The present paper develops a real-time clutch transition strategy for a parallel hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) in order to achieve quick and smooth clutch transition engagements between pure electrical driving and hybrid driving. Model predictive control (MPC) has been used for this model and tested with different control horizons and weighting factors to verify the ability of MPC to control the vehicle speeds for the clutch engagement. Some modified MPC algorithms with softened constraints and with output regions have been also studied to improve the robustness and the ability of this controller. Comprehensive simulations for the HEV have been conducted in MATLAB and Simulink. Results show that the system can provide real-time optimal control actions subject to input and output constraints for real-time clutch transition engagement with high driving comfort. The system can be implemented in electronic control units and applied for real HEVs.

ABSTRACTBackground: Social engagement and depression are important outcomes for residents with dementia in long-term care. However, it is still largely unclear which differences in social engagement and depression exist in residents of various long-term care settings and how these differences may be explained. This study investigated the relationship between social engagement and depressive symptoms in long-term care dementia units, and studied whether differences in social engagement and depressive symptoms between units can be ascribed to the composition of the resident population or to differences in type of care setting. Methods: Thirty-seven long-term care units for residents with dementia in nursing- and residential homes in the Netherlands participated in the study. Social engagement and depressive symptoms were measured for 502 residents with the Minimum Data Set of the Resident Assessment Instrument. Results were analyzed using multilevel analysis. Results: Residents of psychogeriatric units in nursing homes experienced low social engagement. Depressive symptoms were most often found in residents of psychogeriatric units in residential homes. Multilevel analyses showed that social engagement and depressive symptoms correlated moderately on the level of the units. This correlation disappeared when the characteristics of residents were taken into account. Conclusions: Social engagement and depressive symptoms are influenced not only by individual characteristics but also by the type of care setting in which residents live. However, in this study social engagement and depressive symptoms were not strongly related to each other, implying that separate interventions are needed to improve both outcomes.

Aims and methodTo build on previous research findings by examining engagement and problematic behaviours of patients in 10 residential rehabilitation units. Two measures were completed on patients in community rehabilitation, longer-term complex care and high-dependency units (109 patients in total). Data were analysed and categorised into higher-engagement ratings across the domains of engagement and behaviour over the past 6 months and lifetime in terms of presence of the behaviour and likelihood of resulting harm.ResultsData were available for 73% of patients. All aspects of engagement were consistently low for all units, with highest levels in community rehabilitation units. Levels of problematic behaviours were similar across all units. Socially inappropriate behaviours and failure to complete everyday activities were evident for over half of all patients and higher for lifetime prevalence. Verbal aggression was at significantly lower levels in community units. Lifetime behaviours likely to lead to harm were much more evident in high-dependency units.Clinical implicationsDespite some benefits of this type of care, patients continue to present challenges in engagement and problematic behaviours that require new approaches and a change in focus.

This research explores the activities of volunteers who work with people who are terminally ill and dynig in Switzerland. My research seeks to understand the dynamics of the contemporary relation to death, focusing more specifically on the following two research questions : a)how do the volunteers cope with the constant presence of death in their everyday lives ? b) how does death come to be presented as an « attractive » outcome in palliative care contexts ?

Farhat, Mounir.

In France, since early 2000s spreads a literature inviting professionals in contact with people suffering from Alzheimer disease to "personalize" the way they take care of them. This term refers to a humanization that seems to fade away in this particular context. What is asked to medical and paramedical staff, is a true and authentic commitment toward these patients. What is aimed, is a control of emotions and the way they are expressed. This Ph.D explores the way in which "personalization" is practically accomplished in the context of Alzheimer’s Special Care Units. Based on interviews and observations, it shows the banality of "commitment", and also the complexity of it’s execution. From the ethics of care perspective, an invisible work makes life possible for every protagonist living in that kind of environment. This cleverness of the situation drives away the danger of reification, and prevents burnout.Far from the chimerical "professional distance", this field work shows an articulation between commitment and detachment (Elias, 1956). Emotions appears to be a necessity in order to carry out the tasks, but also a danger that requires to be put away. Thus, Alzheimer’s units are characterized by the relative importance of autonomous regulation, in comparison with control regulation (Reynaud, 2004) : formalization process struggle due to the elusive and local nature of the ethics of care

Sarwar, Shagufta. „Investigating employee engagement in SMEs in United Arab Emirates“. Thesis, Swansea University, 2014. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.644533.

Der volle Inhalt der Quelle
Annotation:
This thesis is focused on gaining a deeper understanding of the phenomena of employees' engagement at work, along with, exploring its antecedents and consequences within the confines of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the United Arab Emirates. Employee engagement has garnered lots of interest in the last two decades in both the academic and the practitioner communities particularly, with respect to large corporations. However, research in small- and medium-sized firms has somewhat lagged behind. Given that the practical interest in employee engagement at work has outstripped the available academic evidence, the current work seeks to answer the fundamental questions like how can engagement be increased and how and why it benefits individuals and organisations. Hence, a three-component model of employee engagement was proposed whose academic significance stems from two facts. First, engagement as a construct was studied through the theoretical lens of the social exchange theory which is underpinned by the concept of the reciprocity norm that governs the interactions at the workplace. The less formal structure of SMEs enabled the understanding of a bidirectional transaction and its implications on the phenomenon of engagement. Second, given the paradigm shift in the UAE's economy from a fuel-based model to a service-based model made it worthy to examine what was happening in 90% of the registered businesses. According to the Department of Economic Development, SMEs account for 92% of the economic contribution in the non-oil sector and employs up to 86% of the workforce in the UAE. Although the concept of employee engagement has grown in popularity, it has undergone significant development in terms of definition, measurement and conceptualisation while the research in the academic community has lagged behind. Having an in-depth review of the existing engagement literature from psychology, human resources, organisational behaviour and management fields, the author recognised that there was a need for not only theory verification (to test the predetermined factors in a new context) but also theory generation (uncovering of any additional factors) with respect to the concept of engagement. Based on this, a mixed methodology approach was adopted for the purpose of this study. Both survey design and detailed one-to-one interviews were utilised to investigate the relationships among antecedents and consequences of employee engagement in the SME setting. In particular, this study provided a theory-based empirical evidence regarding whether the relation with the employer, the relation with colleagues, the provision of performance feedback and good conditions in workplace affect employee engagement. Furthermore, the study also investigated how employee engagement directly and indirectly leads to better job performance, lower intention to leave, increase organisational commitment and reduction in employee cynical behaviour. The sample size comprised of 341 surveys (SME employees) and 56 interviews with employees and owners/managers respectively.

Tobari, Eime. „Does 'civic engagement' work? : civic engagement of older people and their 'embeddedness' in a society in the United Kingdom“. Thesis, University of Greenwich, 2011. http://gala.gre.ac.uk/7141/.

Annotation:
This study investigates how UK policies and initiatives promoting civic engagement of older people impact their ‘embeddedness.’ ‘Embeddedness,’ which has been my research theme continuously for the past ten years, describes intricate dynamic relationships between an individual and his/her physical and socio-cultural environments. The four research objectives were: 1) to define the concept of civic engagement in relation to ‘embeddedness’; 2) to review and analyse UK policies and initiatives promoting civic engagement of older people; 3) to analyse older people’s perceptions and experiences of civic engagement in civic engagement practices; 4) to examine the effectiveness of UK civic engagement initiatives on older people’s perceptions and experiences of civic engagement and their 'embeddedness’ by discussing differences and overlaps between the concept, policies and initiatives and perceptions and experiences of civic engagement. I also discuss how this study links Sociology and Architecture around the theme of the ‘embeddedness.’ By means of literature reviews, semi-structured informant interviews and participant observation, the subject is tackled both theoretically and empirically. The study analyses the reality of civic engagement focusing on the London Borough of Greenwich as a case study using ‘civic engagement’ as a multi-dimensional and multi-layered concept involving civil, political, social and cultural rights and responsibilities. The study suggests key values for civic engagement and ‘embeddedness’ and discusses them to speculate on the future of civic engagement and the ‘embeddedness’ of older people. The study argues that although in reality classic bureaucratic tendencies may undermine an organisation’s own policies promoting civic engagement, as happened in Greenwich, this is not inevitable if all the parties can understand the dynamic and transactional interaction mechanisms as and when individuals build up social networks within and beyond such organisations.

AbstractAfter being signed by a state, international human rights treaties must be formally ratified and then implemented. What happens before and during the ratification may influence the future uses of—and engagements with—human rights treaties and different mechanisms are employed to try to spur engagement and implementation. Through case studies of the Istanbul Convention and the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, we demonstrate, first, how a government may try to shape the preferences of its subnational units through the pre-ratification procedure. Second, we show how federal, inter-cantonal and cantonal actors employ or develop ‘domestic implementation mechanisms’ to orient the engagement of subnational units. While these mechanisms sometimes stem from the federal or inter-cantonal level, they can also arise from actions taken at the subnational level, unfolding in a bottom-up process.

Through the participation of local communities in the preservation of mangrove forest ecosystems, an attempt is being made to prevent further damage to the mangrove environment and recover from any damage already caused. The mangrove forests along the shore of Kampung Laut, most notably those located in the Ujung Alang Village, are kept in pristine form because of the numerous and varied types of mangrove plantation activities that are carried out there. The local people are currently utilizing mangrove plants as a source of food (certain parts of the plant) and building materials (the stems). On the other hand, its use as a natural dye source is not yet common enough to be considered a significant industry. So, the mangrove forest ecosystem can be protected through the Sustainable Utilization of Mangrove Forests for the Production of Natural Dyes with a Zero Waste System, which includes: (1) the preparation and completion of a natural dye production unit based on the right technology for Kampung Laut village; (2) the preparation and completion of the production unit to produce charcoal briquettes and liquid smoke from mangrove waste as a new and innovative use for mangrove waste; and (3) the preparation and completion of the production unit to produce naturally.

This article reports on a statistical investigation into the engagement rates of male secondary-school students with school counsellors in co-educational state secondary schools in Aotearoa New Zealand. The data analysis evidences a discrepancy between the engagement rates of male and female students, substantiating what has been known anecdotally: that male students are less likely than their female peers to meet with school counsellors. Data from 2615 counselling records across eight schools nationwide indicate that male students engage between 3% and 11% less than their female peers. Further research in 2022 is planned to investigate any barriers or constraints that could account for this discrepancy and expose possible facilitative factors that may increase male student engagement rates with school counsellors.

Annotation:
Police work is a complex type of profession in which special police units have the duty to perform the most complex, difficult and risky security tasks. In order to successfully solve security problems, it is very important that the members of these units constantly maintain high level of combat readiness and training. The basic condition for good organization, efficient training and action of the special units is to place each member in the place where, according to his psycho-physical abilities and characteristics, they can contribute the most to the performance of their duties. Taking into consideration the nature of the tasks and their specificity, human resource management is a very complex process because the senior staff should show an enviable level of knowledge and readiness for an appropriate selection. To help this commitment and in order to rationalize the procedure for proper structuring of quality and efficient formations, the labor of 80 members of the Rapid Deployment Unit was tested, i.e. their motor, morphological and psychological characteristics, in order to form a database and to determine criteria for psychophysical engagement of human potential. Based on the conducted statistical analyzes and procedures, it was concluded that in general, the tested empirical model for psychophysical engagement of human potentials in the unit meets the minimum quality criteria, but still, in order to meet the specific safety requirements, it is necessary that the psychophysical capabilities and characteristics of members are at least one level higher on the grading scale. Keywords: police profession, special police units, human potential, psychological characteristics, statistical analyzes and procedures

Lin, Hui-Nien. „Keynote Talk: Community Empowerment in Indigenous Resettlement Communities of Southern Taiwan After Typhoon Morakot“. In 3rd International Conference on Community Engagement and Education for Sustainable Development. AIJR Publisher, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.21467/proceedings.151.k4.

Annotation:
Typhoon Morakot produced more than 2000 mm of rainfall in two days during August 2009, causing catastrophic damage to parts of southern Taiwan. In the aftermath, 673 people died; 26 went missing; and 1,766 houses were destroyed. To facilitate recovery and reconstruction after the typhoon, the state approved a Special Act of Reconstruction for delimiting specific disaster regions and imposing forced relocation of villagers. A total of 3,096 households, mostly indigenous groups, were relocated to 35 permanent housing units from mountains to lowlands. Without any farmlands, villagers struggled to maintain their livelihoods. In 2020, indigenous villagers protested against the county government for its intention to demolish illegal structures, built by villagers as tourism-related businesses. This advocacy was supported and followed by several university faculty members and NGOs through numerous actions, including organizing protests, filing petitions, and conducting workshops to advocate indigenous human rights. In addition, through university-community collaborations, several “soft actions” were emerged, such as building genealogy and curating settlement history and pictures in local museums, for more community involvement and empowerment. Above all, these advocacy and community actions reflected Sustainable Developments Goals (SDGs) in “climate actions” and “reduced inequalities.” Moreover, through reflections of these actions, community post-disaster resilience may be more about resistance than adaptation. In the future, university scholars and students will continue to work with indigenous communities for advocating indigenous human rights in the era of climate change.

The paper deals with the optimal dispatching of Public Enterprise EPS production units for different scenarios of integrated RES capacities in the power system of Serbia for the current and future circumstances in 2030. To solve this complex optimization problem, we applied an approach that decomposes the power generation scheduling problem into two subproblems: seasonal and daily optimization. The ANTARES software tool intended for economic and adequacy analysis was used to determine: the strategy of seasonal water use from reservoir power plants, optimal seasonal operation of pumped storage hydropower plants, and the unit commitment of thermal power plans. This tool solves the problem of optimal engagement of production units to minimize system operating costs while respecting the defined techno-economic limitations. The results of the seasonal optimization are the input data for the second step, that is, day-ahead economic dispatch, taking into account the required level of secondary and tertiary reserves. Software developed at the School of Electrical Engineering in Belgrade was used to solve this optimization problem. Based on the established methodology and software, the optimal engagement of EPS production units for the existing and future cases in terms of installed RES capacities was calculated. Calculations were made for typical years in terms of hydrology.

Despite overall progress in COVID-19 vaccination rates in Cleveland, vaccine inequity persists as young people from minority communities are often less likely to be vaccinated. COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy is not just an issue of misinformation or lack of information. Vaccine hesitancy among young people is reflective of wider issues such as mistrust in the state or the medical establishment and negative experiences during the pandemic. This report is based on case study research conducted among minority youth (ages 12-18) in Cleveland, Ohio. While public discourse may label young people as “vaccine hesitant,” we found that there were hesitation differences based on social location and place. We found the greatest vaccine hesitancy among older youth (15+ years old), particularly those from minoritized communities. Unvaccinated youth were also more likely to be from families and friend groups that were unvaccinated. While some expressed distrust of the vaccines, others reported that COVID-19 prevention was not a priority in their lives. Instead, concerns over food security, livelihood, and education take precedence. Minority youth were more likely to report negative experiences with authorities, including teachers at their schools and police in their communities. Our findings demonstrate that COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy is embedded in a context that drives relationships of mistrust between minority communities and authorities, with implications for COVID-19 vaccine uptake. Young people’s attitudes toward vaccines are further patterned by experiences within their community, school, family, and friend groups.
