Abstract In this paper, we discuss a software architecture, which has been developed for the needs of the System for Intelligent Maritime Monitoring (SIMMO). The system bases on the state-of-the-art information fusion and intelligence analysis techniques, which generates an enhanced Recognized Maritime Picture and thus supports situation analysis and decision- making. The SIMMO system aims to automatically fuse an up-to-date maritime data from Automatic Identification System (AIS) and open Internet sources. Based on collected data, data analysis is performed to detect suspicious vessels. Functionality of the system is realized in a number of different modules (web crawlers, data fusion, anomaly detection, visualization modules) that share the AIS and external data stored in the system’s database. The aim of this article is to demonstrate how external information can be leveraged in maritime awareness system and what software solutions are necessary. A working system is presented as a proof of concept.

Evidence from functional neuroimaging studies on resting state suggests that there are two distinct anticorrelated cortical systems that mediate conscious awareness: an “extrinsic” system that encompasses lateral fronto-parietal areas and has been linked with processes of external input (external awareness), and an “intrinsic” system which encompasses mainly medial brain areas and has been associated with internal processes (internal awareness). The aim of our study was to explore the neural correlates of resting state by providing behavioral and neuroimaging data from healthy volunteers. With no a priori assumptions, we first determined behaviorally the relationship between external and internal awareness in 31 subjects. We found a significant anticorrelation between external and internal awareness with a mean switching frequency of 0.05 Hz (range: 0.01–0.1 Hz). Interestingly, this frequency is similar to BOLD fMRI slow oscillations. We then evaluated 22 healthy volunteers in an fMRI paradigm looking for brain areas where BOLD activity correlated with “internal” and “external” scores. Activation of precuneus/posterior cingulate, anterior cingulate/mesiofrontal cortices, and parahippocampal areas (“intrinsic system”) was linearly linked to intensity of internal awareness, whereas activation of lateral fronto-parietal cortices (“extrinsic system”) was linearly associated with intensity of external awareness.

We define situation awareness (SA) as adaptive, externally directed consciousness. This definition dispels the artificial and contentious division evident in the literature, according to which SA is either exclusively knowledge or exclusively process. This misdirected rivalry has more to do with general perspectives on the study of human behavior than with SA itself. Through defining SA as an aspect of consciousness, we hope to clarify two key issues. (1) The source of goals with respect to SA is a normative arbiter in the task environment; that is, the behavior that SA generates must be directed at an external goal. (2) SA is the invariant at the core of the agent's perception-action cycle that supports skilled performance; that is, relationships among factors or dimensions in the environment determine what the agent must know and do to achieve the goals specified by the external arbiter. We introduce a construct we call the risk space to represent the invariant relations in the environment that enable the agent to adapt to novel situations and to attain prespecified goals. We articulate this concept of a risk space through use of a specific example in commercial aircraft operations. The risk space structures information about the physical airspace in a manner that captures the momentary knowledge that drives action and that satisfies the goals and performance criteria for safe and efficient flight. We note that the risk space may be generalized to many different means of navigation.

Purpose: is to form a comprehensive view of economic legal awareness as the most important factor in the progressive development of the domestic economy and the pledge of the further construction of the rule of law in Russia. Methods: the research is based on the principles of systemic, theoretical-cognitive, institutional, instrumental and interdisciplinary approaches, on the idea of the correlation and interaction of subjective and objective factors in social processes accepted in social science, with relative independence of the subject. Which is devoted to the following tasks: To characterize the legal awareness as a phenomenon and disclose the content of economic legal awareness; To investigate the interaction of the economic legal awareness of modern Russians with regard to the economic task of raising real incomes of citizens; To uncover the legal consciousness of modern Russian business, as the main actor of solving the problem of the Russian Federation becoming one of the five largest economies in the world; To outline the parameters of the influence of economic legal awareness on the creation of a high-performance export-oriented sector in the basic sectors of the economy, developing on the basis of modern technologies and provided with highly qualified personnel. Results: economic legal awareness should be understood as a process and result of the individual's comprehension and evaluation of his legal position in the economy. It is personal and socially conditioned. The state economic policy of Russia has applied specifics, which puts barriers on the way of intensive economic development. The modern Russian in most cases is economically active only for earning, for which he is ready to get a good education and work hard. At the same time, it easily enough goes on minor violations of the law, such as work, without registration for a higher salary or obtaining a loan, which certainly will not be returned in full. At the same time, Russian business, basically, works in the legal field.Сonclusions and relevance: it can be stated that the economic legal awareness of Russians, like the legal awareness in general, is situational in nature, where the individual's desires, needs and interests become a yardstick, for the implementation of which he is ready to violate the law. Overcome this situation can only complex and systematic activity of government bodies, institutions of civil society and the Russian society to solve the economic problems of progressive development facing it, including through legal education and enlightenment.

One very active research tradition in the field of second language acquisition (SLA) attempts to establish causal relationships between environmental factors and learning. These include the type and quantity of input, instruction and feedback, and the interactional context of learning (Larsen-Freeman and Long 1991). A second very influential line of research and theory in SLA that came to fruition during the 1980s investigates the possible role of universal grammar (UG) in SLA (Eubank 1991b, White 1989). In the Chomskyan tradition, UG refers not to properties of language as the external object of learning but to innate properties of mind that direct the course of primary language acquisition. One question asked within this tradition has been whether or not second language learners still “have access” to UG, but it is assumed that UG principles are not accessible to learner awareness for any kind of conscious analysis of input. It is possible that SLA is the result of UG (a deep internal factor) acting upon input (an external factor), as proposed by White (1989), but what seems to be left out of such an account is the role of the learner's conscious mental processes.

A trend of environmental consciousness is developing for some years in every market and sometimes gave birth to a sub-market such as the organic-cosmetic market. This market represents an important part of cosmetics in general and major companies can be identified. Marketers have noticed this trend and sometimes use it into their communication strategy but it still has to be studied properly in order to determine its impact on the purchasing behavior of consumers and their perception of the brand. Indeed, we think that this environmental consciousness can challenge the balance between Brand Image and Brand Awareness in this market.   This paper is aiming to explore the impact of this specific trend on the organic-cosmetic market and studies its influence over the Brand Knowledge management, more precisely the relationship between Brand Image and Brand Awareness. In that goal, we chose to make interviews in front of the shops of two companies interacting on this market: The Body Shop and L’Occitane en Provence. Combined with data collected from previous research into a deductive approach, it led us to some general conclusion concerning the level of Brand Image and Awareness of those companies, their relationship and the impact of environmental consciousness on this relationship.   We concluded from those results that the brand L’Occitane en Provence had a slightly lower Brand Awareness than its competitor but its customers had a more important environmental consciousness that led them to this company due to its values and specific type of product. We can then conclude that on such markets impacted with this type of external factor, if the company implements it in its communication strategy or its core values, then its need for Brand Awareness is lower. One can now wonder if this trend in particular or any other external factor can be used in other markets on the same way.

As digitalization has evolved over the years, the need for automating procedures for faster results has become stronger. Marketing automation is a software that automates an organization’s marketing activities. Its purpose is to deliver a firm’s personalized messages to the existing and potential customers. Consequently, marketing automation is closely related to content marketing which’s main attribute is to raise brand awareness, and having a higher brand awareness can ultimately affect the buying decision. It has been discovered that there is a lack of research in the existing literature about marketing automation and more specifically in how marketing automation can affect the buying decision by raising brand awareness. Therefore, this thesis aims to examine how marketing automation affects the buying decision through brand awareness and external branding. The theory was outlined by six concepts which were marketing automation, external branding, brand communication, brand awareness, and buying decisions. These concepts led the authors to create six different hypotheses in order to find a link between them.  The data were collected through a self-completion questionnaire, therefore a quantitative study with an exploratory purpose was conducted. The results from the 118 respondents of the questionnaire suggest that marketing automation influences the organizational buying decision by enhancing brand awareness. Moreover, marketing automation has a positive impact on external branding which also has a positive effect on the buying decision. Concludingly, this suggests that marketing automation does positively affect the B2B buying decision through brand awareness and external branding.

The Swedish fashion industry is highly competitive and it is important for smaller fashionbrands in the phase of growth to have a strong brand and image in order to better distinguishthe brand and the products from the mainstream. In a smaller fashion company, issuesregarding the brand might easily be overlooked or not prioritized at all due to limitations inbudget or competence missing in the company for this type of activities. The external brandprocess has been presented as a realistic alternative for the small fashion brand to strengthentheir image by letting their surrounding external industry network influence the brand andgetting greater control in its growth. The industry network includes media, government andnon-government organizations to closer actors such as retailers, PR-agencies and suppliers. The purpose of this thesis project is, from a branding perspective; to describe what power theexternal actors has on SMEs opportunities to grow. Through a case study on the small fashioncompany Stylein the problem is exemplified and highlighted in a clearer context. In order toillustrate all aspects of the external actors' influence on the brand, its development andgrowth, a triangulated research method has been chosen as strategy consisting of a mix ofinterviews with retail wholesalers and industry experts, a document analysis and mail surveyto media actors. The result of the external actors' impact has been identified to three main effects: directincreased sales, increased brand awareness and image creation. Which of the three effects thatthe company will receive depends on the image the brand succeed to establish in the minds ofthe various powerful actors in the external network.

Consciousness can be divided into two major components: arousal and awareness. Awareness encompasses self-awareness and external awareness. Three core cerebral networks have been described. The default mode network is involved in self-related mental activity, and is internally-mediated. The central executive network is involved in externally-driven cognitive functions. The salience network is involved in the detection of salient internal and external stimuli, and plays a causal role in switching between the default mode and the central executive networks, thus mediating attention to internal and external worlds, respectively.Following a coma, some patients are left with chronic disorders of consciousness, either with unresponsive wakefulness syndrome, or in minimally conscious state. The unresponsive wakefulness syndrome is characterised by the absence of signs of awareness. The minimally conscious state is associated with minimal behavioural evidence of awareness, like visual pursuit or simple command following. The level of awareness can be underestimated by clinical assessment, owing to frequent motor and cognitive associated disorders. This thesis aims at improving awareness assessment via the detection of potential residual covert abilities, at characterising neural correlates of consciousness disorders, and at studying the effects of deep brain stimulation on conscious behaviour in patients with chronic disorders of consciousness. For the purpose of enhancing awareness detection in these non-communicative patients, we proposed a functional MRI protocol with graduated emotional charge to detect potential residual covert language-related behaviour. We then investigated the functional connectivity at rest of subcortical structures and cortical networks involved in internal and external awareness, in a group of thirteen patients with chronic disorders of consciousness. We highlighted a disruption of the functional connections between the salience and the default mode networks, as well as with the thalami and pallidums. We proposed beforehand a method to improve the automatic segmentation of these subcortical structures. Finally, we conducted a low frequency deep brain stimulation study in five patients with chronic disorders of consciousness, by dual pallido-thalamic targeting. Two patients showed improved conscious behaviour following stimulation, associated with an increase of metabolism in cortical regions involved in internal awareness

The non-interest and profit-loss sharing schemes of Islamic finance (IF) are attracting increasing global attention. Despite exposure to the similar opportunities as other Western countries that have adopted the financial business model there is little evidence of Islamic finance windows operating in the conventional institutions in Canada. This thesis takes a qualitative approach to bring the issue forward in Canadian social science literature by exploring the perceived challenges to, and the potential of, the development of IF offerings with a focus on factors affecting the supply and management decisions in the industry. The study used an inductive approach with archival data and critical survey of literature to arrive at the hypotheses surrounding the challenges. These were tested deductively by semi-structured interviews and panel discussions both in Canada and the US on a sample of senior officials involved in both IF and conventional financial institutions. Using a thematic analysis the study arrived at findings supporting the hypotheses related to awareness, regulation, management intent and internal resources. In the external environment, factors affecting strategic decision on offering IF services are mainly due to regulation, lack of awareness, even among Muslim communities, or misgivings about Sha’riah authenticity. Internally, highly customized IT infrastructures, lack of funds and foreign investment make it unfeasible. Management interest when proposed with the concept is high but not in a top-down manner and there is an overall uncertainty avoidance culture and little proactivity with market research. Access to specific Sha’riah knowledge is not considered a hurdle anymore. It is apparent that investments in Sha’riah compliant stocks would be easiest to set up. Mortgage structures can be affected by the capital market structure, even if not tax structures. Knowledge on this can have implications for banks seeking to expand their investment portfolios and aid government policies.

Relationship marketing is a marketing theory that has gathered much focus in the marketing research area lately. The core idea of relationship marketing is to retain the existing customers of a company by establishing long-time relationships with them. The theory of brand equity is a well-known theory on brand development that deals with issues such as customer’s perceptions and the brand meaning. The main purpose of this thesis is to gain deeper understanding of what kind of role the front-line employees in terms of part-time marketers, have on the enhancing of Liseberg´s brand equity. Liseberg holds a special position for the citizens of Gothenburg, and as the biggest amusement park in the Nordic are with 3.1 million visitors in 2014, we argue that theories like relationship marketing and brand equity could be of importance for Liseberg to maintain their position in the minds of their customers. We have also been able to identify a research gap. We discovered that research about the role of part-time marketers in relation to brand equity is relatively scarce. Even more specifically, we have not been able to find studies regarding the role of part-time marketers in the enhancing of the brand equity of an amusement park. We have conducted a qualitative study in order to accomplish the purpose of our thesis. In our study, we conducted nine semi-structured interviews with managers, front-line employees and customers of Liseberg. The interviews helped us gain a deeper understanding on how the role of the front-line employees as part-time marketers was perceived both internally and externally in Liseberg. Data from different customer reports were also provided to us from Liseberg. From our qualitative studies as well as from the data provided by Liseberg, we can conclude that the role of the part-time marketers was perceived differently from the customer’s point of view, compared to what managers and front-line employees thought. Nevertheless according to our findings, we can conclude that part-time marketers have a very important role in the enhancing of Liseberg´s brand equity. Finally we have also made practical recommendations for the management of Liseberg regarding on how to work with the part-time marketer’s concept in mind to improve Liseberg´s brand equity.

The Awareness of the Internal and External Public towards Stella Maris Ursuline High School’s Public Relations Abstract The research aims to discuss firstly whether the internal and external public are aware of the school’s public relations activities and secondly whether there is any vast difference in the awareness between them towards Stella Maris Ursuline High School’s public relations strategies. It further proposes conclusions and suggestions based on the research results. The methodology adopted for the research is questionnaires and analyses. The study first began with the literature review, which was later used as an academic foundation to compose the first draft of the questionnaires. During the process of survey design, several scholars and experts in the specific field were invited to contribute and help evaluate the effectiveness of the questionnaires. Then the survey was distributed to the target audiences – the internal public: staff teachers/employees and students and the external public: parents and junior high school teachers – for gathering data on how well aware the target audiences are of any public relations activities. The total number of the questionnaires is 512 copies, with valid returns of 381 copies, at a return rate of 74%. After processing any related data and statistics, the results are as follows: Ⅰ. On the level of awareness the target audiences show towards Stella Maris Ursuline High School’s public relations activities 1. A highly-aware situation (with an average figure higher than 4): staff teachers/employees of the surveyed school takes up 39%, and the students, 3%, whereas the parents and junior high school teachers 0%. 2. A moderately-aware situation (with an average figure between 3.5 to 4): the junior high school teachers contribute 39%, staff teachers/employees, 37%, the students, 25%, and the parents 15%. 3. A low-aware situation (with an average figure lower than 3.5): the parents occupy a good 85%, followed by the students, 72%, the junior high school teachers, 53%, and staff teachers/employees 24%. 4. The research results reveal a fact that among the target audiences, the staff teachers/employees of Stella Maris Ursuline High School are oftentimes highly-aware of any public relations activities held by the school, while the awareness of the parents is the lowest. Ⅱ. An analysis on the differentiated awareness between the staff teachers/employees and the students, the parents and the junior high school teachers respectively. The research results show that the differentiation between the staff teachers/employees and the parents is the highest, with a noticeable margin of 100%, which concludes a vast difference of awareness of the two parties on perceiving the school’s public relations strategies. A margin of 94% between the staff teachers/employees and the students comes in second. It is followed by a margin of 60% between the staff teachers/employees and the junior high school teachers, which indicates the lest difference of awareness towards the school’s public relations activities. Based on the conclusions above, several suggestions are made to shorten any margin of awareness towards school public relations: 1. To increase publicity, it is an effective means to add sections, such as the bulletin board to the school’s website for generating opinions from the public. 2. To provide a multi-communicative channel. 3. When making decisions, include perspectives and opinions from the staff teachers/employees, the students and the parents for perfecting a plan. 4. For any school regulation revision, involve teachers and students’ viewpoints with conditions. 5. Through curriculum and activities, encourage students to speak out their minds. 6. The aids of orientation for students offered by the staff teachers/employees shall be evaluated according to their actual needs. 7. Emphasize a two-way communication between teachers and students or teachers and parents. 8. Adopt a multiple approach of presentation when publicizing to the related public for deepening their impressions. 9. Rationally adjust the workload of the teachers for further enhancing the quality of teaching. 10. Build any useful facilities at the school gates where the public usually gather for successfully conveying important school messages. 11. Involve any valuable opinions from the parents through survey for future reference. Key words: the related public, public relations

Annotation:
Critical care nurses experience stressful situations in their daily working environments. The question arises for nurses: are there adequate support systems in the critical care environment and what are critical care nurses doing to mantain their own health and well-being. Facilitating conscious awareness among critical care nurses could enhance their resiliency and their hardiness, strengthening their coping capacities in stressful working situations. The contextual framework adopted for this research was the Neuman Systems Model. A qualitative research approach (exploratory, descriptive and contextual) was used to explore and describe the stress experienced by critical care nurses. Focus group interviews were conducted with critical care nurses and individual interviews with nurse managers. The results revealed their perceptions and experiences about the effects of stress in the critical care environment, as well as some of their coping strategies. Raising critical care nurses' levels of conscious awareness about their coping strategies with stressful events in their daily working lives, could enhance their resiliency and hardiness, enabling them to continue working effectively in stressful environments. This could enhance the general well-being of individual critical care nurses, the nursing care rendered to critically ill patients, and save money for the health care services by reducing turnover rates among critical care nurses.

Under the recent drastic changes and impacts from financial institutions, bank employees are the emerging groups who suffer the greatest degree of threats. Using bank employees throughout Tainan and Kaohsiung areas as the study sample, 359 valid questions were collected. The empirical results indicated the following: 1.The higher the individual awareness of external environment change, the higher the job insecurity; 2.Human resource practices are significantly related to job insecurity; 3.The higher the competencies, the lower the job insecurity; 4.Moderating effects of compencies were found in the relationship between HR responsive practices and job insecurity. Conclusions, recommendations, as well as limitations were also addressed in accordance with the results.

What are the implications of pervasive presence of multisensory interactions for bodily awareness? It has been assumed that bodily experiences exclusively result from bodily senses, with no influence from external senses, but vision is actually required to maximize the veridical perception of the body. Consequently, bodily experiences in those who have never seen are of a different kind to the way one normally experiences one’s body. Whether or not one is currently seeing one’s body, vision plays an essential role in delineating the boundaries of the body, in locating our body parts in space and in bridging the gap between what happens on the skin and what happens in the external world. In this sense, the bodily experiences of the sighted (or those who were once sighted) can be said to be constitutively multimodal.

This chapter looks at the theory of knowledge of Bhartṛhari (c.5th cent.), the philosopher of language and grammarian, from the angle of perception and the awareness of oneself in the world. It is argued that, even though these topics are not systematically treated in Bhartṛhari’s work, in the context of his epistemology, which emphasizes the centrality of language, it is of crucial importance to show how language-based categories operate even in perception. After a brief introduction dealing with the role of grammar in the intellectual history of ancient India and Bhartṛhari’s place in the Pāṇinian tradition, the chapter examines a number of passages from his work that touch upon perception, its relation to the body, its intrinsic limitations in apprehending external objects, and the role of the mind in selecting and organizing the sense data, even when these remain at the periphery of individual awareness.

In modern anaesthesia practice, hypnotic drugs, opioids, and neuromuscular blocking agents (NMBAs) are combined. The introduction of NMBAs in particular substantially increased the risk of awareness and recall during general anaesthesia. Hypnotic drugs such as propofol and volatile anaesthetics act through GABAA receptors and have typical effects on the electroencephalogram (EEG). During increasing concentrations of these pharmaceuticals, the EEG desynchronization is followed by gradual synchronization, slowing frequency, and increasing amplitude of EEG, thereafter EEG suppressions (burst suppression), and, finally, isoelectric EEG. Hypnotic depth monitors such as the Bispectral Index™, Entropy™, and Narcotrend® are based on quantitative EEG analysis and translate these changes into numbers between 100 and 0. Although they are good predictors of wakefulness and deep anaesthesia, their usefulness in prevention of awareness and recall has been challenged, especially when inhalation anaesthetics are used. External and patient-related artifacts such as epileptiform discharges and frontal electromyography (EMG) affect the signal so their readings need careful interpretation. Their use is recommended in patients at increased risk of awareness and recall and in patients under total intravenous anaesthesia. Monitors of analgesia and nociception are not established in clinical practice but mostly remain experimental although some are commercially available. Some use EEG changes induced by noxious stimulation (EEG arousal) or quantify the frontal EMG in relation to EEG, while others are based on the sympathoadrenergic stress response. Various other devices are also discussed in this chapter.

The Introduction explains the overall project and focuses on the question ‘What is it to be human?’. Rationality, language, self-awareness, self-knowledge, and moral sense have been indicated as the distinctive features of being human. In this book, I will build on and develop the assumption that to be human means to be in dialogue. Dialogue is a unitary concept that will guide me in attempting to address in a coherent way three essential issues for clinical practice: ‘What is a human being?’, ‘What is mental pathology?’, and ‘What is care?’. I will argue that to be human means to be in dialogue with alterity, that mental pathology is the outcome of a crisis of one’s dialogue with alterity, and that care is a method wherein dialogues take place whose aim is to re-enact interrupted dialogue with alterity within oneself and with the external world.

This chapter argues for Phenomenal Rationalism about perceptual experiences: the claim that our basic awareness of reasons for perceptual belief is phenomenal and non-conceptual. The main idea is that, from the inside, perceptual experiences seem to be reason-giving insofar as they seem to be relations to, and determined by, external objects and their features. The argumentation centres partly on the claim that assuming the phenomenal presence of the relationality and determination of perceptual experiences provides the best explanation of why so many good philosophers were convinced of the soundness of the argument from hallucination. That we enjoy phenomenal access to reasons prior to any normative beliefs also helps to reconcile the Humean insight that infants (who lack concepts like ‘reason for’) can be motivated to act or form attitudes with the Kantian insight that motivation is a matter of recognizing and responding to reasons.

This chapter discusses the psychoanalytic foundations of organizational paradox. It argues that psychoanalytic theories offer a framework for the study of emotions in organizations and for the paradoxical tensions arising from emotions. It develops an analytical framework to discuss three core constructs of psychoanalytic thinking: unconscious emotions; defense mechanisms; and “the analytic attitude,” which is used to gain awareness of unconscious emotions, and as the basis of interventions to balance the contradictions (or paradoxical nature) of defense mechanisms. These constructs manifest in three dimensions of the workplace: among leaders, within groups, and in the organization itself. In the leadership dimension a new concept, the paradox of authority, to describe the tension between internal pulls and external roles that both support and undermine leadership, is introduced. It is shown how psychoanalytic theory can help to comprehend the power relationships embedded in implicit structures and their effects on organizational change.

Attention can be defined as a multifaceted gateway to consciousness. We use attention to focus on specific sensory signals (selective attention), to allocate resources to concurrent relevant sources (divided attention), to switch between tasks (alternate attention), to maintain focus on a task for a prolonged period (sustained attention), to ready ourselves for a quick response to sudden novel information (alertness); and all these processes, to some extent, control what sensory signals are processed up to the level of conscious awareness. The multifarious functions of attention often involve multisensory interactions, and in this chapter, will we discuss three broad issues in studying multisensory attention. We will start by considering multisensory spatial attention to signals within different sensory channels in a goal directed manner, in comparison to conditions whereby attention is automatically engaged by external multisensory signals. Next, we will discuss multisensory non-spatial attention. In conclusion, we will discuss the implications for multisensory learning and memory.

The professional interview is a charged psychological encounter and hurdle, necessary for all of us to traverse in order to move on in our lives and careers. The interviewer is the gatekeeper who holds the keys to our brighter future. This book is a detailed examination of the interview experience and our role as the interviewee within it. This book does not consider the content required for any given interview; instead, it looks in detail at the interview processes and performance from a psychological perspective in order to be the best we can be. Deconstructing the Interview teaches a way of mindfully connecting with the interview space, operating externally in the room, and guiding our answers and performance with situational awareness and an enhanced understanding of the psychological factors at play. As well as communication skills, both verbal and non-verbal, this book considers in detail our interface with the external world around us; to improve and refine our interview skills, and to operate in the room as our true authentic selves. Here we accept and embrace anxiety as an essential part of this process, and we choose to be ‘mindfully anxious’. This book breaks down the interview stage and its players from a psychological perspective, and helps the reader build interview skills from the ground up. This is a new and novel approach in helping the reader prepare for the interview process, and builds on the author’s previous book in this series (Deconstructing the OSCE, 2014, OUP).

Universities and economic development in Africa: Pact, academic core and coordination draws together evidence and synthesises the findings from eight African case studies. The three key findings presented in this report are as follows: 1. There is a lack of clarity and agreement (pact) about a development model and the role of higher education in development, at both national and institutional levels. There is, however, an increasing awareness, particularly at government level, of the importance of universities in the global context of the knowledge economy. 2. Research production at the eight African universities is not strong enough to enable them to build on their traditional undergraduate teaching roles and make a sustained contribution to development via new knowledge production. A number of universities have manageable student-staff ratios and adequately qualifi ed staff, but inadequate funds for staff to engage in research. In addition, the incentive regimes do not support knowledge production. 3. In none of the countries in the sample is there a coordinated effort between government, external stakeholders and the university to systematically strengthen the contribution that the university can make to development. While at each of the universities there are exemplary development projects that connect strongly to external stakeholders and strengthen the academic core, the challenge is how to increase the number of these projects. The project on which this report is based forms part of a larger study on Higher Education and Economic Development in Africa, undertaken by the Higher Education Research and Advocacy Network in Africa (HERANA). HERANA is coordinated by the Centre for Higher Education Transformation in South Africa.

AbstractThe growing interest in environmental migration has led to a wide range of organisations raising awareness on this topic. Politicians and policymakers, for instance, are using arguments that reference environmental migration in their political discourses or increasingly reflect on how to manage this seemingly emerging trend. The rise of this topic on ‘the agenda’ of policymakers, politicians, non-governmental organisations, and artists, to name a few, immediately calls for some scientific support, framing, or input, which is suddenly in high demand. Also, from a scientific perspective, how people are dealing with ongoing and increasing environmental changes lays bare existing social, ethnic, and gender inequalities. To be specific, when studying environmental changes and disasters, more knowledge can be derived about a society’s social and economic structure, relationship dynamics, and the nature of its adaptation capacity. Additionally, more knowledge can be gained about how external communities or countries are related to the studied society (Oliver-Smith 1999).

Malebranche holds that sensory experience represents the world from the body’s point of view. The chapter argues that Malebranche gives a systematic analysis of this bodily perspective in terms of the claim that the five external senses and bodily awareness represent nothing but relations to the body. The external senses represent relations between external objects and the perceiver’s body. Bodily awareness represents relations between parts of the perceiver’s body and her body as a whole, and the way she is related to her body. The senses thus represent the perceiver’s body as standing in two very different sets of relations. The external senses relate the body to a world of external objects, while bodily awareness relates this same body to the perceiver herself. The perceiver’s body, for Malebranche, is the center of the system of relations that make up her sensory world, bridging the gap between self and external objects.

"The study of the ability of self-awareness (self-awareness, the ability to perceive one's own body and mental properties separately from objects of the external world) in animals contributes to the study of the specifics of human consciousness. One of the aspects of self-awareness is body-awareness, which is expressed in the ability of an animal to take into account the physical parameters of its body when regulating behavior. We studied the ability of ferrets (Mustela putorius furo) to be aware of the limits of their own bodies. To solve the experimental problem, the animals had to choose holes suitable in size for penetration in the partition that divided the sections of the experimental setup. The shapes and sizes of the holes varied. We have used both small area holes that are suitable for penetration and large areas that are not suitable for penetration. It was found that all 6 animals participating in the experiment were able to choose a hole suitable for penetration from the first trial, despite the fact that it was smaller than the unsuitable one in area. In 18 test trials, ferrets made 105 successful penetrations and 3 unsuccessful attempts. This distribution differs from the uniform one (?2 = 97.25; df = 2; p <0.01). None of the individuals showed a significant reduction or increase in unsuccessful attempts to penetrate the holes This data may indicate that ferrets have knowledge of the boundaries of their bodies and the ability to compare them with the parameters of the penetration hole."

As we get older, the walking patterns and avoidance strategies may change due to the age-related degradation of our body. Since many studies show that tripping over obstacles is one of the most frequent causes of falls in the elderly [1], it is important for us to understand the control strategies of older adults during obstacle avoidance. The observation could let to an increased awareness of obstacle avoidance tasks and help diminishing falls risks in older adults [2].

Increasingly, the higher education sector is driven by sets of standards that describe quality – internal institutional standards that consider curriculum, teaching and delivery to students and external standards from both the sector and the professions that describe expectations, content, skills and attitudes that curricula must address to support graduate outcomes. Quality is the focus of these requirements, and yet quality in higher education remains a messy problem, with no clear framework (Kundu, 2016) and numerous variables that confound the problem. We ask what comes first: the external standards that accredit a university to provide education for a profession, or internal standards that focus on quality teaching and learning opportunities. The paper presents a short case study that highlights the challenge for course leaders pressured to meet industry requirements, and the impact this has on their awareness and capacity to design a transformational curriculum for students. We conclude that it is the difference between an aspirational courses, whereby quality is focussed on the learning design for student experience, and a compliant course, where quality is focussed on meeting static requirements.

Abstract The electronics supply chain is being increasingly infiltrated by non-authentic, counterfeit electronic parts, whose use poses a great risk to the integrity and quality of critical hardware. There is a wide range of counterfeit parts such as leads and body molds. The failure analyst has many tools that can be used to investigate counterfeit parts. The key is to follow an investigative path that makes sense for each scenario. External visual inspection is called for whenever the source of supply is questionable. Other methods include use of solvents, 3D measurement, X-ray fluorescence, C-mode scanning acoustic microscopy, thermal cycle testing, burn-in technique, and electrical testing. Awareness, vigilance, and effective investigations are the best defense against the threat of counterfeit parts.

Various software and excel-based tools for a preliminary estimation of the energy consumption of electric motor systems are available in the market, but a holistic approach is missing. Therefore a framework and a systematic process for the estimation of potential energy savings in motor systems running on alternating current are illustrated in this paper. Moreover a new software tool is discussed, that allows a holistic view on all motor systems within a company without cost-intensive measurements or the use of external consultants.

It is emphasized that national values are conceptual, ideological bases, consolidating factors, important life guidelines on the way to effective protection of Ukraine from Russian aggression and building a democratic, united Ukrainian state. Author analyzes the functioning of the mass media in the context of educational propaganda of individual, social and state values, the dominant core of which are patriotism, human rights and freedoms, social justice, material and spiritual wealth of Ukrainians, natural resources, morality, peace, religiosity, benevolence, national security, constitutional order. These key national values are a strong moral and civic core, a life-giving element, a self-affirming synergy, which on the basis of homogeneity binds the current Ukrainian society with the ancestors and their centuries-old material and spiritual heritage. Attention is focused on the fact that the current problem of building the Ukrainian state and protecting it from the brutal Moscow invaders is directly dependent on the awareness of all citizens of the essence of national values, national interests, national goals and filling them with the meaning of life, charitable socio-political life.
