The article is important because the problem of emotional burnout is particularly actual one for health professionals in Ukraine and around the world at the moment. The medical staffs of medical departments are exposed to excessive stress on a daily basis in the course of their professional activities due to constant and direct contact with patients who need urgent care or are in a critical psychological state. These circumstances in most cases cause negative emotions, excessive mental stress and physical fatigue. The article purpose was to study of the syndrome of “emotional burnout” and the peculiarities of its manifestation in health professionals depending on gender. The conducted empirical study was devoted to the psychological manifestations of medical workers’ emotional burnout among (depending on genders); it was organised in 2020. The special socio-psychological study included 60 medical workers (30 women-nurses and 30 male doctors) with 5 or more years of experience working in medical institutions in Kyiv. The following psychological techniques were used in the empirical study: V.V. Boyko’s method determining the level of "emotional burnout"; J. Greenberg’s method studying burnout; Maslach Burnout Inventory for “person – person” professions; S.A. Budassi’s method for self-assessment; Cattell 16PF Questionnaire. The study results allowed us to draw the following conclusions. Analyzing the link between gender and emotional burnout, we should say that women in a stressful situation are more prone to psychosomatic and psychovegetative disorders, and men are prone to personal alienation (depersonalization). In addition, women’s syndrome is manifested not only through “resistance” symptoms - inadequate selective emotional response and reduction of professional responsibilities, but also through experienced traumatic circumstances - a symptom of the "stress" phase, while men’s emotional burnout unfolds only via the “resistance” symptoms. Prospects for further research: to consider the problem of burnout factors appeared at medical workers’ professional path in a new perspective. Based on the obtained results, we can say that many of the studied health professionals needed specialized psychological care to overcome the emotional burnout syndrome.

The article shows that psychoemotional burnout is one of the most common syndromes, developing against the backdrop of continuous exposure to stressful situations, and it leads to intellectual, mental, and physical fatigue and exhaustion. The pedagogical activities of academics lead to burnout syndrome among most professionals of this occupation. The aim of the article is theoretical substantiation of the concept of burnout syndrome, experimental study of its symptoms characteristic of academics, and presentation of recommendations for its prevention. The study involved 59 academics of different ages and records of work. The analysis of literature sources allows stating that the study of the burnout syndrome among academics requires a further search for solutions. The academic profession is one of those for which burnout syndrome is the most common because the professional activity of academics is recognized as one of the most emotionally stressful. It was found that burnout is exhaustion, which manifests itself in emotional devastation and fatigue, and depersonalization, in particular, depersonalization of relationships with people. It is established that most teachers are characterized by inadequate emotional response, reduced interaction with colleagues, termination of professional responsibilities, the desire to stay alone, intensified emotional thriftiness. A pronounced feature for teachers is the reduction of personal achievements when they negatively assess themselves, their professional achievements and success, express professional integrity in a negative way, and limit their opportunities and responsibilities.

The The manner in which politicians express their emotions while interacting with the electorates determines how the electorates will perceive the ability of the politicians to fulfilltheir electoral promises if voted into power. This paper aims to investigate the relationship between politicians’ emotional labour and burnout syndrome. The sample consists of 400politicians spread around Four (4) Local Government Areas in Delta State, namely: Aniocha North, Aniocha South, Oshimili North, and Oshimili South Local Government Area of DeltaState, Nigeria, irrespective of their political party affiliations. Emotional Labour Scale developed by Diefendorff, Croyle, and Gosserand (2005), and the Maslach Burnout Inventory developed by Maslach and Jackson (1986) were used to collect data from the respondents. Data analysis was done using descriptive statistics, t-tests, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and regression analysis. Results indicate that the politicians exhibit a high level of surface acting in the discharge of their responsibilities. It also revealed that they show the least amount of genuine emotions in their work, while the level of deep acting is moderate. In terms of burnout, politicians experience a very high level of emotional exhaustion, a moderate level of both depersonalization and lack of personal accomplishment. Results of the regression analysis show that the three dimensions of emotional labour (surface acting, deep acting and genuine emotions) are very important predictors of burnout among politicians. Consequently, this present results offer a very crucial and innovative contribution to emotional labour literature and more studies are therefore required in order to expand the scope of this research to ensure a more adequategeneralization.

We found that the character and degree of EEG changes during the perception of emotional stimuli significantly depend on the characteristics of a particular stimulus and the current level of emotional state of the viewers (emotional burnout, fatigue). The subjects with the phase of resistance of the emotional burnout syndrome at the stage of formation (“Burnout RP under development”) differ significantly from the groups with the unformed and formed Burnout Resistance Phase (“Burnout RP unformed”, “Burnout RP formed”) in the dynamics of changes of spectral power of the EEG subbands during the exposure to the emotional stimuli. The development of burnout is characterized by an increase in State Anxiety and fatigue, the desensitization to the emotionally accented information, an augmentation in social alienation and, eventually, manifests in changes in the brain response to emotional stimuli, which consist in the inhibition of high-frequency EEG components.

The objective of this work is to study the quality of working life associated to psychosocial factors and risks, burnout syndrome and emotional intelligence, as well as being able to detect predictors of the said syndrome. The sample consisted of 311 professionals working in direct contact with an intellectual disability from 15 associations of Extremadura (Spain). The Spanish version of the CESQT questionnaire was administered to evaluate burnout syndrome, the Wong & Law Emotional Intelligence Scale (WLEIS) was used to evaluate emotional intelligence, while the UNIPSICO Battery was used to evaluate the psychosocial factors of demands (work–family conflict and psychosomatic problems) and resources, such as social support and work satisfaction. The results indicate average values of burnout, revealing that work satisfaction, emotional intelligence, and social support are related to burnout syndrome. In addition, there are also positive correlations between psychosomatic symptoms and work–family conflict. Satisfaction at work, social support, and emotional intelligence (intrapersonal and interpersonal perception, use and regulation of emotions) predict burnout syndrome. What is more, the psychosomatic symptoms and work–family conflict explain, respectively, 17% and 17.9% of their variance. Thus, there is a need to develop intervention programs that encourage social support and the conciliation of family life, as well as training skills related to emotional intelligence, such as communication and conflict resolution.

Professional deformations of pedagogical workers objectify themselves by pronounced authoritarianism, uncritical thinking, rigidity in behavior. Pedagogical workers with professional deformations have the formed emotional burnout syndrome, which is represented by a high level of emotional tension in the phases of resistance, tension and exhaustion. The dominant symptoms of burnout syndrome were "experiencing traumatic circumstances", "anxiety", "inadequate emotional response", "economy of emotions", "reduction of professional duties", "personal detachment". Symptoms such as “dissatisfaction with oneself”, “being caged into a cage”, “emotional disorientation”, “emotional deficit”, “emotional alienation”, “psychosomatic and psychoemotional disorders” are clearly expressed, but there are stages of formation. Expressed authoritarianism, high rigidity, reduced criticality and reflexivity act as signs associated with emotional burnout of teachers accompanying the education and development of children with disabilities.

Objective The burnout syndrome represents a defence mechanism against stress and includes stages with decreased ability to experience feelings and emotional states. This finding suggests that burnout might be closely linked to emotional ‘blindness’ as a defence mechanism against negative and overwhelming emotions known as alexithymia. The aim of this study is to examine the relationships between burnout syndrome, alexithymia, depression and traumatic stress symptoms in healthcare professionals. Methods This empirical study assessed female healthcare professionals who work with a population of patients with diabetes, utilizing the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI-HSSMP), Burnout Measure (BM), Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II) and Traumatic Stress Checklist (TSC-40). Data were analysed using Spearman’s correlation coefficient. Results A total of 114 female participants were included (age range, 31–60 years; mean age, 46.62 ± 8.71 years). Statistically significant associations were found between burnout syndrome (BM scores) and alexithymia (TAS-20) ( r = 0.41), and between BM scores and traumatic stress (TSC-40; r = 0.63). The MBI-HSSMP emotional exhaustion subscale also correlated with alexithymia (TAS-20) ( r = 0.37). Conclusion Findings of this study suggest that alexithymia and traumatic stress are related to burnout symptoms. This dynamic may be potentially useful for detecting and preventing burnout syndrome.

The article features the professional burnout syndrome in teachers. Teaching is one of the most stressful social activities. The authors pointed out personal traits that may determine the development of the professional burnout syndrome in school teachers. They identified, justified, and experimentally verified the relationship between burnout and personality parameters. Together with age, work experience, marital and parental status, these personal traits can serve as burnout predictors. The article gives a general description of the emotional burnout phenomenon in teachers, which includes negative psychological experiences caused by the regular high emotional content or cognitive complexity. The paper also introduces factors of development of emotional burnout. The authors identified the burnout predictors based on the results of an empirical study. They determined strong empathy and internality as provoking factors that triggered emotional stress. As a rule, the stress was associated with teacher's attitude to his or her role in interpersonal relationships. The authors proposed some methods for the prevention of burnout syndrome in teachers.

The article deals with the results of the study on burnout syndrome among teachers with various work experiences in university. The aim of the study is the review of burnout psychological patterns among teachers with various work experiences in university. The main hypothesis of the study is based on the assumption that the teachers whose work experience in departmental universities is more than 10 years are more vulnerable to the burnout syndrome development. In order to attain the envisaged goals and to test the hypothesis there were used empirical methods: differential diagnosis of decreased functioning by A. Leonova and S. Velichkovskaya, diagnosis of professional burnout by K. Maslach and S. Jackson adapted by N.E. Vodop’yanova, technique for diagnosing the burnout syndrome level by V.V. Boiko. Group comparison of teachers with various work experiences in university has shown that long term professional activity leads to burnout syndrome development: the most part of examined teachers are characterized by high level of burnout syndrome which structure is observed in high intensity of resistance and exhaustion phases and such syndromes as inadequate emotional discrete response; resignation or depersonalization, emotional and moral disorientation; psychosomatic and vegetative disorders.

Introduction. Health preservation for public health care workers, by means of psycho-rehabilitation programs managing stress in medical establishments, is a topical medical, psychologic and economic task.Objective. To study levels of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and personal achievements reduction as psychologic burnout factors in workers of primary health care, depending on position and educational level, with specification of psychologic rehabilitation program and evaluation of its efficiency.Materials and methods. The study covered 137 female medical workers of outpatient departments in Moscow, with emotional burnout syndrome and length of service at least 5 years. Emotional burnout syndrome was assessed via a questionnaire «Occupational burnout» including 3 scales: «Emotional exhaustion» (1), «Depersonalization» (2) and «Personal achievements reduction» (3). 3 groups of the examinees were identified: group 1 — senior officers (15), group 2 — doctors (40), group 3 — nurses and paramedical personnel (82). All the examinees underwent 8 weeks of psychologic rehabilitation based on training of stress-resistance, personality development and relaxation methods.Results. Groups 1 and 2 demonstrated medium (scales 1 and 3) and high (scale 2) levels of emotional burnout syndrome, and the group 3 presented medium (scale 3) and low (scales 1 and 2) levels. All the groups responded positively on psychologic rehabilitation that decreased emotional exhaustion, increased responsibility for daily duties, improved and stabilized self-esteem.Conclusions. Manifestations of emotional burnout syndrome depend on peculiarities of medical workers’ occupational activities, position and educational level. Emotional exhaustion and depersonalization are more marked in senior officers and in doctors, than in nurses and paramedical personnel. Self-evaluation of occupational competence and activities is the same among all categoriesof the medical workers. psychologic rehabilitation enables to decrease symptoms of emotional burnout syndrome and is an important component of programs preserving working potential of medical establishments.

Introduction: the study of burnout syndrome intensifies over time. In 2020, MEDLINE/PubMed database contains more than 18,000 publications on this phenomenon. In its development, the concept of burnout has passed through several heterogeneous periods. Objective: to provide the description of the origin and development of the burnout concept, the features of the social environment within which this syndrome was actualized, and the current state of this problem.Material and methods: publications on the burnout syndrome were analyzed. The search was performed using the keywords “burnout”, “history” in the MEDLINE/PubMed, eLIBRARY, and Google Scholar databases. The “snowball” method was used to search for publications in the literature lists of relevant studies. Results: the phenomena similar to burnout were registered long before the start of its academic study. The initiation of scientific research on burnout occurred mainly due to global social changes associated with the increasing role of social professions and the increasing burden on workers employed in them. The results of the analysis of publications made it possible to distinguish several stages of burnout studying, which differed in the methodology of empirical research, the range of subjects included in the risk group for this phenomenon, and the number of competing psychological models of burnout. Despite the growing number of papers on burnout, issues related to the clinical status of this syndrome, its discriminant validity, methods of its prevention and coping are still relevant. The effectiveness of an interdisciplinary approach to the study of burnout can be flawed by excessive expansion of the concept and loss of its substantiveness.

Traditionally teacher's profession is associated with high levels of burnout. However the scope of the study is to differentiate the role of personality in experiencing burnout. In this paper is presented the exploration of the relationship between teacher's burnout syndrome, some personality traits and locus of control. The sample comprised of 120 teachers distributed by gender as follow 76.6% (N=92) women and 23.3% (N=28) men. To investigate the relationship between the personality characteristics (extraversion-introversion, neuroticism, psychoticism, and loci of control) and the levels of burnout syndrome dimensions (emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment) a Spearmen correlation analysis was performed. To determine which one of all personality characteristics would have the most significant influence on the burnout syndrome dimensions data were verified with eta squared coefficient. As predicted by the research suggestions the study's results showed significant correlations between teacher's burnout syndrome and personality traits - intro/extraversion, neuroticism, psychoticism, and locus of control. It has been revealed that neuroticism and intro/extroversion have the greatest effect on all three burnout dimensions (emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal achievements). Localization of control as variable predicting burnout showed a moderate effect on two out of three factors (emotional exhaustion and reduced personal achievements). With the lowest effect influencing, only emotional exhaustion was found to be psychoticism. Keywords: burnout syndrome, teacher's occupational stress, personality traits, locus of control.

Introduction To date, studies have shown a high prevalence of burnout in surgeons. Various factors have been found to be associated with burnout, and it has significant consequences personally and systemically. Junior doctors are increasingly placing their own health and wellbeing as the most important factor in their decisions about training. Finding ways to reduce and prevent burnout is imperative to promote surgical specialties as attractive training pathways. Methods The MEDLINE, PsychInfo and EMBASE databases were searched using the subject headings related to surgery and burnout. All full text articles that reported data related to burnout were eligible for inclusion. Articles which did not use the Maslach Burnout Inventory or included non-surgical groups were excluded; 62 articles fulfilled the criteria for inclusion. Findings Younger age and female sex tended to be associated with higher levels of burnout. Those further in training had lower levels of burnout, while residents suffered more than their seniors. Burnout is associated with a lower personal quality of life, depression and alcohol misuse. Academic work and emotional intelligence may be protective of burnout. Certain personality types are less likely to be burnt out. Mentorship may reduce levels of burnout. Conclusions Workload and work environment are areas that could be looked at to reduce job demands that lead to burnout. Intervening in certain psychological factors such as emotional intelligence, resilience and mindfulness may help to reduce burnout. Promoting physical and mental health is important in alleviating burnout, and these factors likely have a complex interplay.

Introduction. The paper considers the authors’ view on occupational deformation often manifested in the form of emotional burnout syndrome, and on the methods of correcting these states. Material and methods. The sample (2002-2010) was 968 people. These people were clients of the Psychological Center assistance at the Institute of Business Education of Novokuznetsk, Kemerovo Region, each of them had complaints indicating for the presence of a subdepressive state. All participants in the study were divided. into 2 groups. 465 people were assigned to the main group; 503 people presented a control group. Results and its discussion. The paper contains a model for providing comprehensive support and assistance to individuals suffered from emotional burnout syndrome with preneurotic subdepressive states. This model is presented in several stages. First of all, the psychologist must solve the problem related to the removal of the stressor, the existing stress, as well as leveling psychological balance. At the next stage, work is carried out on the formation of a person who is provided with psychological assistance of the sound responses to difficulties emerging under occupational activity, as well as his ability to deal with stress. Conclusion. Preventing emotional burnout can be the exchange of professional information with other services and departments, the improvement of interpersonal communication, the expansion of a person’s worldview, which makes a person’s world multifaceted. Self-education, further vocational training, participation in conferences, career growth, etc. can help. Psychological testing of government employees and comparative analysis of the obtained results by groups; statistical processing of the obtained results. The study uses the method for diagnosing the emotional burnout level by V.V. Boyko. The experimental groups in the study are formed by 35 government employees who used to hold managerial positions (over 10 years of experience in civil service). The results of the study broaden the understanding of the place of emotional burnout syndrome in the professional activity of government employees. The features and mechanisms lying at the basis of the emergence and development of emotional burnout syndrome in civil servants are described. Ensuring government employees’ effectiveness in their duties calls for conducting a set of measures to reduce emotional burnout: optimization of the organization of activities, a favorable social and psychological climate in the team, and organized work of the psychological service. In the process of selection and training of government employees, it appears reasonable to pay attention to the individual characteristics preventing professional deformation and promote the development of the personal ability to withstand stressors (self-efficacy, confidence in the level of one’s professionalism, developed success goals; tolerance for difficulties and unpredictable situations; self-respect, an adequate level of self-esteem; resilience, the ability to manage professional affairs; the development of individual strategies for coping with stress, etc.).

Background: Burnout is a state of vital exhaustion that has a high global prevalence among dental professionals. Yet the early diagnosis of this syndrome is challenging due to its multidimensional nature. Aim: To assess burnout and its relation to emotional dysregulation and social cognition among undergraduate dental students. Methods: We mailed 148 self-administered questionnaires to all interns and undergraduate dental students belonging to the College of Dentistry’s female campus at King Khalid University, Saudi Arabia. A questionnaire was designed comprising three measuring instruments of psychological inventories to assess work-related stress, namely, burnout (Copenhagen burnout inventory questionnaire (CBI)), emotional dysregulation (emotion regulation questionnaire (ERQ)), and social cognition (interpersonal reactivity index (IRI)). We examined the difference in burnout between two cohorts (interns and undergraduates) using Student’s ‘t’ test and the association between emotional regulation/social cognition domains using Pearson’s correlation. Results: Among the participants, around 70% obtained higher scores than the cut-off points for personal and work-related domains in both groups. There was no statistically significant difference in burnout domain between the two cohorts (p > 0.05; Cohen d < 0.3). A negative correlation existed between burnout and emotion regulation, i.e., higher burnout score is associated with lesser cognitive reappraisal and more expressive suppression (CBI—personal burnout r = −0.251; r = −0.220 respectively). Social cognitive scores had various associations among interns and undergraduates, with personal distress being significantly associated with greater burnout levels among both groups (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The present study revealed significantly elevated burnout levels among both interns and undergraduate students. Emotional dysfunction and social cognition assessment can be a valuable adjunct in identifying this erosive syndrome. Early recognition and primordial prevention targeting burnout are strongly recommended.

The research instruments used were the Cuestionario para la Evaluación del Síndrome de Quemarse por el Trabajo (Job Burnout Syndrome Assessment Questionnaire); the Psychosocial Risk Assessment Battery, the COPE Inventory - scale to assess coping strategies; the Emotional Labor Scale, and a questionnaire for the assessment of sociodemographic and labor variables. Multiple Linear Regression analysis results indicate that the predictors with the greatest explanatory power of the Burnout dimensions were overwork and emotion-focused coping strategies. The predictive model reveals that the risks of developing Burnout arise from the correlation between personal and work-related variables.

IntroductionThis is the first comprehensive evaluation of Burnout Syndrome across the UK Intensive Care Unit workforce and in all three Burnout Syndrome domains: Emotional Exhaustion, Depersonalisation and lack of Personal Accomplishment.MethodsA questionnaire was emailed to UK Intensive Care Society members, incorporating the 22-item Maslach Burnout Inventory Human Services Survey for medical personnel. Burnout Syndrome domain scores were stratified by ‘risk’. Associations with gender, profession and age-group were explored.ResultsIn total, 996 multi-disciplinary responses were analysed. For Emotional Exhaustion, females scored higher and nurses scored higher than doctors. For Depersonalisation, males and younger respondents scored higher.ConclusionApproximately one-third of Intensive Care Unit team-members are at ‘high-risk’ for Burnout Syndrome, though there are important differences according to domain, gender, age-group and profession. This data may encourage a more nuanced understanding of Burnout Syndrome and more personalised strategies for our heterogeneous workforce.

The burnout syndrome is a response to a long term chronic emotional and interpersonal stressors that are related to workplace. It emerges as the consequence of non-harmonized relations between employees on one, and working environment on the other side. It is defined as chronic work stress that includes three dimensions: the sense of the emotional exhaustion, the negative approach to providing services (depersonalization) and the sense of reduced personal accomplishment. It occurs most often in persons who work in direct contact with other people. Medicine is one of the professions at the greatest risk of suffering from burnout syndrome. The results of the studies conducted in the neighbouring countries, in Europe and in the world showed a big prevalence of burnout syndrome among medical workers, especially in physicians. The acquired results indicate that there is a need to undertake measures for prevention of the burnout syndrome.

A great number of highly qualified doctors and healthcare professionals are subject to emotional burnout. Implementation of measures aimed at developing resistance to emotional and psychological stress in the course of activities of healthcare workers will prevent "burnout syndrome". Introduction of psychological sessions of autogenic training, relaxation and self-regulation of the mental state can be used as part of corporate health measures in the workplace and can quickly restore performance, which helps prevent the syndrome of emotional burnout in healthcare workers.

Introduction. The Burnout syndrom is a health issue that greatly disables a person. It includes emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and reduced efficiency in the workplace. So far, this issue has not been addressed where medical staff is concerned. Methods. The Maslach Burnout Inventory - Human Service Survey and Demografic Questionnaire were used. Emotional exhaustion is taken to be the most important aspect of the syndrome. Results. The sample consisted of data acquired from 59 nurses/technicians, out of which 45 were female and 14 male. 12% of them possessed all of the characteristics belonging to the syndrome, 27% of them were overextended (whereby the majority of them were inefficient), while the additional 10% were ineffective. There was a correlation between the chronic disease, on the one hand, and emotional exhaustion (p<0.000) and average ranks of exhaustion scale, on the other hand (p=0.006). Furthermore, there was a significant correlation between reduced efficiency in the workplace and chronic problems (p=0.006). Conclusion. The Burnout syndrome is a multidimensional issue. The method of perceiving the measured dimensions influence the obtained results. The data have shown that the majority of the respondents have some kind of problem concerning their job (burnout, being overextended or ineffective). Significant correlation between chronic disesases and emotional exhaustion underlines the need for further research to benefit the medical staff, as well as health system.

Introduction: Work in the field of healthcare is accompanied by considerable emotional tension. Pharmacists are at risk of professional burnout, but so far, there is very little scientific research in this professional group in Bulgaria. Objective: To study the presence of Burnout Syndrome among Bulgarian pharmacists and perform an analysis according to the demographic characteristics of respondents. Material and Methods: A pilot study was conducted for the presence of Burnout Syndrome among 142 pharmacists in Varna, Bulgaria, working in different areas of the pharmaceutical sector: pharmacies for public services, hospital pharmacies, pharmaceutical companies, higher education institution. The information was collected using an anonymous questionnaire that included the specialized Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) tool to examine professional burnout according to three subscales: emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation and personal accomplishment. Results: Higher levels of emotional exhaustion and depersonalisation were found in male respondents in comparison to women, while the values between the two genders were almost similar according to the professional achievement subscale. The most vulnerable group was the male group at the age of 31-40. Pharmacists over the age of 50 had lower levels of burnout as they had developed good habits to deal with stress. Conclusion: Gaining professional experience in pharmacists is associated with an increase in the levels of professional burnout. High levels of depersonalisation are a prerequisite for worse quality of pharmaceutical care.

Currently, the characteristics of the emergence and course of burnout syndrome among medical staff working with cancer children are not studied enough. It seems relevant to consider the psychological features of oncological medical specialists as an important personal factor, a protector of burnout syndrome. The features (empathetic tendencies, personal and situational anxiety, neurotization, self-actualization) in health care professionals working with cancer children were investigated. The object of the study was medical workers specializing in the field of oncology (doctors: radiologists, chemotherapists, hematologists, coloproctologists, hepatologists, pediatric oncologists, transfusiologists, etc.) with various experience. Research base was R. M. Gorbacheva Research Institute of Pediatric Oncology, Hematology and Transplantology, St. Petersburg. The study revealed the interconnection between the level of emotional burnout syndrome and levels of empathy tendencies, neurotization and anxiety of medical professionals: health workers with a high degree of empathy have less predisposition to burnout. The interconnection between the expression of emotional burnout syndrome and the self-actualization of personality of medical professionals was also revealed: the lower level of self-actualization the doctors have, the more inklined to emotional burnout they are.

Burnout syndrome is conceptualized as a particular type of distress mainly occurring among healthcare providers. Burnout syndrome has been shown to identify a serious and spe-cific problem in providing care for HIV-positive patients, in this context health professionals are very sensitive to burnout syndrome not only because of the specific patients' physical needs, but also because of other factors such as HIV-related discrimination, stigma, sexuality, intellectual disability, drugs and fear of HIV contagion during health professionals medical practice. Research studies have often focused on burnout syndrome, coping strategies and psychological and physical health in health professionals employed in the health system show-ing that coping strategies significantly predict burnout syndrome. Despite these premises, no previous study explored the possible role of burnout syndrome in mediating the relationship between coping strategies and mental health in health professionals. A sample of 85 health professionals working in HIV/AIDS units of two Italian hospitals were enrolled in this study. The results showed that emotional exhaustion is a partial mediator of the relationship between emotional coping and mental health status; so, we can assume that structured interventions aimed to improving both emotional coping and burnout syndrome could improve mental health status. All these results underline the importance of health promotion and disease prevention initiatives for health professionals.
