Hydrogen bonds are arguably the most important non-covalent interactions in chemistry and biology, and their strength and directionality have been elegantly exploited in the rational design of complex structures. We recently noted that the variable responses of cyclic π-systems upon H-bond formation reciprocally lead to modulations of the H-bonds’ strengths, a phenomenon that we dubbed (anti)aromaticity-modulated hydrogen bonding (AMHB) [J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2016, 138, 3427–3432]. Species that switch from aromatic to antiaromatic or vice versa upon changing π-electron counts should be oppositely stabilized by the AMHB effects, so their redox potentials should be significantly “tuned” by H-bond formation. Herein, using quantum chemical simulations, we explore the effects of these H-bond induced π-electron polarizations on the redox potentials of (anti)aromatic heterocycles. The systems chosen for this study have embedded amide groups and amidine moieties capable of forming two-point H-bonds in their cyclic π-systems. Thus, as the 4-electron and 6-electron π-systems in redox-capable monocycles (e.g., quinones) can be differentially stabilized, their redox potentials can be modulated by H-bond formation by as much as 6 kcal/mol (258 mV for one electron transfer). In fused rings, the connectivity patterns are as important as the π-electron counts. Extending these ideas to flavin, a biologically relevant case, we find that H-bonding patterns like those found in its crystals can vary its redox potential by up to 1.3 kcal/mol.

Apart from hydrogen-bonding interactions, the bile acid receptors exhibit significant aromatic π-stacking interactions with the aromatic fused ring of the flavin derivative. These studies provide rationalisation for the differences in binding behaviour of bile acid receptors having differing aromatic arm lengths towards a flavin analogue.

The flavin-containing monooxygenase from Methylophaga sp. strain SK1 (mFMO) is a valuable biocatalyst for the preparation of optically active sulfoxides, among other valuable compounds. In this study, we explored to benefits of using Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents (NADESs) when doing oxidation with this biocatalyst, fused to phosphite dehydrogenase for cofactor regeneration (PTDH-mFMO). It was found that optically active sulfoxides could be obtained with slightly higher conversions in 10% v/v NADES when working at substrate concentrations of 50–200 mM, whereas there was no loss in the enantioselectivity. With these results, it is demonstrated for the first time that flavin-containing monooxygenases can be employed as biocatalysts in presence of NADESs.

ABSTRACT A degenerate set of PCR primers were used to clone a gene encoding a cytochrome P450 (the P450RhF gene) from Rhodococcus sp. strain NCIMB 9784 which is of unique primary structural organization. Surprisingly, analysis of the translation product revealed that the P450 is fused to a reductase domain at the C terminus which displays sequence conservation for dioxygenase reductase proteins. The reductase partner comprises flavin mononucleotide- and NADH-binding motifs and a [2Fe2S] ferredoxin-like center. The gene was engineered for heterologous expression in Escherichia coli, and conditions were found in which the enzyme was produced in a soluble form. A recombinant strain of E. coli was able to mediate the O dealkylation of 7-ethoxycoumarin in good yield, despite the absence of any recombinant redox proteins. This unprecedented finding leads us to propose that P450RhF represents the first example of a new class of cytochromes P450 in which the reducing equivalents are supplied by a novel reductase in a fused arrangement.

Abstract OBJECTIVES Our goal was to assess the aortic leaflet free margin length (FML) and geometric height (gH) in a normal aortic valve (AV), aorta dilatation and aortic leaflet prolapse. METHODS We measured the FML and gH intraoperatively in 132 patients operated on for aortic insufficiency, aortic dilatation, endocarditis or fibroelastoma. Patients were divided into 3 groups: normal tricuspid AV (group 1, n = 12), aortic dilatation (group 2, tricuspid = 43, bicuspid = 18) and leaflet prolapse (group 3, tricuspid = 32, bicuspid = 27). The FML and gH were compared between the groups and between the leaflets within each group. RESULTS In a normal tricuspid AV, the mean FML and gH were 34.7 ± 3.1 mm and 18.8 ± 1.7 mm, respectively. In group 2 tricuspid, the FML and gH were greater than those in group 1 (FML 43.7 ± 4.4, P < 0.001; gH 21.2 ± 1.8, P = 0.003). In group 3, tricuspid, the FML of the prolapsing leaflet was greater than the FML of the non-prolapsing leaflet (48.3 ± 5.4 vs 42.2 ± 3.6; P < 0.001). In group 2, bicuspid, FML of both leaflets were similar in group 2, but augmented on the fused leaflet compared to the non-fused leaflet in group 3 (fused 55.4 ± 6.3; non-fused 46.2 ± 6.2; P < 0.001). In groups 2 and 3 bicuspid, the gH of the non-fused leaflet was systematically greater than the fused leaflet (group 2 non-fused 24.6 ± 2.5 vs fused 20.4 ± 2.1; P < 0.001) CONCLUSIONS In aortic dilatation and leaflet prolapse, FML and, to a lesser extent, gH increased significantly compared to those of normal AV function. FML and gH dimensions also depended on the valve configuration (tricuspid/bicuspid). These data provide new insight into the pathomorphology of AV disease and will serve to further develop new methods of AV repair based on intraoperative measurements of the FML.

An AM1-type semiempirical molecular orbital treatment has been performed on certain [22]-type cyclophane-fused tetraazaporphyrins. It has been found that within the isomeric set of structures the most and the least endothermic porphyrins are the ones having non-Hamiltonian and Hamiltonian cyclophane moieties respectively. On the other hand, the lowest HOMO and LUMO and the highest HOMO energies are possessed by the structures bearing Hamiltonian and non-Hamiltonian cyclophane moieties respectively, whereas the highest LUMO energy belongs to a Hamiltonian cyclophane-fused system within the same type of isomeric structures.

Recurrent or persistent low back pain (LBP) after lumbar fusion can be related to many factors. We reviewed the provocation lumbar diskogram (PLD) features and redo-fusion outcome in our patients evaluated for recurrent/persistent LBP after technically successful fusion. LD was performed in 27 patients with recurrent/persistent LBP after prior successful lumbar surgical fusion (31 fused levels: single-level fusion-23; two-level fusion-4). PLD response and imaging characteristics at fused and non-fused levels were assessed including: intra-diskal lidocaine response, diskogram-image/post-diskogram CT appearance, presence/absence of diskographic contrast leakage, and evidence of fusion integrity or hardware failure. Outcomes in patients having redo-fusion were assessed. Concordant pain was encountered at 15 out of 23 (65%) single-level fusions, non-concordant pain in one fusion with non-painful response in seven. Adjacent-level concordant pain was identified in seven out of 23 (30%) patients (three of 15 with painful fused levels; four of seven with non-painful fusions). In two-level fusions, concordant pain was encountered at one fused level in each patient. In painful fused levels, leaking and contained disks were encountered with partial or complete pain elimination after intra-diskal lidocaine injection. In anterior fusions, space or contrast surrounding the cage was noted at five of 11 levels. Pseudoarthrosis was noted only with trans-sacral screw fusions. Redo-fusion in 13 patients resulted in significant improvement in nine and moderate improvement in one. Patients with recurrent/persistent LBP after technically successful fusion may have a diskogenic pain source at the surgically fused or adjacent level confirmed by lidocaine-assisted PLD.

The damage repair of fused silica based on the CO2 laser repair technique has been successfully applied in high-power laser systems in the controllable nuclear fusion field. However, this kind of repairing technique mainly focuses on large-scale laser damage with sizes larger than 200 μm, but ignores the influence of cluster small-scale damage with sizes smaller than 50 μm. In order to inhibit the growth of small-scale damage and further improve the effect of fused silica damage repair, this paper carried out a study on the repair of fused silica damage using the magnetorheological (MR) removing method. The feasibility of fused silica damage repairing was verified, and the evolution law of the number, morphology, and the surface roughness of small-scale damage were all analyzed. The results showed that the MR removing method was non-destructive compared to traditional repairing technologies. It not only effectively improved the whole damage repairing rate to more than 90%, but it also restored the optical properties and surface roughness of the damaged components in the repairing process. Based on the study of the MR removing repair law, a combined repairing process of 4 μm MR removal and 700 nm computer controlled optical surfacing (CCOS) removal is proposed. A typical fused silica element was experimentally repaired to verify the process parameters. The repairing rate of small-scale damage was up to 90.4%, and the surface roughness was restored to the level before repairing. The experimental results validate the effectiveness and feasibility of the combined repairing process. This work provides an effective method for the small-scale damage repairing of fused silica components.

Fused-taper fiber coupler is usually fabricated by using a microburner. The coupler’s excess loss and performance repeatability are unstable. To simulate the fabrication process and to find solution to the performance questions, A viscoelastic rheological model of fused biconical taper process is presented by using generalized Maxwell model to simulate the viscoelastic characteristic of fused fiberglass, and the rheological numerical analysis under the non-isothermal condition is carried out with ANSYS software. The effect of technical parameters such as drawing speed and fused temperature on the fabrication process is studied. Drawing speed is in direct proportion to the maximum stress, and fused temperature affect extremely the fabrication process. The fluctuation of fused temperature by 5 can lead to the change of maximum stress by 30%. It is found by experiments that the flame temperature fluctuates in the range of 5-30, while the drawing speed is rather stable. It can be reached a conclusion that it is the fluctuation of fused temperature that induces the poor performance repeatability and unstable excess loss.

Image processing technology requires moreover the full image or the part of image which is to be processed from the user’s point of view like the radius of object etc. The main purpose of fusion is to diminish dissimilar error between the fused image and the input images. With respect to the medical diagnosis, the edges and outlines of the concerned objects is more important than extra information. So preserving the edge features of the image is worth for investigating the image fusion. The image with higher contrast contains more edge-like features. Here we propose a new medical image fusion scheme namely Local Energy Match NSCT based on discrete contourlet transformation, which is constructive to give the details of curve edges. It is used to progress the edge information of fused image by dropping the distortion. This transformation lead to crumbling of multimodal image addicted to finer and coarser details and finest details will be decayed into unusual resolution in dissimilar orientation. The input multimodal images namely CT and MRI images are first transformed by Non Sub sampled Contourlet Transformation (NSCT) which decomposes the image into low frequency and high frequency elements. In our system, the Low frequency coefficient of the image is fused by image averaging and Gabor filter bank algorithm. The processed High frequency coefficients of the image are fused by image averaging and gradient based fusion algorithm. Then the fused image is obtained by inverse NSCT with local energy match based coefficients. To evaluate the image fusion accuracy, Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR), Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) and Correlation Coefficient parameters are used in this work .

Abstract We examined the influence of identity fusion and status of evaluator on willingness to fight for one’s group after group-descriptive or not group-descriptive feedback. The valence of evaluative information was varied as well: feedback either support negative group-stereotype (negative but descriptive condition) or contradict negative group-stereotype (positive but not descriptive condition). In two studies (N=208 & N=119) we partially replicated previous findings on self-verification. Individuals fused with one’s group were more prone than non fused to fight for group members after receiving, challenging, not group-describing feedback, but only when evaluator’s status was high. When the evaluator’ status was low, fused participants (vs. non fused) engaged in self-enhancement strategies: that is they endorse radical behavior after negative, even if group-describing, feedback. We discuss the importance of identity fusion and evaluator’s status for determining when self-enhancement and self-verification will and will not be evoke.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the long-term effectiveness of wrist fusion on the relief of pain and also the functional capacities of the upper limbs in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Eighteen patients were assessed at a mean of 7 years after wrist arthrodesis and a mean of 17 years after the onset of RA. Radiological measurements, pain assessment and impairment rating of the upper limbs were made of the fused and non-fused sides. The average position of arthrodesis was 8° of extension and 9° of ulnar deviation. All patients were pleased with the procedure and had satisfactory pain relief. Impairment ratings did not detect any significant difference in the sensory and motor function of the hand when the fused and non-fused groups were compared. We conclude that in patients with rheumatoid arthritis, wrist arthrodesis is a reliable procedure that provides predictable pain relief and a high degree of satisfaction without additional functional loss in the upper limb.

The selectivity and molecular mechanism of the intramolecular [3+2] cycloaddition (IMDC) reaction of nitrone-alkene generated from m-allyloxybenzaldehyde has been studied computationally using B3LYP/6-31G(d) theoretical method. The energy profiles indicate that this IMDC reaction favours kinetically the formation of the fused-endo, as observed experimentally. The solvent has no influence on the mechanism and selectivity, but it increases slightly the activation energy and decreases the exothermic character of this IMDC reaction. The analysis through electron localisation function (ELF) of the favourable fused-endo pathway shows that the formation of the C–O and C–C new bonds occurred via a non-concerted synchronous one-step mechanism. The analysis of noncovalent interaction using Non-covalent interaction (NCI) and QTAIM analyses of the structure of the fused-endo transition state indicates that the hydrogen-bond formed at this approach is the origin for the favouring of the fused-endo pathway.

Medical image fusion plays an important role in detection and treatment of disease. Although numerous medical image fusion methods have been proposed, most of them decrease the contrast and lose the image information. In this paper, a novel MRI and CT image fusion method is proposed combining rolling guidance filter, structure tensor, and nonsubsampled shearlet transform (NSST). First, the rolling guidance filter and the sum-modified laplacian (SML) operator are introduced in the algorithm to construct the weight maps in non-linear domain, then the fused gradient is firstly obtained by a new weighted structure tensor fusion method, and the fused image is firstly acquired in NSST domain, finally, a new energy functional is defined to constrain the gradient and pixel information of the final fused image close to the pre-fused gradient and the pre-fused image, experimental results show that the proposed method can retain the edge information of source images effectively and preserve the reduction of contrast.

The consistence of performance such as excess loss, coupling ratio and drawing length of fused fiber couplers is poor, even if they are fabricated at the same technical parameters; And the fused temperature provided by gas fluctuates by 5-30°C, while the drawing speed is rather stable. To find out the reason of poor performance consistence, the rheological numerical analysis is carried out under the non-isothermal condition. The effect of technology parameters such as drawing speed and fused temperature on the fabrication process is studied. A conclusion can be reached that it is the fluctuation of fused temperature that induces poor consistence. An electrical resistance microheater is designed and fabricated, and its fluctuation of temperature is by 1.5°C. The performance consistence of fibre coupler is improved greatly with the novel heater.
