English poetry is a treasure house of the English national thoughts, a poet expressing his feelings and thoughts about nature, society and life, and an important means for English learners to know English culture. English poetry, as a common style, has its own stylistic features, such as paying attention to the beauty of rhyme and rhythm. The appreciation and study of English poetry is usually carried out from the perspective of aesthetics or literature. Of course, some literary theorists also emphasize the pragmatic purposes of poetry, such as enlightenment, pleasure, imitation, self-expression, etc. In view of the textual features and pragmatic effects of poetry, this paper will analyze the pragmatic effects and appreciation of the English poem "Dwelling in the woods on a snowy night" from the perspective of deixis in pragmatics.

The influence of British literature on global literature is enormous. In so many ways, British literature has influenced world literature. The Anglo-Saxon period established the British literature tradition, which continues to influence world literature today. In this blog post, we will look at various aspects of British literature's influence on global literature. The study of literary works from the United Kingdom and other countries around the world is known as British and world literature. It includes classic and contemporary works, often translated into English, that reflect regional and historical cultural and social norms. Individuals who study British and world literature gain insights into the historical, social, and cultural contexts in which the works were written. This allows for a better understanding of human experiences and the appreciation of different points of view. British literature composition is the process of creating written works in the English language that originate in or are related to the United Kingdom. This includes works written by British authors throughout history in the genres of fiction, poetry, drama, and nonfiction. Different literary movements, such as Medieval, Renaissance, Romanticism, and Postmodernism, have shaped the evolution of British literature composition. The composition of British literature has had a significant impact on the literary world and continues to inspire many contemporary writers.

In Asian literature, Malaysia is categorized as the minority for its literature. Its development in literary realm has just built for some decades. It is not like the other big countries, such as China, Japan, and many other Southeast Asia which have been famous for its literature in world. Having no difference with other literature, Malay literature is developed through translation. Since English is still the main language in world literature, Malay literature has to consider its literature to be translated in English too. Meanwhile, modern Malay literature has presented already the novels in form of English language verse. Many novelists have tendency to write directly in English rather than presenting their works in vernacular language (Malay language). Translation, specifically in English, does not play important role in Malay literature. Malay English novels can assist the circulation of Malay Literature around the world, yet it may also reduce the appreciation for Malay language itself. This paper aims to discuss Malay literature dilemma in using English as the vernacular language in novels or using English as the bridge for bringing Malay culture into World Literature.

Background: This article examined intervention studies that used appreciation of visual arts to foster observation skills and discussed their effectiveness in making accurate diagnoses in terms of expertization. Methods: In order to collect journal articles and academic books (written in English) on empirical intervention studies that examined the use of visual arts for cultivating observation skills in health professionals’ education and training, the author first targeted articles that had been included in previous systematic reviews. In addition, they conducted a manual search. From this body of literature, the author selected studies that objectively measured observation skills only through the appreciation of visual art. They collected and read around 300 articles and selected 12 studies after applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: This article revealed no concrete evidence on whether appreciating visual art contributes toward an accurate diagnosis. Extant studies determined that such appreciation facilitates the observation of more visual features and a detailed view over time. However, they did not confirm the positive effects of appreciating visual arts on an accurate diagnosis. This article also confirmed that such appreciation does not reduce misdiagnoses or develop tolerance toward ambiguity that prevents premature closure. Moreover, the transfer of observation skills from one context to another is unlikely to be as successful as the intervention studies had intended. Conclusions: For fostering diagnostic skills, providing students with many instances of medical cases and appropriate knowledge to evoke implicit learning for extracting subtle differences in the cases, should be prioritized over visual art appreciation. On the other hand, such appreciation may foster verbalization skills and understanding or extraction of the patient’s background and context. These competencies may cultivate teamwork and perspective-taking, indirectly leading to an accurate diagnosis.

Among all the literary pieces used in English language teaching, poetry has always been regarded as an interesting and challenging literature genre used in English language teaching. Researchers that explored the appreciation of poetry and the factors that affect its approach had different points of view; however, they certainly agreed on the universal concern of research on the difficulty and lack of enthusiasm in dealing with poetry. Accordingly, recent neuroscientific research commenced using poetry in paraphrasing since both complement one another in language teaching. As a literary product, poetry requires a high analysis skill for adequate comprehension, while paraphrasing involves extensively analyzing ideas and forming new borrowed personal interpretation. Hence, this study aimed to see the relationship between students' degree of poetry appreciation and paraphrasing skills.

At the tertiary level, English literature, as a theoretical subject, is an obligatory course in most English departments teaching students majoring in English due to the inextricable link between literature and language. The incorporation of literature into teaching language becomes intriguing when English adopts its role as a lingua franca (ELF), a means of communication among people of different mother tongues and cultural backgrounds. The study aims at exploring the perceptions of six Vietnamese teachers of English literature from five major universities in Hochiminh City by using unstructured interview, which focuses on two main aspects namely, (1) their perception of ELF, i.e. awareness as well as evaluation of its status in Vietnam, and (2) its influence on their teaching philosophy and practice in English Literature courses. Results show that despite their appreciation of ELF, English is considered a foreign language (EFL) rather than a lingua franca in the Vietnamese context. However, a number of concepts associated with ELF, which the participants value influence their teaching in terms of material selection, and class activities but not assessment where the native speaker norms concerning language use are respected.

This study focuses on the development of an algorithm aimed at assisting English learners in comprehending foreign literature through the utilization of machine translation technology. With the growing importance of multilingual proficiency in a globalized world, the ability to read and understand literature in foreign languages is increasingly valued. However, language barriers often hinder learners' comprehension and appreciation of such texts. To address this challenge, our research endeavors to construct an algorithm that leverages machine translation techniques to facilitate the reading process for English learners. By integrating advanced translation algorithms and natural language processing methods, the proposed system aims to provide accurate and contextually relevant translations of foreign literature into English. Additionally, the algorithm will incorporate features tailored to the needs of English learners, such as vocabulary assistance, grammatical explanations, and cultural context annotations, to enhance their reading experience and comprehension levels. Through rigorous experimentation and evaluation, the effectiveness and usability of the algorithm will be assessed, with the ultimate goal of empowering English learners to engage more deeply with foreign literature and broaden their linguistic and cultural horizons.

Abstract Literature on body image and health behaviors has largely been pathology-based, investigating body dissatisfaction and disordered eating. Body appreciation is a useful construct of positive body image and has been used to understand its relationship with health behaviors beyond eating. This scoping review explores the literature on the relationship between body appreciation and physical health-promoting behaviors and health-compromising behaviors. A comprehensive search of databases was conducted to gather correlational studies written in English between January 2005 and November 2019. Behaviors related to eating and exercise were excluded. Nine quantitative studies met inclusion criteria. Evidence suggests an overall positive relationship between body appreciation and health-promoting behaviors, including preventive sexual health behaviors, preventive cancer behaviors, and seeking medical attention. Alternatively, body appreciation is negatively associated with health-compromising behaviors including risky sexual activity and alcohol and tobacco use. Promoting positive body image, above and beyond the reduction of body dissatisfaction, may play a crucial role in the health and well-being of women and girls. Research that examines positive body image in groups that are racially diverse and include sexual and gender minorities and people without healthcare access is urgently needed.

Social institutions such as marriage have been around for a long time and have proven to be the most strong in linking people together in various ways, such as husband and wife, mother and daughter, sister and brother, and so on. Weddings have been used to unite kingdoms in the past. When a woman is considered to be at home, it shows how closely tied domestic life is to one's identity as a "woman." The topic of marriage and the consequences of marital discord are brilliantly represented in the works under discussion. A Married Woman, Difficult Daughters, and Custody are just a few of Kapur's works that explore the complexities and ramifications of marital strife. It is projected to promote literacy through implied and embedded values, particularly in regard to critical racial literacy through Asian American literature. This case study involves a lecturer and students in a Literary Appreciation course in an English department. The data were collected through observations and interviews. The implemented stages of the Synectics teaching model are: Describing the topic, Describing personal analogies, Identifying compressed conflicts, and Re-examining the original topic. Due to the time constraint, only one stage—Creating a new direct analogy—was elicited. The results suggest that the reading strategies i.e., shared reading aloud and visualization, enhanced students’ understanding of the story and elicit powerful emotions about the literary work. The findings of the study also imply that Gordon's Synectics model aids in raising students' awareness of racism and other associated social issues by allowing them to put themselves in the shoes of persons from various racial origins. His creative writing are doubtless saturated with the element of ethics which is inalienably related to his view of life. A large number of critical studies are available on Mulk Raj Anand, the Titan of Indian English literature and pioneer of Indian English novel. But much remains to be done to bring out exhaustive and composite work on this subject. The present study is a sincere endeavor to undertake a comprehensive evaluation of ‘Ethics without God’ in his novels. It also aims at presenting an organic character of his fiction and proper appreciation of Anand’s genius.

Based on the perspective of multimodal teaching theory, this study analyzes the establishment of English and American literature appreciation standard course in universities and discusses the necessity of course offering, multimodal teaching implementation, and multi-evaluation of the course, to provide ideas for English literary teaching reform and talent training in universities. In terms of the training of professional talents, to improve their critical thinking and humanistic quality, a British and American literature course in English major study holds a significant place as a mandatory course for English majors. Basic abilities such as an awareness of Western literature and culture are developed into the ability to appreciate and evaluate literary works. This study, based on the premise of standardizing spatial data and sharing data, argues that the traditional data sharing model has flaws and that a sharing mechanism based on metadata management is required. It also proposes a metadata management strategy that can be used as a model for addressing the problem of heterogeneous storage in data sharing.

The article considers the contribution of the famous Canadian playwright of Ukrainian descent George Ryga into English-Canadian theatre. The most important feature of Ryga’s style is a special attention to the life, feelings, struggles of downtrodden (marginalized, oppressed, neglected, abused) people in a Canadian society (whether they are Indians, Ukrainians, Italians, or other nation or nationality) with a humane and dignified face under unbearable conditions of physical, moral, existential survival. Psychological nuances are presented by George Ryga vividly, persuasively and convincingly. George Ryga is one of the pillars of building a strong and nationally-oriented EnglishCanadian theatre and drama. Ryga Studies have to pick up their tempo here in Canada (where exists substantial literature on his creative heritage and its peculiarities), and especially in Ukraine (where Ryga, unfortunately and undeservedly, remains basically unknown and unresearched, in spite of some positive steps towards appreciation and recognition of its diverse literary heritage for Ukraine).

Objective The cochlear implant (CI) improves quality of life for people who are severely and profoundly deafened, allowing implantees to perceive speech at levels similar to those of individuals with normal hearing. However, patients with CIs generally report a reduced appreciation of music after implantation. We aimed to systematically review the English-language literature for studies evaluating music enjoyment and perception among adult patients with CIs. Data Sources A systematic review of PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Embase, and the Cochrane Library. Review Methods The PRISMA statement was utilized to identify English-language studies reporting music appreciation among adults with CIs. Two independent reviewers performed searches through May 2017. Included studies investigated parameters related to music enjoyment and music perception, including (1) pitch and timbre perception, (2) noise-canceling algorithms, and (3) the presence of dissonant chords, lyrics, or visual cues. Results A total of 508 articles were screened for relevance. Forty-one full-text articles were evaluated, and 18 met final inclusion criteria. Studies used heterogeneous methods of outcome measurement for identifying music appreciation. The outcome measures suggest that rhythm and lyrics are important components of enjoyment. Patients with CIs had difficulty with pitch and timbre perception. Conclusion The heterogeneous outcome measures identified in this systematic review suggest that rhythm and lyrics are important components of enjoyment, while patients with CIs had difficulty with pitch and timbre perception. Because there is no standardized reporting metric for music appreciation among adult patients with CIs, a standardized validated outcome-measuring tool is warranted.

This bibliometric study examines publication trends, influential works, authorship networks, conceptual themes, and future directions in knowledge management research within the banking sector over the past three decades. Data were collected from a total of 443 scholarly publications written in English and indexed in Scopus. The data collection period spanned from 1994 to 2023. Quantitative bibliometric analysis techniques were employed, which involved the use of temporal visualization to examine publication and citation patterns, mapping co-authorship networks, and clustering high-frequency keywords. The results suggest a consistent rise in research interest and output as time progresses. Influential publications have proposed various models and frameworks for knowledge management, risk analysis, and organizational change. The majority of prolific authors were primarily of European descent, and it is worth noting that the Journal of Knowledge Management held the position as the most influential publication venue. The core research focus encompassed various areas such as knowledge for competitive advantage, intellectual capital measurement, knowledge-performance links, customer relationship management, and knowledge management technologies. The research has evolved to encompass digital transformation, sustainability, automation, and analytics. Proposed future directions include an examination of the role of knowledge management in ensuring continuity during crises, the facilitation of risk management through knowledge systems, and the development of decision support based on knowledge. This study offers valuable insights into the development of knowledge management research in the banking sector, although it is limited to English sources in Scopus. Acknowledgment Expressing gratitude towards those who have contributed to the successful completion of a study has significant importance. In particular, it is crucial to extend appreciation to the individuals affiliated with the Ho Chi Minh University of Banking for their valuable support and assistance during the research endeavor.

Abstract Literary stylistics, whose subject matter is literary language, straddles the disciplines of literary criticism and linguistics, as Henry Widdowson pointed out 45 years ago. Since then, developments in discourse analysis and multimodal studies have had the potential to expand the map of the interactions between different disciplines. This case study performs a traditional stylistic analysis of the poem ‘From Far, from Eve and Morning’ from A E Housman’s A Shropshire Lad but also demonstrates the potential for a multimodal perspective on stylistics by relating it to a musical analysis of Vaughan-Williams’ setting of the poem. It begins with a linguistic analysis of phonology, graphology and punctuation, lexis, phrase structure, clause structure and clausal semantics. It proceeds to a discourse analysis of pragmatics and discourse structure. And it ends by relating the linguistic and discoursal analysis to the music through music criticism. By way of conclusion, it suggests that both linguistic analysis and appreciation of musical structure and mood are useful ways into Spitzer’s philological circle, by which linguistic analysis and musical appreciation can pave the way for literary appreciation.

It has a bearing on both the writing of the learners and making them more thoughtful, critical, and analytical. The literary language is beneficial to both vocabulary growth and sentence structure and expression at the macro and micro levels of writing. Prosaic discourse makes learners argumentative, while poetry inspires their imagination. While they may be doing it consciously or unconsciously, the words used are rhythmic and flowery, as well as with alliteration. However, when it comes to academic writing, dramatic discourse introduces deviations and introduces dramatic devices, and when it comes to storytelling, fictional discourse introduces techniques. This research has found that these genres lead to an appreciation of literary language. It makes learners better writers. This is purely qualitative research, where data has been collected using the observation method in the classroom. As a participant, the researcher has also played the role of the observer. Abstract This paper focuses on the situation of undergraduates from a conservative Muslim society (Kuwait), who opt to major in English Language and Literature. Informal observations are reported that indicate that this might present a disturbing predicament since it requires of such students an appreciation of values and traditions which are contrary to those upheld in their religion and practised in their society. Since, it is argued, this could have an inhibiting effect on mastery of their subject, particularly on the language front, a detailed questionnaire was administered to a group of students from the Department of English Language and Literature, Kuwait University, to ascertain the extent of the problem. Responses showed a high degree of religiosity among the students and considerable unease regarding some of the material they had to read, in spite of a fairly exacting standard of censorship already applied by the teaching staff. The nature of what disturbs them is gone into in some de-tail as are the ways that students reportedly cope with this problem. Since distancing seems a very common strategy used to maintain psychological equilibrium, this would seem to have adverse effects on the most commonly stated aim of these students which was to perfect their language and it is suggested that the concept of the English degree in such an environment may need to be re-thought. Finally, the question is raised of what kind of individual places himself in such a conflict situation and remains there. A personality test showed that the students taking part in the study scored highly on certain personality variables which suggests that these students may be unconsciously self-selected from a certain personality type and this, in turn, may explain how they are able to operate both within their field of study and their socio-religious traditions.

This study utilized a basic qualitative design under a qualitative research approach. There were six (6) English teachers as participants. The participants answered open-ended questions about language and literature programs in one's school in the new normal of education through social media platforms, Facebook messenger. The data has yielded three (3) themes: learning competencies and guides of language and literature programs, approaches and programs to language acquisition and literature appreciation, and new learning methods towards language and literature programs. Hence, the language programs sharpen students' macro abilities, which they will use in real-life situations. Literature programs also seek to help students understand and appreciate literary appreciation and analysis. The utilization of diverse techniques, programs, and competencies will allow for more practical learning. It is essential to the teacher's job that we motivate students to master these abilities. Through the data analysis of an authoritative reading test officially organized by the university, the author found that a large proportion of students in sophomore year failed to perform well in the test and did not demonstrate excellent reading skills. The reasons are as follows: firstly, the "teacher-led role" is neglected in reading teaching; Secondly, students ignore discourse analysis in reading; thirdly, the students' understanding of vocabulary is limited to the meaning of completely equivalent Chinese; Fourth: Grammatical awareness is not strong. The author finds out the problems that students have in reading, and combines relevant cases to conduct in-depth discussions on these issues.

Students in this urban setting developed deeper understandings of literary issues such as characterization and theme while working through dramatic activity and movie-making processes. Responses to literature became deeper and more nuanced as students brought elements of the text to life through dramatic video. This article studies the socio-cultural differences, analogies and consequences of the forced renunciation of the deceased husband’s fortune of two wealthy widows, because a codicile in testament hinders a second marriage. Ghani Khan is labelled as a mad philosopher due to his unconventional writing style, perception of nature, and exotic expression of love. This study was motivated by the gains of integrating children’s literature in the Malaysian KSSR (Kurikulum Bersepadu Sekolah Rendah/Integrated Syllabus for Primary Schools) English syllabus. The present study looked into primary students’ perceptions with regard to the usage of the Big Book as well as their comprehension level in terms of the plot development, setting, moral values and characters. Its respondents were 150 Year Four students from three primary schools in one of the rural districts in the Northern region of Malaysia. Its three main research instruments were namely a Big Book, a questionnaire as well as worksheets on plot development work, settings, moral values and main characters. The study revealed that 98.74% of the respondents had overwhelmingly conceded the value of the big book in supporting their comprehension of the story. All respondents had affirmed that they were heavily attracted by the illustrations as well as the colors used in the big book. All of the respondents could effectively grasp the exposition/beginning stage of the plot structure while 93 (62%) respondents had decent conception of the settings of the story. 113 (75%) respondents had sound understanding of the moral values described in the story. About 123 (82%) respondents could competently recognize the main characters. The results of the study had evidently reinforced the significant role of Big Books in enriching ESL learners’ literary appreciation as well as reading comprehension.
