Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate when and how people working in collaboration could be benefitted by an exploratory search task, specifically focussing on team size and its effect on the outcomes of such a task. Design/methodology/approach – The paper investigates the effects of team sizes on exploratory search tasks using a lab study involving 68 participants – 12 individuals, ten dyads, and 12 triads. In order to assess various factors during their exploratory search sessions, an evaluation framework is synthesized using relevant literature. The framework consists of measures for five groups of quantities relevant to exploratory search: information exposure, information relevancy, information search, performance, and learning. Findings – The analyses on the user study data using the proposed framework reveals that while individuals working alone cover more information than those working in teams, the teams (dyads and triads) are able to achieve better information coverage and search performance due to their collaborative strategies. In many of the measures, the triads are found to be even better than the dyads, demonstrating the value of adding a collaborator to a search process with multiple facets. Originality/value – The findings shed light on not only how collaborative work could help in achieving better results in exploratory search, but also how team sizes affect specific aspects – information exposure, information relevancy, information search, performance, and learning – of exploratory search. This has implications for system designers, information managers, and educators.

The performance means the behavior and the resultant measured based on certain activities and duties. Enterprises performance could be measured thanks to indicators that express the quality of its activities. While, for individuals and groups, it is hard to identify the link between their performance and that of the company. Performance evaluation is an instrument through which the employees within the organization can reflect, discuss and change their work method that influences the organizational effectiveness. The focus of this paper is to argue that effective performance, feedback, and employee training are necessary for the success of an organization, and at the same time the development plan to support the employees in achieving the best possible results is necessary too. The employees’ training in Kosovo’s enterprises is closely related to the organization, and the planning of employees in a way to so they are prepared at a national level and the attempt to exchange employees and train them in international level. This would affect the effective performance and cultures exchanged.

This paper presents the analysis of the advantages of applying ISO 14001 system in an environmental protection management system. The environmental protection management system which is not licensed, i.e., compatible with the principles and standard pre-conditions considerably increases the plausibility for ecological risk. There are some issues that remain to be solved in the areas which are not expressed by financial values only but also have a non-financial character with the aim of expanding markets, company image improvement and improvement of the environmental performance indicators. By improving a company?s environmental management system efficiency we expect to achieve the minimization and elimination of damaging influences on the environment which are the consequence of company?s activities. A case study in the Oil Refinery Belgrade (RNB) analyses the implementation of the standard ISO 14001:2004 into its environment protection management system, particularly emphasizing the company?s own way of evaluating the environment aspects with the aim of establishing results of ecological performances indicators improvement. The average values of the first ecological indicator of the plant, the total amount of the waste waters in m3 per a ton of product, clearly show the downturn trend, which is confirmed by the proportional reduction of the second ecological plant indicator, that is by the flocculants consumption (Al2(SO4)3, Na2CO3) in kg per m3 of the waste water of the Oil Refinery of Belgrade for the given period 2008-2010. Case study RNB confirms the improvement of environmental performances using the ISO 14001 standard.

This paper investigates the relationship between ICT operational risk management (ORM) and the performance of an SME. To achieve this, this research investigated five specific elements, namely: the principal causes of ICT ORM failure in an SME; change management requirements; characteristic(s) of business information; challenges posed by new ORM solutions; and evaluation models for understanding the value of ICT ORM in SMEs. Following a literature review, an electronic survey consisting of closed ended questions was developed. This was distributed at a financial company in the Eastern Cape and 107 responses were gathered. Factor analysis was used as a data reduction technique to reduce the large number of related variables to a more manageable number. The empirical evidence presented indicated that a significant proportion of the aforementioned variables have impact on the performance of an SME. Therefore, this paper indicates that there is a strategic impact of ICT ORM on SME performance. Keywords: SME Performance, Operational Risk Management, Information Communication Technology

Optical links are rapidly becoming pervasive in the readout chains of particle physics detector systems. Silicon photonics (SiPh) stands as an attractive candidate to sustain the radiation levels foreseen in the next-generation experiments, while guaranteeing, at the same time, multi-Gb/s and energy-efficient data transmission. Integrated electronic drivers are needed to enable SiPh modulators’ deployment in compact on-detector front-end modules. A current-mode logic-based driver harnessing a pseudo-differential output stage is proposed in this work to drive different types of SiPh devices by means of the same circuit topology. The proposed driver, realized in a 65 nm bulk technology and already tested to behave properly up to an 8 MGy total ionizing dose, is hybridly integrated in this work with a lumped-element Mach–Zehnder modulator (MZM) and a ring modulator (RM), both fabricated in a 130 nm silicon-on-insulator (SOI) process. Bit-error-rate (BER) performances confirm the applicability of the selected architecture to either differential and single-ended loads. A 5 Gb/s data rate, in line with the current high energy physics requirements, is achieved in the RM case, while a packaging-related performance degradation is captured in the MZM-based system, confirming the importance of interconnection modeling.

Risk occurance in the supply chain is unavoidable. Basically, a great portion of these risks comes from suppliers. Timely identification of the risks and using appropriate preventive actions to reduce the probability and impact of their occurrence play a significant role in increasing organizational efficiency, improving product quality and satisfying customers. Developing a systematic and efficient mechanism is a prerequisite for properly identifying and assessing the supply chain risks and making correct decision. Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) is a known engineering technique and risk assessment tool to define, identify, and eliminate potential failures and errors in the products, processes, projects, and services. In this paper, FMEA approach is combined with multi-criteria decision-making techniques to make a systematic mechanism for assessing supply chain risks and prioritizing candidate flour suppliers in Sahar bread industrial group. In the proposed model, Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is used to determine the risk’s weights and VIKOR method is applied for assessing and ranking the suppliers. Results shew that among the identified risks, “cost risk group” with the weight "0.43" is the most important. Therefor the company officials have to adopt appropriate policies, carefully, to deal with this risk. Moreover, final evaluation of flour suppliers in the company indicates that according to all criteria, the fourth supplier achieves the highest priority and it is selected as the most qualified flour supplier for the company.

Abstract The development of new power generation technologies are necessary to meet growing energy demands and emission requirements. The supercritical carbon dioxide (S-CO2) cycle is one such technology; it has relatively high efficiency, potential to enable 100% carbon capture, and compact components. The S-CO2 cycle is adaptable to almost all of the existing power producing methods including fossil, solar, and nuclear technologies. However, it is known that the best combination of the operating conditions, equipment, working fluid and cycle layout determine the maximum achievable efficiency of a cycle. Impurities in the cycle have some effect on the S-CO2 power cycle as presented in our previous work. The effect of impurities is positive or negative and affects all components. The effect of mixture compositions on the techno-economic evaluation is important information for the global understanding of the effect of mixtures on the S-CO2 power cycle. This paper focuses on the techno-economic evaluation of a hypothetical power plant with the S-CO2 power cycle. Two cases are considered for techno-economic evaluation. The difference between these cases is in the heat source and the associated heat exchanger (PCHE and shell and tube heat exchanger). Cost estimation was performed for three indicators (the levelized cost of electricity, the internal rate of return, and the net present value), which are important for economic viability and the rate of return of the project.

This paper describes the results to date of a study to quantify the exhaust emissions and performance characteristics of 20% soy methyl ester biodiesel blends (B20) in diesel locomotives representative of a typical commuter transit fleet. Testing is performed with #2 diesel summer blend, #2 diesel winter blend, ultra low sulfur diesel (ULSD) summer blend, ULSD winter blend and B20 blends with each of these fuels. Tests are performed on two different diesel locomotive types to determine the differences in performance and emissions between older and newer locomotive engines when operating on biodiesel blends. Specifically, tests are performed on a GP40FH-2 locomotive equipped with an EMD 16-645 engine manufactured from a 1960’s design and a recently manufactured ALSTOM PL42AC locomotive equipped with an EMD 16-710 engine. The tests are being performed in two phases. The first phase of the project is performed by operating the diesel engines statically (using a load bank) over the full test matrix of 8 fuels. During the static testing phase, brake specific exhaust emissions and fuel consumption are computed for each fuel blend using the line-haul and switcher duty cycles as outlined in the CFR Part 40 Title 92 Federal Test Procedure. Each fuel/locomotive test combination is performed 3 times to ensure repeatability. The second phase of the project consists of mobile in-use emissions testing using a simulated, mobile duty cycle based on actual commuter rail routes. To accurately quantify the exhaust emissions, measurements are made using a Sensors SEMTECH-D mobile emissions analyzer to measure CO, CO2, NO2, NO, O2, and total unburned hydrocarbons (HCs), along with a Wager 6500RR Railroad Opacity Meter. Instantaneous fuel consumption is monitored using two AW Company JV-KG positive displacement flow meters, which measure the supply and return fuel flow rate, respectively.

Building America (BA) partner McStain Neighborhoods built the Discovery House in Loveland, Colorado, with an extensive package of energy-efficient features, including a high-performance envelope, efficient mechanical systems, a solar water heater integrated with the space-heating system, a heat-recovery ventilator (HRV), and ENERGY STAR™ appliances. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and Building Science Consortium (BSC) conducted short-term field-testing and building energy simulations to evaluate the performance of the house. These evaluations are utilized by BA to improve future prototype designs and to identify critical research needs. The Discovery House building envelope and ducts were very tight under normal operating conditions. The HRV provided fresh air at a rate of about 75 cfm (35 l/s), consistent with the recommendations of ASHRAE Standard 62.2. The solar hot water system is expected to meet the bulk of the domestic hot water (DHW) load (>83%), but only about 12% of the space-heating load. DOE-2.2 simulations predict whole-house source energy savings of 54% compared to the BA Benchmark [1]. The largest contributors to energy savings beyond McStain’s standard practice are the solar water heater, HRV, improved air distribution, high-efficiency boiler, and compact fluorescent lighting package.

Hydrocarbons transported in transmission pipelines contain solid particles with micro-attached water. Subjected to flow conditions, these particles may have sufficient density to reach the pipe floor and enable bacteria growth and local Under-Deposit Corrosion (UDC), with this form of corrosion being one of the principal threats to the integrity of oil and gas transmission pipelines. NACE International has published a variety of UDC related standard practices to manage corrosion in the oil industry such NACE 61114, but few of them are representative of, or applicable to, low water cut hydrocarbon transmission pipelines. Further, there are presently no industry recognized key performance indicators (KPIs) suitable for managing UDC in low water cut hydrocarbon transmission pipelines. Enbridge (the “Company”) operates North America’s largest interconnected liquid hydrocarbon transmission pipeline network. For the purposes of this paper, when the word ‘transmission’ is used to modify ‘crude oil’, ‘hydrocarbons’, or ‘pipelines’, it implies medium to long distance transport (100’s to 1000’s of km) as well as clean, “refinery-ready” crude oil (oil containing less than 0.5% sediment and water). This quality of oil renders it generally non-corrosive at pipeline operating conditions. However, if water wet particulates accumulate on the pipe floor, it can lead to UDC. The Company collects sludge samples produced during pigging operations on a regular basis to establish the composition of these materials and quantify bacterial population/activity. These solids represent an amalgamation of material removed from the pipe floor, and thus can be used as an indicator of the UDC threat in the pipeline. This paper builds upon previous work of the Company [1] by considering a larger data set in order to generate a more meaningful assessment of bacteria population/activity and provide better correlations with crystalline compounds, water content and elements found in the sludge. This paper presents these data and associated statistical analysis, and proposes KPIs for evaluating the UDC threat based on numerous variables, including in-line inspection Magnetic Flux Leak (MFL) data (through signal to signal corrosion growth rates), sludge analysis, flow conditions and pipeline operation; this paper also suggests mitigation activities and intervals relative to these KPIs. Personnel involved in pipeline integrity management (e.g. field operations, technical and management staff) may find the concepts, strategies and correlations presented herein to be useful in developing their own UDC management programs.

The Osbra (Oleoduto Sa˜o Paulo–Brasi´lia) System is one of the main pipeline systems for Petrobras Transportes S. A. - Transpetro and its function is to carry gasoline, diesel oil and liquefied petroleum gas throughout the Midwest region of Brazil. Since the beginning of the operation of Osbra in 1996, the Environmental Management System (EMS) has evolved following the development of the company, nationally and globally. The basis of environmental management is ISO 14001, in which the system has been certified since 2001. The evolution of the management system has significant marks, among which we highlight the Program for Excellence in Environmental Management and Safety, the Program Process Safety and the Project on Excellence. The positive performance of the EMS is demonstrated in the excellent performance of indicators, such as, zero spills from pipeline and one of the best evaluations in the Program of the Evaluation of Environmental Management for the Company. This paper provides a review of this initiative, including the main processes, programs, difficulties, solutions, tools and indicators that contributed to the success in over fourteen years of operation of the Osbra System.

In order to obtain full information on the high frequency performance of embedded passive elements, we design test elements group (TEG) substrates and compare the simulation result with measured data. S-parameters of spiral inductors embedded in low temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) substrates are simulated using high frequency structure simulator (HFSS), microwave studio (MWS) and advanced design simulator (ADS). Then effective inductance and Q factors are calculated from S-parameters after de-embedding process. Measurements of S-parameters are performed using a vector network analyzer in the frequency range up to 15 GHz. The simulation result with dimensional data measured by laser microscope and X-lay microscope is in good agreement with the experimental result. It is suggested that the simulation results can be applied to the design of system-in-a-package (SiP) substrate directly without making TEG.

The United States Department of Defense (DoD) is continually looking for ways to improve test and evaluation techniques to ensure systems meet military requirements prior to acquisition. Recently, the DoD has been pursuing the use of statistical methods to improve test and evaluation. This paper highlights statistical methodologies used by the Air Force Test Center to improve aircraft propulsion system Modeling and Simulation (M&S) efforts. The US Air Force has a long history of using M&S (more than 55 years) during aircraft test and evaluation. In the past, M&S usage was primarily in the aircraft performance and flying qualities areas. Now advancing technology and complex integration are resulting in increased M&S use across broader spectrum of technical disciplines, including propulsion. During propulsion testing, models are used to increase system knowledge in T&E areas which include: Test Planning, Execution, Data Analysis and Evaluation. This paper highlights the 412 Test Wing at Edwards AFB first steps to improve aircraft propulsion system T&E through the implementation of statistically defensible model development techniques. Specifically, this paper will provide an example of typical engineer model development strategies based on past experience, system knowledge, relevant physics and subjective evaluations to determine variables used and structure of the model. This paper will also provide insight into a number of statistics-based approaches including stepwise regression, backwards elimination, the inadequacy of using R-squared and an examination into the effects of mulit-collinearity. However, the focus of this paper is on how Information Theory and Akaike’s Information Criteria (AIC) can be easily applied to compare a variety of models and determine the best model available. This paper presents an example of these model development methods applied during a development of a predictive model used for evaluating thrust response of an aircraft engine with a new digital engine control. A case will be made that statistical approaches provide a more mathematically rigorous approach for model selection as compared to traditional approaches based on engineering judgment.
