Cichorium endivia is a leafy crop closely related to Lactuca sativa that comprises two major botanical varieties characterized by a high degree of intraspecific morphological variation: var. latifolium with broad leaves (escarole) and var. crispum with narrow crisp curly leaves (endive). To investigate the relationship between leaf morphology and photosynthetic activity, escaroles and endives were used as a crop model due to the striking morphological diversity of their leaves. We constructed a leaf database for transcription factors (TFs) and photosynthesis-related genes from a refined C. endivia transcriptome and used RNA-seq transcriptomic data from leaves of four commercial endive and escarole cultivars to explore transcription factor regulatory networks. Cluster and gene co-expression network (GCN) analyses identified two main anticorrelated modules that control photosynthesis. Analysis of the GCN network topological properties identified known and novel hub genes controlling photosynthesis, and candidate developmental genes at the boundaries between shape and function. Differential expression analysis between broad and curly leaves suggested three novel TFs putatively involved in leaf shape diversity. Physiological analysis of the photosynthesis properties and gene expression studies on broad and curly leaves provided new insights into the relationship between leaf shape and function.

Tipburn is an important disorder caused by a calcium deficiency that affects the marketability of endives. Genotype, air relative humidity, and temperature are directly involved in tipburn occurrence. Our study aimed to investigate the effect of cropping systems and relative humidity on the marketable yield, nitrate accumulation, and incidence of tipburn in endives. Two cultivars were evaluated in pots (‘Cuartana’ and ‘Natacha’), two cropping systems (greenhouse and open-field), and in two different air humidity levels (high level: plants under a plastic tunnel with an extra supply of humidity with micro-sprinklers, and low level: plants without an extra supply of humidity and outside of a plastic tunnel) during two years (2013 and 2014) in different growing seasons. Nitrate content was determined by reflectometry, and tipburn was evaluated using a qualitative scale. Results showed that tipburn was favored under greenhouse with low humidity levels, with 40–60% plants affected. ‘Natacha’ was more susceptible to tipburn (>20% plants affected) than ‘Cuartana’ (<20% plants affected). Leaf nitrate accumulation was favored by the highest temperatures (greenhouse). It is concluded that in our conditions, tipburn incidence in endives depends on the interaction of genotype and the environmental conditions. Nitrate content was more influenced by the temperature than by the cultivars used.

Salinity either of soil or of irrigation water causes disturbance in plant growth and nutrient balance and reduces crop yields. The effects of NaCl salinity and/or calcium or potassium level on the plant growth and severity of gray mold (Botrytis cinerea [De Bary] Whetzel) were investigated in endive (Cichorium endivia L., cv. Green Curled) grown with the nutrient film technique under greenhouse conditions during early spring. Plants were supplied with nutrient solutions containing 40 mmol/l of sodium chloride (NaCl) and/or 10 mmol/l potassium sulphate (K<sub>2</sub>SO<sub>4</sub>). Additionally, plants treated with foliar spray of 15 mmol/l calcium nitrate [(CaNO<sub>3</sub>)<sub>2</sub>] or distilled water. Salinity or K- and Ca-enrichment mainly affected the upper part of endive plants and reduced leaf area. However, when salinity combined with either K- or Ca-enrichment, the negative impact of salinity on plant growth was reversed. Salinized and/or K- and Ca-enriched, plants did not differ in plant biomass, leaf/root ratio, leaf fresh weight, leaf number, and root length. Salinity did not have any impacts on photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, and intercellular CO<sub>2</sub> concentration. Indeed, photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance increased with Ca foliar application and decreased with K while the opposite effects were observed for the intercellular CO<sub>2</sub> concentration. Total nutrient uptake was reduced 2-fold in salt-treated plants compared to controls. No symptoms of tip-burn or blackheart were recorded throughout the experimental study. Endive grown in the nutrient film technique had tolerance to NaCl salinity, and this method could be used to exploit saline water in soilless culture. These findings also suggest that a proper management of the salt concentration of the nutrient solution plus external elemental enrichment may provide an efficient tool to improve the quality of leafy vegetables with little effect on yield.

Low molecular weight carbohydrates (LMWC) were determined in foods usually consumed in Spain, namely: rice, biscuits, white bread, noodles, honey, as well as the most common vegetables of the Mediterranean diet. LMWC in foods contained mono-, di- and oligosaccharides; soluble sugars ranged from 0.2% to 83.8% in rice and honey, respectively. All samples contained different amounts of sucrose, glucose and fructose, except for garlic that only contained sucrose (2.4%). Inulin was high in garlic (13.5%), followed by onion (1.4%) and globus artichoke (0.5%). Minor inulin contents were detected in biscuits (0.2%) and a trace in noodles, white bread and endives. Non-digestible oligosaccharides (NDO) detected in the samples ranged from 12% honey, 3.2% garlic, 3.7% onion, 1.3% globus artichoke and minor amounts in noodle, endive, biscuit and white bread. According to the determined LMWC contents and the current intake of these foods in Spain, the amount of mono- and disaccharide would be 4.3 kg/person/year, while that of inulin plus non-digestible oligosaccharides, 0.4 kg/person/year. Thus, the estimated daily intake of the potential prebiotics inulin plus NDO from the foods selected was 1.1 g/person.

Storage experiments were conducted to follow the behavior of pathogens on fresh-cut vegetables (trimmed brussels sprouts, grated carrots, shredded iceberg lettuce, and shredded chicory endives) packaged under an equilibrium-modified atmosphere (EMA) (2 to 3% O2, 2 to 3% CO2, and 94 to 96% N2) and stored at 7°C. As a comparison, fresh-cut vegetables were also packaged in a perforated high-barrier film (air conditions) and stored at 7°C. In a first step, the shelf life of the vegetables in the two kinds of packages was determined by evaluating the microbiological quality as well as the sensorial quality (appearance, taste, and odor). In general, sensorial properties were faster in limiting the shelf life than microbiological criteria. The shelf life of the vegetables stored under an EMA was extended by 50% or more, compared with the air-stored vegetables. In a second storage experiment, the four fresh-cut vegetables were inoculated with a cocktail of psychrotrophic pathogens (Listeria monocytogenes, Aeromonas caviae [HG4]) and A. bestiarum (HG2) before packaging under an EMA and air at 7°C. The inoculated pathogens were more influenced by the type of vegetable than by the type of atmosphere. No growth was detected on the brussels sprouts or on carrots (L. monocytogenes). Aeromonas spp. had a higher growth rate than L. monocytogenes on the shredded chicory endives and shredded iceberg lettuce at 7°C.

Les aptitudes de Cichorium intybus L. Var. Magdebourg en culture in vitro ont été contrôlées. A partir de racines tubérisées matures ainsi que de feuilles cotylédonnaires issues de germination, il est possible d'obtenir une callogenèse importante, d'installer des suspensions cellulaires et d'induire la formation de bourgeons. En exploitant la variabilité induite par la culture in vitro, deux souches de cals résistantes au glyphosate et une souche résistante au glufosinate ont été isolées. Comparées aux souches sensibles, elles prolifèrent respectivement sur des doses 25 et 7,5 fois plus élevées. Il a été montré que les souches résistantes au glyphosate ont une activité EPSP synthase plus élevée que les souches sensibles (4,4 et 4 fois) alors que l'enzyme est inhibée de la même manière par l'herbicide. Ceci laisserait supposer l'existence d'un mécanisme d'amplification génique. A partir de ces souches, des plantes ont été obtenues mais après acclimatation en serre une seule souche s'est montré viable. Du cal a été initié à partir de ces plantes. Les tests in vitro ont montré que la résistance est conservée partiellement (18 fois) et que l'activité enzymatique a légèrement diminué (3,3 fois). Ces plantes sont totalement autoincompatibles, mais par croisement avec des plantes sensibles des graines ont été obtenues. Les traitements en serre effectués sur des jeunes plantules ont montré que toutes les plantes F1 sont sensibles au glyphosate. Les tests in vitro ont confirmé ces résultats. L'activité enzymatique des plantes F1 in vivo et in vitro est comparable à celles des plantes sensibles. Deux hypothèses sont envisageables, il s'agit soit d'un caractère récessif soit d'un variant épigénique

La Flore bactérienne isolée de pourritures sur endives au forçage a été caractérisée. L'investigation a porté sur des symptômes typiques connus et sur des symptômes nouvellement étudiés (sur racines et sur chicons). Les isolats s'apparentent surtout à Erwinia carotovora variété atroseptica. Ils forment un groupe homogène sur le plan biochimique et hérérogène par leurs caractéristiques sérologiques. Des méthodes d'évaluation du pouvoir pathogène des souches bactériennes isolées ont été testées sur plantes entières en cours de forçage et sur organes isolés ; l'incidence du stade de développement de la plante, du niveau d'inoculum et du mode d'inoculation sont étudiés. Le cycle de la bactérie a été abordé par l'étude de la pénétration d'un inoculum à E. C. A. Spontané et artificiel ; l'inoculation des souches durant la phase de végétation de C. Intybus n'aboutit pas à l'expression de la bactériose. Les inoculations en cours de forçage donnent des résultats très variables et surtout dépendants de la température. L'observation de la bactériose dans la plupart des lots témoins expérimentaux permet de conclure à la présence potentielle d'Erwinia dans toutes les racines au forçage : la bactériose à Erwinia est une maladie opportuniste. L'utilisation d'un agent chimique (sulfate de cuivre sous forme de bouillie bordelaise), pouvant modifier qualitativement et quantitativement la flore bactérienne, semble indiquer une possibilité de pénétration d'E. C. A. Au stade végétatif et permet de montrer la présence d'un potentiel infectieux important au niveau des bases foliaires résiduelles après récolte ce potentiel étant responsable de la pourriture ultérieure pendant le forçage. L'étude de quelques facteurs agro-climatiques sur l'expression de la maladie montre que le passé agronomique de la racine (notamment de la fumure azotée au champ) est corrélé positivement à la mortalité des chicons, et que les conditions de conservation des racines ainsi que la température de forçage sont déterminantes pour l'expression de la maladie
The bacterial flora isolated from chicory rot during forcing was characterized. Typical well-known symptoms as well as atypical symptoms encountered during present studies, were investigated on roots and chicons. Isolates were mainly related to Erwinia carotovora subsp. Atroseptica. They formed an homogeneous group from a biochemical point of view and an heterogeneous one with respect to their serological characteristics. Methods for assessing pathogenicity of the isolated bacterial strains were tested on whole plants during forcing and also on isolated organs in order to deter­ m ne the effect of the physiological stage of plants, of inoculum level and of modes of inoculation. The life cycle of bacteria was investigated by studying the penetration in plant tissues of spontaneous and artificial E. C. A. Inocula; the inoculation of strains during the vegetative growth of C. Intybus did not lead to expression of bacteriosis. Inoculations during forcing produced much variable results which were especially dependent on temperature. Observations of bacteriosis in most of the experimental control lots suggest that Erwinia was potentially present in all roots during forcing: this bacteriosis is an opportunistic disease. The use of a chemical (copper sulphate in the form of Bordeaux mixture) able to modify the bacterial flora both qualitatively and quantitatively, indicated that E. C. A. Could possibly penetrate into plants during vegetative growth. It also demonstrated the presence of bacterial infection in leaf residues (left after harvesting of roots) which accounts for subsequent rot during forcing. The study of the influence of some agro-climatic factors on disease expression showed that previous growing conditions of roots (nitrogen fertilization in the field) were positively correlated to chicon mortality, and that the disease expression was highly dependent on the conditions of root storage and forcing temperature

As a Kentuckian, the past has always seemed to maintain a complex relationship with the present. Subdivisions spread across what were once tobacco fields and plantation estates; Appalachian folkways have long been slowly disappearing due to technological change, outmigration, and environmental degradation. In the poetry collection “pretty sad endings,” I try to ask— as our physical and cultural landscape changes, what are we losing, and what do we gain? And what remains (however transformed)? I use surrealism throughout the manuscript to elevate aspects of contemporary suburbia, Americana, relationships, and popular culture to the level of the mythical and spiritual. By distorting the everyday, I hope to tease out some of the real wonder that might be waiting in unexpected places, such as a cul-de-sac, a freeway billboard, or a drugstore parking lot. In these poems, I also try to create spaces where humor and emotional sincerity can coexist, while maintaining a raw curiosity in the strangeness and power of words themselves. My hope is not just that this collection can communicate some of the joys and hardships and eccentricities of my home, but that it can also speak relevantly about contemporary American life and relationships to readers anywhere.

Des protoplastes foliaires issus de jeunes plantes cultivées « in vitro » de Cichorium intybus L. Var. Witloof ou « zoom » se divisent de façon satisfaisante dans un milieu liquide comportant : des éléments minéraux, des vitamines, du saccharose, de la glutamine, du mannitol et des substances de croissance (ANA et BAP). Les microcals formés après 7 jours de culture poursuivent leur prolifération sur un milieu gélosé de composition identique mais de pression osmotique réduite. A partir des cals d'une taille supérieure à 2 mm, il est possible d'initier des bourgeons après modification des milieux de culture utilisés en phase initiale : remplacement de la glutamine par de l'azote minéral, réduction des concentrations hormonales et suppression du mannitol. Les bougeons formés s'allongent et s'enracinent sur un milieu nutritif gélosé dépourvu d'hormones, réparti dans des flacons favorisant les échanges gazeux. Le transfert des plantes en serre est possible 4 à 5 mois après la mise en culture des protoplastes, leur culture dans des conditions favorables à la floraison permet d’obtenir des inflorescences apparemment normales. Le forçage des racines produit des endives présentant toutes les caractéristiques du cultivar « zoom ». Le fait de disposer d’un moyen de produire des plantes à partir de protoplastes est intéressant. Toutefois l’utilisation des protoplastes pour la multiplication ou l’amélioration de la chicorée ne pourrait être effective que le jour où les rendements des plantes seront améliorés.

Türk Boğazlarından geçiş rejimiyle ilgili tarihsel süreçte birçok siyasi ve hukuki süreç yaşanmıştır. Büyük devletlerin Boğazlara yönelik istekleri her zaman varlığını hissettirmiştir. Osmanlı Devleti’nin İstanbul’un fethi sonrasında Boğazlara yönelik hâkimiyeti 19. yüzyılın başlarına değin devam etmiştir. İkili ve çok taraflı antlaşmalarla Boğazlardaki Türk hâkimiyeti devam ettirilmeye çalışılmış ancak Mondros Antlaşması’nın imzalanmasıyla birlikte Boğazlar işgale uğramıştır. 1923 Lozan Sulh Muahedenamesi’ne ilaveten imza edilen Lozan Boğazlar Sözleşmesi’yle Boğazlara geçiş serbestliği ve Boğazlar Komisyonu getirilmiştir. 1930 sonrasında dünyada gelişen yayılmacı politikalar neticesinde Lozan Boğazlar Sözleşmesi’nin Türk Boğazlarının güvenliğini tehditten korumadığı endişesi ortaya çıkmıştır. Çünkü I. Dünya Savaşı ardından galip devletlerin yenilen taraftaki devletlere imzalattıkları anlaşmalar neticesinde güven problemi yaşanan birçok durum meydana gelmiştir. Bu durumdan etkilenen Türkiye de bu endişelerini 23 Mayıs 1933 tarihinde Londra’daki silahsızlanma konferansında dile getirmiştir. Türkiye’nin Milletler Cemiyeti’nde dile getirdiği güvenlik endişesi ve çabaları neticesinde 1936’da Montrö Boğazlar Sözleşmesi imzalanmış ve Türkiye’nin egemenlik haklarına zarar veren ve güvenlik endişesi yaratan kısıtlamalardan kurtulmuştur. Bu çalışmada Lozan Boğazlar Sözleşmesi’yle birlikte Atatürk Dönemi dış politikasında meydana gelen egemenlik haklarından mahrumiyetin ve güvenlik endişesinin yarattığı sürecin anlatılması amaçlanmıştır.

Covid-19 salgınının günlük yaşantımıza etkileri halihazırda devam ederken tüm dünyada olduğu gibi Türkiye’de de sosyal ve ekonomik saikler okulların açılmasını adeta bir zorunluluk haline getirmiştir. Türkiye’de okullar yüz yüze eğitim için yeni eğitim öğretim yılına hazırlıklarını tamamlamaya çalışmaktadır. Salgının yayılımı açısından en kritik kamusal alanlardan biri olan okullarda sürecin nasıl yürütüleceği ve okullar açıkken salgının ne derece kontrol altında tutulabileceği konusu toplumun her kesiminde merak ve endişe uyandırmaktadır. Bu minvalde elinizdeki bu çalışmanın amacı Covid-19 salgını sürecinde kapalı kalan okulların yeni eğitim öğretim dönemine ne kadar hazır olduklarının değerlendirilmesi ve bu bağlamda politika önerilerinin ortaya konmasıdır. Bu kapsamda ilk olarak okulların mevcut fiziksel koşullarının sağlık önlemleri açısından yeterliği ele alınmıştır. Okulların tam kapasite ile yüz yüze yeniden açılması sürecinde yöneticileri, öğretmenleri, öğrencileri ve velileri ilgilendiren mevcut ve muhtemel problemler değerlendirilmiş ve çözüm önerilerine değinilmiştir. Akabinde eğitim-öğretim planlama, müfredat ve içeriklere dair analizler ile rezilyans uygulamalarının etkililiğini artıracak tavsiyelere yer verilmiştir. Sonuç bölümünde politika uygulayıcıları ve eğitim paydaşları için uygulanabilir ve somut politika notları sunulmuştur
