In Australia, onshore oil and gas exploration is increasingly focusing on prospects in remote areas. While working in a remote area avoids many of the constraints and obstacles facing onshore development, it also presents a unique set of challenges such as logistics and mobilisation and the efficient delivery of required environmental surveys, cultural heritage management, and stakeholder and landholder engagement. The absence of integration between technical and subsurface-program planning and supporting functions such as approvals, native title and cultural heritage, and stakeholder engagement can substantially increase the risk of delays and cost overruns. Clear forward planning of short- and medium-term exploration activities can identify opportunities for cost savings and schedule efficiencies. Drawing examples from two unconventional oil and gas exploration programs in remote western Queensland, the extended abstract discusses some of the key challenges to working in a remote area including safety, the importance of early engagement with stakeholders and ways to manage some of the key risks to project schedules and delivery. Highlighting some of the innovative approaches to securing regulatory approval used by AMEC in securing approvals for seismic campaigns and drilling programs, the author examines the interaction between the subsurface program and the approvals required to allow subsurface activities to happen.

Abstract Since the emergence of cyberspace there have been different legal principles evolving, such as functional equivalence and technology-neutrality, with the aim to ease the regulator´s challenge of coping with the new paradigm of virtual, digital and electronic. Currently our societies have reached the doorstep of another similar disruption: infrastructures decentralized on the basis of blockchain and distributed ledger technology, or so-called cryptoeconomics. It is time to turn to cyberspace-related principles for inspiration on how to solve similar concerns, such as applying existing regulation(s) to new technological disruption. This article looks at different understandings of the functional equivalence principle, its shortcomings and the guidance it provides to regulators and courts in dealing with the challenges related to technological innovation including that of cryptoeconomics.

Premature convergence occurs in swarm intelligence algorithms searching for optima. A swarm intelligence algorithm has two kinds of abilities: exploration of new possibilities and exploitation of old certainties. The exploration ability means that an algorithm can explore more search place to increase the possibility that the algorithm can find good enough solutions. In contrast, the exploitation ability means that an algorithm focuses on the refinement of found promising areas. An algorithm should have a balance between exploration and exploitation, that is, the allocation of computational resources should be optimized to ensure that an algorithm can find good enough solutions effectively. The diversity measures the distribution of individuals’ information. From the observation of the distribution and diversity change, the degree of exploration and exploitation can be obtained. Another issue in multiobjective is the solution metric. Pareto domination is utilized to compare between two solutions, however, solutions are almost Pareto non-dominated for multi-objective problems with more than ten objectives. In this paper, the authors analyze the population diversity of particle swarm optimizer for solving both single objective and multiobjective problems. The population diversity of solutions is used to measure the goodness of a set of solutions. This metric may guide the search in problems with numerous objectives. Adaptive optimization algorithms can be designed through controlling the balance between exploration and exploitation.

This article provides a detailed exploration of the SIR epidemic model, starting with its meticulous formulation. The study employs a novel approach called the upper and lower bounds technique to approximate the solution to the SIR model, providing insights into the dynamic interplay between susceptible S, infected I, and recovered R populations. A new parametric solution to this model has been presented. Applying the Adomian decomposition method (ADM) allows for the attaining of highly accurate approximate solutions in the context of the SIR epidemic model. To validate the accuracy and robustness of the proposed approach, a numerical exploration is conducted, considering a diverse range of experimental parameters. This numerical analysis provides valuable insights into the sensitivity and responsiveness of the SIR epidemic model under varying conditions, contributing to the broader understanding of infectious disease dynamics. The interplay between theoretical formulation and numerical exploration establishes a comprehensive framework for studying the SIR model, with implications for refining our ability to predict and manage the spread of infectious diseases.

In an effort to become more resilient and contribute to saving water and other resources, people become more interested in growing their own food, but do not have sufficient gardening experience and education on conserving water. Previous work has attempted to develop resilient smart gardens that support the user in automated watering using simple embedded boards. However, none of these solutions proved to be scalable nor are they easy to replicate for people at home. We set up a student team project that created a safe space for exploring this multidisciplinary domain. We developed a smart resilient garden kit with Internet-of-Things devices that is easy to rebuild and scale. We use a small-scale board and a number of sensors connected to a planter. In this paper, we report on a prototypical implementation for multidisciplinary smart garden projects, our experiences with self-guided implementation and reflection meetings, and our lessons learned. By learning about water conservation using automation on a small scale, students develop a sense for engineering solutions regarding resource limitations early on. By extending such small projects, they can prepare for developing large-scale solutions for those challenges.

We study the problem of finding efficient exploration policies for the case in which an agent is momentarily not concerned with exploiting, and instead tries to compute a policy for later use. We first formally define the Optimal Exploration Problem as one of sequential sampling and show that its solutions correspond to paths of minimum expected length in the space of policies. We derive a model-free, local linear approximation to such solutions and use it to construct efficient exploration policies. We compare our model-free approach to other exploration techniques, including one with the best known PAC bounds, and show that ours is both based on a well-defined optimization problem and empirically efficient.

Technological and economic trends in the development of the oil and gas industry form promising directions for the development of geological research, oil and gas fields development and hydrocarbons production. Currently, in the world oil and gas production practice, there is a tendency to increase the share of involvement in the hard-to-reach and hard-to-recover reserves development, which results in the cost of geological exploration increasing. It is important to minimize these costs by improving existing and developing new technological solutions. Increasing the efficiency and knowledge intensity of new technologies being introduced is the most promising strategy for exploration activities, oil and gas fields development and exploitation. The current conditions for the exit of most foreign companies from the Russian sector of the oil and gas industry, including the search for potential oil locations, require the development or maintenance at the proper level of own innovative and knowledge-intensive solutions that ensure the further systematic development of the geological exploration sector. A potential vector in this direction could be technology transfer from foreign countries, including most of the Middle East and North Africa countries. The innovative activities of up stream in these countries (including in terms of geological exploration) determine the trends in the development of international geological exploration technologies, as well as potential foreign companies for the systematic institutionalization of mutually beneficial relations between Russian and foreign oil businesses.Saudi Arabia, Israel and Iraq companies develop promising innovative solutions for the oil and gas industry exploration sector, including attracting foreign technologies to their market. Saudi Arabian companies are the most active companies with a significant increase in the number of innovative technologies. AbstractOrganizations often face the challenge of institutional complexity, which involves incompatible prescriptions from multiple institutional logics. To deal with this challenge, prior researchers have proposed several strategies to tackle conflicts within and between organizations. The success of these solutions fundamentally hinges on achieving clarity. However, while clarity often brings further conflicts for both internal and external stakeholders, I argue that ambiguity logic is an alternative approach to deal with institutional complexity as it creates space for negotiations and potential solutions. As such, this paper proposes five research propositions that examine when ambiguous language and behavior can be better used to deal with institutional complexity. In general, the use of ambiguity logic is associated with power. Specifically, ambiguity logic is better applied in organizations when power is more evenly distributed among the stakeholders.

AbstractDesign problems are often presented as structured briefs with detailed constraints and requirements, suggesting a fixed definition. However, past studies have identified the importance of exploring design problems for creative design outcomes. Previous protocol studies of designers has shown that problems can “co-evolve” with the development of solutions during the design process. But to date, little evidence has been provided abouthowdesigners systematically explore presented problems to create better solutions. In this study, we conducted a qualitative analysis of 252 design problems collected from publically available sources, including award-winning product designs and open-source design competitions. This database offers an independent sample of presented problems, designers’ alternative problem descriptions, and innovative solutions. We report the results of this large-scale qualitative analysis aimed at characterizing changes to problems during the design process. Inductive coding was used to identify content patterns in “discovered” problem descriptions, with qualitative codes reliably scored by two independent coders. A total of 32 distinct patterns of problem exploration were identified across designers and presented problems. Each pattern is described in the form of a generalized strategy to guide designers as they explore problem spaces. The exploration patterns identified in this study are the first empirical evidence of problem exploration in independent design problems. Further, the presence of exploration patterns in discovered problems is associated with the selection of the corresponding solution as a challenge finalist. These empirically identified strategies for problem exploration may be useful for computational tools supporting designers.

Firefly algorithm is among the nature-inspired optimization algorithms. The standard firefly algorithm has been successfully applied to many engineering problems. However, this algorithm might be stuck in stagnation (the solutions do not enhance anymore) or possibly fall in premature convergence (fall in to the local optimum) in searching space. It seems that both issues could be connected to the exploitation and exploration. Excessive exploitation leads to premature convergence, while excessive exploration slows down the convergence. In this study, the classical firefly algorithm is modified such that make a balance between exploitation and exploration. The purposed modified algorithm ranks and sorts the initial solutions. Next, the operators named insertion, swap and reversion are utilized to search the neighbourhood of solutions in the second group, in which all these operators are chosen randomly. After that, the acquired solutions combined with the first group and the firefly algorithm finds the new potential solutions. A multi-echelon supply chain network problem is chosen to investigate the decisions associated with the distribution of multiple products that are delivered through multiple distribution centres and retailers to end customers and demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed algorithm.

Purpose Prior studies highlight the importance of building ambidextrous capabilities to achieve both exploitation of current knowledge and technologies to make profits today, and exploration of new knowledge and technologies to adapt to and prepare for tomorrow’s demands. In spite of its theoretical and practical importance, research on organizational ambidexterity in project-based organizations is scarce. Thus, the purpose of the paper is to study how ambidexterity may be managed and how exploration and exploitation may be achieved in construction projects. The research identifies some drivers and barriers to exploration and exploitation and also sheds light on how various management approaches interact and affect exploration and exploitation activities. Design/methodology/approach The empirical material is drawn from 40 semi-structured interviews with managers representing the client, the contractor and the designer involved in each of the seven large construction projects in the sample. Findings In contrast to prior literature in high-tech industries where exploitation focuses on continuous development, exploitation in construction projects often involves adopting conventional methods and solutions based on existing knowledge without any development efforts at all. This may enhance short-term efficiency and lower risk at the project level but increase risk at the firm level. Tight time schedules hinder both radical innovations and incremental developments, and the findings also reveal that to invest in efforts on explorative solutions, it must be possible to exploit the solutions in the same project. Research limitations/implications In this empirical context, the traditional structural and sequential ambidexterity solutions are not sufficient. In construction projects, contextual ambidexterity solutions in which key project actors collaborate in developing systemic innovations and fine-tuning solutions across projects are more effective. Practical implications Sufficient project size and/or long-term contracts over a series of projects enhance both investments in explorative activities and exploitation through continuous developments from project to project. In design–bid–build contracts, the client and consultant often miss opportunities to explore new technical solutions that rely on contractor competencies. Early procurement of contractors (e.g. in collaborative design–build contracts) thereby enables the achievement of both exploration and exploitation. Originality/value This study provides important input to the authors’ understanding of how exploration and exploitation may be managed in project-based industries, which has been scarcely studied in previous ambidexterity literature.

An Internet of things (IoT) ecosystem is a fast-developing network in which users can connect a heterogeneity of physical and virtual devices, including customized healthcare areas. As medical resources are scarce, populations are aging with chronic diseases and require remote monitoring, medical expenses are rising, and telemedicine is being demanded in developing nations, the IoT is an attractive topic in healthcare. Through the IoT, people can enjoy better health and diminish pressure on sanitary systems. In this study, previously published studies in Healthcare IoT (HIoT) systems are detailed, analyzed, and taxonomically classified. By categorizing the articles according to the types of HIoT systems, we dispense a detailed taxonomical study. In addition, different evaluation methodologies, tools, and metrics are discussed, along with their advantages and disadvantages. The studies indicate that power management, trust, privacy, fog computing, and resource management are among the open issues. The future of the Internet includes tactile networks, social networks, big data analytics, software-defined networking, network function virtualization, the Internet of nano things (IoNT), and blockchain. It would be beneficial to study and research HioT systems further in terms of interoperability, the implementation of real-world test beds, scalability, and mobility.

The two basic search behaviors used in metaheuristic algorithms in general and swarm intelligence in particular are exploration and exploitation. Exploration refers to searching the unexplored area of the feasible region while exploitation refers to the search of the neighborhood of a promising region. The success of these algorithms highly depends on how these two search behaviors are balanced. Increasing the number of initial solutions indeed increase the performance of the algorithm over the expense of the runtime. Different exploration and exploitation adjustments are used in different metaheuristic algorithms. To well balance the degree of exploration and exploitation, which ultimately leads to finding good solutions, needs a careful implementation and sufficient runtime. However, the runtime is another issue which has been a bottleneck for different application, especially for high dimensional, highly constrained and expensive objective function cases. Using parallel computing to overcome this limitation has been a central research issue in the study of metaheuristic algorithms. The three basic parallelization approaches used are the parallel move model which is a master slave model where solutions will be distributed to different processors for updating, parallel multi start model which uses several updating methods for the solutions in parallel and move acceleration method, which refers to a parallel implementation with parallelizing the objective function. There is no specific parallelization used towards balancing of exploration and exploitation is mentioned. Hence, in this paper a parallel implementation of swarm intelligence in general and two algorithms, namely particle swarm optimization and prey predator algorithm, in particular will be discussed. The parallelization proposed is aimed to merge the parallel move model and the parallel multi start model with the aim of adjusting the degree of exploration and exploitation. Experimental study based on ten benchmark problems from constrained as well as unconstrained problems will be used for simulation. It will be shown that the parallelization with specific distribution of exploration and exploitation runs better and efficiently compared to the serial and also the parallel version without exporation/exploitation adjustment.

Swarm intelligence algorithms (SI) have an excellent ability to search for the optimal solution and they are applying two mechanisms during the search. The first mechanism is exploration, to explore a vast area in the search space, and when they found a promising area they switch from the exploration to the exploitation mechanism. A good SI algorithm can balance the exploration and the exploitation mechanism. In this paper, we propose a modified version of the chimp optimization algorithm (ChOA) to train a feed-forward neural network (FNN). The proposed algorithm is called a modified weighted chimp optimization algorithm (MWChOA). The main drawback of the standard ChOA and the weighted chimp optimization algorithm (WChOA) is they can be trapped in local optima because most of the solutions update their positions based on the position of the four leader solutions in the population. In the proposed algorithm, we reduced the number of leader solutions from four to three, and we found that reducing the number of leader solutions enhances the search and increases the exploration phase in the proposed algorithm, and avoids trapping in local optima. We test the proposed algorithm on the Eleven dataset and compare it against 16 SI algorithms. The results show that the proposed algorithm can achieve success to train the FNN when compare to the other SI algorithms.

The visual exploration of these networks faces a multitude of challenges related to the geo-reference and the size of these networks with up to several million edges and the manifold types of such networks. In this paper, solutions for the interactive visual analysis for several distinct types of large complex networks will be discussed, in particular, time-dependent, multi-scale, and multi-layered ensemble networks. Custom-tailored for climate researchers, the GTX tool supports heterogeneous tasks based on interactive, GPU-based solutions for on-the-fly large network data processing, analysis, and visualization. These solutions are illustrated for two use cases: multi-scale climatic process and climate infection risk networks. This tool helps one to reduce the complexity of the highly interrelated climate information and unveils hidden and temporal links in the climate system, not available using standard and linear tools (such as empirical orthogonal function analysis).

This work explores diverse novel soliton solutions due to fractional derivative, dispersive, and nonlinearity effects for the nonlinear time M-fractional paraxial wave equation. The advanced exp [-φ(ξ)] expansion method integrates the nonlinear M-fractional Paraxial wave equation for achieving creative solitonic and traveling wave envelopes to reconnoiter such dynamics. As a result, trigonometric and hyperbolic solutions have been found via the proposed method. Under the conditions of the constraint, fruitful solutions are gained and verified with the use of the symbolic software Maple 18. For any chosen set of the allowed parameters 3D, 2D and density plots illustrate, this inquisition achieved kink shape, the collision of kink type and rogue wave, periodic rogue wave, some distinct singular periodic soliton waves for time M-fractional Paraxial wave equation. As certain nonlinear effects cancel out dispersion effects, optical solitons typically can travel great distances without dissipating. We have constructed reasonable soliton solutions and managed the actual meaning of the acquired solutions of action by characterizing the particular advantages of the summarized parameters by the portrayal of figures and by interpreting the physical occurrences. New precise voyaging wave configurations are obtained using symbolic computation and the previously described methodologies. However, the movement role of the waves is explored, and the modulation instability analysis is used to describe the stability of waves in a dispersive fashion of the obtained solutions, confirming that all created solutions are precise and stable.

<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> Indoor navigation and visualization become increasingly important nowadays. Meanwhile, the proliferation of new sensors as well as the advancement of data processing provide massive point clouds to model the indoor environment in high accuracy. However, current state-of-the-art solutions fail to manage such large datasets efficiently. File based solutions often require substantial development work while database solutions are still faced with issues such as inefficient data loading and indexing. In this research, through a case study which aims to solve the problem of intermittent rendering of massive points in the context of indoor navigation, we devised and implemented an algorithm to compute the continuous Level of Detail (cLoD) where geometric and classification information are considered. Benchmarks are developed and different approaches in Oracle are tested to learn the pros and cons. Surprisingly, the flat table approach could be very efficient compared with other schemes. The crucial point lies in how to address priority of different dimensions including cLoD, classification and spatial dimensions, and avoid unnecessary scanning of the table. Writing results either to the memory or the disk constitutes major part of the time cost when large output is concerned. Conventional solutions based on spatial data objects present poor performance due to cumbersome indexing structure, inaccurate selection and additional decoding process. Besides, approximate selection in the unit of physical object is proposed and the performance is satisfactory when large amount of data is requested. The knowledge acquired could prompt the development of a novel data management of high dimensional point clouds where the classification information is involved.</p>

Space exploration is a hot topic in the application field of mobile robots. Proposed solutions have included the frontier exploration algorithm, heuristic algorithms, and deep reinforcement learning. However, these methods cannot solve space exploration in time in a dynamic environment. This paper models the space exploration problem of mobile robots based on the decision-making process of the cognitive architecture of Soar, and three space exploration heuristic algorithms (HAs) are further proposed based on the model to improve the exploration speed of the robot. Experiments are carried out based on the Easter environment, and the results show that HAs have improved the exploration speed of the Easter robot at least 2.04 times of the original algorithm in Easter, verifying the effectiveness of the proposed robot space exploration strategy and the corresponding HAs.

Seismic exploration is important for development of new fields and the resumption of production at old areas of oil production. These works involve studying of underground geological structures using seismic profiling and seismotomography methods. In fact, detailed information about the territory is necessary for almost every participant in the process—to find the optimal routes for movement on terrain, to optimize the volume of forest felling on profiles, for georeferencing and checking coordinate measurements at points, etc. The availability of spatial data is also important for increasing the level of safety and trouble-free operation during work. One of possible solutions is to perform field surveys using aerial photography and airborne laser scanning, followed creation of virtual models based on them with instrumentation adapted to the specifics of these works. Modern GIS, with all their development, has number of disadvantages. It is difficult to use GIS by non-specialists; full-featured GIS are expensive, and free solutions has limited analysis functionality and can’t make good 3D visualizations, it is difficult to protect spatial information from unauthorized copying. These problems can be solved without using classic GIS packages. Instead, it is proposed to use virtual environments closed from editing and access to the original data. Test area of 69 km2 in the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug was selected for testing virtual modeling technologies. LIDAR and aerial photography datasets were obtained, and subsequent processing of the resulting was done, forming highly-detailed virtual environment.
