Marie, Laurent. „The French Communist Party and French cinema 1944-1999“. Thesis, University of Warwick, 2000. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/3061/.

Annotation:
This dissertation examines the relationship between the French Communist Party (PCF) and French cinema between 1944 and 1999. The approach adopted is an historical and political one, exploring the context behind the changing relations between the Party and the film industry. Both institutions have played a crucial part in the weaving of the political and cultural fabric of the country throughout the period. For both the PCF and French cinema, the Liberation marked a new beginning and a new relationship with the French state. Looking closely at the French Communist outlets over four key periods - the Liberation and the Cold War, the New Republic, May '68 and the 1990s -, the evolution of the positions of the PCF regarding both film as an industry and film as an art-form is examined with particular emphasis on the links and the differences between the film policy advocated by the PCF and its critical discourse on French cinema. Since 1944 and PCF has kept a close watch on France's film industry, participating, from the Blum-Byrne agreements to the demonstrations against the MAI, in every battle for its defence. The unique blend of State involvement in film matters and professional resilience in the face of foreign competition which defines French cinema today owes much to this Communist involvement. Yet in spite of this continuous support the PCF has not left a strong mark on French cinema either in aesthetic or ideological terms, and the silver screen has hardly ever broadcast the PCF viewpoint. The reluctance shown by some in the Party to acknowledge the concept of auteur as well as the Party's own history serve to explain this absence. Until the 1980s, the PCF's discourse was dominated by the defence of France's national culture, although some Communist critics and auteurs disputed this vision tainted with economism.

Mason, Jon-Kris. „French language, and French manners, in eighteenth-century British literature“. Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2011. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.577523.

Annotation:
Eighteenth-century social and political relationships between Britain and France have long enjoyed great scholarly interest, and the linguistic influence of French on English is being defined with increasing precision. Until now, however, there have been only brief stylistic considerations of the literary role played by French in eighteenth-century English prose literature. My thesis seeks to address that deficiency by investigating the literary usage and significance of French language in English literature. As the period is noted for the explosion of interest in language and its cultural ramifications; this study continuously considers the metonymical function of French usage as a signifier of broader social corollaries. This thesis attempts to forge a link between identifiable social attitudes and their incarnation in specific linguistic usage. I initially set out a context of opinion on French language and culture, and attitudes to borrowing and imitation, derived from journal, essay and treatise. Such a context demonstrates that France is unrivalled as the 'other' against which British identities were forged. Rates of lexical borrowing from French reached an historical low in the eighteenth century, and the proliferation of grammars and dictionaries bespoke a desire to define, limit, and control language. Yet the language of the developing novel, I argue, was inflected with French idiom, an idiom that offered a uniquely rich and potent strain of evocation and association. Writers of the novel, from Richardson and Smollett, to Brooke, and Burney, deploy French flexibly but with precision; each author exercises great control in borrowing idiom for purposes ranging from plot development and characterisation, to satire and pathos. My research explores those constructs, and because I found that the question of literary French usage is gendered, much of my thesis is structured along lines of gender. The letters of Lord Chesterfield, Samuel Johnson, and William Shenstone, Fanny Boscawen, Hannah More, and Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, form counterpoints to the novel, and establish areas both of commonality and divergence between French usage in the fictional and familiar prose of men and women. In its final chapter, this study turns explicitly to the wider social concerns underlying preceding discussions, viz. the significance of French usage to English manners and morals in the novels ranging from John Cleland's Fanny Hill to Charlotte Lennox's The Female Quixote. This thesis necessarily incorporates extensive but germane quotation, and embraces historical sociolinguistics, social history, stylistics, literary theory, and practical literary criticism. While this study cannot claim to be comprehensive, it seeks to open out a field of study hitherto neglected.

Cooper, Nicola J. „French colonial discourses : the case of French Indochina 1900-1939“. Thesis, University of Warwick, 1997. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/35581/.

Der volle Inhalt der Quelle
Annotation:
This thesis focuses upon French colonial discourses at the height of the French imperial encounter with Indochina: 1900-1939. It examines the way in which imperial France viewed her role in Indochina, and the representations and perceptions of Indochina which were produced and disseminated in a variety of cultural media emanating from the metropole. Framed by political, ideological and historical developments and debates, each chapter develops a socio-cultural account of France's own understanding of her role in Indochina, and her relationship with the colony during this crucial period. The thesis asserts that although consistent, French discourses of Empire do not present a coherent view of the nation's imperial identity or role, and that this lack of coherence is epitomised by the Franco-indochinese relationship. The thesis seeks to demonstrate that French perceptions of Indochina were marked above all by a striking ambivalence, and that the metropole's view of the status of Indochina within the Empire was often contradictory, and at times paradoxical. Indeed, the thesis argues that Indochina was imagined through a series of antitheses which reflect the incoherent nature of French colonial discourse during this period. This thesis uses as its primary material a variety of key cultural media which informed the popular perception of Indochina during this period: metropolitan and Franco-indochinese school manuals; the writings and designs of French colonial urbanists; the works of influential colonial apologists; 'official' texts relating to the organisation and impact of the Exposition coloniale of 1931; travel journalism; and metropolitan fiction relating to Indochina. The discursive approach that this thesis takes, focusing clearly upon the socio-cultural dimension, should provide an important re-evaluation of French Indochina and its legacy, and should make a contribution to the understanding of France's relations with her colonial territories during the first half of the twentieth century.

This play is a comedy which revolves around the importance of a French Chair (Louis Xiii) in the life of a family. A young newlywed woman discovers that her husband has a "secret" half sister born out of wedlock. Her mother-in-law has had an affair with a French man, but her husband always believed she had been abused. The young lady senses something is not clear and decides to look for her "half" sister-in-law. She does and manages to organize a get-together to bring everyone in the same place and finally understand what really happened. Eventually, her mother-in-law, now a widower, falls in love again with her ex-lover and they decide to marry. The French Chair was a reason of fights in the young couple and with the mother-in-law. But at the end we learn that young lady's half sister-in-law was conceived on this chair.

Annotation:
This dissertation is an attempt to understand how early twenty-first century French films (2000-2002) position themselves in relation to late twentieth century feminist public discourse in France. More specifically, this study will examine how cinematic narratives are modifiers of feminist debate. Four selected films are analyzed for this research: Catherine Breillat's Fat Girl (2002), Patrice Leconte's Girl on the Bridge (2000), Pascale Bailly's God is Great and I am not (2002), and Agnes Varda's The Gleaners and I (2001). The study focuses on how these four films illustrate the historical moment of the changing role of French women in society, as they move from a more private sphere to a larger public sphere. Following a renewed feminist debate in the 1990s, both male and female film directors express their ideas on this public discourse, that of the future role of women in French society. These films depict, through the narrative medium of cinema, proposals for a revised role of women, with its assets and its difficulties. Often, there is a merging of the private and public realms of the woman protagonist's life. A critical reading of each of the four chosen films for study traces the methods used by directors to depict a public debate, focusing on those techniques unique to film. This study shows the power of cinema to construct, propose, question and/or resolve potential real-life situations in relation to a historical public discourse.

The French flute tradition is remarkable and is admired by flautists, teachers and students of the flute all over the world. The dissertation researched the development of this tradition from the pre-Baroque period through to the modern era and tried to determine the underlying factors that stimulated its development specifically in France. The first key was added to the flute in France and with this the Hotteteres created the blueprint for the modern flute of today. During the Classical period the conservative French retarded the development of the instrument and the repertoire for the flute by initially rejecting additional keys.

For this work of thesis I chose a rather interesting novel which deserves in my opinion, a thorough analysis: The French Lieutenant's Woman. John Fowles, the author, wrote in 1967 but curiously decided to set it exactly one century before, in 1867. This choice turns out to be interesting even as far as its analysis is concerned. The French Lieutenant's Woman embodies postmodern features especially looking a, not only the narration but also the author's choice to provide three different and possible ending; and at the same time both because of its setting, its plot and the characters chosen, the novel seems to belong to a work of fiction typical of the Victorian age. This thesis also deals with another significant aspect, which is the recurrent theme of the novel, which is freedom. Freedom not only in the characters, but aslo freedom of the reader. Fowles hints at this theme since the very beginning through the use of epigraphs which introduce each chapter. The first one, at the beginning of the Whole novel, comes Fromm Marx's Zur Judenfrage: "Every emancipation is a restoration of the human world and of human relationships to man himself". Emancipation concerning particularly the main character: Charles Smithson.

Multilingual films, such as Lost in Translation (2003), have recently become a phenomenon. Various popular television series also feature an element of multilingualism in their plots. This inclusion of the cultural "other" and its language, specifically, the dubbing into French of "French situations" in American television shows, presents an interesting challenge for audiovisual translation (AVT). In my study, I begin by discussing research on multilingualism in literature, film and television. I then discuss the relevance of translation studies concepts to AVT, and apply them in examining the dubbing into French of American television shows that include situations involving the French language. I describe and analyze how this challenge has been met, where the "other" in the original is the television viewer for whom the show is translated. My work studies the many different strategies used to deal with a very specific translation problem in the field of AVT.

The thesis investigates and compares native French and second-generation North African French citizens' perspectives on the 'crisis' surrounding France's North African minority through surveys and interviews. Results indicate that the major point of contention between the two groups is in their views on North African French integration: native French being more likely to believe that North African French neither feel French nor share their same fundamental norms. Interviews with North African French indicate that they feel they are still treated as immigrants and rejected by French society, which consequently has an impact on their overall social cohesion, socioeconomic and political equality and sense of belonging. The diversity of opinions amongst respondents also indicates that in most cases North African French are indistinguishable from their native French counterparts and are, paradoxically, good examples of Republican integration.

The following thesis used a modified version of the matched guise technique to investigate French second language and French Immersion teachers‟ attitudes towards different French accented speakers. A total of thirty-four raters were asked to judge equally competent speech samples derived from five accented speakers: European, Québécois, Lebanese, Haitian and Anglophone. Raters judged the speakers using a four point Likert scale and providing qualitative data in the form of comments on 6 oral quality criterion derived from the Conseil Supérieur de la Langue Française and 3 prestige criterion derived from previous research (Giles, 1974; Labov, 1966; Lambert et al., 1960). The mixed method evaluations indicate that accent and the affiliated socially constructed stereotypes play a strong role in how different accented speakers are perceived in terms of oral capacities and prestige despite their equally competent performances. Likewise the data shows evidence that the formerly stigmatized reputation of the Québécois accented speaker has shifted towards a population that may be described as immigrants from some of the former French colonies or non-native speakers.

Annotation:
This descriptive, sociolinguistic study examines six middle grade children's perceptions and productions of English and French written narratives in a suburban Montreal English Protestant, French Immersion school in the province of Quebec during the period of one school year. The primary purpose of this study was to determine the children's perceptions of writing stories in English and French and strategies for writing stories in two languages and classrooms. Interviews were transcribed, coded for emerging patterns and interpreted as socially negotiated texts. A secondary purpose was to analyze their use of temporal perspectives, verb forms for self chosen English and French written stories. Descriptive statistics such as frequencies, means and percentages were utilized in data analysis. Major findings of this study were the following: (1) Across interviews in both English and French the children are very consistent in their perceptions of story writing in L2 as being more complex than in L1. (2) They perceive the writing of narrative in English and French to involve a culturally organized system of strategies and values learned in specific contexts of situations. (3) The use of varied interviewing techniques serves as a cross validation of children's perceptions. (4) The children have similar and systematic ways of assigning tense to their stories in both languages. (5) The children were exposed to contradictory models of language instruction and narrative discourse. The teachers' models of language learning, narrative discourse influenced the children's perceptions of themselves as language learners and story writers. (6) The six children provide evidence to support the hypothesis that there might be a single processing mechanism across languages that is flexible enough to handle differences among bilingual children in their perceptions of and use of strategies for writing stories in English and French. Findings from this study suggest that the relationship between first and second language learning is more similar than different. Direct teaching of linguistic forms can have a deleterious effect on children's written productions and perceptions of themselves as language learners. Large scale, product analysis studies, may no longer be a viable way to tap and assess the language, narrative competence and performance of bilingual children.

Annotation:
This dissertation investigates the parsing of filler-gap dependencies in French, more specifically those found in the restrictive relative construction. The primary goal of this research is to examine a question raised by Stowe (1984; 1986) concerning whether the parser has access to islandhood knowledge. Stowe's (1984;1986) results are compatible with the view that this type of grammatical information is readily accessible for the parser's initial analysis. However, her results are ambiguous since in her study, islandhood was confounded with subject position, where she failed to find gap-location effect. This study will examine the CNP-constraint in object position. A second goal is to examine whether the parsing mechanism postulates a gap in any potential position or only when the position is also a potential end of the sentence. Most of the experiments in the field use sentences where false gaps are located in a position which can correspond to a potential end of a sentence. Thus, the "surprise" effect attributed to false gap filling could also be attributed to the parsing mechanism finding that it did not reach the end of the sentence as expected. This dissertation provides evidence compatible with the view that island constraints, in this case the Complex NP constraint, are readily available to the parser; however, it also provides indications that the potential end of the sentence effect is a factor which has to be considered in identifying a gap location.

Issues of notation, musical and poetic form, prosody, rhythm, ornamentation, lute pitch and tuning, relationship to polyphonic versions, to the ballet de cour, to dance forms, and to solo instrumental styles such as stile brisé are examined. Early references to continuo practice and to the theorbo are noted. Several arguments are developed, including 1. that the sixteenth-century Le Roy publications were conceived primarily as solo lute music, 2. that from the late sixteenth-century onwards lute-songs were initially conceived as melody-bass outlines, and may to an extent be regarded as continuo realisations, and 3. that rhythmic features of the air de cour commonly related to the influence of musique mesurée may also be explained with reference to earlier attempts to adapt the voix de ville to humanist goals, and also to the influence of the Italian villanella. Includes tables and bibliographies. Musical examples, facsimiles, and transcriptions are included in a separate volume.

Annotation:
This dissertation describes the emergence and spread of the French reflexive anticausative and the consequences of the emergence and spread for the already existing unmarked anticausative. With respect to the first issue, I argue, based on a corpus study, that the French reflexive anticausative emerged in the 12th century. I further show that the mechanism of language change can not be determined empirically and that the emergence can be modelled with both reanalysis and analogical extension as the relevant mechanism. I further argue that the underspecification of the French reflexive construction is a necessary condition for this change. As regards the spread of the reflexive anticausative, I argue on the basis of a corpus study that the spread is a slow and presumably irregular process, that has not yet come to an end. The innovation continuously spreads on the level of the verbal lexicon. It does so in a parallel fashion in different semantic verb classes and it does not spread from one semantic verb class to another. Finally, the consequences of this change for the unmarked anticausative are discussed from the perspective of the semantic relation between French reflexive and unmarked anticausatives. Based on a corpus study, I argue that the two types of anticausatives differ with respect to their aspectual and causal properties, but that this difference is a tendency and not absolute

Annotation:
This dissertation entitled French for Refugee Service Providers, aims to provide a curriculum for teaching French as a Foreign Language to those working with French-speaking refugees in South Africa. Firstly, the context of the project is thoroughly discussed, which substantiates the importance of language for the integration of refugees into the host country. Specific attention is given to the South African situation. This study then provides a review of the literature outlining the most pertinent issues with regards to the domain of teaching French as a Foreign Language (TFFL) and French for Specific Purposes (FSP). Finally, the process as well as the results of a needs analysis conducted amongst a sample of people working with refugees in Durban, South Africa are presented in detail. Based on these results, a curriculum for teaching French to refugee service providers is suggested, together with examples of three lesson plans and two evaluation activities.

Provides an overview of work on the effects of Quebec French (QF) on Quebec English (QE) since 1977. Argues that the framework used by sociolinguists is too narrow methodologically, excluding conversations in English between people whose first languages are different and ignoring the deliberate use of language for political effect. Examines some cognate nouns to show how meanings in QE have shifted because of knowledge of QF.
