AbstractSerology (ELISA and immunoblot) using native glycoproteins, affinity purified glycoproteins, and a recombinant antigen is known to be highly specific toTaenia soliumcysticercosis in humans and pigs. These techniques were applied for dogs in the highly endemic area of cysticercosis in Papua (Irian Jaya), Indonesia. Analysis of dog sera by both ELISA and immunoblot revealed 7 of 64 dogs were highly positive. Examination of two sero-positive dogs revealed cysticerci ofT. soliumin the brain and heart of these dogs. Mitochondrial DNA analysis confirmed that they were the same asT. soliumpreviously confirmed from pigs and biopsies from local people from Irian Jaya. It is suggested that the life cycle ofT. soliummay be completed not only between humans and pigs but also between humans and dogs.

The people of Indonesia have historically used crocodiles for a variety of non-commercial purposes. In the past ten years, a commercial collection from the wild almost threatened the population status. As pressure on the commercial hunting continuous, the successful conservation of Indonesian crocodiles will depend on the constant monitoring in the wild. Irian Jaya is one of several islands in Indonesia which historically accommodate an unknown number of commercial crocodiles such as Crocolylus porosus. Althorough monitoring on the C. porosus status in Barusam Gasawi, Buruai Garawa, Kamabu rivers, and Suwiki lake located in Kaimana and Arguni Bay, Irian Jaya had been conducted since 1990 and continued in 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1996, and 1998. The surveys techniques were conducted night count method and guided by a 1: 100.000 map and GPS. A statistical analysis was performed on SAS using proc regression and proc mean. A significant result has only been noted in Suwiki Lake, where was the magnitude of the mean trend in density was 109 percent.

AbstractPuncak Jaya, Irian Jaya, Indonesia, contains the only remaining tropical glaciers in East Asia. The extent of the ice masses on Puncak Jaya has been mapped from high-resolution IKONOS satellite images acquired on 8 June 2000 and 11 June 2002. Exclusive of Southwall Hanging Glacier, the ice extent on Puncak Jaya was 2.326 km2 and 2.152 km2 in 2000 and 2002, respectively. From 2000 to 2002, the Puncak Jaya glaciers lost a surface area of 0.174 km2 or 7.48% of their 2000 ice extent. Comparison of the IKONOS-based glacier extents with previous glacier extents demonstrates a continuing reduction of ice area on Puncak Jaya. By 2000, ice extent on Puncak Jaya had reduced by 88% of its maximum neoglacial extent. Between 1992 and 2000 Meren Glacier disappeared entirely. All remaining ice masses on Puncak Jaya continue their retreat from their neoglacial maxima. Comparison of 2000/2002 ice extents with previous extents suggests that these glaciers have not experienced accelerating rates of retreat during the last half of the 20th century. If the recession rates observed from 2000 to 2002 continue, the remaining ice masses on Puncak Jaya will melt within 50 years.

Melanesian West Papuans have been seeking refuge in Papua New Guinea since Indonesia annexed the province of Irian Jaya in 1962. The slowness of the Papua New Guinean government to respond to the 12,000 who crossed the border in 1984 paved the way for subsequent policy of minimal assistance so as not to jeopardize national security, by antagonizing Indonesia or by exacerbating the jealously of local people. As in other places, the long-term effect for refugees is likely to be social and economic marginalization, combined with insecure residential status.

AbstractThe small waterstriders of the subfamily Trepobatinae have radiated extensively on New Guinea and in surrounding archipelagos. All of the marine forms of the subfamily are found in this region, with the exception of one monotypic genus occurring on brackish water in the eastern tropical Pacific. The present study, the fourth in a series of reports dealing with Melanesian Trepobatinae, covers these regional marine taxa. The tribe Stenobatini, proposed in Part 1 of this series to hold the genera Stenobates Esaki, type-genus, plus Rheumatometroides Hungerford and Matsuda, and Stenobatopsis gen. n. (as undescribed genus 2), is revised, two new genera are proposed, and keys to genera and species are provided, followed by synonymies, diagnoses and discussion of the constituent genera. The following new taxa are proposed within the Stenobatini: Pseudohalobates gen. n., monobasic, type-species S. inobonto sp. n. from Indonesia (Celebes, Moluccas, Talaud Archipelago, Biak and Yapen islands, and Vogelkop Peninsula of Irian Jaya), and the Philippines (southern Mindanao); Stenobatopsis gen. n., monobasic, type-species S. stygius sp. n. from Halmahera; Thetibates gen. n., type-species Rheumatometroides serena Lansbury, from northern Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands; Rheumatometroides kikori sp. n. from the Kikori delta of southern Papua New Guinea; R. insularis papar n. ssp. from Sabah, north Borneo; R. sele sp. n. from the Vogelkop Peninsula of Irian Jaya; R. wabon sp. n. from Biak Island; Stenobates fakfak sp. n. from the Vogelkop Peninsula of Irian Jaya; S. kamojo sp. n. from Biak Island, Salawati Island, Yapen Island, and the Vogelkop Peninsula of Irian Jaya; S. kasim sp. n. from Salawati Island; S. labuha sp. n. from Bacan and Halmahera; S. langoban sp. n. from Palawan; S. sangihe sp. n. from the Sangihe Archipelago; and S. zamboanga sp. n. from Mindanao. Other nomenclatural changes: Rheumatometroides carpentaria (Polhemus & Polhemus), comb. n.; Rheumatometroides insularis insularis (J. AbstractA preliminary study to detect human worm carriers of Taenia solium in Papua (Irian Jaya), Indonesia was carried out using stool examinations for the detection of copro-antigens and adult proglottids after chemotherapy, and confirmation by mitochondrial DNA analysis using expelled proglottids and metacestodes developed in NOD/Shi-scid mice from eggs of expelled proglottids. Approximately 8.6% of the local population in Kama (5/58), 1 km from the local capital city centre, Wamena, were confirmed to harbour adult T. solium using these techniques.

A new hymenosomatid crab, Chartocinus rarus n. gen. n. sp., is described from coastal waters in western Papua (formerly Irian Jaya) in Indonesia. The new genus superficially resembles Amarinus Lucas, 1980, but can easily be distinguished by its subquadrate third maxillipeds with the merus produced along the anteroexternal edge, elongate ambulatory legs, elongate male thoracic sternum, short male pleon without distinct intercalated plates on somite 5, and a short male first gonopod in which the inner margin is distinctly bilobed.
