Reeveston Place is a neighborhood located on the southeast side of Richmond, Indiana. All of Richmond's National Register residential areas contain examples of the popular architectural styles of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Reeveston, however, is a unique Richmond neighborhood because its plan and development were primarily influenced by the trends and styles of the early and mid-twentieth century.Economic and cultural influences before, between and after both world wars, and the impact of the automobile were factors that made Reeveston an area different from its predecessors. Building activity occurred in the neighborhood for nearly a half-century, and the result is an eclectic mix of architectural styles. As it grew, Reeveston was primarily a neighborhood for the upper-middle class and upper-class citizens of Richmond, and several prominent architects were employed to design the houses. Reeveston's historical and architectural significance warrant its consideration for inclusion in the National Register.

This thesis is an investigation of the relationship between the mass media and urban space, which takes as its object of analysis the concentration of newspaper buildings on Park Row in New York in the second half of the nineteenth century. By analysing five major New York newspapers and the architecture which housed them, commonalities in form, style and structure are revealed which are based on notions of display, spectacle, advertisement, order, and sensationalism. As daily newspapers achieved greater status in nineteenth century cities, their buildings increasingly took on Italian Renaissance, French Second Empire and Gothic forms, and became among the first skyscrapers in America. This thesis documents the designs and decisions of the construction process, as well as the interpretations and justifications of the chosen styles that were offered in the newspapers, in order to explain the form and meaning of this important phenomenon of American media history.

This creative project thesis is an exploration of the connected experiences in light, space and time, developed through the 'making'of architecture. The process began with the concept of 'installation', in which the practice evolves from a vast spectrum of disciplines. The objective is to create an alternative spatial experience, occurring within an existing building. A piece of architecture through which the environment may be activated by the presence of light, material and man . An abandoned old building was chosen as the site in which to create the project. The repair and the creation of the new combined, creating the installation of a space which both respects and evolves from the existing. The process of rehabilitation and the 'making' of architecture offering a variety of interactive opportunities; of dialogue and language which furthers the understanding of society and the conception of architecture.

Purpose: The purpose with this project was to evaluate the environmental, social, and economic aspects regarding two climate positive buildings in Västerås municipality in Sweden. The company responsible for the buildings, ETC Bygg AB, has assigned this task tothe research group Future Energy Center (FEC) at Mälardalen University. Method: The buildings was simulated with the programs IDA ICE and PVGIS to obtain the overall energy consumption and building efficiency as well as the PV system potential. Regarding transportation, vehicle and driver statistics was studied and adapted to the case study to estimate the tenant’s climate impact. Results: The results showed that the electricity obtained from the PV system both covers the building’s, and tenant’s estimated yearly electricity consumption, but also with a surplus available for storage or selling. The simulatedresults were compared to several previous studies with similar outcome, but with slightly different results. The tenants need for climate friendly transportation resulted in a suggestion of an electric mobility station consisting of electric cars, mopeds, and bicycles to lower the tenants carbon mitigation, costs, and energy consumption. Conclusions: Conclusions from the study was that the buildings meet both the BBR, and the FEBY18 Gold requirements with their high energy efficiency, as well as that the solar power system most likely will produce enough energy to cover both building, and tenant power consumption. A conclusion can be made that the transition to electric transportation have a potential to save both a considerable amount of energy and money for the tenants, but also the possibility to lower their collective yearly carbon mitigation. Also, that the life in a climate positive building have mostly, if not only, positive impacts on its residents.

This creative project, "A Survey of Pre-World War II Architecture in Greenville, Illinois," involved completing a windshield survey and a more comprehensive study of designated areas in order to identify resources which are significant to the historic character of Greenville's commercial district and residential neighborhoods. Greenville, Illinois is a small, rural city in south central Illinois having a population of about 5,500. A general lack of awareness to the architectural and historical resources in Greenville's residential neighborhoods has been present for some time, which has resulted in demolitions and endangered buildings. This survey will help promote public awareness of Greenville's architectural resources, which is a first step toward preserving these resources. An article by Thomas J. Powell supports this view, "Today, the cultural-resources survey is recognized as the underpinning of any successful preservation effort, and not just in big arenas like Chicago and Washington, D.C." Now is the best time to create public awareness to the historic resources still existent in Greenville and the need to preserve these irreplaceable structures. The groundwork for a more extensive preservation movement in Greenville has been laid with its participation in the National Main Street Program. This creative project will provide many opportunities to educate the public by defining possible historic districts, identifying and explaining the dominant styles and types of architecture present and by making recommendations for future use of the survey. It will also serve as a useful tool to promote historic preservation, to raise public awareness to Greenville's historic architecture, and as a starting point for a continuing survey of Greenville's historic resources.

The structure now owned by Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis, IN was built in 1903 at 16th and Delaware Streets by a very prominent congregation, the First Presbyterian Church. Since its construction, the building has been subject to a rehabilitation that destroyed many historic features of the building, followed by abandonment that led to its overall deterioration. For the past four years the building has been occupied once again following a partial rehabilitation. This study found that the building was historically intact on the exterior, but problems such as the deterioration of the limestone were threatening the overall integrity of the structure. The interior, which had been subject to many alterations as part of a 1958 renovation, was fully functional and in good condition but was missing many historic features. This study makes recommendations for repairs on the exterior and an interior rehabilitation that restores some missing historic features, and promotes the retention and stewardship of the existing historic features within the building.

The purpose of this report is to get an overview of the CO2 reduction possibilities when adopting different renewable energy source, when the case studied building sustains a district heating network connection and when not, and how the renewable energy source flexibilities (Solar and Wind) differ depending on region. The method regards a ETC house that falls into the climate positive category and assesses the reduction when comparing CO2 emissions form the energy demand. The result for the flexibilities is then compared to the BBR demand. The result shows a difference of around 10% in production for the flexibilities when comparing the northern and middle region with the southern. And a decrease between 19-36% gCO2. Comparing a scenario with and without a connection to the district heating network showed that when the ground source heat pump offsets the energy demand, CO2, and cost reductions (6 and 4% respectively) can be seen. With an average installation cost, the payback period for the ground source heat pump can be estimated to be around 4 year. In conclusion the thesis project shows that the climate is a ruling factor when assessing energy questions for the residential sector. It also shows the difference in CO2 and cost that comes with it can be reduced and help mitigated the sectors effects on the environment. This in turn shows that the overall reduction of CO2 for the case studied building follows the demands and goals set by the European commission and gives motivation to expand the construction as cost is also reduced.

The present work consists of the evaluation of constructive performance of some enterprises contained in the "Programa de Arrendamento Residencial (PAR) from Caixa Econômica Federal in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais/Brazil, executed with the structural masonry technology. The proposal of this research was the analysis of the existent pathological manifestations, with emphasis in the structural aspect of the enterprises, however, also contemplating other types of damages in the constructions. There were chosen five enterprises being taken into account the following parameters: age, load and location. The data were taken accomplished through inspections. Firstly it was made a qualitative analysis in the five enterprises through a meticulous evaluation of the pathological manifestations, demonstrated through the pictures took "in loco ", only two of these enterprises were inhabited and they could be analyzed internally. This interns analysis provided a meticulous quantification of the pathological manifestations found in the apartments and circulation in all the floors. After that, the types more frequent of pathological manifestations were verified in constructions of structural masonry in the loads and ages analyzed. The responsible administrator for the enterprises available the projects and some responsible builders accepted to answer referring questions about the projects and the executions of the works. Like this, it was possible to cross project information and execution of the work, diagnosing the origin of each type of found pathological manifestation. With the cause of the problems, collective and preventive solutions were proposed and, looking for the improvement of the quality of the enterprises already built and future enterprises, pointing out that the collective solutions a usually have a some difficulty to be executed. It was compared the quantitative results of the enterprises in different ages and loads and it was observed that, as expected, the age interferes in the number of occurrences of pathological manifestations, however project mistakes and execution makes that useful life of the work is reduced through the increase and the precocious emergence of pathologies in the constructions.

Color is a significant architectural element, which is open to become a major representative element in the process of design. This study aims to understand the limits of using color as an architectural element and discuss the transformative effects of the use of color with respect to meaning and design levels of buildings. The study is composed of two main parts. In the first part limits of using color as a complementary and consequential part of design are discussed. The architectural understanding of color in the 20th century is utilized as the main ground for a contemporary case study. The case study in the second part uses residential buildings in Ankara as the main domain to understand the continuities and discontinuities between color preferences and architectural meaning. The method of the study is based on comparison of the facades of residential buildings of various contexts, scales, languages and typologies in five different categories. The first category is &ldquo
The Figural Use of Color&rdquo
which is constituted by decorated facades. &ldquo
The Elemental Use of Color&rdquo
is the second category based upon the continuity between tectonic elements of facade and color. The third is the &ldquo
Material Color and Painting,&rdquo
which is based upon the color representations of the natural material preferences supported by additional painting. &ldquo
Tectonic Use of Color&rdquo
as the fourth frame implies color brought by the nature of the material. The last category is &ldquo
Monochromatic Use of Color&rdquo
in which the facades are colored in a single hue or different lightness of the same hue.

This study explores and reiterates the significance carried by the notions of place, multiplicity and experience in the approaches to the study of architecture, in the shaping of cultures, and in the construction of urban (hi)stories and topographies. The research aims to reveal the existence of a transcultural space constituting the cosmos of Nicosia, capital city of the late medieval and renaissance Kingdom of Cyprus. It is argued that the natural and built environment of the city simultaneously witnessed as well as constructed this highly obscure space, whose elusive nature has not been sufficiently or comprehensively researched thus far. The purpose of this study is to unearth numerous attempts at reconciliation by medieval civilizations, and to comprehend their repeated efforts at bringing in parallel existence and understanding adjacent, but seemingly oppositional or even confrontational, cultures and spaces.
The method used engages a re-interpretation of Nicosia's urban space by means of a scholarly narrative, defined as a comprehensively annotated telling of citizens' experiences through the city. While maintaining that it is this telling which better exposes the city's character, past findings on the architecture, topography, and urban experience of Nicosia are concurrently examined, some of them accepted and others re-proposed. Different architectural and ethical realities for the city, as well as varied urban and social identities, emerge as possibilities for pondering only after the superimposition of scientific findings on an interweaving web of experiences, on the remarkably phenomenal world of medieval urban space.

This thesis is about the continuing life of Balinese culture and traditions currently under threat from unregulated economic development, mass tourism, and migration. Critical to this study are considerations surrounding the control of land and its improvements, as well as the success and failure of urban planning within the sphere of cultural conservation. The thesis argues that ???State planning systems as imposed by the Indonesian government are inappropriate in the Balinese context.??? While this statement seems fairly straightforward on the surface, it involves a complex understanding of the forces mentioned above, of their interaction and their effects on local culture. This study adopts a hermeneutic approach to theory seeking greater depth of meaning rather than discovering new facts, and embodies three main strategies. The first explains the relationship between society and space using a cultural matrix derived from anthropologist E.T.Hall. The second strategy deploys qualitative research method using focus groups, and third, it uses in-depth personal surveys at physical sites. The thesis therefore reveals the eroding impacts of tourism on local culture. Focusing on territoriality, it embraces two contradicting sets of values represented in the traditional Balinese system of Adat, and those of the market-based system of the Indonesian State. Resulting conflicts are demonstrated through specific and generic case studies. Here, the dominant position of modern state planning establishes the legal foundation on which capitalist practices, the dominating role of private enterprise, corruption, and collusionary attitudes are nourished. While the role of the government in promoting tourism, and the economic significance of the industry are acknowledged, the study measures these against the costs of such advantages to the Balinese way of life. Overall, the thesis reflects upon ongoing territorial problems that have been experienced in Bali for more than forty years. It provides an in depth analysis of how state imposed planning systems are locked in critical conflict with the proven and functioning traditional Balinese Adat. Finally, the necessary features of future planning systems are proposed in order to revitalize local culture. Hence the thesis demonstrates that modern systems of planning are inappropriate to Balinese cultural conservation.

This project aims to analyze the existing context and propose a strategy to revitalize Fener and Balat, which are two historic districts in Istanbul. During the past two centuries, economic changes, modernization movements and new planning strategies throughout the country have given the city a new shape. Individual buildings, streets, and entire sub-districts exist in various stages of disrepair. But today, Fener and Balat still preserve their distinctive character in their historic major structures, as well as historic commercial and residential districts. This unique character can be seen the districts' assets which are documented in this project along with the many liabilities. This revitalization project focuses on restoring and preserving the human-scaled buildings and pedestrian oriented streets, while creating cultural and tourist-oriented facilities to help economically revitalize the neighborhood. This project serves as a prototype for the revitalization of other historic neighborhoods in Istanbul and other historic Turkish cities.

Architecture, through its presence, must elevate man, beyond the physical sense, and strive to glorify the inner being. In the opening section of this thesis I will briefly examine a few ancient ruins in an effort to explore the spiritual nature of Architecture. Following this exploration I will then move into the design portion of the thesis. The project is a theological library and scholar’s complex located on Roosevelt Island in the Potomac River.

This creative project presents an overview of the architectural styles and history of the surviving commercial architecture of A.M. Strauss in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He was the best known architect working in Fort Wayne during the period covered by this creative project, and his work is an excellent example of how national architectural trends affected architecture in Fort Wayne. His commercial architecture represents his best known and most significant work. He did far too many buildings to cover in a single thesis, and so his residential and institutional architecture in Fort Wayne remains for another study, as do his many works outside of Fort Wayne. This project also brings together in one treatment as much photographic, historical and architectural documentation of these buildings as possible — documentation now scattered across east central and northeast Indiana. It traces Strauss's stylistic changes from Spanish Eclecticism through Art Deco and Art Moderne to Modernism. The surviving buildings represent each of these styles and shifts in historical context.

The design of a mixed-use market, three axes of influence was studied on a site at the end of King Street in Alexandria, VA. A semicircular form was developed that terminated the main circulation axis down King Street, continued the free form edge of the Potomac, and acted as a visual beginning to the "new world" of Washington, DC across the river. While the marketplace still remains as an enduring and appealing image of the city, it has diminished in recent years. Climate controlled indoor malls and shopping centers sprawl across the . country, and many of the real marketplaces have fallen into disrepair, physically and symbolically losing their traditional role as a forum for the people. There has, however, been a resurgence of interest in the markets in the past decade. As people grow tired of impersonal service, the poor quality of goods and produce, and the often nondescript atmosphere, many of the older markets are being re-inhabited by farmers, artists and others seeking to sell their products. Around many urban centers, people are rediscovering the simple premise of the market which serves as a canvas for the explosion of colors, sights, sounds and smells it contains.

The prosperity of the human species is based upon the existence of communal behavior. Some individuals provide food, while others are freed from the search for food to do other things: to chip flint arrowheads, to make pottery, to write symphonies. In large cities, individuals may be vaguely conscious of their larger social community, but often they recognize few of the faces of the other individuals who belong to the same large community. In an urban setting, the social behavior of individuals is defined by the built environment. The built environment has a responsibility to encourage the formation of communities of individuals, as well as to recognize and strengthen the wider community of mankind, in order that the species may flourish and prosper. A Food Market for Alexandria is a proposition for a place in Old Town Alexandria Virginia, where the growth of responsible communities may occur in an architectural setting which is a responsive member of the collection of buildings that house the human city.

This thesis studies the building cultures of traditional societies and the ways in which the inhabitants share knowledge as a means to address their needs for meaning and belonging. In specific, it examines the cultural, geographic, historic, and physical aspects of Maloula, an Aramaic village in Syria, to understand the role of the "villager-builder" in making decisions related to the urban form and architecture of the village. It was found that some villager-builders question a number of new design influences and processes in which they themselves engaged. They are critical of the new ideas, technologies, and styles that, in time, came to be seen as significant departures that disconnected the village inhabitants from their shared past, even as these same elements became part of the village's new traditions.Fundamentally, this thesis recognizes the importance of knowledge at all levels; in other words, the problems and solutions found by the villager-builders were and are the common property of all.Research methodology included reading previous studies about Maloula and traveling to Maloula in the summer of 2005 during which time numerous interviews were conducted with local inhabitants, villager-builders, and officials and professional workers in the village. Due to the lack of archives and written documents, this study is based on oral studies, visits to official institutions in Damascus and Maloula, and documentation of the village and its architecture.

The Judge Earl Stone House, built in 1849, is one of the oldest existing structures in Noblesville, Indiana, the county seat of Hamilton County, which is located immediately north of Indianapolis and Marion County. Originally built as a residence, it has been used for commercial purposes since the middle of the twentieth century. Last occupied in 1998 when it was used as a gift store, it has remained vacant, causing its condition to deteriorate. This creative project documents the current condition of the building, offers recommendations for the preservation of the exterior and foundation of the structure, provides a maintenance schedule to prevent further deterioration, and recommends two adaptive reuses.

The reason for this thesis project was not necessarily to create a thing, but rather to create a basis of thought on Architecture. An idea about Architecture which had to come from a strong architecturally philosophical foundation. Thus, this thesis is about establishing and then solidifying a structure of thought from which I could continue my education, by asking questions of Architecture, and then create a position of strength from which I could base my design decisions on. The fundamental idea is that of a city as a great communal room created over time by its inhabitants, from smaller rooms, neighborhoods. This room is in constant evolutionary change as it continues to define itself physically for its time and place in history. But the city is not just a physical thing, it is also a sense of place, of belonging to a moment in history, and to a distinct place in the world.

It is in man's nature to want to know his place within his environment. This inherent need manifests itself in many ways, often unique to the cultures and societies that husband them. The primacy of man's need for a sense of his place in the world is evident in the collective mythologies that surround every culture's history of its people's origins and of their understanding of the world and their place in it, between earth and sky. This sense of one's groundedness, of one's place, is essential and more than simply a matter of orientation or territoriality, although both these needs are very real. The roots we plant in the soil provide an anchor and give us our bearing. One's connection to the environment is intrinsic to the knowledge of who one is and where, both as an individual and as a part of a larger collective. Our associations with larger contexts, be they physical, social, political, or spiritual, are moorings against the uncertainties of our world. They define our lives and our relationships with one another. It is within this framework that we are bonded to the past, and ultimately, guided into the future.

Beginning in the mid 19th Century, intercontinental railroad service made it possible for theatrical road companies to move more freely across America and perform in the smaller community opera houses. This thesis is about one of these opera houses, the Homestake Opera House in Lead, South Dakota. This thesis chronicles the events from the conception of the opera house by Pheobe Hearst and Thomas Grier, to the construction of the structure, 1911 through 1914, and finally through some of the events that took place in the opera house from the opening in August, 1914 to late November, 1936, at which time the opera house was converted into a movie house. Focus is given to the road companies that performed in the opera house within the time period specified. Such performances are chronicled by date, company name, title and type of performance, and names of the author(s).

I guess my concern is for building. This thesis became a search for form. It did not start that way. The start was a search for reasons, for methods, for a way. It was, however, the pursuit of an understanding of the essence of an object that proved the most rewarding. How l design has come from investigating WHAT I design. The thesis has not left me with answers, but with questions. And what are those questions? The thing: The thing as OBJECT: it seems to boil down to - how is it made? The thing as EVENT: it seems to boil down to - what is it like to be there? The thing as DESIGNED: it seems to boil down to what do I want its nature to be? What will inform my forms?

Annotation:
The purpose of this thesis was to create a structure that is a result of a hyperbolic paraboloid shell (hypar). As a result of this, a certain order evolved which dictated the form, the structure, and the environmental aspects of the two buildings designed. Through the design of the hypar walls, came the opportunity and/or need for daylighting. This is the conscious design of a building form to use direct sunlight for illumination and thermal benefit. Buildings so designed respond both to direct sunlight and to sunlight modified through diffusion or reflection by the sky vault, clouds, natural or man—made elements of the landscape, and the buildings, themselves. The workers occupying these buildings spend a major portion of their day in a place that could have psychological and physiological effects. Sunlight gives reassuring orientation to time, a place, and weather, as well as producing interior environments that are comfortable, delightful, and productive.

David Kroll, Director of the Preservation Studio at RATIO Architects, Inc. in Indianapolis, approached me in September of 2007 about a project. The Eli Lilly Farm in Carmel, Indiana was in danger of demolition. The property was sold to a development company who was proposing an idea for over 1000 homes as a part of a "Master Planned Community" to be built on 335 acres of land. One of the stipulations of this sale was that the Conner Prairie Living History Museum had first right of refusal on any of the buildings from the property. The idea had been brought up to relocate a couple of the buildings on the farm to save them from demolition. I decided to document the farm so that future generations could know what used to exist there. That idea developed into my current topic: "A Study of the Relocation of the Eli Lilly Farm Office with adaptive use Options and Rehabilitation Recommendations."

Annotation:
The purpose of this thesis is to explore the role and influence imagination plays on a building for the arts. The American Film Institute is considered to be a building for the production and study as well as the presentation of film. Because imagination is the most important tool the film maker possesses and is that which the general audience becomes a part of, this thesis strives to produce a building which enhances this tool. Steel and glass have been chosen as two of the three primary materials in the film institute for their reflective properties as well as their specific properties to distort reflections. Concrete was chosen as the third primary material not only for its compressive strength, but for its many possible finishes and its compatibility (being non-reflective) with the other two primary materials. The institute will be created in such a way that even in their permanence they will provide for a changing space which will make for a re-occurring newness each time it is visited, thus sparking the imagination. To the user of the institute, the space will each time be new. It takes on this characteristic as its users encounter their own reflection as well as the reflections - sometimes distorted - of others. This is enhanced as movement occurs not always in a straight line nor only at one level. Shade and shadow from stationary light, as further enhance the imagination. “The spatial area, whatever it may be—room, stage, garden, street—is the screen; the moving objects and people are the picture-in-solution reconstituted as a transient entity in time and space.”³

Haun, Katherine K. „Insulating the exterior wall of historic buildings : analysis of the Park Inn Hotel“. Virtual Press, 2008. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1390316.

Annotation:
Insulating the exterior wall of an historic property can have the benefits of increasing thermal comfort for occupants as well as reducing energy use for heating and cooling. Concerns expressed by preservationists that insulation can lead to the degradation of the building structure or its historic fabric. Using the Park Inn Hotel, an early twentieth century commercial property designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, the application, feasibility, ramifications and potential benefits of applying insulation to the exterior wall was studied. Analysis for insulation includes evaluation of the historic characteristics, construction of the exterior wall, heat loss calculations, and how moisture will be transported through the wall. It was found that the key to determining if the exterior wall of a historic building can be insulated successfully without damage to the historic characteristics of the building or to the building itself, is in understanding how the building was designed and how it deals with moisture. With a thorough understanding of these elements, one can ascertain if insulating the exterior wall of his/her historic building is appropriate.

The City of Indianapolis, in wanting to become the amateur athletic capitol of the United States, needs to provide appropriate housing for training athletes and their coaches in order to fully realize the city's goal of creating the optimum amateur athlete environment. This project provided a master plan for an athlete housing complex located in the peripheral downtown area along the Canal, and near several sports training facilities. A major purpose of the project was to approach the housing site development utilizing Latin American Spanish Colonial planning-design concepts adapted to a North American urban site. Thus, the proposed housing and its site plan serve not only as a living environment for visiting athletes, but as an enduring post- X Pan American games commemoration of our respect and friendship for the people of Latin America.

This thesis focuses on the former Nickel Plate railroad roundhouse located in Frankfort, Indiana. The building is in danger of demolition by neglect and was listed on Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana's Top Ten Most Endangered Sites list in January 2004. In order to suggest realistic adaptive reuse options for the building, a number of elements were researched. The study includes information pertaining to the history of the railroad in the United States and Indiana, followed by specific information on roundhouses, the history of Frankfort and its role in the railroad community, a study of the Frankfort roundhouse itself, and examples of successful roundhouse adaptive reuse across the country. Various problems that would inhibit the efforts of a preservation group are explored, and suggestions for the building's future are made based on the author's knowledge of the subject.

the intention of this creative project, is to explore the concept of the idea of temporary permanence in architecture. the project is an attempt to put into architectural perspective an understanding, meaning and context of the relative permanence of architecture as a parallel physical and conceptual idea over time. the relationship of the various forces that shape, mold and influence the architectural environment is a major part of the natural evolution of the continuing adaptation to change within our environment. from an architectural and general outlook this means being able to understand the phenomenon of change and respecting its existence. without change the idea of temporary permanence would not exist.the paper is presented in two parts. the first part, consists of the creative project of the paper, presenting the second phase research development and the architectural exploration of the theoretical disposition, temporary permanence. the second part, found in Appendix 1, is the research paper documenting "raw data", personal observation and experience, and examples of site context as a supportive basis for the reasoning of such a disposition.

The roles of the individual elements and their constituent pieces that form the basis for the language of architecture were investigated. Walls, stairs, floors, beams, and other elements are the primary means necessary for the expression of ideas in architectural terms. To effectively use these elements, an understanding of their material properties and characteristics is essential. The role of the wall in architecture was especially important in this thesis. Walls have been considered primarily in response to their physical and material properties. Other elements were dealt with according to how they react with the wall.
