Objective of Protocol: The primary objective of this protocol is to record the process of conceptualizing a semi-structured interview protocol, training enumerators on the protocol, collecting data, translating findings into English, and analyzing data in English and Bengali, in a study of family socialization among a stateless and conflict-affected population, Rohingya refugees, in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. Research Questions of Study: (1) What are the socialization goals that mothers have for their children, and how do they perceive these goals in relation to their future or current roles as caregivers? (2) What are parents’ experiences with their children’s participation in Humanitarian Play Labs (education/child care provisions in the camps), and what are their perceptions of how their child’s participation in the programs has influenced their child/family? (3) What were the experiences of parents with their children as they migrated from Myanmar to Bangladesh? Design of Study: The design of the study involved a qualitative grounded theory approach based on an analysis of the participants’ responses to a semi-structured interview protocol. Study population: Participants included a purposive sample of 28 mother/father dyads in the Rohingya camps in Cox’s Bazar.

Mat, språk och kultur är tätt sammanlänkade, och i matlagningsprogram förekommer en rad olika sorters kulturspecifika referenser. Kulturspecifika referenser definieras som ”any reference to a cultural entity which, due to its distance from the target culture, is characterized by a sufficient degree of opacity for the target reader to constitute a problem” (Mailhac i Ranzato 2015:54) och kan vara sådant t.ex. som måttenheter (pint), märken (Tabasco) och maträtter (surf and turf).
Food, language and culture are closely linked and cooking shows are peppered with culturally specific references. Culturally specific references are defined as “any reference to a cultural entity which, due to its distance from the target culture, is characterized by a sufficient degree of opacity for the target reader to constitute a problem” (Mailhac in Ranzato 2015:54) and can be things such as measurements (pints), brands (Tabasco), and dishes (surf and turf) to name a few. This study focuses on the translation of culture specific references in cooking shows. Since most of the cooking shows translated into Swedish are in English, the material for this study consists of 21 cooking shows in English and their Swedish translations. This study will look at the shows 3 good things, Save with Jamie, David Rocco’s Dolce Vita, Kitchen Hero and The Great British Bake off. By constructing a corpus and analyzing the culturally specific references, the norms regarding translation strategies for the translation of culturally specific references in cooking shows have been mapped out, and compared to the results of a well known study on primetime TV by Pedersen (2011). These were categorized in accordance with Pedersen’s taxonomy (2011:76). The results showed that the norms were very similar to those of primetime TV, with the exception of some domain-specific norms. Language influences how we see the world. Thus, the way culturally specific references are translated from one culture into another is important because it affects how cultures are viewed and interpreted, at least within the food community.

Abstract The Partition of 1947 was an unexpected event that ruptured the older social relations and spaces of Malda, and resulted in many Muslim Gambhira performers to leave English Bazar (now in India) for Chapai Nawabganj (in Pakistan). The most important among them was Muhammad Sufi, alias Sufi Master, who created a new Gambhira in East Pakistan, substituting Shiva and the peasants with the grandfather-grandson (nana-nati) pair. This chapter delves into the context and meanings of Sufi’s new Gambhira in East Pakistan. Drawing an analytical distinction between ‘territory’ and ‘space’, it explores how the cultural space of Gambhira crossed the territorial border between the two new nation-states. It then examines how the nana-nati form of Gambhira came to emerge as a new national tradition after the birth of Bangladesh in 1971, patronised by the new Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

In early 1937, George sails with Harper’s Bazaar editor Carmel Snow for work in Paris. George adapts to Snow’s demanding style but socializes with old friends like Eardley Knollys and Jacques Guérin. George photographs the “weird giantess,” English poet Edith Sitwell. He crosses to London for additional assignments. Returned to New York City, George has four portraits in MOMA’s massive historical survey “Photography: 1839–1937,” including a striking new Cocteau portrait. GPL is prominently featured in an innovative arts and fashion magazine, Bachelor, discreetly targeting cosmopolitan homosexuals. Via Lincoln Kirstein, George befriends three notable “realist” painters, Paul Cadmus, his lover Jared French, and Jared’s wife Margaret Hoenig. Forming the photography collective PaJaMa, the trio document male friends on the summer beaches of the Northeast in ritualistic poses. Kirstein will marry Paul’s sister Fidelma, while the PaJaMa threesome, visitors to Stone-blossom, frequently sketch portraits of George, Monroe, and Glenway, members of the so-called Homintern.

Abstract Women were at the forefront of the gradual shift of middle-class values from prudent economy to guarded extravagance. But the stores played a large and hardly benign role in this process. In the closing decades of the century, as the department store emerged from the dry-goods bazaar, the experience of shopping changed considerably. Deploring what she called the “Napoleonic cam paign against the middle-class pocket-book,” English visitor Kath erine Busbey charged that, beyond the profusion of consumer goods, the interior of the American department store furthered the campaign. The “amazing luxury” of decor, the important openings and promotions, the special holiday and seasonal attrac tions, the profuse displays of out-of-season flowers, the colorful caged live birds, the splashing electric fountains, and even the free samples of food provided an “unnatural tantalization” as they lent the stores a perennial air of festival and excitement. “What chance has … the call of thrift and a commonplace little home against such allurement?” Busbey wondered.

Chapter 4 traces the logic American missionaries employed in advocating Sunday schools as a suitable answer to their problem of finding audiences for their message. Bazaar-preaching did not produce many converts. Missionaries tried to expand the notion of itinerant preaching: rather than merely present Christianity as a personal path to a secure afterlife, they attempted holding out prospects for a better standard of living for all in this world if they accepted Christianity. The responses usually were those of admiration for the material facts they presented about “Christian countries,” but accompanied by an assertive rejection of any notion of Christian causality. The recalcitrance of their ill-educated adult interlocutors frustrated missionaries and their attention thence turned to children. However, thanks to the availability of government grants-in-aid after 1854, there was increased competition in education from non-Christian groups wanting to set up government-approved secular schools. It was in this context that missionaries felt that Sunday schools, being independent of government funds, could teach Christian doctrine without fear of interference. Further, they expected thousands of non-Christians, eager for any education in English, to attend Sunday Schools, disregarding the evangelical intent of the schools’ sponsors. The India Sunday School Union was formed in 1876 following extensive pan-denominational missionary discussions on the need for a formal organization patterned after “modern” Western bureaucracies, educational systems, armies, and so forth. The chapter details the methods, including the use of advertising, small bribes, and favor-seeking with influential, Christian-minded colonial officials, by which missionaries assembled students. The chapter ends with a statistical review of Sunday school attendance in the last two decades of the nineteenth century.
