Twenty-three adult patients with Morton's neuroma of one foot were randomized to receive in-shoe orthoses made from a hard, compressed, felt material that would either pronate or supinate both feet. The response of the neuroma pain was measured using subjective visual analogue scales, an objective examination, and the MACTAR patient-specific measure of maximal function. The development of any other lower limb symptoms was also recorded. The pain associated with Morton's neuroma was not significantly altered by changing the position of the foot with the compressed felt orthosis. Forcibly pronating the foot did not produce a significant incidence of lower limb symptoms in the short term.

In this work, using the example of the synthesis of nanoparticles of the mutual FePt system, obtained in an aqueous medium by the method of co-reduction of solutions of metal precursors, the effect of reducing agents is considered: an alkaline solution of hydrazine hydrate and sodium tetrahydroborate in combination with a stabilizer of sodium-potassium tartrate. The main characteristics of the obtained nanosized particles of the iron-platinum system were studied by means of a complex of physicochemical methods of analysis. The shape and morphology of the obtained nanosized particles were studied by transmission electron microscopy, phase analysis and X-ray structural parameters – by X-ray diffraction methods. It was approached to reveal the dependence of the particle size on the type of reducing agent used. It was found that nanosized FePt particles obtained with different reducing agents have similar physicochemical characteristics. The use of sodium tetrahydroborate, in the presence of a stabilizer sodium-potassium tartrate, allowed to obtain more dispersed particles with a size of 14.3±2.1 nm. FePt nanoparticles reduced by hydrazine hydrate were characterized by large sizes of 16.7±4.0 nm, and the particles form large dense agglomerates. Chemical analysis showed that when reducing with sodium tetrahydroborate, the target product contained 0.4 mol. % boron. When reducing FePt nanoparticles with hydrazine hydrate, it was found that the target product was contaminated with iron oxide, which was also confirmed by X-ray phase analysis. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the iron-platinum nanosystem was represented by a solid-solution phase with a face-centred cubic lattice. The parameters of the crystal lattice were estimated, 3.908 Å and 3.894 Å, respectively, for FePt nanoparticles obtained using NaBH4 and N2H4∙H2O.

Many efforts to improve science teaching in higher education focus on a few faculty members at an institution at a time, with limited published evidence on attempts to engage faculty across entire departments. We created a long-term, department-wide collaborative professional development program, Biology Faculty Explorations in Scientific Teaching (Biology FEST). Across 3 years of Biology FEST, 89% of the department’s faculty completed a weeklong scientific teaching institute, and 83% of eligible instructors participated in additional semester-long follow-up programs. A semester after institute completion, the majority of Biology FEST alumni reported adding active learning to their courses. These instructor self-reports were corroborated by audio analysis of classroom noise and surveys of students in biology courses on the frequency of active-learning techniques used in classes taught by Biology FEST alumni and nonalumni. Three years after Biology FEST launched, faculty participants overwhelmingly reported that their teaching was positively affected. Unexpectedly, most respondents also believed that they had improved relationships with departmental colleagues and felt a greater sense of belonging to the department. Overall, our results indicate that biology department–wide collaborative efforts to develop scientific teaching skills can indeed attract large numbers of faculty, spark widespread change in teaching practices, and improve departmental relations.

The latest methods in data acquisition provide engineers with stronger support than ever to make more informed decisions. Data acquisition is the process of making repetitive, timed measurements of multiple signal sources. The robotics team at the Oak Ridge National Laboratories builds a computerized model of robotic parts, such as robotic arm, and then runs a series of data acquisition tests on a prototype to determine how the arm will move. The robotic arm was constructed after engineers ran data acquisition tests on a prototype to learn how it would react to forces from the arm and from the human controlling the robot. Those results were considered when programming the robotic arm. Some companies use data acquisition methods to determine if it makes economic sense to implement a project. Data acquisition boards measure signals like friction, as measured here, and provide feedback that appears as numbers and wave measurements on the computer screen. Results can be downloaded to another software package, which displays the hard data as waves or graphs for analysis.
