Recently, the study of modeling a non-stationary signal as a superposition of amplitude and frequency-modulated Fourier-like oscillatory modes has been a very active research area. The synchrosqueezing transform (SST) is a powerful method for instantaneous frequency estimation and component separation of non-stationary multicomponent signals. The short-time Fourier transform-based SST (FSST) reassigns the frequency variable to sharpen the time-frequency representation and to separate the components of a multicomponent non-stationary signal. Very recently the FSST with a time-varying parameter, called the adaptive FSST, was introduced. The simulation experiments show that the adaptive FSST is very promising in instantaneous frequency estimation of the component of a multicomponent signal, and in accurate component recovery. However, the theoretical analysis of the adaptive FSST has not been carried out. In this paper, we study the theoretical analysis of the adaptive FSST and obtain the error bounds for the instantaneous frequency estimation and component recovery with the adaptive FSST and the second-order adaptive FSST.

Objective The Four Square Step Test (FSST) is a tool that assesses dynamic balance during obstacle step-over. To date, few studies have used the FSST to measure balance in patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD). This study aimed to verify that patients with PD, even at the de novo early stage, take more time to perform the FSST and identify which factors, cognitive status or cardinal motor symptoms, are related most to FSST scores. Methods Thirty-five newly diagnosed drug-naïve patients with PD and 17 controls completed the FSST. The Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS), Hoehn and Yahr (H&Y) stage, spatiotemporal gait parameters, and neuropsychological test battery were also assessed in the PD group. Results Mean FSST performance time was 8.20 ± 1.61 seconds in patients with PD, which was significantly more than the control group (7.13 ± 1.10 seconds, p = 0.018). UPDRS part III total score and H&Y stage were not significantly associated with FSST, but among the UPDRS subscores, only the postural instability/gait disturbance subscore showed a significant association. Regarding the association between FSST and cognition, the Trail Making Test-B and the Color Word Stroop Test showed strongly inverse correlations with FSST (rho = -0.598 and -0.590, respectively). With respect to gait parameters, double support time was significantly associated with FSST score (rho = 0.342, p = 0.044); however, other parameters, including velocity and step length, were not associated with the FSST.Conclusion The FSST can be used in the clinic to assess dynamic balance with cognitive demands even in the early stages of PD.

Objective:The aim was to compare the use of the four square step test (FSST) and the FSST with foam surface (FSST + foam) scores for discriminating between adults, faller older adults, and nonfaller older adults.Methods:Fifty-four participants (18 for each group) were assessed using the FSST and FSST + foam. The area under the curve (AUC) of receiver operating characteristic curve was calculated and used to compare the accuracy of the tests. Results:The FSST + foam was more accurate than FSST for discriminating between faller and nonfaller older adults (area under the curves were 0.765 and 0.725, respectively) and between nonfaller older adults and adults (area under the curves were 0.99 and 0.95, respectively). The cutoff score for discriminating between faller and nonfaller older adults was 11.21, with a sensitivity and specificity of 0.889 and 0.611, respectively. Conclusion:FSST + foam could be used as an alternative assessment for discriminating between adults, faller, and nonfaller older adults.

Synchrosqueezing transform (SST) is a high resolution time frequency representation technology for nonstationary signal analysis. The short time Fourier transform-based synchrosqueezing transform (FSST) and the S transform-based synchrosqueezing transform (SSST) time frequency methods are effective tools for bearing fault signal analysis. The fault signals belong to a non-Gaussian and nonstationary alpha (α) stable distribution with 1<α<2 and even the noises being also α stable distribution. The conventional FSST and SSST methods degenerate and even fail under α stable distribution noisy environment. Motivated by the fact that fractional low order STFT and fractional low order S-transform work better than the traditional STFT and S-transform methods under α stable distribution noise environment, we propose in this paper the fractional lower order FSST (FLOFSST) and the fractional lower order SSST (FLOSSST). In addition, we derive the corresponding inverse FLOSST and inverse FLOSSST. The simulation results show that both FLOFSST and FLOSSST perform better than the conventional FSSST and SSST under α stable distribution noise in instantaneous frequency estimation and signal reconstruction. Finally, FLOFSST and FLOSSST are applied to analyze the time frequency distribution of the outer race fault signal. Our results show that FLOFSST and FLOSSST extract the fault features well under symmetric stable (SαS) distribution noise.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of Feldenkrais Method balance classes on balance and mobility in older adults. This was a prospective non-randomized controlled study with pre/post measures. The setting for this study was the general community. A convenience sample of 26 community-dwelling older adults (median age 75 years) attending Feldenkrais Method balance classes formed the Intervention group. Thirty-seven volunteers were recruited for the Control group (median age 76.5 years). A series of Feldenkrais Method balance classes (the 33312Getting Grounded Gracefully33313 series), two classes per week for 10 weeks, were conducted. Main outcome measures were Activities-Specific Balance Confidence (ABC) questionnaire, Four Square Step Test (FSST), self-selected gait speed (using GAITRite instrumented gait mat). At re-testing, the Intervention group showed significant improvement on all of the measures (ABC,P= .016, FSST,P= .001, gait speed,P< .001). The Control group improved significantly on one measure (FSST,P< .001). Compared to the Control group, the Intervention group made a significant improvement in their ABC score (P= .005), gait speed (P= .017) and FSST time (P= .022). These findings suggest that Feldenkrais Method balance classes may improve mobility and balance in older adults.

Low frequency oscillation is an important attribute of human brain activity, and the amplitude of low frequency fluctuation (ALFF) is an effective method to reflect the characteristics of low frequency oscillation, which has been widely used in the treatment of brain diseases and other fields. However, due to the low accuracy of the current analysis methods for low frequency signal extraction of ALFF, we propose the Fourier-based synchrosqueezing transform (FSST), which is often used in the field of signal processing to extract the ALFF of the low frequency power spectrum of the whole-time dimension. The low frequency characteristics of the extracted signal are compared with those of FSST and fast Fourier transform (FFT) through the resting-state data. It is clear that the signal extracted by FSST has more low frequency characteristics, which is significantly different from FFT.

The intrinsic characteristics of the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development (FSSD) make it useful in moving society towards sustainability. However, most of the change agents who work with the FSSD report that it is not diffused widely enough to have a systemic impact on society. The purpose of the study is to enable those who wish to foster such diffusion to be more effective in their efforts by giving them information they need to strategically plan those efforts. An ‘important factors for diffusion’ lens is constructed from Diffusion of Innovations theory and social marketing concepts, and verified with case studies of the diffusion of Biomimicry 3.8, GRI and Cradle to Cradle. 152 current barriers and enablers to broader diffusion of the FSSD are identified from interviews with 27 practitioners and a survey of 58 additional practitioners. These are scored against the lens to determine the current diffusibility of the FSSD, then distilled and influence flows between them mapped, to identify seven leverage points for broader diffusion. Interrelations between these leverage points, as well as other emergent themes, are discussed, conclusions are drawn, and further research suggested.

Frequency Selective Surfaces (FSS) are periodic structures in one or two dimensions that act as spatial filters, can be formed by elements of type conductors patches or apertures, functioning as filters band-stop or band-pass respectively. The interest in the study of FSS has grown through the years, because such structures meet specific requirements as low-cost, reduced dimensions and weighs, beyond the possibility to integrate with other microwave circuits. The most varied applications for such structures have been investigated, as for example, radomes, antennas systems for airplanes, electromagnetic filters for reflective antennas, absorbers structures, etc. Several methods have been used for the analysis of FSS, among them, the Wave Method (WCIP). Are various shapes of elements that can be used in FSS, as for example, fractal type, which presents a relative geometric complexity. This work has as main objective to propose a simplification geometric procedure a fractal FSS, from the analysis of influence of details (gaps) of geometry of the same in behavior of the resonance frequency. Complementarily is shown a simple method to adjust the frequency resonance through analysis of a FSS, which uses a square basic cell, in which are inserted two reentrance and dimensions these reentrance are varied, making it possible to adjust the frequency. For this, the structures are analyzed numerically, using WCIP, and later are characterized experimentally comparing the results obtained. For the two cases is evaluated, the influence of electric and magnetic fields, the latter through the electric current density vector. Is realized a bibliographic study about the theme and are presented suggestions for the continuation of this work

The compliance with Head Injury Criteria (HIC) specified in 14 CFR 23.562 [1] and CFR 25.562 [2] poses a significant problem for many segments of the aerospace industry. The airlines and the manufacturers of jet transports have made claims of high costs and significant schedule overruns during the development and certification of 16G seats because of the difficulties encountered in meeting this requirement. The current practice is to conduct Full Scale Sled Tests (FSST) on impact sleds. This approach can be expensive, since a new seat may be needed for each test. Moreover, some consider the HIC sensitive to changes in the test conditions, such as sled pulse, seat belt elongation, etc., resulting in HIC results from FSSTs showing poor repeatability. These difficulties make it desirable to devise a cheaper, faster, and more repeatable alternative to FSSTs. This paper describes an attempt to address these issues by designing a device, the National Institute for Aviation Research (NIAR) HIC Component Tester (NHCT) using various multibody tools. This device was then fabricated and its performance evaluated against FSSTs conducted under similar test conditions for some typical impact events that occur in an aircraft cabins e.g. impact with bulkheads. The factors compared for this evaluation are the head impact angle, head impact velocity, HIC, HIC window, peak head C.G. resultant acceleration, average head C.G. resultant acceleration, and head C.G. resultant acceleration profiles. The results of these evaluations show that the NHCT already produces test results that correlate significantly with FSST results for impact targets such as bulkheads and its target envelope is expected eventually to include objects such as seat backs.

The Head Injury Criteria (HIC) compliance is an important aircraft interior furnishing certification. This certification confirms the compliance of the HIC requirement as per 14CFR 23.562 [1] and 14 CFR 25.562 [2]. Full scale crash sled tests are widely used destructive test method to show the required compliance of head injury criteria. This method is costly, time consuming and non repeatable. Factors such as sled pulse shape, belt slack, seating posture of the dummy results change in the dynamic conditions which ultimately affect the HIC value. This poses a significant challenge and high costs to the manufactures to show the compliance of aircraft interior furnishings for the certification process. These factors compel the development of alternative method to certify the cabin furnishings for HIC compliance without consuming aircraft seats, which is more repeatable and non time consuming. The laboratory HIC component tester is the device developed to duplicate the full scale crash HIC result. This device is capable to produce similar dynamic conditions upon impact with the test article resulting duplication of the full scale crash test result. The current model is developed with the rigid neck of polycarbonate unlike the flexible neck of Hybrid II part 572 ATD (Anthropomorphic Test Dummy). This study investigates the scope of improvement in dynamic characteristic of the HCTD (HIC Component Testing Device) with flexible neck. Flexible neck performance is evaluated using validated computational model of the HCTD. The computational model is used to simulate the correlation between the HCTD with rigid neck and HCTD with flexible neck with FSST (Full Scale Sled Test). The result demonstrates that HTCD correlates well with the FSST when flexible neck is used and provides conservative results with rigid neck.

Generating a tensile strain capacity (TSC) prediction model is a difficult challenge in applied mechanics. Because current models are relatively new and extensive strain-based design (SBD) pipeline service experience does not exist, rigorous model validation using full-scale tests (FSTs) is paramount. The lessons learned from 159 FSTs were presented previously and the data base has grown to 173 tests. This data base is used to assess the accuracy of a relatively new TSC prediction model. The new model simulates a single, surface breaking weld flaw; however, some of the FSTs contained interacting or embedded flaws or unintentional weld defects, while others failed by brittle fracture, and still others experienced welding problems rendering them unsuitable for model validation. Of 173 tests, a smaller number (122, 101, or 89 depending on the goal) is used for comparison to the new model. This paper describes (1) the importance of reliable FSTs, (2) how the 173 tests were judged for suitability in model accuracy assessment, and (3) the use of the FST data to develop a safety factor for strain-based engineering critical assessment (SBECA). The safety factor is generated from a 95% upper confidence limit on the ratio of predicted-to-measured TSC. The safety factor is 1.88. Using the new model and this safety factor, a TSC prediction equation is provided for use in SBECA. The practical meaning of this is that if either TSC or tolerable defect size is calculated using the new model, then the probability of being non-conservative is estimated to be 5%.

There are generally two reasons for conducting full-scale tests (FSTs) for the measurement of pipe or weld strain capacity, (1) to generate data useful in verifying the accuracy of a strain capacity prediction model, or (2) to test materials being considered for use. The former case involves exploring variables important to the scope of the model, while the latter involves project specific materials and girth weld procedures often combined with upper bound cases of weld misalignment. Because the challenge of strain-based design is relatively new, FSTs should be used for both reasons cited above. This paper provides observations, lessons learned, and recommendations regarding full-scale pipe strain capacity tests. This information has been developed through the conduct, witness, or review of 159 FSTs. One of the most important aspects of full-scale testing is the preparation of welded pipe test specimens. It is imperative that the specimens be fabricated with materials of known properties and that all possible measures be taken to limit variations from the intended specimen design. It has been observed that unexpected results are often due to irregularities in pipe material strength, weld strength, weld toughness, or the presence of unintended weld defects in a specimen designed to contain just man-made defects. Post-test fractography and metallurgical examination are very useful in explaining the performance of a FST; therefore, failure analysis is discussed.

Novel semi-active vibration controllers are developed in this study for magnetorheological (MR) fluid-based vibration control systems, including: (1) a band-pass frequency shaped semi-active control algorithm, (2) a narrow-band frequency shaped semi-active control algorithm. These semi-active vibration control algorithms designed without resorting to the implementation of an active vibration control algorithms upon which is superposed the energy dissipation constraint. These new Frequency Shaped Semi-active Control (FSSC) algorithms require neither an accurate damper (or actuator) model, nor system identification of damper model parameters for determining control current input. In the design procedure for the FSSC algorithms, the semi-active MR damper is not treated as an active force producing actuator, but rather is treated in the design process as a semi-active dissipative device. The control signal from the FSSC algorithms is a control current, and not a control force as is typically done for active controllers. In this study, two FSSC algorithms are formulated and performance of each is assessed via simulation. Performance of the FSSC vibration controllers is evaluated using a single-degree-of-freedom (DOF) MR fluid-based engine mount system. To better understand the control characteristics and advantages of the two FSSC algorithms, the vibration mitigation performance of a semi-active skyhook control algorithm, which is the classical semi-active controller used in base excitation problems, is compared to the two FSSC algorithms.

The analyses regards the structural behavior of FSSW joints in order to assess the failure mode and its dependence on mechanical properties distribution of the sheets material and, consequently, on process parameters. FSSW joint is analyzed by means of a complex 3D FE model, which allows to evaluate, in a parametric manner, the multifaceted internal geometry of the joint and the actual distribution of material mechanical characteristics after welding. Experimental tests allowed to verify the results and to calibrate the material characteristics in the FE model.

This paper studies an electrically assisted friction stir spot welding (FSSW) process for joining aluminum alloy 6061-T6 to TRIP 780 steel. The electrical current shows to reduce the axial plunge force and assist the material flow of the aluminum matrix during the welding process. When electrical pulses and direct current (DC) with the same energy input are applied, the results show insignificant differences. Bulk material flow can be observed in the weld cross sections. A more uniform hook is generated at the Fe/Al interface after applying the current. Besides, the diffusion of aluminum atoms into the steel matrix is enhanced. Regarding the weld quality, electrically assisted FSSW improves the joint lap shear strength when compared with regular FSSW process.

A modified low-Reynolds number k-ε model (named YI-diffn. model) for predicting effects of high free stream turbulence (FST) on momentum transport and heat transfer in a flat plate turbulent boundary layer is presented. An additional turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) diffusion term incorporating the effects of FST intensity (velocity scale) and length scale was included in the TKE equation. This model was developed with experience from many years of experimental and theoretical studies in the area of high FST flows. The constant cμ in the equation for the transport coefficient μt was modified using experimental data. These modifications were applied to a well-tested k-ε model (K-Y Chien called KYC in this study) under high FST conditions (initial FST intensity, Tui > 5%). Models were implemented in a 2-D boundary layer code. The high FST zero pressure gradient data sets against which the predictions (in the turbulent region) were compared had initial FST intensities of 6.53% and 25.7%. In a previous paper, it was shown that predictions of the original k-ε models became poorer (over prediction up to more than 50% for skin friction coefficient and Stanton number, and under prediction of TKE up to more than 50%) as FST increased to about 26%. In comparison, the new model developed here provided excellent results (within ±3% of experimental data) for skin friction coefficient and Stanton number for both the data sets. TKE results were excellent for Tui = 6.53%, but have scope for improvement in the case of Tui = 25.7%. The present model incorporates physics of transport of free stream turbulence in turbulence modeling and provides a new method for simulating flows with high FST. Future work will focus upon improving the model further and applying it to practical applications like flow over gas turbine blades.
