The turbulent shocks of recent decades—man-made and natural disasters, political instability, pandemics, and military conflicts—highlight the need for psychosocial support for victims. To plan and train those who can provide it, a number of guidelines have been developed at the global and national levels, within international medical organizations that can minimize the impact of the crisis and start the recovery process. The article presents the definition of the concept of Psychological First Aid (PFA), describes the key aspects, structure, time limits, and principles of activity; a description of three leading models of first psychological assistance in the context of international medical organizations: the World Health Organization (WHO), Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières, MSF), and the Johns Hopkins Center for Public Health Preparedness, USA. The RAPID model of first aid and key competencies for psychosocial workers involved in helping victims are described. The principles and techniques of PFA meet four basic standards: they are based on the results of research of risks and resilience after injury; they are practical and suitable for use in the “field”; they meet the age characteristics of development; they take into account cultural differences. The chronogram of mental reactions to a stressful event and the provision of PFA to victims within international medical organizations is divided into four phases which should be taken into account in the organization of psychosocial support. The RAPID model is based on five aspects designed to alleviate acute stress: Rapport and Reflective listening; Assessment of needs; Prioritization; Intervention; Disposition. If control over bodily reactions, emotions, and thoughts in the victims are restored, the narrative of the event is completed and accompanied by appropriate reactions, emotions are accepted, self-esteem and self-confidence are restored, and a sense of the future appears, we can say that the person has successfully adapted to the traumatic event and is ready to move on.

The purpose of this study was to investigate how school principals understand HIV/AIDS and how their knowledge, attitude and interpretation filter in the implementation of the HIV policy in schools. The study comprises a literature review and empirical investigation. The results of this study can be used in planning and implementing HIV policy in schools. The data were collected by administering semi-structured interviews. Ten school principals from the Dennilton circuit in Southern Region of the Limpopo Province were interviewed. The results show that the majority of the principals involved in the study confirm that HIV/AIDS is an incurable disease caused by a virus and is mainly sexually transmitted. Some principals regard their school safe from HIV infection. Their assumption is based on the absence of HIV positive learners and educators in their schools. The principals are aware of the rights of HIV positive learners and educators. Significantly, the research findings indicate that the majority of schools lack educators with HIV/AIDS training, rules on safety precautions and first aid kits. It is recommended that ongoing HIV/AIDS training programmes be provided for educators to enable them to educate the youth on HIV/AIDS. Additionally, schools should focus on strategies to implement universal safety precautions against HIV transmission and to obtain first aid kits. Lastly, school principals should involve parents and other stakeholders in creating a positive school environment for HIV positive learners and educators.

Abstract Session types provide a principled programming discipline for structured interactions. They represent a wide spectrum of type-systems for concurrency. Their type safety is thus extremely important. EMTST is a tool to aid in representing and validating theorems about session types in the Coq proof assistant. On paper, these proofs are often tricky, and error prone. In proof assistants, they are typically long and difficult to prove. In this work, we propose a library that helps validate the theory of session types calculi in proof assistants. As a case study, we study two of the most used binary session types systems: we show the impossibility of representing the first system in $$\alpha $$-equivalent representations, and we prove type preservation for the revisited system. We develop our tool in the Coq proof assistant, using locally nameless for binders and small scale reflection to simplify the handling of linear typing environments.

The development process is a key aspect of ultimate product success. The front-end of the development activity is the foundation for building new products by first gathering customers’ needs, identifying the company’s goals, and assessing the competitive landscape. By doing so, this crucial activity directly impacts eventual development cost, which includes engineering resources, manufacturing, etc. In this paper, we study a specific design approach, namely, product family design, which allows companies to increase revenue by developing an entire family of products targeting different market segments while reducing lead-time and manufacturing costs. However, there is a significant amount of risk given the costs of developing complex shared architectures, and there are many examples from industry where product families have failed. Thus, the development stage is critical, and a well-structured development strategy can bring success while a poor one can cause significant problems during product launch, as recent case studies illustrate. In this platform-based study, we assess two drivers of this product family design: (1) a platform-driven strategy and (2) a product-driven strategy. Three facets are examined: the product, the company, and the competition. The goal is to recommend a planning framework to aid companies in selecting the right process considering their product, strategy, and environment.

The field of wearable hydraulics for human-assistive devices is expanding. One of the major challenges facing development of these systems is creating lightweight, portable power units. This project’s goal was to develop design strategies and guidelines with the use of analytical modeling to minimize the weight of portable hydraulic power supplies in the range of 50–300 W. Steady-state, analytical models were developed and validated for a system containing a lithium-polymer battery, brushless DC motor, and axial-piston pump. Component parameters such as motor size, pump size, and swashplate angle were varied to explore and develop four main design guidelines that can be used by designers to minimize overall system weight. First, it is often not beneficial to select the smallest sized electric motor that can provide the required torque and speed. Second, cooling systems generally do not help reduce overall system weight. Third, the gearbox between the electric motor and pump should be eliminated to reduce system weight. Fourth, iterative modeling is necessary to determine the various range of particular component parameters necessary to result in a minimal-weight system. The analytical model developed takes inputs of desired flowrate, pressure, and runtime, and outputs the combination of pump size, swashplate angle, and motor size that results in a minimal-weight system. The four design principles and the computer simulation are tools that can be used to either design a fully custom, weight-optimized power supply or to aid in the selection of commercially available components for a low-weight power supply.

Various Dutch operators have identified a need for increased application of deliquification measures in their North Sea wells. To help meet this need a Joint Industry Project (JIP) was set up to identify knowledge and experience gained in the United States on gas well deliquification and transfer this to European wells. In the first phase of the project a broad overview of the techniques used to deliquify gas wells suffering from liquid loading was made together with a set of available guidelines predicting the range of application. Having identified potential techniques, a selection tool was developed which suggests the most suitable deliquification technique for a given well. The selection tool can predict the gains in production and ultimate recovery resulting from applying a range of techniques. The selection tool is based on Tubing Performance Curve (TPC) analysis combined with Inflow Performance Relationship (IPR) analysis; performance therefore depends on the pressure drop over the wellbore (as modelled in the TPC) and on reservoir characteristics. For each of these techniques, a model was available or developed to simplify their operating principles to a TPC. Results from this tool can aid in deciding which deliquification technique to implement, as it gives a clear overview of the production gain that can be expected for the different techniques [8].

Abstract The phenomenon of higher than expected production rates and recovery factors in heavy oil reservoirs captured the term "foamy oil," by researchers. This is mainly due to the bubble filled chocolate mousse appearance found at wellheads where this phenomenon occurs. Foamy oil flow is barely understood up to this day. Understanding why this unusual occurrence exists can aid in the transfer of principles to low recovery heavy oil reservoirs globally. This study focused mainly on how varying the viscosity and temperature via pressure depletion lab tests affected the performance of foamy oil production. Six different lab-scaled experiments were conducted, four with varying temperatures and two with varying viscosities. All experiments were conducted using lab-scaled sand pack pressure depletion tests with the same initial gas oil ratio (GOR). The first series of experiments with varying temperatures showed that the oil recovery was inversely proportional to elevated temperatures, however there was a directly proportional relationship between gas recovery and elevation in temperature. A unique observation was also made, during late-stage production, foamy oil recovery reappeared with temperatures in the 45-55°C range. With respect to the viscosities, a non-linear relationship existed, however there was an optimal region in which the live-oil viscosity and foamy oil production seem to be harmonious.

Abstract Through experience, designers develop guiding principles, or heuristics, to aid decision-making in familiar design domains. Generalized versions of common design heuristics have been identified across multiple domains and applied by novices to design problems. Previous work leveraged a sample of these common heuristics to assist in an agent-based design process, which typically lacks heuristics. These predefined heuristics were translated into sequences of specifically applied design changes that followed the theme of the heuristic. To overcome the upfront burden, need for human interpretation, and lack of generality of this manual process, this paper presents a methodology that induces frequent heuristic sequences from an existing timeseries design change dataset. Individual induced sequences are then algorithmically grouped based on similarity to form groups that each represent a shared general heuristic. The heuristic induction methodology is applied to data from two human design studies in different design domains. The first dataset, collected from a truss design task, finds a highly similar set of general heuristics used by human designers to that which was hand selected for the previous computational agent study. The second dataset, collected from a cooling system design problem, demonstrates further applicability and generality of the heuristic induction process. Through this heuristic induction technique, designers working in a specified domain can learn from others’ prior problem-solving strategies and use these strategies in their own future design problems.

Kinetic analysis is essential for chemical reactor modeling. This study proposes a methodology to use available kinetic analysis methodologies, including conventional (modelistic) graphical representation, isoconversional (model free), models based on first principles and reduced time scale analysis (Sharp and Hancock procedure) to predict the kinetics of an investigated reaction. Even though these methods have some limitations, a methodology comprised of combining their results can help in determining the kinetic parameters for reaction. The isoconversional approach can be used to determine the activation energy without the need of using a reaction model. The modelistic graphical representation can aid is determining the group (i.e. diffusion, first order, phase boundary or nucleation) to which the reaction generally belongs. The reduced time scale analysis can guide in isolating the reaction kinetics in the early stages of the reaction when the conversion ranges between 0.15 and 0.5. This proposed methodology uses the various methods and applies them to experimental data for high temperature reactions in fluidized bed reactors. Particular attention is given to steam driven iron oxidation kinetics for hydrogen production. When only the modelistic approach is used, the activation energy computed using the selected models varies from 59–183 kJ/mol, depending on the model used. However, by combining the predictive capabilities of various approaches discussed in this study, the activation energy range narrows to 80–147 kJ/mol. It is also shown that the iron oxidation with steam under the studied conditions can be described by a combination of two models. The early stage of the reaction is represented by either a contracting volume or first order model. Later stages of reaction can be described by either a contracting volume, first order or 3-D diffusion model. In addition, when analyzing reaction kinetics using a fundamental approach, it is observed that the fluidized bed oxidation reaction of iron with pure steam can be best represented by a combination of two mechanisms, namely shrinking sphere surface area and diffusion controlled mechanisms and the estimated activation energy is 103 kJ/mol.

Many modern ships, particularly large containerships, are characterized by extreme bow flare, large stern overhang, and low torsional rigidity due to an open deck structural configuration. Software package GL ShipLoad was developed as an aid to assess the structural integrity of such ships. This software tool became the standard method to generate rule based loads for a global strength finite element analysis of sea going displacement ships. It efficiently generates loads based on first principles. A graphical user interface facilitates the convenient application of ship and cargo masses to the finite element model and aids in the selection of relevant design wave situations. User defined selection criteria, such as maximum values of rule based bending moments, shear forces, or torsional moments, specify which waves have to be chosen for the global strength analysis. This approach yields a reduced number of balanced load cases that are sufficient to dimension the hull structure. To adequately simulate roll motion, additional roll angles are analyzed that simulate realistic distributions of torsional moments over the ship length. A strength analysis of a typical post-panamax containership demonstrated the load generation procedure. First, efficiently modeled mass items were grouped into reusable assembled masses for the ship at hydrostatic equilibrium. Second, regular design wave scenarios were estimated, and hydrodynamic pressures for a large number of regular waves were computed. Third, a reduced number of relevant wave situations were automatically selected, and balanced hydrostatic, hydrodynamic, and inertia loads were applied to the finite element model. Enforced roll angles were found to contribute significantly to the initial torsional moment in the fore holds. Finally, based on a locally refined FE submodel of the hatch corners in way of the ship’s fore hold, a fatigue analysis was performed to assess effects of critical loading under enforced roll angles.

Filiform hairs of crickets are of great interest to engineers because of their highly sensitive response to low velocity air currents. In this study, the cercal sensory system of a common house cricket has been analyzed. The sensory system consists of two antennae like appendages called cerci that are situated at the rear of the cricket’s abdomen. Each cercus is covered with 500–750 flow sensitive hairs that are embedded in a complex viscoelastic socket that acts as a spring -dashpot system and guides the movement of the hair. When the hair deflects due to the drag force induced on its length by a moving air-current, the spiking activity of the neuron and the combined spiking activity of all hairs are extracted by the cercal sensory system. The hair has been experimentally studied by few researchers though its characteristics are not fully understood. The socket structure has not been analyzed experimentally or theoretically from a mechanical standpoint. Therefore, this study aims to understand the dynamic response of socket and its interaction with the filiform hair. First, a 3D Finite Element Analysis (FEA) model, representing hair and hair-socket, has been developed. Then the dynamic analysis is conducted utilizing the appropriate load and boundary conditions based on the physical conditions that an insect experiences. These numerical analyses aid to understand the dynamic response of the hair and hair-socket system. The operating principles of the hair and hair-socket could be used for the design of highly responsive MEMS devices such as fluid flow sensors or micro-manipulators.

Experience has shown that buildings on average may consume 20% more energy than required for occupant comfort which by one estimate leads to $18 billion wasted annually on energy costs in commercial buildings in the United States. Experience and large scale studies of the benefits of commissioning have shown the effectiveness of these services in improving the energy efficiency of commercial buildings. While commissioning services do help reduce energy consumption and improve performance of buildings, the benefits of the commissioning tend to degrade over time. In order to prolong the benefits of commissioning, a prototype fault detection and diagnostic (FDD) tool intended to aid in reducing excess energy consumption known as an Automated Building Commissioning Analysis Tool (ABCAT) has been developed. ABCAT is a first principles based whole building level top down FDD tool which does not require the level of expertise and money often associated with more detailed component level methods. The model based ABCAT tool uses the ASHRAE Simplified Energy Analysis Procedure (SEAP) which requires a smaller number of inputs than more sophisticated simulation methods such as EnergyPlus or DOE-2. ABCAT utilizes a calibrated mathematical model, white box method, to predict energy consumption for given weather conditions. A detailed description of the methodology is presented along with test application results from more than 20 building years worth of retrospective applications and greater than five building years worth of live test case applications. In this testing, the ABCAT tool was used to successfully identify 24 significant energy consumption deviations in five retrospective applications and five significant energy consumption deviations in four live applications.
