Post-war property reforms in transitional Cambodia plunged the country into new conflict: a war of land. Under the guise of ‘beautification’, 11% of the capital’s residents have been displaced in under two decades in a wave of violent gentrification, enacted through forced eviction and dispossession. Mounting resistance shows signs of taking effect, however, evincing a turning point in state–society relations. Here, the government has trialled a new approach, moving from techniques of violent expropriation towards a conciliatory method, built on dialogue, consultation and negotiation. Responding to calls for more work on resistance to gentrification and success in the fight to stay put, in this paper, I investigate these claims, bringing the literatures on gentrification and post-politics to bear on the evictions crisis in Cambodia. Drawing on testimony of former residents and media analysis, I examine techniques of removal and resistance in a case study of the eviction and demolition of Cambodia’s White Building (1963–2017). I argue that recent shifts are not an abandonment of the state’s compulsion to expropriation, exclusion and expulsion but a subtle modification of its gentrification strategy: away from the naked coercion associated with its own kleptocratic variant of authoritarian neoliberalism towards the post-political manufacture of hollow consent.

Infrastructure development, especially to improve facilities that support the realization of dreams for the future, also has an impact that is not easy in that problems will arise, in the form of land evictions which are called agrarian conflicts, agricultural conflicts arise as a result of incompatibility between two parties, and This agricultural conflict itself occurred in Sena Village. The aim of this research is to describe in depth the occurrence of evictions as a form of agrarian conflict in Sena Village. This research uses a qualitative research method using a case study approach. The data collection techniques used were documentation observation and interviews. The results of this research show that conflict occurs because local people claim that the land belongs to them, so they work on the land to build houses and also make land for farming as a source of their livelihood, due to the community's deep lack of understanding. Those on the land experienced eviction because the land they had been occupying had been state-owned land, thus resulting in positive and negative impacts from the eviction of the land. From these findings it can be concluded that as a society we must understand how to use land. If we do not understand the origin of the land, to whom it belongs, it will have a bad impact in the future, because state-owned land cannot be misused.

Content-Centric Networking (CCN) is an innovative approach that emphasizes content. A key strategy in CCN for spreading data across the network is in-network caching. Effective caching methods, including content placement and removal tactics, enhance the use of network resources. Cache replacement, also known as content eviction policies, is essential for maximizing CCN's efficiency. When cache storage is full, some content must be removed to make room for new items due to limited storage space. Recently, several advanced replacement strategies have been developed to determine the most suitable content for eviction. This study categorizes the latest cache replacement strategies into various groups such as static, space scarcity, content update, centralized, energy-efficient, weighted, adaptive, and based on dynamic popularity. These categories are based on the approaches suggested in previous research. Additionally, this paper provides a critical analysis of existing methods and suggests future research directions. To the best of our knowledge, this is the most up-to-date and comprehensive review available on this topic.

Protected areas such as national parks, conservation zones, and nature reserves are globally defined so by governments primarily to preserve the natural environment for the benefit of flora and fauna, that is, for the public good. Eviction of Forest communities is a result of this endeavour. The Ogiek community of the Mau Forest complex in Kenya have fallen victim to this. The government declared the forest a protected area and hence evicting them contrary to Chapter Four of the Kenya Constitution that gives all Kenyans regardless of where they live, fundamental rights and freedoms. The evictions raise the question of what happens to the evictees’ human security. It is against this backdrop that this study set out to examine the nature of Mau Forest evictions in Kenya. The study used descriptive research design and had a sample of 472 respondents who included 384 household heads, 1 County Commissioner, 2 Deputy county commissioners, 7 chiefs, 32 village elders, 10 Police Officers, 1 UNEP Representative, 1 UN Habitat Representative, 10 Officers from Kenya Forest Service (KFS), 5 officers from Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), 5 heads NGOs, Directore (NEMA), 10 Heads of CBOs. The study applied simple random and purposive sampling techniques. Interviews, questionnaires, FGDs and observation were used to collect primary data while secondary data was gathered from publications. SPSS version 26 was used to analyse quantitative data and presented in tables, graphs, and charts. Narratives and verbatim quotations were used to present the qualitative data. The study found that the Mau forest evictions had negative effects on Ogiek human security, including deaths (86%), injuries (97%), destruction of homes (98%), farms (80%), livestock (52%), illness (95%), lack of sanitation (92%), gender-based violence (69%), disruption of schooling (100%), loss of culture (94%), separation from family (88%), loss of livelihoods (98%), and increased human-wildlife conflicts (78%), and 100% of respondents feared for their safety. The study recommends that, the government adopts a more humane and sustainable relocation policy and provide alternative ways of livelihood to the victims.

This information is useful as it will better inform forest managers, policymakers, and other actors in their efforts to fairly and responsibly manage and balance ecological and social development. The study suggests that the government of Kenya adopts a more humane and sustainable relocation policy and involves the Ogiek community in decision-making and investment in alternative livelihoods.

The acceptance of NAND flash memories in the electronic world, due to its non-volatility, high density, low power consumption, small size and fast access speed is hopeful. Due to the limitations in life span and wear levelling, this memory needs special attention in its management techniques compared to the conventional techniques used in hard disks. In this paper, an efficient page replacement algorithm is proposed for NAND flash based memory systems. The proposed algorithm focuses on decision making policies based on the relative reference ratio of pages in memory. The size adjustable eviction window and the relative reference based shadow list management technique proposed by the algorithm contribute much to the efficiency in page replacement procedure. The simulation tool based experiments conducted shows that the proposed algorithm performs superior to the well-known flash based page replacement algorithms with regard to page hit ratio and memory read/write operations.

Forest communities have had to globally endure evictions, sometimes forceful, due to the need for governments to conserve the environment by protecting forests from negative human actions. The Ogiek are hunters and gatherers and rely mainly on wild fruits, beekeeping, and game hunting as a source of livelihood. Animals, e.g., hyrax, were hunted. The Ogiek's lives and sources of livelihood are highly dependent on the forest. The Ogiek community of Mau Forest, Kenya, is a forest community that has faced a similar fate since the colonial period. This study sought to establish the effects of Mau Forest evictions on the human security of the Ogiek community in Kenya. The study used a descriptive research design. It is also essential for civil society leaders. The study recommends that clear and transparent guidelines regarding the eviction process and any form of compensation be set and discussed with the affected households so as to avoid unnecessary impoverishment and protect livelihoods. The study further reckons that the government should adopt a more humane and sustainable relocation policy and provide alternative ways of livelihood to the victims.

Information about capacity of transport and dispersion of soluble pollutants in natural streams are important in the management of water resources, especially in planning preventive measures to minimize the problems caused by accidental or intentional waste, in public health and economic activities that depend on the use of water. Considering this importance, this study aimed to develop a warning system for rivers, based on experimental techniques using tracers and analytical equations of one-dimensional transport of soluble pollutants conservative, to subsidizing the decision-making in the management of water resources. The system was development in JAVA programming language and MySQL database can predict the travel time of pollutants clouds from a point of eviction and graphically displays the temporal distribution of concentrations of passage clouds, in a particular location, downstream from the point of its launch.

This research is motivated by the social movement of the former residents of the evicted former UIN Raden Fatah Jakabaring where the former community (five business) demand compensation rights for their land and buildings that have been evicted due to the land acquisition of Campus B UIN Raden Fatah in 2015. some people who have land rights and are proven by official certificates in accordance with statutory regulations demand their rights, namely compensation for land and buildings that have been evicted to the provincial government. South Sumatra and UIN Raden Fatah, after deliberation, the results did not find agreement, so the provincial government proposed to the community that the land acquisition case (eviction) was directed to the legal domain of the Palembang city court to find the best solution so that it could be resolved fairly so that no parties who feel aggrieved.The purpose of the study was to determine the dynamics of the ex-eviction community in the construction of the Raden Fatah Jakabaring UIN building and the form of the ex-community social movement towards the acquisition of eviction land at UIN Jakabaring. The research methodology used is a qualitative method. Narrative-descriptive research with an inductive-deductive approach from the truth of the case to the general public regarding a phenomenon that occurs. research instrument with interview sheets and documentation, data collection techniques through in-depth interviews with parties related to the land dispute case of UIN Raden Fatah.The results showed that the dynamics of the social movement of the former (five business) residents of the former evicted UIN Raden Fatah Jakabaring, namely the community worked hard to demand compensation for their land and buildings that had been evicted by submitting the case to the Palembang city court with the assistance of a resident's attorney. namely Herman Iskandar who was represented by Rozaillah et al. With this, the case was won by the former Panca Usaha community with the results of negotiations by Governor Herman Deru to the former community. So that the community is given two choices from the results of the negotiations, namely compensation in the form of an allocation by the governor of South Sumatra, the first choice is the allocation of vacant land in the Jakabaring area and the second option is flats in the Kertapati area. Securing communication in vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) is hampered by numerous constraints, making it more difficult. First, traditional security schemes cannot be directly applied in VANET because they consider fixed topology. Second, VANET enables dynamic spectrum access where nodes constantly change frequencies due to their high degree of mobility, resulting in severe consequences on network performance. Third, an effective security scheme in VANET needs local and continual knowledge of nodes. Last, the presence of malicious nodes and their misbehaving activities impair the safety of the drivers since they might alter the content of the sent safety alerts. With these constraints in mind, this paper presents a unique security strategy that utilizes node behaviour during message exchange as a security metric to address these issues. Through the message alert exchange phase, node behaviour is measured through the fuzzy logic framework to generate a rank for each node called trust level (BL), which describes the node’s reliability in exchanging safety messages correctly. Moreover, all messages in VANET are encrypted using the existing cryptography techniques. The proposed scheme is developed to enhance communication security in VANET, minimize the effects of malicious nodes, and improve resource utilization in VANET. Evaluation of the proposed scheme shows that it improves the performance of VANET in terms of end-to-end delay, packet delivery ratio, and packet loss ratio. According to the results, our scheme improves throughput by up to 23% and reduces end-to-end delay by up to 60%.

Penelitian ini menganalisis dari tiga perspektif, yaitu: strategi pemerataan, efektivitas, dan responsivitas dalam evaluasi kebijakan. Metode penelitian ini menggunakan deskriftif kualitatif dengan teknik pengumpulan data melalui wawancara, observasi, dan dokumentasi. Hasil penelitian ini menjelaskan bahwa kebijakan tata ruang dan bangunan reklamasi Pantai Metro Tanjung Bunga Kota Makassar dari pendekatan strategi pemerataan yaitu Pemerintah Kota Makassar lebih mengutamakan kepentingan pihak swasta dalam bentuk privatisasi dibandingkan dengan kesejahteraan dan kemajuan masyarakat, sehingga yang terjadi adalah penggusuran dan kerusakan ekosistem lingkungan. Dari aspek efektivitas dalam evaluasi kebijakan, Pemerintah Kota Makassar dalam mengimplementasikan kebijakan tidak melibatkan masyarakat atau kebijakan tersebut tidak didasari sosialisasi ke seluruh lapisan masyarakat. Dari aspek responsivitas dalam evaluasi kebijakan dianggap belum tepat karena hanya melahirkan penggusuran, penghilangan lahan kelola masyarakat, pengalihan profesi, serta pemerintah kurang memiliki kepekaan dalam menyelesaikan berbagai permasalahan kebijakan reklamasi pantai.This study aims to understand and analyze the evaluation of spatial planning policies and reclamation buildings at Metro Tanjung Bunga Beach in Makassar. This study analyzes from three perspectives, namely: equity strategy, effectiveness, and responsiveness in policy evaluation. This research method uses qualitative descriptive with data collection techniques through interviews, observation, and documentation. The results of this study explain that the spatial and building reclamation policy of Metro Tanjung Bunga Beach in Makassar from the approach of equalization strategy namely the Makassar Government prioritizes the interests of the private sector in the form of privatization compared to the welfare and progress of the community, so that what happens is eviction and damage to the environmental ecosystem. From the aspect of effectiveness in policy evaluation, the Makassar Government in implementing policies does not involve the community or the policy is not based on socialization to all levels of society. From the aspect of responsiveness in the evaluation of policies considered not appropriate because it only gave birth to evictions, the removal of community managed land, the transfer of the profession, and the government lacked sensitivity in solving various beach reclamation policy issues.

Land grabbing is a form of unlawful act, namely an act of abuse of authority over land ownership rights. Acts of encroachment can take the form of occupying land, installing fences, or eviction of land owners and so on. The act of illegally grabbing land is an unlawful act, which can be classified as a criminal act as stated in the provisions of the Criminal Code. The problem approach used in this writing is the normative juridical method. Primary data collection techniques are obtained by conducting searches, inventories and reviewing regulations using literature studies including statutory regulations, books and articles in journals and scientific works. Deductive analysis techniques are used to analyze data with a starting point or based on general rules, then a specific conclusion is drawn. The mechanism for resolving land grabbing cases that occur in the community can be carried out through deliberation or mediation, litigation, non-litigation, through the role of law enforcement officials, resolution through arbitration institutions. As for the role of the prosecutor's office in implementing court decisions in cases of land grabbing, the main role of the prosecutor's office in this context is as the implementer of court decisions that have permanent legal force. The prosecutor's office is responsible for ensuring that the implementation of these decisions is carried out. The government's suggestion is to provide information to the public by means of outreach, appeals and information, especially about land ownership and the prosecutor's office as the implementer of court decisions can provide protection to people who have land rights.

Globally, colorectal cancer is one of the most prevalent cancers and following sphincter-preserving procedures for rectal cancer, many patients experience various forms of bowel dysfunction. Low anterior resection syndrome (LARS), which has a detrimental effect on the patients' quality of life, is the most common form in which bowel dysfunction presents and is a frequently reported complication of rectal cancer surgeries. Assessment of LARS severity requires a thorough history taking, physical examination of the patients, use of validated questionnaires, and other diagnostic techniques. The clinical manifestations of LARS can be categorized into two groups. The first includes increased frequency, incontinence, and fecal urgency. The second category includes issues with bowel emptying, incomplete eviction sensations, and constipation. Some patients describe traits from both categories, either switching back and forth between the two patterns or experiencing both at once. Each patient's LARS treatment should be tailored as per need. Patients with major LARS typically require multimodal therapy to achieve acceptable results. Treatment options include minimally invasive techniques as well as conservative care such as pharmacological management, pelvic floor rehabilitation, and transanal irrigation. Fecal diversion might be required if this treatment is unsuccessful. Appropriate Kegel exercise of the anal sphincter and initial precise dissection with preservation of nerves and development of a neorectal reservoir after anastomosis can limit the occurrence of LARS. For patients who have LARS risk factors, pretreatment counselling is a crucial step. The purpose of this research is to review the available information about clinical manifestation and treatment of LARS.

The substantial surge in users has adversely impacted the performance of the present IP-based Internet. Named data networking (NDN) emerges as a future alternative, given its distributed content caching system, where data can be cached in multiple routers and retrieved from the closest one instead of the original producer, enhancing content availability, reducing latency, and minimizing data loss. This paper introduces the less popular content eviction (LPCE) policy, a novel cache replacement scheme designed to enhance the caching performance of the conventional LFU (least frequently used) policy in NDN routers, thereby improving overall network efficiency. The proposed method subsumes LFU and FIFO (first in first out) policies and employs an additional list controlled by the LRU (least recently used) policy. Utilizing the ccnSim simulator, we conduct a comparison of LPCE’s performance with that of the LFU technique and other competing caching techniques, considering variations in several simulation parameters. Experimental results reveal that the proposed LPCE algorithm excels over others across a majority of performance metrics, such as cache hit ratio, content delivery delay, upstream hop count, network traffic, and producers’ load. Besides, the findings indicate that LPCE outperforms LFU, with an increase in cache hit ratio ranging from 1.32% to 5.75%.

The spatial dynamics of greater Lomé and Atakpamé lead to land pressures marked by increased demands for building plots. These desires for land create land insecurity, the implications of which disrupt the social development of populations. The objective of This item is to explain how land insecurity and its implications influence the social evolution of the populations of greater Lomé and Atakpamé. To achieve this, this research used quantitative and qualitative approaches based respectively on questionnaire administration and individual interview techniques. In total, 97 people victims of land insecurity were interviewed in greater Lomé compared to 89 in Atakpamé. The results from field studies showed that in greater Lomé, land insecurity is caused by double sales of land, eviction and expropriation. In Atakpamé, they manifest themselves in the selling off of arable land and the clandestine sale of inheritance land. As a result of these insecurities, buyers, whether from greater Lomé or Atakpamé, have lost their land and are forced to return, for some, to rental properties and for others, to family homes. Also, the loss of property rights on land has caused, among the populations of Atakpamé, the cessation of income-generating activities based mainly on agriculture. These situations have made buyers vulnerable and destabilized their social and economic development. Which plunges them into long-term precariousness.

This article examines the system for controlling people identified as “Gypsies” in the multilingual Tyrolean region of the Habsburg Empire bounded by three state borders: one with the Kingdom of Italy, to the south; one with Switzerland, to the west; and one with Bavaria, to the north. This is a system that, especially in the closing decades of the nineteenth century, was growing more and more stringent and systematic. Thus, on the one hand, the discussion will close in on the increasingly widespread and insistent production of legal norms aimed precisely at establishing the identity of people, their “territorial belonging,” and managing their freedom of movement across space. To this end—in order to control, regulate, or repress the mobility of people regarded as socially dangerous—a variety of tools and techniques were deployed or perfected. These included eviction and expulsion orders, forced repatriations, extraditions, and even the uptake of photography, dactyloscopy, and anthropometry (by police forces). On the other hand, a picture will be painted of this systemic, multipronged practice by way of some exemplary cases that will enable us to look at it from two sides, highlighting not only the mobility strategies devised by “Gypsies” and vagrants in general, but also a certain difficulty on the part of the Tyrolean administrative and police bodies in giving concrete application to these control instruments.

Authorship is an attitude of a creative worker, which in this context is a photojournalist that can develop over time. In this study, researchers examine the form of ideas that exist in Arif Hidayah in visualizing the Tamansari community with the title “Memories of Home”. This study aims to determine the form of Arif Hidayah’s authorship in terms of aesthetic competence, personal implications and the meaning of Arif Hidayah himself in understanding substance. The researcher used qualitative research methods with an authorship case study approach. Data collection was carried out through in-depth interviews, observation and literature studies. The results showed that, (1) Arif Hidayah chose the type of composition, lighting and display in accordance with Arif Hidayah’s personal ideas, (2) Arif Hidayah’s personality has implications for creating the subject’s background within the scope of education, work, family and interests that is in Arif Hidayah to visualize the Tamansari community as a victim of eviction, (3) All meanings in visualizing the Tamansari community, Arif Hidayah always keeps the meaning in terms of the understanding that exists in Arif Hidayah, (4) The idea in Arif Hidayah’s photo project is the connection between his background ideas and Arif Hidayah’s mastery of the technical aspects of photography itself. These aspects are interconnected because Arif Hidayah’s imagination regarding the Tamansari community is based on memories and memories of his past, which are unconsciously conveyed through journalistic photography techniques in the “Memories of Home” project.

Oblivious Random Access Machine (ORAM) is a cryptographic tool used to obfuscate the access pattern. In this paper, we focus on perfect security of ORAM. A perfectly secure ORAM is an ORAM that can resist against an adversary with unlimited computing power, and the failure probability of ORAM is zero rather than negligible. Since all existing perfectly secure single-server ORAM solutions require at least sublinear worst-case bandwidth overhead, we pose a natural and open question: can we construct a perfectly secure single-server ORAM with logarithmic worst-case bandwidth overhead? In this paper, we propose the first tree-based perfectly secure ORAM scheme, named LPS-ORAM. To meet the requirements of perfectly secure ORAM, two techniques are presented. One technique is dynamic remapping associated with a mutable scope, and the other is dynamically balanced eviction. Their combined effect allows the root bucket to never fill up while maintaining its statistical security in tree-based ORAM. In the worst case, our solution achieves logarithmic bandwidth overhead. Therefore, our solution answers the open question in the affirmative. In terms of overhead for temporary storage on the client side, compared with the latest perfectly secure ORAM solution, our solution is reduced from sublinear to logarithmic, and even if the server storage overhead scales lightly, it is still at the same level of quantity as the state of the art. Finally, the evaluation results show that our LPS-ORAM has a significant advantage in terms of bandwidth overhead and overhead for temporary storage on the client side.

With the emergence of the housing problems in Karachi, new housing schemes are being launched on the city’s outskirts. Instead of launching new housing in the suburbs, this research aims to study one of the existing dilapidated areas within the city and considering redevelopment as an alternate to eviction. This research revolves around the qualitative approach that involved surveys of Martin Quarters, focused gathering discussions and on-site meetings with involved stakeholders. A total of 50 respondents were picked using the multistage random sample method. The analysis is based upon the perception of householders about the revitalization of the area and examining the actual planning of government quarters that aimed to house federal employees in Karachi in the first phase of development of Karachi in 1947-1957 and current planning techniques used by people guided by traditional ways of living. The paper finds that the land on which Martin Quarters are situated is an expensive land of State that is being wasted due to the low-density settlement and also occupied illegally by many residents. Furthermore, it is improperly planned and growing haphazardly due to the increase in the population of the city and is at risk of decay and chaos. The paper concludes that the revitalization of Martin Quarters by the government is only a solution to stop the decaying of this area and it will benefit the general masses by enhancing accommodation capacity. Over the past three decades, various countries and stakeholders have aimed at having cities that can better handle natural and human-made disasters, protect human life, absorb the impact of economic, environmental and social hazards and promote well-being, inclusive and sustainable growth. This paper investigates how informal ties result in in-filling and the creation of slums in the context of efforts to make cities resilient in Ghana using the Accra Metropolis as case study. The United Nations Habitat classification of slums was used to purposively select two slum settlements in Accra for the study. The study used mixed methods of quantitative and qualitative approaches to collect data from April 2018 to August 2018. Quantitative data was collected from 400 slum dwellers while qualitative data was collected from eight focus group discussion sessions and in-depth interviews with at least one senior official from related institutions such as Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (MLGRD), Ministry of Water Resources (MWR), Ministry of Works and Housing (MWH), Ministry of Inner City and Zongo Development (MICZD), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Ghana Police Service, and Ghana National Fire Service. Descriptive techniques were used for the analysis. The findings are that informal ties contribute to in-filling in slums. Slum dwellers do not plan to return home, they are not involved in land use decision making and the slums have opportunities and challenges to the slum dwellers and AMA. The AMA should avoid forced eviction of slums and rather enforce development control bye-laws, implement slum upgrading programs, and involve slum dwellers in upgrading programs. Slum dwellers must cooperate with AMA to make Accra resilient. The mainstreaming of the issue of slums in all urban development agendas needs to be given the needed political and policy attention by central government and all stakeholders.

The study was conducted for three months, from February to June 2018. The research subjects were the community, especially children who were sitting in the elementary school along with parents of students at Tanjung Sari. Procedure This research is this research using procedures with stages including the following: planning, observation and implementation stages. In this study using qualitative and quantitative analysis techniques obtained through respondents' statements contained in the questionnaire data, and then to check the accuracy of the data is also carried out interviews, observation and documentation. While in describing the data obtained quantitatively used descriptive statistics, this was done in this study to obtain the correct information. Furthermore, in data processing there are two steps used, Data Selection and Classification The steps taken are a) checking whether all respondents; b) check all questions in the questionnaire to ensure answers according to the instructions given; c) check whether the collected data is suitable for processing. Then giving the score weight for each alternative answer in scoring is used Likert scale which is one way to determine the score. This technique is used to get the tendency of the scores given by respondents on each item of the question according to the criteria or benchmarks used. Based on the results of research conducted that the impact of residential execution on the continuity of education in elementary school age children in Tanjung Sari, Kelurahan Karwen, Luwuk Subdistrict, Banggai Regency has a very strong impact on the continuity of education in elementary school children in Tanjung Sari, Karaton, Luwuk Subdistrict, Banggai District.

Sporulation of spk1/+ heterozygotes gave rise to spk1 spores that grew into microcolonies but could not be further propagated. These colonies were greatly enriched for budded cells, especially those with large buds. Similarly, eviction of CEN plasmids bearing SPK1 from cells with a chromosomal SPK1 disruption yielded viable cells with only low frequency. Spk1 protein was identified by immunoprecipitation and immunoblotting. It was associated with protein-Ser, Thr, and Tyr kinase activity in immune complex kinase assays. Spk1 was localized to the nucleus by immunofluorescence. The nucleotide sequence of the SPK1 5' noncoding region revealed that SPK1 contains two MluI cell cycle box elements. These elements confer S-phase-specific transcription to many genes involved in DNA synthesis. Northern (RNA) blotting of synchronized cells verified that the SPK1 transcript is coregulated with other MluI box-regulated genes. The SPK1 upstream region also includes a domain highly homologous to sequences involved in induction of RAD2 and other excision repair genes by agents that induce DNA damage. spk1 strains were hypersensitive to UV irradiation. Taken together, these findings indicate that SPK1 is a dual-specificity (Ser/Thr and Tyr) protein kinase that is essential for viability. The cell cycle-dependent transcription, presence of DNA damage-related sequences, requirement for UV resistance, and nuclear localization of Spk1 all link this gene to a crucial S-phase-specific role, probably as a positive regulator of DNA synthesis.

The Waata community is among the indigenous Kenyan communities whose social, political, and economic organization has not been adequately studied. The objective of the study was to examine the impact of colonial policies on the history of the Waata people of Kilifi County in the period 1895-1963. The study was guided by the cultural interaction and identity formation theory. The study was conducted using the descriptive research design which offered a chronology of events as they unfolded over time. A qualitative approach was significant because it allowed an in-depth collection of data to ascertain the attitudes, feelings, and opinions concerning the theme under study. The study site was Kilifi County. The study targeted both males and females above 18 years within Kilifi County who were knowledgeable about the existence of the Waata people. Purposive and snowballing sampling techniques were used to select the sample for the study. One hundred and twenty-two participants were interviewed. The study used both primary and secondary data. Primary data was derived from the one-on-one interaction with participants using interview schedules and Key Informant Interviews, oral interviews, and focus group discussions. Question guides and questionnaires with open-ended responses were also used. Secondary data was obtained from critical analysis of books, articles, papers, thesis, and dissertations. Additionally, archival sources, particularly colonial documents, annual reports, correspondents, letters, diaries, and political record books related to the area under study were consulted. The findings of the study revealed that colonial policies impacted significantly on the history of the Waata forcing them to adapt to different lifestyles in order to survive cultural extinction. This adaptation was informed by the colonial labelling of traditional hunting communities like the Waata as poachers and the progressive government efforts to stop them from their traditional source of livelihood as well as their eviction from their indigenous habitats and creation of National Parks.

Percutaneous coronary angioplasty is a minimally invasive procedure aimed at unclogging a coronary artery with a low complication rate (with a serious complication rate of 3% to 7% and a mortality rate of 1.2%). Device entrapment during PCI is a rare but life-threatening complication that occurs in < 1% of PCIs and balloon entrapment comes second after coronary guidewires. We present the case of 68-years-old man, smoker, hypertensive and type2 diabetic that presents angina with evidence of ischemia on myocardial tomoscintigraphy and in whom the radial coronary angiography reveals a tight calcified mid LAD stenosis. During his PCI and after dilatation with an NC balloon 2.5 × 12 the latter refuses to deflate and remains trapped in the lesion with the appearance of pain and ST-elevation despite several attempts to dilute the product in the inflator and to burst it by overexpansion. Traction on the balloon resulted in the deep intubation of the guiding-catheter, which comes in contact with the trapped balloon, and the rupture of the latter’s hypotube, which remains inflated at the site of the lesion and mounted on the 0.014 guidewire. We put a second 0.014 guidewire distally in the LAD and twisted with the distal part of the first guidewire, then we introduced a second balloon 2.0 × 20 over the second guidewire until the distal part of the guiding-catheter and inflated to trap the stucked balloon. We gradually removed this emergency assembly that allowed us to retrieve the trapped balloon. The control injection revealed a thrombotic occlusion of the LAD treated by thrombectomy and anti-GPIIbIIIa followed by a DES 2.75 × 28 placement. The patient was discharged 48 hours later with a good LVEF. The possible balloon entrapment mechanisms are an acute recoil of a highly calcified lesion with compression of the incompletely deflated balloon, which seems to be the case in our patient, strangulation of the proximal balloon end by the guiding-catheter if the balloon is removed before complete deflation and break or bend of the hypotube. The solutions in case of undeflatable balloon entrapment are to dilute the product in the inflator, to burst it by overexpansion, to pierce it through a stiff guidewire (or through its other end on a Microcatheter or OTW balloon), to cut its outer part and let it empty passively, to introduce a second guide-wire and perform a Buddy-Balloon or to transfer the patient to Surgery. Material entrapment remains a rare but life-threatening complication, its eviction requires the choice of material size and gentle manipulations (small balloons in the event of a calcified lesion) and its management uses different techniques, the choice of which depends on the clinical and anatomical situation.

While social conflicts include forms of social conflict, causes of social conflict, and resolution of social conflicts. This study used descriptive qualitative method. The subjects of this research are by using three short stories, namely "pengunyah Sirih" by S Prsetyo Utomo, "Menjaga Perut" by Adek Alwi ", and" Ikan Terbang Kufah "by Triyanto Triwikromo. With the object of research is the intrinsic element, the form of social conflict, what causes social conflict and how to resolve social conflict. Data collection techniques used by researchers were by analyzing data from three short stories, namely "pengunyah Sirih" by S Prsetyo Utomo, "Menjaga Perut" by Adek Alwi ", and" Ikan Terbang Kufah "by Triyanto Triwikromo. In accordance with the objectives of the study, the results of this study are regarding the intrinsic element and social conflict. The form of social conflict contained in the short story namely "pengunyah Sirih" by S Prsetyo Utomo, "Menjaga Perut" by Adek Alwi ", and" Ikan Terbang Kufah "by Triyanto Triwikromo., which is about Arguing and Destruction. The cause of social conflict contained in the short story is "Pengunyah Sirih" by S Prsetyo Utomo, which is about a cow stolen by Sukro which is a slander from the Lurah to Sukro, "Menjaga Perut" the work of Adek Alwi, namely about Laila is experiencing pain and they are already longing for their three children in Jakarta, and "ikan terbang kufah" by Triyanto Triwikromo is about the Eviction and Blasting of Syeh Muso which will be blasted by Abu Abu at night for the sake of individuals. Settlement of social conflicts contained in the short story of Chewing Betel “pengunyah sirih "by S Prsetyo Utomo, namely by means of Sukro spitting on the left eye of a cow by using a painful betel leaf spit," menjaga perut "the work of Adek Alwi" resolution of social conflict by way of Abang accompany Laila on the couch the living room by accompanying Laila who was sick and waiting for news from her son, and "ikan terbang Kufah" by Triyanto Triwikromo to resolve the conflict by Kuffah throwing bombs to the bottom of the sea. Thus, theoretically the results of this study strengthen and support the theory of literary sociology, then the results of this study can be used as input for the author to further enhance the exploration of ideas by reflecting events and events in a literary work.Keywords: intrinsic element, social conflict, literary sociology.

Abstract. The problem of pedestrian facilities in urban areas in Indonesia is a pedestrian need that has not been met, both qualitatively and quantitatively. Pedestrian paths are built to limit human movement and avoid using lanes as a means of transportation. The informal sector activities that we often encounter in urban areas are street vendors, namely small-scale economic activities. To manage and develop the growing number of street vendors, the government issued Bandung City Regulation no. 04 of 2011 concerning the Composition and Guidelines of street vendors. The Bandung City Government revived 602 street vendors stalls on the Cicadas pedestrian area without any eviction efforts. Based on the description above, the authors are interested in raising the title, namely: "Study on the Effectiveness of Structuring Street Vendors on Pedestrian Paths, Jalan Cicadas, Bandung City". So the research question in this study is: "How is the effectiveness of structuring street vendors on the Cicadas pedestrian path based on pedestrian perceptions?". This research was conducted using a combined method of quantitative and qualitative methods (Mix Method Research). With the sampling technique, namely Probality Sampling using Simple Random Sampling, the number of research samples obtained was 100 respondents. Data collection techniques used in this study were questionnaires, interviews, and observations. The data analysis technique used in this research is descriptive analysis technique and validity test analysis technique and reliability test with Likert scale measurement. The results of this study on average indicate that respondents' opinions on the object of research generally state "Not Effective" on the condition of an existing field (Pedestrian Line) in the corridor of Jalan Jenderal Ahmad Yani (Cicadas).
Abstrak. Permasalahan fasilitas pejalan kaki di kawasan perkotaan di Indonesia merupakan kebutuhan pejalan kaki yang belum terpenuhi, baik secara kualitatif maupun kuantitatif. Jalur pejalan kaki dibangun untuk membatasi pergerakan manusia dan menghindari penggunaan jalur sebagai sarana transportasi. Kegiatan sektor informal yang paling sering kita jumpai di perkotaan adalah PKL, yaitu kegiatan ekonomi skala kecil. Untuk mengelola dan mengembangkan jumlah PKL yang terus bertambah, pemerintah mengeluarkan Peraturan Kota Bandung No. 04 Tahun 2011 tentang Susunan dan Pedoman PKL. Pemerintah Kota Bandung menghidupkan kembali 602 kios PKL di pedestrian Cicadas tanpa ada upaya penggusuran. berdasarkan uraian diatas, penulis tertarik untuk mengangkat judul, yaitu: “Kajian Efektivitas Penataan Pedagang Kaki Lima Pada Jalur Pedestrian Cicadas, Kota Bandung”. Maka pertanyaan penelitian dalam kajian ini adalah: “Bagaimana efektivitas penataan Pedagang Kaki Lima pada jalur pedestrian Cicadas didasarkan pada persepsi pejalan kaki?“. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan menggunakan suatu metode gabungan metode kuantitatif dan metode kualitatif (Mix Method Research). Dengan teknik pengambilan sampel yaitu Probalitiy Sampling dengan menggunakan Simple Random Sampling diperoleh jumlah sampel penelitian sebanyak 100 responden. Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah kuesioner, wawancara, observasi. Adapun teknik analisis data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah teknis analisis deskriptif dan teknik analisis uji validitas dan uji reabilitas dengan pengukuran skala likert. Hasil dari penelitian ini rata-rata menunjukkan bahwa, pendapat responden terhadap objek penelitian pada umumya menyatakan “Tidak Efektif” terhadap kondisi suatu eksisting dilapangan (Jalur Pedestrian) dikoridor jalan Jenderal Ahmad Yani (Cicadas).

Conflict between elephants and humans occurs almost every year in Pinggir District, Bengkalis Regency, Riau Province. This study aims to determine the characteristics of Human-Elephant conflict in Pinggir District, Bengkalis Regency and its mitigation techniques. Data collection was carried out by purposive sampling. Purposive sampling was conducted by interviewing respondents who had experienced conflicts with elephants. Based on the interviews results, the Human-Elephant conflict occur almost every year where in the 2000s there were many conflicts between elephants and humans and now in 2021 and 2022 there is a decline in elephant-human conflicts. This is because the elephants in Pinggir District have moved to other locations such as the Giam Siak Kecil enclave. The results of the interview also informed that only certain locations experienced conflict between elephants and humans, especially the paths that were often traversed by elephants. Mitigation techniques that are mostly done by the community in dealing with conflicts with elephants are the sounds of using firecrackers and cannons, evictions and gardening by the community and making elephant trenches for people who have strong capital.

The captured product was analyzed statistically by using (f and t-test). The current manners were profi tably applied to the investigation of the pharmaceutical establishment. The aim of this study is to determine which social agents are involved in the political debate on Twitter and whether the interpretive hegemony of actors that have traditionally been the most prominent is tempered by the challenge of framing shared with audiences. The relationship between the interpretations expressed and the profiles of participants is analyzed in comparison with the frames used by mainstream media. The chosen methodology combines content analysis and discourse analysis techniques on a sample of 1,504 relevant tweets posted on two political issues –the approval of the education law LOMCE and the evictions caused by the crisis, which have also been studied in the front pages of four leading newspapers in Spain. The results show a correlation between political issue singularities, frames and the type of discussion depending on the participants.

In this article, we will analyze how we built the research process of a collaborative ethnography with the Stop Evictions Granada 15M Movement (SEG15M). We will begin with a brief contextualization of the housing issues in Spain and the SEG15M movement to explain why we started the co-research experience with the movement. Next, we will clarify the composition, function, and main purposes of the ‘debate groups’ in our research, as well as their particular differences and dynamics concerning other qualitative techniques. Finally, we will focus on two main aspects, participation and communication, which emerged within the debates and later materialized into a transmedia project and the development of a radio soap opera. The latter is a product, and a process, of collaborative work that bridges communication and participation at the intra- and inter-group levels. It is a fictional story that emerges from the common lived experiences of the groups.

This article aims to analyze the emergence of challengers of mobilization in the case of a movement against the redevelopment plan of Rumah Susun Klender in East Jakarta using a field theory approach. Mobilization issues around housing in Indonesia are not new, but it is still dominated by evictions issues. Therefore, the Rumah Susun Klender case can be considered unique. Using the case study method, data were obtained through several observation techniques, such as document study and indepth interviews with 10 informants. The results of the analysis reveal that the transformation of people resistance into the emergence of Paguyuban Tandingan (rival organization) as challenger of mobilization is not merely caused by redevelopment plans. Indeed, it was generated by an initial contention (internal dynamics) that occurred between the residents and the Association of Apartment Owners and Occupants (P3SRS). The residents who are anti-redevelopment was consolidated by, and joined with, the rival organization to take over P3SRS’ authority as a governance unit to achieve one goal: cancelling the redevelopment plan.

Transgender is often one of the groups who are vulnerable to living unfit. This is due to its limitations in accessing various things such as education and employment. In addition, their families often don't accept them, even though the family is the strongest fortress in protecting transgender people from violence and oppression. This study looks at how the acceptance of transgender families in the family and identifies the typology of families in accepting transgender family members. This research is qualitative research with data collection techniques and in-depth interviews. The research location was at the Al Fatah Transgender Islamic Boarding Home and the Waria Crisis Center Community in Yogyakarta.The result of this study is that the existence of transgender people is still considered a disgrace to the family so that evictions still occur. The family form is like doing Rukyah, forced marriage. So, many transgender people end up leaving their families. In addition, the typology of families who accept the existence of transgender people can be seen from three factors: education, economy, and religious understanding. Thus, family acceptance is very important in transgender life.

In the capital city of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, climate change and environmental concerns are used to justify massive redevelopment projects in informal settlements located along the rivers Ozama and Isabela. Residents in such river communities negotiate the uncertainty of state planning under a new socio-environmentalism that prioritizes the environment over social concerns, while continuing to pursue bottom-up neighborhood planning despite the powerful rationality of <em>limpieza</em> (cleanliness), the pervasive techniques of responsibilization, and the celebratory spectacles of megaprojects. The uncertainty resulting from governance under socio-environmentalism produces ambivalence towards environmentcentered projects among residents. Drawing on oral histories and interviews with long-time community members, we suggest that residents engage in three ‘sensemaking strategies’ to process their ambivalence in the face of daily precarity, in particular the ongoing threat of evictions. Residents ‘keep up’ with the state and strategically utilize planning language to advocate for community priorities. They engage in practices of storytelling that reproduce a deep sense of community and provide a longer historical understanding of planning interventions. Finally, through verbal speculation and other ‘unsanctioned speech acts’ they analyze disruptions caused by socio-environmentalism, build solidarity with other communities, and think ahead despite uncertainty.

The paper explores the information potential and capabilities of the database and GIS system for systematic research on the localities of Yenisei Siberia in the mid-19th – early 20th centuries, with a focus on regional studies. The study examines Siberia as a full-fledged part of Russia and its Asian periphery. The Russian government changed the policy towards Siberia from minimal intervention to targeted economic colonization, involving voluntary migrations and the unification of the settlement structures in vast uninhabited spaces. In addition to the so-called river settlement structure (Yenisei region) or the nest settlement one (Priangara), the formation of a planned, geographically closed structure started. The paper highlights the gradual replacement of small settlements such as graveyards (‘pogost’), evictions (‘visel’), and single-yards (‘zaimka’) settlements with ordinary villages, the stratification of old-time residents’ space and the emergence of resettlement settlements, and the division of traditional settlements. This process includes increasingly remote territories of Siberia, such as the Yenisei North. The author demonstrates that the problems of space development and center-periphery relationships are relevant at the present time. The paper employs statistical, historical, geographical, and cartographic methods. Modern statistical analysis techniques reveal the spatial dynamics of the region's development. The reasons for the formation of the structure of the database hierarchy based on the geographical factor and the combination of information with interactive maps are under investigation. The paper describes the attribute tables of settlements, and plotting geodetic and hydrographic networks. The principles of dataset formation based on various reference books are outlined. The author concludes that the dataset has the potential to combine source-oriented and problem-oriented approaches, and it gives the possibility to place both historical and actual relevant data in a comprehensive information resource.

In the novel "Notes on Crazy People" by Han Gagas, published in Jakarta in October 2014 with the publisher PT Gramedia Pustaka Utama, there are 184 pages with 17 titles. After reading and sorting through the historical approach, the researcher found 4 titles to study, the titles are, The Journey of a Pair of Sparrows, The Building That Swallowed My Mother and Moon, Mother Again Sprinkled Flowers, and Records of Mad People. Here's the discussion. In the novel Han Gagas Notes of Crazy People, the meaning contained in it is relevant to real facts or events that have happened before, Han Gagas has succeeded in creating literary works in which there is history with data on major events such as historical cases regarding the 1965 riots, the May riots . 1998, social, political, economic and cultural movements. Securing systems’ main memory is important for building trusted data centers. To ensure memory security, encryption and integrity verification techniques update the security metadata (e.g., encryption counters and integrity trees) during memory data writes. Existing studies are optimistic about the effect of data writes on system performance since they regard all data writes as background operations. However, we show that security metadata updates significantly increase data write latency. High-latency data writes frequently fill up write buffers in the system, forcing the system to perform the writes in the critical path. As a result, performance-critical data reads need to wait for the execution of these writes, which increases data read latency and degrades system performance. In this paper, we propose SEED that improves the performance of secure memory systems by speculatively updating security metadata in the background before data writes arrive. To enable speculative updates, SEED predicts which dirty cache lines will be written to memory through natural evictions. We find that cache evictions depend on multiple factors. To decouple the dependencies for accurate predictions, we devise a two-step eviction prediction method based on our observation that the next eviction victim rarely changes in a set. The first step predicts which cache sets will evict cache lines, while the second step predicts which cache lines will be evicted by finding the next eviction victims in the sets. For predicted evictions, we develop a speculative updater to perform speculative updates. We analyze the invariants that must be followed by the updater to ensure the correctness of speculative updates. The updater rolls back the speculatively updated security metadata of inaccurate predictions. To reduce the rollback overhead, we devise a rollback batching and an update pausing optimization for the updater. Experimental results show that SEED reduces data write latency by 39.8%, data read latency by 44.9%, and improves performance by 40.0% on average compared with the state-of-the-art secure memory design.

The COVID-19 pandemic has shined a light on the importance of housing as a social determinant of health. To prevent millions of American renters from being evicted from their homes during the COVID-19 pandemic and potentially becoming homeless, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a temporary eviction ban order on September 4, 2020 that has currently been extended through June 30, 2021. This paper examines the rationale for the CDC temporary eviction ban order from a public health perspective. It then uses statistical techniques to explore the relationship between political and demographic variables and temporary eviction bans enacted in individual states during the pandemic. Results show a statistically significant relationship between political party control of the state legislature and temporary state eviction bans which suggests that partisanship has largely driven the use of temporary eviction bans as a policy response to COVID-19 at the state level.

Byte-addressable storage (BAS), such as persistent memory and CXL-SSDs, does not meet system designers’ expectations for data flushing and access granularity. Persistent CPU caches, enabled by recent techniques like Intel’s eADR and CXL’s Global Persistent Flush, can mitigate these issues without sacrificing consistency. However, the shared nature of CPU caches can lead to cache contention, which can result in cached data being frequently evicted to the BAS and reloaded into caches, negating the benefits of caching. If the BAS write granularity is larger than the cacheline eviction granularity, this can also lead to severe write amplification. In this paper, we identify, characterize, and propose solutions to the problem of contention in persistent CPU caches, which is largely overlooked by existing systems. These systems either simply assume that cached data is hot enough to survive cache evictions or use unsupported cache allocation techniques without testing their effectiveness. We also present FusionFS, a contention-resilient kernel file system that uses persistent CPU caches to redesign data update approaches. FusionFS employs an adaptive data update approach that chooses the most effective mechanism based on file access patterns during system calls and memory mapping accesses, minimizing BAS media writes and improving throughput. FusionFS also employs contention-aware cache allocation to minimize various types of cache contention. In North Jakarta, the bulldozed remnants of the April 11 (2016) eviction of Kampung Pasar Ikan presented a site of radical transformation and urban planning. The eviction was in part motivated by a Dutch-Indonesian alliance, to construct a 40 billion USD sea wall and reclaimed islands to prevent the city from slowly sinking. In this text we start by asking, how are people living in Pasar Ikan responding to and enacting their own futures through repair? What does repair in a landscape of complete disrepair look like? And how is history both erased and enacted in this process? We then move to West Kalimantan where a DIY drone collective makes aerial drone technology and trains groups to map land that they say is vulnerable to incursions by resource developers. We ask, how is the forest located, recognized and constituted by these and other cartographic practices? Whose time and in what time are forest boundaries set and reset by mapping techniques in West Kalimantan? How do these cartographies become artifacts that travel and influence how history is thought and practiced?

AbstractCompetent treatment techniques were explored to curb the environmental pollution of dye-laden wastewater. In the current study, eucalyptus biomass contemplated as agricultural waste is translated into eucalyptus graphitic activated carbon (EPGAC) using ZnCl2 at 600 °C in the N2 atmosphere. The present investigation illustrated awareness about the nature of EPGAC’s dye elimination by employing Direct Yellow 12 dye (DY12) as a model dye. EPGAC was characterized using multiple characterization tools such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Boehm titrations, pHzpc, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area analysis techniques. Electron micrographs disclosed the availability of high pore density for the adsorption of DY12 dyes. BJH analysis reported the distribution of mesopores having a 3 nm diameter on the EPGAC surface. Further, the surface area available for adsorption per gram of the adsorbent is estimated as 178.35 m2 employing BET analysis. XRD and Raman’s data revealed the graphitic nature of EPGAC. Influences of adsorbent parameters such as EPGAC mass, initial dye concentration, contact time, solution pH, and temperature on the eviction of DY12 by EPGAC were examined to achieve a deeper insight into the adsorption mechanism. The optimum EPGAC adsorbent dose was found to be 0.15 g. The equilibrium was attained at 120 min for DY12 dye. Pseudo-second-order kinetics entirely relates to the perfect fit associated with the investigational results. The aptness of the equilibrium data relevant to the Langmuir adsorption isotherm eventually recommends a maximum unilayer adsorption capacity of 42.01 mg/g for EPGAC. Thermodynamic studies further reveal the spontaneous, endothermic, and chemisorption nature of adsorption. Adsorbent viability was established through stability and recyclability studies carried out up to 5 run cycles with 0.15 g of EPGAC. Adsorption mechanisms were explained considering hydrogen bonding, π-π interactions, and electrostatic interactions, ultimately confirming the adsorption tendency displayed by EPGAC for the eviction of DY12 dye present in industrial wastewater.

This paper brings the conceptual and methodological apparatus of the relational approach to the emergent conversation on displaceability – which is a novel concept underscoring the perpetual risk in urban environments of potential eviction, highlighting the ever-present tension between belonging and upheaval in contemporary urban settings. Drawing from case studies in Tel-Aviv and occupied East Jerusalem, I delve into two distinct local real estate valuation mechanisms: Tel Aviv’s Standard-21, which assesses project feasibility, and Jerusalem’s Article-219, a directive for appraising unauthorized construction. Set against Tel Aviv’s market driven context and the Israeli occupation of East Jerusalem, these mechanisms elucidate the local nuances of displaceability. Together, these cases underscore how valuation techniques perpetuate displaceability as a consistent and normalized facet of urban development. Yet, the paper also demonstrates how displaceability engenders resistance, as the acceptance of displacement as an inevitable urban reality prompts potential displacement victims to utilize the same socio-technical tools pointed against them to challenge this reality. Beyond a mere global overview, this paper delves into how displaceability is shaped by specific local socio-technical conditions. By emphasizing these nuances, it unravels both the intricate influences of regional factors and the overarching global implications of displaceability.

Abstract Background Cytosine DNA methylation is widely described as a transcriptional repressive mark with the capacity to silence promoters. Epigenome engineering techniques enable direct testing of the effect of induced DNA methylation on endogenous promoters; however, the downstream effects have not yet been comprehensively assessed. Results Here, we simultaneously induce methylation at thousands of promoters in human cells using an engineered zinc finger-DNMT3A fusion protein, enabling us to test the effect of forced DNA methylation upon transcription, chromatin accessibility, histone modifications, and DNA methylation persistence after the removal of the fusion protein. We find that transcriptional responses to DNA methylation are highly context-specific, including lack of repression, as well as cases of increased gene expression, which appears to be driven by the eviction of methyl-sensitive transcriptional repressors. Furthermore, we find that some regulatory networks can override DNA methylation and that promoter methylation can cause alternative promoter usage. DNA methylation deposited at promoter and distal regulatory regions is rapidly erased after removal of the zinc finger-DNMT3A fusion protein, in a process combining passive and TET-mediated demethylation. Finally, we demonstrate that induced DNA methylation can exist simultaneously on promoter nucleosomes that possess the active histone modification H3K4me3, or DNA bound by the initiated form of RNA polymerase II. Conclusions These findings have important implications for epigenome engineering and demonstrate that the response of promoters to DNA methylation is more complex than previously appreciated.

It is widely suggested that migration is a key mechanism linking climate change to violent conflict, particularly through migration increasing the risks of conflict in urban destinations. Yet climate change also creates new forms of insecurity through distress migration, immobility and vulnerability that are prevalent in urban destination locations. Here we examine the extent and nature of human security in migration destinations and test whether insecurity is affected by length of residence and environmental hazards. The study develops an index measure of human security at the individual level to include environmental and climate-related hazards as well as sources of well-being, fear of crime and violence, and mental health outcomes. It examines the elements of human security that explain the prevalence of insecurity among recent and established migrants in low-income urban neighbourhoods. The study reports on data collected in Chattogram in Bangladesh through a survey of migrants (N = 447) and from qualitative data derived using photo elicitation techniques with cohorts of city planners and migrants. The results show that environmental hazards represent an increasing source of perceived insecurity to migrant populations over time, with longer-term migrants perceiving greater insecurity than more recent arrivals, suggesting lack of upward social mobility in low-income slums. Ill-health, fear of eviction, and harassment and violence are key elements of how insecurity is experienced, and these are exacerbated by environmental hazards such as flooding. The study expands the concept of security to encompass central elements of personal risk and well-being and outlines the implications for climate change.

The global production of fecal wastes is envisioned to reach a very high tonnage by 2030. Perilous handling and consequential exposition of human and animal fecal matter are inextricably linked with stunted growth, enteric diseases, inadequate cognitive skills, and zoonoses. Sludge treatment from sewage and water treatment processes accounts for a very high proportion of overall operational expenditure. Straightforward carbonization of sludges to generate biochar adsorbents or catalysts fosters a circular economy, curtailing sludge processing outlay. Biochars, carbonaceous substances synthesized via the thermochemical transformation of biomass, possess very high porosity, cation exchange capacity, specific surface area, and active functional sorption sites making them very effective as multifaceted adsorbents, promoting a negative carbon emission technology. By customizing the processing parameters and biomass feedstock, engineered biochars possess discrete physicochemical characteristics that engender greater efficaciousness for adsorbing various contaminants. This review provides explicit insight into the characteristics, environmental impact considerations, and SWOT analysis of different sludges (drinking water, fecal, and raw sewage sludge) and the contemporary biochar production, modification, characterization techniques, and physicochemical characteristics, factors influencing the properties of biochars derived from the aforestated sludges, along with the designing of chemical reactors involved in biochar production. This paper also manifests a state-of-the-art discussion of the utilization of sludge-derived biochars for the eviction of toxic metal ions, organic compounds, microplastics, toxic gases, vermicomposting approaches, and soil amelioration with an emphasis on biochar recyclability, reutilization, and toxicity. The practicability of scaling up biochar generation with multifaceted, application-accustomed functionalities should be explored to aggrandize socio-economic merits.
