This exegesis explores the relationships between the roles of performer, interpreter and composer and the location of my own individual creativity as a percussionist/musician within this nexus. Accompanying this exegesis is a creative portfolio, consisting of original compositions, arrangements and recordings of selected Australian percussion repertoire that I have performed. Adopting a practice-based research method, I have aimed to document the multifaceted approach taken in my own music-making, detailing the outcomes reached on this journey. I have endeavoured to develop and present different perspectives for applying my acquired musical knowledge through composition, collaboration and performing, and this is presented through a creative portfolio, which accompanies this exegesis. I also am examining the expansion of my practice, through the integration of using recording as documentation, and the broadening outcome that has had on the product I produce. I also investigate what influence dedicating myself to performing others’ compositions has had upon my practice to date. This exegesis is about opening windows into new sonic terrain and examining some of the boundaries and traditions prevalent in Western Art Music. I have attempted to do this through the eyes of an active music-maker—making informed decisions about musical contour based on improvisation, exploration and intuition.
Thesis (Masters)
Master of Music Research (MMusRes)
Queensland Conservatorium
Arts, Education and Law
Full Text

Levine, Matthew Jason. "A framework for technology exploration of aviation environmental mitigation strategies." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/54437.

The goal of this thesis was to develop a framework for modeling relevant environmental performance metrics and objectively simulating the future environmental impacts of aviation given the evolution of the fleet, the development of new technologies, and the expansion of airports. By exchanging fidelity for computational speed, a screening-level framework for assessing aviation's environmental impacts can be developed to observe new insights on fleet-level trends and inform environmental mitigation strategies. This was accomplished by developing per class average ``generic-vehicle" models that can reduce the fleet to a few representative aircraft models for predicting fleet results with reasonable accuracy. The method for Generating Emissions and Noise, Evaluating Residuals and using Inverse method for Choosing the best Alternatives (GENERICA) expands a previous generic vehicle formulation to additionally match DNL contours across a subset of airports. Designs of experiments, surrogate models, Monte Carlo simulations, and ``desirability" scores were combined to set the vehicle design parameters and reduce the mean relative error across the subset of airports. Results show these vehicle models more accurately represented contours at busy airports operating a wide variety of aircraft as compared to a traditional representative-in-class approach. Additionally, a rapid method for assessing population exposure counts was developed and incorporated into the noise tool, and the generic vehicles demonstrated accuracy with respect to population exposure counts for the actual fleet in the baseline year. The capabilities of the enabled framework were demonstrated to show fleet-level trends and explore placement of new runways at capacity constrained airports.

Annotation:
This project is about exploring a textile surface with the design elements of sound, physical contact and tactility. It is interesting to analyse how audio and physical elements can help stimulate the human senses. The aim is to bring these elements into a design context and create a textile surface that can give people a sensory and spatial experience. Through tufting it is possible to work with long and short pile, which adds tactile values in the material. The outcome of this exploration is a vast tufted landscape that partly covers the wall and continues out on the floor. The surface has an abstract visual appearance with irregular shapes that defines the different material. The large scale has an overwhelming effect and invites people to interact and explore the surface. This challenges the fundamental structures of architecture and increases the importance of tactile and human senses, such as curiosity in spatial environments
