AbstractIt has been widely claimed that Kanji is one of the most difficult aspects of Japanese language learning for learners with alphabetic language backgrounds. There are various techniques devised by teachers to teach Kanji effectively. However, given variables such as individual differences, none of these techniques can be a single perfect technique. In this paper, how learners process Kanji is analysed, then based on the findings of the analysis, techniques for teaching Kanji are classified into four categories for developing learners’ proper processing skills. The four categories are: 1) techniques to eliminate learners’ anxiety, 2) techniques to familiarise learners with Kanji, 3) techniques to store Kanji in long-term memory, and 4) techniques to restructure learners’ schema. The paper suggests 1) that learners need to have appropriate graphemic awareness to process Kanji, and 2) that techniques from each category should be implemented in teaching to facilitate the development of proper processing skills.

Most diagnostic ultrasonic imaging systems perform fixed focusing on transmit and dynamic focusing on receive. Such systems suffer from image quality degradation at depths away from the transmit focal zone. Several dynamic transmit focusing techniques have been previously investigated. Among them, a filter-based, retrospective focusing technique was proposed to increase the length of the transmit focal zone. In this paper, the filter-based technique is extended from dynamic receive focusing to fixed receive focusing. It is shown that the filtering technique with fixed receive focusing can achieve an image quality similar to that of dynamic receive focusing with filtering. The performance of the proposed approach is verified using real ultrasound data. It is shown that the proposed approach with fixed receive focusing requires a longer filter than that with dynamic receive focusing. Nonetheless, system complexity is greatly reduced with synthetic transmit and receive focusing because the dynamic receive focusing circuit is no longer needed.

The successful use is reported of a particle-swarm optimization algorithm to design a focusing, multi-channel neutron guide for the measurement of millimetre- and sub-millimetre-sized samples. For a 5 Å incident neutron wavelength on an IN5-type instrument, this results in a ninefold gain in the peak neutron count rate, and around an eightfold average gain in the count rate over the crucial 3–6 Å wavelength range, averaged over a 2 × 2 mm sample. A particle swarm method and a genetic algorithm were compared for simple neutron flux maximization, and the particle swarm was found to be faster for these kinds of problems. The focusing device was then designed by coupling the particle swarm algorithm to a full Monte Carlo neutron ray-tracing system. This realizes the `holy grail' of autonomous, self-optimizing virtual neutron devices based on life processes. The end result is superior to the manual (human) design of a focusing guide, and the design can be entirely re-optimized within a few days if the design requirements for a specific instrument should change.

In this work, we analyze the effect of predistortion techniques on the focusing profile of Fresnel Zone Plates (FZPs) in ultrasound applications. This novel predistortion method is based on either increasing or decreasing the width of some of the FZP Fresnel rings by a certain amount. We investigate how the magnitude of the predistortion, as well as the number and location of the predistorted rings, influences the lens focusing profile. This focusing profile can be affected in different ways depending on the area of the lens where the predistortion is applied. It is shown that when the inner area of the lens, closer to its center, is predistorted, this technique allows the control of the focal depth at the main focus. However, when the predistortion is applied to an area farther from the center of the lens, the acoustic intensity distribution among the main focus and the closest adjacent secondary foci can be tailored at a certain degree. This predistortion technique shows great potential and can be used to control, modify and shape the FZP focusing profile in both industrial and therapeutic applications.

Prestack depth migration still suffers from the problems associated with building appropriate velocity models. The two main after‐migration, before‐stack velocity analysis techniques currently used, depth focusing and residual moveout correction, have found good use in many applications but have also shown their limitations in the case of very complex structures. To address this issue, we have extended the residual moveout analysis technique to the general case of heterogeneous velocity fields and steep dips, while keeping the algorithm robust enough to be of practical use on real data. Our method is not based on analytic expressions for the moveouts and requires no a priori knowledge of the model, but instead uses geometrical ray tracing in heterogeneous media, layer‐stripping migration, and local wavefront analysis to compute residual velocity corrections. These corrections are back projected into the velocity model along raypaths in a way that is similar to tomographic reconstruction. While this approach is more general than existing migration velocity analysis implementations, it is also much more computer intensive and is best used locally around a particularly complex structure. We demonstrate the technique using synthetic data from a model with strong velocity gradients and then apply it to a marine data set to improve the positioning of a major fault.

Several intriguing questions were raised during my presentation on Mental readiness and pediatric neurosurgery at the Brazil Society for Pediatric Neurosurgery (BSPN) Scientific Meeting–Webinar on April 15, 2020. Does arrogance disturb mental readiness techniques? Can mindfulness techniques improve surgical readiness? Can simulation models improve mindfulness? How do you stay focused on routine procedures you’ve done 800 times? The University of Ottawa (Canada)—where I am a research scientist in at the McLaughlin Centre for Population Health Risk Assessment in the Faculty of Medicine—has conducted extensive studies on a new discipline called operational readiness. It correlates research with the performances of Olympic athletes and people in high-risk occupations, like surgeons, air traffic controllers and police, whose standards of excellence have life-and-death consequences. So, what can we learn from the best in these fields? Plenty. Our ongoing work makes it clear that effective focusing practices impact one’s performance. But, it is not always easy to “be there for the task-at-hand with all your attention on the right things for the duration of the event without distracting thoughts.” Here are five focusing techniques used by elite surgeons and other peak performers compiled by researchers at the University of Ottawa.

Ultrasonic phased array inspection has been paid a great attention in ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation since it can provide a benefit of focusing and/or steering ultrasonic beams. A time reversal technique is claimed to be very robust to focus beams through inhomogeneous media, using the phased array transducers. In this paper, the performance and limitations of a D.O.R.T. method, which is one of the time reversal techniques, is considered based on the experimental studies. In addition, a variation of the D.O.R.T, namely a pre-focused D.O.R.T., is proposed in order to overcome the limitations of the current D.O.R.T. method. The results of the newly proposed method are compared to those obtained by conventional focusing methods.

The inspection of austenitic and dissimilar welds using ultrasound demands for sophisticated testing techniques. The application of reconstruction methods like the Synthetic Aperture Focusing Technique (SAFT) on the measurement results provides an appropriate approach for defect characterization and sizing. Nevertheless, the reconstruction algorithm has to consider the aniso-tropic wave propagation inside the inhomogeneous weld material. In recent years the detection of transverse cracks has become increasingly important for ensuring the structural integrity of pipes in the primary circuit of nuclear power plants or longitudinally welded, cladded pipes. However, relia-ble inspection techniques are hardly available. In this particular case, it is expected that the compar-atively long propagation path of the ultrasonic wave field inside the inhomogeneous weld material enhances the effect of anisotropy and influences the accuracy and the signal-to-noise-ratio of the reconstruction result. In this contribution we suggest an advanced ultrasonic testing technique for detecting and sizing of transversal cracks in austenitic and dissimilar welds. The method applies a SAFT reconstruction algorithm considering the anisotropy and the inhomogeneity. A V-arrangement of the transducers in pitch-catch technique is chosen to avoid a direct coupling on the weld face. The reconstruction algo-rithm is based on an extended 3-dimensional weld model and uses a ray-tracing approach for de-termining the wave propagation paths. Along with the reconstruction algorithm the transducer set-up and experimental results of different specimens with artificial transverse flaws are presented. The availability of the proposed method for crack sizing is assessed in comparison to conventional testing techniques.

The article presents the basics of imputation methodology (including the methodology of multiple imputation), focusing on understanding its mathematical background. We analyze the situation when observations in the original sample are independent random variables with identical distributions, and response or its lack is modeled by a random mechanism which is independent of observations. In particular, we point out to problems that arise when the standard Rubin estimate of the multiple imputation variance estimator is used. A possible improvement of this popular estimator is indicated. The starting point of the analysis is when the appearance of response deficiencies is caused by a deterministic mechanism.

One of the challenging problems in non-destructive evaluation is related to identification and sizing of flaws. A high resolution image of the scanned part is required. This allows, through using adequate post-processing of data, to perform localisation and sizing of a flaw. Several techniques have been introduced recently for this purpose. These include among others the synthetic aperture focusing technique, inverse wave-field extrapolation and the total focusing method. However, large uncertainties are affecting the inverse problem solution as provided by these methods when dealing with small defects. It was recognized that reconstruction based on the ultrasonic synthetic aperture focusing technique elaborated in frequency domain provides high resolution imaging even at large distances. This work focused on this promising procedure for the special case of ultrasonic imaging of flaws in 2D elastic medium under plane strain conditions, where the image is provided by a B-scan. Robustness of detection was investigated through perturbing the radargram by white noise and assessed as function of noise energy. It was found that synthetic aperture focusing technique is insensitive to noise.

In the development of low-cost and lightweight SAR sensors, to be used in several application fields, the precise mission parameters and the knowledge of all the specific geometric and radiometric information about the sensor might complicate the hardware and software requirements. Despite SAR data processing being a well-established imaging technique, the proposed algorithm aims to exploit the SAR coherent illumination, demonstrating the possibility of extracting the reference functions, both in range and azimuth directions, when a strong point scatterer (either natural or manmade) is present in the scene. The Singular Value Decomposition is used to exploit the inherent redundancy present in the raw data matrix, and phase unwrapping and polynomial fitting are used to reconstruct clean versions of the reference functions. Fairly focused images on both synthetic and real raw data matrices without the knowledge of mission parameters and ancillary data information can be obtained; as a byproduct, azimuth beam pattern and estimates of a few other parameters have been extracted from the raw data itself. In a previous paper, authors introduced a preliminary work dealing with this problem and able to obtain good-quality images, if compared to the standard processing techniques. In this work, the proposed technique is described, and performance parameters are extracted to compare the proposed approach to RD, showing good adherence of the focused images and pulse responses.
