in forthcoming days. The question is on how an entrepreneur could success in health business relating to his or her competencies, experiences, and innovation learning in which also affect innovation capability. This paper studies about some successful Indonesian entrepreneurs in health business whom make an inspiration and input to entrepreneur candidates or existing entrepreneurs. This paper is supported by theoretical review to find the research model’s variables for future research, which might be in empirical study. This paper used judgement sampling method to Indonesian entrepreneurs in health business. The interesting issue is that the competency and success of the entrepreneurs do not always relate to formal education they got, but how the entrepreneurs implement the innovation way in their business. There are some gaps in this paper, whereas how the similiar research could take a good sample and exploit the research design well in the future to get a good and accurate research.

Entrepreneurship is the key to a functioning society and global economy. To be entrepreneurial means not only to see and discover opportunities, but also to develop and refine these opportunities. There is evidence saying that entrepreneurship is not equal for men and women. Sweden is considered a strong and stable country with values that promote gender equality, but even in this country there are societal structures and phenomena that sometimes hinders female entrepreneurs from reaching the same success as male entrepreneurs. The aim of this thesis is therefore to explore Swedish female entrepreneurs and the challenges they face when conducting international business. Furthermore the thesis will try to explore what challenges they face in foreign market entry due to their gender as well as try to provide future female entrepreneurs with information on how to avoid or handle the challenges they might face due to their gender. There is a gap in literature regarding this subject.  The reviewed literature presents the international business environment and internationalization as well as entrepreneurship and the opportunities thereof. It also presents the occurrence of gender inequality in business. The conceptual framework is to illustrate how all parts are connected to the subject and to each other like a circular cycle. To ensure thorough research a qualitative method with an abductive approach is used. Both primary and secondary data have been used. The empirical data was collected through interviews with five Swedish international female entrepreneurs from different industries. The analysis was made by cross examination of the empirical data and the literature. Female entrepreneurs face challenges in international business but can often choose to use it as an advantage. There are social structures that need to change for the business environment to become more equal both in Sweden and internationally.

Background: Entrepreneurship plays an indispensable role in today’s society. Especially, the creation of new ventures promotes economic growth and new opportunities. Hereof, Sweden is viewed as a role-model, since it is one of the most innovative and entrepreneurial active countries in the world. Almost 6% of Sweden’s inhabitants are currently characterized as nascent entrepreneurs and thus, are engaged in early entrepreneurial activities without having started an official venture yet. Considering the fact that nascent entrepreneurs have no prior entrepreneurial experience while facing uncertain environments, they have to evaluate the attractiveness of new venture ideas and decide whether they are worth to pursue or to drop them. Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to explore the evaluation approach of nascent entrepreneurs in the light of new venture ideas. More precisely, we want to investigate what kind of approaches they make use of when evaluating the attractiveness of those ideas and their motives behind the approaches. Method: This thesis is of qualitative nature while following an inductive approach and conducting a multiple case study with ten cases of different nascent entrepreneurs. The data is collected through semi-structured interviews, which were conducted in personal face-to-face meetings. For analysing the empirical findings, we engaged in within-case and cross-case analyses, where we identified and analysed common patterns and differences across the cases. Conclusion: All of the research respondents apply a variety of evaluation approaches, where they make use of their cognition as a means of judging and assessing the attractiveness of new venture ideas. Besides utilizing their social network, existing knowledge and future estimations, all nascent entrepreneurs are using heuristic rules-of-thumb for evaluating the idea attractiveness. Thereby, we identified Passion, Monetary Incentives, Resources and Market Potential as the most outstanding rules-of-thumb in the clear majority of the cases.

Background: Environmental problems are a worrying phenomenon, and there is a call for action. One way to face these problems lies in sustainable entrepreneurship. There is an increase in sustainability-oriented incubators supporting these sustainable entrepreneurs on their entrepreneurial journey, using various support systems. However, there is little research available about the support systems sustainability-oriented incubators offer, the importance of these support systems, and the influence of entrepreneurial stages. Purpose: With our study, we provide sustainability-oriented incubator managers with insights into the importance of different support systems, the frequency in which they are offered and the role of different entrepreneurial stages. This allows sustainability-oriented incubators to support their tenants better and, therefore, positively influence sustainable entrepreneurship.  Method: A single case study method has been applied by using a mixed-method approach of qualitative semi-structured interviews and a quantitative questionnaire which was filled in prior to the interviews by the participants. In total, nine participants were interviewed, consisting of seven incubator tenants and two incubator managers. Conclusion: This research has found a high level of importance and frequency of business model support and market research support, irrespective of the different entrepreneurial stages. This implies a constant reiteration process from sustainable entrepreneurs, demanding a strong-intervention role from the sustainability-oriented incubator. Furthermore, this research has found the shortcomings in using the effectuation model for analysing entrepreneurial stages and suggests a different application.

China’s entrepreneurs had previously been labeled class enemies and nearly persecuted into extinction. The re-emergence of private entrepreneurs as a significant and increasingly coherent economic and political force has generated much interest among policy makers and scholars inside and outside China. Some see entrepreneurs as the vanguard of an emerging civil society, which is seen by many as a necessary prerequisite for political development and democratization in particular. In China, the business associations are among the rare organizations available for collective action, and recent research suggests that these associations occasionally act on behalf of their members against the interests of the state, at least on business related issues. Others go even further, predicting that the same people who are promoting and benefiting from economic liberalization will also advocate political democratization. China’s private entrepreneurs are therefore receiving increased attention-by outside observers and China’s leaders alike- because they are potential “king makers” between the state and the “critical realm” of civil society Although their political views are essentially compatible with local officials, what could make that change? The party has adopted the two-pronged strategy of creating corporatist links between the state and the business sector and co-opting individual entrepreneurs into the CCP. This strategy has been successful so far in pre-empting demands for increased autonomy or citizenship rights. Whether it will continue to be successful in the future may determine whether private entrepreneurs remain in the “non-critical realm” of civil society or use their organizations to promote collective action on behalf of overtly political issues. The fact that private entrepreneurs are not engaging in collective action for political reform does not negate their importance or collective identity. As in other countries, China’s entrepreneurs are focused primarily on business interests, rather than overtly political ones. They believe local officials are as much a part of the solution as they are part of the problem. This fits nicely with the idea that a market dynamic is leading to the formation of a non-critical sphere of civil society that is not necessarily a threat to the state, but is largely beneficial to it. Private entrepreneurs are neither the cause of nor the solution to the party’s problem. But private entrepreneurs are the product of the party’s reform policies and ironically proof of their success: the prosperity they enjoy was made possible because of the post-Mao reforms. Although private entrepreneurs contribute to the party’s goal of economic development, growth alone will not save the CCP. Most observers expect that a thriving market economy and a Leninist political system will inevitably prove to be incompatible, but the CCP’s strategy has been to try to make them coexist. Private entrepreneurs embody the contradictory elements of the party’s reform policies.

„Training Future Entrepreneurs – Developing and Assessing Sustainability Competencies in Entrepreneurship Education“. Doctoral diss., 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.57143.

abstract: Employee-owned businesses, benefit corporations, social enterprises, and other sustainability entrepreneurship innovations are responding to challenges such as climate change, economic inequalities, and unethical business behavior. Academic programs to date, however, often fall short in sufficiently equipping students with competencies in sustainability entrepreneurship – from a coherent set of learning objectives, through effective and engaging pedagogies, to rigorous assessment of learning outcomes. This dissertation contributes to bridging these gaps. The first study proposes a process-oriented and literature-based framework of sustainability entrepreneurship competencies. It offers a general vision for students, faculty, and entrepreneurs, as well as for the design of curricula, courses, and assessments. The second study presents an exploration into the nature of sustainability entrepreneurship courses, with a focus on teaching and learning processes. Using pioneering courses at Arizona State University, the study analyzes and compares the links between learning objectives, pedagogies, and learning outcomes. Based on document analysis and semi-structured interviews with course instructors, the study identifies cognitive apprenticeship from input processing to experimentation, constructive alignment from learning objectives to assessments, and curriculum-level coordination across courses as key success factors of sustainability entrepreneurship education. The result of this study can inform instructors and researchers in applying and further substantiating effective educational models for future entrepreneurs. The third study addresses the key question of competence assessment: what are reliable tools for assessing students’ competence in sustainability entrepreneurship? This study developed and tested a novel tool for assessing students’ competence in sustainability entrepreneurship through in-vivo simulated professional situations. The tool was in different settings and evaluated against a set of criteria derived from the literature. To inform educators in business and management programs, this study discusses and concludes under which conditions this assessment tool seems most effective, as well as improvement for future applications of the tool.

"Entrepreneurs, as the most active social group sensitive to public mood, perhaps feel the changes in the time of life in a digital society (time pressure illusion) most of all. On the other hand, the very internal temporal organization of a person involved in entrepreneurial activity can determine the characteristics of his or her mind and behavior in the economic sphere. The aim of the study is to reveal the impact of the psychological time of the representatives of small businesses on their economic minds. The study involves 109 representatives of small businesses in various fields (wholesale and retail trade, education, tourism, consulting, production, etc.), registered in the Chelyabinsk region and operating in the Russian Federation (mean age 34.9, 42% male). The respondents completed electronic forms of Inventory of Time Value as an Economic Resource (Usunier), Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory, Attitudes towards Time (Nuttin), and Inventory of Polychronic Values (Bluedorn). To diagnose the features of the economic mind of entrepreneurs, the Economic Attitudes Questionnaire (Deyneka & Zabelina, 2018) was used. Regression analysis showed that certain components of psychological time (positive attitude to the past, present and future, the value of time as an economic resource) determine the formation of constructive economic attitudes of small business owners, namely the value of independent economic achievements, willingness to invest, unwillingness to sacrifice vocation and health for money, financial optimism. Thus, the lack of fixation on past failures, a positive attitude towards the present and the future, the ability to transfer time into money create a psychological foundation for the formation of entrepreneurs' attitudes in economic life. The results can be used in the consulting of the future entrepreneurs."

It is accepted by most agencies that enterprise education is important for students and for the economy, however it is often difficult to measure the effectiveness of this education as effects can take many years to be shown. We have collected qualitative data from over 300 alumni entrepreneurs, reflecting on their time at the Univeristy of Manchester, which suggested that their experiences of enterprise education were mixed and that they would have benefitted from more practical courses rather than more academically interesting topics. For example they wanted training on how to register a company, understanding tax, employment law and basic book keeping, rather than how to generate ideas and theories of innovation and entrepreneurship. There is a clear need to shift some enterprise education to cater for those who have an idea now and need practical advice, or may have an idea in the future from their subject area and need to know how to proceed formally. On curricular courses are more likely to be academically and theory driven, especially with the need to provide appropriate assessment for students, whilst it is often the extra curricular activities which provide more practical details in how to start a business, which may not be open to all students, or may not be well advertised. Since many students don’t start a business until later in life, with activity peaking in the 35-60 year old age group, they often do not take advantage of these opportunities while at university, should they be available. Our paper shows there needs to be a better mix of practical with academic courses to provide for alumni entrepreneurs’ needs to allow them to start a business whether it be straight form university or later on in life.

Tourism sector is an area that offers very attractive opportunities for young entrepreneurs. It is possible to set up tourism businesses with comparatively low capital and by benefiting from various supports. Young entrepreneurs who have innovative ideas and creative products may provide financial support from their families, benefit from Turkish Organization of Small and Medium Enterprises Development (KOSGEB) supports; use credit in appropriate conditions, or collaborate with the owners of capital who want to invest in the tourism sector. When the tourism literature is examined, the subject of young entrepreneurs in tourism has not been observed wide enough. In this context, the main purpose of this study is to specify enterprising tendencies and personality traits of undergraduate tourism students. It is thought to be important for offering expedient recommendations to young entrepreneurs. In the scope of the study, a survey is conducted to identify entrepreneurial characteristics, enterprising tendencies and personality traits of tourism students who would be graduated in the near future. Data were obtained from questionnaire responses and analyzed by and quantitative techniques. It is identified that there are correlations between (i) calculated risk taking and openness, (ii) need for achievement and conscientiousness and extraversion, (iii) locus of control and conscientiousness and extraversion and openness, and (iv) creative tendency and openness. Alongside some significant differences are stated for enterprising tendencies according to demographic variables. The results were reached by interpreting the findings and some suggestions were developed for graduate candidates based on the results.

In Kyrgyzstan, are 10 399 small businesses and 710 medium-sized enterprises. Most of them are headed by entrepreneurs who, starting from scratch, overcome countless obstacles, as many entrepreneurs do not have the notion and skills in doing business. But, nevertheless, there is a positive tendency in entrepreneurs to get knowledge on the legal conditions of the enterprise, taxation, accounting, analysis of their financial condition, and business planning. All this knowledge is necessary, but they cover the microlevel, while for an adequate, sustainable and profitable development there is an objective need for analyzing the macro environment of the business. In this report, we will consider the relevance of the use of certain marketing tools with which you can identify the threats and opportunities facing domestic business, as well as assess the impact of global factors that predetermine the future development of the business environment. Research in this area is currently being carried out by the Institute of Economics of the National Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic within the framework of the Government Development Program "Jany Doordo - kyrk kadam (2018-2023) Kadam 8" Support for Small and Medium Enterprises.

Purpose – this article presents empirical evidence of the creation of clusters of value that emerge when creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship are developed together. These clusters contribute to welfare creation and, to the reduction of youth unemployment. Research methodology – this paper aims to conduct an exploratory qualitative research study through multiple case studies. Findings – findings show the relevance of emotions in social initiatives, the role of teams and experts that recognizes innovations, the relevance of stakeholders wealth to motivate employees and the importance of linking the day-to-day challenges to local apprenticeship programs, as creativity is closely related to these daily lives and everyday concerns. Research limitations – this research paper has some limitations because multiple cases studies not allow for generalizations. An extension of this study encompassing a greater number of case studies could confirm findings. Practical implications – this article describes the role of future entrepreneurs and can be applied in the identification of entrepreneurs’ skills and characteristics. Originality/Value – it is related to how to support entrepreneurs, taking into account the role of key actors, their teams, their local situation, and their intentions. Emotions were essential in the cases presented, and, even more, for the professionals that joined the initiatives

Mohammed Yahya is an entrepreneur engaged in the production and sale of essential oils. Getting his enterprise established was not easy. However, things improved when he started receiving support from Youth Participation and Employment (YPE) programme partner the Local Initiative and Development Forum (FIDEL). FIDEL was instrumental in facilitating business grants and business development support. With this more focused approach, Mohammed managed to register his business, participated in national fairs, and opened new market segments. He successfully graduated from the informal labour market to the self-employed category. The training he received from FIDEL helped him to increase the sale of his products. In the future, he hopes to explore the international market and reduce his imports of raw materials by growing ingredients locally.
