Asmore and more companies have paid attention to implement lean thinking in theirmanufacturing process, the value stream mapping played an important role for manycompanies to make a transition from their traditional production systems to lean systems.The content and resources of this master thesis come from an American furniturecompany named KAMA which mainly produces office furniture with different components.Although there are various types of products, the authors merely focus on the officechair products. This research is an attempt to understand and analyze the problemsin the production flow on the example of KAMA’s office chair products that includesPH product family as the target research part.Purpose: The purpose of this research study is to investigate, analyze and find out solutionsfor waste-related problems in the office chair manufacturing flow of KAMA.Method: A single case study will be applied in this study paper. Data should be collectedfrom telephone interviews with company’s managements, the studying ofKAMA’s internal documentation and the secondary data from lean project report collectedby Consultant EIMI. In order to improve the production process, the valuestream mapping method will be applied to build the current value state map of CompanyKAMA and identify the potential wastes during the manufacturing process, andthen analyze and give the solutions for future improvement. Additional, other methodsincluding the order penetration point analysis, make-to-stock theory, and the CONWIPanalysis have been subsequently applied in designing a draft of the future state map.Conclusion: From the constructed current value stream mapping of KAMA officechair manufacturing process, it can be found that the most essential wastes are overproduction,waiting, unnecessary inventory and unnecessary movement. In addition, theimproper workstation arrangement and unnecessary waiting time have been identified asthe critical wasting reasons. Thus, any solutions to reduce or eliminate the identifiedwastes have been considered and would be given in the future state. In order to improvethe efficiency and reduce the unnecessary movements, adopting the appropriate cellularlayout in the mechanical workshop is quite beneficial. The mentioned methods to reducewastes have been summarized in the draft of the future state map of the company.The main benefits of the proposed future state value stream mapping are faster and accurateorder fulfillment process, reduction of unnecessary movements in workshop, lowinventory, high productivity and reduced costs in the flow of KAMA’s manufacturingprocess.

Differentierad undervisning och personlig inlärning är inte effektiv i traditionella läromiljöer och bör vara i fokus för att skapa framtidens klassrum (Kariippanon, 2017). Detta examensarbete tar upp hur inredning för inlärningsmiljöer kan förbättras och utformas genom en deltagande designprocess med Katedralskolan i Växjö med hjälp av återvunna material och additiv tillverkningsteknik. Arbetet har också undersökt möjligheterna att involvera intressenter för att skapa nytt lärande genom tillämpning av additiv tillverkning inom inredning och möbeldesign. Tillsammans med Katedralskolan och Sculptur har detta projekt undersökt ett koncept för skolor att ha integrerad utbildning i möbler genom semiotik och pedagogisk design som kommer att bidra till elevernas lärande samt utforska storskalig additiv tillverkning. Målet är att utforma en samling möbelkoncept som informerar och kommunicerar på utbildningsnivå och hur en cirkulär tillverkningsteknik är möjlig genom 3D-printnig med hjälp av kommuniationsdesign och semiotik. Målet är också att förstå Sculpturs produktutvecklings- och tillverkningsprocess genom storskalig additiv tillverkning. Projektets Mission statement var följande: Utveckla ett möbelkoncept baserat på en förståelse av behoven hos användargruppen i en samdesignprocess som ett fall för att studera storskalig additiv tillverkning tillsammans med de givna förutsättningarna från Sculptur. Examensarbetet har följt en iterativ designprocess som kallas design thinking process (The Interaction Design Foundation, 2021) tillsammans med en co-designprocess (Sanders, 2018). Design thinking är en designmetodik som ger en lösningsbaserad metod för att lösa problem. De fem faserna i design thinking är följande: Empathise, Define, Ideate, Prototype, Test. Genom studier, undersökningar och observationer skapades en lista över intressenters behov och användes när idéer utvecklades genom workshops, skisser och prototyper. Idéerna utvecklades sedan till koncept som sedan testades genom både mindre 3D-utskrift och storskalig additiv tillverkning. Koncepten utvärderades också av intressenter samt genom en konceptviktningsmatris (Wikberg N., et.al., 2015). Resultatet av detta examensarbete är sammanfattningen av möbelkonceptet samt studien av storskalig additiv tillverkning som industridesigner. Möbelkonceptet ”Unfold lounge chair” bygger på intressenternas behov samt tillverkningsrestriktioner. Det är också ett försök att använda teori för att skapa nästa generation av pedagogiska möbler med hållbara och cirkulära tillverkningstekniker. Genom design thinking skapades resultatet med ett mänskligt centrerat tillvägagångssätt för att integrera människors behov, teknikens möjligheter och kraven för produktens framgång (IDEO, n.d.).

och produktionskonceptet TPM. Huvudobjektet för studierna var en maskinlinje för sågning, kantlistning, fräsning
och borrning av planmöbeldetaljer (Homag VI). En nulägesanalys genomfördes för att kartlägga stopporsaker
och OEE-talet (35,9 %). Inom samtliga klasser av stopptider är det framförallt kortvariga avbrott (81 %), vilket
tyder på kroniska fel i linjen. Tillsammans med maskinlinjens personal genomfördes en störningsanalys
(Ishikawadiagram). Nulägesanalys och störningsanalys visar på en förbättringspotential av 33 % för ökad
tillgänglighet. Vidare genomfördes en SMED-analys där själva analysarbetet genomfördes tillsammans med
personalen av maskinlinjen. Vid en närmare analys kunde det föreslås en klassificering av IED respektive OED
samt förenklingar som innebär en minskning av tidsåtgången med 55 min. och 43 sek för omställningen. Utöver
detta studerades bland annat verktyg som Lean-uppstart och kommunikation, operatörsunderhåll, 5S och
ständiga förbättringar. Det genomfördes en effektivitetsanalys av förbättringsgruppenverksamheten. Vid den
sistnämnda analysen konstaterades motivationsproblem hos personalen, som har sin huvudförklaring i ett
saknande av en organisatorisk plan och en planering för införandet av nya produktionsformer. Uppsatsen
rymmer en utförlig sammanfattning på svenska, engelska och tyska.
The master thesis has been realized in direct contact with the host company Spaljisten AB, Åseda Sweden and
is dealing with the production philosophy Lean production and the production concept TPM. Main object for the
studies was a machine line for processing of furniture details (Homag VI). An actual condition analysis has been
done to determinate stop reasons and the OEE (35.9 %). In all classes of stop reasons occur mainly short stops
(81 %) those indicate chronic problems in the line. Together with the employees of the line Homag VI was a fault
analysis done (Ishikawa diagram). Actual condition analysis and fault analysis can generate a potential of
improvement of 33 % for increased availability. Furthermore was a SMED analysis done where the main work of
analyzing was done together with the employees of the line. By a deeper analysis a classification of IED and
OED respectively could be done including even simplifications that led to a reducing of time for set up of 55
minutes and 43 seconds. Also tools like the Lean start up and communication, operator’s maintenance, 5S,
constant improvements have been studied. An efficiency analysis of the kaizen groups was done that shows that
a lack of motivation exists among the employees. The main explanation for this is that the company does not
have a plan for the organisation structure and neither a plan for implementation of new production forms. The
work contains an extended summary in English, German and Swedish.

Isto é importante pelo fato da indústria de transformação ser o setor de maior capacidade indutora da economia, sendo este seu valor estratégico, e por trazer a ideia de resgate da indústria diante do processo de desindustrialização. A pré-condição para esta proposta é que a indústria seja competitiva a nível internacional e para tal iremos precisar de produtos de classe mundial. A pesquisa é um estudo de caso envolvendo quatro indústrias do móvel residencial de madeira maciça para validar a hipótese de que a conjunção simultânea do design como ferramenta estratégica para os negócios, produção enxuta e incorporação de tecnologia digital no ecossistema da indústria cria as condições favoráveis para o alcance de um produto de classe mundial. A escolha dos casos foi feita de modo a propiciar replicações da teoria prevista. Utilizamos sete categorias de fontes de dados e adotamos a estratégia de seguir nossa proposição teórica que forneceu subsídios ao plano de coleta de dados. Como técnica analítica demos forte ênfase à sobreposição entre coleta e análise, através de percepções registradas ao lado dos dados em matrizes de exposição. Estas também trazem as consistências com a literatura revisada e as evidências entre os casos, de onde extraímos os padrões cruzados que resultaram em um conjunto de balizadores de referência para o alcance de um produto de classe mundial. A conclusão traz os casos selecionados mostrando resultados similares e proporcionando assim consistência com nossas proposições teóricas. Como toda pesquisa, esta também apresenta limitações a serem exploradas: promover generalização analítica com outras tipologias de indústrias de transformação, com outras categorias de indústrias pois as quatro selecionadas são indústrias familiares, e que os balizadores de referência não se esgotam nos encontrados, com novos podendo ser mapeados.
The overall purpose of this research is to generate knowledge on how and why to achieve a world-class product in the Brazilian manufacturing industry, locus of industrial design, with conclusive focus on the solid wood residential furniture industry. This is important because the manufacturing industry is the sector with the greatest inductive capacity of the economy, this being its strategic value, and for bringing the idea of industry rescue in the face of deindustrialization process. The precondition for this proposal is that the industry is internationally competitive and for that we will need world-class products. The research is a case study involving four industries of solid wood residential furniture to validate the hypothesis that the simultaneous conjunction of design as a strategic tools for business, lean manufacturing and incorporation of digital technology into the industry ecosystem creates favourable conditions to reach a world class product. The choice of cases was made in order to provide for replications of the predicted theory. We used seven categories of data sources and adopted the strategy of following our theoretical proposition that provided subsides to the data collection plan. As an analytical technique we strong emphasis on the overlap between collection and analysis through perceptions recorded alongside the data on display matrix. This also brings the consistencies with the revised literature and the evidence between the cases from where we extracted the cross-patterns that resulted in a list of reference beacons for reaching a world-class product. The conclusion brings the selected cases showing similar results and thus providing consistency with our theoretical propositions. Like all research this one also presents limitations to be explored: to promote analytical generalization with other typologies of manufacturing industries, with other categories of industries since the four selected ones are familiar industries and that the reference beacons are not exhausted in the found ones, with new ones being mapped.

The process of product development is an important factor to boost a company's competitive edge and has become increasingly critical due to the growing range and reduced lifecycle of products. A process of product development that adds value to the customer by eliminating waste becomes strategic for the competitiveness of companies. In this context, this research aims at analyzing the process of product development in six furniture companies in the Bento Gonçalves hub. Therefore, we developed an exploratory research through multiple case studies in which data was collected through interviews. According to the references and the analysis performed, we based our study on the Toyota Product Development System described by Morgan and Liker (2008), which discusses waste elimination and customer added value. The contribution of this work is the presentation of a study to analyze product development in furniture companies under the approach of the Toyota Product Development System, since these companies operate in demanding markets that require speed, range and competitive prices. Thus, the study contributes to the extent that its application can bring benefits to companies so as to help them understand what customers consider a value, identifying the Toyota Product Development System as a feasible possibility to analyze product development in the furniture companies.

In order to understand how the manufacturing strategy of small wood furniture factories helps these companies to stay in the market, this paper studies the content of manufacturing strategy, its alignment with the competitive strategy and with the production system. A research methodology combined a cross-sectional exploratory survey with 40 companies and a multiple case research in three companies. It was observed that the manufacturing strategy adopted is aligned with the competitive strategy of companies. It was observed also that the production system is suitable for manufacturing strategy, but results in some incompatibility with the delivery performance and cost. The main limitation of this study is the geographic concentration of companies participants.
Aparentemente, as marcenarias apresentam uma organização produtiva desatualizada, no entanto, elas estão ativas no mercado há bastante tempo. Visando entender como a estratégia de produção adotada pelas microempresas de marcenaria contribui a permanência dessas empresas no mercado, este trabalho estuda o conteúdo de estratégia de produção, seu alinhamento com a estratégia competitiva e com o sistema de produção. Como metodologia de pesquisa combinou-se um levantamento exploratório transversal com 40 empresas e um Estudo de Caso múltiplo em três empresas. Observou-se que a estratégia de produção adotada está alinhada a estratégia competitiva das empresas. Observou-se, também, que o sistema de produção é adequado a estratégia de produção, mas resulta em algumas incompatibilidades com o custo e o desempenho de entregas. A principal limitação deste trabalho é a concentração geográfica das empresas estudadas.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis study examines the aesthetic values of the material wood in furniture manufacturing and how it affects material consumption. Previous research has mainly examined the wood species pine and the aesthetic selection that occurs in wood production. Results in this study have shown that a homogeneous material as possible is preferable, without knots, irregular coloration, and uneven grain. Larger production companies ensure that waste material that remains after sorting becomes pulp or flakes. Furniture manufacturers do not have the resources to give their waste another life, instead they burning the wood for heat. Similar studies have concluded that there are aesthetic preferences on wood but not how to influence consumer choice. How can design change the aesthetic value of the choice of material and prevent unnecessary waste? The purpose of this project is to shed light on the problem of how we consume materials based on aesthetic values and the consequences it has through a critical design perspective. Qualitative methods in the form of expert interviews have been made to gather information on how furniture manufacturers choose their materials based on aesthetic preferences. The results show that a piece of furniture can generate wood waste up to 70 percent of a plank. From a sustainability perspective, it is important to point out the negative consequences that will opt out of a valuable material because it is not aesthetically pleasing.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleStudies in the area of best practices have shown that the implementation of identical practices in different companies may result in diverse performance levels. Studies also suggest the need for deeper analysis of best practices for specific contexts. The main objective of this work is twofold. It analyses the relationship between manufacturing strategy and production practices. It also investigates the effects of such practices on the improvement on business and operational performance indicators in brazilian furniture companies. The secondary objective is to investigate whether such production practices can be considered indeed the best practices for the furniture industry. A conceptual model, with five research hypotheses, has been elaborated following thorough literature review. The empirical research consisted of an explanatory cross-sectional survey. Data have been collected during interviews and direct observations on the shop-floor from 99 furniture companies. Some data have also been collected from online questionnaire available on the internet. The technique used for data analysis was the structural equation modeling (SEM) with the weighted least square (WLS) estimation method. Results indicated that (a) practices of production in different areas direct and indirectly affect operational performance indicators of specific and general areas and also firm indicators; (b) the joint adoption of infrastructure supports key practices that stimulate improved performance of different indicators; (c) most of the practices of production influence operational performance directly and with greater magnitude than firm performance, as this last one is affected indirectly by the practices, through improved operational performance; and (d) practices in the area of development of new products, human resources, production planning and control and quality management were could be considered best practices in the context under study, in accordance with the analyzes of the researcher and theory review.

The main purposes of this study were (1) to acquire a deep understanding of Material Requirements Planning(MRP) and the problems of applying MRP to furniture manufacturing, and (2) to build an improved MRP model for use in the furniture manufacturing industry in Taiwan. The research method in this study is to separate the software system and data bank; a standard flowchart of material requirements was built in software system. The software system was built in the main modules by processing of the standard flowchart, and submodules were established according to their functions. Step by step, hundreds of submodules were created in the software systems. On the other hand, the data bank structure was obtained by regularized theory. The resulting MRP system can rapidly determine the net requirements, bill of materials, order forms, input/output material bill, finished sheet and related items. The system will print out the main production bill, the master production schedule and the bill of material requirements. This result of MRP system will adapt to the dynamic requirement of order production in small business of furniture making in Taiwan. Although, the furnisher lacks of the requirement of information software, the result of this study is easily employed as system modules under the requirement, such as accounting system, input or sales system etc. It will improve by different requirement to become a useful software system for furniture manufacturing industry.

Material requirements planning system(MRP) is a kind of system to deal with information. MRP can produce requirements on the process. MRP can increase the purchase quality ,raise the product quality and promote the service level. The main goal of this study will aim unifying practice and theory and discuss the possibility of using MRP software to furniture manufactures. In this study, group technology being used on more complex cabinet furniture manufacturing process and make the traditional bill of material to become multistage bill of material. The MRP system can determine the bill of material, order forms, input/output material bill and finished sheet. Then print out the information about the main production bill, the master production schedule and the bill of material requirements. The change of the bill of materials requirement being discussed when the storage quantity and safe quantity are different. Finally, try to find the difficulty of using MRP system in furniture manufacturers in Taiwan.

Deeply understanding the situation of MRP (Material Requirements Planning) in furnisher is the purpose of this thesis; in addition, the positive research of MRP and its remarkable advantages while being applied to furnisher is also the same significant aspect in the content. The final goal will aim at unifying practice and theory. After actually visiting factories, I induced the data to 20 points, among which are the information that the former five points mentioned mostly belongs to the description of process as well as the latter fifteen points focus on the problems that the factories will face while executing MRP, that is, the problem may occur in practically applying MRP theory. In the process of position study, each file structure of MRP is obtained by regularized theory. There are two purposes for this regularization :one is for maintaining the completeness of file structure in database; the other is for preventing the data from re-saving in different database. Then , the data will acquired by the relation rule of relation database and figured out according to the purpose of program . At last, Objected- oriented program is applied to expand each sub-system of MRP as the tool of every kind of data. By the result that MRP, simulated, it can rapidly figure out the net requirements. And the information that it offers to controller : Which material is demanded? When is each material asked to finish preparing? How many quantities are needed? Further more , "List of Item code order" as well as "List of Requirement Day" are employed as basis of purchases and stock management, penetrating the importance of MRP in furniture manufacturing industry.

The main purpose of this study is to apply computer simulation to the improvement of furniture manufacturing process, with the expectation that we can apply computer technology to furniture manufacturing industry to promote the efficiency of production, and increase the competition ability. The object of this study is the furniture factories making desks and chairs for primary and high school. At first, we carried out the time study, analyzed the manufacturing flow chart and working-hour, and then built up the basic simulation model to find out the bottleneck of the original manufacturing flow chart, and brought up a better flow chart to simulate in order to achieve improvement. The experimental results are summarized as follows: 1.The result of time study by stopwatch method was the standard process time of a school desk was 23 min 44 sec, a school chair was 26 min 50 sec. 2.By synthesizing each improvement program we could get that: the major bottleneck of process in the factory was tenon hole and sanding angle, and we combined the two same tenon holes in a double-end mortiser and increased the manpower to sanding angle. Both of them could promote the efficiency of production. 3.The real factory operation result of the manufacturing flow chart “TBL1-1” was the same as the result of our simulation. By applying computer simulation we could decide the bottleneck of the operation flow chart, and by the high-speed operation ability of computer, we could input different machine configuration of furniture manufacture to simulate the real operation in order to get better results; it could be proved by this study: it was reliable to apply simulation to furniture manufacture, which it reflected the real situation; the suitable operation flow chart could increase the efficiency of production and cut down the cost.

This research, through various times of case interview, aims to study the back-ground factors as well as mode of entry for Taiwanese furniture manufacturers to invest in Vietnam. Also this research conducts a study on the bussiness strategies of a case study furniture Manufacture in Vietnam. According to this study, high production costs in Taiwan have forced Taiwanese manu-facturers to relocate to other countries. This case study furniture maker chose to move to Vietnam. Its mode of entry was wholly owned. The factors that resulted in this case study maker’s relocation to Vietnam are low local production cost and low cost of fac-tory establishment. This case study maker focuses on making products with higher profits. Its produc-tion mode is mass customization. For non-core products or low-profit products, this maker uses outside contractors, managing strategic sourcing. It actively responds to customers’ requests. It also places importance on management, training and benefit of its employ-ees. With adequate capital, emphasis on management and marketing, this case study furniture manufacturer makes good performance and continues to grow. This research suggests that the case study maker pay more attention to risk man-agement on outside environment.

Abstract The purpose of this study is that to find out the optimum manufacturing condition of one-step molded particleboard for furniture components. In this test, a series of one-step molded particleboard was tested in time study and analyzed procedure of manufacture, in order to realize time of hot pressure which is the key of produced efficiency. Another side, to study waste particles of factory affected the quality of particleboard, condition of hot pressure and raw material of particle were tested in two ser The important experimental results are summarized as followings: 1. Using tested method of stop watch to get the results, standard time of every one-step molded furniture components was as followings : the time of chair''s seat was 4min22sec, the time of chair''s back was 3min58sec, the time of round tabletop was 8 min 38 sec, the time of sofas'' back was 4 min 8 sec, panel of furniture door was 2 min 13 sec. 2. Using different moisture contents of particles to manufacture one-step molded particleboard, which made of dried particles showed higher mechanical strength, especially the temperature of hot pressure was 180℃ and the time of hot pressure was 4 min, it''s bending strength is highest(224kgf/cm2 ), and all the other properties pass the level of CNS 2215 standard, that overlaid with veneer. The combination of pressure condition with temperature 180℃and time 4 min would be the best one during this study. 1. During two research series such as influence of moisture content of particles and condition of hot pressure on one-step molded chair seat made of industrial wood waste, and influence of mixed amount of China-fir wood particles on one-step molded furniture components made of industrial wood waste or rice husks. Using Stress Wave Tester (SWT), Tap Tone Analysis System (TTAS) as Nondestructive Testing (NDT) instruments to determine MOEd (Dynamic Modulus of Elasticity), which compared MOE (Static Modulus of 4. The air-dried particles, which one group before blending and other group after blending, were treated by oven( 60℃) for 15 min ,then to make particleboard , when the temperature of hot pressure was1℃ and the time of hot pressure was 4 min, the molded chair seat showed highest strength, at that time, property of particleboard reached CNS2215 standard of particleboard of overlaid veneer. 5. China-fir particles mixed with industrial waste particles blended with powdered or liquid UF glue to manufacture one-step molded particleboard, the strength of board could pass CNS2215 standard ; the property of strength would be increased with the amount of China-fir particles increased, China fir showed improve efficiency obviously. The purpose of this thesis is to explore the lead-lag relations of Taiwan’s business cycles to 'the production value of Manufacture of Furniture' , 'revenues of building materials, wholesale' , 'revenues of building materials, retailing' from January 1993 to December, 2017, totaling 300 months. To compare them with Taiwan's business cycles, we apply the business indicators in Taiwan published by the National Development Council and the TEJ as well as the highest and lowest points of the stock market index. The results of the research are as follows: 1.Around the business cycle reach to the peaks and lows: Other non-metallic furniture manufacturing industries are behind the peak or bottom, indicating that the economy will rise or fall, and will increase or decrease the production value of other non-metallic furniture manufacturing industries. 2.Around the business cycle reach to the peaks and the stock-market reach to the highs: The percentage difference of other non-metallic furniture manufacturing industry, building materials wholesale industry, implying that those are affected more by the fluctuations of business cycle. 3.Leading/lag indicators during the peak period of the stock market: wooden furniture manufacturing, metallic furniture manufacturing, the production value of other non-metallic furniture manufacturing and 'revenues of building materials, wholesale' , are behind the peak, can be used as a backward indicator during the peak period of the stock market. 4.Around the business cycle goes to lows: The production value of the metallic furniture manufacturing industry has reached the bottom of the valley.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleO presente projeto de dissertação enquadra-se no âmbito do curso de Mestrado Integrado em Engenharia e Gestão Industrial, no 2º semestre do 5º ano da Universidade do Minho. Este trabalho foi desenvolvido numa indústria de mobiliário, a IKEA Industry, tendo como objetivo a redução de custos e desperdícios na área produtiva Foil & Wrap (F&W) através da implementação de práticas da filosofia Lean Manufacturing (LM), uma vez que estas favorecem a inovação e melhoria contínua entre as empresas. Para tal, recorreu-se à metodologia de investigação-ação. Inicialmente realizou-se uma investigação detalhada sobre a filosofia LM, princípios, tipos de desperdícios, benefícios, barreiras e ferramentas, como o Standard Work, SMED, Poka-Yoke, 5’S e Gestão Visual. Depois de uma breve apresentação e caracterização da empresa, a área produtiva F&W foi analisada detalhadamente de forma a diagnosticar e identificar os principais problemas existentes. No que diz respeito à fase de diagnóstico, foram utilizadas várias ferramentas das quais se destacam a análise ABC, diagrama SIPOC, diagrama de Causa-Efeito e VSM. Posteriormente identificaram-se algumas propostas de melhoria com o intuito de solucionar os problemas encontrados através da análise do sistema produtivo, sendo que algumas delas foram implementadas no decorrer do projeto e outras serão apenas mais tarde. Assim, muitas das melhorias implementadas estão relacionadas com a criação de instruções de trabalho normalizadas, que todos os colaboradores possam seguir e compreender. Neste sentido, a maioria das sugestões não acarretam custos significativos para a empresa. Outras propostas passaram pela organização da área produtiva, envolvendo 5’S e Gestão Visual, sendo de salientar a motivação, envolvência e participação dos colaboradores. Deste modo, com a implementação de todas as sugestões de melhoria e comparando os resultados obtidos no mês de Dezembro com os do mês de Junho, conseguiu-se uma diminuição no tempo de paragem em 19,95 horas que se traduz num ganho de 332 766€. Em relação aos tempos de setup, obteve-se uma redução de 10,09 horas, o que equivale a um ganho de 168 301€. No que diz respeito à qualidade dos produtos, verificou-se uma redução de 4 050 produtos não conformes. Relativamente aos valores de sucata, obteve-se uma diminuição significativa de 44 976€. Quanto ao indicador Eficiência e OEE, a melhoria atingida foi de 10,7% e 11,95%, respetivamente.
This dissertation project is part of an integrated Masters in Industrial Engineering and Management, in the 2nd semester of the 5th year of the University of Minho. This research was developed in the furniture industry, IKEA Industry, with the objective of reducing costs and waste in Foil & Wrap (F&W) productive area, through the implementation of Lean Manufacturing (LM) philosophy practices, since these encourage innovation and continuous improvement among firms. To this end, the methodology of action research was used. Initially was carried out a detailed investigation on the LM philosophy, principles, types of waste, benefits, barriers and tools such as Standard work, SMED, Poka-Yoke, 5'S and Visual Management. After a brief presentation and characterization of the company, the productive area F&W was analyzed in detail in order to diagnose and identify major problems. In the diagnostic phase, various tools were used such as ABC analysis, SIPOC diagram, Cause-Effect diagram and VSM. After that the following proposals were identified for improvement in order to solve the problems through the analysis of the production system, some of which were implemented during the project and others will be only at a later stage. Thus, many of the improvements implemented are related to the creation of standardized work instructions, which all employees can follow and understand. In this sense, most of the suggestions do not entail significant costs for the company. Other proposals passed by the organization of the productive area, involving 5'S and Visual Management, emphasizing motivation, involvement and participation of the employees. This way, with the implementation of all suggestions for improvement and comparing the results obtained in the month of December with the month of June we managed to decrease 19,95 hours in downtime in which translates into a gain of € 332,766. Regarding the setup times, it was reduced in 10,09 hours, which equates to a cost of € 168,301. Concerning to product quality, there was a reduction of 4050 in the non-compliant products. Regarding scrap values, was obtained a significant decrease of € 44,976. As for the Efficiency indicator and OEE, the improvement achieved was 10,7% and 11,95%, respectively.

In the research, by bibliography references, and the questionnaires, to demonstrate the effect and the relation between a company products price, quality and service to the customers’ post-purchase behaviors. The purpose of the study result is to suggest the enterprises to operate its business successfully; typically in their product prices, quality, service, future explore and enhance the self-competitiveness. Questionnaires data have been gathered (note: except the invalid questionnaires) were analyzed by using SPSS 12.0 for Windows system: descriptive statistical analysis, reliability analysis/validity analysis, factors analysis, and regression analysis are includ The results are summarized that the prices of the commodity do not impact the satisfaction from customers; on the other side, both in the qualities of product and services are impact to the satisfaction level from customers. For those three factors, the service qualities impact the most than others. Obviously, the post-purchase behavior is involved to the satisfactions from customers directly. The result shows that the customers with highly satisfaction, they are willing to purchase the products in future. Growth is stimulated endogenously, through motivation, while employment is a natural consequence of a larger number of SMEs as well as the expansion of small businesses into larger enterprises. Although it has been noted that SMEs are viable avenues through which jobs can be created, relatively few studies have explicitly investigated the link between intrinsic motivation and small business growth; this study filled the gap by exploring the impact of intrinsic motivation on SMEs’ growth. This is particularly important when one considers that the failure rate of SMEs in SA is very high and it is of great importance to investigate the factors that can impact on the growth of SMEs. Why some individuals are more successful in business than others is a major question in SME research. The common view is that there are a numbers of factors involved related to the entrepreneur or business owners and the business and the business environment. Building on the concept of human capital and psychological theories, this study investigated the influence of intrinsic motivational factors in SME business growth in the eThekwini Metropolitan Area, in South Africa. The target population for this study was SMEs in the furniture manufacturing sector. Based on census study, the sample size of the study was 68 owners of SMEs in the eThekwini Metropolitan Area. Both primary and secondary data sources were used in the study. A quantitative research design was adopted to conduct this research. The survey method, by way of a self-administered questionnaire, was used to collect primary data. Various techniques such as descriptive statistics, Analysis of Variances (ANOVA), factor analysis, Chi-square, and regression analysis were used to analyse the data. The findings of this study revealed that intrinsic motivational factors of SME managers positively impact on the growth of SMEs in SA. The findings further revealed that creativity and necessary entrepreneurial skills influence implementation of sustainable growth of SMEs, and the entrepreneur’s success depends on the identification of crucial entrepreneurial skills for starting a business as well as for helping the business to survive and grow in the early years. Therefore, capacity building for SME owners to sustain business growth is recommended.

The competition between enterprises has become more intense with the rapid development in networking information technology and the competitive globalization trends. How to reduce the uncertainty of the external environment and to maintain the market and long-term cooperative relationship with customers so as to achieve the goal of sustainable management by steady growth and profitability have become the main subjects of enterprise governance in the twenty-first century. This study is based on a case study of Taiwanese traditional industries and forcuses on the implementation of relationship governance consists of level control and common activity between the enterprise and its customers. Aiming on the connection between relationship governance and relationship quality determinant of satisfaction, trust and commitment, we extend to explore the association between relationship quality and customer loyalty. All variables for all measured dimensions in this study are from the reference of the relationship governance of Zaheer and Venkatraman (1995), Heide and John (1990), Wang Dian Wei (2008) and so on. They are the references for the measured dimensions for level control and joint activities. The references for the relationship quality are from Crosby, Evans and Cowles (1990), Anderson and Narus (1990), Reynold and Beatty (1999), Wang Dian Wei (2008), Wang Dong Jia(2008) and so on. They are the references for the measured dimensions for satisfaction, trust and commitment.The main references for customer loyalty are from Berry and Parasuraman (1996), Henning-Thuran, Gwinner and Gremler (2002), Wu Shi-hao (2004),Lin Yao Nan, Xu Da Kang (2008) and so on. This study was procceded with questionnaire. The valid subjects were selected from the customer database of the case enterprise. Through various analysis, the results of this study find that relationship governance positively affects relationship quality, and that relationship quality positively affects customer loyalty, and that relationship governance has positive effect on customer loyalty. It indicates that as an enterprise enhances the application of relationship governance to the customers, the relationship quality between the company and its customers would be upgraded accordingly. Moreover, the uplift of the main factors of relationship quality between an enterprise and its customers such as satisfaction, trust and commitment would have significant impact on customer loyalty. The enhancement of good interactive relationship between the organizations is helpful to manage long-term relationship with each other so as to build and positive influence customer loyalty. Finally, according to the related research results, we propose some suggestion to the relevant industries. We hope our suggestion can be referred to while making strategies to maintain customer relationship so as to build a good theoretical model for business research.

Taiwanese business people whose factories were facing difficulties in Taiwan has been gradually moved factories and formed clustering in Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong and Dong Nai Provinces in Vietnam. Hence, this research takes Taiwanese furniture manufacture as an example to investigate into what kind of factors induce Taiwanese business people to settle down in these three locations then make cooperation; and what are the state and the types of the industrial clustering in these three locations. The study designs the research structure so called ‘three pyramids and trapezoid model’. The result is found that the Taiwanese furniture factories settled on these three locations because of national resources and the surrounding subcontractors. As under the ‘three pyramids and trapezoid model’ research structure, the Ho Chi Minh City and the Dong Nai Province are formed the type of industrial clustering so called ‘individual solidify’, and the Binh Duong Province formed the type of industrial clustering called ‘policy-factory harmony’ and ‘individual solidify’. The unique of the Ho Chi Minh City is the resources of woods and the value of geographical location, such as near the harbor and near the country of Cambodia; Dong Nai Province is the resources of woods, labors and earlier cheap lands, subcontractor chain and intra-factories’ management. Last the unique of the Binh Duong Province is the complete subcontractor chain, and the flexible implementation of policy by its province’s government. The study suggests Taiwanese furniture factories should use the surrounding subcontractors to enhance the production.

However, many small, medium and micro enterprises are constrained by an array of problems such as a lack of access to finance, training services and physical infrastructure. Also, small, medium and micro enterprises are forced to operate in highly competitive environments and transition economies and this limits the ability of small, medium and micro enterprises and even large organisations to operate successfully and efficiently. Consequently, a strategy focused on inter-firm linkages and collaboration could alleviate the problems faced by small, medium and micro enterprises. Research indicates that inter-firm linkages or clustering can lead to the emergence of collective efficiency, which facilitates the industrialisation of SMMEs and has the potential of contributing to economic development (Schmitz, 1995). A cluster would involve interaction between enterprises or networks of enterprises that produce identical or similar products. These linkages create 'collective efficiency' which is critical in sustaining a competitive edge. The ability of small, medium and micro enterprises to maintain this competitive edge will ensure greater success and opportunities for specialisation and differantion.

The strategy to establish new overseas factories for Taiwan corporations is mostly relying on effect of industry's clustering, and this appearance also attracts the attention of the Taiwan’s banker as discovered, especially rapidly moving to China in recent years. A lot of relevant enterprises are all forced to follow and usually move clusters based on a large number of corporations with close connection or supporting function. The object of this research is to focus on the industry of wooden furniture that has established the factories in Guangdong, China prior to year 2004 and the objective is to analyze the relevance between the industry clustering and the policy of credit of Taiwan’s bankers, not considering the external factor of the industry and the influence of the economic situation. The purposes of study mainly are: (1) to probe into the present situation and mutual relationship of industry clustering (2) to analyze the relevance to the level of industry's clustering between the factor of Credit policy of bank and managing performance. (3) to probe into the impact on the factor of credit policy in the bank between industry's clustering degree. Probe into the definition, questionnaire of developing idea structure, research supposing, parameter and design etc. and carry on general survey according to documents, and return to the analytical method to assay with relevant analysis. It discovers the clustering’s degree that is higher, it has the good factor of credit policy in the bank to influence, especially and the better one influencing of ”horizontal cooperation” is the higher with ”vertical cooperation” in the clustering degree, show in industry's clustering, is the upstream and downstream relation or the partner the cooperative tightness each other of partner's relation is the higher, it is relatively good to the factor of credit policy in the bank, if it manages the performance to help to awarding the factor of credit policy well even more well. The research result may be useful for Taiwan companies as reference to make arrangement tactics in the future.

Business process reengineering is applicable to all types of organizations and enterprises, but there are many fundamental differences in the purpose, structure, model and process. No universal tools or models are used while introducing business process reengineering, which, at present, is just a concept. It is often to describe the target under imagination or experience in the implementation, but it cannot explain how to achieve the goal. The ISO-9001 quality management system of International Standards Organization has a complete operating structure, common operating standards and a rigorous audit system. It focuses on the establishment of the top-down overall operating standards and processes. Meanwhile it has to accept the certification of International Standards Organization. Through literature analysis, the reengineering process is found to highly correlate with international standard ISO-9001 quality management system structures and procedures. Thus, there is no conflict or violation. In the narrow sense of business performance, simple financial indicators are often used to reflect whether the company's economic goals are met. Common indicators include: corporate competitiveness (customer satisfaction), productivity (productive capacity), quality yield (production quality) and cost reduction (production efficiency), etc. (Venkatraman and Ramanujam, 1986). Therefore, this study takes the example of Yilan S Company's ISO-9001 quality management system for enterprise quality control process reengineering. It uses the "Comparative Analysis Approach" to test the company's production quality in the aspects of production quality, customer satisfaction, productive capacity, and production efficiency before and after business process reengineering. Business performance was found to develop positively. It turns out that the ISO-9001 quality management system can be used as a tool for business process reengineering. The ISO-9001 quality management system is indeed beneficial to the business performance of traditional manufacturing.

Todavia, é ainda um sector muito fragmentado, caracterizado por uma falta de eficiência produtiva e uma organização industrial pouco desenvolvida. Por outro lado, o parque de máquinas instalado é relativamente moderno e tecnologicamente capaz de todos os processos de produção; porém, a inexperiência ou a falta de formação e conhecimento dos trabalhadores, conduz ao seu sub-aproveitamento. Apesar de todo o know-how existente na maioria das empresas deste sector industrial (relacionado com todos os processos, recursos e capacidades), estas nem sempre conseguem encontrar a melhor solução para uma organização sustentável. Assim, uma re-organização do sistema de produção – e a sua consequente optimização – é considerada o factor-chave fundamental, de modo a alcançar uma produção eficiente e sustentável. Este trabalho contribui para o estudo e desenvolvimento de uma metodologia aplicada em ambiente industrial, onde o fluxo produtivo e o fluxo de informação são optimizados. Desta forma, é efectuada uma análise a todo o processo de produção, do ponto de vista da informação técnica, ao longo de todas as etapas produtivas (projecto, fabrico e montagem). Na fase de projecto é realizada uma análise mais completa e detalhada, permitindo a análise e identificação de todos os parâmetros críticos. Assim, este trabalho pretende o desenvolvimento de uma metodologia de trabalho, que assenta no desenvolvimento de modelos de informação, alcançada por um completo tratamento computacional (em Microsoft Excel) das especificações técnicas e todos os outros parâmetros de produção, ao longo de todo o processo. Consequentemente, este trabalho visa também a optimização do fluxo produtivo. Por fim, os modelos desenvolvidos e todas as metodologias correspondentes, bem como os resultados da re-organização da produção, são comprovadas num caso de estudo no meio industrial (no segmento do mobiliário de cozinha).
According to the major industrial associations, the furniture industry is one of the most important sectors in Portugal (both at the industrial and economical level). Nevertheless, it still is a very fragmented industry, characterized by a lack of productive efficiency and a poorly developed industrial organization. Contrasting with this scenario, the installed machinery is relatively modern and technologically capable for all production processes, but the workers’ inexperience and lack of formation/knowledge leads to its underutilization. All of these factors combined together lead to an inefficient and low production capacity. Thus, despite all the production and management know-how (related to processes, resources and capabilities) available in the majority of furniture industries, these still cannot succeed in finding the best organization and sustainable solution. Therefore, a re-organization of the manufacturing system – and its consequent optimization – is considered as the imperative key to achieve an eco-efficient production. This work contributes to the research and development of a methodology to be applied in the industrial environment in which the technical data and workflow are optimized. In order to do so, an analysis of the entire process of furniture production is conducted, throughout all the stages (design, manufacturing and assembly) and at the communications level. A revision of technical specifications exchanged between those main departments was performed considering both the computational and paper based workflow. The design project phase requires a complete and thorough analysis, as the most important phase in all the furniture production process, allowing the identification (and further optimization) of its crucial parameters. The main focus is the development of a standard information model, made by full computational treatment (using Microsoft Excel) of the technical specifications and all other production parameters throughout the whole process, envisaging the plant workflow optimization. Finally, the developed framework and corresponding methodologies, as well as the results of the production reorganization, are demonstrated in an industrial case study (in the kitchen cabinets segment).
