This study examines the causes and dynamics in the creation of business ventures by minority nascent entrepreneurs. Minority business enterprises are an important source of job creation and innovation in the US economy, as well as economic development engines in their respective communities. However, little is understood about the unique motivations, business strategies and plans in the early stage of their venture formation. This paper utilizes the Panel Study of Entrepreneurial Dynamics (PSED) dataset in investigating black and Hispanic entrepreneurial entry as compared to white nascent entrepreneurs around three important dimensions: motivation, business strategy, and community resources. It is found that blacks are highly driven by a range of motivational factors while Hispanics value intergenerational inheritance and role models in business ownership. Both groups heavily focus on a niche market strategy by lowering prices, serving markets missed by others and locating close to customers. Contrary to expectation, their perceptions of community resources are not more favorable than whites. Public policy implications are discussed.

This study reports entry correlates and motivations of older adults participating in organized exercise programs in the Netherlands, as determined in a descriptive explorative study (N= 2,350, response rate 86%). Participants were community-dwelling older adults (50+ years) who enrolled and started in 10 different exercise programs. Entry features were analyzed for differences in age, sex, marital status, education, living situation, body-mass index, lifestyle, and health status. Motivations for entering an exercise program were determined using homogeneity analyses. More Exercise for Seniors (MBvO) attracted relatively older seniors, whereas organized sports mainly attracted younger ones. Walking, MBvO, and gymnastics attracted more women, whereas skating and table tennis were reported to attract more male participants. Badminton and cycling attracted relatively higher educated participants, whereas MBvO attracted relatively lower educated participants. Three distinct motivational constructs were found: relax and enjoy, care and cure, and competition. Public health and recruitment implications of these findings are discussed.

With the remarkable degree of openness of China’s economy, an increasing number of foreign banks are rushing into this country. Two main theories prevail in current studies on the motivations of foreign banks to enter a new country, namely, customer-driven or market opportunity driven. Using the event study methodology, this paper analyses the value effect on foreign banks of the “entering the Chinese market” event. The results show that compared to customer-driven factors, the new opportunities of the Chinese market better explain this value effect. Our results provide a reference for foreign banks on operating strategies in China and enable a better understanding of the choice of destination and motivations for foreign banks to enter China.

The motivations for the internationalization of firms influence the selection of foreign entry modes. In this article we use John Dunning’s (1993) classification, which distinguishes four primary motives to invest overseas – market seeking, resource seeking, strategic asset seeking and efficiency seeking –, conceptually discussing the impact of the selected foreign entry modes. The methods and strategies of multinational corporations (MNCs) are chosen in a broader framework, where internationalization motivations converge with the exploitation, or exploration, of firm-specific advantages. Our analysis is supported by a set of theoretical propositions. The results demonstrate that MNCs must develop the best possible combination of strategy-structure for their international operations, and yet conceive a casuistic analysis of each individual operation. We have therefore contributed to a better understanding of the selection of foreign market entry modes as a reflection of strategic choices or motivations.

The decision to pursue medicine is a significant step for individuals, particularly those for whom this involves a career change. While medicine in the UK has traditionally been an undergraduate course, graduate-entry medicine (GEM) programmes were introduced in 2000 and offer an accelerated course for suitably qualified candidates with a Bachelor’s degree. Students have a variety of motivations for undertaking a GEM programme (Carter & Peile, 2007), and we herein explore the factors that influence this range of motivations.

ObjectivesEarly professionalism education for first-year students is important for generating sound knowledge and attitudes towards medical professionalism. Of the many factors affecting professionalism and professional identity formation in medical students, career choice motivation is an understudied one. This study aimed to explore the relationship between the career choice motivations of first-year medical students and their understanding of professionalism.Settings and participantsA cross-sectional survey of 940 first-year clinical medicine students was conducted at China Medical University in September 2017 to explore students’ motivation to study medicine and its relationship with students’ understanding of professionalism. Demographics, career choice motivation and professionalism were obtained through paper questionnaires. Logistic regression analysis was used to analyse the association between career choice motivation and understanding of professionalism while controlling for potential demographic confounders.ResultsThe most common career choice motivations for first-year medical students (N=843) were interested in the health sciences, income and social status and advocating altruism. The most mentioned subdimensions of professionalism were accountability, pursuit of excellence and compassion. There were significant differences in the understanding of professionalism among students with different career choice motivations.ConclusionFirst-year medical students with different motivations to study medicine also have different understandings of professionalism. Medical educators can explore motivations to learning medicine as a new entry point to providing professionalism education for newly enrolled medical students.

PurposeThis study examines what motivates firms to go and remain abroad despite uncertain profit potential. In a departure from probing traditional market-seeking, profit-driven motives, the authors explore how domestically driven, sociocultural motivations may shape the foreign market entry decisions of Korean commercial banks (KCBs). The authors argue that, due to the power imbalance between KCBs and their chaebol clients within the historical and cultural contexts of their relationships, KCBs' foreign market entries may depend more on their clients' presence in these markets than on their profit potential.Design/methodology/approachThe authors focus on the foreign market entries of KCBs and their client firms. Using the data of 8 KCBs and their client firms belonging to the 60 business groups (chaebols) of Korea, the authors analyze 6,577 observations involving the dyadic relationship between a KCB and its client firm in 15 host countries from 2005 to 2014.FindingsThe authors find that the number of clients' subsidiaries operating in foreign markets may increase the likelihood of KCBs entering these markets. Moreover, when KCBs earn more domestic profit from client firms, the potential Korean market in the host country is greater, and the institutional distance between the host country and Korea is smaller.Practical implicationsIn addition to the critical role of a bank-centered financing system in advancing a developing country and its firms, the authors’ findings suggest that firms should pay attention to the local diaspora and the institutional distance between the host and home countries in order to manage power-imbalanced relationships and make them sustainable.Originality/valueThe study contributes to the literature on foreign market entry by demonstrating how the home country's sociocultural factors may worsen the power imbalance, thereby pushing firms to make seemingly irrational decisions to go and stay abroad. That is, KCBs' foreign operations may be a way of seeking relational benefits with client firms, which would serve as a source of long-term domestic market profits. The authors’ findings thus highlight the need to consider how sociocultural factors may also shape firms' decision-making in their international business.

The necessity of sustainable transitions has become more and more acknowledged in recent years. From these changes, specific markets have recently been emerging which are closely tied to sustainable development. An industry which is particularly critical for enabling such transitions is the food industry where the current eating patterns have been linked to an array of issues with the considerable reliance on animal-based products often pointed out as a major concern. From a raising awareness and technological changes, a market has arisen which aims at supplying proteins from alternative sources to animal exploitation. By inquiring this specific market referred to as the Alternative Proteins (AP) market, the core objective of this thesis is to extend the knowledge regarding markets associated with sustainability. More specifically, recognizing the rapid-evolution of such markets, the inquiries are directed towards the entry mechanisms as it is seen as key dynamics influencing the evolution of such markets. An in-depth understanding of market entry regarding diverse dimensions including motivations, barriers and entry strategies could thus be achieved. Recognizing a shortcoming in the scientific understanding of stakeholder collaboration as an entry strategy, an emphasis on these collaborative entry strategies prevailed in our investigations. Eight firms having recently or longer ago entered the AP market have been interviewed to provide the empirical material for the thematic analysis. The theoretical framework was built around the resource-based view (RBV), supplemented by other theories including Creating Shared Value (CSV) and Porter’s classification of barriers which granted an enhanced theoretical lens to arrive at significant insights resulting from our inquiries. New entrants were thus found to have both financial and social/ environmental dimensions embedded in their entry motivations. It was also concluded that the adoption of collaboration as an entry strategy predominated across our sample which was explained by the assumption that markets linked to sustainable development have intrinsic circumstances forcing companies to collaborate to a larger degree. Moreover, the findings provided evidence of firms striving for a fit between the entry barriers and their entry strategies by devising the latter in accordance with their perception of barriers. Lastly, an essential contribution resided in the application of RBV in the context of market entry as this enabled the approach of market entry through a distinct angle broadening both the knowledge on market entry and RBV.

Bennett, Martin Edward. „A conceptual framework for international defence industrial alliances : motivations, advantages and business entry mode preferences“. Thesis, University of Liverpool, 2017. http://livrepository.liverpool.ac.uk/3009902/.

Der volle Inhalt der Quelle
Annotation:
Research into organisational alliances in the context-specific domain of the international defence market has to date been predominantly focused on multinational enterprises' (MNEs') motivations, competitive advantages and entry modes related to foreign direct investment decisions. This is a highly topical area as traditional markets continue to evolve rapidly due to macro environmental pressures such as decreasing defence budgets and increasing competition, thus propelling MNEs to seek business in new, emerging, markets. Emerging market organisations (EMOs) are however now demanding more value from their national defence procurement programmes, for example building the development of indigenous capability through the production of major complex programmes e.g. ships or aircraft, or the development of the local supply chain through second and third tier level supply. The pluralistic nature of the host market EMO and the changing trends in strategic collaborative decision-making, are highlighted in this research. This work adopts a rigorous practice based view of the analysis of data collected from a representative sample of professionals from within the defence sector across emerging and developed countries. Further, it extends theory by exploring the efficacy of the eclectic paradigm as a theoretical lens to further understand the implications of the diverse collection of motivations, advantages and entry mode preferences on both MNEs and EMOs in alliances. An action research methodology using an abductive, mixed method approach was used across two separate phases. Employing a multi-national, cross-sectional sample of stakeholders from across defence MNEs in UK and the USA, and EMOs in Colombia, Brazil and Turkey, my empirical model developed through this research, the Emergent Alliance Adaptation Framework, validates the importance of motivations and advantages in determining entry mode decisions within the dyadic. Highlighted during the interviews is evidence suggesting that a mutual desire for industrial level partnerships is moderated by environmental influences, such as politics and macro-economics, and further that market access and technology/capability are respectively value factors on MNE and EMO decision-making within alliances. These are of immediate, practical interest to those contemplating international industrial alliances and have proven of specific value to practice.

Healthcare administrators have regarded employee motivation and performance as significant factors because of the challenges with employee disengagement, which may decrease patient satisfaction and profitability for healthcare organizations. The number of available jobs within healthcare continues to increase at a high rate, while the total hires within the healthcare industry decreased from 2.9% in December 2014 to 2.7% in January 2015. Motivation in the workplace is a continuous concern for organizational leaders, more specifically for the health care industry. Based on Vroom's expectancy theory, the purpose of this single-case study was to explore the motivational strategies healthcare organizations' leaders could implement to improve the performance of entry-level medical service employees. Data collection consisted of direct observation and semistructured interviews of 4 leaders and 22 entry-level medical service employees at a health care organization in the Piedmont Region of North Carolina. Data analysis included the use of multiple sources of data collection, along with the use of member checking with interview transcripts, which allowed triangulation and verification of the themes derived from the interview data. The 2 main themes revealed were workplace motivation and organizational leadership, which affects employees' performance and organizational effectiveness. Business leaders in organizations may use the findings of this study to increase employee organizational commitment, which could improve the U.S. health care industry turnover rates. Social change implications include the importance of the need for leaders to develop effective motivational strategies for motivating employees.

Annotation:
This dissertation analyzes rewards and motivations of self-employment. In light of recent research contributions of Barton Hamilton (2000), which find entrepreneurship not as financially rewarding as wage work, my dissertation attempts to both verify and explain this claim. The first essay proposes a theoretical model of evolution of erroneous earnings expectations on part of a nascent entrepreneur. Inability to observe, survey, and take into account all of the returns to entrepreneurship prior to business entry creates a biased set of beliefs on part of the potential entrants. Using Bayesian learning, a nascent entrepreneur starting out with correct perception of profit distribution arrives at erroneous beliefs by incorporating limited information collected from existing businesses. An observed distribution of surviving businesses would exhibit higher earnings because of previous, unobserved, business failure entrepreneur get an overly positive view of her profit potential. Hence, the chapter offers a unique method of modeling overconfidence. The second essay undertakes dynamic empirical comparison of earnings received by business owners and their wage counterparts. Using Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP) I examine both short and long run returns to entrepreneurship comparing theses rewards to wage earners returns. I pay particular attention to transitions into and out of business ownership. I estimate entire earnings distribution. To characterize dynamic aspect of changes to individuals’ earnings I split the income distribution into five income quintiles and follow survey participants over the period of seven years. I find that period-to-period transitions to be Markovian. I find business tenure to be short, business ownership is costly in the short and rewarding in the long run. The third essay considered different reporting schemes applied to the self-employed. It is another empirical investigation of entrepreneurial earning uses Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID). I find entrepreneurs while reporting lower than wage workers earnings enjoy significant consumption premiums. I observe evidence of income underreporting by entrepreneurs. This finding suggests a need for better earning comparison metrics and proposes to use consumption rather than income metrics for future comparisons.

Data samlades in genom semistrukturerade intervjuer.
This study aimed to get insight in former inmates’ experiences, about their imprisonment and their re-entry into the free society. To answer the aim, the following questions were formulated; how does imprisonment affect the individual and how has the individual re-entered the society after imprisonment. The studies result was divided in two larger themes that concerned the time in prison and the time after. The selection for the study was six men that have been imprisoned in Sweden; they were between 25-60 years. Data was collected through semistructured interviews. The results show that imprisonment affect the individual in a negative way, both physical and psychological. The results also show that individuals inner motivation is very important when they re-entry the society and social support needs to be available to the former inmates in the right time.

The purpose of this research is to answer the following fundamental question: "Is the performance bonus approach a viable alternative methodology for implementing a Performance Management and Development intervention in South African companies? " The intention is to use the performance bonus as an entry vehicle for the establishment of a fully functional performance management and development system. The introduction of a performance based bonus system is intended to instill the recognition of "the pay for performance" concept as opposed to one of entitlement. What is expected is that a culture of performance will develop encompassing standards of work performance, goal orientation and a level of individual responsibility for recognition and reward. Understanding and acceptance of the performance bonus will create a platform for the introduction of further levels of remuneration, being increases and finally basic salary becoming performance based. Furthermore, this will allow the development of the further necessary levels of a fully functional integrated performance management and development system. This would entail the inclusion of management levels within the system as well as operational levels (departments, divisions and regions) and finally the organisational level thereby linking all aspects of the system to overall strategy.

Our reasoned sense of obligations to others can arise from at least three possible sources: cooperation, having caused harm, and effective power to improve suffering. The last source, this chapter argues, is particularly important in considering our obligations to future generations. It draws on a line of reasoning that takes us well beyond contractarian motivations to the idea of the “impartial spectator” as developed by Adam Smith. The interests of future generations come into the story because they are important in our attempt to be impartial spectators. The obligation of power contrasts with the mutual obligations for cooperation at the basic plane of motivational justification. In the context of climate concerns and intergenerational justice, this asymmetry-embracing approach seems to allow an easier entry for understanding our obligations.

The forces and factors driving regional migration have become more complex over time, and traditional explanations for the motivations, attraction, and selection of migrants are no longer sufficient in the study of migration to the Persian Gulf. Qatar, which in the last decade has emerged as one of the Middle East’s fastest-growing economies, provides a sound case study for discussing some of the emerging dynamics of regional labor migration. This chapter examines Arab-origin migration to Qatar, reviewing how the state has negotiated the entry and control of “alien” Arabs. The chapter examines the evolution and transformation of migration patterns to the Gulf Cooperation Council, and assesses policies adopted by the states to better manage their regional labor markets and control the flow of foreigners. Particular attention is given to scrutinizing how and why Qatar has become more selective and politicized in negotiating labor migration, and how this has impacted the Arab expatriate population.

The basic question to be addressed in this chapter is: what is the status of the notions ‘inheritance’ and ‘default inheritance’ in the theoretical framework of Construction Morphology (CM)? This framework, developed in Booij (2010), assumes a hierarchical lexicon with both abstract morphological schemas and stored complex words that instantiate these schemas. The lexicon of a language can be modelled in such a way that the abstract word formation schemas dominate their individual instantiations. Thus, the lexicon is partially conceived of as a hierarchical network in which lower nodes, the existing complex words, can be assumed to inherit information from dominating higher nodes. Advantages of a full-entry theory over an impoverished entry theory are outlined, and the chapter includes discussion of polysemy, allomorphy, and the class of items that fall between derivatives and compounds using ‘affixoids’.

This chapter investigates key motivations, drivers, and barriers for firms that are seeking to enter new international supply chains for renewable energy. Offshore wind (OW) is a born global industry with a fully internationalized supply chain from inception. The study adopts a mixed-methods approach by first doing 11 case studies of Norwegian industrial companies entering OW and secondly by conducting an online survey targeting the whole population of Norwegian firms in OW. The study finds that new green industries' distinctive features, managerial motivation, and industry relatedness shape a firm's entry strategies and behavior. Risk and uncertainty, complexity and turbulence, high transaction costs and disadvantages of scale postpone industry entry from established actors. The study finds that environmental motivation tops the list of motivations for managers to enter, but financial motivation is the strongest of perceived market performance. Finally, the study finds that market relatedness is more critical than technological relatedness.

This chapter focuses on craigslist's role as a secondary marketplace for used goods, meaning a market that operates outside of formal businesses and vendors. Drawing on interviews with users, the chapter describes motivations for using craigslist to buy and sell used goods. These reasons range from community building and limiting waste to economizing and entrepreneurialism. Interviews also revealed different ideas of value that emerge in secondary markets, meaning both the monetary value that has to be decided on when there is no vendor acting as a middleman, and the social value attached to pre-owned goods. The chapter then looks at the “mash-up catalogs” of craigslist, meaning the digital accounts dedicated to archiving craigslist exchanges. Using over one hundred accounts from Tumblr, YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook, the chapter analyzes these efforts to document craigslist as an entry point for theorizing the social lives of craigslist's things. The politics of buying and selling incorporate a range of economic, environmental, and social motivations, with negotiations of value that can alternately re-create and critique mainstream markets.

This chapter moves beyond firm level attributes and economic motivations to consider the impact of host country institutions on investment models of multinationals in developing countries. It adopts a comparative institutionalist perspective, and utilizes country and firm level variables to measure governance. These measures are then employed to predict innovation outcomes. This chapter demonstrates that host country institutions affect the likelihood of local innovation taking place, and its intensity. A variety of measures of institutional coherence are developed, and address such diverse concepts as intellectual property protection, corruption, democracy, and bureaucratic quality. In addition, firm surveys are used to convey firm perceptions of institutional quality in host countries. The chapter includes a discussion of the literature on firm entry modes, and considers how other host country attributes, such as education and human capital, may influence innovation outcomes alongside institutions.

Economic benefits of cloud adoption are the main drivers and motivations of making cloud as ubiquitous an IT paradigm as it is becoming. The authors believe cloud computing has the potential to transform a large part of the IT industry; this large transformation of IT has big impact on the economy of IT and the global economy. Public cloud computing can avoid capital expenditures because no hardware, software, or network devices need to be purchased. Cloud usage is billed on actual use only and is therefore treated more as an expense. In turn, usage-based billing lowers the barrier to entry because the upfront costs are minimal. In this chapter, the authors describe the business and economics aspects of cloud computing. They then discuss why cloud computing could be economically beneficial by enumerating its characteristics and giving a few examples. This chapter addresses when and how these economic benefits appear.

The link between foreign direct investment and economic growth has been widely studied. The studies have provided insights into how developing nations enable growth by adjusting policies to entice investors. Foreign investors entering emerging markets have to make strategic decisions on how to set up their operations. Investors look for markets and countries that would maximize their returns and position themselves as leaders in the industry. Hence, understanding entry requirements and economic policies are vital to understanding FDI. Keeping this in mind, this chapter analyses FDI in socialist nations and how their policies have evolved over time. The chapter will analyze the motivations and trends in FDI and how institutional conditions have enabled or impeded growth. The chapter studies China and Vietnam and compares their approach to FDI. The chapter uses Eclectic Theory posited by Dunning to understand changes in policies and how socialist nations are evolving to accept FDIs. The chapter concludes with a comparison section and presents scope for further research.

The University College Cork (UCC) Open Arboretum Project aims to re-imagine the original purpose of the University’s tree collection – as a teaching tool. The arboretum represents a unique on-campus learning space which has been under-utilised for teaching in recent times. The arboretum has the capacity to engage students, staff and visitors in a tangible way with important global issues (e.g. the climate emergency and biodiversity loss). It is also an opportunity to combat ‘plant blindness’, i.e. the ambivalence shown to plants in our environment compared to often charismatic animal species. Wandersee and Schussler (1999) coined the term “plant blindness” to describe the preference for animals rather than plants that they saw in their own biology students. Knapp (2019) has argued that, in fact, humans are less ‘plant blind’ and more ‘everything-but-vertebrates-blind’ with school curricula and television programming over-emphasising the role of vertebrates at the expense of other groups of organisms. Botanic gardens and arboreta have long been used for educational purposes. Sellman and Bogner (2012) have shown that learning about climate change in a botanic garden led to a significant shortterm and long-term knowledge gain for high-school students compared to students who learned in a classroom setting. There is also evidence that learning outside as part of a science curriculum results in higher levels of overall motivation in the students and a greater feeling of competency (Dettweiler et al., 2017). The trees in the UCC collection, like other urban trees also provide a range of benefits outside of the educational sphere. Large, mature trees, with well-developed crowns and large leaf surface area have the capacity to store more carbon than smaller trees. They provide shade as well as food and habitats for animal species as well providing ‘symbolic, religious and historic’ value in public common spaces. Such benefits have recently been summarised by Cavender and Donnolly (2019) and aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 11, Sustainable Cities and Communities by Turner-Skoff and Cavender (2019). A stakeholder survey has been conducted to evaluate how the tree collection is currently used and a tour of the most significant trees in the collection has been developed. The tour encourages participants to explore the benefits of plants through many lenses including recreation, medicine and commemoration. The open arboretum project brings learning beyond the classroom and acts as an entry point for learning in a variety of disciplines, not least plant science and environmental education generally.

Annotation:
Abstract Tandem bladed axial compressors prove to be a promising way of increasing the total pressure rise capability per stage with acceptable losses. The practical use of tandem bladed systems has been limited to IGVs and stators especially for highly loaded compressor stages used in gas turbine engine applications. Looking to the benefits of the tandem bladed compressor stage, more research activities are focused to explore possibilities of tandem bladed compressor rotor for core stages of a gas turbine engines these days. The main purpose of the stator is to remove the swirl from the flow coming out from the rotor and more often it is accompanied by flow diffusion using stator passage based on design criteria. The whole idea and motivation for a tandem bladed rotor are to provide a very high fluid deflection in order to achieve a higher total pressure rise. The extreme flow turning imparted by a tandem bladed rotor has to be handled by the stator with minimum losses. For an axial entry and axial exit compressor without IGVs, this results in high blade curvature for the stator. The present study investigates the design challenges of such stator for a tandem bladed rotor handling an average flow turning of 58.87° and diffusion factor (DF) of 0.66. The flow field at the tandem-rotor passage exit is highly three-dimensional in comparison to a conventional rotor. The tip leakage flow from both the rotor blades interacts with the shroud boundary layer resulting in intense mixing losses and flow blockage. Also, the highly loaded rotor blades shed two strong trailing edge wakes which merge to form a thicker wake at the rotor exit plane. This gets coupled with flow blockage associated with rotor tip clearance flow and shroud boundary layer. Together these two phenomena result in a highly three-dimensional velocity field fed to the stator leading edge. The flow blockage at the exit of the rotor passage especially near the tip region results in a region of momentum deficit fluid near the stator LE. This implies that stator needs to have high incidence tolerance to accommodate such an incoming flow. This required specific changes in the shape of the stator blade near the tip region to accommodate this momentum deficit flow. Interestingly the air exit angle from the aft blade is influenced by trailing edge wake from front blade changing the overall rotor exit angle. It is interesting to note that the conventional stator design strategies do not suffice for a tandem rotor-stator combination due to the aforementioned inherent three-dimensionalities. The air inlet angle for stator has to be recalculated from the average air exit angles from the fore and aft blade respectively along the span. The mesh generation for tandem rotor-single stator stage was done using ANSYS TurboGrid® and the simulations were performed using commercial package ANSYS CFX® 18.0. The current study demonstrates a more robust design approach for the stator incorporating controlled chord-wise flow turning along the span, resulting in a favorable flow passage shape variation along the span. The systematic design approach combined with modifications in profile shape and blade stacking results in a three-dimensional blade shape for stage design. The paper will explore more on the untouched approach and challenges for such future tandem bladed axial flow compressor stages.
