Software engineering has been facing a crisis for several years now - there is more demand for new software than there is ability to supply. Software reuse is a potential way to tackle the problems caused by the software crisis with its promises of increased productivity and cheaper development costs. Several software reuse successes have been reported, but these have been predominantly in large, well structured companies. However, there are numerous smaller companies that could also benefit from reuse if it were made available to them. This thesis addresses these issues by implementing a reuse programme in a small company. An incremental approach to reuse introduction is adopted, following the Seven Steps to Success, and 'lightweight' processes are recommended to support the reuse programme. A prototype tool set, ReThree- C++, was developed to automate support for the reuse programme. The results of the case study are presented. The reuse programme was successful, with benefits to the company including both increased speed of production and financial gains from selling reusable components. The challenges faced are also identified. Details of the tool set giving automated support for reuse are also presented. The tool set is an approach to reuse repository control which also integrates information abstraction from C++ source code to generate class hierarchy charts and software documentation automatically. It helps developers store, retrieve, understand and use reusable components. The usefulness of the tool set is shown with an experiment and as part of the case study. The purpose of the thesis is to show that small companies can implement reuse, and that the method presented supports the introduction of a reuse programme. It concludes that although challenges were faced, great benefits can be gained by using the method with automated support for reuse in a small company.

Nowadays business atmosphere is to constantly come up with new improvements, in order to become more competitive, or simply stay competitive.Lean manufacturing rose up few decades ago and is now famous for its radical improvements but also for its difficulty to implement. The aim of this study is to get a better understanding of how can Lean bring such important changes, but also what must be done in order to implement it.In order to solve the problem of this report, it was decided to conduct a quantitative research relying on a case study. The company chosen wants to implement Lean but does not really know how to achieve it, so it is a very good opportunity for this project to collaborate with it and see what can be done to implement Lean manufacturing. The results of this thesis demonstrate the need of implementing a philosophy, a way of thinking, rather than different production tools. People must also be prepared for long implementation, which can take between 5 to 10 years. One of the key factors for this implementation is the involvement and empowerment of workers, who will massively contribute to the change process by removing different kind of waste which slow down the processes.

Small businesses are critical to the health of the United States economy as they account for approximately 50% of all jobs and 99% of all firms. The purpose for this descriptive multiunit case study was to explore what strategies small business owners used to achieve profitability by the end of the first 5 years of opening their business. The sample comprised 4 small business owners who have been profitable by Year 5 of being in business in Denver, Colorado. The conceptual framework for this study was built upon the general systems theory. The data were collected through semistructured interviews and company documents. Transcript review and member checking were completed to strengthen credibility and trustworthiness. Based on the methodological triangulation of the data sources collected, 3 emergent themes were identified after completing the 5 stages of data analysis: seasonality of the business, passion and dedication of the small business owner, and hiring the right employees. The findings from this study may contribute to social change by providing insights and strategies for small business owners in preparing and sustaining profitability. The data from this study may contribute to the prosperity of the small business owners' employees, their families, communities, and the local economy.

Field studies, interviews and participative observations have been the main methods in this master thesis where the author has studied, and partially participated, in the development process of a booking system called FRI. Idavall is the small company that develops this suc-cessful software despite small resources. Characteristic for Idavall is in the way they manage to involve their about 1300 users in the development process. The development process is highly flexible which is required when rapidly changes are common. The overall question in this thesis is: How do Idavall manage to develop this software in a flexible way and successfully involve their users in the development process? Idavall arranges FRI-meetings, courses and demonstrations where users meet each other and a representative from Idavall. All participants discuss FRI and have the opportunity to propose changes, improvements and report bugs. One of the most important parts of the busi-ness idea of Idavall is to offer a proper, friendly and professional support. The support is one of the most important possibilities to be informed about the users? needs, wishes and propos-als. This, what I called, user driven development has a lot of common with Participatory De-sign (PD) where users participate in the design of new software. PD implies that users of software should take part in decisions that affect the system and the way it is used and de-signed. Idavall make use of a kind of Customer Relationship Management (CRM), which is a concept used in the marketing arena. The objective of CRM is to create a strong, mutual and trustful relationship between supplier and customer. By using CRM in combination with PD it is possible to enhance the user participation and enable user driven development. The company has a flexible development process, which is built on an informal way of driving the process. Informal meetings are common where decisions about changes and im-provements are taken quickly. New versions are delivered about 20 times a year. The employ-ees meet several times a day in the central located coffee room and discuss problems. The development process has a lot of common with Extreme Programming (XP), which is a software development methodology that aims to make software development more flexi-ble and focus on highly flexible environments with quickly changing requirements. XP is de-scribed briefly and comparisons are made to the development process of FRI as well as short-comings of XP in the context of PD.

The world is becoming increasingly digitized, and with this trend comes an increas-ing need for storing data for companies of all sizes. For smaller enterprises, thiscould prove to be a major challenge due to limitations in knowledge and financialassets. So the purpose of this study is to investigate how smaller companies cansatisfy their needs for data storage and which database management system to usein order to not let their shortcomings hold their development and growth back. Tofulfill this purpose, a small wood processing company in Sweden is examined andused as an example. To investigate and answer the problem, literary research is con-ducted to gain knowledge about data storage and the different options for this thatexist. Microsoft Access, MySQL, and MongoDB are selected for evaluation andtheir performance is compared in controlled experiments. The results of this studyindicates that, due to the small amount of data that the example company possesses, the simplicity of Microsoft Access trumps the high performance of its competitors. However, with increasingly developed internet infrastructure, the option of hostinga database in the cloud has become a feasible option. If hosting the database in thecloud is the desired solution, Microsoft Access has a higher operating cost than theother alternatives, making MySQL come out on top.

According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, African Americans are the fastest growing entrepreneurial minority group in the United States. However, they suffer the highest business failure rates. The research design for this study was a multiple case study to explore the strategies small business owners used to succeed in business beyond 5 years. The conceptual framework for this study was the systems theory. The population was small business owners in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolis, Texas. Data collection sources included semistructured interviews, company documents, company websites, and site visit observations. The data analysis process included data cleaning, uploading transcribed interviews into qualitative data analysis software, organizing and coding, and conducting methodological triangulation against company documents. The thematic analysis led to the identification of 6 major themes contributing to company sustainability. The predominate themes included entrepreneur qualities, adequacy or lack of collateral, financial planning, and market qualities. The consensus among participants denoted that in a business environment characterized by market differentiation, effective financial planning and unique entrepreneurial characteristics contributed to company sustainability. The findings revealed several features of the successful business owners such as education, professional background, motivation, creativity, negotiation skills, networking, risk-taking, and self-efficacy were critical for company sustainability. The positive social change includes increasing the rate of small business success, supporting the U.S. economy, and improving financial security for African American entrepreneurs, their families, employees, and the community.

Selection of an optimal facility location is a challenging decision for companies, since it would be costly and dicult to change the location after an installation has been already made. Existing numerical methods in the decision-making process help companies to perform their operations with minimum cost and maximum value based on their strategic objectives. Decision making process requires the selection of relative processes among several alternatives corresponding to a set of location factors. It can be performed by multi criteria decision-making (MCDM) methods with the point of individuals or a group of decision makers. This study provides a suitable country selection process for a new packaging facility location problem. The problem is formulated by using a combination of fuzzy AHP and TOPSIS, which are the methods for MCDM problems. Since the available information for weighting the factors is subjective and imprecise, fuzzy AHP is used for determining the relative importance of the factors. Afterwards to select the best suitable country, the scores of alternatives are quantied by means of TOPSIS method. Later the results are presented, and the obtained solutions are discussed. Latvia is found as the best country for the new packaging facility. Further, using sensitivity analysis we found that the most stable countries according to predetermined factors were Latvia and Poland.

The purpose of this research project was to determine the role and contribution of tacit knowledge in the formulation of small company strategy. A literature review was carried out to identify the gaps in knowledge regarding these issues. Using a case study methodology, evidence from 3 small firms was collected around the recounting of specific strategic episodes, where the different types of knowledge being used were identified. Four criteria were used to analyse the evidence - plausibility, credibility, internal and external validity. The findings relating to each firm were presented in 3 case study reports. A comparative analysis of the findings enabled the following conclusions to be reached. The managers in the 3 small companies were capable of providing credible accounts of the ways in which they practice strategy-making to accompany the development of their firms. They have devised and developed a series of drivers which have accompanied their strategic practice. These drivers have been present since company creation; they have continued to shape the trajectories taken by each company and they are associated with specific learning patterns. They directly influence the processes the managers use to formulate strategy. Each manager has developed a specific approach to formulating strategy. The use of intuition, alongside more rational mechanisms to analyse and validate decisions was identified in the 3 cases. Intuition plays an integrating, synthesising role in paving the way for possible directions and orientations within the options envisaged. The managers in the small firms call on a wide range of personal and professional knowledge and experience when formulating strategies for their companies. In activating their strategy formulation processes, they rely on mobilising their specific versions of tacit knowing.

Innovation is key factor for a business survival, growth and in order to stay competitive. Theinnovation at a company is usually organized in projects following the company's innovation process. However, research shows the difficulties to choose an innovation process and simplyimplementing a process to an organization is unlikely to succeed. Thus, a process should becustomized to the company were it would be used. The study is based on qualitative methods at the small high-tech company Mips with the purposeto create conditions for Mips to enable working with incremental and radical innovation tosustain as a company on the global market. The study included semi-structured interviews with13 out of 14 of employees at Mips and observations that thereafter was summarized and analyzed. The result was four areas of improvement that later was transformed into one improvement proposal through three feedback iterations together with the employees at Mips. The improvement proposal is an execution plan for managing innovation that includes creating an innovation strategy to clarify the company goals, implementing a project portfoliomanagement team to assess the project portfolio and implementing a process for developmentprojects. The execution plan for managing innovation describes responsibilities for the functionsin the organization. The suggested process is an iterative process that contains methods to gainempathy for the users, defining what is of importance for the users and the projects, differentmethods to generating ideas from different perspectives and how to turn the ideas tangible, how to test and get feedback from the concepts. There is a proposed system for how to assess the projects through status- and decision meetings and a structure for who is responsible for what inthe development projects. The main finding in this study is that it confirms that Mips as a small company was facing similar challenges as larger firms are facing such as need of structure for how to conduct innovation projects, clear responsibility distribution, clear goals and freedom for the employees to choose how to implement the goals.

Annotation:
Voice mail is a computer-aided telephone system which is capable of storing and forwarding spoken messages. The voice mail market has been and is still focused on larger companies since they comprise a sizable amount of the installed base of voice processing systems (Radisich, 1994). Consequently, all voice mail research has been centered on the large company and concentrates on advantages or disadvantages found in these substantial companies. This study focused on the implementation and diffusion of a relatively new communication technology and its consequences in an unresearched arena--the small company. Also a comparatively new methodology in the field of communications research, grounded theory, was used to explore the impact of a new technology, thus possibly advancing the credibility of this research methodology. The results of this pilot study on voice mail in a small company found diffusion to be extremely successful, even to the point of surprising some of the subjects with their total acceptance of the technology. The study results indicated that the small company can benefit from voice mail usage in similar ways to the large company, especially if the company has travelers or off-site locations. The results implied that there are some ways that voice mail can assist in the small company where it has not previously had a reported effect in the large company---as a negotiating, organizing, and delegating tool. The results of the study could provide insights for other small companies concerned with successful usage of the voice mail technology in similar environments. Several concepts on novel uses of voice mail surfaced as a result of this study. These concepts could provide hypothesis for empirical testing to further voice mail investigation. The study concluded that voice mail is a communication technology that is an accepted and beneficial tool which offered several major advantages that the subject small company was able to successfully utilize.

This thesis is about the oneness of working and living, and about the making of workplaces that support and encourage the idea that one's work can be an integral part of one's life. The opening position is that there is a "paradigm shift" occurring in our society which influences the way that we think about our work in relation to our lives. Rather than experiencing work as a separate entity in time and space from our home life, work can be fully engaged in our lives; an activity that requires us and interests us, which helps us to find meaning and makes us care. Our friends and families can know our work and spend time with us in our workplace. Our personalities and actions can be both similar and complimentary in the work environment and the home environment. The search in this thesis is for ways of making work environments that acknowledge our current culture, society, and technology, yet respond to and support this "new" way of working and living. This search involves an investigation into working and workplaces in pre-industrial and early industrial times: an analysis of how ·people worked and how they interacted with the settings in which they worked. This analysis provides clues which are then used to propose ways that a modern building might support an integrated attitude about living and working. The design project is for a small office building in Cambridge, Massachusetts for Linguistics International, a publisher of foreign language and computer science college textbooks, currently based in Boston. Linguistics is a suitable subject for this project for several reasons: books--information-are an important icon of our times and for our society; editing/publishing is a creative process; perhaps most importantly, the project addresses the design of white-collar office work and the office environment, the most common type of workplace in our information-based economy.

Annotation:

This thesis describes the work done in the second stage of the implementation of the Automatic Passenger Counter (APC) system at the Roanoke Valley - Metro Transit Company. This second stage deals with the preparation of a few reports and plots that would help the transit managers in efficiently managing the transit system. The reports and plots give an evaluation of the system and service operations by which the decision makers can support their decisions.

For an efficient management of the transit system, data on ridership activity, running times schedule information, and fare revenue is required. From this data it is possible to produce management information reports and summary statistics.

The present data collection program at Roanoke Valleyâ Metro is carried by using checkers and supervisors to collect ridership and schedule adherence information using manual methods. The information needed for efficient management of transit operations is both difficult and expensive to obtain. The new APC system offers the management with a new and powerful tool that will enhance their capability to make better decisions when allocating the service needs. The data from the APC are essential for the transit propertys ongoing planning and scheduling activites. The management could easily quantify the service demands on a route or for the whole system as desired by the user.

Estimating future losses is integral to setting aside appropriate reserves in the insurance industry. This study analyzes different Chain Ladder reserving methods based on weighted-least square regression that consider different function of weights. These methods are tested on 78 NAIC fully developed loss triangles. While the CRE Chain Ladder method is selected based on its performance, this method does not work well for a small number of NAIC companies that may have erratic changes in their loss trends. For these outliers, two other methods were explored for the early development years; the nearest neighbor technique and mixture of linear regressions. A recommendation is then made to a small Midwestern insurance company on the best methodology to use for estimating the loss reserves based on the actual data provided. These results can be useful to any other insurance company currently using Chain Ladder methods in loss reserving practices.

The mining industry is an old industry with established traditions and ways of working. Even though digitalisation has been well established in many other industries, has the mining industry just started adopting it. Digitalisation has impacted the types of products created and creating complex products that consist of electronic components and software that collect and share data. These products influence the development and create a complex development process when combined. However, the digital and the physical development processes need to be considered the limiting factors of the other.  This thesis is exploring the field of digital-physical development through mapping the development at a small case company in the lead of the digital transformation of the industry. The map sets the foundation to examine how agile practices are adopted at the case company in the purpose of exploring the effects on the complex development. This is a qualitative study with semi-structured interviews as primary data, and literature within the research field of product development, process theory and agile adoption as a theoretical framework.  The resulting process map can be found in Chapter 4.2 The Development Process. The map is visualising the dependencies between the different functions by describing activities, input, output, information, and resources of each function. The maturity of the processes found was low due to the ad hoc nature of the development. The structure and artefacts are considered to be agile practices that affect the studied process the most. The size of the organisation, the individual drive and minimal documentation allows fast communication and problem solving between the functions. This was a study of a small company with a low maturity level in their development process, which made it difficult to make any assumption about the efficiency of their process. Since this is a single case study in a growing research field, can a generalisation not be considered. Though, the results of this study can be found valuable for the case company for developing their processes and general practices.

Throughout the world, corporate or good governance has become such a dominating terminology in the ever -increasing business vocabulary. Its fast rise and strategic relevance to the global business communi ty is part ly due to the desi re by the business leaders wor ldwide to be seen to be doing something about the scourge of corporate failures resulting f rom poor governance. The objective of the research was to establish to what extent Smal l and Medium Enterpr ises (SMEs) comply with good governance principles and practices. The SMEs in the Port Elizabeth CBD were chosen as the representative population of the SME sector throughout the country. The research methodology included: A li terature study to determine, on the one hand the current good governance pract ices global ly, and on the other the role, relevance and the challenges of the SMEs in the South Af rican Economy. An empir ical study in order to obtain the empir ical evidence concerning SME compliance to good governance principles and pract ice. This was done through a survey of SME sector in the Port Elizabeth CBD. Lastly, the conclusion and recommendations. The conclusion was reached, inter alia, that the major ity of SMEs do not comply wi th good governance principles and pract ices for various reasons. Therefore the following recommendations were made: Recommended that the organisational accountants appointed in terms of the law should not confine themselves to the financial aspects of the business only, but also look at governance of these small businesses. Recommended that a sub-code for SMEs be developed. Recommended that the existing code of governance be amended to include a clause that requires large and establish businesses to insist on good governance in the SMEs they deal with at any level. Due to the nature of globalization, new strategies have been designed to break into new markets. Joint Venture is a common strategy to enter new markets and by using a Joint Venture, companies share risks and establish new contacts with local knowledge. Brazil is a market where foreign investors gain more and more interest. Brazil's economy is growing fast and made well during the global financial crisis. The middle class in Brazil is constantly growing and for the first time, poverty is not a majority in Brazil. In an International Joint Venture (IJV), it is usually a foreign company establishing a partnership with a local company. Often, IJVs fail because companies have problems collaborating, depending on different variables. In this thesis, we chose to analyze the cultural barriers in a Brazilian-Swedish IJV on the Brazilian market. The purpose of this thesis is to gain an understanding and describe cultural barriers in an IJV partnership, and high-light those to increase the chances for successful IJVs between Brazilian and Swedish companies in the future. This thesis is qualitative, with an abductive approach, in order to gain a deeper and better understanding of experienced barriers. We have chosen to see culture from both a national and an organizational perspective as earlier research has showed that national culture affects the organizational culture within an IJV. Using Hofstede's (1991) four dimensions of national culture as a supplement to Wilson’s (2001) four factors influencing the organizational culture, we have conducted four interviews in two Swedish-Brazilian IJV companies located in São Paulo, Brazil. The companies we have chosen to interview have been small or medium-sized manufacturing. Interviews were conducted face-to-face in a comfortable environment for all respondents. In our analysis, we used matrices to make it easier to see what differences and/or similarities there are between the case-companies.Results of this study, demonstrate that the experiences from the two case-studies are well in line with each other. The organizational structure in Brazil has been perceived as more hierarchical than the Swedish vertical and more open structure. This in turn, has strengthened the differences in communication between managers and employees, which been perceived as more top-down in Brazil than in Sweden. Our conclusion is that cultural barriers have been perceived, in the perception of the leaders’ expected behavior, language barriers, differences in planning and management of uncertain situations, Brazil's more family-oriented society and close relationship between private life and work in the Brazilian market.Several of these barriers have been experienced during the early start-up of an IJV, something we believe increases the importance of being well prepared for cultural barriers that may arise. The importance of an agreement upon the structure and policies at the company at an early stage is crucial, to reduce future possible conflicts. Show mutual respect and understanding for one's partners’ culture and experienced cultural barriers, use these to avoid any negative effects, and instead create a positive impact for the IJV.

This study is about rapid growth in SMEs from an entrepreneur’s or manager’s perspective and it aim to find practices in order to enable and drive rapid growth. The purpose of this thesis is to understand how owner-led small businesses can be managed in order to maximize the profitable long term growth of the company. In order to understand this we have had a pragmatic perspective and have attempted to find practices that drive and enable fast growth. The study consists of an extensive literature study on the subject and five case studies of Swedish rapid growth companies. Each case study consisted of gathering secondary data and conducting 1-4 interviews at each company with Entrepreneurs, CEOs, CFOs and Sales managers. The result from the literature study and the case studies is a model for growth that is shown below. The model consists of eight different areas that are important to drive or enable growth in companies.  Each area in the model was identified as a driver, enabler or blocker of growth for each case study.   The conclusions from this thesis are five propositions regarding rapid growth that is listed below. ü  Proposition 1: All the areas in our analysis model can either be a blocker, an enabler or a driver of growth. ü  Proposition 2: It is possible to deliberately transform an area from a blocker, or enabler, into a driver of growth. ü  Proposition 3: It is important to make the business scalable so no area becomes a blocker of growth. ü  Proposition 4: The three areas, time monopoly, sales, and leadership could be considered as primary drivers for growth. ü  Proposition 5: The two areas culture and expansion could be considered as primary enablers of growth. The findings from this study are highly valuable for managers or entrepreneurs that want to increase growth of their companies.

I focus on Company A of the Nineteenth Texas Infantry, C.S.A., and its unique status among other Confederate military units. The raising of the company within the narrative of the regiment, its battles and campaigns, and the post-war experience of its men are the primary focal points of the thesis. In the first chapter, a systematic analysis of various aspects of the recruit’s background is given, highlighting the wealth of Company A’s officers and men. The following two chapters focus on the campaigns and battles experienced by the company and the praise bestowed on the men by brigade and divisional staff. The final chapter includes a postwar analysis of the survivors from Company A, concentrating on their locations, professions, and contributions to society, which again illustrate the achievements accomplished by the veterans of this unique Confederate unit. As a company largely drawn from Jefferson, Texas, a growing inland port community, Company A of the Nineteenth Texas Infantry differed from other companies in the regiment, and from most units raised across the Confederacy. Their unusual backgrounds, together with their experiences during and after the war, provide interesting perspectives on persistent questions concerning the motives and achievements of Texas Confederates.

Innovation has become of increased importance to a company’ competitive advantage during the past years. Over the years, the importance of services has increased. Information and Tele- Communication Technologies (ICT) have become a supportive role in almost any type of industry. The ICT market is continuously changing at a very high pace. In order to cope with these changes, companies active within the IT and software industry needs to unceasingly maintain their solutions up to date. This thesis provides a case study on Digital Marketing AB, a small company active in the ITindustry, delivering tools for planning, sending, and analyzing digital marketing campaigns. Digital Marketing AB operates within a market that is changing rapidly. As new technologies emerge, existing technologies becomes known, and low-cost versions of the present technology appears in the market, eroding revenues from more differentiated services. Furthermore, if the companies are small, and do not have the same financial resources as bigger actors, it is important for these companies to rely on other types of strengths. Companies also need to make sure that they are able to sell the new technology in a way that is attractive to their customers, but at the same time profitable for the company. In other words, they need to integrate the new technology in a business model. The thesis concludes that Digital Marketing AB needs to develop new technology with regards to a specific target customer group, but also to work together with the customers in order to develop an attractive and competitive business model. Furthermore, the thesis concludes that how the business model will be designed will determine the success of adopting a new technology. Other issues that arise who have to do with the design of the business model are how to package and position the new technology.

This research had explored the performance variations on a selected a domestic small to medium sized securities company in a six years period (three years before and after the establishment of financial holding companies, 1999~2001 and 2002~2004) using traditional evaluation, MVA, and EVA. The research results are as follows: Traditional evaluation method: Under the traditional evaluation method, regardless of ROA, ROE, or EPS, the performance of the subject securities company after the establishment of financial holdings was better than the performance before the establishment. But the market shares and settlement amounts dropped dramatically due to higher corporate investment percentage and intensive competition among financial holdings. MVA evaluation method: Subject Company’s MVA was negative NTD 842,950,000 prior to the financial holdings and negative NTD 661,760,000 after; the results had shown that the establishment of financial holding company had no negative impact on the subject’s performance. EVA evaluation method: Subject Company’s average EVA was NTD 27,823,000 and NTD 120,829,000 respectively before and after the establishment of financial holdings; the results had also shown that not only the subject’s performance was not impacted by the establishment of financial holding company but instead experienced a healthy increase in performance under the intensive competition situations. Strategy: The non-financial-holding small to medium sized securities companies should try to confirm their market positions and competitive edges through innovative thinking, employ new concepts, willingness toward necessary changes, and devise and execute future strategic planning.

“Job Analysis” is the basic constitution of human resource management, and it is also a management activity in an organization. The main purpose is to collect, analyze, and integrate all kinds of information from the job and its correlation. “Job analysis” also offers objective, sciential, and useful messages in order to organize projects and plans out human resource management and other administrative functions. Two kinds of reading reports that are “Job description” and “Job specification” can be the result of job analysis. “Job description” is the standard description of jobs in human resource. “Routine” is the main purpose of job description, for example, mission, duty, and responsibility, and etc., “Job description” can provide overall details and deep-going description in order to set up the foundation in human resource or other administrative work. Besides, every employee and staff can comprehend the aim exactly that their organization wants to succeed. “Job specification” is the foundation and definition of qualification in hiring employee and staff. Moreover, “people” is the central point, for example, knowledge, technology, ability, job quality and etc., The main goal is to describe the standard qualification in each position. It can provide the basis in hiring, selecting, training, evaluation, and deploying. This research is to adopt observation, work diary, questionnaires, and interview in processing job analysis. It is an integrated method. The ”Job Description” and the “Job Specification” are the consequence of utilizing job analysis. Moreover, this research is to investigate the problems that the case companies will face. In addition, job analysis can provide the analysis of difference altogether. The conclusion is as following: 1.To establish “Job Description” and “Job Specification,” and to describe the details for each employee and staff. As a result, it has the standard requirement. Select different persons for different duties; recruit and utilize talented people; be well suited with one’s place; get twofold results with half the effort. 2.To provide the forecast of human resource in case company, to know the work content exactly, and the qualification of talent. The purpose is to be prepared beforehand and supply the internal training for employee and staff in case the insufficient of external talent. 3.It is the foundation to have an efficient educational training, the job description and the job specification can provide the resource of educational training for case company in the future. 4.In the procedure of job analysis, it is obviously that employee and staff’s level of quality are inadequate. ABSTRACT In the last decade, the financial storm has spread over the world. Since Taiwan joins WTO in the early 2002 , the impact for our domestic economy is wide and deep. Financial liberalization, globalization and integration seem to be concerned by international financial industry. Stock market plays an important role of attracting private capital and facilitate financial market. Whether broker or self-operation, securities firms are the essential part of the stock market. It is important issue that how securities firms improve themselves to deal with the environmental impact and become a outstanding company between many counterparts and potential competitors. Thus it is very important for security company to take necessary measures to satisfy the clients, and to build its own management peculiarities in order to take the superiority in operation. In addition, security company have to enforce the auditing of its operation status and evaluation of employee’s performance by reviewing performance evaluation to reduce the risks and increase operation efficiency. Because financial performance can evaluate only the past operational result, not the overall performance, a apply the Balance Scorecard methodology to construct local security company performance evaluation index that can used to measure company’s performance.

In 1955, the slogan of Japanese 5S was “Safety begins from sorting and ends by setting in order”. Many Japanese companies had successfully implemented 5S and thus improved their efficiency. Significant benefits appeared on cost control, time-of-delivery, and even labor safety. However, due to differences between each other’s lifestyle and background, the perceptions of the positioning or the cleanliness are also different. Consequently, there must be severe challenges in the implementation process of 5S. This study discusses the context of A company uses 5S management to create a standardized working environment and analyzes its effectiveness and impediments after implementation. Establishing a systematic method for waste minimization in production line and extending to all departments of A company without sacrificing productivity are the goal. The study is, first of all, through the discussion of literature and compiling relevant theories, to understand the implications of 5S management, the process of standardization, and demonstrate the effectiveness to the companies. Therefore, this study aims for providing guidelines and giving support to business administrators and to whom may intend to implement 5S management.

In this study, we use bank's credit risk rating table, combined with bank senior managers proposed research views, summarized in the modified version of the risk assessment model. We add some checklists and different industries adjust the rating parameters to improve new version of the risk assessment model. By to doing this, we can reduce the bank's credit risk. In this study, we take three companies to support our research. And thru this case study, we based on the financial information provided by the company for in-depth analysis. We use new version of risk assessment to evaluate the risk and obtained different outcomes of credit ratings. We found interesting result to use new assessment methodology. A Company was given “A rating” from B because all the financial indicates were positive. While B Company can not obtain bank’s credit line due to its long operating days. For C Company, was given “C rating” for it’s over concentrating too few buyers. Consolidated results of the rating, resulting in major financial study of SMEs, such as: (1) Turnover of Accounts receivable is too long or long-lost recoverable excessive accumulation of inventories, which may lead to long turnover times of cash flow. (2) Purchase fixed assets lead long-term liabilities were supported by short-term funds. (3) Too many bank’s credit facilities or shareholder loan or low register capital bring in high debt ratio (4) May be due to declining sales or business expansion too fast, bank loans are too high, result in high loan/ sales ratio. (5) Income before income tax is too low, probably because of the high cost of management and marketing, or product profit is too low, resulting in reduced ability to pay interest charges. As a highly competitive era of the global economy, the fact that the 21st century is the era of knowledge-based economy and competition of human resources is constantly accentuated in many management articles. Surely a company''s development needs qualified human resources. Meanwhile, the promotion of human resources is increasingly paid more attention, especially various trainings that arranged by individual companies, in addition to the entire human resources from society. However, in the traditional corporate organization, the units of education and training usually set up in the Human Resources Department. Additionally, in general, the main target of education and training are the internal staff. Shall we follow the concept like that, or re-examine the potential needs of customers from the internal and external organization to find out new orientations and opportunities? As a result, how to create new education and training models and orientation to make sure that the education and training are not hidden in the door which act as a hand behind the scenes? How to change this kind of role and eventually become the assistant for business competitiveness, even a kind of power hand in commercial activities, which means that the education and training could become a significant learning and create new competitive advantages? This is the main motive for this study. This research will be tested by action research: 1) whether or not promote the interests of relationship 2) whether or not develop shared values and communication 3) whether or not enhance relationship commitment and trust through the education and training between distributors and channels, in order to get closer cooperation and upgrade of recognition, bring the improvement of operating performance, enhance the competitiveness of enterprises. That means we plan to probe into the model which combines education training and relationship marketing by empirical cases. The process of this empirical study includes the selection of distributors and channels, curriculum selection and implementation and depth interview after training, after-training behavior survey, after-training behavior and attitude of observation, sales data collection and the analysis of related information. From the above, this study combine the relations interests, shared values and communication with the education and training courses between distributors and channels to enhance relationship commitment and the degree of trust to make cooperation more closely, the level of recognition higher, and reduce the tendency of departure, which eventually bring the improvement of operating performance, enhance the competitiveness of enterprises.

Prior to 1998, local family-owned and operated single auditorium movie theaters dominated the Taiwan cinema exhibition industry. In that year, the opening of the 17-plex Warner Village Cinemas (WVC), a joint venture between Village Roadshow and Warner Brothers Theaters located in the Hsinyi District of Taipei, disrupted the entire dynamics of the market. For the first time an international cinema chain opened a state of the art facility in Taiwan forcing local operators to adjust their tactics and strategies, initiating the downfall of Shimending as the center of gravity for cinema exhibition. In the six years from the time of opening their first cineplex, WVC went on to open six other locations: Kaohsiung, Tainan, Taichung (2), and Hsinchu (2), but then decided to divest from the market. One of the sites that WVC had signed a lease for was the Cathay Life building in Tienmou; in light of the shareholders desire to depart from the Taiwan market, they sold the rights of this site to a consortium of local investors, WVUG, but maintained a management contract with the new owners. Another site that had been previously committed to by a local cinema exhibitor was the Miramar Entertainment Complex Cineplex. Miramar was unique in that aside from 8 mainline auditoriums, it would have the first commercial IMAX auditorium in Taiwan. Prior to the sale of the company to a consortium of local investors and Golden Harvest from Hong Kong, WVC secured the management contract for the Miramar cinemas. The first chapter provides background to the research and introduces the Case and the questions I seek to answer. Chapter 2 attempts to give an overview of the cinema exhibition industry with special focus on the particularities of the Taiwan market. Chapter 3 provides an introduction to WVC, Miramar, Tienmou, and the events leading to the breakup. Taiwan is famous for manufacturing quality products, especially for Original Equipment Manufacturing. Many top global corporations (such as Apple, LV, CUCCI, NIKE, etc..) purchase parts produced in Taiwan. However, globalization has significantly increased business competitions. Taiwanese companies strive hard to come up with Blue Ocean Strategies and fight against their global competitors. Among all, developing strong brands is no doubt one of the best solutions. The question is how manufacturing companies can establish strong brands. After 2000, various Taiwanese companies attempted the story-telling method. Meanwhile, visual designers suddenly became the so-called “brand designers”. Nevertheless, the attempts weren’t successful as very few quality brands were actually created. The essence of branding was never well understood and carried out. Corporation Identity system (CI) is a very powerful and complicated branding tool composed of Mind Identity (MI), Visual Identity (VI), and Behavior Identity (BI). CI is the personification of a corporation in which MI represents its brain, VI its image, and BI its behavior. Large corporations need to allocate copious amount of resources in branding before they can harvest the return. For small-midsized firms lacking both financial resources and talent teams, they indeed need highly strategic plans to establish valuable brand positions and receive financial benefits. Most small-midsized firms only execute VI by changing their logos/packaging and by telling touching stories. The effect is surely very limited. Efarm has gone through the same process in previous years. It was found that with only VI, there would be problems in both internal and external communications: employees cannot be fully convinced by the core values, nor can they convince their customers. A modified plan is needed to establish CI. It is clear that Efarm’s future depends on its brand strength. To better understand branding, Efarm’s co-owner, Hsiu Jung Huang, started her EMBA at National Chung Hsing University. Her research focuses on CI from day one with the help from two experienced branding expert, Mr. Shi Huang Wang and Mr. Ming Ren Qiu. Efarm’s MI is developed by taking the company’s history and the founder’s original aspiration into account; VI and BI are also established subsequently. Efarm is located at the countryside in Taiwan. The core values of Efarm is found by “finding the values of Taiwanese countryside lifestyle to the world”. Several methods were implemented in this research. In-depth interviews were conducted with the Efarm founder, Mr.Chia Mao Wu. Literature researches were performed to analyze branding/CI theory and practical. The case study method (including the STP method) was used to establish CI. Discussions with employees and customers were also held to gain both internal and external insights. Ultimately, the core value of “befriending customers, sharing with friends” was reached; the branding DNA of “friendliness, sharing, and traditional flavor “was agreed upon. Efarm is very open to gladly share the research process and insights with the public.

The Research on How to Establish the Supervisory System of Financial Holding Company in Taiwan To exercise the synthetic management efficiency of financial institutes, consolidate the incorporate surveillance of financial cross-sector management, accelerate the health development of financial market, and maintain the public interests, the Financial Holding Company Act, as called a revolutionary Act, was legislated on June 27, 2001, and formally implemented on November 1, 2001. Because of the rushed nature of the legislative process, many people have questioned its content. The Act also lacks a clear supervisory system, even if it has the power to supervise many financial products. However, it is necessary to establish a good supervisory system in order to eliminate all disadvantages and develop our financial holding company into a healthy condition. The thesis focuses on how to establish a supervisory system on our financial holding company, and its goals are the following three items. (1) By studying our recent financial supervisory system, we can understand how to reform the system. (2) By studying the construction of our financial holding company’s interior control, we can understand how to instruct the internal control system and internal audit system, and consolidate the corporate governance mechanism in order to eliminate all disadvantages and develop a healthy condition. (3) By studying the construction of our financial holding company’s exterior control, we can understand how to protect the customer’s personal information. We can also use the study to analyze how the authority examine the financial checkup done by the financial holding company and how the accountants execute the relative financial checkup works entrusted by the Ministry of Finance. After the study, we find that there are still many problems in our financial supervisory system. For example, the system does not have a single authority, a well-designed system and enough professional inspectors. These disadvantages show up that we need to amend our insufficient financial supervisory system. Basically the Act has provided a good provision on internal control and audit, but it still needs a further clear provision on internal control examined by the accountants. For the system of corporate governance, the Act sill needs to be amended, so that an independent board director and auditor are to be established, thus avoiding the problems that usually come when they also work for other companies on a part-time basis. Finally, we have also located some problems with regards to the external control of financial holding company, the option for the customer’s right to drop out, the relative expedients and examinations among the different financial markets, and the financial examination entrusted by the accountants.
