Annotation:
Automatic music composition is a fast-moving field which, from roots in serialism, has developed techniques spanning subjects as diverse as biology, chaos theory and linguistic grammars. These algorithms have been applied to specific aspects of music creation, as well as live performances. However, these traditional approaches to generation are dedicated to the creation of music which is independent from any other driving medium, whereas human-composed music is most often written with a purpose or situation in mind. Furthermore, the process of composition is naturally hierarchical, whereas the use of a single algorithm renders it a monolithic task. In order to address these issues, a model should be able to encapsulate a sense of composer motivation whilst not relying on a single algorithm for the composition process. As such, this work describes a new framework with the ability to provide a means to generate music from film in a media-driven, distributed, manner. This includes the initial annotation of the media using our new OntoMedia ontology; the mapping of annotated information into parameters suitable for compositional algorithms; the design and implementation of an agent framework suitable for the distribution of multiple composing algorithms; and finally the creation of agents capable of handling the composition of musical elements such as rhythm and melody. In addition, a case study is included which demonstrates the stages of the composition process from media annotation to automatic music generation.

Annotation:
Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), a generative modelling technique most commonly used for image generation, have recently been applied to the task of fine art generation. Wasserstein GANs and GANHack techniques have not been applied in GANs that generate fine art, despite their showing improved GAN results in other applications. This thesis investigates whether Wasserstein GANs and GANHack extensions to DCGANs can improve the quality of DCGAN-based fine art generation. There is also no accepted method of evaluating or comparing GANs for fine art generation. DCGAN's, Wasserstein GANs' and GANHack techniques' outputs on a modest computational budget were quantitatively and qualitatively compared to see which techniques showed improvement over DCGAN. A method for evaluating computer-generated fine art, HEART, is proposed to cover both the qualities of good human-created fine art and the shortcomings of computer-created fine art, and to include the cognitive and emotional impact as well as the visual appearance. Prominent GAN quantitative evaluation techniques were used to compare sample images these GANs produced on the MNIST, CIFAR-10 and Imagenet-1K image data sets. These results were compared with sample images these GANs produced on the above data sets, as well as on art data sets. A pilot study of HEART was performed with 20 users. Wasserstein GANs achieved higher visual quality outputs than the baseline DCGAN, as did the use of GANHacks, on all the fine art data sets and are thus recommended for use in future work on GAN-based fine art generation. The study also demonstrated that HEART can be used for the evaluation and comparison of art GANs, providing comprehensive, objective quality assessments which can be substantiated in terms of emotional and cognitive impact as well as visual appearance.

It is intuitive that with new tools to analyze nature, new domains can be explored. Ultrafast electromagnetic fields are one of those tools, as they allow the probing of matter on new time scales, both for new applications and for basic research. However they are on their own right an important phenomenon that deserves to be analyzed, studied and probed. This work is divided in two parts one that deals with the generation and amplification of ultrashort pulses the second with the diagnostics of these lasers. We present a home-built tunable, narrow spectrum CPA amplification chain. We study the features of optical parametric amplification in several configurations. We made simulations regarding the amplification of a seed pulse that is angularly chirped, we also make some analytical calculations based on the same principle. Two mode-locked oscillators are presented one is a sub-12 fs laser oscillator used to produce the seed of the amplification chain, the second is a sub-6 fs laser oscillator. We describe the first laser oscillator in great detail. We devise and discuss models that can explain the parameters of the sub-cavity and the ability of these lasers to enter into mode-locking (ML), we compare the simulation results precise experimental measures made on the sub-6 fs oscillator. The measurement of ultrafast phenomena is also very challenging because their time scale is too short for common electronic devices. We have examined known measurements, such as third order cross correlations (TOCC) and interferometric second order autocorrelations (IAC) and obtained new analysis methods and new facts that broaden their usefulness. In particular, we have fully reconstructed the spectral phase of a pulse using an IAC trace and its power spectrum. We also prove that the existence of a TOCC plus an intensity autocorrelation is sufficient to retrieve the intensity profile of a pulse we present initial results on reconstruction algorithms, that might be able to do this with a high temporal contrast. We end this thesis with a study on simulation and implementation of a new configuration for single shot correlation measurements

Over the past years, many software industries have adapted the Software Product Line(SPL) as a paradigm that empowers software reuse by exploiting software similarities and managing variabil- ities to enable high-quality deliverables with a shorter time to market. Nevertheless, the lifecycle of SPL development often faces complex tasks. Creating a specific product from the product family is the main challenge. One way towards product realization is through configuration files. Still, manually creating configuration files for each product is an error-prone and time-consuming activ- ity. Therefore, this thesis proposes a variability modeling approach that shall enable an automatic generation of the configuration files for a single product. We conduct a thorough investigation on how to model variability to support automatic generation of the configuration files, introduce four essential decisions related to variability expression, features, constraints and configuration transformation, and present a number of alternative solutions to these decisions. Moreover, we identify evolution scenarios of SPL and evaluate the decisions concerning the scenarios. Finally, a validation of the approach in an industrial case study provided by Bombardier Transportation is presented.

This thesis is based on eight of the author's published works that challenge some of the disciplinary biases, methodological approaches, and deficiencies in first generation film musicology. Creating a balance between theoretical and practicebased approaches, these works are: Writing l. Mera, M. M)'chael Danna's The Ice Storm. Lanham, MD: Scarecrow Press, 2007. 2. Mera, M. and Bumand, D. Mera, M. The Goodbye Plane, dir. David Bartlett, Kewhaven Pictures, 2003. The term 'second-generation' in relation to film musicology was first coined by Robynn Stilwell to identify a productive shift away from the ideas of scholars such as Kathryn Kalinak and Claudia Gorbman. Gorbman's seminal text, Unheard Alelodies, for example, contained recurrent arguments about film music as a subservient element in a narrative system, an invisible discourse that 'functions to lull the spectator into being an untroublesome (less critical, less wary) viewing subject.' (1987, 15). More broadly first-generation film musicology was focused on mainstream Hollywood scoring, narrative causality, and the non-diegetic score, often at the expense of other elements of the soundtrack. The Critical Appraisal demonstrates how the author's published work positions itself in relation to and against this first-generation work, seeking to expand the field by employing new methodologies and exploring hitherto undervalued areas of study. The specific areas of examination are: (a) Film music beyond the mainstream Hollywood studio system ('Indiewood', Europe, Japan, Britain); (b) The use of silence, space and ambiguity as a scoring approach and the means by which this empowers the audience, demanding their active engagement with the filmic text, and; (c) Methods of collaboration and communication and their effect on compositional process and product, with a particular focus on the temp-track. As a practising film composer, the author has a unique perspective from which to explore this subject area. In particular, political context, industrial and collaborative practice, and technological methods are interrogated in a manner that is borne out of personal experience. The relationship between the published written and composed texts, therefore, challenges idealistic and mythologized notions of film music that fail to reflect how political structures and creativity interact. The Critical Appraisal also suggests some future directions for study in a rapidly progressing and vibrant field of study.

My body of work is concerned with the constructed promise of telecommunication - that is, the promise to connect people all over the world via telephone lines, computer networks and, most recently, satellite signals. The development of and access to networked systems has brought about this "utopian promise" (Mitchell 2005: 305), an ideal of instant connectivity that allows a user to be in contact with others through technological devices over vast distances. Connectivity supposedly enables users to develop and sustain relationships on the Internet. However, the question arises whether telecommunication technologies are living up to their promise. My title, Reprocessing Inte/ference: An artistic exploration of the visual material generated by inte/terence, refers to the concepts pertaining to this promise and also to the failure of the promise, focusing on the notions of distance and interference. It further encapsulates my working method, a process of degrading and filtering both my own and found footage.

At the same time I enjoy the ease and the comforts that it allows us. This is one of the problems with our generation; we do not take a stand either way because we are so dependent on consumerism. The purpose of this study was to design and test five SNP markers in an inbred chicken cross between Red Junglefowl and domestic White Leghorn of the 8th generation. The markers lie in a region affecting the tonic immobility behaviour which differs significantly between the two species. The markers could be identified by usage of PCR and pyrosequencing. The data obtained were further used in a small scale quantitative trait locus (QTL) analysis. QTL analysis is a statistical method to link phenotypic traits to genotypic data. Four out of five markers could be genotypes and thereby, made it possible to proceed with the QTL analysis. The results showed that there is no QTL associated with the markers identified. The two flanking markers were closest to a significant difference between genotypes and it is therefore a possibility that a QTL lies close further down or up the searched region. From the line map it is indicated that there is little recombination in the marker region.

Annotation:
This project examined the story generations of five children with language impairment (LI) between the ages of 5;11 and 10;1 across the treatment sessions of a narrative-based intervention program designed to improve social communication. These stories were analyzed to find whether the participants would approach the task by describing the stimulus pictures or if their stories would reflect an episodic structure containing cause and effect relationships. Additionally, the stories were analyzed for inclusion of emotion words to discern the participants' awareness of the characters' emotions. There was a high degree of variability in the participants' performance; however, the majority of the stories were composed of picture descriptions, and most of the participants generated short stories with few episodic elements in response to the probes over the course of treatment. In terms of emotion word use, two of the participants increased their use of emotion words in later sessions. Overall the participants' performance on the story generation probe did not reflect their performance in other treatment tasks including shared book readings, story enactments, and journal writing. This was likely due to their disinterest or fatigue in the story generation task and stimuli, as well as their continued need for the clinician modeling that was present in the other treatment tasks. Future research is needed to determine effective treatments that help school-aged children with LI recognize goal-directed behavior and emotional content in stories.

Topic modeling is an effective tool for analyzing the thematic content of large collections of text. However, traditional probabilistic topic modeling is limited to a small number of topics (typically no more than hundreds). We introduce fine-grained topic models, which have large numbers of nuanced and specific topics. We demonstrate that fine-grained topic models enable use cases not currently possible with current topic modeling techniques, including an automatic cross-referencing task in which short passages of text are linked to other topically related passages. We do so by leveraging anchor methods, a recent class of topic model based on non-negative matrix factorization in which each topic is anchored by a single word. We explore extensions of the anchor algorithm, including tandem anchors, which relaxes the restriction that anchors be formed of single words. By doing so, we are able to produce anchor-based topic models with thousands of fine-grained topics. We also develop metrics for evaluating token level topic assignments and use those metrics to improve the accuracy of fine-grained topic models.

This thesis investigates the impact of Superflat theory and practice of the artist and curator, Takashi Murakami. The thesis aims to analyse how contemporary transnational artistic activity functions via the work of Murakami and Superflat artists, including Chiho Aoshima and Aya Takano. From the blockbuster group exhibition, Super Flat, curated by Murakami, which debuted in the United States in 2001 at the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, to the 2007-2009 ©MURAKAMI retrospective traveling from Los Angeles to Brooklyn then Frankfurt to Bilbao, the synthesis of ideas is showing the way to unprecedented directions in contemporary art. This investigation also links Murakami’s work to that of American Pop artists Andy Warhol and Jeff Koons and explores how Superflat art functions within and contributes to the already distorted area between parallel structures, such as high and low, fine art and commercial production, or East and West. When peeling back the layers of Superflat, there is a rich, beautiful and violent history. Recognising the fusion of tradition and technology, my research explores how Superflat artists are achieving international success by engaging in multiple outlets of creative expression and collaboration in the continuing context of globalisation and a consumer-driven art market. Images of anxiety and destruction are disguised as playful and marketable characters, and three-dimensional animation figures become cultural icons. Superflat explores the simulated, sensuous, colourful and obsessive “realities” that we inhabit on a global scale and captures a twenty-first century aesthetic. With reference to the representation of violence and disaster in art and popular culture, contemporary Japan’s construction of national identity and the postwar “Americanization” of Japan, this thesis examines how the layering of ideas via cross-cultural exchange produces a new form of hybrid and hyper Pop art.

Solar energy has come to the forefront as a scalable and largely underutilized renewable energy resource. The current cost of solar electricity, namely from photovoltaics, along with other logistics factors, has prevented the widespread adaptation of the technology. A key determinant of efficiency and cost for a solar cell is the current collector grid. This work presents the Collimated Aerosol Beam Direct Write (CAB-DW) system as a non-contact printing method that can achieve current collector grid finger widths of less than 10 ?m which are amenable to decreasing both resistive and optical losses. The ability to produce high aspect ratio grid fingers, and deposit optimized grid structures on high efficiency SHJ solar cells using silver nanoparticle inks is also demonstrated. A decrease in shadowing and via profile modification of the grid fingers is presented, along with a study of aging and degradation of electrical properties within silver nanoparticle inks.

Annotation:
This thesis explores the process of translating traditional cinematic lighting into the digital realm by understanding distinctly different lighting styles of three Directors of Photography. These Directors of Photography are Conrad Hall, Gregg Toland, and Zhao Fei. Digital lighting studies representative of the work of each Director of Photography were created. In these studies, the lighting in scenes done by each Director of Photography was digitally mimicked. As a result, the lighting studies provided valuable insight into the approaches of these masters of light. An animation was created to display a scene lit in the three lighting styles of each Director of Photography. The process, learned from the lighting studies, of creating three different lighting styles representative of each Director of Photography was applied to the final animation. The analysis and lighting studies of each Directors' of Photography style expedited the process of lighting the final animation in each different style. As a result, a more complex environment was effectively lit in three different cinematic styles with animated light.

The propagation of fire generated smoke into a shipboard space with a geometric interference has been modeled using commercial software from the Computational Fluid Dynamics Research Corporation (CFDRC). This study was based on the dimensions of compartment 01-163-2-L and the installed ladder aboard an Arleigh Burke Class Flight IIIA Destroyer. A test model was run which validated the hindrance of fluid flow by a geometric interference. Smoke propagation scenarios were run in the shipboard compartment model. The results of the first scenario showed that smoke propagation is limited by the geometric interference. The results of the second scenario showed that smoke that is directed vertically is diverted by the geometric interference. The overall goal of this study is to show that computational fluid dynamics software can successfully model smoke propagation in shipboard spaces with a geometric interference.

This thesis report presents a new design of a synchronization unit for high power impulse magnetron sputtering (HiPIMS) applications used for depositing thin films. The proposed system is composed of two major hardware parts: a microcontroller unit (MCU) and a field-programmable gate array (FPGA). The control range of the new system is increased by at least ten times compared to existing synchronization unit designed by Ionautics AB.In order to verify the system and benchmark its innovations, several batches of the thin film have been deposited using the new technology. It is shown that HiPIMS with synchronized pulsed substrate bias can effectively improve coating performance. Pulsed substrate bias with user-defined pulse width and delay time is possible to use in the new control mode proposed by this master thesis work; Bias mode. As a result, this master thesis work enables users to flexibly control the HiPIMS processes.
