Broadly defined, manipulation is a kind of covert behavior or a means, whether linguistic or non- linguistic, used by manipulators in certain communicative encounters to achieve their goals, desires, and interests regardless of the perceptual, cognitive , and emotional feelings of their interlocutors. In this regard, they utilize myriad devices, especially those dishonest ones, like cunning, lying, making tricks, deceiving, and the like. To be successful in doing so, manipulators should have a cognition which enables them to pursue their own interests through making use of some aspects of human cognition, notably reasoning, checking for likeliness, and emotions. As such, manipulators play on their targets’ weaknesses to influence their motivation, beliefs, emotions, and reaction. For some scholars, manipulation is a psychologicalissuebecause it can be considered as a kind of human behavior or cognition. For others, it falls within the region of cognitive pragmatics since it is basically based on the use of cognition in relation to context. In this study, as far as language use is concerned, it is argued that manipulation is more pragmatic than psychological in nature. Besides, it is characterized by pragmatic features other than the cognitive ones. Hence, it is felt, here, that there is a need to reveal those pragmatic aspects to locate its treatment in its right place. This is done by means of identifying the relationship between manipulation and various pragmatic theories and issues.

The article presents the results of the validation of the Tendency To Forgive and Attitudes Towards Forgiveness Scale on a Russian sample which included 366 healthy adult participants. The questionnaire is based on R. Enright’s cognitive model of forgiveness, in which the ability to forgive is determined by the social cognition quality (awareness of one’s own emotions and emotion self-regulation and empathy towards the offender). The study established plausible reliability of both scales. Confirmatory factor analysis was also conducted. The authors analyzed correlations of the tendency to forgive and attitudes towards forgiveness with indicators of emotional ill-being, social cognition, quality of life, life satisfaction, and a number of personal traits (such as Machiavellianism and the Big Five: extraversion, conscientiousness, agreeableness, neuroticism, openness to experience). The results are discussed in the context of adaptive versus maladaptive aspects of forgiveness, as well as in the context of the psychological basis of adaptive ability to forgive.

AbstractThis paper uses a psychological/computational theory of emotional coherence to explain several aspects of religious belief and practice. After reviewing evidence for the importance of emotion to religious thought and cognition in general, it describes psychological and social mechanisms of emotional cognition. These mechanisms are relevant to explaining the acquisition and maintenance of religious belief, and also shed light on such practices as prayer and other rituals. These psychological explanations are contrasted with ones based on biological evolution.

We present an agent-based approach to modeling crowd behavior that is based on complementary psychological and engineering principles. The application focus is for developing realistic models that address not only the physical but also the psychological aspects of crowd behavior. Our approach to modeling the psychology of a crowd is based on the principle of emotional reflection. According to this principle, human emotions are evoked in response to the perception of other people’s emotions, implying that emotions propagate in a crowd as a result of each person’s perception of other crowd members’ emotions in addition to external factors. We demonstrate that when incorporating an emotional component into a crowd simulation, there is enough sensitivity between the outcomes and emotion-based responses to provide a rich and powerful test-bed for assessing possible effects of emotionally driven responses in crowds. The emotional model is coupled with a movement model that is based on the social forces formulation, but with parameters that vary according to the current emotional state of each crowd member. We present the model along with results of how different emotional levels can affect the movement dynamics of crowds.

Simultaneous self-regulation of cognition and emotions and its consequences on learning Abstract: The learning process relies on problem-solving activities and the acquisition of knowledge and skills through self-regulation. Emotions and metacognitions are some of the key aspects that allow the improvement of problem-solving. The emotional dimension consists of structured and useful reactions in regard to a specific situation. Emotions can either be an asset or a disadvantage when one is involved in a learning situation. As for metacognition, it’s a compound of processes and knowledge (of cognitive or emotional nature) connected through self-regulation and self-awareness. Thanks to attentional practices (AP), one can regulate both cognitions and emotions. These AP come from various traditions focused on the exploration of the mind and self-regulation of psychological and physiological activities. Many studies show the positive effects of such practices on health, and some recent studies also report improvements in self-regulation thanks to AP. In this paper, we suggest that the creation of new holistic approaches would allow us to work on metacognition and emotions on a global scale, in order to improve the ability of individuals to engage in self-regulated learning efficiently.

Emotions signal flaws in the person’s anticipation systems, or in other words, in aspects of models of how the world works. As these models are essentially shared in society, emotional challenges experienced by any individual are of relevance to the community of others. Emotions emerge at the heart of the individual experience, the only place where collective knowledge can be tested against the world. Once felt, emotions generate a cascade of psychological facts: compelling concern, cognitive work, social sharing, and propagation of the social sharing. The larger the fault detected, the more intense the emotion, the more intensive the cognitive work it generates, and the broader the social sharing of the episodic information. Through the social sharing of emotions, common knowledge is updated and enriched.

There is evidence that common processes underlie psychological disorders transdiagnostically. A challenge for the transdiagnostic movement is accounting for such processes theoretically. Theories of psychological disorders are traditionally restricted in scope, often explaining specific aspects of a disorder. The alternative to such ‘micro-theories’ is developing frameworks which explain general human cognition, so called ‘macro-theories’, and applying these systematically to clinical phenomena. Interacting Cognitive Subsystems (ICS) [Teasdale, J.D., & Barnard, P.J. (1993). Affect, cognition and change: Re-modelling depressive thought, Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, Hove] is a macro-theory which aims to explain aspects of information processing. The aim of this review is to examine whether ICS provides a useful platform for understanding common processes which maintain psychological disorders. The core principles of ICS are explained and theoretical papers adopting ICS to explain a particular psychological disorder or symptom are considered. Dysfunctional schematic mental models, reciprocal interactions between emotional and intellectual beliefs, as well as attention and memory processes, are identified as being important to the maintenance of psychological disorders. Concrete examples of how such variables can be translated into novel therapeutic strategies are given. The review concludes that unified theories of cognition and emotion have the potential to drive forward developments in transdiagnostic thinking, research and treatment.

BackgroundNoonan syndrome (NS) is a common genetic disorder, characterized by short stature, facial dysmorphia, congenital heart defects and a mildly lowered IQ. Impairments in psychosocial functioning have often been suggested, without, however, systematic investigation in a clinical group. In this study, different aspects of affective processing, social cognition and behaviour, in addition to personal well-being, were assessed in a large group of patients with NS.MethodForty adult patients with NS were compared with 40 healthy controls, matched with respect to age, sex, intelligence and education level. Facial emotion recognition was measured with the Emotion Recognition Task (ERT), alexithymia with both the 20-item Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) and the Bermond–Vorst Alexithymia Questionnaire (BVAQ), and mentalizing with the Theory of Mind (ToM) test. The Symptom Checklist-90 Revised (SCL-90-R) and the Scale for Interpersonal Behaviour (SIB) were used to record aspects of psychological well-being and social interaction.ResultsPatients showed higher levels of cognitive alexithymia than controls. They also experienced more social distress, but the frequency of engaging in social situations did not differ. Facial emotion recognition was only slightly impaired.ConclusionsHigher levels of alexithymia and social discomfort are part of the behavioural phenotype of NS. However, patients with NS have relatively intact perception of emotions in others and unimpaired mentalizing. These results provide insight into the underlying mechanisms of social daily life functioning in this patient group.

SummaryTo summarise then, in 1962 RET displayed important features still current. These include the inter-relatedness of cognitive, emotive and behavioural processes, the important role that cognition plays in psychological problems, its humanistic view of the self, and the futility and dangers of self-rating. The emphasis on perpetuation rather than acquisition processes of emotional disturbance holds good now as it did then, and the core view of therapeutic change is essentially the same now as it was in 1962, despite further, more recent elaborations.Significant change has occurred in RET since 1962 that updates several of Ellis' original ideas. These include the distinction between interpretations (or inferences) and evaluations, the primary of musts in accounting for psychological disturbance, the clear distinction between healthy and unhealthy negative emotions and the greater role according to force and energy in the change process. In addition, a greater emphasis is placed on biological aspects of emotional disturbance now than 30 years ago. Finally, a greater range of cognitive, imaginal, emotive and behavioural methods are found in current RET literature than in Reason and Emotion in Psychotherapy, where Ellis restricts himself to illustrating a few cognitive and behavioural techniques.RET, then, has grown and developed over the past 30 years. In large part, this reflects the theory's flexibility and the competent people who have worked to make RET one of the most viable and widely used cognitive-behaviour therapies.

Objectives The purpose of this study is to understand the experience of binge eating and compensatory behavior by exploring the process from before to after watching mukbang and its subsequent aspects targeting women in their 20s and 30s who tend to have Bulimia Nervosa. Methods Using Creswell's (2013) qualitative case study method, in-depth interviews were conducted with four women in their 20s and 30s with tendencies toward bulimia nervosa. Afterwards, the interview data was divided into biological-psychological-social dimensions based on the biopsychosocial model and their experiences were examined. Results 5 dimensions, 16 common themes, and 51 individual themes were derived. Biological factors were hormonal changes, genetic factors, drug diagnosis, and pain during binge eating. Cognitive factors among psychological factors were the usual cognitive processing method, thoughts after binge eating, and the impact of watching mukbang on cognition, and emotional factors. The behavioral factors were found to be the usual way of processing emotions, emotions after binge eating, and the effect of watching mukbang on emotions. Behavioral factors were shown to be the usual binge eating behavior, coping after binge eating, and the effect of watching mukbang on behavior. Social factors were related to past history. , it was found to be an unaccepting family environment and an environment that triggers binge eating. Conclusions By exploring the implications and limitations of counseling for eating disorders, we seek to provide basic data for therapeutic intervention for women suffering from eating disorders.

Feeling bad is one thing, judging something to be bad another. This hot/cold distinction helps resolve the debate between bipolar and bivariate accounts of affect. A typical affective reaction includes both core affect (feeling good or bad) and judgments of the affective qualities of various aspects of the stimulus situation (which can have both good and bad aspects). Core affect is described by a bipolar valence dimension in which feeling good precludes simultaneously feeling bad and vice versa. Judgments of affective quality of opposite valence can occur simultaneously because the stimulus situation has many aspects. Affective reaction can also include an emotional meta-experience, which can, but rarely does, embrace simultaneous emotion categories of opposite valence.

Magda B. Arnold's phenomenological and cognitive theory on emotions is subjected to a critical review. The theory is well-known and has inspired other theorists in the field of emotion research. However, it has generated hardly any research. At first sight this is astonishing because of its obvious qualities. Arnold does justice to the subjective nature of emotions, integrates psychological with physiological aspects, and offers a relatively simple and parsimonious theoretical model. Salient points are the conceptualization of emotions as action-tendencies, the role of appraisal in generating emotions and in emotional action, the classification of basic emotions, the explanation of increase of strength in emotions, and their organizing function or disturbing effects. A closer look into the theory, however, shows serious flaws in logical consistency and difficulties for operationalization. The authors conclude that the lack of research is partly due to the theory.

The article explores the concept of human emotions as a dynamic, systemic, socio-psychological phenomenon with distinct linguistic-cultural specificity and national characteristics. The choice of this research topic is driven by a perceived spiritual crisis affecting humanity in general, and the German ethnic group in particular, as well as by an anthropocentric approach to contemporary linguistic issues. The German language is seen as peripheral in many research contexts. The hypothesis underpinning this study suggests that a spiritual crisis is linked to a lack of inner harmony, arising from cognitive dissonance. From a theoretical perspective, cognitive dissonance should encourage individuals to engage in cognitive processes, enhancing their understanding of the world and their place within it. This process includes critical examination of received information and validation of its truth. Discomfort caused by mental dissonance can be resolved by changing behaviors or beliefs, controlling emotions, revising values or conflicting ideas, or increasing emotogenic knowledge. The article emphasizes that the definition of emotion remains open-ended, with its interpretation often tied to specific philosophical teachings, biological, somatic, psychological, cognitive, eclectic, or linguistic theories. The primary objective of the study is to establish a paradigm of the most typical emotions experienced by the German people over many centuries, as evidenced by paremias (proverbial expressions). Emotions that are codified in texts more than three times are identified as typical. Despite significant contributions from philosophers, psychologists, ethnographers, historians, sociologists, linguists, and philologists to the study of emotions, many aspects remain unresolved, particularly with respect to emotions in texts and paremias. Through this research, the concepts of "emotion," "emotion in text," and "emotion in paremia" are clarified. The study also provides a brief overview of the German way of life during the 8th to 18th centuries, offering examples of explicit and implicit emotions, as well as their variants. Additionally, emotional patterns and their variations are examined, distinguishing positive, neutral, negative, and undefined emotions based on semantic features. Ultimately, the article confirms the idea that there is a relationship between emotions and the cultural and spiritual experiences of an ethnic group.

The emotional and expressive units of the language, pragmatic competencies regarding the transmission and reception of emotions arising from the subtext of inflections in the Kazakh language are illustrated in the psycholinguistic aspect of the study. As a result of psycholinguistic research in the field of Kazakh linguistics related to modern linguistic research on the problems of "language and psychology", it was revealed that such areas as ethnopsychology, individual psychology and social psychology are based on the cognition and instillation of values. From linguo-psychological activity, as an example of the power and suggestiveness of a word in language, psycho-physiological concepts are comprehensively displayed as linguistic, intuitive and sensory perception and reaction in the cognitive consciousness of the ethno-community in response to phenomena occurring in the world. Therefore, the consideration of the psycholinguistic meaning of emotional and expressive lexical units in poetic texts is due to the current demand and it is considered as one of the urgent problems in the close interrelation between language and psychology, language and feelings.

This article considers the role of emotional and cognitive aspects in modern areas of psychotherapy. It reveals long-term psychotherapeutic effects of incoherent dealing with client’s feelings and thoughts, based on actual case studies in modern psychotherapy and reflected in the literature on the subject. The analysis of psychotherapeutic texts reveals authors’ statements contradicting the general knowledge of feelings and emotions and suggests ways of eliminating such contradictions and simplifications. The article also considers how warping towards rationality can go unnoticed, to the detriment of dealing with feelings, and how the self-improvement process can lose its integrity, causing a distortion of basic psychological literacy instead of its enhancement. The article outlines and justifies two attitudes that are proposed to be developed among clients in any form and area of psychotherapy: the attitudes to live through their feelings and then release their unwanted feelings. We describe new psychological aspects in the process of living through one’s feelings in general and in the process of psychotherapy in particular. The integration of basic psychological knowledge of emotional intelligence into the theory and practice of various areas of psychotherapy can significantly improve the work of practicing psychologists and psychotherapists with clients and can effectively contribute to the convergence of different areas of psychotherapy.

Psychological Momentum (PM) is commonly referred to in competitive sports, but still has to be considered elusive from a scientific perspective. This study explores coaches’ perception of triggers, strategies and characteristics of PM in female elite handball teams. Semi-structured interviews with nine coaches were evaluated using a qualitative content analysis. The results revealed that positive and negative PM were characterized by factors regarding behavior, cognition, confidence, emotions, and the team. Triggers for positive PM were categorized into confidence, players’ individual factors, team factors, and team-opponent-factors, whereas triggers for negative PM related to coach factors, confidence, external factors, players’ individual factors, and team factors. Moreover, strategies emerged that are considered beneficial for controlling PM. The results are discussed with emphasis on behavioral aspects, confidence, emotions, team factors, and application. Foundations based on this study and recent research lead to the assumption that PM is probably best portrayed in a circular approach.

The psychology behind internet memes is complex and multi-faceted, drawing on various aspects of human behaviour and cognitive processes. Memes have become a part of the social media culture and its popularity continues to grow in India. The analysis of internet memes can provide valuable insights into the cultural, social, and psychological aspects of our online lives. In the field of media psychology, the impact of memes on human behaviour and cognition is a growing area of research. Researchers are exploring the ways in which memes can be used to shape social attitudes, as well as the psychological mechanisms behind their popularity and spread. Media psychology and memes are both important areas of study that shed light on the ways in which communication occurs in contemporary society. By examining the relationship between media messages and the psychological processes that underlie them, we can gain a better understanding of how communication shapes our attitudes, beliefs, and behaviours. In the context of memes, the emotions evoked by a meme can be amplified through its spread and can have a significant impact on public opinion and discourse. Based on qualitative analysis, the paper employs the Social Cognitive Theory along with Uses and Gratifications Theory to decode the manifestation of memes in our social system and creation of echo chambers.

The object of the research is memes by the art portal “Mystetstvo Peremohy”, the Ukrainian startup Reface, the application “Memomet”, “Ukrainian Memes”, REDDIT UKRAINE, “Black Humor. In Ukrainian. #BH”, “GONI Memes”, “First Private Memery”, “MEMoirs of War Time”. The study utilizes cultural-historical, comparative, interpretative, and synchronic methods. The results of the research showed that memes reflected the worldview of Ukrainians in extreme conditions and fulfilled informational, emotional, and communicative functions, as well as mobilization and activation of society. The primary (basic) emotions felt by compatriots were anger, disgust, contempt for the enemy, and joy for the initial victories. The spread of memes with such emotions warned against social apathy and the emergence of fear, guilt, shame, anxiety, or wonder, while socializing Ukrainians through this genre contributed to the formation of secondary emotions: love (for relatives, homeland, land), optimism, trust, and prevented the emergence of shock states of anxiety-fear-perplexity, disappointment, sadness, and also cultivated interest-excitement, vigilance-expectation-interest. Alongside propagandistic and counter-propagandistic narratives, memes reflected and simultaneously programmed the behavior of Ukrainians, shaping the social behavior of the nation in times of threat, namely: basic coping strategies of “problem-solving” and “seeking social support”, which made the existence of the “avoidance” strategy impossible. It was established that in the aforementioned satirical communication strategies, predominantly two-component, creolized memes worked as coping resources for overcoming social stress, transforming it from high to low or moderate, demonstrating the cognitive development of Ukrainians, orientation in wartime situations, ability to take responsibility for their own actions and behavior, accumulation of individual emotional experience (empathy), and illustrated the value-motivational structure, which overall reflects the self-concept of Ukrainians, their mental characteristics, and character, which constitutes the novelty of the research.

This article delves into the complexities of personal identity by exploring philosophical and psychological theories. It introduces John Lockes idea that personal identity is constructed through consciousness and memory, where each experience contributes to a coherent self when pieced together. However, the Ship of Theseus paradox raises questions about maintaining core identity amidst systematic transformations. The psychological perspective emphasizes the role of memory and learning in shaping an individuals self-perception. The narrative also underscores the significance of neurological functions, acting as conductors orchestrating cognition, behavior, and emotions to form a unique personal identity. The article further discusses enduring aspects of selfhood, considering biological, psychological, and social dimensions, including genetic makeup, personality traits, memories, and social interactions. It highlights the interplay of continuity and change, illustrating how personal identity maintains a consistent essence while evolving. The synthesis suggests that personal identity is like a symphony, blending continuity and change into a harmonious composition. Empirical evidence and case studies support the enduring nature of personal identity, asserting that fundamental aspects of the self persist from childhood into adulthood. The article concludes by acknowledging that the exploration of personal identity and continuity remains an ongoing journey, continually inviting scholarly inquiry.

The neurobiological systems that mediate the basic emotions are beginning to be understood. They appear to be constituted of genetically coded, but experientially refined executive circuits situated in subcortical areas of the brain which can coordinate the behavioral, physiological and psychological processes that need to be recruited to cope with a variety of primal survival needs (i.e., they signal evolutionary fitness issues). These birthrights allow newborn organisms to begin navigating the complexities of the world and to learn about the values and contingencies of the environment. Some of these systems have been identified and characterized using modern neuroscientific and psychobiological tools. The fundamental emotional systems can now be defined by the functional psychobiological characteristics of the underlying circuitries — characteristics which help coordinate behavioral, physiological and psychological aspects of emotionality, including the valenced affective feeling states that provide fundamental values for the guidance of behavior. The various emotional circuits are coordinated by different neuropeptides, and the arousal of each system may generate distinct affective/neurodynamic states and imbalances may lead to various psychiatric disorders. The aim of this essay is to discuss the underlying conceptual issues that must be addressed for additional progress in understanding the nature of primary process affective consciousness.

Adolescence is a time when individuals develop their ideal self that they will achieve in the future. A teenager begins to think abstractly and has various hopes in the future or achieves goals. In an effort to achieve this dream, teenagers are required to take various school exams such as the UN, SBMPTN, UTBK, etc. Unfortunately, teenagers often feel pressured and stressed when facing these various tests which have an impact on psychological health. Often we find teenagers who have "lost" mentally before facing the real school exam. This happens because of unstable emotional conditions in adolescence, low ability to regulate emotions, lack of support from the environment to support adolescents not only in cognitive aspects but also in emotional aspects. When teenagers are able to regulate emotions by doing a good stress management, it will increasingly support teenagers in reaching their goals and future with more focus and calm in facing exams.

IntroductionChronic pain, defined as pain persisting longer than 3 months, is more than an unpleasant sensory experience. Persistent negative emotions and emotional comorbidities, such as depression and anxiety, plague people with chronic pain leading to worsening pain intensity and increasing disability. While cognitive–behavioural therapy (CBT) is the gold standard psychological treatment, recent evidence highlights that CBT lacks efficacy for the physical and emotional aspects of chronic pain. Increasingly, researchers are investigating emotion-centric psychological therapies. While treatment modalities vary, these interventions frequently target understanding emotions, and train individuals for an emotionally adaptive response. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to quantify the efficacy of emotion-centric interventions for the physical and emotional characteristics of chronic pain.Methods/analysisElectronic databases (EMBASE, PubMed, PsychINFO, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, CINAHL and Web of Science) will be systematically searched from inception to 28 April 2022 for randomised controlled trials. Studies that compare an emotion-centric intervention with another form of treatment or placebo/control for adults (≥18 years old) with chronic pain will be included. All treatment modes (eg, online or in-person), any duration and group-based or individual treatments will be included. Studies that do not investigate at least one emotion-centric treatment will be excluded. The primary outcome is pain intensity. Secondary outcomes include emotion dysregulation, depression, anxiety, affect, safety and intervention compliance. A quantitative synthesis using a random effects meta-analysis will be adopted. Risk of bias will be evaluated using Cochrane Risk of Bias V.2.0 with the certainty of evidence assessed according to Recommendation, Assessment, Development and Evaluation. Data permitting, subgroup analysis will be conducted for intervention type and pain condition.Ethics and disseminationEthical approval is not required for this systematic review. Results may inform an efficacy study examining a new emotion-centric intervention for chronic pain. The aim of the study was to examine the overall level of empathy, its affective and cognitive aspects, the level of psychological stress, and to determine the relationship between empathy, emotions and psychological stress in nurses and health technicians employed at the Clinical Hospital Center Osijek. A cross-sectional study was conducted from March to June 2019 among 152 nurses and health technicians using the authors personally prepared questionnaire, and standard questionnaires BES, PANAS and K10 to evaluate empathy, positive and negative emotions and psychological distress of respondents. Respondents exhibited a middle – a higher degree of total empathy (median 50 and interquartile range of 43–56), with more emphasized affective than cognitive component. Psychological distress was confirmed in 65% of respondents. There was a correlation between affective and cognitive empathy (p<0.001, r = 0.355). People with a higher degree of distress also had more negative emotions that tended to increase with increasing distress (p <0.001, r = 0.426). Healthcare workers are mostly empathic and in a great deal exhibit psychological distress. It is necessary to carry out systematic surveys among health personnel to determine the empathy and distress levels to detect the risk groups who need help with stress prevention.

Procedures to evaluate the quality of musical performance, like psychological tests generally, vary in reliability and validity. How can both be optimised? The subjective world of jurors comprises input (sensations) and output (thoughts and emotions). Cognitive approaches to performance evaluation, in which different aspects are analytically considered and the results combined, are more reliable than emotional approaches, which are ultimately based on holistic ‘gut reactions’. However, emotional approaches may be more valid. Both depend on the serial order in which performances are presented to evaluators, suggesting a need for independent, computer-controlled procedures in which jurors evaluate performances in different random orders. Jurors can be influenced by performers’ appearance and movements, as well as knowledge about past performances, whether or not they believe they should be; additional blind evaluations (sound only) could help. Evaluations may depend primarily on specific features such as right-hand melodic phrasing in romantic piano music. It would be interesting to systematically track the emotional state of jurors during a competition in order to better understand the interaction between their thoughts and emotions. In general, traditional approaches to performance evaluation might be supplemented (not replaced) by psychologically inspired, computer-based procedures. A ‘superjury’ could compare evaluations from different methods or ‘subjuries’.

Stress is a generalized set of physiological and psychological responses observed when an organism is placed under challenging circumstances. The stress response allows organisms to reattain the equilibrium in face of perturbations. Unfortunately, chronic and/or traumatic exposure to stress frequently overwhelms coping ability of an individual. This is manifested as symptoms affecting emotions and cognition in stress-related mental disorders. Thus environmental interventions that promote resilience in face of stress have much clinical relevance. Focus of the bulk of relevant neurobiological research at present remains on negative aspects of health and psychological outcomes of stress exposure. Yet exposure to the stress itself can promote resilience to subsequent stressful episodes later in the life. This is especially true if the prior stress occurs early in life, is mild in its magnitude, and is controllable by the individual. This articulation has been referred to as “stress inoculation,” reminiscent of resilience to the pathology generated through vaccination by attenuated pathogen itself. Using experimental evidence from animal models, this review explores relationship between nature of the “inoculum” stress and subsequent psychological resilience.

Data on risk and protection factors have yielded robust evidence on the effects of lifestyle factors, such as diet, in preserving emotional and cognitive functioning. This review focused on the effects of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFA) on anxiety, depression, and cognition during the menopausal transition. This systematic review considered all articles published until 31 December 2021, and the search was performed on two databases, PubMed and Scopus. The fields of interest were “menopause”, “n-3 PUFA” and “emotional and cognitive aspects”. Out of the 361 articles found on PubMed and 283 on Scopus, 17 met inclusion criteria. They encompassed 11 human and 6 animal studies. Most studies reported relieved depressive symptoms in relation to n-3 PUFA intake. While controversial results were found on anxiety and cognition in humans, n-3 PUFA consistently reduced anxiety symptoms and improved cognition in animal studies. Taken together, n-3 PUFA intake shows beneficial effects on emotional and cognitive behaviours during menopause transition. However, further investigations could increase knowledge about the effectiveness of n-3 PUFA on psychological well-being in this delicate period of feminine life.

This study takes music and its corresponding psychological effects in the historical movie works as the research object, sorts out the internal connection between the musical form factors of the movie and the audience's psychology, and then analyzes the tense psychological emotions and their musical psychological aspects through movie examples, explores the sound factors and their psychological contrast effects, and finally reveals the impact of changes in proper melody on psychological outcomes. Research has found that the loudness of sound is closely related to emotional fluctuations, as well as the psychological responses brought by different types of music in dynamic and static movie scenes. When creating the sound of movie and television works, unique loudness designs for language and sound effects often bring unexpected results. The sounds in movies are all compound sounds, different from the direct physiological stimulation of pure tones on the auditory system. The tone cognition of compound sounds not only includes physiological reactions but also brings specific psychological effects. The psychological perception brought about by changes in sound frequency is different from the psychological impacts of loudness, and the psychological outcomes related to frequency are mainly attached to music and musicalized sound in creation. The rhythm, frequency, and emphasis of sound can more effectively and accurately guide the audience to realize the spatiotemporal transformation in the movie, providing them with a better viewing experience. The connection between "real" and "nonreal" scenes in historical movies usually involves high-frequency instruments and significant changes in the rhythm of the music. These self-explanatory psychological suggestive methods, combined with symbolic music, can create a specific "hypnotic" effect on the whole, bringing a combination of natural and virtual psychological effects to the audience.

The article is devoted to the problem of psychological maturity of the individual. The basic theoretical approaches to the phenomenon of maturity of the person are considered. The concept of «maturity» correlates with the study of existential aspects of human life and is considered from the point of view of its significance for society. In the course of ontogeny, maturity acts as a criterion and a condition for the successful development of various social roles, statuses, biological and socially determined functions. Psychological maturity is defined in the narrow sense as an indicator of the work of sensory, mnemonic and intellectual functions of a person; in the broad sense – as a period of conscious regulation by a person of his own behavior, which involves the realization of man as a person. There are two main approaches to understanding the structure of psychological maturity of the individual. According to the first approach, the concept of mature personality can be described by such properties as synergy, autonomy, responsibility, contact, self-acceptance, decentralization, tolerance, depth of experiences, life philosophy and creativity. According to the second approach, the structural model of the person’s psychological maturity, which consists of cognitive, motivational and behavioral components, is considered. Formation of conditions for psychological maturity is an important task for mental development in youth. The article presents the results of studying the features of emotional sphere of students with different levels of psychological maturity. In the group of boys and girls with a high level of psychological maturity, emotional profiles dominated the emotions of interest and joy. Moderate levels of personal anxiety and reactive anxiety were diagnosed. Indicators of aggressiveness and hostility are slightly higher than average values. The dominant man infestation of aggression is a verbal form. Sufficient development of emotional intelligence for students with a high level of psychological maturity is revealed. In boys and girls with a low level of psychological maturity, the main emotions were interest, joy and shame. High levels of personal anxiety and reactive anxiety are revealed, as well as the general level of aggressiveness. The results of the study of emotional intelligence indicate low values for all scales, which in sum form the low integrative values. At a high level of psychological maturity, boys and girls are characterized by a higher level of cognitive activity, emotional stability, and developed emotional intelligence. On the contrary, boys and girls with a low level of psychological maturity are more likely to prevail in the emotional profile of negative emotional experiences, anxiety, negativism and self-inducing reactions.

The prevalence of mental health problems during childhood and adolescence is on the rise. There is a growing interest in the examination of personal variables that may function as risk factors and that may be targeted for effective intervention. This study explores the relationships amongst different aspects of psychological inflexibility (one, typically studied, focusing on the individual’s responding to unwanted emotions and cognitions, and another, more recently explored, focusing on the individual’s responding to desired thoughts and affective states), emotional intelligence, and mental health symptoms. A total of 129 school-going children (mean age: 11.16 years old) completed a battery of instruments comprising the Avoidance and Fusion Questionnaire-Youth (AFQ-Y17), the Experiential Approach Scale (EAS), the Emotional Intelligence Quotient Inventory (EQi-YV), and the Revised Child Anxiety and Depression Scale (RCADS-30). Results showed that both the AFQ-Y17 score and an EAS subscale score (Anxious Clinging) were significant independent predictors of mental health symptoms in general. Emotional intelligence was predictive only for depression, and both the AFQ-Y17 and the Anxious Clinging EAS subscale significantly incremented the predictive power of a hierarchical linear regression model including all three variables. These results underscore the relevance of psychological inflexibility for child/adolescent mental health, and the need to further explore a specific aspect of inflexibility regarding positive emotions and other appetitive private events.

The founders of Positive Psychology promoted the study of the "positive end" of human functioning such as happiness, strengths, virtues etc". One of the major findings of a decade of research on the positive side of human behavior, cognitions and emotions is that the positive aspects are qualitatively different from the negative aspects on a number of dimensions (e.g., negative emotions occur automatically whereas one has to be active in order to produce positive emotions). Hence, we propose a new approach to psychotherapy that is based on current conceptualization of positive psychology: Applied Positive Psychology Therapy (APPT). It is a meta theory for a therapeutic approach based n positive psychology principles. More specifically, APPT is based on the following assumptions:1.The long range goals of most human beings are to feel good and be psychologically satisfied.2.Failures to materialize these goals are not a function of deep seated pathologies but lack of skills or knowledge how to materialize these goals.3.The goal of therapy is not to cure clients from their pathologies (i.e., the "causes" of their anxieties, phobia, or aggression) but to train them in self-control skills and other skills that would enable them to achieve psychological well being in the most effective way and in harmony with their long range goals. In the present paper I will bring two examples how APPT is practiced with aggressive adolescents and marital difficulties. In both cases clients are told to define the most essential goals of their lives and how they can master their strengths and skills in order to regain their basic life goals. In contrast to the prevailing disease model of psychological problems, APPT is based on a psych-educational model.

Fibromyalgia is a chronic musculoskeletal pain syndrome characterized by the presence of painful points on digito-palpation in anatomical specific areas, called trigger points, followed by psychological disorders like sleeping problems and alexithymia. Alexithymia is a dimension defined as the absence of words for emotions. The patient does not know how to process their own emotions and fail to externalize what feels. The investigation of possible relationship between Fibromyalgia and Alexithymia can increase knowledge about the clinical features resulting from both diseases, especially because alexithymia is poorly explored and has a significant impact in patient’s life quality. Objectives: To execute a literature review searching for a clinical association between Alexithymia and Fibromyalgia (FM), highlighting psychiatric and psychological aspects. Methods: Folowing PRISMA statement the research used Scielo, Pubmed, PsychLit and ISIweb of knowledge data base between 2009 and 2014 with the key-words: “alexithymia”, “fibromyalgia”, “psychosomatics”, “chronical pain”, “psycotherapy”, “psychoanalysis”. Results: Nine studies were selected for analysis which used instruments like the Toronto Alexithymia Scale, the psychoanalysis and cognitive comportamental therapy showing that the patient with Alexithymia and FM has a worse pain interpretation, deals badly with it and suffer the consequences in their physical and mental health due to that. Conclusion: This study suggested the important impact that alexithymia has in patients with FM, since the psychiatric and psychological factors lead to a bigger decrease in life quality of people who have already worse aspects in that, which warn for the importance of this emotional state, since it is under-diagnosed. Due to the fact that there were a small number of reviewed articles, more research about the relation between FM and Alexithymia must be done.

Objectives: Growing evidence indicates that criminologists should incorporate emotional states, such as fear, into standard deterrence frameworks. Within the fear of crime literature, there is empirical support for the “sensitivity to risk” model, which posits perceived victimization control and severity drive certainty perceptions, and these cognitions, in turn, drive fear of crime. We apply this logic to offender decision-making. Methods: Using a sample of young adults ( N = 829), an anonymous online survey, and path analysis, this study investigates an expanded model of deterrence. Results: Perceived control over apprehension directly reduced perceptions of the certainty of being apprehended. Perceived severity was both directly and indirectly, through perceived certainty, associated with greater fear of apprehension. Fear of apprehension is negatively associated with reported criminal propensity, and the effects of cognitive judgments of control, severity, and certainty have an indirect effect on reported criminal propensity via fear of apprehension. Conclusions: Our findings illustrate the need to better understand the psychological and emotional aspects of deterrence. Individuals do not simply consult their preformed certainty perceptions when considering crime. Identifying all of the relevant cognitions and the emotions is critical for advancing criminological theories and improving crime policies.

The present study examined relationships between golfers’ self-perceived emotions (e.g., irritability, nervousness, tension), task-oriented coping, perceived control, and performance during a golf competition. We implemented a process-oriented golf analysis in which competitors rated these variables hole-by-hole in a competitive golf round. Within a two-level Bayesian multivariate autoregressive model, we showed that (a) within persons, emotions and task-oriented coping were reactions that stemmed from performance on the previous hole; and (b) between persons, player skill level predicted both better scores and the ability to limit the influence of negative affect on performance. These findings highlight the complex nature of the relationship between emotions and performance. Future studies might use a similarly ecologically valid research design to more precisely measure aspects of time and potentially moderating effects of player skill level and personality. An increased understanding of the dynamic relationship between emotions and performance can promote the development of effective psychological interventions for optimal performance outcomes.

This paper delves into the intricate world of investor psychology to shed light on the processes that underlie financial decision-making. It focuses on three critical aspects: loss aversion, market anomalies, and prospect theory. These dimensions form the foundation for understanding the psychological factors that influence investors and, in turn, shape their financial choices. Loss aversion, a central theme, underscores the human tendency to fear losses more than they value gains. It explores the emotional aspects that come into play when investors face potential losses and how this can skew their judgment. The essay also examines market anomalies, emphasizing how anomalies in stock and financial markets can lead to deviations from traditional investment strategies, thereby prompting investors to question conventional wisdom. Prospect theory, a fundamental framework for comprehending decision-making, is a key component of this essay. It elaborates on the cognitive biases and emotional responses that guide investors when assessing potential gains and losses. The essay further highlights how recognizing these psychological nuances can empower investors to make more informed, rational choices. In conclusion, the essay elucidates that investor psychology plays a pivotal role in shaping financial outcomes. By acknowledging the intricate interplay of emotions and rationality, investors can make nuanced decisions that align with their financial goals and objectives.

Ayurveda is a comprehensive, unique science that encompasses all aspects of health. Ayurveda affirms health can be attained only if all the physiological parameters are in equilibrium with a healthy mind, intellect and senses. Mental health is an integral part of Ayurveda. Emotional intelligence curtains a big part of human intelligence that exteriorise the ability to sense, value and understand efficaciously, to effectively apply the power of emotions as a source of human energy. Emotional intelligence is tied to cognition and emotional balance in life. An imbalance in the emotional state can create difficulties in people's social and individual lives and is the primary etio-pathological reason for many mental and physical disorders. Ayurveda has a beautiful insight into dealing with the causes and solutions to find how we can curtail these disorders and make our lives happy. The theory of prakriti is the core concept of Ayurveda that describes the individual constitution on a mental and physical basis. It is an indicator of the physical and psychological status of a person. Ayurveda provides an exquisite and insightful perspective on the mind and the art of fostering its health through manas prakriti (mental constitution) analysis. Ayurveda annotates the balance of health and well-being by numerous means using herbs and lifestyle management tips (Achara rasayana, dincharya, ritucharya and sadvritta). The paper highlights the concept of manas prakriti about emotional intelligence and the role of Ayurveda in curing emotional intelligence-related issues.

Climate change and its consequences are recognized as one of the most important challenges to the functioning of the Earth’s ecosystem and humanity. However, the response to the threat posed by the climate crisis still seems inadequate. The question of which psychological factors cause people to engage (or not) in pro-environmental behavior remains without a comprehensive answer. The aim of this study is to establish the links between the cognitive (level of knowledge about climate change and degree of belief in climate myths), emotional (various climate emotions, especially climate anxiety) and behavioral aspects of attitudes towards the climate crisis and their determinants in the form of the Big Five personality domains and time perspectives. The stated hypotheses were verified by analyzing data collected in an online survey of 333 adults using knowledge tests and self-report methods, including psychological questionnaires (Climate Change Anxiety Scale by Clayton and Karazsia, Big Five Inventory–short version by Schupp and Gerlitz, and Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory by Zimbardo and Boyd), and measurement scales developed for this study (Climate myth belief scale, Climate emotion scale, and Inventories of current and planned pro-environmental activities). The results of stepwise regression analysis demonstrate the importance of the core personality traits and the dominant temporal perspective as determinants of belief in climate change myths, climate anxiety, as well as actual and planned pro-environmental behavior.

The clinical condition experienced by dialysis patient affects his biopsychosocial functioning, as it alters his life rhythms, personal resources, and emotional ties, creating feelings of uncertainty for the future. This requires a complex process of psychological adaptation which often leads to the manifestation of two important expressions such as anxiety and depression. Music in support of conventional treatments promotes the care of the human being in all its aspects: physical, psychological, emotional, cognitive, social and spiritual as it represents a sort of “escape”, and allows a detachment from reality, albeit momentary. It acts as a regulator of emotions and mood, also creating beneficial effects on hemodynamic parameters such as blood pressure and heart rate. Furthermore, musical stimulations are able to stimulate pleasure by acting directly on the neuroanatomical structures responsible for attention, learning, thinking and behavior. The aim of this literature review is to describe the effect of music on anxiety and depression in patients undergoing haemodialysis in order to propose it as a therapeutic intervention during dialysis treatment.

Research on the relation between bilingualism and psychological development can be structured in many ways. This review will focus on two issues: first, empirical evidence that bilingualism is associated with several aspects of psychological development; and second, holistic and partial explanations for the influence of bilingualism on personality development, whether in general or in particular. Holistic explanations usually begin by distinguishing between additive and subtractive bilingual situations, and then hypothesizing as a result a broad spectrum of behavioural changes in personality. An attempt has been made to illuminate this connection by using concepts from the psychology of learning and motivation. Partial explanations can be found in concepts such as semi-lingualism vs. surface- and cognitive linguistic competence; and in several hypotheses, such as the interdependence of language proficiency in bilinguals, and Cummins’ threshold hypothesis. In conclusion, the accumulated knowledge about bilingual development will be suggested as a resource for better understanding issues of psychological development in general. Future research should concentrate especially on mechanisms that best reverse language shift, on bilingualism and aging, bilingualism and emotions, and on bilingual episodic (autobiographical) memory.
