Case study of a small company founded in 1987 by «amateur" entrepreneurs who entrusted their management to operational executives used to «command done» without considering the importance of a plan and without basic technical information. The objective is to apply operational research to a production process of a company seeking to establish a level of input-process-product combination that maximizes the company's income or profit and /or minimizes its operating costs. Simple and easily interpreted mathematical models are used. The case claims the importance of guiding the production manager towards basic analytical information that allows him to identify the current state of the company and its resources in order to make technically feasible and economically profitable decisions. It shows that the application of the operational investigation does not imply the modification of the installed capacity of the company; on the contrary, their solutions correct the greater or lesser use of that capacity, bringing the input-output relationship closer to the maximum usable, which implies greater profits.

Positioning and branding in the minds of the target market are imperative for any company. Small businesses find it challenging because of limited resources and budgets. Small businesses adopt a number of innovative ideas and initiatives to develop and build their brands. They focus on finding a compelling product and improving its performance, establishing brands with limited associations, and providing product and service trials for customers. They use the internet optimally to do digital communication and depend on word of mouth and buzz marketing to do cost-effective communications. They develop an integrated set of brand elements and leverage secondary brand associations. They utilize their scarce resources optimally, conduct cost-effective marketing research to analyze their customers, and focus on concentrated marketing. All these strategies and initiatives help small businesses to position and establish their brands in the minds of the target market.

Storage and maintenance are essential in warehouse operation management. Accordingly, this study takes a logistics distribution center as the case. In this case, Logistics Company A and X Beverage Company establish a logistics partnership in the supply chain. Logistics Company A is responsible for designing and handling X Beverage Company’s cargo storage, transportation, and distribution businesses in big and small retail shops in Y region. Reducing the goods overstock, stock, and stock-out rate and improving the goods’ freshness are important because beverages are classified as fast-moving consumer goods. This study develops the storage strategy for goods in X Beverage Company through classified management of goods by activity-based classification (ABC) with the primary aim of increasing the efficiency of storage management. Second, goods stock and management strategies are developed with the aid of EIQ (entry, item, and quantity) analysis and in accordance with results of the ABC classification. Finally, the EOQ (economic ordering quantity) stock control model is established for large retailers and small retail stores.

Purpose Many leisure boat manufacturers have thrived on designing and building highly customized boats based on longstanding traditions of craftsmanship. To achieve efficient value chains, it is not enough to optimize each process step, but also important to achieve a smooth flow through the dependencies between each process steps. The purpose of this paper is to focus on assessing enablers and disablers for operational integration in a craft-oriented small enterprise. Design/methodology/approach One case company has been studied, to identify enablers and disablers for operational integration in the value chain. The research methodology is based on semi-structured interviews with selected persons from different levels within the company. Findings The results indicate the importance of management promotion and support of integration and a strong relationship between foremen and operators. Furthermore, to avoid functional myopias, mechanisms to encourage horizontal integration could be useful. Small company and informal culture make integration easier. However, to further establish a common standardized platform, could be necessary. Even small physical barriers in the layout were experienced to affect the integration negatively. Research limitations/implications This has been an exploratory study of one single craft-oriented enterprise; hence it is difficult to generalize. Practical implications Based on empirical findings from the case study, recommendations on how to achieve better operational integration will be presented. Originality/value The research initiative provides knowledge experience of operational integration from a case study in one company within craft and artisan sector in Norway.

Self-employment and self-entrepreneurship activities among graduates in local and global economic trends lead to the birth of small scale animation studios. Government funding and business exposure in higher learning institutions are driving the young workforce to establish their own company rather than working for others. The current generations of graduates are very much in favor of entrepreneurship and begin to break away from the notion of stability in conventional professions due to the lack of flexible work-life balance and office benefits. Company ownership and financial freedom self-management remain the most recent phenomena in today's graduates. The idea of maintaining self-expression and control of the personal intellectual property is driving the young animator to venture into a small scale studio setup (4S).

Fraudulent financial statements (FFS) are now placed under greater public scrutiny following an increase in the number of collapses among companies due to management fraud with loses on average at 5% of revenue (ACFE, 2014). There is consensus that management fraud is an on-going reality and no single organization is immune from the damage caused by the fraudsters (KPMG Malaysia, 2009). Small and medium sized businesses are also threatened by fraudulent activities and statistics showed organizations with fewer than 100 employees experienced more fraud cases than larger corporations (ACFE, 2008). Most of the companies in the automotive industry in Malaysia are small and medium scaled, hence these companies bear a greater burden and face higher risks of fraud. Precautionary measures in preventing fraud are crucial; however, with limited resources, effective detection may be severely curtailed. This paper assesses the possibility of FFS in a small medium automotive company in Malaysia using three statistical analyses namely the Beneish model, Altman Z-Score and Financial Ratio. The findings show that there are riskier zones that need to be further investigated by the management. It is suggested for the company to establish an internal audit unit to provide assurance on the companys operations, financial reporting accuracy and adherence to the regulations.

The article is aimed at defining the feasibility of using the Sitniks CRM software for small commodity businesses, examining its compliance with the standard and the main competitive advantages among such products. Analyzing and generaling the scientific works of many scholars, the positive impact of high-quality information provision on the activities of the enterprise is proved. However, despite the obvious benefit of using automation systems, a bigger share of Ukrainian entrepreneurs do not use CRM systems (Customer Relationship Management systems) either due to lack of awareness or unsuccessful implementation experience. The article uses comparative and matrix analyses. A comparative analysis of competitors shows that the researched CRM system stands out among others with a high level of flexibility and personalization, which is the main advantage of this software. During the SWOT analysis, the factors influencing the development of the company were worked out in detail. It is found that the main drawback of this software is a relatively long implementation period, and its capabilities and threats are, accordingly, scaling and increasing competitors in a niche. It is concluded that the Sitniks CRM system is not just a system for simplifying and automating business processes, but a platform that has sufficiently powerful functionality due to customization, integration, tracking capabilities and ease of use. The implementation of this software will lead the company to increase productivity, allowing to effectively plan and control, as well as establish strong relationships with customers.

Software engineering has been facing a crisis for several years now - there is more demand for new software than there is ability to supply. Software reuse is a potential way to tackle the problems caused by the software crisis with its promises of increased productivity and cheaper development costs. Several software reuse successes have been reported, but these have been predominantly in large, well structured companies. However, there are numerous smaller companies that could also benefit from reuse if it were made available to them. This thesis addresses these issues by implementing a reuse programme in a small company. An incremental approach to reuse introduction is adopted, following the Seven Steps to Success, and 'lightweight' processes are recommended to support the reuse programme. A prototype tool set, ReThree- C++, was developed to automate support for the reuse programme. The results of the case study are presented. The reuse programme was successful, with benefits to the company including both increased speed of production and financial gains from selling reusable components. The challenges faced are also identified. Details of the tool set giving automated support for reuse are also presented. The tool set is an approach to reuse repository control which also integrates information abstraction from C++ source code to generate class hierarchy charts and software documentation automatically. It helps developers store, retrieve, understand and use reusable components. The usefulness of the tool set is shown with an experiment and as part of the case study. The purpose of the thesis is to show that small companies can implement reuse, and that the method presented supports the introduction of a reuse programme. It concludes that although challenges were faced, great benefits can be gained by using the method with automated support for reuse in a small company.

Nowadays business atmosphere is to constantly come up with new improvements, in order to become more competitive, or simply stay competitive.Lean manufacturing rose up few decades ago and is now famous for its radical improvements but also for its difficulty to implement. The aim of this study is to get a better understanding of how can Lean bring such important changes, but also what must be done in order to implement it.In order to solve the problem of this report, it was decided to conduct a quantitative research relying on a case study. The company chosen wants to implement Lean but does not really know how to achieve it, so it is a very good opportunity for this project to collaborate with it and see what can be done to implement Lean manufacturing. The results of this thesis demonstrate the need of implementing a philosophy, a way of thinking, rather than different production tools. People must also be prepared for long implementation, which can take between 5 to 10 years. One of the key factors for this implementation is the involvement and empowerment of workers, who will massively contribute to the change process by removing different kind of waste which slow down the processes.

Small businesses are critical to the health of the United States economy as they account for approximately 50% of all jobs and 99% of all firms. The purpose for this descriptive multiunit case study was to explore what strategies small business owners used to achieve profitability by the end of the first 5 years of opening their business. The sample comprised 4 small business owners who have been profitable by Year 5 of being in business in Denver, Colorado. The conceptual framework for this study was built upon the general systems theory. The data were collected through semistructured interviews and company documents. Transcript review and member checking were completed to strengthen credibility and trustworthiness. Based on the methodological triangulation of the data sources collected, 3 emergent themes were identified after completing the 5 stages of data analysis: seasonality of the business, passion and dedication of the small business owner, and hiring the right employees. The findings from this study may contribute to social change by providing insights and strategies for small business owners in preparing and sustaining profitability. The data from this study may contribute to the prosperity of the small business owners' employees, their families, communities, and the local economy.

Field studies, interviews and participative observations have been the main methods in this master thesis where the author has studied, and partially participated, in the development process of a booking system called FRI. Idavall is the small company that develops this suc-cessful software despite small resources. Characteristic for Idavall is in the way they manage to involve their about 1300 users in the development process. The development process is highly flexible which is required when rapidly changes are common. The overall question in this thesis is: How do Idavall manage to develop this software in a flexible way and successfully involve their users in the development process? Idavall arranges FRI-meetings, courses and demonstrations where users meet each other and a representative from Idavall. All participants discuss FRI and have the opportunity to propose changes, improvements and report bugs. One of the most important parts of the busi-ness idea of Idavall is to offer a proper, friendly and professional support. The support is one of the most important possibilities to be informed about the users? needs, wishes and propos-als. This, what I called, user driven development has a lot of common with Participatory De-sign (PD) where users participate in the design of new software. PD implies that users of software should take part in decisions that affect the system and the way it is used and de-signed. Idavall make use of a kind of Customer Relationship Management (CRM), which is a concept used in the marketing arena. The objective of CRM is to create a strong, mutual and trustful relationship between supplier and customer. By using CRM in combination with PD it is possible to enhance the user participation and enable user driven development. The company has a flexible development process, which is built on an informal way of driving the process. Informal meetings are common where decisions about changes and im-provements are taken quickly. New versions are delivered about 20 times a year. The employ-ees meet several times a day in the central located coffee room and discuss problems. The development process has a lot of common with Extreme Programming (XP), which is a software development methodology that aims to make software development more flexi-ble and focus on highly flexible environments with quickly changing requirements. XP is de-scribed briefly and comparisons are made to the development process of FRI as well as short-comings of XP in the context of PD.

The world is becoming increasingly digitized, and with this trend comes an increas-ing need for storing data for companies of all sizes. For smaller enterprises, thiscould prove to be a major challenge due to limitations in knowledge and financialassets. So the purpose of this study is to investigate how smaller companies cansatisfy their needs for data storage and which database management system to usein order to not let their shortcomings hold their development and growth back. Tofulfill this purpose, a small wood processing company in Sweden is examined andused as an example. To investigate and answer the problem, literary research is con-ducted to gain knowledge about data storage and the different options for this thatexist. Microsoft Access, MySQL, and MongoDB are selected for evaluation andtheir performance is compared in controlled experiments. The results of this studyindicates that, due to the small amount of data that the example company possesses, the simplicity of Microsoft Access trumps the high performance of its competitors. However, with increasingly developed internet infrastructure, the option of hostinga database in the cloud has become a feasible option. If hosting the database in thecloud is the desired solution, Microsoft Access has a higher operating cost than theother alternatives, making MySQL come out on top.

According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, African Americans are the fastest growing entrepreneurial minority group in the United States. However, they suffer the highest business failure rates. The research design for this study was a multiple case study to explore the strategies small business owners used to succeed in business beyond 5 years. The conceptual framework for this study was the systems theory. The population was small business owners in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolis, Texas. Data collection sources included semistructured interviews, company documents, company websites, and site visit observations. The data analysis process included data cleaning, uploading transcribed interviews into qualitative data analysis software, organizing and coding, and conducting methodological triangulation against company documents. The thematic analysis led to the identification of 6 major themes contributing to company sustainability. The predominate themes included entrepreneur qualities, adequacy or lack of collateral, financial planning, and market qualities. The consensus among participants denoted that in a business environment characterized by market differentiation, effective financial planning and unique entrepreneurial characteristics contributed to company sustainability. The findings revealed several features of the successful business owners such as education, professional background, motivation, creativity, negotiation skills, networking, risk-taking, and self-efficacy were critical for company sustainability. The positive social change includes increasing the rate of small business success, supporting the U.S. economy, and improving financial security for African American entrepreneurs, their families, employees, and the community.

A quantitative risk based approach is required in order to establish robust, risk-based plans and programs to maintain the integrity of these SDP sections. Small diameter piping lengths are relatively short. Consequently, it is impractical to use SDP length as a unit of likelihood and risk measure. Instead, the preferred methodology is to determine the total number of assemblies for each type of SDP. In support of this approach, an inventory of SDP sections throughout the system has been gathered. For illustrative purposes, an example of a small diameter section would be a pressure transmitter branch connection. The isolatable section that would be risk assessed would start from the surface of the main station piping connection and continue up to the transmitter. This paper presents the framework for likelihood and consequence assessment of SDP based on the system description above. This framework quantitatively estimates the risk of SDP failure and risk-ranks SDP sections in support of implementing and establishing a system wide Risk Based Inspection and Maintenance program for SDP.

This paper presents a study on how prototyping and ‘Design of Experiments’ principles can be applied in the early stages of product development. It is explored how four design parameters affect the perceived desirability of a physical alarm device, in development by a small start-up company. By utilizing recent advancements in the tools and platforms, available for the fabrication of prototypes, a range of physical prototypes are made. These prototypes are used to conduct 44 user tests and the results were used to establish a statistical model based on the Response Surface Methodology. The results of the model are outlined, highlighting the primary drivers of product desirability, as well as exemplifying the dynamics among the explored desirability parameters. The statistical model is tested through an experiment, which verifies the model’s ability to prescribe the perceived desirability for specific prototypes of the alarm device. The study hereby presents promising results for incorporating Design of Experiment principles in early stages of product development, and the authors encourage further studies to be conducted.

On November 1st 2008, a new ordinance came into force in Sweden. It extends the implementation of nuclear liability to all nuclear facilities and companies, regardless of size. The Government has authorized the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (SSM) to issue further regulation as warranted and appropriate, and commissioned the same Authority to oversee the implementation. Consequently, SSM is presently conducting research in order to establish a basis for the implementation of the ordinance to smaller facilities and enterprises. The goal is to enable finance to be assured in an efficient manner so that any burden on the companies is as small as possible. Thus, “functional requirements” are identified, and used as a basis for various investigations. The aspects include technical and cost calculation prerequisites, as well as various domains of law: the environmental code, radiation and nuclear safety, financial reporting, and criminal law. It is found that the basis for the differentiation among the facility operators and owners should be the cost and the associated uncertainty. Thus, a cost calculation will have to be carried out by all. It should be based on available standards and guidance documents. It is found that this is a requirement that already exists elsewhere in the legislation, and thus no additional burden is imposed on the companies. It is found that segregated funds is the preferred option for long-term liabilities. Securities are suitable for short-term liabilities provided that the economy of the company in question is sound. Securities might also be used for long-term liabilities to cover uncertainty. It is proposed that a de minimis limit of at least kSEK 25 (about k€ 2, 4 and k$ 3, 4) is used. An important reason for this is that lower limits might be incompatible with the rules for financial reporting. It is also proposed that securities might be used also for long-term commitments if the total environmental liability does not exceed 1,00 MSEK (about k€ 96 and k$ 135). It is found that the “general advice” that must be used by smaller companies lacks proper instructions on how to account for environmental liability whilst at the same time it prohibits the use of e g the international reporting standards IFRS/IAS. It is also found that the “general advice” prohibits distribution of costs for research and development over time. This might be incompatible with a fund system where considerable research may be necessary at the early stages of the work and often many years before the actual decommissioning is to take place. The rules in the penal code require that an annual report presents an “essentially correct financial situation”. One of the interpretations to this statement is that a deviance of at most 30% might be tolerated. Although previous work has indicated that the error in cost estimates need not be higher than about 15%, even for research facilities, concealed cost raisers may from time to time lead to much larger errors, even when best practices are being used. It is therefore essential that decommissioning planning and cost predictions are made in accordance with state of the art, and that the estimating methods as well as the results are properly documented.

The Japan Atomic Power Company has initiative in developing the DMS concept as a 400MWe-class light water reactor. The main features of the DMS relative to overcoming the scale demerit are the miniaturization and simplification of systems and equipment, integrated modulation of construction, standardization of equipment layouts and effective use of proven technology. The decrease in primary containment vessel (PCV) height is achieved by reducing the active fuel length of the DMS core, which is about two meters compared with 3.7 meters in the conventional BWR. The short active fuel length reduces the drop in core pressure, and overcomes the natural circulation system. And by using the lower steam velocity in the upper plenum in the reactor pressure vessel (RPV), we can adopt a free surface separation (FSS) system. The FSS eliminates the need for a separator and thus helps minimize the RPV and PCV sizes. In order to improve safety efficiency, developing an Emergency Core Cooling System (ECCS) for the DMS was considered. The ECCS configuration in the DMS was examined to achieve core coverage and economic efficiency from the following. 1: Eliminating high-pressure injection systems. 2: Adopting passive safety-related systems. 3: Optimizing distribution for the systems and power source for the ECCS. In this way the configuration of the ECCS for the DMS was established, providing the same level of safety as the ABWR and the passive systems. Based on the results of Loss of Coolant Accident (LOCA) analysis, core cover can be achieved by this configuration. Therefore, the plant concept was found to offer both economic efficiency and safety.

A preliminary study on the bioseperation of Carbon-14 was carried out using a mixed-culture of microorganisms obtained from the Pebble Bed Modular Reactor Company (PBMR). The culture demonstrated the ability to bioaccumulate radiocarbon-14 (C-14) from solution. The experiment consisting of a growth vessel and a biofilter connected in a closed loop. The biofilter was not installed for the purpose of treatment but rather as a method of isolation of microorganisms for further processing. Significant amounts of C-14 were detected in the trapped cells in the biofilter, significantly higher than in controls taken before adding carbon sources containing C-14. The microorganisms were grown under micro-aerobic conditions with graphite carbon and commercially purchased powdered carbon as the predominant supplied carbon sources. Small amounts of sucrose (500 mg/L) were added at 48 hour intervals to promote the growth of heterotrophic microorganisms. Additional work is required to determine the amount of C-14 escaping through gases produced as a product of metabolism (CO2 and CO) and the total carbon metabolized by the microorganisms in order to report with accuracy the degree of separation of C-14 from the C-14/C-12 mixture. A proof of concept study is underway to determine the C-14 mass balance, characterize the microorganisms in the reactor, and establish the presence or absence of processes that might have affected the preliminary observations.

In 1964 Kongsberg Våpenfabrikk AS decided to develop a small gas turbine for power generation, primarily for stand-by and emergency power. The engine was called the KG2 and had a unique all radial rotor design which was to become the trade mark for the later Kongsberg designs. The onset of the oil exploration in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea in the 1970’s gave the new business an opportunity to qualify for continuous drive applications and to expand into the international oil- and gas industry. In the following years a larger engine, the KG5, was launched and a third engine program was initiated, but never completed. The gas turbine know-how that was established in Kongsberg in these years was of great significance to the overall Norwegian gas turbine competence environment and was a deciding factor when Dresser-Rand first partnered with and later, in 1987, acquired the business. Under the new ownership the company became able to offer compressor- and power generation packages based on large aero-derivative gas turbines and it was soon recognized as a significant supplier, both nationally and internationally. The present paper provides a review of some of the unique design features of the KG series of engines as well as some of the typical applications. It also describes the transformation of the company from a small industrial gas turbine supplier to the recognized supplier of large, compressor- and power generation packages for the oil and gas industry.

Active learning refers to the mechanism of querying users to accomplish a classification task in machine learning or a conjoint analysis in econometrics with minimum cost. Classification and conjoint analysis have been introduced to design research to automate design feasibility checking and to construct marketing demand models, respectively. In this paper, we review active learning algorithms from computer and marketing science, and establish the mathematical commonality between the two approaches. We compare empirically the performance of active learning and static D-optimal design on simulated classification and conjoint analysis test problems with labelling noise. Results show that active learning outperforms D-optimal design when query size is large or noise is small.

Customer feedback has become an important policy instrument in the business company, and it is essential for the customer base and policy development. One of the evaluation methods of customer satisfaction and loyalty can be the reports that are created in the company's customer support center. Therefore, companies must maintain a high number of customers to be efficient and successful. Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is a linear programming based technique for measuring the relative efficiency of decision-making units (DMUs) where the presence of multiple inputs and outputs makes comparisons difficult. In this paper, the DEA method evaluates the efficiency rate of customer service in 29 call center companies. The study was conducted based on the obtained data for service performed through the telephone. DEA research is based on the data available for the period from September 2017 to April 2019. The main goal of this analysis is to determine which customer-suport call centers in the world are efficient and which are inefficient. Based on the results,, it was established that a small number of centers are efficient in the observed period. Furthermore, for inefficient centers, comparing those to efficient ones, the DEA method is giving us information why they are inefficient and could direct the future development policy.

Obtaining reliable estimates of aerodynamic roughness is necessary to interpret and accurately predict aeolian sediment transport dynamics. However, inherent uncertainties in field measurements and models of surface aerodynamic properties continue to undermine aeolian research, monitoring, and dust modeling. A new relation between aerodynamic shelter and land surface shadow has been established at the wind tunnel scale, enabling the potential for estimates of wind erosion and dust emission to be obtained across scales from albedo data. Here, we compare estimates of wind friction velocity (u*) derived from traditional methods (wind speed profiles) with those derived from the albedo model at two separate scales using bare soil patch (via net radiometers) and landscape (via MODIS 500 m) datasets. Results show that profile-derived estimates of u* are highly variable in anisotropic surface roughness due to changes in wind direction and fetch. Wind speed profiles poorly estimate soil surface (bed) wind friction velocities necessary for aeolian sediment transport research and modeling. Albedo-based estimates of u* at both scales have small variability because the estimate is integrated over a defined, fixed area and resolves the partition of wind momentum be-tween roughness elements and the soil surface. We demonstrate that the wind tunnel-based calibration of albedo for predicting wind friction velocities at the soil surface (us*) is applicable across scales. The albedo-based approach enables consistent and reliable drag partition correction across scales for model and field estimates of us* necessary for wind erosion and dust emission modeling.

The article examines the world and Ukrainian history of corporate periodicals. The main purpose of this study is to reproduce an objective global picture of the emergence and formation of corporate periodicals, taking into account the business and socio-economic context. Accordingly, its tasks are to compare the conditions and features of corporate media genesis in different countries, to determine the main factors of their development, as well as to clarify the transformations of the terminological apparatus. The research is based on mostly foreign secondary scientific works published from 1915 to the present time. The literature was studied using methods such as overview, historical, functional and thematic analysis, description, and generalization. A systematic approach was used to determine the role and place of each element in the system, as well as to comprehensively consider the object in the general historical context and within the current scientific discourse. The method of systematization made it possible to establish internal and external connections, patterns and contradictions in the development of the object of study. The main historical milestones on this path are identified, examples of the first successful corporate publications and their contribution to business development, public relations, and corporate communications are considered. It was found that corporate media emerged in the mid-nineteenth century spontaneously, on the wave of practical business needs in response to industrialization, company increase, staff growth, and consumer market development. Their appearance preceded the formation of the public relations industry and changed the structure of the information space. The scientific significance of this research is that the historical look at the evolution of corporate media provides an understanding of their place, influence, capabilities, and growing communicative role in the digital age.
