The static control of architectural monuments has some important and impressive applications in topographical methodologies. Two interesting examples of the topographic control methods concern the very famous Byzantine S. Marco Basilica in Venice and the Cathedral of Como, situated in the North of Italy. The measurements carried out in the static control field are in reference to the: lengths variation, transversal variation according to a specific direction and height variation. In the paper, one can find the description of the instruments and of the methodologies employed in the static control.

Abstract. This paper aims at presenting the recording and modelling work developed in the framework of restoration and conservation activities for the Basilica di San Giacomo in Como, Italy, whose construction started in the 11th century. The project started in 2022 and involved the application of the Historical Building Information Model (HBIM) methodology through a Scan-to-BIM approach was assessed. High-detailed 3D survey techniques were used to acquire the specific shape of the church and annexed buildings. Then, through different modelling strategies, the HBIM environment allowed the representation of all the architectural elements. The purpose of this model is to have essential support to plan the restoration activities and to give the different experts involved a single three-dimensional tool for managing all the information during the development of the construction works. The possibility to update the model over time with geometric and non-geometric information will provide a powerful tool also for other future activities, such as the installation of a monitoring system that could reveal the displacements of bearing elements of the church.

Two engineering applications of the Distinct Element Method to the analysis of historic masonries are presented. In particular, the commercial software UDEC, which implements DEM in a variety of engineering problems, is here used to analyze the Águas Livres aqueduct in Lisbon (Portugal) and multi-leaf masonry arch-tympana carrying systems of a basilica in Como (Italy). When dealing with the aqueduct, the most important portion of the structure is modeled and loaded with some accelerograms to evaluate its seismic vulnerability as well as the most critical zones. The second example analyzes the arch-tympana carrying system of a church in Italy. They present an unusual building technology, relying into a multiple-leaf arch, and a tympanum, made by a mixture of bad quality mortar and small stones. Again the structure is discretized into distinct elements and the load carrying capacity under dynamic excitation is evaluated, discussing the role played by the infill.

No chapter on Italian science could be complete without mentioning Galileo whose works mark the beginning of modern science. In Rome, we visit Campo de' Fiori to contemplate the hooded statue of Giordano Bruno who was burned at the stake for holding views akin to those of Galileo. Galileo sites in Pisa are followed by those in Florence including the Galileo Museum and his tomb in the Basilica di Santa Croce. Next, we discuss Alessandro Volta's background, his correspondence with Ben Franklin, his skepticism regarding Luigi Galvani's “animal electricity”, and the construction of his “voltaic piles”, considered to be the first batteries. In the scenic lake-side city of Como we explore the myriad Volta landmarks with a special emphasis on the Tempio Voltiano, a magnificent neoclassical temple. At the University of Pavia, we visit the Volta Cabinet. Finally, we discuss Stanislao Cannizzaro's promotion of Amedeo Avogadro's Hypothesis at the first International Chemical Congress held in Karlsruhe, Germany in 1860. Several Avogadro sites in Vercelli, the site of the Congress in Karlsruhe and several Cannizzaro sites including The Museum of Science “Primo Levi” in Rome are described.
