Women exert only a modicum of production power in 21st century cinema despite its growing accessibility and spectatorship through the developing technologies of the digital era. In 2007, of the top 250 grossing films in Hollywood, only 10% were written, and 6% directed, by women, and just 16% contained leading female protagonists. Why, after the gains of the film feminist movement, is there such a significant gender imbalance in mainstream film, and an imbalance that is only increasing over time? More significantly, what are the possibilities and limitations for reel woman’s subjectivity and agency, in and on screen, in this male-dominated landscape? As a female filmmaker in this current climate I conduct an autoethnographical scriptwriting-based investigation into female subjectivity and agency, by writing the feature length screenplay Float, which is both the dramatic experiment and the creative outcome of this research. The exegesis works symbiotically with my scriptwriting journey by outlining the broader contexts surrounding women filmmakers and their female representations. In this self-reflexive examination, I use an interdisciplinary methodology to unravel the overt and latent sites of resistance for reel woman today on three interdependent levels. These comprise the historical, political and philosophical background to woman’s treatment both behind, and in front of, the camera; my lived experiences as an emerging writer/director as I write Float; and my representation of the screenplay’s central female character. I use the multiple logic of screenplay diegesis to explore the issues that have a bearing on women’s ability to be active agents in the world they inhabit, including: the dichotomising of female desire, the influence of familial history, the repression of the mother, the dominance of the male gaze, the disavowal of female specificity, and women’s consequent dislocation from their self-determined desire. These obstacles are simultaneously negotiated as I map my process of writing Float and deal with the challenging contexts in which the screenplay was created. In the course of my scriptwriting investigation, film feminist and French poststructuralist paradigms are considered and negotiated as I experiment whether it is possible for female filmmakers, and their female characters, to overcome the seemingly insurmountable odds facing women’s actualisation today. My research brings to light the critical need for more inclusive modes of practice across the film industry, discourse and pedagogy that are cognisant and respectful of reel women’s difference, and allow them to explore their own specificity. The thesis argues that it would be advantageous for female filmmakers to challenge their ‘fixed’ status in phallocentric discourse, and to deconstruct their patriarchal conditioning through engagement with forms of identity and writing resistance that recognise the fluidity of their subjectivity, and the consequent potential for change. I also highlight the importance of an accessible and affirmative feminist cinema pertinent to the 21st century, to integrate feminist ideals into the mainstream, and finally bring reel woman out of the margins.

A protocol of establishing radiochromic film based reference dosimetry for high dose rate Ir-192 brachytherapy source was assessed and described. A comparison between calibration curves created in water and Solid Water are provided. Solid Water was shown to be a viable alternative to water in establishing calibration curve for Ir-192 radiation beam. A Monte Carlo correction factor was calculated to convert the dose to water into dose to Solid Water and the experimental methods that we performed agreed with the Monte Carlo results where the ratio (DSW/DW)Ir-192 was found to be 0.9808 ± 0.14% (1σ). EBT-2 GAFCHROMIC film model was also investigated for absorption properties and found to be a less sensitive than its predecessor (EBT-1) in terms of net change of absorbance, but that did not affect the dosimetric value that this film possesses. A dose error assessment method has been described for EBT-2 film model (and is applicable to other types as well) that can establish the time error constraints on the post-irradiation scanning time that will still provide an acceptable dose error for clinical applications if the protocol employing the shorter post-irradiation scanning time is implemented in the clinic. We show that for two post-irradiation scanning times of 30 minutes and 24 hours the 1% dose error can be granted if the scanning time window is less than ± 5 minutes and ± 2 hours, respectively. Performance of EBT-2 model was also evaluated in water and it was concluded that a suggested correction protocol is necessary for immersion times that exceed 2 hours. This correction was tested with the calibration curve created from water setup and found to be effective when compared to the dose-corrected calibration curve in Solid Water.
Un protocole d'établir film radiochromique dosimétrie de référence en fonction de débit de dose élevé source Ir-192 curiethérapie été évalués et décrits. ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This dissertation is supplementing a documentary film entitled Captor and Captive – the story of Danger Ashipala and Johan van der Mescht (2010), referred to as Captor and Captive, with a duration of 52-minutes. The film follows the story of two soldiers caught up in the disorganized machine of war. Johan van der Mescht, a South African Defence Force (SADF) soldier was captured in 1978 by Danger Ashipala, a South West Africa People’s Organisation (SWAPO) guerilla fighting for Namibian independence. Van der Mescht was held as a prisoner of war (POW) in Angola before being exchanged for a Russian spy, Aleksei Koslov, at Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin in 1982. The main focus of the dissertation is to provide an analysis of representing history through film, with reference to Captor and Captive. It explores the manner in which history can be represented through the medium of film and add value to historical text, as well as historical text adding value to film, and how the two mediums can supplement each other. In this instance, Captor and Captive was produced first and the research conducted was used to inform the dissertation. It briefly discusses the history of documentary film within South Africa; the reality of producing documentary films reflecting on Captor and Captive and the theoretical principles involved in the craft of documentary filmmaking. The dissertation further provides details of the capture of Van der Mescht and his experience as a POW in Angola, against the backdrop of the Border War that waged between 1966 and 1989 in South West Africa (SWA) and Angola. The political landscape and various forces at work within southern Africa during the period of Van der Mescht’s capture are discussed. It also provides detail of the role of Van der Mescht’s captor Ashipala, and the liberation movement SWAPO. With independence in 1990, South West Africa became Namibia and will be referred to as such for the purpose of the dissertation. Mention will be made of other POWs during the Border War, providing a brief comparative analysis of their respective experiences.

This thesis consists of a text and a videotape, entitled Pull Ourselves Up or Die Out. The written thesis is an examination of the tradition of documentary film making with particular reference to notions of Realism, particularly as revealed in the ethnographic films made by John Marshall. The Marshall material spans a period from 1951 to the present day and relates the changes that the !Kung Bushman of Namibia have been forced to undergo. The material is unique and this thesis elaborates on the conditions and influences that have determined the film maker's strongly personal approach. The videotape that accompanies this thesis is 3/4 inch U-Matic, 25 minutes long, color, sound and. in English, Afrikaans and Ju/Wasi languages.

In this project a new type of metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) sensor for biosensing was investigated. With the use of a porous gold film as aninternal reference electrode, measurements of pH were performed in liquid. This new approach for liquid measurements demands new methods andstudies to increase the conductivity and adhesion in liquid of the porous gold film. The films have been deposited, either by sputtering orevaporation. Extensive studies included the investigation of depositions parameters on film structure and investigating the film morphology. Thesurface structure was studied with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). pH measurements were preformed with promising results. The adhesionof the electrode was greatly improved by using grains of titanium underneath the gold film. This new approach could lead to new applications anddevices for MOS sensors and its sensor relatives.

While documentary films featuring indigenous people have a long history and include ethnographic films made under educational or scientific auspices, many films about indigenous people have been prone to projection by filmmakers, particularly those with little in depth knowledge of their film subjects. People labeled ‘Bushmen’ have, more than any other indigenous people, been portrayed in documentaries in ways which relate more to the fantasies of the filmmaker and those of his or her culture than to the people at the other end of the camera. In order to investigate this problem, this dissertation employs both an audio-visual component and a written exegesis. The latter considers the problem by examining the evolution of the work of iconic ethnographic filmmaker, John Marshall who, during fifty years of filming the Ju/’hoansi (a.k.a. Kalahari Bushmen), tirelessly invented creative solutions to reduce his own projections and present more truthful and accurate representations of the people in his films. This exegesis introduces issues of projection and archetype in documentary and discusses historical examples of the ‘Bushman myth’ in documentary before analyzing the evolution of Marshall’s filmmaking career in the Kalahari and his efforts to counter the myth. Throughout the exegesis reference is made to the impact of Marshall’s ideas and philosophy of flmmaking on my own practice.

The repressive political conditions of the New Order state and the social dislocation caused by rapid industrial and technological development unquestionably affected the nature of artistic and cultural production in Indonesia. This thesis considers the dynamic of these conditions within a focused long-term study of the art and life of Indonesian "Surealis" painter, Lucia Hartini. My doctoral dissertation comprises this thesis and the forty-two minute documentary film Perbatasan / Boundaries: Lucia Hartini, Paintings from a Life (1999 – 2002) which I filmed in Indonesia and presents Lucia Hartini and her art in the context of her times from the historical standpoint of Reformasi and millennial change. Art historically, this thesis informs us of a wider journey, that of selected twentieth century Indonesian contemporary artists exploring concepts of simulacra, hyper-reality, the meta-real and the surreal through the stylistic use of photo-realism. Lucia Hartini is known for her "Beautiful Surrealism". A founding member of the "Surealis Yogya", formed in 1985, she was the only woman from the original group to continue painting professionally from the late 1970s, throughout the New Order, and into the era of Reform. The consideration of Lucia Hartini's work in this thesis acknowledges the gradual shift in her concerns. Lucia's paintings respond to her natural and social environment, as well as to the challenges and dramatic changes in her life. This thesis charts the journey of her artistic maturation, so richly embodied in her third solo exhibition, "Irama Kehidupan / The Spirit of Life", in January 2002. Through a critical commentary on paintings selected from her oeuvre and the textual analysis of Perbatasan / Boundaries, I discuss Lucia Hartini’s subject matter, unique systems of image formation and use of detail, her particular contribution to the characteristic qualities of Indonesian "Surealisme". I regard the techniques, conceptual approaches and processes of filmmaking as intrinsic to this exploration, a methodological perspective arising from Hendro Wiyanto (2001) observation that Indonesia's "Surealis" artists present us with "reality bundled as a dream". Lucia Hartini’s work raises questions of gender and personal transformation. This thesis argues that, for many years, the tensions created by the contrary forces of political repression and social transformation characterising much of New Order Indonesia, were reflected in her art. In a microcosmic-macrocosmic sense, Lucia and her art quietly contributed to attitudinal and social change in Indonesia. Works painted between 1986 and 1996 autobiographically chart a shift from personal distress to a growing sense of empowerment, followed by life-changing spiritual growth. I contextualize these paintings socially by studying the changing interstices between Lucia Hartini’s private life, her professional creative practice and the public persona she adopted in Indonesia’s emergent civilian society. My approach is informed by a conceptual framework based on difference, hybridity and its transformations, on the psychology of borderlands, negotiation and the transcendence of boundaries, witnessed through a study of the spiritual practice and quest for religious tolerance important to Lucia and evident in her art. This thesis reveals those boundaries which were transcended and those which remain negotiable. Twice filming Lucia Hartini’s art, I was also affected by the dramatically different conditions of production prevailing in 1992 in New Order Indonesia and those possible between 1999 and 2001 during Reformasi. These differences are highlighted in the textual analysis of Perbatasan / Boundaries. Engaging comparisons between contemporary Indonesian art and Indonesian documentary and feature films, I discuss important attempts to solve the problems associated with restrictions on freedom of expression in paintings made prior to Reformasi. I consider the different uses of figurative realism to depict subjects deemed controversial by the state, and the creation of credible representations in art and convincing characterisations in filmmaking. The dramatically real yet poetic work of the Indonesian Neo-realist filmmakers of the 1950s exemplified one such solution. Their films and ideas prompted comparisons with the photo-realism, poetic intent and dramatic juxtapositional image making of the "Surealis Yogya". The relationship I perceive between Neo-realist cinematic practice and contemporary international documentary filmmaking encouraged me to make a documentary about Lucia rather than a purely creative or experimentally surreal work. Because of Reformasi and the changes wrought by Lucia’s personal development, Perbatasan / Boundaries: Lucia Hartini, Paintings from a Life (1999 – 2002) is the documentary which my first short experimental video, Pusaran / Vortex: From the Kitchen to Outer Space (1992 - 1993), made during the New Order, could not be.

I regard the techniques, conceptual approaches and processes of filmmaking as intrinsic to this exploration, a methodological perspective arising from Hendro Wiyanto (2001) observation that Indonesia’s “Surealis” artists present us with “reality bundled as a dream”. Lucia Hartini’s work raises questions of gender and personal transformation. This thesis argues that, for many years, the tensions created by the contrary forces of political repression and social transformation characterising much of New Order Indonesia, were reflected in her art. In a microcosmic-macrocosmic sense, Lucia and her art quietly contributed to attitudinal and social change in Indonesia. Works painted between 1986 and 1996 autobiographically chart a shift from personal distress to a growing sense of empowerment, followed by life-changing spiritual growth. I contextualize these paintings socially by studying the changing interstices between Lucia Hartini’s private life, her professional creative practice and the public persona she adopted in Indonesia’s emergent civilian society. My approach is informed by a conceptual framework based on difference, hybridity and its transformations, on the psychology of borderlands, negotiation and the transcendence of boundaries, witnessed through a study of the spiritual practice and quest for religious tolerance important to Lucia and evident in her art. This thesis reveals those boundaries which were transcended and those which remain negotiable. Twice filming Lucia Hartini’s art, I was also affected by the dramatically different conditions of production prevailing in 1992 in New Order Indonesia and those possible between 1999 and 2001 during Reformasi. These differences are highlighted in the textual analysis of Perbatasan / Boundaries. Engaging comparisons between contemporary Indonesian art and Indonesian documentary and feature films, I discuss important attempts to solve the problems associated with restrictions on freedom of expression in paintings made prior to Reformasi. I consider the different uses of figurative realism to depict subjects deemed controversial by the state, and the creation of credible representations in art and convincing characterisations in filmmaking. The dramatically real yet poetic work of the Indonesian Neo-realist filmmakers of the 1950s exemplified one such solution. Their films and ideas prompted comparisons with the photo-realism, poetic intent and dramatic juxtapositional image making of the “Surealis Yogya”. The relationship I perceive between Neo-realist cinematic practice and contemporary international documentary filmmaking encouraged me to make a documentary about Lucia rather than a purely creative or experimentally surreal work. Because of Reformasi and the changes wrought by Lucia’s personal development, Perbatasan / Boundaries: Lucia Hartini, Paintings from a Life (1999 – 2002) is the documentary which my first short experimental video, Pusaran / Vortex: From the Kitchen to Outer Space (1992 - 1993), made during the New Order, could not be.

Interventional radiological procedures often require long fluoroscopic exposure times and high levels of radiation exposure to patients, which often are higher than most radiological examinations except for computed tomography (CT) whose effective doses can be higher, and in addition to having radiation risks that are higher for both patient and medical staff. Therefore it is important to monitor and map the radiation entrance exposure to the patients, to minimize the probability of skin injury, and to detect areas of overlapping radiation fields. The aim of this thesis is to evaluate patient doses in interventional radiology procedures using a new GAFCHROMIC-XR TYPE R DOSIMETER MEDIA X-ray Dosimetry film, which allows mapping of the skin dose distribution, when placed closer to the skin. These radiochromic films can be characterized by a power response dose function when plotting pixel value versus air kerma and have been calibrated up to 5 Gy when using a flatbed scanner. Image analysis was performed using the red channel component of standard the RGB (Red, Green, and Blue) color space image. The association between the Maximum Entrance Skin Doses (MESD) and Dose Area Product (DAP) values for two interventional procedures; coronary angiography (CA), and percutaneous transluminal coronary angiography (PTCA) is investigated.

Ce travail porte sur l'étude des effets thermiques dans un palier hydrodynamique, alimentée par une rainure circonférentielle (CGJB) sous charge statique, en tenant compte des phénomènes de rupture de film dans la zone divergente. La recherche expérimentale a été réalisée à l'Université de Poitiers ; elle a permis une détermination minutieuse des champs de pression et de température sur la portée située à l’avant d’un CGJB et dans la section médiane de sa rainure. Ces mesures sous un régime stationnaire sont originales par rapport celles existantes, quel que le type de palier, de par le grand nombre de points de mesure, 180 pour la pression et 144 pour la température, l'instrumentation de haute précision, la large plage de conditions d'exploitation (pression spécifique variant de 0,125 à 2 MPa et vitesse linéaire de l’arbre allant de 5,25 à 21 m/s). Des études du régime transitoire de démarrage au régime stationnaire établi ont été effectuées pour de faibles charges. Des expériences effectuées à l'Université "Politehnica" de Bucarest ont montré une bonne corrélation entre la perte de portance, anti-portance et la rupture du film sur un patin Rayleigh (RSP), ce qui est essentiel pour l'évaluation des phénomènes de rupture dans les paliers. Quelques modèles théoriques ont été utilisés pour évaluer les risques de serrage au démarrage qui est une instabilité thermoélastique catastrophique. Les principaux résultats sont l’obtention d’une base fiable de données expérimentales permettant le développement des modèles théoriques avancés et l’infirmation d’une répartition de pression constante dans la zone divergente et de pression et température constantes dans la rainure d'alime
The main objective of the thesis is to study the thermal effects in steadily loaded circumferential groove journal bearings (CGJBs), including cavitation phenomena occurring in the divergent zone of such bearings. Experimental research conducted at University of Poitiers – Institut Pprime – France enabled a thorough determination of film pressure and temperature fields for the front land of a CGJB plus its mid-groove section, and several performance parameters. Measurements of film pressure and temperature fields under steady-state regime surpassed existing works, regardless of journal bearing design, through: sheer number of land measurement locations, 180 for pressure and for 144 temperature; high precision state of art instrumentation; broad range of operating conditions, 0.125 … 2 MPa specific bearing pressure and 5.25 … 21 m/s shaft speeds. Transient start-up to steady-statestabilization regimes have been investigated at low loads. Experiments at University "Politehnica" of Bucharest – Romania showed a correlation between the downforce thrust and film rupture for a Rayleigh step pin (RSP), important in evaluating divergent zone cavitation phenomena. Theoretical research consisted in developing simple models for evaluating CGJBs performance in steady-state and transient start-up regimes. Several theoretical models were employed for assessing start-up seizure, catastrophic transient thermoelastic instability and damage risk. Die vorliegende Arbeit hat zum Ziel, ausgehend vom aktuellen Stand der Technik, die Möglichkeiten der optische Glimmentladungsspektroskopie (GD-OES) für Tiefenprofilanalysen dünner und dünnster Schichten (Schichtdicken = 1 bis 100 nm) zu bestimmen und geeignete instrumentelle und methodischen Modifikationen vorzuschlagen, um die Einsatzmöglichkeiten weiter auszubauen. Dies gilt gleichermaßen unter Berücksichtigung der Anforderungen des Einsatzes im Routinebetrieb (geringe Bruttoanalysezeit und Reproduzierbarkeit) sowie in der Erforschung und der Entwicklung dünner Schichten (geringe Nachweisgrenzen, hohe Flexibilität zum Beispiel bei den analysierbaren Elementen oder der Leitfähigkeit der Proben, geringe Matrixeffekte, etc.). Während jeder GD-OES Analyse finden drei räumlich und zeitlich getrennte Teilprozesse statt: (A) durch das Zerstäuben der Oberfläche wird die Probe in der lateralen Ausdehnung des Anodendurchmessers in die Tiefe abgetragen und in die atomaren Bestandteile zerlegt (Sputterprozess); (B) in das Plasmagebiet diffundierte Partikel reagieren mit dem Analysegas (i. d. R. Argon), dadurch werden die Atome (und Ionen) der Probe in angeregte Zustände versetzt, im nachfolgenden Relaxationsschritt emittieren diese unter anderem Photonen einer charakteristischen Wellenlänge, die (C) alle in einem Detektionssystem (Mono- bzw. Polychromator oder CCD-Spektrometer) in ihrer Intensität als Funktion der spektralen Wellenlänge und der Zeit erfasst werden. Ein Vorteil der Methode, die niedrige Analysendauer bedingt durch den vergleichsweise hohen Sputterabtrag bewirkt, dass die Analyse dünner Schichten innerhalb weniger – im Extremfall sogar nur innerhalb von Bruchteilen von – Sekunden stattfindet. Dies lässt die Herausforderungen für die Analyse dünner Schichten verstehen. Der unter anderem von den elektrischen Entladungsbedingungen abhängige Sputterprozess und die komplexen Reaktionen im Plasma müssen möglichst unmittelbar (< 50 ms) nach dem Zündvorgang in einen stabilen Zustand übergehen. Einerseits ist dies instrumentell durch eine Anpassung der Steuer- und Regelungstechnik (z. B. Wahl geeigneter Druckregelventile, -sensoren, etc.) gelungen. Andererseits beeinflussen die unvermeidlichen Kontaminationen [Wasser(filme) und Kohlenwasserstoffe], die in das Plasmagebiet diffundieren, negativ die Stabilität die Entladung. Die Hauptstrategie zur Unterdrückung dieser ‚Dreckeffekte’ sind erfolgreich verschiedene Wege der ex-situ (maximalmögliche Reduzierung der Leckrate, Einsatz von Hochvakuumbauteilen, Einführung von Richtlinien zur Vakuumhygiene) und in-situ Dekontamination (aktive Desorptionsminderung durch ein Vorsputtern mit Si) gewählt worden. Erst in der Summe aller apparativen Verbesserungen ist die Voraussetzung für die Verwendung der Glimmentladungsspektroskopie als zuverlässige Methode der Dünnschichtanalytik gegeben. Für die laborpraktischen Arbeiten wurde während der sukzessiven Optimierung des Vakuumsystems als Nebenergebnis ein anwenderfreundlicher Schnelltest zur Charakterisierung des Geräts für Kurz- und Langzeitvergleiche entwickelt. Dieser wertet die Abpumpkurven bzw. Druckanstiegskurven aus. In Abhängigkeit der Bedürfnisse und dem Aufwand des Anwenders lassen sich interessante Parameter, wie das effektive Saugvermögen, eine Zeitkonstante für die Gasabgabe oder die Leckrate IL bestimmen. Die Bandbreite der untersuchten Proben ist dabei ähnlich unterschiedlich, wie die Fragestellungen: leitfähige und nichtleitfähige Proben; Nachweis und Bestimmung von Matrixelementen, Legierungsbestandteilen oder Spuren; Einfach-, Mehrlagen- und Wechselschichten, Oberflächen- und Zwischenschichten; Adsorbate an Ober- und Grenzflächen, Schichtdickenhomogenität als Teil der Qualitätskontrolle, etc. Ein Teil dieser Schichtsysteme sind in dieser Arbeit ausführlicher diskutiert worden. Das Hartstoffschichtsystem TiN gehört mit den Schichtdicken von 0,5 bis 3 µm zwar eher zu den dicken Schichten, wobei besonders der oberflächennahe Bereich (< 100 nm) zuverlässig untersucht wurde (vgl. Kap. 4.1). Mit dem Nachweis und der Quantifizierung von in der Grenzfläche (100 bzw. 1000 nm unter der Oberfläche) zwischen den elektrochemisch (ECD-Cu) und physikalisch (PVD-Cu) abgeschiedenen Cu-Schichten versteckten Adsorbaten bietet GD-OES dem Schichthersteller oder dem Werkstoffwissenschaftler wichtige Informationen, um zum Beispiel gezielt Gefügeänderungen für die Erhöhung der Elektromigrationsresistenz einzustellen. Es wurde einerseits die prinzipielle Machbarkeit und andererseits auch die Grenzen der Methode im Vergleich mit TOF-SIMS gezeigt. Ein weiteres Schichtsystem aus der Mikroelektronik ist im anschließenden Kap. 4.3 Gegenstand der GD-OES Untersuchungen. Dabei wurde nicht nur die Schichtdicken von 10 bis 50 nm dünnen TaN-Barriereschichten, sondern auch die Homogenität der Schichtdicken über einen kompletten 6’’ Wafer bestimmt. Die nachzuweisenden Unterschiede liegen im Bereich von einigen Angström bis zu wenigen Nanometern. Die GD-OES Untersuchungen von TaN zeigen zu Beginn und in der Nähe der Grenzfläche zum Substrat ungewöhnliche Intensitätsverläufe von Ta und N. Erst in Kombination mit anderen oberflächenanalytischen Verfahren (XPS und AES) gelang die Interpretation der Messergebnisse. Aus der Summe aller Argumente wird die Hypothese formuliert, dass sich im Fall des Zerstäubungsprozesses von TaN wegen der großen Unterschiede in den Atommassen ein Vorzugssputtern (engl. preferential sputtering) herausbildet. Bei anderen sputternden Verfahren, z. B. SIMS, ist dieses Phänomen längst bekannt und wurde auch für die Glimmentladungsspektroskopie vermutet. Dies konnte bislang allerdings noch nie beobachtet werden. Rechnungen mit einem Simulationsprogramm für Kollisionsvorgänge aufgrund ballistischer Effekte (TRIDYN) stützen diese Hypothese. Begünstigt wurde die Beobachtung des Vorzugssputterns durch die sauberen Messbedingungen, durch die man in Lage versetzt war, Anfangspeaks klar von Kontaminationspeak zu unterscheiden. Das vorletzte Kapitel 4.4 beschäftigt sich mit Schichten im untersten Nanometerbereich (< 5 nm). Es zeigt sich, dass die wenige Nanometer dicken, natürlichen Oxidschichten deutlich besser analysierbar sind, wenn man die in der Arbeit vorgestellte in-situ Dekontamination durch ein Vorsputtern anwendet. Die GD-OES Untersuchungen an organischen Monolagenschichten in Kap. 4.5 sind Teil einer aktuellen wissenschaftlichen Diskussion innerhalb der weltweiten GD-OES Fachwelt. Die von KENICHI SHIMIZU vorgestellten Ergebnisse konnten am Beispiel von Thioharnstoff mit RF bestätigt und erstmals auch mit einer DC-Entladung gezeigt werden. Das Verfahren der GD-OES kann qualitativ die Existenz von monomolekularen Schichten im Subnanometerbereich nachweisen. Allerdings stellen die Ergebnisse von Substraten mit anderen Molekülen die Interpretation der Intensitäts-Zeitprofile in Frage. Ein anderer Interpretationsansatz wird als Hypothese formuliert, konnte jedoch noch nicht verifiziert werden. Mit den vorgestellten Optimierungen der Messtechnik lassen sich die Möglichkeiten der Anwendung der optischen Glimmentladungsspektroskopie für die Untersuchungen dünner und dünnster Schichten deutlich erweitern.

This thesis examines the methods that director Sir Kenneth Branagh employs in his approach to directing his films and questions whether the consistency of methods adopted by Branagh across the scope of his films and their recurring themes support the status of Branagh as an auteur. Much scholarly attention has been given to Branagh’s Shakespeare films, yet there is a deficit of such attention to his later work. Using personal and published interviews, empirical evidence of the films, and text-to-text analysis, the thesis focuses upon analysis of his later films Thor, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, and Cinderella. The thesis takes an approach based upon the criteria of Sarris (2008) and Leitch (2008) to determine whether Branagh could be classified as auteur based upon his directorial oeuvre. In doing so, the thesis identifies the key components of Branagh’s methods and style and investigates his rehearsal techniques, research into the history and intertextuality of his projects, relationships with actors, and whether he uses elements of mise-en-scène as cues to reveal intertextuality. The thesis discusses Branagh’s role in semiotic coding in his films, informed by the concept of selective perception, wherein viewers tend to recognise elements in media which align with their expectations (Klapper 1960). It argues that memory of the hypotexts plays a key role in film adaptations (Ellis 1982), that their ability to evoke recall is a means of communication (Grant 2002) which can be achieved through the use of elements of mise-en-scène, (Geraghty 2008) and that the viewer and director are collaborators in producing meaning in film (Wollen 1972). This study contributes to the field of adaptation by adding scholarly literature on the films of Branagh in his post-Shakespeare era and to the subjects of auteurship and audience recall achieved through use of camera technique, intertextuality and mise-en-scène.

This research enquiries how fashion takes place constructing people`s identities, starting on an analysis of the film The Devil Wears Prada, from David Frankel. Throughout sociossemiotics and the interaction and sense regimes concept by Landowski, we study the actor`s construction on their social interactions in a the plot focused on the fashion industry scenario in which the identity paths are inserted. We describe and analyze on a sequence of small filmic narratives the way fashion takes place as cognitive modalizer of the human beings nowadays; the way it is a bush of sensitive interactancial relations; the way it works as regulatory of the ways of dressing in the social scenery and also how fashion makes accidents possible. We investigate the ways of articulation between body and clothes emphasizing that those kinds of arrangements create innumerous possibilities of appearances and how they interfere on the subjetal dynamics. We pointed as hypothesis that the style and the way it structures itself by the means of the outfits and the taste for fashion brings up forms of behavior and life actualized on the presence ways. Another hypothesis thrown was that fashion and, in its consequence, its byproducts such as clothes, accessories and the garment arrangements take place into the edification of the making to be of the individuals. Besides, we could see, in conclusion, that the presence ways of the persons are governed by the visibility ways, which create simulacral figures programmed and manipulated by the fashion industry. The ways of presence and the ways of visibility product figures broadcasted on the media, which are figurative marks of the style for the subjective searches of escape from the modulations by the adjustments and accident mechanism. We studied these mechanisms in order to understand how, on its reiteration, the styles are brought together that segment and identify belonging groups of the social constitution. The research bounds to the communication area as we take fashion as a communicational phenomenon that broadcast identities and style due to the persons make their bodies boards for the dressing that communicate messages which meanings are apprehended by the visual aesthetics
A pesquisa examina como a moda participa da construção da identidade dos sujeitos sociais, a partir de uma análise do filme O Diabo Veste Prada, de David Frankel. Por meio da sociossemiótica e dos regimes de interação e de sentido conceituados por Landowski estudamos a construção dos actantes em suas interações sociais em uma trama centrada no cenário da indústria da moda nas quais se inserem os percursos identitários. Descrevemos e analisamos em um recorte de seqüências do filme como a moda participa como modalizadora cognitiva dos sujeitos da atualidade, como esta é propulsora de relações interativas sensíveis, o modo que a mesma funciona como reguladora dos modos de vestir na sociedade e como ela possibilita acidentes. Investigamos os modos de articulação entre corpo e roupa enfatizando que esses tipos de arranjo formam as várias possibilidades de aparência e como interferem na dinâmica subjetal. Tivemos como hipótese que o estilo e modo como ele se estrutura por meio dos looks e do gosto pela moda acarreta formas de comportamento e de vida atualizadas nos modos de presença. Outra hipótese levantada foi a de que a moda e, em conseqüência, seus produtos como as roupas, acessórios e os arranjos vestimentares participam da edificação do fazer ser dos sujeitos. Além disso, constatamos, em conclusão, que os modos de presença dos sujeitos são regidos por modos de visibilidade, os quais criam imagens simulacrais programadas e manipuladas pela indústria da moda. Os modos de presença e os modos de visibilidade produzem imagens difundidas nas mídias, as quais são marcas figurativas identificáveis do estilo pelas buscas subjetivas de escapatórias das modelações por mecanismos de ajustamento e acidente. Estudamos esses mecanismos a fim de entender como, em sua reiteração, formam os estilos que segmentam e identificam grupos de pertencimento e de referência da constituição social. A pesquisa se entrelaça com a área de comunicação quando tomamos a moda como um fenômeno comunicacional que propaga identidade e estilo já que os sujeitos fazem de seus corpos suportes pelo vestir comunicam mensagens cujos significados são apreendidos pela estética visual

Während jeder GD-OES Analyse finden drei räumlich und zeitlich getrennte Teilprozesse statt: (A) durch das Zerstäuben der Oberfläche wird die Probe in der lateralen Ausdehnung des Anodendurchmessers in die Tiefe abgetragen und in die atomaren Bestandteile zerlegt (Sputterprozess); (B) in das Plasmagebiet diffundierte Partikel reagieren mit dem Analysegas (i. d. R. Argon), dadurch werden die Atome (und Ionen) der Probe in angeregte Zustände versetzt, im nachfolgenden Relaxationsschritt emittieren diese unter anderem Photonen einer charakteristischen Wellenlänge, die (C) alle in einem Detektionssystem (Mono- bzw. Polychromator oder CCD-Spektrometer) in ihrer Intensität als Funktion der spektralen Wellenlänge und der Zeit erfasst werden. Ein Vorteil der Methode, die niedrige Analysendauer bedingt durch den vergleichsweise hohen Sputterabtrag bewirkt, dass die Analyse dünner Schichten innerhalb weniger – im Extremfall sogar nur innerhalb von Bruchteilen von – Sekunden stattfindet. Dies lässt die Herausforderungen für die Analyse dünner Schichten verstehen. Der unter anderem von den elektrischen Entladungsbedingungen abhängige Sputterprozess und die komplexen Reaktionen im Plasma müssen möglichst unmittelbar (< 50 ms) nach dem Zündvorgang in einen stabilen Zustand übergehen. Einerseits ist dies instrumentell durch eine Anpassung der Steuer- und Regelungstechnik (z. B. Wahl geeigneter Druckregelventile, -sensoren, etc.) gelungen. Andererseits beeinflussen die unvermeidlichen Kontaminationen [Wasser(filme) und Kohlenwasserstoffe], die in das Plasmagebiet diffundieren, negativ die Stabilität die Entladung. Die Hauptstrategie zur Unterdrückung dieser ‚Dreckeffekte’ sind erfolgreich verschiedene Wege der ex-situ (maximalmögliche Reduzierung der Leckrate, Einsatz von Hochvakuumbauteilen, Einführung von Richtlinien zur Vakuumhygiene) und in-situ Dekontamination (aktive Desorptionsminderung durch ein Vorsputtern mit Si) gewählt worden. Erst in der Summe aller apparativen Verbesserungen ist die Voraussetzung für die Verwendung der Glimmentladungsspektroskopie als zuverlässige Methode der Dünnschichtanalytik gegeben. Für die laborpraktischen Arbeiten wurde während der sukzessiven Optimierung des Vakuumsystems als Nebenergebnis ein anwenderfreundlicher Schnelltest zur Charakterisierung des Geräts für Kurz- und Langzeitvergleiche entwickelt. Dieser wertet die Abpumpkurven bzw. Druckanstiegskurven aus. In Abhängigkeit der Bedürfnisse und dem Aufwand des Anwenders lassen sich interessante Parameter, wie das effektive Saugvermögen, eine Zeitkonstante für die Gasabgabe oder die Leckrate IL bestimmen. Die Bandbreite der untersuchten Proben ist dabei ähnlich unterschiedlich, wie die Fragestellungen: leitfähige und nichtleitfähige Proben; Nachweis und Bestimmung von Matrixelementen, Legierungsbestandteilen oder Spuren; Einfach-, Mehrlagen- und Wechselschichten, Oberflächen- und Zwischenschichten; Adsorbate an Ober- und Grenzflächen, Schichtdickenhomogenität als Teil der Qualitätskontrolle, etc. Ein Teil dieser Schichtsysteme sind in dieser Arbeit ausführlicher diskutiert worden. Das Hartstoffschichtsystem TiN gehört mit den Schichtdicken von 0,5 bis 3 µm zwar eher zu den dicken Schichten, wobei besonders der oberflächennahe Bereich (< 100 nm) zuverlässig untersucht wurde (vgl. Kap. 4.1). Mit dem Nachweis und der Quantifizierung von in der Grenzfläche (100 bzw. 1000 nm unter der Oberfläche) zwischen den elektrochemisch (ECD-Cu) und physikalisch (PVD-Cu) abgeschiedenen Cu-Schichten versteckten Adsorbaten bietet GD-OES dem Schichthersteller oder dem Werkstoffwissenschaftler wichtige Informationen, um zum Beispiel gezielt Gefügeänderungen für die Erhöhung der Elektromigrationsresistenz einzustellen. Es wurde einerseits die prinzipielle Machbarkeit und andererseits auch die Grenzen der Methode im Vergleich mit TOF-SIMS gezeigt. Ein weiteres Schichtsystem aus der Mikroelektronik ist im anschließenden Kap. 4.3 Gegenstand der GD-OES Untersuchungen. Dabei wurde nicht nur die Schichtdicken von 10 bis 50 nm dünnen TaN-Barriereschichten, sondern auch die Homogenität der Schichtdicken über einen kompletten 6’’ Wafer bestimmt. Die nachzuweisenden Unterschiede liegen im Bereich von einigen Angström bis zu wenigen Nanometern. Die GD-OES Untersuchungen von TaN zeigen zu Beginn und in der Nähe der Grenzfläche zum Substrat ungewöhnliche Intensitätsverläufe von Ta und N. Erst in Kombination mit anderen oberflächenanalytischen Verfahren (XPS und AES) gelang die Interpretation der Messergebnisse. Aus der Summe aller Argumente wird die Hypothese formuliert, dass sich im Fall des Zerstäubungsprozesses von TaN wegen der großen Unterschiede in den Atommassen ein Vorzugssputtern (engl. preferential sputtering) herausbildet. Bei anderen sputternden Verfahren, z. B. SIMS, ist dieses Phänomen längst bekannt und wurde auch für die Glimmentladungsspektroskopie vermutet. Dies konnte bislang allerdings noch nie beobachtet werden. Rechnungen mit einem Simulationsprogramm für Kollisionsvorgänge aufgrund ballistischer Effekte (TRIDYN) stützen diese Hypothese. Begünstigt wurde die Beobachtung des Vorzugssputterns durch die sauberen Messbedingungen, durch die man in Lage versetzt war, Anfangspeaks klar von Kontaminationspeak zu unterscheiden. Das vorletzte Kapitel 4.4 beschäftigt sich mit Schichten im untersten Nanometerbereich (< 5 nm). Es zeigt sich, dass die wenige Nanometer dicken, natürlichen Oxidschichten deutlich besser analysierbar sind, wenn man die in der Arbeit vorgestellte in-situ Dekontamination durch ein Vorsputtern anwendet. Die GD-OES Untersuchungen an organischen Monolagenschichten in Kap. 4.5 sind Teil einer aktuellen wissenschaftlichen Diskussion innerhalb der weltweiten GD-OES Fachwelt. Die von KENICHI SHIMIZU vorgestellten Ergebnisse konnten am Beispiel von Thioharnstoff mit RF bestätigt und erstmals auch mit einer DC-Entladung gezeigt werden. Das Verfahren der GD-OES kann qualitativ die Existenz von monomolekularen Schichten im Subnanometerbereich nachweisen. Allerdings stellen die Ergebnisse von Substraten mit anderen Molekülen die Interpretation der Intensitäts-Zeitprofile in Frage. Ein anderer Interpretationsansatz wird als Hypothese formuliert, konnte jedoch noch nicht verifiziert werden. Mit den vorgestellten Optimierungen der Messtechnik lassen sich die Möglichkeiten der Anwendung der optischen Glimmentladungsspektroskopie für die Untersuchungen dünner und dünnster Schichten deutlich erweitern.

The study of neuronal and neurodegenerative diseases requires the development of new tools and technologies to create functional neuroelectronics allowing both stimulation and recording of cellular electrical activity. In the last decade organic electronics is digging its way in the field of bioelectronics and researchers started to develop neural interfaces based on organic semiconductors. The interest in such technologies arise from the intrinsic properties of organic materials such as low cost, transparency, softness and flexibility, as well the biocompatibility and the suitability in realizing all organic printed systems. In particular, organic field-effect transistor (OFET) -based biosensors integrate the sensing and signal amplification in a single device, paving the way to new implantable neural interfaces for in vivo applications. To master the sensing and amplification properties of the OFET-based sensors, it is mandatory to gain an intimate knowledge of the single transistors (without any analytes or cells) that cannot be limited to basic characterizations or to general models. Moreover, organic transistors are characterized by different working principles and properties as respect to their inorganic counterpart. We performed pulsed and transient characterization on different OFETs (both p-type and n-type) showing that, even though the transistors can switch on and off very fast, the accumulation and/or the depletion of the conductive channel continues for times as long as ten seconds. Such phenomenon must be carefully considered in the realization of a biosensor and in its applications, since the DC operative point of the device can drift during the recording of the cellular signals, thus altering the collected data. We further investigate such phenomenon by performing characterizations at different temperatures and by applying the deep level transient spectroscopy technique. We showed that the slow channel accumulation (and depletion) is due to the semiconductor density-of-states that must be occupied in order to bring the Fermi energy level close to the conduction band. This is a phenomenon that can takes several seconds and we described it by introducing a time-depend mobility. We also proposed a technique to estimate the behavior, in time, of the position of the Fermi energy level as respect to the conduction band. To understand the electrochemical transduction processes between living cell and organic biosensor, we realized two-electrodes structure (STACKs) where a drop of saline solution is put directly in contact with the organic semiconductor. On these devices, we performed electrochemical impedance spectroscopy at different DC polarizations and we developed an equivalent circuit model for the metal-organic semiconductor-solution structures that are typically used as transducers in biosensor devices. Our approach was extending the standard range of the bias voltages applied for devices that operate in water. This particular characterization protocol allowed to distinguish and investigate the different mechanisms that occur at the different layers and interfaces: adsorption of ions in the semiconductor; accumulation and charge exchange of carriers at the semiconductor/electrolyte interface; percolation of the ionic species through the organic semiconductor; ion diffusion across the electrolyte; ion adsorption and charge exchange at the platinum interface. We highlighted the presence of ion percolation through the organic semiconductor layer, which is described in the equivalent circuit model by means of a de Levie impedance. The presence of percolation has been demonstrated by environmental scanning electron microscopy and profilometry analysis. Although percolation is much more evident at high negative bias values, it is still present even at low bias conditions. In addition, we analyze two case studies of devices featuring NaCl (concentration of 0.1M) and MilliQ water as solution, showing that both cases can be considered as a particular case of the general model presented in this manuscript. The very good agreement between the model and the experimental data makes the model a valid tool for studying the transducing mechanisms between organic films and the physiological environment. Hence this model could be a useful tool not only for the characterization and failure analysis of electronic devices, such as water-gated transistors, electrophysiological interfaces, fuel cells, and others electrochemical systems, but also this model might be used in other applications, in which a solution is in intimate contact with another material to determine and quantify, if undesired mechanisms such as percolation and/or redox corrosive processes occur. Lastly, the knowledge gain on OFETs and STACKs were put together to realize electrolyte-gated field effect transistors (EGOFETs). We then developed a model to describes EGOFETs as neural interfaces. We showed that our model can be successfully applied to understand the behaviour of a more general class of devices, including both organic and inorganic transistors. We introduced the reference-less (RL-) EGOFET and we showed that it might be successfully used as a low cost and flexible neural interface for extracellular recording in vivo without the need of a reference electrode, making the implant less invasive and easier to use. The working principle underlying RL-EGOFETs involves self-polarization and back-gate stimulation, which we show experimentally to be feasible by means of a custom low-voltage high-speed acquisition board that was designed to emulate a real-time neuron response. Our results open the door to using and optimizing EGOFETs and RL-EGOFETs for neural interfaces.
Lo studio delle malattie neuronali e neuro-degenerative richiede lo sviluppo di nuovi strumenti e tecnologie per creare dispositivi neuro-elettronici funzionali che consentano sia la stimolazione che la registrazione dell'attività elettrica cellulare. Nell'ultimo decennio l'elettronica organica sta emergendo nel campo della bioelettronica e diversi gruppi di ricerca hanno iniziato a sviluppare interfacce neurali basate su semiconduttori organici. L'interesse per tali tecnologie deriva dalle proprietà intrinseche dei materiali organici quali basso costo, trasparenza, morbidezza e flessibilità, nonché la biocompatibilità e l'idoneità nella realizzazione di sistemi stampati completamente organici. In particolare, i biosensori basati sulla tecnologia a transistor ad effetto campo organico (OFET) integrano il sensing e l'amplificazione del segnale in un singolo dispositivo, aprendo la strada a nuove interfacce neurali impiantabili per applicazioni in vivo. Per padroneggiare le proprietà di rilevamento e amplificazione dei sensori basati su OFET, è obbligatorio acquisire una conoscenza approfondita dei singoli transistor (senza la presenza di analiti e/o cellule) che vadano oltre le caratterizzazioni di base o modelli generali. Inoltre, i transistor organici sono caratterizzati da diversi principi di funzionamento e diverse proprietà rispetto alla loro controparte inorganica. In questo lavoro abbiamo svolto caratterizzazioni impulsate e transienti su diversi OFET (sia di tipo p che di tipo n) mostrando che, anche se i transistor possono accendersi e spegnersi molto velocemente, l'accumulo e/o lo svuotamento del canale conduttivo continua per tempi che possono superare le decine di secondi. Tale fenomeno deve essere attentamente considerato nella realizzazione di un biosensore e nelle sue applicazioni, poiché il punto operativo DC del dispositivo può andare alla deriva durante la registrazione dei segnali cellulari, alterando così i dati raccolti. Questo fenomeno viene ulteriormente approfondito caratterizzano i dispositivi a diverse temperature e per mezzo della tecnica DLTS. Abbiamo dimostrato che il lento accumulo (e svuotamento) del canale è dovuto alla densità di stati del semiconduttore organico che devono poter essere occupati per portare il livello energetico di Fermi vicino alla banda di conduzione. Questo è un fenomeno che può richiedere diversi secondi che possiamo descrivere introducendo una mobilità dipendente dal tempo. Per comprendere i processi di trasduzione elettrochimica tra cellule viventi ed il biosensore organico, abbiamo realizzato una struttura a due elettrodi (STACK) in cui una goccia di soluzione salina viene messa direttamente a contatto con il semiconduttore organico. Su questi dispositivi, abbiamo eseguito la spettroscopia di impedenza elettrochimica a diverse polarizzazioni DC e abbiamo sviluppato un modello circuitale equivalente per le strutture metallo/semiconduttore organico/soluzione che vengono tipicamente utilizzate per la realizzazione di bio-trasduttori. Il nostro approccio prevede di estendere il range standard delle tensioni operative per questo genere di dispositivi. Ciò ha permesso di investigare e distinguere i diversi fenomeni che si verificano nei diversi strati e interfacce: adsorbimento di ioni nel semiconduttore; accumulo e scambio di cariche di portanti all'interfaccia semiconduttore/elettrolita; percolazione delle specie ioniche attraverso il semiconduttore organico; diffusione di ioni attraverso l'elettrolita; adsorbimento di ioni e scambio di carica all'interfaccia col metallo. Abbiamo evidenziato la presenza di percolazione ionica attraverso lo strato di semiconduttore organico, che è descritto nel modello circuitale per mezzo di un'impedenza di de Levie. La presenza di percolazione è stata dimostrata mediante microscopia elettronica a scansione ambientale e analisi profilometrica. Sebbene la percolazione sia molto più evidente a valori di bias negativi elevati, risulta presente anche a basse condizioni di bias. L'ottimo accordo tra il modello e i dati sperimentali rende il modello un valido strumento per studiare i meccanismi di trasduzione tra film organici e l'ambiente fisiologico. Quindi questo modello può essere uno strumento utile non solo per la caratterizzazione e l'analisi dei guasti dei dispositivi elettronici, come water-gated transistor, interfacce elettrofisiologiche, celle a combustibile e altri sistemi elettrochimici, ma anche nel caso in cui una soluzione è in intimo contatto con un altro materiale per determinare e/o quantificare se si verificano meccanismi indesiderati come percolazione e/o processi corrosivi. Infine, il bagaglio di conoscenze ottenuto studiando i dispositivi OFET e STACK è stato messo utillizato per realizzare dispositivi EGOFET. Abbiamo quindi sviluppato un modello per descrivere gli EGOFET come interfacce neurali. Abbiamo dimostrato che il nostro modello può essere applicato con successo per comprendere il comportamento di una classe più generale di dispositivi, compresi i transistor sia organici che inorganici. Abbiamo introdotto l'RL-EGOFET (reference-less EGOFET) e abbiamo dimostrato che questa struttura può essere utilizzata con successo come interfaccia neurale flessibile per il recording extracellulare in vivo senza la necessità di un elettrodo di riferimento, rendendo l'impianto meno invasivo e più facile da usare. I nostri risultati aprono la strada all'utilizzo e all'ottimizzazione di EGOFET e RL-EGOFET come interfacce neurali.

Someone once told me: ""In order to write well, you have to write what you know"" - this piece of advice seems obvious and simple and yet - as it turned out, it was the most difficult piece of advice to process and follow. The reason: what I know was that I was a young, female, Cape Malay filmmaker. My experiences, has largely taken place within the Cape Malay community. Religious documentaries aside, I had never before seen any representation of myself, or may community on screen. The task I had set myself seemed impossible. I had researched Thirld world theory in cinema and the weight of expectation that I felt afterward seemed a burden too hard to carry. This was not because I was in unchartered territory, but because this path has been walked by many before me: African-American filmmakers; Non-resident Indian filmmakers; Pilipino-American filmmakers; Mexican-American filmmakers; Afro-Brazilian filmmakers; Asian-American filmmakers. The list goes on and on. The one common thread is that these people felt a need to provide another point of view other than the ones seen in mainstream film and television. Their films have been like voices for the token characters that we've seen in countless mainstream films.

G-Net system is being developed by the members of the G-Net research group under the supervision of Dr. K. Jay Bagga. The principle objective of the G-Net system is to provide an integrated tool for dealing with various aspects of graph theory. G-Net system is divided into two parts. GETS (Graph theory Experiments Tool Set) will provide a set of tools to experiment with graph theory, and HYGRES (HYpertext Graph theory Reference Service), the second subcomponent of the G-Net system to aid graph theory study and research. In this research a hypertext application is built to present the graph theory concepts, graph models and the algorithms. In other words, HYGRES (Guide Version) provides the hypertext facilities for organizing a graph theory database in a very natural and interactive way. An hypertext application development tool, called Guide, is used to implement this version of HYGRES. This project integrates the existing version of GETS so that it can also provide important services to HYGRES. The motivation behind this project is to study the initial criterion for developing a hypertext system, which can be used for future development of a stand alone version of the G-Net system.

The novel Rimbaud le fils written by Pierre Michon is analysed in this study, using the theoretical model of modalities and modes of media elaborated by Lars Elleström (2010), the typology of intermediality defined by Werner Wolf (2002) and Irina Rajewsky’s (2010) metatheoretical reflections upon the concept of borders. The novel by Michon relates to some famous photos that have become important in creating the understandings of Arthur Rimbaud as a poet and a myth. The guiding question of the analysis has been: How can the intermedial relations to the photos create meaning in the novel?   The theoretical model of Elleström has been applied in order to define the modalities and modes involved in the photography and in the written text of the novel. Thereby the significant differences and similarities between the different media have become distinguishable. The categorization proposed by Wolf and the remarks made by Rajewsky on the concepts of borders, have helped to link together the observations of modalities and modes with the hermeneutic reading of the text. Using the intermedial references has shown to be a possible way to express or to reinforce the literary expression of for instance: the heaviness of the literary legacy and mythology, the absent, the genius, the departure, the silence, the religious language, the unknown, the literary sham, the survival and the protective power of an expressive richness that relates to or implies several semiotic systems.

This paper reports the results of a study, which was carried out to investigate the information needs of the attorneys in a large South African law firm. The survey research method was employed and a single survey conducted within a particular time-span. Two methods of data collection were employed, namely the analysis of documentary sources and questioning. A combination of self-administered questionnaires and interviews were used to gather the data. The questionnaire designed by the researcher consisted of closed and open-ended questions and a rating scale was used where appropriate to enable the respondents to express their opinions or strength of preferences. The majority of the questions included a general response category that made it possible for respondents to enter other relevant data and personal observations. The questionnaire was sent to all the Bowman Gilfillan attorneys via electronic mail. The email, which included the questionnaire as a MSWord attachment, introduced and explained the purpose of the questionnaire. All questions incorporated in the questionnaire were subjected to cross-tabulation to establish the impact of the independent or classification variables on the dependent variables. The following variables were considered during cross-tabulation: respondent's age, position in the firm and number of years experience as attorney. To establish which results were significant the Pearson chi-square statistical test was applied to all bivariate relations. Results that yielded a chi-square statistic below the .01 significance level were rejected. This study sought to investigate why the attorneys need work-related information, what type of work-related information they require, which sources and systems of information they use and what the factors are that influence their information-seeking behaviour. As a law librarian, the researcher also investigated the role of the law librarian and library in the provision of work-related information to the attorneys. The findings revealed that the attorneys required access to work-related information to provide a legal service to their clients and that their most important information need is to establish the current status of the law and to keep up-to-date with the latest legal developments. The attorneys made use of various informal and personal sources of information (e.g. colleagues) and the library and required access to primary and secondary sources of law as well as non-legal information. The findings also indicated that the attorneys required quick and easy access to current and accurate information and that factors such as age, number of years experience as an attorney and position in the law firm appeared to influence the use of the various sources and systems of information as the younger, less experienced attorneys had a greater need for the various sources and systems of information. The study also found that law librarians and libraries undoubtedly have an important role to play in the provision of work related information.

A study of information available on the settlement characteristics of backfill in restored opencast coal mining sites and other similar earthworks projects has been undertaken. In addition, the methods of opencast mining, compaction controls, monitoring and test methods have been reviewed. To consider and develop the methods of predicting the settlement of fill, three sites in the West Midlands have been examined; at each, the backfill had been placed in a controlled manner. In addition, use has been made of a finite element computer program to compare a simple two-dimensional linear elastic analysis with field observations of surface settlements in the vicinity of buried highwalls. On controlled backfill sites, settlement predictions have been accurately made, based on a linear relationship between settlement (expressed as a percentage of fill height) against logarithm of time. This `creep' settlement was found to be effectively complete within 18 months of restoration. A decrease of this percentage settlement was observed with increasing fill thickness; this is believed to be related to the speed with which the backfill is placed. A rising water table within the backfill is indicated to cause additional gradual settlement. A prediction method, based on settlement monitoring, has been developed and used to determine the pattern of settlement across highwalls and buried highwalls. The zone of appreciable differential settlement was found to be mainly limited to the highwall area, the magnitude was dictated by the highwall inclination. With a backfill cover of about 15 metres over a buried highwall the magnitude of differential settlement was negligible. Use has been made of the proposed settlement prediction method and monitoring to control the re-development of restored opencase sites. The specifications, tests and monitoring techniques developed in recent years have been used to aid this. Such techniques have been valuable in restoring land previously derelict due to past underground mining.

El presente trabajo de investigación se fundamenta en la aplicación de procesos estandarizados y buenas prácticas de la Guía PMBOK® 6ta edición, a los grupos de procesos de inicio y planificación del proyecto; con el fin de implementar un plan para la dirección del proyecto de elaboración del Expediente Técnico Para la Construcción del Colegio Buen Pastor de Ñaña, donde se defina cómo se planifica, monitorea y controla el desempeño del proyecto durante su ciclo de vida. Los principales entregables para la dirección del proyecto, serán el acta de constitución, el registro de interesados, el plan para la dirección del proyecto, que incluye la línea base del alcance, costo y cronograma, y que en conjunto constituyen la línea base para la medición del desempeño del proyecto, el plan de respuesta a los riesgos, el plan de gestión de las adquisiciones y el plan de gestión de las comunicaciones. Los resultados del análisis de inversión en 9 años, demostraron que el proyecto es financieramente viable considerando un Valor Presente Neto (VAN o VPN) de S/ 4,762,061, Tasa Interna de Retorno (TIR) del 27 %, y el Retorno Sobre la Inversión (ROI) de 117%. Por lo tanto, el presente trabajo de investigación muestra una situación ideal aplicando las buenas prácticas de la Guía de los Fundamentos para la Dirección de Proyectos - sexta edición, para aumentar las posibilidades de éxito en los proyectos de edificaciones que emprenda la organización.
The present research work is based on the application of standardized processes and good practices of the PMBOK® Guide 6th edition, to the project initiation and planning process groups; in order to implement a project management plan for the preparation of the Technical File for the Construction of “Colegio Buen Pastor de Ñaña”, where it is defined how the performance of the project is planned, monitored and controlled during its life cycle. The main deliverables for the project management will be the project charter, the registry of stakeholders, the project management plan, which includes the baseline of the scope, cost and schedule, and which together constitute the baseline for the measurement of project performance; the risk response plan, the procurement management plan and the communications management plan. The results of the investment analysis in 9 years showed that the project is financially viable considering a Net Present Value (NPV) of S / 4,762,061, Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of 27%, and Return on investment (ROI) 117%. Therefore, the present research work shows an ideal situation applying the good practices of the Guide of the Fundamentals for Project Management - sixth edition, to increase the chances of success in the building projects that the organization undertakes.

Increased production and use of multimedia data has led to the development of a more advanced Database Management System (DBMS), like an Object Relational Database Management System (ORDBMS). These advanced databases are necessitated by the complexity in structure and the functionality required by multimedia data. Unfortunately, no suitable benchmarks exist with which to test the performance of databases when handling multimedia data. This thesis describes the design of a benchmark to measure the performance of basic functionality found in multimedia databases. The benchmark, called MORD (Multimedia Object Relational Databases), targets Oracle, a well known commercial Object Relational Database Management System (ORDBMS) that can handle multimedia data. Although MORD targets Oracle, it can easily be applied to other Multimedia Database Management System (MMDBMS) as a result of a design that stressed its portability, and simplicity. MORD consists of a database schema, test data, and code to simulate representative queries on multimedia databases. A number of experiments are described that validate MORD and ensure its correct design and that its objectives are met. A by-product of these experiments is an initial understanding of the performance of multimedia databases. The experiments show that with multimedia data the buffer cache should be at least large enough to hold the largest dataset, a bigger block size improves the performance, and turning off logging and caching for bulk loading improves the performance. MORD can be used to compare different ORDBMS or to assist in the configuration of a specific database.

Die „Liste der fachlichen Nachschlagewerke zu den Normdateien“ stellt mit ihren derzeit mehr als 1.800 Einträgen ein verbindliches Arbeitsinstrument für die tägliche Praxis in der kooperativen Normdatenpflege des deutschsprachigen Raumes, speziell für die Terminologiearbeit in der bibliothekarischen Sacherschließung, dar. In jedem Normdatensatz der Schlagwortnormdatei (SWD) werden für den Nachweis und die Begründung der Ansetzungs- und Verweisungsformen eines Deskriptors im Feld „Quelle“ Referenzwerke aus der so genannten Prioritätenliste (Rangfolge der Nachschlagewerke), darüber hinaus aus der gesamten NSW-Liste, festgehalten und normiert abgekürzt. Diese Liste erscheint – von der Deutschen Nationalbibliothek (DNB) regelmäßig aktualisiert – jährlich in gedruckter Form mit einem Änderungsdienst (Änderungen, Neuauflagen; Neuaufnahmen) und steht seit einigen Jahren auch elektronisch abrufbar bereit. Dennoch ist sie „in die Jahre“ gekommen. Eine verbesserte Form der NSW-Liste war daher ein langjähriges Desiderat. In dem Vortrag wird über die konzipierten Funktionalitäten, die datentechnische Realisierung, die praktische Verwendung, den aktuellen Entwicklungsstand und die potenzielle Weiterentwicklung des neuen NSW-Tools berichtet. Durch die praxisorientierte Aufbereitung in diesem Tool wird die Einhaltung der für alle Neuansetzungen verbindlichen Rangfolge ganz entscheidend erleichtert, was von Beginn an die Qualität jedes Normdatensatzes erhöht. Den größten Zeitgewinn in der täglichen Praxis bringt der sofortige Zugriff auf verlinkte Volltexte. - Angesichts des zunehmenden multilateralen Datentausches bei gleichzeitiger dramatischer Verknappung personeller Ressourcen trotz eines erheblichen Anstiegs des inhaltlich zu erschließenden Literaturaufkommens wird dies im Workflow des vor kurzem eingeführten Online-Redaktionsverfahrens (ONR) für Normdaten der wohl nachhaltigste Effekt von „NSW online“ sein und auch in der künftigen Gemeinsamen Normdatei (GND) bleiben.

Néanmoins, bien que l'on puisse établir un lien entre les deux au niveau des affinités théoriques, il manque une analyse du rapport entre ces affinités et les références effectives que Marx fait à Spinoza. Ln recent decades, the relationship between Spinoza and Marx was discussed by authors such as Louis Althusser, Antonio Negri and Maximilien Rubel. However, although we can establish a link between the two in terms of theoretical affinities, it lacks an analysis of the relationship between these affinities and actual references From Marx to Spinoza. Until now, we do not know more about the specific way these references can articulate with the objectives inherent to Marx 's philosophical and political activism throughout his life. This study therefore seeks to browse the first writings from Marx in order to study the presence of Spinoza, and simultaneously demonstrate to which purposes this presence attended. At the same time, and just as importantly, we seek to show that, although these references explain how Marx moved away From Spinoza, they nevertheless reveal that in this distance, Marx finally find, not so much Spinoza, but Spinozism

Existing cache organization suffers from the inability to distinguish different types of localities, and non-selectively cache all data rather than making any attempt to take special advantage of the locality type. This causes unnecessary movement of data among the levels of the memory hierarchy and increases in miss ratio. In this dissertation I propose a split data cache architecture that will group memory accesses as scalar or array references according to their inherent locality and will subsequently map each group to a dedicated cache partition. In this system, because scalar and array references will no longer negatively affect each other, cache-interference is diminished, delivering better performance. Further improvement is achieved by the introduction of victim cache, prefetching, data flattening and reconfigurability to tune the array and scalar caches for specific application. The most significant contribution of my work is the introduction of novel cache architecture for embedded microprocessor platforms. My proposed cache architecture uses reconfigurability coupled with split data caches to reduce area and power consumed by cache memories while retaining performance gains. My results show excellent reductions in both memory size and memory access times, translating into reduced power consumption. Since there was a huge reduction in miss rates at L-1 caches, further power reduction is achieved by partially or completely shutting down L-2 data or L-2 instruction caches. The saving in cache sizes resulting from these designs can be used for other processor activities including instruction and data prefetching, branch-prediction buffers. The potential benefits of such techniques for embedded applications have been evaluated in my work. I also explore how my cache organization performs for non-numeric data structures. I propose a novel idea called "Data flattening" which is a profile based memory allocation technique to compress sparsely scattered pointer data into regular contiguous memory locations and explore the potentials of my proposed Spit cache organization for data treated with data flattening method.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: National and international studies on the impact of the HIVand AIDS epidemie, create a picture of serious negative effects on the South African economy, together with immense suffering and despair for her people. The untimely death of millions of people due to a disease is totally unnatural and basically unimaginable and it is therefore not surprising that people, organisations and government tend to shy away from the problems. Businesses drive growth and development, mobilise investment, nurture innovation, provide employment, develop skills, pay taxes and provide returns to investors. Outside the political arena businesses is the only group that do have the capacity and resources to make a major and effective contribution to the fight against the HIV and AIDS epidemic. This study provides a theoretical introduction to HIV and AIDS but more importantly it indicates that the business world has woken up to the threat of the HIV and AIDS epidemic and are reacting to it. The study concludes that the battle is not won as yet. There is room for improvement and major enhancements are required to current strategies and programmes to make it more effective. Eskom was selected as the case study to substantiate the abovementioned opinions and conclusions.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Nasionale en internasionale studies oor die impak van die MIV en VIGS-epidemie dui op die ernstige negatiewe gevolge vir die Suid-Afrikaanse ekonomie. Dit veroorsaak ook geweldige lyding en wanhoop onder mense. Die ontydige dood van miljoene mense weens 'n siekte is heeltemal onnatuurlik en ondenkbaar. Dit is daarom geen wonder nie dat mense, organisasies en die regering daarvan wegskram. Sakeondernemings dryf groei en ontwikkeling, mobiliseer beleggingsmoontlikhede, moedig vernuwing aan, skep werkgeleenthede, ontwikkel vaardighede, betaal belasting en verskaf 'n opbrengs aan beleggers. Buite die politieke arena is sakeondernemings die enigste groep wat die kapasiteit en hulpbronne het om op grootskaal 'n doeltreffende bydrae te lewer tot die bekamping van die MIV en VIGS epidemie. Die studie is 'n teoretiese inleiding tot MIV en VIGS. Die belangrikste aspek wat na vore kom, is dat sakeondernemings wakker geskrik het oor die bedreiging van MIV en VIGS en dat hulle daarop reageer. Die studie kom tot die gevolgtrekking dat die geveg nog nie gewen is nie. Daar is baie ruimte vir verbetering en grootskaalse veranderinge is nodig om die huidige strategieë en programme meer doeltreffend te maak. Eskom is as gevallestudie gebruik om bogenoemde menings en gevolgtrekkings te ondersteun.

This thesis investigates the persistence of blackface in Hollywood's early sound era 1927-1953. It establishes the extensive and complex nature of this persistence against previous historical accounts of its decline after the introduction of sound. Specifically this thesis considers the overlooked phenomenon of co-presence where blackface was juxtaposed with the increased visibility of African-Americans in Hollywood film. It argues that the primary historical significance of the persistence of blackface lies in its involvement in, and exposure of, the formal stereotyping of African Americans in film. The thesis is founded on research which identified 124 blackface films and on viewings of 75 of these films. Primarily the argument is advanced on the basis of close textual analysis. In addition to its theoretical engagement with key positions on blackface and related areas the thesis also makes use of secondary sources in order to establish the historical context behind its persistence in film. Principle areas discussed include the formal practices used to racially mark African Americans in film, co-presence in the films of Al Jolson and Eddie Cantor, and blackface and the racial containment of African-American vernacular dance and music. This thesis contributes to an understanding of the place of blackface in Hollywood history by setting down what is, to the best of its author's knowledge, the most extensive account to date of its persistence in the early sound era. In doing so it brings new material to the debates on the 'nature' of blackface and argues that current attempts to revise understandings of its racial bias may be misguided. In conclusion this thesis finds that the case study of co-presence indicates that one explanation for the longevity of Hollywood's African-American stereotypes lies in the sheer density of their textual construction.

Dans les annees cinquante, hitchcock systematise le procede de la reference picturale dans la conception de ses films. Basee sur l'analyse de six longs metrages realises par le cineaste entre 1954 et 1964 - rear window, vertigo, north by northwesf, psycho, the birds et marnie -, cette recherche s'efforce de mettre en evidence l'existence de tels dispositifs dans son oeuvre. Apres avoir pointe leur diversite et interroge la nature des corpus de referents deployes, sont releves les indices qui attestent de leur presence. Les fonctions de ces procedes sont ensuite interrogees. Le film peut-il etre utilise comme exegese du tableau qu'il transpose ? comment le film detoume-t-il le reseau d'affects associe a la composition ? quel rapport le cineaste entretient-il avec la peinture ? confronte a l'image filmique dans un rapport dialogique complexe ou il est envisage individuellement ou en serie, le referent introduit certaines zones de sens, structure le recit. Une analyse de the birds est proposee dans cette perspective. En prenant en compte les references picturales travaillees, elle fournit une serie d'explications aux attaques exposees. Bien qu'elle apporte un enrichissement indeniable, cette intrusion massive de la peinture dans l'esthetique filmique est abordee avec apprehension. Le modele pictural entraine un figement du spectacle cinematographique et la dynamique filmique une mise en mouvement du tableau qui generent une serie de dysfonctionnements repercutes dans le recit. De cette confrontation entre images fixes et animees, envisagee comme un combat ou sont projetes lespersonnages, la peinture sort systematiquement victorieuse.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The World Wide Web should become more important as technology advances. Because people use the Web differently to traditional media, media companies should investigate the new medium to fully reap its benefits and to understand its future impact on their revenue streams. British media companies have co-operated and invested heavily in the Internet for years and continue to do so through content portals, typically web sites for their newspaper titles. They initially did so to protect themselves from entrepreneurs who potentially threatened their classified advertising revenues with Web-only classified advertising directories. Classified advertising works better on the Web. A newspaper's website seems to have no adverse effect on its circulation. Via their websites, newspapers can reach and market to people who would otherwise not buy them. British advertisers are spending more on advertising online and on advertising in the regional press. Rapidly expanding Newsquest is the second-largest British regional publisher. Its management structure is hierarchial and it aggressively controls costs. Although the digital media department of Newsquest (London) has some flaws (notably when it comes to communication with other departments), its strategy is generally sound. Newsquest's newsrooms are multi-media and all journalists contribute to and maintain newspaper websites. Most of Newsquest's Internet revenue comes from charging classified advertisers more for uploading their adverts to the websites. The adverts are listed in Fish-t, a classified advertising database maintained by most UK regional publishers. Whereas Newsquest's regional policies are generally sound, national plans and software programmes are often not suitable for such a devolved corporation. Newquest's strategy of aggressive cost control by underpaying staff (and hence often not being able to retain top performers) jeopardises its classified advertising revenues, as the competition it faces on the Web is larger than in traditional circulation areas. Greater automation is necessary to bypass shortomings and errors made by low-performing staff. The Watford Observer's website is operated similarly to a free newspaper. Newsroom staff are encouraged to take ownership of it and emphasis lies on convincing online readers to buy The Watford Observer in print. The website plays an important role in marketing the newspaper and mainly generates profit by providing added value to advertisers. The newspaper's circulation has been falling for some time and some senior managers ascribe this to the Internet. By means of a home delivery system that allows people to subscribe to the printed newspaper online, circulation could be boosted through the website. The current subscriptions model is ineffective. With the exception of CaxtonlCTP, some major South African media companies with regional titles follow a pro-active newspaper website strategy. Although there is a critical mass of wealthy consumers and technological development is sufficient, government telecommunications policy and the telephone operator's monopoly seriously undermine Internet use and media companies' profits from it. As technology advances (portable, fold-up displays are not far off), newspaper content may in future be displayed exclusively online. This is problematic, as display advertising is ineffective on the Web. Newspaper publishers could acquire mobile telephone operators and Internet service providers to control these developments. Newspaper companies must (and many do) accept they need to be multimedia publishers in the future. South African media companies are forced to maintain low-key Internet operations until government telecommunications policy changes. Newsquest's online business model is an example what could potentially be achieved.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The purpose of this report is to create a better understanding of the new pharmacy initiatives in the South African market, with specific reference to the Nuclicks and Pick 'n Pay groups. In order to understand the respective business concepts better the following abstracts from each chapter of the study is given. Chapter one is basically the introduction to the study and describes the events that lead to the above mentioned corporate retailers to enter the pharmacy market place. An introduction to Hamel's business model theory is also discussed and identified as a possible means of evaluating the corporate retailers' business concepts. In Chapter two the strategic analysis of the South African retail pharmacy industry is performed. This analysis is performed to create an understanding of the different forces at work in the industry. Some of the key findings in this chapter are that changes to the pharmacy act and the way dispensing licences are going to be awarded creates uncertainty. The profit outlook of retail pharmacy, though on the decline, still compares favourably to other retailers. In chapter three the core concepts of Hamel's business model are presented in more detail and applied to the retail pharmacy environment. In his view, a strategy needs to change the industry rules. This chapter ends with the concept of wealth potential based on Hamel's teachings. The wealth potential concept is about creating cash flow and profits. A business model that is able to create customer benefits well below the cost of the competitors is regarded as efficient. By utilising the Hamel way the Nuclicks (chapter four) and Pick 'n Pay (chapter five) business concepts is unpacked. Both Nuclicks and Pick 'n Pay pharmacy business models are presented within the corporate framework of the groups. Nuclicks bought an established pharmacy franchise while Pick 'n Pay launched Healthpharm. Nuclicks creates a possible choke point by buying UPD. The Nuclicks pharmacy strategy is a more comprehensive health strategy, while Pick 'n Pay follows a more cautious approach. As franchising will playa major role in both pharmacy concepts, the theory of franchising is presented in chapter six. Telephonic interviews with Link franchisees are conducted and the possible reasons for the ambiguity that crept into the Link business model are discussed. As the Healthpharm franchise is a new concept, it is evaluated based on information gathered from press releases and the Healthpharm web-site. In chapter seven universal conclusions and recommendations, based upon the literature study and this investigation, are presented. One of the key findings are, success in the face of changes requires more than the current way of doing business. It requires an innovative thinking process. New business models have to be formulated that allows retail pharmacists to establish a focused and well-differentiated value proposition. This value proposition needs to be meaningful for consumers and must strengthen a pharmacy outlet's competitive position.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die doel van hierdie verslag is om 'n beter begrip vir die nuwe apteek inisiatiewe in die Suid-Afrikaanse mark te ontwikkel, met spesifieke verwysing na die Nuclicks en Pick 'n Pay groepe. Om die onderskeie besiqheidskonsepte beter te verstaan, word die volgende opsomming van elke hoofstuk van die studie uiteengesit. Hoofstuk een is 'n inleiding tot die studie en beskryf die gebeure wat aanleiding gegee het tot die bogenoemde korporatiewe kleinhandelaars se toetrede tot die apteek mark. 'n Inleiding van Hamel se besigheidsmodel teorie is ook bespreek en is geïdentifiseer as evaluering van die korporatiewe kleinhandelaars se besigheidskonsepte. Hoofstuk twee bied 'n strategiese analise van die Suid-Afrikaanse kleinhandelaars apteek industrie. Hierdie analise is geskep om beter begrip te ontwikkel vir die verskillende kragte wat inwerk in die industrie. Van die bevindinge in die hoofstuk is die veranderinge in die apteek wetgewing en die wyse waarop resepteer lisensies toegeken gaan word, en hoeveel onsekerhede dit tot gevolg het. Die wins vooruitsigte van kleinhandelaars apteke, alhoewel aan die afneem, vergelyk steeds gunstig met ander kleinhandelaars. In Hoofstuk drie is die kern konsepte van Hamel se besigheidsmodel in meer detail uiteengesit en toegepas op die kleinhandelaar apteek omgewing. Uit sy oogpunt, is 'n strategie nodig om veranderinge te weeg te bring in die industrie reëls. Hierdie hoofstuk eindig met die konsep van waarde potensiaal wat gebaseer is op Hamel se teorie. Hierdie waarde potensiaal konsep is gebaseer op die skep van kontantvloei en 'n Besigheidsmodel wat in staat is om die kliënt te begunstig heelwat laer as die koste van die teenstander, word beskou as effektief. Hamel se teorie is gebruik om Nuclicks (hoofstuk vier) en Pick 'n Pay (hoofstuk vyf) se besigheidskonsepte te analiseer. Beide Nuclicks en Pick 'n Pay se besigheidsmodelle word aangebied binne die korporatiewe raakwerke van die groepe. Nuclicks het 'n gevestigde apteek konsessie gekoop terwyl Pick 'n Pay vir Healthpharm begin het. Nuclicks het 'n moontlike 'wurgpunt" geskep deur die aankoop van UPD. Die Nuclicks apteek strategie is 'n meer omvattende gesondheidstrategie, terwyl Pick 'n Pay 'n meer versigtige benadering volg. Aangesien besigheid konsessie 'n belangrike rol speel in beide apteek konsepte, word die teorie van konsessie in hoofstuk ses behandel. Telefoniese onderhoude is gevoer met Link konsessiehouers en die moontlike redes vir die twyfelagtigheid van die Link besigheidsmodel word bespreek. Aangesien die Healthpharm konsessie 'n nuwe konsep is, word dit geëvalueer op grond van inligting wat versamel is uit die media en die Healthpharm webtuiste. In Hoofstuk sewe word universele afleidings en aanbevelings, gebaseer op die literatuurstudie en die ondersoek, uiteengesit. Een van die hoof bevindings was dat sukses benodig meer as die huidige manier van besigheid doen. Nuwe besigheidsmodelle moet geformuleer word, wat dit vir kleinhandelaar apteke moontlik sal maak om 'n gefokusde en goed gedifferensieerde waarde voorstel tot stand te bring. Hierdie voorstel moet betekenisvol wees vir die verbruiker en moet die apteek kompeterende posisie versterk.

This study of the Irish Home Rule crisis of 1885-6 arises from a sense of the limitations of an exclusively 'high political' approach. It seeks to show how Liberal policy makers related to their supporters in Britain, and how the rank and file both influenced and responded to their leaders' initiatives. Within the framework of a national portrait, certain areas receive special attention: much of the evidence relates to the traditional Liberal strongholds of south-west England, west Yorkshire, Tyneside, south-central Wales and the Birmingham and Edinburgh regions. This dissertation seeks an answer to the question: how was it that, in 1886, a majority of Liberals came to accept the idea of Home Rule, which was hitherto the property of an uninfluential radical minority? Chapter One places the espousal of Home Rule by the Liberal leader, Gladstone, in a broad chronological context and explores the roots of the uneasy relationship between British Liberalism and Irish nationalism. This theme is further developed in Chapters Two and Three. The fourth chapter examines Liberal perceptions of Ireland as a strategic and imperial problem; and a related issue, the neglected controversy over Irish representation at Westminster, is the subject of the fifth. Chapter Six reviews the strategies devised by Liberal supporters and opponents of Home Rule in their efforts to generate a popular appeal for their respective causes. Chapter Seven aims to rescue from historiographical neglect the almost universally unpopular Land purchase Bill which accompanied Gladstone's Home Rule proposals. The remaining chapters deal with rank and file perceptions of the party leaders and with constituency pressures upon parliamentarians. It will be argued that the unfamiliarity of Home Rule, and the conflicting passions which its elevation aroused, enhanced the role of personalities. For most Liberals, traditional loyalties - especially to the charismatic figure of Gladstone - were the decisive factor in 1886.

En este trabajo se abordará la problemática existente a la hora de versionar al cine obras de Gabriel García Márquez, para lo que se analizarán seis novelas del autor colombiano con sus respectivas versiones cinematográficas, enfocadas al análisis literario y sociocultural, ya que es posible que el foco del problema en dichas versiones sea la falta de visión en cuanto a la realidad de Colombia. La coyuntura histórica es un factor clave en la narrativa y estilo de cualquier escritor. La Guerra de los mil días y la crisis social, moral y económica en la que se sumió Colombia son tan sólo algunos de los hechos que rodearon a Gabriel García Márquez. En obras como Eréndira, Crónica de una muerte anunciada, El coronel no tiene quien le escriba, El amor en los tiempos del cólera, Del amor y otros demonios o Memoria de mis putas tristes, se pueden notar muchos aspectos que reflejan la realidad que en ese entonces estaba viviendo el escritor, cuyo subtexto no deja de mostrar el permanente estado de inquietud, incertidumbre y desasosiego en la vida del ciudadano común de su país natal, donde se puede sentir el clamor de los más sometidos, de los que sufren bajo el yugo de los opresores más desalmados, tópico replicado en toda la novelística de García Márquez. Otros temas abordados en dichas obras son: el amor (fraternal, sexual e idílico), el matrimonio, la política, la pedofilia, la prostitución, la guerra, la religión, el machismo y las tradiciones familiares, entre muchos otros que caracterizan los problemas de una región inexplorada y desconocida para muchos, Latinoamérica. Muchas de esas obras de García Márquez han sido llevadas a la gran pantalla, unas con menos éxito que otras, aunque algunas hayan sido objeto de elogio como obras de arte audiovisuales. El fracaso comercial de la gran mayoría de estas adaptaciones responde al desacierto de muchos cineastas, que no han sabido complacer los gustos de los diferentes receptores a los que les ha tocado enfrentarse. Si queremos defender las adaptaciones cinematográficas, es necesario despojar de toda culpa al género de la adaptación como tal, recordando que toda adaptación debe ser valorada de diversas maneras, tanto a nivel de guion como a nivel de material artístico audiovisual, ya que la literatura y el cine emplean dos lenguajes completamente distintos. Este trabajo se enfocará también en el análisis de numerosos estudiosos y críticos que han brindado sus profundos trabajos e investigaciones sobre el tema de las adaptaciones, cuya visión negativa se ha visto difuminada con el tiempo. Bluestone, Elliot, Mc-Farlane, Cartmell and Whelehan, Casetti y Bazin son tan solo algunos de los críticos que han hecho referencia a la evolución de las adaptaciones cinematográficas hasta nuestros días, una evolución que no sólo se ha visto en la parte tecnológica, sino también en la parte ideológica de cada crítico y espectador que ve y juzga la obra. García Márquez ha trabajado con cineastas de renombre, como Ripstein, Guerra, Rosi, Newel, Hidalgo o Carlsen, entre muchos otros, que han tratado de llevar a la pantalla de manera satisfactoria el intrincado mundo del escritor colombiano, el cual se manifiesta en un incesante devenir de vivencias cargadas de colorido, fiesta y música, vivencias que, muchas veces, se han visto empañadas por momentos de desgracia y delirio. Durante los años ochenta, hemos visto, con sus aciertos y desaciertos, Eréndira y Crónica de una muerte anunciada. Posteriormente, en 1999, aparece El coronel no tiene quien le escriba, una obra digna de admiración, sobre todo por sus brillantes actuaciones. Y después, ya en el siglo XXI, se han podido disfrutar, con un mejor apoyo tecnológico, aunque no sin muchas dificultades, adaptaciones basadas en El amor en los tiempos del cólera, Del amor y otros demonios y Memoria de mis putas tristes.
The historical situation is a key factor in the fiction and style of each writer and Gabriel García Márquez cannot be an exception. Thousand Days' War, the social, moral and economic crisis, in which Colombia plunged in those days, had a decisive impact on his works. Despite the violent events and in contrast to the suffering of famine, disease and death among people, Colombia presented a marked boom in the economy, an aspect reflected in the novels of the Colombian Nobel. Additionally, in The Incredible and Sad Tale of Innocent Eréndira and Her Heartless Grandmother, Chronicle of a Death Foretold, No One Writes to the Colonel, Love in the Time of Cholera, and Of Love and Other Demons, many aspects of the reality of the time in which the writer was living can be noticed: the restlessness and uncertainty in people’s lives, love, sexuality, fraternalism, politics, prostitution, religion, war, male chauvinism and the eternal struggle between rich and poor and between exploiters and exploited, among others. Numerous scholars like Bluestone, Elliot, Mc-Farlane, Cartmell and Whelehan have analyzed the evolution of film adaptations. Regarding García Márquez, he collaborated with renowned filmmakers such as Ripstein, Guerra, Rosi, and Newel, who tried to bring his intricate world, a place full of colors and music tarnished by moments of misfortune and delirium, to the Silver screen. Many of Márquez’s works have been adapted for the screen. During the eighties, Eréndira and Chronicle of a Death Foretold and, in 1999, No One Writes to the Colonel were adapted. In the 21st century, adaptations based on Love in the Time of Cholera, Of love and other demons and Memories of My Melancholy Whores appeared. Although some of these adaptations have been praised as audiovisual works of art, the commercial failure of the majority of them is due to the filmmakers’ lack of success in pleasing their audiences. Defending the film adaptations, it is necessary to strip the blame of the adaptation genre. Also, it should be mentioned that since both literature and cinema use two different languages, all adaptations must be assessed in several ways.
