While there are plenty of people who decry the parents’ right push, viewing it as manufactured and mean-spirited, Frederick M. Hess and Michael Q. McShane think it has been a healthy and overdue development. Yet while parents have rights, they also have a responsibility to send students to school ready to learn. Schools are ultimately reliant on parents being active partners in preparing their children to be responsible students and citizens. With clear communication and a willingness to listen, families and schools can form more productive partnerships to help students learn.

For three decades beginning in 1868, Frederick Law Olmsted and his partners and successors created for Buffalo, the second largest city in New York State, a series of parks and parkways that attracted national and international attention. Olmsted's work for Buffalo occupied a prominent place in his influential career as park planner and urban reformer. In Buffalo, Olmsted and his partner Calvert Vaux implemented a comprehensive series of parks and parkways that pioneered the concept of the metropolitan recreational system. Initially conceived between 1868 and 1870 and substantially constructed by 1876, Olmsted and Vaux's Buffalo park system carefully modified the city's original plan, framed in 1804 by Joseph Ellicott, and introduced progressive design features inspired by the example of the Second Empire in Paris.

Background: Risky sexual behaviors such as sexual concurrency, sexual networks (fish for sex exchange) and unprotected sex, have been reported as the main cause of STIs/HIV infections among the fisher folks. Behavioural change mechanisms such as condom use, and abstinence are some of the interventions used in the prevention HIV/AIDS spread in Kenya. Methods: This was a follow up study on a three tie quasi-experimental study involving 246 randomly selected fisher folks in Mbita and Usenge along Lake Victoria. The study had three phases. baseline, intervention and endline. The survey used questionnaires to collect data among respondents. Using a sample frame in the beach management unit offices, fisherfolks were identified and invited to participate. Consent was obtained from participantsResults: Various variables were influenced by behavior change communication strategies used. These includes use of condom every time of sexual encounter p>0.000, risk associated with non-condom use p>0.004, stopping using condom and fear of getting HIV/AIDS p>0.009, Sexual intercourse without condom use is dangerous p>0.000, whether remembering to use condom every time of sex is difficult P.0.000, whether they are keeping many sexual partners p=0.004, receiving fish/money in exchange for sex in last six months p=0.006.Conclusions: Multiple sexual partners, non-condom use, fish for sex, alcohol consumption and circumcision were significantly associated with risky sexual behavior among the Fisherfolks, therefore other existing interventions need to be intensified to supplement behavior change communication to curb sexually transmitted diseases and further spread of HIV and AIDS.

Background Women in the fisher communities in coastal regions of Bangladesh are engaged in a wide range of fishery activities. However, there is limited evidence available on the occupational hazards and risks experienced by them. Method The study was conducted among fishing colonies in Cox’s Bazar and Chattogram districts in Bangladesh. This was a cross-sectional study blending qualitative and quantitative approaches. The qualitative component comprised five focus group discussions to understand the occupational context, hazards, and risks faced by the fisherwomen, informing the questionnaire design for the subsequent survey. The quantitative survey involved a sample of 207 women from fisher communities, gathering socio-demographic information, occupational hazards, risks, and health and safety practices. Findings The study found a high occurrence of occupational hazards, health risks and limited availability of preventive measures among the women in fisher communities. Occupational hazards include physical safety hazards such as slippery surfaces and fish cutting instruments, and physical hazards like prolonged sun exposure and noise. Chemical hazards like pesticides and saltwater, ergonomic hazards such as prolonged uncomfortable posture and heavy lifting, and biological hazards including inadequate sanitation facilities were prevalent. The study also identified the potential occupational risks, and the outcomes resulting from the hazards, including injuries (87.44%), musculoskeletal conditions (69.08%), skin diseases/conditions (56.52%), eye complaints (33.82%), severe respiratory distress (24.15%) and high incidence of self-reported communicable diseases. Most women (78.26%) did not use personal protective equipment, and the majority (93.72%) lacked a workplace first aid kit. Conclusion The study revealed a high prevalence of occupational hazards and health risks, including injuries and diseases, among Bangladeshi women in fisher communities with insufficient safety measures. Collaboration among government, NGOs, development partners, fisheries stakeholders, and the community is imperative for targeted training, innovative procedures, ergonomic solutions, provision of protective equipment, and advocacy to enhance the well-being of these women.

This paper aims to describe the conceptual model of informal business development applied to “Tibo-Tibo” fisherwomen in North Minahasa Regency. Data and information were obtained by observation and structured interviews to “Tibo-Tibo” fisherwomen, business partners and village governments. The data was analyzed qualitatively by using Miles Huberman perspective, through stages: data reduction, data presentation, conclusion drawing and verification. After going through the validity of experts, this paper produced a conceptual model of informal business development based on intellectual capital namely human capital, social capital and organizational capital. This paper recommends that through the intellectual capital approach "Tibo-Tibo" fisher women's business can be improved through empowerment. Empowerment in the form of human capital will increase the added value products with the availability of a variety of products for frozen food businesses and products for culinary businesses. Empowerment in the form of social capital will strengthen the values of relationships with business partners, trust to customers and employees and strengthen the work culture "mapalus" (local wisdom for the community) such as cooperation and helping each other. Empowerment in the form of organizational will strengthening the management and organizational professionalism as well as the acknowledgment of business license and product brands by consumers.

Abstract Background The transition to parenthood is a period of major stressors and increased risk of anxiety for all parents. Though rates of perinatal anxiety are similar among women (4%-25%) and men (3%-25%), perinatal anxiety research on nonbirthing partners remains limited. Objective We aimed to examine whether demographic characteristics or digital perinatal support preferences differed among nonbirthing partners with compared to without self-reported high parenthood-related anxiety. Methods In this large cross-sectional study of nonbirthing partners using a digital perinatal health platform during their partner’s pregnancy, users reported their parenthood-related anxiety through a 5-item Likert scale in response to the prompt “On a scale of 1=None to 5=Extremely, how anxious are you feeling about parenthood?” High parenthood-related anxiety was defined as reporting being very or extremely anxious about parenthood. During the onboarding survey, in response to the question “Which areas are you most interested in receiving support in?” users selected as many support interests as they desired from a list of options. Chi-square and Fisher exact tests were used to compare demographic characteristics and support interests of nonbirthing partners with low versus high parenthood anxiety. Logistic regression models estimated the odds ratios (ORs), with 95% CIs, of high parenthood-related anxiety with each user characteristic or digital support interest. Results Among 2756 nonbirthing partners enrolled in the digital platform during their partner’s pregnancy, 2483 (90.1%) were men, 1668 (71.9%) were first-time parents, 1159 (42.1%) were non-Hispanic White, and 1652 (50.9%) endorsed an annual household income of >US $100,000. Overall, 2505 (91.9%) reported some amount of parenthood-related anxiety, and 437 (15.9%) had high parenthood-related anxiety. High parenthood-related anxiety was more common among non-White nonbirthing partners: compared to those who identified as non-Hispanic White, those who identified as Asian, Black, or Hispanic had 2.39 (95% CI 1.85-3.08), 2.01 (95% CI 1.20-3.23), and 1.68 (95% CI 1.15-2.41) times the odds of high parenthood-related anxiety, respectively. Lower household income was associated with increased odds of reporting high parenthood anxiety, with the greatest effect among those with annual incomes of <US $50,000 compared to >US $100,000 (OR 2.13, 95% CI 1.32-3.34). In general, nonbirthing partners were interested in receiving digital support during their partner’s pregnancy, but those with high parenthood-related anxiety were more likely to desire digital support for all support interests compared to those without high parenthood anxiety. Those with high parenthood-related anxiety had more than 2 times higher odds of requesting digital education about their emotional health compared to those without high parenthood-related anxiety (OR 2.06, 95% CI 1.67-2.55). Conclusions These findings demonstrate the need for perinatal anxiety-related support for all nonbirthing partners and identify nonbirthing partners’ demographic characteristics that increase the odds of endorsing high parenthood-related anxiety. Additionally, these findings suggest that most nonbirthing partners using a digital health platform with high parenthood-related anxiety desire to receive perinatal mental health support.

The chapter details the success of the Hammer Dracula (Terence Fisher, 1958) in late-1950s and early-1960s Italy, and explains why, where, by whom and with which commercial results a series of vampire films were made by Italian companies from 1959 to 1975, with the cooperation of European co-production partners and/or American investors. While revealing the imported and derivative nature of 1956-1975 Italian vampire cinema, the industrial analysis conducted in the chapter shows how local factors such as distribution-fed production, time- and cost-saving shooting practices, state censorship and state aids made the Italian vampire rip-offs into variations on the theme mixing foreign models with distinctively national traits rather than into slavish plagiarisms.

This chapter describes the development of Central Park. In 1857, Frederick Law Olmsted was hired as the park’s new superintendent. He explored the land and organized the workers, and his efforts suitably impressed the commissioners. By this point, architect Calvert Vaux's agitation for a new design for the park had worked, and on October 13, the commissioners announced a public competition and called for proposals. This was the first significant landscape competition in the country. Olmsted and Vaux formed a partnership and set out to create a beautiful, harmonious park. They titled their proposal the “Greensward Plan,” since it contained large grass-covered areas. There were 33 submissions, and the partners were awarded first prize. With Vaux and Olmsted now in charge, work got underway, and ultimately, Central Park became the nation's biggest public works project.

The very decision to create a ballet based on one of the world’s most popular operettas, with its rich heritage of revivals worldwide, was daring and innovative. The project would present formidable legal hurdles. Negotiating the rights to adapt Franz Lehár’s Merry Widow entailed navigation of a complex maze of correspondence, legal documents, and even lawsuits involving heirs and rights-holders from Vienna and Berlin to Paris, London, and New York. Fortunately, Page’s attorney-agent-advocate, husband Thomas Hart Fisher, was ideally suited in temperament and well equipped for such challenges. This chapter explores the creative, collaborative processes involved in several iterations of Page’s ballet, including Vilia, the 1953 version produced by Anton Dolin’s London Festival Ballet; Merry Widow, the 1955 version starring Alicia Markova, produced on Broadway; and an excerpt performed by the Chicago Opera Ballet on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1958. The argument is made that the ballet’s women-centered narrative and power-sharing model of marriage—between a rich widow and a charming ambassadorial attaché, whose marital union guarantees the prosperity of a nation—reflected Page and Fisher’s own marriage of equal partners dedicated to a common purpose. These life partners devised a sure-fire ballet, guaranteed to succeed because of its near-perfect interplay of theatrical elements: music, design, choreography, lighting, and technical wizardry. Importantly, their brand of ballet theatre offered an alternative to the dominant model of neoclassicism in the American ballet. A populist paradigm, it sought to make ballet an everyday need: art as good entertainment, glamorous but accessible.

Abstract Charles Darwin identified two basic forms of sexual selection: intrasexual selection, in which members of the same sex of a species evolved biobehavioral mechanisms to compete with one another to win mating opportunities with the opposite sex—male–male competition and female–female competition—and intersexual selection in which members of each sex of a species evolved biobehavioral mechanisms to attract members of the opposite sex for the purpose of mating—mate choice. Miller proposed that two aspects of mate choice have evolved in tandem: (1) traits of the display producer that evolved to attract mating partners and (2) traits of the display chooser that evolved to discriminate between specific courtship displays and prefer those of specific display producers. Fisher has proposed that a third mechanism evolved in tandem with hominin mate choice: the brain system for romantic love. Regardless of whom the display chooser chooses, this corresponding neural mechanism provides the focus, motivation, optimism, and energy to pursue this preferred mating partner. This chapter first reviews current data on this mechanism of mate choice, romantic love. Then, using a sample of 39,913 single adult Americans, the chapter discusses four broad temperament dimensions that play a role in mate choice today; and using a sample of 28,128 single Americans, it discusses three biologically based patterns of mate choice associated with these four neural systems. Last, using a national representative sample of 55,000 single adult Americans, the chapter discusses contemporary patterns of mate choice that most likely evolved during hominin evolution.
