Eugene O' Neill, an American playwright was born into a troubled and an upset family on October 16, 1888. Eugene O’ Neill had a quite precarious, wobbly and uneven adolescence as his elder brother was an affirmed alcoholic whereas his mom was a drug addict. This research paper analyzes the alienation, dilemma and the futile struggle of man in the quest of his identity. O'Neill followed the course of a superior and advanced writer looking for a profound focus in the entirety of his significant works. His perspective on humankind in his dramatizations is basically sad and heartbreaking. The author needed to cause man to feel free from all worries and inhale outside fresh air and build up a feeling of having a place in the general public in which he lived. However, it was impractical.

Reading and analyzing Paula Vogel’s plays, the readers can attest that she achieves success in drama or theater because she is passionate about theater. Vogel is a modern American playwright who won the 1998 Pulitzer Prize for drama. Her success and insight in playwriting or in adapting do not come all of a sudden; she is influenced by many writers. Vogel is influenced by many American dramatists, including Eugene O’ Neill, Arthur Miller, Tennessee Williams, and Edward Albee, and by other non-American writers, including August Strindberg, Anton Chekhove, and Bertolt Brecht. Certainly, there were female playwrights who wrote preeminent plays and they influence Vogel as well. Nevertheless, dramas by female writers, as a matter of fact, remain marginalized. This paper focuses on the influence of some female playwrights on Vogel.

Long Day´s Journey Into Night. Även i  Long Day´s Journey Into Night är alkoholisten en tydlig mottyp.

For that I have chosen Doris Alexander’s Eugene O’Neill’s last plays: Separating art from autobiography and Stephen A Black´s Eugene O’Neill: Beyond Mourning and tragedy. The main question in this paper will be: what is the picture of Eugene O´Neill that Norén portrays in the play Och ge oss skuggorna.

This work aims at analyzing the dramatic action and the characters tragic ethos in the trilogy Mourning Becomes Electra, focusing on the protagonist Lavinia Mannon. Our research corpus, which was written by Eugene O Neill and first performed in 1931, is a recreation of Aeschylus trilogy, the Oresteia, which presents a reading of the myth of the House of Atreus, whose line is cursed by acts of hate and vengeance. This study starts by taking into account the myth concept and its relations to Greek tragedy, as long as Freudian psychoanalysis, in the Modern times. The investigation about the concepts of action and ethos is based on Aristotle s Poetics (2005), Hegel s Aesthetics (2004), along with the studies of Raymond Williams (2002) and Sandra Luna (2005, 2008, 2012), as theoretical support. By creating a psychological drama, O Neill goes deeply into the character s psyche, presenting themselves struggling with impulses and passions repressed by their Puritan morality. Lavinia, the modern Electra, faces a personal drama, since she has a sickly love desire for her father, Ezra, is jealous of her mother, Christine, and represses her desire for Adam Brant, Christine s lover. Lavinia accuses her adulteress mother of having murdered Ezra, and seeks vengeance with the help of her brother, Orin, culminating with Christine s suicide. Orin, taken by guilt and remorse for having contributed to his mother s death, also succumbs to suicide. In order to maintain the Mannons secrets, Lavinia, as the last member of the family, seeks punishment for herself, condemned to endure a tormented existence, haunted by her antecessor s ghosts and recluse at her own house.

Eugene O''Neill''s fascination with the East and Taoism is apparent in various ways. In 1928, he realized his life- long fantasy with the East by taking a cruise to China. In 1937, he built a Chinese-style residence at Danville which he named "Tao House." In a 1932 letter, moreover, he stated that "the mysticism of Lao-tse & Chuang-Tzu interested me more than other Oriental writings." Among all of his plays, Marco Millions is unique because it is fraught with a mystic Taoist temper. It is also a crucial work that shows his fascination and understanding of Taoist ideas. Therefore, this thesis will focus on Marco Millions and its affinities with Taoism. This study is composed of four chapters. The first chapter introduces the the thesis, explains the decision to use an in-depth anaysis of one play, Marco Millions, and explores Taoist influence on O''Neill''s life and art. The second chapter attempts to clarify some Taoist notions which are revalent to O''Neilll. This chapter will explain Taoism in terms of cosmology, philosophy of life and political philosophy, and finally concludes with an analysis of the similarities between Taoism and O''Neill''s philosophical ideas. In the third chapter, the play of Marco Millions will be anaylzed in the light of Taoism. Broadly speaking, th main theme of the play explicitly reveals Taoist vision of life and death. Its dramatic structure coincidentally resembles Taoist notion of cycles. And the characterization of its main characters reflects Taoist principle of non-action. The fourth chapter contains the findings and conclusions of this study.
