The dynamic test-bed is a powerful tool for the powertrain integration and control strategy development of a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV). This paper focuses on developing a test-bed controller with driver simulation, road load simulation (RLS), and engine simulation. The main factors that influence the RLS accuracy are analyzed, especially inertia of test-bed and torque signal sampling frequency, and the RLS algorithm with penalty function based on a forward model is proposed. The engine model is developed and permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) is adopted to realize engine start-up/stop, torque control, and inertia simulation. The simulation platform was built in MATLAB/Simulink to verify its accuracy. The simulation results present the developed RLS with a penalty function based on a forward model that can reduce the speed and torque error. The developed controller is applied to the single-axis parallel HEV test-bed. The experiment results show that the developed test-bed controller can precisely emulate the road load and improve the efficiency of the development of HEV powertrain.

Modern diesel engine systems rely more and more on electronic control systems. The benefits of such electronic control systems include reduced fuel consumption, limited emissions and enhanced performance. Following the trend, this article aims to derive an appropriate methodology for improving the performance of the speed regulation by upgrading an existing mechanical governing control system to an electronic one for the marine diesel engine. Hardware-in-loop simulations and the diesel engine test-bed experiments are applied to realize a V-type mode study of the speed control strategies for the marine medium-speed diesel engines. First, the algorithm of the strategies and the functions of the electronic control unit are verified through hardware-in-loop test bench which is established using hardware devices and a software tool chain from ETAS GmbH. Additionally, the specific parameters are modified and calibrated finely on the test bed with an online debugging system. Finally, to demonstrate the performances and the generality of the proposed control strategies, the test-bed results of the two types of marine diesel engines are illustrated. The experimental results indicate that a better performance is achieved by replacing the original controller with the proposed controller. And the methodology of the control strategies development is proven to be efficient.

A study has been conducted to analyze the vibration behavior of one of AVLs light-duty engine test beds, used to develop and test new combustion engine concepts. It has previously been observed that the test bed exerts large vibrations as the engine speed approaches 3000 rpm. As the test bed is mainly used for testing spark-ignited combustion engine concepts, it is desired to conduct measurements at engine speeds up to 6000 rpm. Therefore the purpose of the study is to find a new design for the test bed which reduces the speed-related vibrations and allow the engine to run at speeds up to 6000 rpm. In addition, the study has sought to find an appropriate method of measuring the engine torque in a more precise way than previous measurement methods. The test bed components such as the engine, driveshaft, flywheel, couplings and the electric motor have been analyzed to determine the influence the mentioned components have on the vibration modes of the test bed. A theoretical model of the test bed components as a system was built in MATLAB, the model was then used to find the optimal dimensions of each component in order to reduce the vibrations. The accuracy of the model was verified using measured engine data; In addition, the vibration modes of the test bed were measured using an accelerometer mounted on the electric motor. The measured data was processed using PULSE. A CAD model of a new test bed concept was created using Autodesk Inventor. The vibration modes of the new test bed were verified using ANSYS. The study concludes that the components generally need to have a higher stiffness as well as a lower moment of inertia in order to reduce the risk of critical resonances being generated at speeds below 6000 rpm. In particular, the inertia of the engine flywheel and the couplings for the driveshaft should be reduced by 50% and 57 % respectively. Furthermore, the counterweight mass of the engine crankshaft should be reduced to 1.32 kg for the balance degree of the engine to lower than 36%, in order to reduce lateral inertial forces in the engine. However, the study concludes that lowering the inertia of these components will cause the fluctuations in speed to increase from the current average value of  2 rpm to  4 rpm. Finally, the study concludes that a digital torque sensor should be used to achieve the desired measurement accuracy.

This chapter explores combinations of text and imagery in histories produced in England between 1066 and 1272. It focuses on case studies of the Worcester chronicle, and the works of Henry of Huntingdon, Gerald of Wales, Ralph Diceto, and Matthew Paris. Through an examination of page design and the content and location of imagery, it argues that decoration could be used to attract and engage readers, and to add nuance to text. Imagery was used to draw attention to elements of the narrative, prompt a reader to connect chronologically distant events, and impose interpretative frameworks onto the past. This chapter argues that the imagery in many of these histories was intended to help a reader connect the past and present, but that this, together with the complexity of such page designs, often led to images being omitted when text was subsequently copied.

Opponents of Kant suppose he thinks that autonomy gives rational beings a special kind of intrinsic value. Since knowledge of intrinsic values would have to be a kind of metaphysical knowledge, this interpretation is contrary to Kant’s strictures on the limits of knowledge. Rather, Kant thinks that only rational beings can engage in reciprocal lawmaking, which is the source of moral laws. Animals cannot obligate us in the sense of participating in making laws for us. This, however, ignores a second sense in which we can have duties to animals: the laws we make for the treatment of people might also cover the treatment of animals. The chapter ends by explaining why it is hard to get this kind of conclusion using the universalization test.

The incidence of asthma in children varies among countries and can be estimated to range between 5% and 20%. Exercise-induced asthma (EIA) is common in patients with asthma but can also occur in some children without asthma. Typical symptoms of EIA include cough, chest tightness, and shortness of breath shortly after exercise. The pathophysiology of EIA is not completely understood, but it has been shown that airway cooling and drying with increased ventilation during exercise and airway re-warming after exercise play a pivotal role. In addition, a lack of physical activity may also contribute to EIA. Regular exercise may increase fitness and psychological well-being but may also positively influence airway inflammation in children with asthma. The diagnosis of EIA is based on the typical history and may be verified by an exercise challenge test. Every child with EIA should be able to engage in all type of physical activities.

This chapter examines how features of electronic communication (text messaging, Facebook, and Twitter) make it an ideal environment for peer influence, and how positive and negative peer reinforcement via electronic communication relates to the development and perpetuation of antisocial behavior. Electronic modes of communication allow youth to be in contact with their peer group instantaneously and continuously. The continuous access provided by electronic forms of communication may intensify the role of positive and negative reinforcement processes. Electronic communication extends youths’ ability to engage in the aversive behaviors that characterize peer coercion. This immediacy also permits less aversive, positive reinforcement processes—such as laughter and encouragement—to continue even when peers are not physically together. The role of text message communication in peer coercion and deviancy training is examined, and illustrative examples are presented. The challenges associated with measuring and observing children’s involvement with an ever-changing virtual landscape are also discussed.

Without assuming prior legal knowledge, books in the Directions series introduce and guide readers through key points of law and legal debate. Questions, diagrams and exercises help readers to engage fully with each subject and check their understanding as they progress. This book explains the key topics covered on equity and trusts courses. The content of the text is designed to emphasise the relationship between equity, trusts, property, contract and restitution to enable students to map out conceptual connections between related legal ideas. There is also a focus on modern cases in the commercial sphere to reflect the constantly changing and socially significant role of trusts and equity. The book starts by introducing equity and trusts. It then includes a chapter on understanding trusts, and moves on to consider capacity and formality requirements, certainty requirements and the constitution of trusts. Various types of trusts are then examined such as purpose, charitable, and variation trusts. The book then describes issues related to trusteeship. Breach of trust is explained, as is informal trusts of land. There is a chapter on tracing, and then the book concludes by looking at equitable liability of strangers to trust and equitable doctrines and remedies. This new edition includes coverage of significant recent cases, including the Supreme Court decision on interest to be paid by tax authorities on monies owed; the Supreme Court decision on the test of dishonesty applicable to civil matters; the Privy Council decision on the division of investment property acquired by cohabitants; the Court of Appeal decisions on Quistclose trusts; fiduciary duties in arms-length contracts; transactions prejudicing creditors; beneficiary anonymity in variation of trust cases; exemption clauses; discretion exercised beyond trustee’s authority; implications of GDPR for trustee disclosures; trustee personal liability; causation and equitable compensation; statutory relief for a professional trustee’s breach of trust; use of proprietary estoppel to reward work undertaken in farming families; costs of seeking court’s directions; injunctions ordered against persons unknown; equitable jurisdiction to rectify agreements.

Two scientists and a philosopher aim to show how science both enriches and is enriched by Christian faith. The text is written around four themes: 1. God is a being to be known, not a hypothesis to be tested; 2. We set a high bar on what constitutes good argument; 3. Uncertainty is OK; 4. We are allowed to open up the window that the natural world offers us. This is not a work of apologetics. Rather, the text takes an overview of various themes and gives reactions and responses, intended to place science correctly as a valued component of the life of faith. The difference between philosophical analysis and theological reflection is expounded. Questions of human identity are addressed from philosophy, computer science, quantum physics, evolutionary biology and theological reflection. Contemporary physics reveals the subtle and open nature of physical existence, and offers lessons in how to learn and how to live with incomplete knowledge. The nature and role of miracles is considered. The ‘argument from design’ is critiqued, especially arguments from fine-tuning. Logical derivation from impersonal facts is not an appropriate route to a relationship of mutual trust. Mainstream evolutionary biology is assessed to be a valuable component of our understanding, but no exploratory process can itself fully account for the nature of what is discovered. To engage deeply in science is to seek truth and to seek a better future; it is also an activity of appreciation, as one may appreciate a work of art.

Commissioned by the English East India Company to write about contemporary nineteenth-century Delhi, Mirza Sangin Beg walked around the city to capture its highly fascinating urban and suburban extravaganza. Laced with epigraphy and fascinating anecdotes, the city as ‘lived experience’ has an overwhelming presence in his work, Sair-ul Manazil. Sair-ul Manazil dominates the historiography of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century compositions on Delhi in Persian and Urdu, and remains unparalleled in its architecture and detailed content. It deals with the habitations of people, bazars, professions and professionals, places of worship and revelry, and issues of contestation. Over fifty typologies of structures and several institutions that find resonance in the Persian and Ottoman Empires can also be gleaned from Sair-ul Manazil. Interestingly, Beg made no attempt to ‘monumentalize’ buildings; instead, he explored them as spaces reflective of the sociocultural milieu of the times. Delhi in Transition is the first comprehensive English translation of Beg’s work, which was originally published in Persian. It is the only translation to compare the four known versions of Sair-ul Manazil, including the original manuscript located in Berlin, which is being consulted for the first time. It has an exhaustive introduction and extensive notes, along with the use of varied styles in the book to indicate the multiple sources of the text, contextualize Beg’s work for the reader and engage him with the debate concerning the different variants of this unique and eclectic work.

This chapter considers William Forsythe, an artist whose intellectual choreographies form a unique—and uniquely successful—part of Germany's dance culture. First, it takes a closer look at the relation between bodies and the law that regulates our status as citizens and as political bodies. The piece Human Writes is emblematic of what choreography does with bodies that engage with the letter of the law, a missed encounter that produces dance. Second, it takes Human Writes as exemplary of Forsythe's methodologies to create impossible choreographies that challenge the dancers and necessitate decisions on their part. This will, third, lead toward a definition of choreography. Choreography appears to be a machine-like structure of relational differences, an inhuman symbolic language that, together with the bodies' manifold possibilities of movement, produces a choreographic text. Choreography is confronted with and simultaneously confronts the body, thereby putting it in a state of dancing. By simultaneously including and excluding the body, choreography creates imaginary bodies, possibilities of bodies that both the dancers and the audiences can then explore.

AbstractThe valve train plays a major role in the performance of internal combustion engines by controlling the combustion process and it is therefore one of the key aspects for increasing the efficiency of combustion engines. Considering the dynamics, the spring force must be high enough to reliably close the valve preventing from seating bouncing due to surge modes after the valve closure. On the other side, the spring force should be kept as low as possible in order to reduce the engine friction losses and consequently the fuel consumption. In the high-performance engines, the valve springs have to be designed and optimized for sustaining higher stresses with compact dimensions leading to critical material and manufacturing processes. This requires a reduction of moving masses and a strong focus on design and process optimization of the coil springs for reducing the mechanical load and the friction losses at low engine speed. At the same time, valve train should be reliable at high engine speed. The calculation of stresses and contact forces for moving parts under dynamic load is essential for durability analysis. A method to calculate the contact of moving masses is described and proposed to justify valve motions experimental results. To fully understand the failure mechanism of test bed reliability trials, the dynamic stresses have been calculated modeling the real springs’ shape. The contact forces have been reproduced considering the coil clash effects and the dynamic behavior of the flexible spring.

In this chapter, we investigate this problem through WebGuard, our automatic machine-learning-based pornographic Web site classification and filtering system. Facing the Internet more and more visual and multimedia as exemplified by pornographic Web sites, we focus here our attention on the use of skin color-related visual content-based analysis along with textual and structural content based analysis for improving pornographic Web site filtering. While the most commercial filtering products on the marketplace are mainly based on textual content-based analysis such as indicative keywords detection or manually collected black list checking, the originality of our work resides on the addition of structural and visual content-based analysis to the classical textual content-based analysis along with several major-data mining techniques for learning and classifying. Experimented on a test bed of 400 Web sites including 200 adult sites and 200 nonpornographic ones, WebGuard, our Web filtering engine scored a 96.1% classification accuracy rate when only textual and structural content based analysis are used, and 97.4% classification accuracy rate when skin color-related visual content-based analysis is driven in addition. Further experiments on a black list of 12,311 adult Web sites manually collected and classified by the French Ministry of Education showed that WebGuard scored 87.82% classification accuracy rate when using only textual and structural content-based analysis, and 95.62% classification accuracy rate when the visual content-based analysis is driven in addition. The basic framework of WebGuard can apply to other categorization problems of Web sites which combine, as most of them do today, textual and visual content.

Power Grid, Water/Sewage control system, and Industrial automation are some examples of critical infrastructures. They are critical because malfunctioning of any of these may lead to severe industrial accidents. It may also have severe implications for the national economy and security. Nation-states are gearing up for potential cyber warfare, signs of which are already visible in various incidents such as Stuxnet, BlackEnergy, and many other recent attacks. As a result, research in cyber defense for such critical systems is an urgent need for all countries. IIT Kanpur has established the National Interdisciplinary Center for Cyber Security and Cyber Defense of Critical Infrastructures (C3i Center) to engage in research in this crucial area. In the past, the authors carried out a lot of cybersecurity experiments on co-Simulator-based platforms. These experiments show that they do not allow us to penetrate at the granularity required to defend real systems and therefore, physical test-beds are to be constructed. In this chapter, the authors describe how to build various test-beds.

The objective of this chapter is to identify the risk factors and preponderant causes of falls in the hospital elderly inpatients. A survey on the search engines B-on, EBSCO, and Pubmed, followed by an analysis of the title and abstract is done. Afterwards, the authors analyze all the articles with full text available in Portuguese, Spanish, and English. The most common risk factor for falls in the analyzed articles was being aged above 65 years old. More than half of the articles also mentioned intrinsic factors such as mental disorder, mobility disorder, and use of medication. As for extrinsic factors associated with risk of falls, most of the articles mentioned the characteristics of bed/chair and the obstacles associated with the physical/environmental infrastructures. The prevention strategies for this phenomenon must consider each country and care unit specifically as well as the specific characteristics of its patients, aiming to promote the care quality.

This chapter examines the conditions that encourage corporations to engage in proactive peacebuilding. It explains variation in firm-led peacebuilding as a product of the operating environment. These environmental variations offer insights into how corporations respond to local dynamics and shifts in political capacity, as well as threats to the ability to conduct business. The chapter also considers the alternative explanation that firms use peacebuilding to overcome past bad behavior. It tests these arguments on the original cross-national data of peacebuilding efforts. The findings bring large-N empirical analysis to a topic dominated by case studies and emphasize the need for peace science scholars to examine the role of the private sector in many of the topics we study.

This chapter combines theoretical reflection and disciplinary history to consider the impact of critical discourse inspired by Continental philosophy on the evolution of close reading, against the backdrop of modernist studies’ own fluctuating relationship with high theory. Can one blame French theory for a reluctance to engage with the minute stylistic details of a text? The chapter argues that the renewal of modernist studies was brought about by the combination of two factors: a wish to take into account contemporary theory, and a wish to historicize the corpus systematically. As the chapter reveals, the perceived clash between myopic close reading that postpones asking broad questions and the ample sweep of philosophical investigations had already taken place within canonical French theory. The chapter examines the historical and conceptual implications of theory’s relation to close reading for modernist studies today.

The objective of this paper is to simulate road loads experienced by an automobile during an urban driving cycle on an engine test bed. This is to be achieved through the use of a combined eddy-current dynamometer and flywheel arrangement, to load the IC engine on the test bed, and an automatic throttle control system, which will vary engine power under changing load conditions to obtain the desired speed-time variation. This paper is intended to provide a system which will permit engine testing under realistically simulated urban driving conditions; it seeks to avoid the use of chassis dynamometers for this purpose. The test is conducted on the IC engine/dynamometer set-up, which consists of the Maruti Omni’s 3-cylinder, 796cc, 37bhp (@5000 rpm) petrol engine with drive train coupled with an eddy current dynamometer. The paper consists of the following stages: 1. A driving cycle is defined, corresponding to urban driving conditions and tractive resistances are calculated and provided in the form of a resisting torque applied by the dynamometer on the IC engine, controlled by a microcontroller. 2. Inertial loads are calculated and applied on the IC engine via both the dynamometer and a flywheel, which is attached to the dynamometer mounted on a separately fabricated assembly. 3. Throttle control is achieved using a stepper motor, which is used to modify the existing manual throttle control setup. The stepper motor is operated using a micro controller. An interfacing circuit has been fabricated to allow this and program written is used to control the stepper motor and provide desired throttle positions through the driving cycle. 4. Torque control in the dynamometer is to be achieved by using the ‘external mode’ available on the control panel of the dynamometer. This allows communication of values from a micro controller via a parallel port, digital-analog converter, and driver circuit, in the form of voltages signals, allowing torque control to be achieved.

The AGT 100 is an advanced gas turbine designed for passenger car application. The most significant of its advanced features is the use of structural ceramic components for the hot section of the engine’s flow path. The engine was expressly designed for ceramic components; previously, ceramic materials were simply substituted for metal components. Early experimental builds of the AGT 100 contained many ceramic components and metal substitutes for the more complex ceramic components that were not yet fabricated. Engine testing has continued to accumulate operating time on the ceramic components that have always been engine-worthy (combustor, regenerator, vanes, rings and spacers, piston ring). Recent engine tests have included both a ceramic turbine rotor and static structure (scroll, vanes, backplates, coupling). Each type and shape of ceramic component has now been engine tested. Development is continuing to improve them even further.

Annotation:
Accurate combustion analysis at the test bed is an important tool for the development engineer. It can help engine design, efficiency improvements or emissions reduction by providing instantaneous feedback on the combustion process. It can also provide detailed combustion information to help speed-up the engine calibration process. By implementing shared memory communication, multiple core capability and streamlined calculation techniques, the calculation time of AVL gas exchange and combustion analysis software GCA (Gas Exchange and Combustion Analysis) has been dramatically reduced without significantly decreasing calculation results accuracy. This allows AVL IndiCOM (in combination with AVL GCA) to perform accurate gas exchange and combustion analysis calculations directly and promptly at the test bed. This opens the door to a number of promising new applications by erasing the bridge between measurement data acquisition and post-processing analysis. Increase of measurement data consistency and the reduction of development time are two of the most important benefits of being able to perform “on-line” plausibility checks of measurement data. The strong links connecting AVL GCA calculation results to the measurement data and the redundancy between calculation and measurement for the assessment of some highly relevant engine parameters (e.g. IMEP, air mass flow) can greatly extend the “on-line” plausibility checks functions already available in AVL IndiCom or AVL test bed automation software PUMA. Some passenger car application examples, where valve train flexibility is used to enhance fuel economy or reduce exhaust emissions of internal combustion engines, show that the immediate availability at the test bed of gas exchange related parameters (e.g. internal EGR rate, scavenged mass, mass flows through the valves) supports an intuitive optimization of the valve train parameters.

Staff at the University of Defence in Brno, Czech Republic, designed and constructed a test cell for small gas turbine engines as detailed in GT2012-69419. Once construction was completed, the test cell was instrumented and put through a series of tests to confirm the design suitability, calibrate data acquisition channels, establish correction parameters for measurement values, and examine real operating conditions. This paper details the methodology of those tests with a focus on used equipment, noise emissions, air and gas flow and the associated impact on engine thrust. Lastly, measurement results are presented and compared with the design predictions.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to compare the incidence of post-operative nausea and vomiting (PONV) in opioid-utilizing and opioid-free general anesthesia. Background PONV is an extremely common, potentially dangerous side effect of general anesthesia. PONV is caused by a collection of anesthetic and surgical interventions. Current practice to prevent PONV is to use 1-2 antiemetics during surgery, identify high risk patients and utilize tracheal intubation over laryngeal airways when indicated. Current research suggests minimizing the use of volatile anesthetics and opioids can reduce the incidence of PONV, but this does not reflect current practice. Methods In this scoping review, the MeSH search terms used to collect data were “anesthesia”, “postoperative nausea and vomiting”, “morbidity”, “retrospective studies”, “anesthesia, general”, “analgesics, opioid”, “pain postoperative”, “pain management” and “anesthesia, intravenous”. The Discovery Search engine, AccessMedicine and UpToDate were the search engines used to research this data. Filters were applied to these searches to ensure all the literature was peer-reviewed, full-text and preferably from academic journals. Results Opioid free anesthesia was found to decrease PONV by 69%. PONV incidence was overwhelming decreased with opioid free anesthesia in every study that was reviewed. Implications The future direction of opioid-free anesthesia and PONV prevention are broad topics to discuss, due to the nature of anesthesia. Administration of TIVA, esmolol and ketamine, as well as the decision to withhold opioids, are solely up to the anesthesia provider’s discretion. Increasing research and education in the importance of opioid-free anesthesia to decrease the incidence of PONV will be necessary to ensure anesthesia providers choose this protocol in their practice.

The Army is tasked with managing the cultural resources on its lands. For installations that contain large numbers of historic farmsteads, meeting these requirements through traditional archaeological approaches entails large investments of personnel, time and organization capital. Through two previous projects, Engineer Research and Development Center, Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (ERDC-CERL) cultural resource management personnel developed a methodology for efficiently identifying the best examples of historic farmstead sites, and also those sites that are least likely to be deemed eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. This report details testing the applicability of the methodology to regions across the country. Regional historic contexts were created to assist in the determination of “typical” farmsteads. The Farmstead/Ranch Eligibility Evaluation Form created by ERDC-CERL researchers was revised to reflect the broader geographic scope and the inclusion of ranches as a property type. The form was then used to test 29 sites at five military installations. The results of the fieldwork show this approach is applicable nationwide, and it can be used to quickly identify basic information about historic farmstead sites that can expedite determinations of eligibility to the National Register.

Muqtedar Khan’s Islam and Good Governance: A Political Philosophy of Ihsan is, above all, an expression of faith.[1] This does not mean that we should engage it as a confessional text — although it certainly is one at some level — or that it necessitates or assumes a particular faith positionality on the part of its reader. Rather, Khan seeks here to build a vision and conception of Islamic governance that does not depend on compliance with or fidelity to some outward standard — whether that be European political liberalism or madhhabi requirements. Instead, he draws on concepts, values, and virtues commonly associated with Islam’s more inward dimensions to propose a strikingly original political philosophy: one that makes worldly that which has traditionally been kept apart from the world. More specifically, Khan locates the basis of a new kind of Islamic politics within the Qur’anic and Prophetic injunction of ihsan, which implies beautification, excellence, or perfection — conventionally understood as primarily spiritual in nature. However, this is not a politics that concerns itself with domination (the pursuit, retention, and maximization of power); it is neither narrowly focused on building governmental structures that supposedly correspond with divine diktat nor understood as contestation or competition. This is, as the book’s subtitle suggests, a pathway to a philosophy of the political which defines the latter in terms of searching for the Good.
