The relationship between world music traditions and modernist art music in the European tradition is often explored in composers’ musical fusions, but the motivations and aesthetics of such works often receive less notice than those grounded in post-modern (minimalist, popular music) approaches. In this essay the author asserts a particular relationship between rigorous modern composition technique and the highly rational patterning of Indonesian and Indian music, and follow this with analysis of Unstable Centre/Puser Belah (2003) a work composed for two simultaneous Balinese gamelan. The analysis demonstrates fusion at detailed levels of pattern and structure, but the article closes with a self-critical assessment of the venture.

The laser program developed at the Centre d'Etudes de Limeil-Valenton, Saint-Georges, France (CEL-V) is concentrated on a systematic investigation of indirect drive fusion; by comparison with direct drive, this process is expected to provide the required irradiation uniformity with relaxed constraints on laser beam quality. The main concerns are radiative transfer and preheat, hydrodynamic instabilities, and high-density X-ray driven implosions. Ablative implosion experiments have been conducted with the two beams at the Phebus facility (5 kJ, 1.3 ns, 0.35 μm). Symmetry was proved to be controlled by the casing structure, following scaling laws describing hohlraum physics. A compressed DT density ∼100 ρ0 (ρ0 liquid DT density) has been deduced from activation measurements. Different aspects of the soft X-ray transfer processes, and particularly of the ablation of a low-Z material, which drives the capsule implosion, are dealt with in detailed investigations. Reported here are results on X-ray reemission and penetration in several materials, and on induced hydrodynamics of accelerated foils. The laser energy required to reach fuel ignition conditions has been evaluated from numerical simulations as well as from analytical models, taking into account hohlraum physics, capsule implosion, hot spot formation, and burn propagation. Several crucial parameters have been drawn, the most important being the radiation temperature. A target gain in the order of 10 appears achievable with a 2-MJ laser.

A fusion protein was generated between the porcine α2A-adrenoceptor and a pertussis-toxin-insensitive (Cys351 → Gly) variant of the α subunit of Gi1α by direct in-frame fusion of the N-terminus of the G-protein to the C-terminus of the receptor. The fusion protein could be transiently expressed to high levels in COS-7 cells. Addition of the α2-adrenoceptor agonist 5-bromo-N-(4,5-dihydro-1H-imidazol-2-yl)-6-quinoxalinamine (UK14304) to membranes of pertussis-toxin-treated transfected cells resulted in a concentration-dependent stimulation of high-affinity GTPase activity. Vmax estimations for the GTPase activity demonstrated an induced catalytic-centre activity of 2.0±0.2 min-1 for Gi1α when the α2A-adrenoceptor was maximally stimulated by UK14304 with a Km for GTP of 0.37±0.07 μM. Co-expression of excess β1γ2 along with the α2A-adrenoceptor-Gi1α fusion protein resulted in greater maximal UK14304-induced stimulation of high-affinity GTPase activity (2.1±0.2-fold) without alteration in agonist EC50. These studies demonstrate the functionality of the fusion construct, its capacity to interact with βγ complex and its utility in measuring agonist regulation of the catalytic-centre activity of GTP by a receptor-associated G-protein.

AbstractIntroduction: Prostate carcinoma is the most frequent malign neoplasm among men with an ever-growing incidence rate. TMPRSS2-ERG fusion transcript leads to the androgen induction of ERG proto-oncogenes expression, representing a high presence of oncogenes alteration among prostate tumour cells.Aim: The aim of this research was to detect and evaluate theTMPRSS2-ERG fuse transcript in the tissues of patients with prostate cancer, and establish a base of material of these samples for further genetic examination.Materials and methods: The research was a prospective clinical study that involved and focused on random sampling of 101 patients (62 with prostate cancer-study group and 39 with benign changes in the prostate-control group). Real time PCR analysis for detection of the TMPRSS2-ERG fusion transcript in prostate tissue was performed and also data from the histopathology results of tissues were used, as well as data for the level of PSA (prostate-specific antigen) in blood. Results: TMPRSS2-ERG fusion transcript was detected in 20 out of 62 (32.2%) patients with prostate carcinoma and among no patients with benign changes whatsoever. There were no significant differences between patients with/without detected TMPRSS2-ERG fusion related to Gleason score. Among 50%, in the study group this score was greater than 7 per/for Median IQR=7 (6-8). Significant difference was recognized, related to the average value of PSA in favour of significantly higher value of PSA in the study group with prostate cancer, but there was also no significant difference between samples with prostate cancer who were with/without detected TMPRSS2-ERG fusion transcript related to PSA level.Discussion: The results from this research are in accordance with the values and results from analyses done in several research centres and oncological institutes. Conclusion: The positive findings in small scale studies encourage the implementation of larger scale studies that will be enriched with results of genetic transcript in blood and urine and will define the positive diagnostic meaning of the TMPRSS-ERG fusion transcript.

We present 20 patients, who had a four corner arthrodesis, from July 2006 to March 2008, using a dorsal circular plate, to treat scaphoid nonunion and scapholunate dissociation with advanced collapse (SNAC, SLAC). The surgical technique was a fusion restricted to the central area filled with one piece of cancellous bone graft taken from the excised scaphoid. Wrist motion, grip strength, and Disabilities of Arm Shoulder and Hand (DASH) score improved after surgery at a mean follow-up of 20.2 months. Fusion occurred in 19/20 patients. Two patients (10%) had persistent pain. The rest had a good clinical result. We found that four-corner fusion using a dorsal circular plate using the specific technical modifications was successful.

Atypical breakpoints and variant APL cases involving alternative chromosomal aberrations are seen in a small subset of acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) patients. Over 7 different partner genes for RARA have been described. Although rare, these variants prove to be a diagnostic challenge and require combination of advanced cytogenetic and molecular techniques for accurate characterization. Heterogeneity occurs not only at the molecular level but also at clinico-pathological level influencing treatment response and outcome. In this case series we describe the molecular heterogeneity of APL seen in a single tertiary referral centre with a focus on seven variant APL cases from a single tertiary cancer center in India over a period of two and a half years. We discuss five cases with PLZF-RARA fusion and two novel PML-RARA variants, including a Bcr3 variant involving fusion of PML exon4 and RARA exon3 with an additional 40 nucleotides originating from RARA intron2, another involving exon 6 of PML and exon 3 of RARA with addition of 126 nucleotides, which mapped to the central portion of RARA intron 2 To the best of our knowledge this is the first of kind case series from India

Study Design/Objective. A single-centre, prospective, non-comparative study of 25 patients to evaluate the performance and safety of the Memory Metal Minimal Access Cage (MAC) in Lumbar Interbody Fusion.Summary of Background Data. Interbody fusion cages in general are designed to withstand high axial loads and in the meantime to allow ingrowth of new bone for bony fusion. In many cages the contact area with the endplate is rather large leaving a relatively small contact area for the bone graft with the adjacent host bone. MAC is constructed from the memory metal Nitinol and builds on the concept of sufficient axial support in combination with a large contact area of the graft facilitating bony ingrowth and ease in minimal access implantation due to its high deformability.Methods. Twenty five subjects with a primary diagnosis of disabling back and radicular leg pain from a single level degenerative lumbar disc underwent an interbody fusion using MAC and pedicle screws. Clinical performance was evaluated prospectively over 2 years using the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), Short Form 36 questionnaire (SF-36) and pain visual analogue scale (VAS) scores. The interbody fusion status was assessed using conventional radiographs and CT scan. Safety of the device was studied by registration of intra- and post-operative adverse effects.Results. Clinical performance improved significantly (P<.0018), CT scan confirmed solid fusion in all 25 patients at two year follow-up. In two patients migration of the cage occurred, which was resolved uneventfully by placing a larger size at the subsequent revision.Conclusions. We conclude that the Memory Metal Minimal Access Cage (MAC) resulted in 100% solid fusions in 2 years and proved to be safe, although two patients required revision surgery in order to achieve solid fusion.

PurposeFluoroscopic systems in modern interventional suites have the ability to perform flat panel detector CT (FDCT) with navigational guidance. Fusion with MR allows navigational guidance towards FDCT occult targets. We aim to evaluate the accuracy of this system using single-pass needle placement in a deep brain stimulation (DBS) phantom.Materials and methodsMR was performed on a head phantom with DBS lead targets. The head phantom was placed into fixation and FDCT was performed. FDCT and MR datasets were automatically fused using the integrated guidance system (iGuide, Siemens). A DBS target was selected on the MR dataset. A 10 cm, 19 G needle was advanced by hand in a single pass using laser crosshair guidance. Radial error was visually assessed against measurement markers on the target and by a second FDCT. Ten needles were placed using CT-MR fusion and 10 needles were placed without MR fusion, with targeting based solely on FDCT and fusion steps repeated for every pass.ResultsMean radial error was 2.75±1.39 mm as defined by visual assessment to the centre of the DBS target and 2.80±1.43 mm as defined by FDCT to the centre of the selected target point. There were no statistically significant differences in error between MR fusion and non-MR guided series.ConclusionsSingle pass needle placement in a DBS phantom using FDCT guidance is associated with a radial error of approximately 2.5–3.0 mm at a depth of approximately 80 mm. This system could accurately target sub-centimetre intracranial lesions defined on MR.

BACKGROUND: Cervical herniation is commonly treated by anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) if conservative management has failed in relief of the patient's symptoms. Disc fusion is needed after ACDF as anterior longitudinal ligament will be absent after doing the operation, especially if multiple levels are needed. The occurrence of complications as cage subsidence and adjacent segment failure related to the length of follow up as they are increasing in percentage is directly proportional to the length of follow up. AIM: Analysis of the results for patients who underwent 3 levels of ACDF with cage fusion for short term and long term follow up in multiple centres as the visual analogue score for neck pain & brachialgia. METHODS: This retrospective cohort series of 68 patients selected out of 136 patients suffering from 3 levels of degenerative cervical disc disease who were unresponsive to adequate conservative therapy. All cases were treated at one of the neurosurgery departments of 3 different hospitals (Naser institute for research and treatment hospital, Haram hospital for research and treatment and Misr university for science and technology) by the same surgical team in the period from February 2012 to February 2017. RESULTS: We found in this study;68 patients fulfilling the inclusion criteria, of the 29 patients underwent 3 levels of ACDF starting from C3-4 (42.65%) and 39 patients who underwent 3 levels of ACDF starting from C4-5 (57.35%). Clinical assessment for VAS pain score for both neck pain and radiculopathy were done before the surgery and immediately post-operative and during each time follow up visit and we found statistically significant immediate postoperative improvement. (P ˂ 0.05) CONCLUSION: Stand-alone three levels of an anterior cervical discectomy with cage fusion technique improved the clinical outcomes on long term follow up.

SummaryThe capacity of sister blastomeres of mouse embryos for induced fusion changed during the 2-cell stage. It was at low level (24%) at the early 2-cell stage, increased and reached 98.5% at the middle 2-cell stage and fell sharply to 31% at the late 2-cell stage. At the time corresponding to the G2/Mphase of the cell cycle the blastomeres fused in only 8% of cases. Vital staining of 2-cell embryos by rhodamine 123 showed that the mitochondria were dispersed throughout the cytoplasm with a ringlike (around the nucleus) or spot-like (over the metaphase plate) concentration in the centre of each blastomere. At the periphery of blastomeres the mitochondrial content was low. The behaviour of the mitochondria reflected the subsequent events of structural and functional integration of the sister blastomeres under induced fusion: a discernible boundary between partners during 30 min after electrofusion or 1 h after fusion with polyethylene glycol; movement of the two ‘rings’ to the centre of the blastomere fusion products (BFP) to form one large bright ‘spot’ over the common metaphase plate; mitochondria outlining the shape of the spindle and connection between sister blastomeres until completion of the first mitosis of BFP The data obtained suggest that fusion of the blastomeres does not lead to extensive changes in the hybrid cytoplasm and integration of nuclear material is taking place only at metaphase stage Cytogenetic examination of BFP at the 2-cell stage confirmed reconstruction of the tetraploid embryos and found that sister blastomeres of such embryos could asynchronously enter the next cleavage division similarly to normal diploid 2-cell embryos.

✓ Bone grafts are usually an integral part of cervical spine fixation following spinal trauma. Unfortunately, many currently used bone graft donor sites (including the rib, iliac crest, and fibula) cause unacceptable patient morbidity, especially postoperative pain. A readily available source of autologous bone graft for posterior cervical fusion is the occipital bone. This membranous bone offers the advantage of strength and less bone resorption. It has been used at the Sunnybrook Health Science Centre for 4 years as a standard source of bone graft with no morbidity and excellent results for fusion.

Small-scale spatial variability in NO2 concentrations is analysed with the help of pollution maps. Maps of NO2 estimated by the Airviro dispersion model and land use regression (LUR) model are fused with measured NO2 concentrations from low-cost sensors (LCS), reference sensors and diffusion tubes. In this study, geostatistical universal kriging was employed for fusing (integrating) model estimations with measured NO2 concentrations. The results showed that the data fusion approach was capable of estimating realistic NO2 concentration maps that inherited spatial patterns of the pollutant from the model estimations and adjusted the modelled values using the measured concentrations. Maps produced by the fusion of NO2-LCS with NO2-LUR produced better results, with r-value 0.96 and RMSE 9.09. Data fusion adds value to both measured and estimated concentrations: the measured data are improved by predicting spatiotemporal gaps, whereas the modelled data are improved by constraining them with observed data. Hotspots of NO2 were shown in the city centre, eastern parts of the city towards the motorway (M1) and on some major roads. Air quality standards were exceeded at several locations in Sheffield, where annual mean NO2 levels were higher than 40 µg/m3. Road traffic was considered to be the dominant emission source of NO2 in Sheffield.

Purpose: To evaluate multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging/transrectal ultrasound (mpMRI/TRUS) fusion targeted biopsy (TB) of the prostate for prostate cancer (PCa) diagnosis. Patients and Methods: From April 2013 to January 2014, 53 men were included in this prospective single-centre study. The degree of PCa suspicion from mpMRI findings was classified according to the PI-RADS scoring system. Of these, 50 patients underwent both an mpMRI/TRUS fusion TB and a 10-core systematic biopsy (SB) of the prostate and were eligible for analysis. Results: 225 targeted and 500 systematic cores were included in this study. PCa was histologically confirmed in 52.0% of patients (26/50), whereas TB revealed PCa in 46.0% (23/50) and SB in 36.0% (18/50). TB identified PCa in 16.0% of all patients (8/50) that were missed by SB. All told, the targeted core was 2.8 times more likely to be PCa-positive than the systematic core (29.3 vs. 10.4%). Conclusions: mpMRI/TRUS fusion TB of the prostate is safe, practicable and may improve PCa diagnosis using fewer biopsy cores compared to SB.

The main challenge for a cognitive radio is to detect the existence of primary users reliably in order to minimise the interference to licensed communications. Hence, spectrum sensing is a most important requirement of a cognitive radio. However, due to the channel uncertainties, local observations are not reliable and collaboration among users is required. Selection of fusion rule at a common receiver has a direct impact on the overall spectrum sensing performance. In this paper, optimisation of collaborative spectrum sensing in terms of optimum decision fusion is studied for hard and soft decision combining. It is concluded that for optimum fusion, the fusion centre must incorporate signal-to-noise ratio values of cognitive users and the channel conditions. A genetic algorithm-based weighted optimisation strategy is presented for the case of soft decision combining. Numerical results show that the proposed optimised collaborative spectrum sensing schemes give better spectrum sensing performance.

Background: Lane detection is a difficult issue because of different lane circumstances. It plays an important part in advanced driver assistance systems, which give information about the centre of a host vehicle such as lane structure and lane position. Lane departure warning (LDW) is used to warn the driver about an unplanned lane exit from the original lane. The objective of this study was to develop a data-fusion LDW framework to improve the rate of detection of lane departure during daylight and at night. Methods: Vision-based LDW is a comprehensive framework based on vision-based lane detection with additional lateral offset ratio computations based on the detected X12 and X22 coordinates. The computed lateral offset ratio is used to detect lane departure based on predefined LDW identification criteria for vision-based LDW. Data fusion-based LDW was developed using a multi-input-single-output fuzzy logic controller. Data fusion involved lateral offset ratio and yaw acceleration response from the vision-based LDW and model-based vehicle dynamics frameworks. Real-life datasets were generated for simulation under the MATLAB Simulink platform. Results: Experimental results showed that fusion-based LDW achieved an average lane departure detection rate of 99.96% and 98.95% with false positive rates (FPR) of 0.04% and 1.05% using road footage clips #5–#27 in daytime and night-time, respectively. The average FPR using data fusion-based LDW reduced by 18.83% and 15.22% compared to vision-based LDW in daytime and night-time, respectively. Conclusions: The data fusion-based LDW is a novel way of reducing false lane departure detection by fusing two types of modalities to determine the correct lane departure information. The limitation is the constant warning threshold value used in the current implementation of LDW in the vision-based LDW framework. An adaptive mechanism of warning threshold taking various road structures into account could be developed to improve lane departure detection.

Cytokinesis separates the forming daughter cells. Higher plants have lost the ability to constrict the plasma membrane (PM) in the division plane. Instead, trans-Golgi network (TGN)-derived membrane vesicles are targeted to the centre of the division plane and generate, by homotypic fusion, the partitioning membrane named cell plate (CP). The CP expands in a centrifugal fashion until its margin fuses with the PM at the cortical division site. Mutant screens in Arabidopsis have identified a cytokinesis-specific syntaxin named KNOLLE and an interacting Sec1/Munc18 (SM) protein named KEULE both of which are required for vesicle fusion during cytokinesis. KNOLLE is only made during M-phase, targeted to the division plane and degraded in the vacuole at the end of cytokinesis. Here we address mechanisms of KNOLLE trafficking and interaction of KNOLLE with different soluble N-ethylmaleimide-sensitive factor (NSF) attachment protein (SNAP) receptor (SNARE) partners and with SM-protein KEULE, ensuring membrane fusion in cytokinesis.

Background: The purpose of this study is to compare 1-year postoperative clinical outcomes between posterior instrumented fusion with (P/TLIF) and without (PLF) interbody fusion in patients with isthmic spondylolisthesis. Methods: This is a multi-centre retrospective study using the Canadian Spine Outcomes and Research Network. Adult patients who received surgical management for isthmic spondylolisthesis were included in this study. The primary outcome was change in Oswestry Disability Index at 1-year. Secondary outcomes were change in EQ-5D, SF-12 PCS, back pain, leg pain, estimated blood loss, length of surgery, length of stay, rate of transfusions and adverse events. Descriptive statistics, Student t-test, Chi-Squared test, and stepwise multivariable regression were used for analysis. Results: A total of 300 patients (252 P/TLIF, 48 PLF) were included in this study. The mean age was 50 years. The P/TLIF group had poorer baseline leg pain scores (t=2.02, p=0.01). There were no significant differences in primary and secondary outcomes between the two groups. Addition of interbody fusion was not a significant variable in the stepwise multivariable regression analysis. Conclusions: There were no significant differences in clinical outcomes at 1 year. Addition of interbody fusion was not associated with higher complication rates or length of stay.

A high concentration of deuterium atoms was implanted into palladium and indium targets by means of a 60 keV, 100 μA [Formula: see text] beam. The motivation was to simulate the Utah electrolysis experiment in a nonequilibrium situation not involving heavy water as the intermediate material. The assumption was that the formation of a high concentration of deuterium nuclei in the surface region of the target material was a prerequisite for the demonstration of the so-called "cold fusion" effect. In experiments performed at the Accelerator Centre of the University of Manitoba, significant neutron production was observed for palladium and indium targets into which an excess of 1019 deuterons were implanted. Despite some initial surprise at the flux of neutrons generated at such low energies, the numbers observed seem consistent with known fusion cross sections and warm fusion calculations.

An elderly woman with a complex medical history presented with a left forearm mass that slowly developed for several months. The excisional biopsy of this skin mass was remarkable for involvement by a follicle centre cell derived lymphoma with a nodular and diffuse pattern associated with a subset of scattered Hodgkin and Reed-Sternberg like cells. Fluorescence in situ hybridization studies did not detect the presence of IgH-bcl2 fusion transcript, and molecular studies were negative for immunoglobulin heavy chain gene rearrangements and EBV DNA sequences. Hodgkin and Reed-Sternberg like cells are rarely reported in FLs, and the association with primary cutaneous follicle centre lymphoma is extremely rarely seen. To our knowledge, our case is the second case of primary cutaneous follicle centre lymphoma with Hodgkin and Reed-Sternberg like cells.

This paper was proposed a new algorithm for Facial Expression Recognition (FER) which was based on fusion of gabor texture features and Centre Binary Pattern (CBP). Firstly, gabor texture feature were extracted from every expression image. Five scales and eight orientations of gabor wavelet filters were used to extract gabor texture features. Then the CBP features were extracted from gabor feature images and adaboost algorithm was used to select final features from CBP feature images. Finally, we obtain expression recognition results on the final expression features by Sparse Representation-based Classification (SRC) method. The experiment results on Japanese Female Facial Expression (JAFFE) database demonstrated that the new algorithm had a much higher recognition rate than the traditional algorithms.

Three evolutionarily conserved proteins known as SNAREs (soluble N-ethylmaleimide-sensitive fusion protein attachment protein receptors) mediate exocytosis from single cell eukaryotes to neurons. Among neuronal SNAREs, syntaxin and SNAP-25 (synaptosome-associated protein of 25 kDa) reside on the plasma membrane, whereas synaptobrevin resides on synaptic vesicles prior to fusion. The SNARE motifs of the three proteins form a helical bundle which probably drives membrane fusion. Since studies in vivo suggested an importance for multiple SNARE complexes in the fusion process, and models appeared in the literature with large numbers of SNARE bundles executing the fusion process, we analysed the quaternary structure of the full-length native SNARE complexes in detail. By employing a preparative immunoaffinity procedure we isolated all of the SNARE complexes from brain, and have shown by size-exclusion chromatography and negative stain electron microscopy that they exist as approx. 30 nm particles containing, most frequently, 3 or 4 bundles emanating from their centre. Using highly purified, individual, full-length SNAREs we demonstrated that the oligomerization of SNAREs into star-shaped particles with 3 to 4 bundles is an intrinsic property of these proteins and is not dependent on other proteins, as previously hypothesized. The average number of the SNARE bundles in the isolated fusion particles corresponds well with the co-operativity observed in calcium-triggered neuronal exocytosis.
