Abstract Furniture manufacturers in the United States are major users of a variety of wood products. In the last two decades, traditional wood products, such as hardwood lumber, veneer, and plywood have been, in part, replaced by composite panel products, such as particleboard, hardboard, and medium-density fiberboard. This paper examines the uses of traditional and composite wood products by the wood household, upholstered household, and commercial furniture industries in descriptive and numerical terms. The analysis indicates that the substitution of composite products for traditional hardwood products has subsided in recent years in the household wood furniture industry but has continued in the commercial furniture industry. Strong growth in softwood lumber use has occurred in the household wood industry and the household upholstered furniture industry but not in the commercial furniture industry. Although hardwood lumber has been displaced by softwood-based composite panel products, greater relative decreases have occurred in hardwood veneer and veneer core plywood use because of composite panel substitution. Most recent market activities, however, indicate increased use of hardwood lumber in furniture production in the 1980s. South. J. Appl. For. 12(2):102-107.

Accurate cost estimation at the early stage of a construction project is a key factor in the success of most projects. Many difficulties arise when estimating the cost during the early design stage in customized furniture manufacturing. It is important to estimate the product cost in the earlier manufacturing phase. The cost estimation is related to the prediction of the cost, which commonly includes calculation of the materials, labor, sales, overhead, and other costs. Historical data of the previously manufactured products can be used in the cost estimation process of the new products. In this paper, we propose an early cost estimation approach, which is based on machine learning techniques. The experimental investigation based on the real customized furniture manufacturing data is performed, results are presented, and insights are given.

Wood furniture is often composed of simple parts that may be modeled as beams or plates. These particularities allow using simplified approaches that reduces the number of degrees of freedom (dof for short) in a finite element simulation of the furniture's behavior. Generally, connections are not taken into account in such simulations but these connections are critical in the failure process of the furniture and it worth studying it precisely. Using a multi-scale approach, this paper introduces a numerical procedure to identify the connection contribution in the furniture's stiffness. Comparing 3D finite element calculations with a Timoshenko's beam calculation on a corner of two wooden parts, we identify the specific behavior of the connection elements (pins, nut, screw… and local 3D effects) to introduce it as a punctual 0D element in the beam code. Two validations of the approach are presented here: (i) a numerical validation by comparing the result of the beam code with a complete 3D finite element simulation on a representative plane structure of wooden furniture; (ii) an experimental validation by managing a global bending test and measuring the displacement field using digital image correlation (DIC for short).

The integration of devices that support manufacturing activities and the interaction of workers with these devices in production plants, leads to potential benefits in the industrial environment. Problems, bottlenecks and improvement opportunities throughout production times need to be detected, analyzed and prioritized in order to select the most suitable solutions and address them properly. The integration of particular devices supports the manufacturing process and prevents the need for contingency planning; it also increases the quality of the produced goods, which leads to higher customer confidence and satisfaction. The scope of this article focuses on the development and experimentation of a vision system for the recognition of product components in order to support the classification of such items by the users working in a particular area of the production line. Even if the proposed solution presents a low level of human interaction and innovation, the objective of this paper is to demonstrate how the proposed classification system brings valuable benefits to the overall manufacturing process in a traditional furniture environment, with the inherent advantage that workers can perform this task in a more guided and riskless manner. The Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) approach was adopted to measure the benefits of the solution, which are described in article.

Abstract The online-to-offline (O2O) business mode, designed to attract online shoppers to participate in in-person retail consumption, is rapidly emerging in popularity in China, and having a significant impact on traditional manufacturing. Taking the wooden furniture industry as a case study, this research surveyed consumers' attitudes toward using the O2O mode for wooden furniture shopping. Respondents were asked to rate their online and in-store experiences and attitudes about wooden furniture shopping via the O2O mode. On the basis of data processing of questionnaires, this study established hypotheses and conducted hypothesis testing by one-way analysis of variance and regression analysis. Results of this research indicated that Chinese consumers' attitudes about using the O2O mode for wooden furniture shopping were significantly affected by the region/city tiers in which the respondents resided. Consumers' attitudes in all regions were affected by subjective perceptions, the reputation and security of the Internet platform, and the quality of enterprise services. Specifically, those who live in tier 1 cities (most economically developed cities, e.g., Beijing, Tianjin) are more concerned about their shopping environment, whereas those who live in tier 3 cities (less economically developed cities) are more concerned about the Internet platform's service and promotions. Tier 2 cities (large cities that may be provincial capitals) are more concerned about convenience of online shopping and environment of the offline store. The results of this study could help enable business managers to develop appropriate marketing strategies for O2O wooden furniture shopping and provide reference for the transformation of business mode of wooden furniture manufacturing enterprises.
