"Some New Constructions of the Identitary Imaginary – A Case Study. The starting point of the present research is based mainly on the experience of working with young people of Romanian origin, more specifically, university students, who live and study abroad, and concerns their self-perception at the level of their identy and some possible characteristics of their imaginary identity. The theoretical aspect of this research can be divided in two as follows: a general part, focusing on the theory of migration, the ethnic language/heritage language and the new identity typologies resulting from the current economic and political state of affairs and a second part, structured according to the coordinates of the collective and personal imaginary. The practical aspect is based, on the one hand, on the answers these students offered to some questionnaires administered for a period of seven years and, on the other hand, on a series of compositions written by the students in the form of ""open letters to Romania"", as an assignment for their Romanian language course on the occasion of the National Day of Romania, collected over the last three years. I will try to analyse both the answers to the questionnaires and their ""letters"", from the perspective of the above mentioned theory, with the explicit purpose of extracting some characterisctics. Keywords: migration, ethnic language, heritage language, imaginary identity, identity perception, identity typology, linguistic imaginary "

The aim of this paper is to analyze the processes of formation of Latgale’s territorial identity during the age of globalization in the last 20 years. Research was carried out using the latest data of qualitative research of the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of University of Latvia (the thematic research of Latvian Science Council’s project "Political development of the nation's self-confi dence after restoration of Latvian independence: Trends and Factors," head of project: Inese Runce, 2009-2012) and the latest theoretical insights of territorial identity construction processes under the impact of globalization and glocalization. On the basis of analysis of the socio-political processes and the experience of other countries, it must be emphasised that the placemaking is an important political process, not only at national but also at sub-regional level. Regional authorities should be able to offer a specifi c political vision, not only to the national power authorities, but also to the main bearers of regional identity - the people in regions. As it is shown by the recent studies, during the past 20 years in Latvia, the regional identity manifests itself only in Latgale where it is alive and vibrant, and the care and preservation and making of identity comes directly from the very bearers of this identity. Regional authorities, in collaboration with local NGOs, experts on culture, etc. must also contribute to the internal integration of the region, where each municipality and each form of local identity has its own recognized place and function, creating diverse forms of sustainable regional communities and regional identities. Regional identity is not exclusive and is able to unite different religious, ethnic, linguistic groups in a single whole entity. Over the past twenty years the process of formation of Latgale regional identity can be divided into three stages: 1. 90s of 20th century – the stage of denial of regional identity. In this decade the preservation and construction of Latgale regional identity is carried out only by few individuals or interest groups: writers, researchers, artists, local intellectuals who are mainly based in the circles of local intellectuals at Rezekne University College, as well as indirectly Latgale Research Institute of Daugavpils University; 2. The fi rst decade of 2000s - a gradual increase of awareness of regional identity. During the period this has been a gradual growth of awareness of regional identity and its development process. "Latgale radio”, Latgalian music groups are being launched, also the extensive scientific and political debate on the status of Latgale language started, socio-linguistic research projects initiated and a new non-governmental organizations established, the first portals in Latgalian as well the new initiative of regional municipalities are being launched; 3. 2010 to 2013 - analyzing the last three years of political and intellectual life trends, it can be argued that a qualitatively new stage in the recognition of regional identity and its construction process has been created: current political debate before and after the elections of 11th Saeima and the language referendum, discussions on the role of Latgalian as regional language, the National Development plan (NDP), development of the structural budget plans. However, it is clear that those spring sprouts must be protected, due to the fact that the strong centralizing tendencies in the Latvian political culture still exist.

Some scholars have recently suggested that the concept of diaspora should be regarded as a type of identity or consciousness instead of as a transnational ethnic community. While it is undeniable that some dispersed ethnic populations identify as diasporic peoples, older “economic diasporas“ sometimes have lost their transnational social cohesion and do not have a diasporic consciousness. I illustrate this by examining the experiences of Japanese Americans, an important part of the “Japanese diaspora“ of Japanese descendants (Nikkei) sca ered throughout the Americas. Because they have become assimilated in the United States over the generations, they no longer maintain any notable diasporic identi fication with the ethnic homeland or to other Japanese descent ethnic communities in the Americas. Even when they encounter Nikkei from other countries, national cultural diff erences make it difficult for them to develop a diasporic identity as Japanese descendants with a common cultural heritage or historical experiences.

Since the existence of humanity, individuals have moved from one place to another for various reasons and in search of better living conditions. This is the case of the Hútus and Tutsis of Rwanda and Burundi who, because of the ethnic and political conflicts in which they are immersed, have moved to places where they enjoyed relative stability, as in the case of Mozambique. In this perspective, the text aims to reflect on immigration taking into account the ethnic issue, starting from the assumption that immigrants can lose or gain a new identity in the place of arrival. For the analysis of the text, it will be based on the push-pull individualist theory defended by Ernest Ravenstein, and later by Everett Lee and the structuralist theory of the transnationalist approach. However, there are many difficulties faced by immigrants, even if they are of a different ethnic origin, who feel obliged to assimilate part of the Mozambican culture in order to feel integrated within the welcoming society.

Although the existence of internal ethnic diversity within Deaf communities is recognized by several authors, there has been less analysis of the impact of the ethnicity of marriage partners on the development and transmission of identity within Deaf families. This paper addresses language use and crossgenerational identity transmission in ethnic minority or ethnically mixed families set up by Deaf spouses living in Oradea (Romania). The research conducted in the Deaf community of Oradea is based on a survey of ethnic Hungarian Deaf community members (including ethnic Romanian spouses), lifepath interviews with selected Deaf individuals, and family case studies. The research results denote that in the case of Deaf people living in ethnically homogenous marriages who have graduated from a special school in Hungarian language, the transmission of Hungarian identity, knowledge of Hungarian sign language/oral language tends to be a natural, undisturbed process. However, if one of the spouses is of Romanian ethnicity, the language of communication within the family will probably be Romanian sign language/oral language. On the other hand, in families where both minority and majority ethnic family members, Deaf and hearing, are present, complex, multifaceted patterns of linguistic communication may operate, favoring specific multicultural ways of developing and transmitting identity.

The article is devoted to the study of the ethnic component of the identity of the Kazakhs at the beginning of the 20th century on the basis of the works of Alikhan Bukeikhan. The article considers internal and external factors that influenced the development of the ethnic identity of the Kazakhs. Particular attention is paid to the problem of the plurality of Kazakh identities, the study of various components of identity, the mechanisms of their formation and manifestation. The authors for the first time presented a comprehensive description of the identity of the Kazakhs at the beginning of the 20th century. The theoretical and methodological basis of the study includes the ideas about the identity of B. Anderson, F. Bart, E. Hobsbaum. The main content of the study is the analysis of the scientific works of Alikhan Bukeikhan, in which the idea of the role of "Alash" in the revival of the national identity of the Kazakhs runs like a red thread. According to the authors, this issue reached its climax in December 1917 after the Second All-Kazakh Congress of the Alash Party and the decisions made at it. As a result of the study, the authors came to the conclusion that the Kazakhs of the period under review are characterized by a multiple identity, consisting of several levels. It is emphasized that the reasons for such a hierarchy in ethnic identification were the large share of the territorial component, the increased role of the religious factor and the crisis of tribal identity.

The article examines the features of demographic transformations of the most numerous ethnic mi-norities of the Crimean peninsula in the 20th - early 21st century (Ukrainians, Crimean Tatars, Belarusians, Armenians); the key historical prerequisites, that had a decisive influence on these processes are highlighted. By means of statistical data analysis methods (summary and grouping of the obtained data, correlation analysis of data), the key stages that influenced the dynamics of the number of ethnic groups under consideration are identi-fied. The first stage dates back to the 40s of the 20th century, when, due to certain decisions of the then authorities of the country, the ethnic landscape of the Crimean peninsula changed significantly (the tragic deportation of Crimean Tatars and Armenians in 1944; the mass resettlement of the Ukrainian population to the territory of Crimea as a result of the Resolution of the State Defense Committee of August 12, 1944 “On the resettlement of collective farmers to the regions of Crimeaˮ), and the second stage began in 1989 and lasted until about the mid-2000s, characterized by the processes of repatriation of the Crimean Tatar population, which resulted in an increase in the share of this ethnic group in the structure of the population more than six times. Also during this period, the share of the Armenian ethnic group in the population structure increased almost three and a half times, and the share of the Belarusian ethnic group, on the contrary, decreased by 1.4 times.

This study was inspired by research into the personal correspondence of colonial servants in Sumatra and South Asia, and the realisation that their articulation of negative emotions such as anxiety or fear are ill-fitted to the current wider understanding of colonial anxiety. This article argues that the progress of colonial empires was widely shaped by negative emotions such as these, yet there were also methods used by colonial servants to deal with such negative experiences. The core example of this has been the case studies of Robert Cowan and Alexander Hall; these men’s letter archives display their usage of correspondence networks as part of their coping strategy. It is argued that these specifically ethnic, and at times gendered, correspondence networks formed a cultural bulwark which was used to cope with aspects of colonial anxiety. The method of this study therefore was epistolary examination to gather evidence and construct arguments. The archives of Cowan and Hall were compared and examined side by side to identify common patters and content. These were then considered in tandem with the current wider understanding of colonial anxiety. Based on the evidence gathered, it has been concluded that ethnic networks such as those examined could mitigate aspects of colonial anxiety. At the same time, these also demonstrate the great potential for future interdisciplinary studies involving personal histories tied to both Sumatra and South Asia.

Garibaldi and Turner (2004, p. 1, 5) explain the role that particular plants play in facilitating the shared ancestry, practices and social experience of an ethnicity. This can include spiritual connections, cultural expression and practice, ceremony, exchange, linguistic reflection, socialisation, medicinal and/or dietary systems. They term these plants ‘cultural keystone species’ and icons of identity, plants that if removed would cause some disruptions to the cultural practices and identity of an ethnic group. Undoubtedly, kava (Piper methysticum) is the cultural keystone species for many Oceanic and Pacific peoples; a “differentiating element of common culture” (Zagefka, 2016, p. 761) informing their ethno-cultural identity. That influence is also extending to new non-Pacific Island user groups who have embraced elements of kava ethno-cultural identity in what has been termed diasporic identity formation in reverse. This chapter will discuss kava with specific reference to ethnic positionality in Fiji, while recognising the tensions from inside and outside the region that support and threaten the continuance of the kava drinking tradition.

The investigation showed that teaching the values of tolerance, respecting diversity, acknowledging similarities and maintaining native languages and local identy should be done gradually by initially introducing the symbols of multicultural values through picture, videos, and observations, then teaching children through modeling and attitudes of inclusiveness. More importantly is teachers' knowledge on multiculturalism so that they could behave equally towards students and colleagues in school setting. Finally, multiculturalism should be embedded in the schools through celebration of cultures, ethnics and language diversity, through cultural festivals, food exhibition, local art and dance shows, music contests, drama, and literature. The analysis of the study of identities and semantic constructions of the value consciousness of the inhabitants of the Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol in ethnic groups is presented. The approach of the social anthropologist F. Barthes about the change of ethnic identity is used, with the help of which the process of the formation of the identity of the inhabitants of Crimea in the new socio-political reality is analyzed. The authors tried to understand how social processes contribute to the preservation of ethnic status, which occurs when ethnic characteristics are blurred or changed. The empirical model of the study included a mass survey of 2000 residents of the cities of the Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol. The object of the study was the inhabitants of the peninsula, during which three groups were singled out according to their ethnicity: those who consider themselves to be Russians - into the group of "Russians", who identify themselves as Ukrainians - into the group "Ukrainians", who refer to the Crimean Tatar population - into the group "Crimean Tatars ". The authors associate the understanding of the process of formation and change of identities among residents of the Crimean peninsula with factors of the social environment, communications, political and economic benefits. As a conclusion, the authors note that the process of forming identities in various ethnic groups of Crimea should be based on the principles of regional patriotism, taking into account territorial attachment to Crimea, creating unifying cultural codes, providing open alternatives, social opportunities, social trajectories of success that ethnicity can transmit.

In the late 1980s, the phenomenon of Chinese Koreans returning to South Korea began to emerge, marking a significant wave of repatriation to their ethnic homeland. This migration reflects the intricate interplay between their official motherland, China, and their ethnic homeland, South Korea, highlighting their ambiguous position. This journey also embodies a process of vague self-awareness, resonating with the complex struggles of belonging and identity faced by Chinese Koreans today. Currently, Chinese Koreans find themselves as strangers and foreigners in their erstwhile home, while their second home has transformed into their true homeland. China still holds a special place in their hearts, evoking feelings of belonging, security, affinity, and tolerance.

Dual identity has an assumption that subordinate group identity (e.g., ethnic and tribe identity) and superordinate group identity (e.g., national identity) can be simultaneously activated. The dual identity concept is important to examine in Indonesia as the country of thousands of tribes. As an initial step, we should adapt and evaluate a dual identity scale so that later it will become a catalyst for future study on the exploration of the association of dual identity and other factors. This study aims to adapt and evaluate the dual identity scale on the Indonesian sample. We tested the measurement through two collecting data, with 775 of total participants (data 1= 338 participants and data 2= 473 participants). The data were analyzed using exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). We found that the dual identity scale had a good fit model and had satisfactory validity and reliability. The validity and reliability of data 2 are better than data 1. In the data 2, each item of items used ‘tribe’ as a form of subordinate identity to replace ‘ethnic’ in the measurement of the data 1. In data 1, this scale had a significant correlation with ethnic and national identity. The result of EFA and CFA proved that the scale is unidimensional (having one factor) and robust to use in the Indonesian sample. The study also found that the use of ‘tribe’ can explain subordinate identity better than "ethnic" on the scale. This study contributes to a practical implication for using the dual identity scale in Indonesia.

Данное исследование имеет важное значение для понимания баланса между национальной идентичностью и этническим разнообразием в образовательных системах Казахстана и других многонациональных стран, и предлагает новые перспективы и рекомендации для будущих исследований. this study examines the representation of national identity and ethnic diversity in primary and secondary school textbooks in Kazakhstan. As a multi-ethnic country, Kazakhstan's education system faces the dual challenges of shaping national identity while respecting and integrating ethnic diversity. This paper conducts an interdisciplinary analysis of the specific presentations of national identity and ethnic diversity in textbooks, as well as their interrelationships, through a review of literature and textbook content analysis. The research finds that textbooks successfully foster a sense of national identity among students by describing history, culture, and national symbols, while also promoting awareness and respect for ethnic diversity through the introduction of different ethnic cultures and contributions. However, challenges remain in updating textbook content and enhancing the presentation of minority cultures. This study is significant for understanding the balance between national identity and ethnic diversity in the education systems of Kazakhstan and other multi-ethnic countries, and provides new perspectives and recommendations for future research.

A large number of Latvia’s inhabitants have left the country recently due to a variety of reasons. There have been several waves of emigration in Latvia’s history. Generations of Latvians live in different parts of the world. Many have become assimilated in their country of destination, but there are communities of Latvians that have maintained their national and cultural identity, as well as traditions for well over a century. The goal of this study is to identify the set of skills, situations and character education – known as folk pedagogy - that are central to the retention of the Latvian idenity in the Latvian villages of Augšbebi (Bobrovka) and Kurzemes Ozolaine (Kurļanddubovka) in the Russian region of Omsk in Siberia.

An understanding of folk education is particularly relevant in this period of regional mobility, when many people are leaving Latvia, finding themselves new places of residence and trying to maintain their ethnic identity.

AbstractThe article differentiates between the manifestation of recurrence qua consciousness and an underlying recurrence elaborated by Levinas in subjectivity beyond being. The movement of recurrence is traced in its relation to creation. Ethics is the language in which the selfless can be expressed, where value obtains in lieu of being. The philosophical problem to which recurrence is a response is posited as ipseity versus identiy. The self imposed obstacles to extracting a moral doctrine from the levinasian corpus are discussed, followed by suggestions on the difference a levinasian view might make in our understanding and undertaking of every day life.

Abstract In the oldest Austro-Hungarian sugar refinement plant opened in mid 18thcentury in Rijeka, today Croatia, a series of “idealized” landscapes pained by unknown artisans include depictions of slaves. The so-called Vedute ideate are a rare depiction of the racialized slave labor in the Austro-Hungarian Empire that points to the invisible labor, which enabled industrial production of sugar and made visible the relation of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, together with the peripheral port town of Rijeka, to the global flow of capital and the history of colonialism. By drawing on Catherine Baker’s recently published “Race in Yugoslavia” we look at how representation of slavery did not receive critical assessment while the resentment for the racialization across ethnic lines, in relation to Europe proper where the inhabitants ex-Yugoslavia are themselves racialized as the European other, perseveres. With the repurposing of the industrial building in the framework of European Capital of Culture project, Rijeka 2020 – Port of Diversity, the Vedute ideate will be publicly displayed as part of the Museum of the City of Rijeka display but it is uncertain whether the museum will recognize colonialism as a constituent part of Rijeka’s industrialization and development.

The proposed article, based on new archival documents identified in the archives of the Russian Academy of Sciences, with the involvement of researchers in the history of ethnic minorities on the territory of the USSR, Russia, reveals the role and place of the Laz ethnic minority in the south within Abkhazia and Georgia. Laz, as an ethnic minority, have undergone all those difficulties of transformation, including negative ones. Destructive measures were taken against them by the Government of the USSR – forced resettlement, deportation. Mohamed Vanlishi, Laz by nationality, being a member of the government of the Adjarian ASSR, minister, writer, sent a letter to L. Be-ria, the content of which touched Beria's feelings. The Lazes were returned from the special resettlement to their own homes. This side of the life of the ethnic minority of Georgia – Laz was reflected in the documents of "Stalin's special folder" The publication mentions many of the current representatives of the Laz in different periods of the his-tory of Georgia and Abkhazia and ethnic minorities living on their territory. The life of the Laz was also influenced by the policy carried out in Georgia to implement the "crys-tallization of society", pursuing the formation of statehood with one ethnic community, one culture. Introduction. The development of the problem itself in the scientific works of the author and other researchers is briefly stated. This is also a kind of reaction to complaints from the Laz themselves that the history of the ethnic minority is not being paid enough attention to. Little is known in the historiography of the Laz and their leaders, who led various kinds of movements for freedom and justice, the solution of social problems in society, the involvement of the Laz in party and state building. The content of punitive measures taken against Laz is partially revealed, the reasons and possibilities to overcome the built system in relations between the state and society, ethnic minorities are shown. Methods. The content of the article is based on different research methods. First of all, the method of historicism, a sequential presentation of the series of events that charac-terize the content of historical events, their relationship with accompanying events. It is also important to use the prosopographic method of presenting material about the main political figure of the Laz, representatives of the highest authorities. By using the narrative method, the ethnic community of the Laz is more widely represented and its participation in solving many issues in national state policy, the interaction of the ethnic community itself in the system of interethnic ties. The use of the information method is of particular value for building up an event series. This method is also quite applicable to the analysis of national processes taking place in the region where the Laz live. In the presentation of the article, the method of comparative historical analysis was also ap-plied. Results. This article was based primarily on archival documents about the holes, identi-fied in the archives of the Russian Academy of Sciences. This allowed a broader charac-terization of the Laz as an ethnic minority. Along with the well-known materials, show the settlement of Laz in the territory of the regions of residence. The documents of the archive make it possible to reveal the role and place of the Section for the Study of the National Question created in the structure of the Communist Academy. The forms and methods of work in the Communist Academy in the study of the history of the national question and ethnic minorities have been clarified.

West Kalimantan is a multicultural society because it consists of various ethnic groups, religions, and beliefs. Dominated by the Dayak ethnicity, West Kalimantan also consists of ethnic Malays, Chinese, Madurese, Javanese, and others. Sambas Regency, which was previously part of Singkawang City and Bengkayang Regency, is also a multicultural and multiethnic city. Nevertheless, the ethnic and cultural diversity in Sambas can be a strength for the region but also a threat because of the various conflicts that have arisen in the history of this region. It is not uncommon for competition and social conflict to occur because of this diversity. Examining this phenomenon, there are two problem formulations in this study, namely: (1) What are the latent conflicts that can threaten the harmony of the Sambas community? (2) What is the potential for tolerance that can maintain the harmony of the Sambas community? By using qualitative research methods through case studies, the subjects of this research are community leaders, human rights activists, academics, and local governments who have a role in managing conflict in Sambas. The data in this study were obtained through several techniques, namely: in-depth interviews, Focus Group Discussion (FGD), and observation. The findings of this study indicate that the latent conflicts in Sambas Regency are ethnocentrism, decreased hatred, politics, and social media. In addition, there is also the potential for tolerance, including education, social and cultural activities, government regulations and community actions, as well as support from opinion leaders

The Lebanese lands, which hosted many different ethnic and religious identities under the Ottoman Empire's rule, could not bring together the plural and distinctive differences within it on common ground. The most crucial factor for the lack of common ground is the Mutasarrifate system established with the interference of France and other European states under the Ottoman rule in the country. The Mutasarrifate system's institutionalization and the building of administrative changes on this system in Lebanon's historical breaking moments brought the fragmented structure to the present day. As a result, this political system based on ethnic and religious differences prevented a Lebanese state citizen identity based on common rights and responsibilities. In the continuation and afterward of the demonstrations that started right after the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri in Lebanon in 2005, a broad social consensus ground could not be established. Considered as the reflection of color revolutions in the Middle East, the Cedar Revolution could not produce more democratic and inclusive results as claimed.

PAHs are known carcinogens associated with immune system suppression, skin irritation, allergic reactions, respiratory problems, mutagenic issues and are generally toxic to humans. In this study, we assessed the presence and proportions of PAHs in the blood plasma of under-five children living in crude oil-polluted environment in Ogoniland, Niger Delta region of Nigeria. Communities resident in close proximity to crude oil exploration sites are constantly faced with environmental, socio-economic and health consequences of crude oil pollution. People can be exposed to PAHs through multiple routes including inhalation, ingestion and dermal contact. Ethical clearance for this study was obtained from the Ethics Committee, University of Port Harcourt. A total of 78 children were recruited from Gokana (male =17, female= 22) and Ideato (Male=15, female=24) using multi-clustered sampling method. Standard procedures were observed in this study. Results obtained were compared with under five children living in non-oil polluted environments within the Niger Delta province. The overall average PAHs was 0.331±0.383 mg/kg for Gokana males and 0.058±0.057mg/kg for Ideato males; overall average PAHs was 0.514±0.373 mg/kg for Gokana females and 0.100±0.049 mg/kg for Ideato female; overall average PAHs was 0.423±0.383 mg/kg Gokana and 0.081±0.057 mg/kg for Ideato. Under-five children in Ogoniland showed positive blood plasma PAHs higher than the comparison group in Ideato. However, carcinogenic PAHs were below levels of concern in the study population. The male gender showed higher positive PAHs than the female gender. Further studies on inflammation, stress factors and overall health status are recommended considering the vulnerability of the study population.

Abstract Introduction Reviews of medication are vital to support medicine effectiveness and optimise person-centred care outcomes. However, inequalities negatively impact ethnic minority populations when accessing medicine review services.1 It is important to identify opportunities to improve access for these communities. Previous studies have demonstrated the significance of overcoming accessibility barriers, but specific detail about how best to achieve this is lacking.2,3 Through co-design workshops, this study seeks to integrate the voices of those people from ethnic minority populations to gain better insight into improving access to medicines review services for ethnic minority communities. Aim This qualitative, person-centred co-design study sought to build greater knowledge and understanding by involving representatives from communities whose needs may remain unmet. When considering the value that medication reviews can offer in optimising a person’s medication, this study aimed to: (i) better understand existing barriers that may impact those from ethnic minority communities when accessing services and to (ii) identify measures that may facilitate improved service accessibility for these groups. Methods A series of co-design workshops, with four groups of patient-stakeholders, were conducted between September-November 2021; they took place in-person or via video call whilst adhering to COVID-19 restrictions. Existing evidence-based perceptions affecting access to medicines services were critiqued and recommendations were generated to improve access for ethnic minority patients. The workshops were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim to enable thematic analysis. QSR NVivo (Version 12) facilitated data analysis. The Health Research Authority granted ethical approval (ref: 21/HRA/1426). Results Twelve participants were recruited: including 8 UK citizens, 2 asylum seekers and 2 participants in receipt of residency visas. In total, 4 different ethnic minority groups were represented. Each participant took part in a first and second workshop to share and co-create recommendations. Three recommendations were developed and centred on: (i) delivering culturally competent medicines review services; (ii) building awareness of medicines review services and how to access them; and (iii) enabling better discussions with patients from ethnic minority communities. Discussion/Conclusion The results have important implications for overcoming ethnic inequalities in access to medicines reviews. The data highlighted the significance of raising awareness of the medicine review services and understanding each person’s lived experiences in order to address barriers that currently affect access. Delivering medication review services with cultural competency is vital; steps should be taken to address potential language barriers and build patient-provider relationships through in-person medication reviews. Collaborative co-production approaches could enable better design, implementation and delivery of medication services that are accessible and culturally competent, in order to best meet the needs of ethnic minority communities. Steps should be taken to address knowledge gaps around cultural competence training to enable the creation of pharmacies as inclusive, person-centred healthcare settings. Methods for improving person-centred communication within pharmacies should be further explored. Close, collaborative working with individual populations could enable specific tailoring of medicines review services that best meet the needs of the community. The National Institute for Health Research Applied Research Collaboration (NIHR ARC) and Newcastle University Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement group had extensive input in the study design and conceptualisation. Seven patient champions were appointed to the steering group to ensure that the research was conducted, and the findings were reported, with cultural competence and sensitivity. References 1. 23 Background: Absence of national US gastric cancer (GC) screening necessitates alternative methods like surveys to identify high-risk populations. Identification of high-risk persons may be enhanced by adding ethnic and cultural variables to more conventionally known risk factors for GC. Methods: Data from a prior case-control study of 40 GC cases and 100 controls were used. A "conventional" risk factor model (age, gender, family history of GC, body mass index, excessive salt intake, alcohol, smoking, blood type, H pylori) was compared to one incorporating ethnic and cultural variables (race, immigration, generation, cultural food at ages 15-18 years, acculturation and education) using model fit, sensitivity, specificity and expected positive predictive values (PPV). Stepwise regression was then used to create a model from this pool of variables. PPV was calculated using Bayes' Theorem applied to the baseline GC incidence in the US (7.2 per 100,000). Results: The "conventional" model required 14 questions and resulted in 25% sensitivity, 94% specificity, 28 per 100,000 PPV at the 70% probability cut-off, and AUC=0.871. The model incorporating ethnic and cultural variables required 38 questions and resulted in 48% sensitivity, 91% specificity, 38 per 100,000 PPV, and AUC =0.965. After eliminating items less predictive at p=0.2, age, gender, family history of GC, excessive salt intake, immigration, generation and race remained in the model. This model required 7 questions and resulted in 45% sensitivity, 96% specificity, 81 per 100,000 PPV and AUC=0.914. Conclusions: The model with the greatest ability to identify persons at risk of GC included ethnic and cultural variables. This model can be translated into a survey with few items that can serve as a highly scalable tool to identify high-risk individuals. Support: UG1CA189823 [Table: see text]
