This thesis is concerned with computational methods for alignment and score-informed transcription of piano music. Firstly, several methods are proposed to improve the alignment robustness and accuracywhen various versions of one piece of music showcomplex differences with respect to acoustic conditions or musical interpretation. Secondly, score to performance alignment is applied to enable score-informed transcription. Although music alignment methods have considerably improved in accuracy in recent years, the task remains challenging. The research in this thesis aims to improve the robustness for some cases where there are substantial differences between versions and state-of-the-art methods may fail in identifying a correct alignment. This thesis first exploits the availability of multiple versions of the piece to be aligned. By processing these jointly, the alignment process can be stabilised by exploiting additional examples of how a section might be interpreted or which acoustic conditions may arise. Two methods are proposed, progressive alignment and profile HMM, both adapted from the multiple biological sequence alignment task. Experiments demonstrate that these methods can indeed improve the alignment accuracy and robustness over comparable pairwise methods. Secondly, this thesis presents a score to performance alignment method that can improve the robustness in cases where some musical voices, such as the melody, are played asynchronously to others - a stylistic device used in musical expression. The asynchronies between the melody and the accompaniment are handled by treating the voices as separate timelines in a multi-dimensional variant of dynamic time warping (DTW). The method measurably improves the alignment accuracy for pieces with asynchronous voices and preserves the accuracy otherwise. Once an accurate alignment between a score and an audio recording is available, the score information can be exploited as prior knowledge in automatic music transcription (AMT), for scenarios where score is available, such as music tutoring. Score-informed dictionary learning is used to learn the spectral pattern of each pitch that describes the energy distribution of the associated notes in the recording. More precisely, the dictionary learning process in non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) is constrained using the aligned score. This way, by adapting the dictionary to a given recording, the proposed method improves the accuracy over the state-of-the-art.

In this analysis, we use National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey data to investigate whether the adoption of the ambulatory electronic health records (EHR) system is associated with changes in patient-specific health education prescription rates, patient-physician interaction time, and returned appointment rates. We estimate the treatment effect of EHR adoption with multinomial propensity score weighting adjusted regressions. We find evidence to suggest that full EHR adoption positively affects patient-specific health education prescription rates. We find no robust evidence to show a significant effect of the EHR system on time utilization or returned appointment rates. We discuss possible reasons for our findings. We recommend linking patient education with quality improvement efforts and improving the usability of EHR systems.

In Chapters 1 and 2 there are definitions and a review of electroacoustic music, and then visualization generally and as applied to music. Chapter 3 is a review of specific and relevant literature as regards to the visualization of electroacoustic music. Chapter 4 introduces the concepts of imagining as opposed to discovering new sound, and what is important to this research about these terms; in addition what is meant and indicated by them. Chapter 5 deals with the responses that composers currently working have made to the enquiry concerning visualization. In this chapter these responses are dealt with as case studies. In a similar way, Chapter 6 looks at some examples of historical work in electroacoustic music, again as case studies. In Chapter 7 a taxonomical structure for the use of visualization in electroacoustic composition is established and derived from the case study results. Chapter 8 looks at relevant examples of software and how they offer visualization case studies. Chapter 9 looks at the place of the archive in various stages of the compositional process. Chapter 10 investigates the problems of visualizing musical timbre as possible evidence for future strategies. Chapter 11 offers some conclusions and implications as to the main research questions, as well as more specific outlines of potential strategies for the visualization of electroacoustic music.

In this thesis, the impact of packet losses on the quality of received videos sent across a network that exhibit normal network perturbations such as jitters, delays, packet drops etc has been examined. Dynamic behavior of a normal network has been simulated using Linux and the Network Emulator (NetEm). Peoples’ perceptions on the quality of the received video were used in rating the qualities of several videos with differing speeds. In accordance with ITU’s guideline of using Mean Opinion Scores (MOS), the effects of packet drops were analyzed. Excel and Matlab were used as tools in analyzing the peoples’ opinions which indicates the impacts that different loss rates has on the transmitted videos. Statistical methods used for evaluation of data are mean and variance. We conclude that people have convergence of opinions when losses become extremely high on videos with highly variable scene changes

Before market authorization of new medicines, their efficacy and safety are evaluated using randomized controlled trials. While there is no doubt about the scientific value of randomized trials, they are usually conducted in selected populations with questionable generalizability to routine care.  In the digital data revolution era, with healthcare data growing at an unprecedented rate, drug monitoring in routine care is still highly under-utilized. Although many countries have access to data on prescription drugs at the individual level in ambulatory care, such data are often missing for hospitals. This is a growing problem considering the clear trend towards more new and expensive drugs administered in the hospital setting. The aim of this thesis was therefore to develop methods for extracting data on drug use from a hospital-based electronic health record system and further to build and evaluate models for real-time monitoring of effectiveness and safety of new drugs in routine care using data from electronic health records and regional and national health care registers. Using the developed techniques, we were able to demonstrate drug use and health service utilization for inflammatory bowel disease and to evaluate the comparative effectiveness and safety of antiarrhythmic drugs. With a rapidly evolving drug development, it is important to optimize the evaluation of effectiveness, safety and health economic value of new medicines in routine care. We believe that the models described in this thesis could contribute to fulfil this need.

In this master dissertation, I have created music for three different musical contexts; electronic pop in collaboration with a program colleague from KMH, short film music in collaboration with film director and finally music to statistics in collaboration with Statistics Sweden (SCB. The three sub-projects move within different musical expressions and have different instrumentation. An issue that is central in the reflections of the text is what similarities in terms of expression and processes the three different works have, although they have different aesthetic frameworks. The work aims to find out how the different directions affect and influence me as a music creator. Can you see what the flow of influences looks like? Furthermore, I discuss different conceptions of working as an individual music creator in different directions and media expressions. The method has consisted of composition work, improvisation, music production and studio recordings. The result of the work is three different pieces of music, two of which; short-film music and music for statistics, is a kind of commissioned work with the goal of being played in the public culture.

Transfigurations is a symphonic work in one movement for orchestra and live computer processing utilizing the graphical audio programming language Pure Data. The score and patch for this piece are accompanied by an essay describing the audio processing techniques and the compositional processes employed in this work. Programming methods discussed include strategies for data capture, patch structure, user interface, and processor management. All audio processing in the work is realized in realtime. These sounds are derived directly from the orchestra in performance, except for the last. The processes involved in Transfigurations include pitch and amplitude tracking, pitch-shifting, filtering, frequency and amplitude modulation, granular synthesis, delay, and convolution. The final sounds from the computer employ stochastic processes for synthesis which are derived from the germinal materials of the piece. The essay also discusses the aesthetic philosophy and formal structure of the work, principle themes and motives, and formative pitch materials, as well as the compositional processes in each section. The final discourse of the essay considers microphone and loudspeaker setups, patch preparation and leveling, and strategies for rehearsal and performance.

Soar! is a musical composition written for wind ensemble and computer music. The total duration of the work is approximately 10 minutes. Flocking behavior of migratory birds serves as the most prominent influence on the imagery and local structure of the composition. The cyclical nature of the birds' journey inspires palindromic designs in the temporal domain. Aesthetically, Soar! portrays the fluid shapes of the flocks with numerous grains in the sounds. This effect is achieved by giving individual parts high degree of independence, especially in regards to rhythm. Technically, Soar! explores various interactions among instrumental lines in a wind ensemble, constructs overarching symmetrical structures, and integrates a large ensemble with computer music. The conductor acts as the leader at several improvisational moments in Soar! The use of conductor-initiated musical events in the piece can be traced back through the historic lineage of aleatoric compositions since the middle of the twentieth century. [Score is on p. 54-92.]

"The computer generated sounds on tape form a large body in which instrumental sounds float and from which they appear, like weeds oscillating on a sometimes calm and often turbulent sea of sound.
'You're afraid, in the mirror, of the sea, in front of, you're afraid ... ' and 'searching, for a common pulse, to sustain, to carry on, searching ... ' are circular phrases in the text which reflect elements of both doubt and courage. Mourning that which can never return. Celebrating that which will always be with us."

Music notation represents what a composer creates. This research is concerned with the problem of compression, without distortion, of complete scores of musical pieces. The musical score source has many interesting characteristics which set it apart from other information sources; for example, it is a collection of parallel 'parts'; the durations of symbols (notes) are variable; and the transitions between notes in different parts need not be simultaneous. These distinguishing features are discussed and incorporated into the procedure described in this work. The research consists of three parts. The first is the design of a representation system allowing musical scores to be stored on digital media. The second is the development of a simple music editor and the compilation of two pieces of music. The third is the design and implementation of a compression algorithm. Significantly higher compression ratios are achieved using the designed algorithm vis-a-vis those achieved using a standard general data compression algorithm.

This study examined the effect of being raised in one-parent and two parent family structures on the academic achievement of students by looking at the test scores of their standardized composite math/reading tests. The study also looks for the possible influence of gender/race and structural factors like socioeconomic status, school‟s geographic location, and economic resources on the test scores of students. Using a sample of students raised in biological one-parent and two-parent family structures from the Educational Longitudinal Survey 2002 dataset, cross-sex theory, resources theory and interpersonal theory have been used to explain the effect for both the full sample and for father-headed one-parent families and mother-headed one-parent families. The research found no significant gender effect on the test scores of students, however, the research result found strong impact for race and socioeconomic status on achievement. Family structure showed moderate effects. Students raised in two-parent families outperform students raised in one-parent families. However, the research findings indicated that socioeconomic status and race are stronger predictors of test scores than family structure.

The works in this portfolio of original compositions cover a wide spectrum of genres, styles, approaches, and musical techniques. The aim was to demonstrate mastery of the various musical languages and techniques characteristic of each genre. The calculatedly low-fi 'alt.rock meets computer games' approach of the concept album They No Longer Sleep Alone is of folk-like simplicity, deliberately eschewing the various polishing processes available to producers now in the digital mastering situation. The intention was to preserve a naturalness of sound and song making. On the other hand, live electronic effects are utilized to expand the sonorities and textures obtained from a solo bassoon in The Effect of Bundled Sticks on Sounds. Today is the Tomorrow takes this idea further, being a completely electronic work mixing live musical performance (turntables) with pre-recorded sounds, these interacting with live video and prepared animation. De Feo, inspired by graffiti artists, was written for a virtuoso pair of performers in the unusual combination of alto saxophone and viola, with no electronics being required. The Big Fat Jazz Bastard Theme Song and Espacio were written for particular performers and approaches to music making, while Saturday Afternoon and Late Night Specials are film scores. Swamp Treasures and Bungamucka - the Alarmist were commissioned for theatrical productions and thus were designed to fulfil specific functions determined by the stage directors. By way of contrast, ...seconds unwind...generated noise...racecar... is an abstract work that utilizes the sophistication and subtleties of timbre, rhythm and texture available from a professional chamber orchestra.

With the advent of computers, new avenues of compositional and sound research have opened up. But if we have seen witnessing for years a plethora of sound generators and new synthesis techniques, there are few proposals for tools that address the control and formal construction of electronic music at several levels and that allow a fine integration of electronic writing. The work initiated in this thesis aims to develop, in the context of interactive mixed electroacoustic and audiovisual music in real time, a notion of centralised electronic score allowing within the same environment the definition, composition and general control of all electronic processes, their interactions and their synchronisations with musical, gestural and visual events. Using new, more expressive languages for writing electronics such as Antescofo and powerful synthesis and signal processing systems such as SuperCollider, this work has resulted in the development of a dedicated library: AntesCollider. This library allows to experiment with new approaches to the writing of electronics through the organisation and composition of sound structures, multitemporal, multiscale and interaction. By taking advantage of the computer notions of agents, processes and real-time algorithms, these sound structures can be combined dynamically and polyphonically in relation to external events, opening up new compositional paradigms and renewing the freedom and plasticity of musical creation

This study attempts to identify the variables that affect test scores in high school students. Using the Educational Longitudinal Survey, 2002, variables included in the Conceptual Model (Student Role Performance, School, Family and Peers) are examined to see the overall and individual affects on students' test scores. Univariate and bivariate analysis was performed as well as an ordinary least squares regression analysis for the independent variables on test scores. Deviance was found to lower test scores in students but socio-economic status of the students' family was found to have the largest impact on test scores. The student role performance model component was found to impact test scores the greatest out of the four model components.

This paper presents the history and the theoretical study of mixed music and focuses on two piano solo works and two mixed electroacoustic compositions for piano and electronics. By discussing the working process and giving the analysis of the original composition Alchemy for piano and electronics, this paper investigates the relationship between cause, source and spectromorphology, reflecting how the concept of energy-motion trajectory are embodied in this mixed electroacoustic work. Alchemy is a mixed composition for piano solo and 8-channel fixed electronics focusing on the gestural play and sonic expression. The live piano part explores the gestural sound played with a slide (cup), paper clip, and objects placed inside the piano. The 8-channel electronics part is mainly derived from the recorded acoustic piano. It extends the sonic potential of source materials and presents the diverse vectorial movements of spatialization.

The day 1998 Nobel Prize recipient Walter Kohn wrote his first article on Density Functional Theory, he could never have predicted its eventual impact on computational materials science. Almost 50 years after his original article, the field has seen tremendous improvement both in computer hardware and in software algorithms, and the resulting combination of an elegant theory and truly predictive power has enabled accurate, reliable simulation of relevant materials properties. But the story does not end here. Density Functional Theory still needs major improvements in at least two directions to really add the power of ab-initio quantum mechanics to the toolbox of materials engineers. The first direction aims at improving the accuracy of predicted materials properties, while the second aims at improving the scope of firstprinciples predictions. In this work, an attempt to push the field forward in each of the directions outlined above is set forth. A novel scheme that drastically reduces self-interaction errors in Density Functional Theory, and re-establish physical meaning in Kohn-Sham orbital energies is presented. The accuracy of the newly developed functional is shown to remedy a lot of the known deficiencies of local and semi-local functionals, while preserving their intrinsic qualities on established properties. A second key contribution from this work has been the development of a set of robust and efficient algorithms for large scale quantum transport calculations within Density Functional Theory combined with the Non-Equilibrium Green's Function formalism. Emphasis on user-friendliness was an underlying motivation throughout the implementation phase into the Wannier90 code. Systems with sizes up to two orders of magnitude larger than what DFT can currently deal with can now routinely be investigated. The automation of the whole process also opens up the possibility for high-throughput quantum conductance calculations with potential usefulness in the field of nanoelectronics.

Every student goes to school; every student takes standardized tests. This research project addresses whether or not being involved in high school athletics can affect test scores. The data is from the Educational Longitudinal Study (2003). Analyses were done in order to see if there is a difference in the relationship between test scores of students that participated in sports compared to those who did not. The overall finding is that participation in sports increased test scores. Students who were involved in sports on average scored .50 points higher on standardized tests. Students who spent more time watching TV or playing video games decreased their test score by .13. Characteristics of the school were also variables. The higher the percentage of students on the free lunch program at the school, the lower the individual student’s score. Family influences that were tested were such things as the socioeconomic status of the family and the number of siblings the student had. The higher the socioeconomic status the higher the test scores. The more siblings a student has the lower the scores. The peer level factors that were tested were if the student had friends who dropped out of school and if school was important to peers. The results showed if a student had friends who dropped out of school they scored 1.99 points lower on standardized test. Students who had peers that felt school was important tended to score .55 points higher.

Two English I classes in an urban high school completed surveys that focused on a student’s attitude toward recreational and school reading. The Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) provided the two English I classes a lexile score. Class A practiced SSR three days a week, while Class B did not. After the research period of twelve weeks, the two English I classes were given post-surveys similar to the pre-surveys and the SRI. The post-surveys from Class A were compared to the post-surveys from Class B. The post-SRI scores of Class A were compared to the post-SRI scores of Class B. Any changes or shifts in student attitude were measured. The hypothesis was found plausible. Significant differences were found in both the survey and SRI data. Class A had higher SRI scores than Class B. Additionally Class A had a better overall attitude toward reading than Class B.

The focal point of the work is the turntable and DJ (or Disk Jockey; one who controls the turntables). This concept not only manifests itself through the utilization of actual turntables, but also much of the acoustic material performed by the ensemble consists of "metaphoric turntables". These are contrasting layers of sound superposed over one another that are played by small groups of specific instruments within the larger ensemble. These instrumental groups simulate the sonorities generated through turntable manipulation such as warping, oscillations, crossfading, transforming, and numerous scratching techniques. The DJ (sometimes referred to as a turntablist) employs many techniques, articulations, and effects that are notated and explained in the accompanying analysis.

Territorios is a 15-minute composition for eight percussionists and prerecorded sounds on digital tape. The composer chose this particular instrumentation because of his conviction that percussion and electronic/digital instruments are the most powerful sources of fresh and innovative sound matter that have appeared during this century. This choice also allowed him to challenge the development of a new and consistent rhythmic syntax derived from the internal structure of percussion instruments, which in turn made it possible to establish solid ties between the sound itself and the musical syntax that rules its organization.
Since different tempi are often used simultaneously in Territorios, the performance of the piece requires a set of computer-generated click-tracks carrying individual pulse lines; hearing these pulses through headphones, the performers are able to play the piece in precise tempo.

Balbuzard is a musical composition of approximately twelve minutes in length, scored for solo clarinet, wind symphony and electronics. It focuses on cluster-like sound masses and explores ways of using these to give the music a clear sense of direction. To this end, tools were developed using a variety of computer applications or programming languages, such as Lisp, OpenMusic and Cubase. These tools made possible a kind of graphic composition where diagrams of different shapes were entered into a computer interface and converted into source material. The generated source material consisted of several rhythmic strata whose pitches, mainly part of diatonic, octatonic or chromatic collections, followed the contour of the entered shape. With this visual process, it was also possible to explore the creation of contrapuntal textures by entering diagrams of lines representing the path of each contrapuntal voice.*

This dissertation describes a compositional model rooted in cross-influential methodology between complementary musical compositions that share generative source material. In their simultaneous construction, two composition pairs presented challenges that influenced and mediated the other's development with respect to timbre, transposition, pitch material, effects processing, and form. A working prototype first provides a model that is later developed. The first work Thema is for piano alone, and the companion piece Am3ht is for piano and live computer processing via the graphical programming environment Max/MSP. Compositional processes used in the prototype solidify the cross-influential model, demanding flexibility and a dialectic approach. Ideas set forth in the prototype are then explored through a second pair of compositions rooted in cross-influential methodology. The first work Lusmore is scored for solo contrabass and Max/MSP. The second composition Knockgrafton is scored for string orchestra. The flexibility of the cross-influential model is revealed more fully through a discussion of each work's musical development. The utility of the cross-influential compositional model is discussed, particularly within higher academia.

Three Ideas is a collection of three one-act (musical) plays intended to be performed either as a series or as separate pieces. In order for them to be performable in either of those ways, they need some sort of unifying fabric running throughout the collection, yet they must remain individually strong enough to stand alone outside the context of the series and still seem complete. The concepts Tonal and Nagual, Bell's Theorem, and Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind were chosen because of their theatrical possibilities as well as their philosophical implications. All three of the concepts deal with an unknown, or at least unseen, force that has a strong influence (possibly control) over our actions and the actions of objects around us. This force could possibly radiate from within ourselves, or it could be completely outside us.

Echoes is an interactive composition for amplified chamber ensemble and computer. The entire research that led to this piece was based on the exploration of the evolution of the sound produced initially by the acoustic instruments and then interpreted by the computer. Why "Echoes"?
As a sonic phenomenon the echo has several fairly distinct dimensions. These are commonly understood to include the following: the repetition of a sound by reflection of sound waves from a surface; any repetition or imitation of words, style or ideas; the sympathetic sound response; and, in music, a soft repetition of a phrase. Note that these standard definitions include the figurative dimensions, as in the 'imitation of style or ideas.' This is no coincidence, since I am very much intrigued by the idea of a computer first imitating the actual instrument and then expanding that instrument's possibilities far beyond its timbre.

The Crying Wave is a twenty minute music composition for an amplified ensemble of fifteen instruments combined with a prerecorded electroacoustic audio component and live signal processing. The composition explores the use of fundamental electroacoustic music techniques such as additive, subtractive, and granular synthesis as models for the creation and manipulation of materials and structure in both the instrumental and electroacoustic aspects of the work. Two series of harmonies underlie the piece and serve as both harmonic and melodic resources. Procedures including additive/subtractive durations, palindrome and canon, the Fibonacci series, and antiphonal alternation of instrumental groups are used throughout the composition to provide structural coherence. The MIDI data processing software Max is employed to control a number of aspects of the work during performance, including playback of prerecorded electroacoustic audio segments on compact disc, changes of effects algorithms for digital signal processing modules, and the generation of a click track for synchronization. The following dissertation presents an analysis of the work in terms of the aforementioned concepts and techniques.

Introduction and background: The use of Electronic Health Records (EHRs) sometimes referred to as Electronic Patient Care Records (ePCRs) amongst health and social care providers is increasing.  Many countries are anticipating the benefits of maintaining patients’ records in one place to facilitate real time access by clinicians and other health and social care providers at the point of need; thereby saving resources, seeking to work more efficiently and indeed taking advantage of the rapid advancement in technology to enhance communication.   Objectives:  Investigate challenges facing implementation of England’s EHRs programme by reviewing two design research approaches. Link the findings to possible barriers to augmenting the scope of the use of EHRs in the pre-hospital care at the Ambulance Service under study.   Approach and Methodology:  Literature review on design approaches to rolling out EHRs systems of 4 countries. Followed by an examination available information on England’s EHRs implementation programme whilst considering the findings to draw out any similarities and differences with each of the countries examined. Follow-on enquiry through interviews whose results help draw relationships between success and design/implementation methodologies. In this systematic review, several article sources are used, including ERIC, IEEE Xplore, ACM Digital Library, Google Scholar and Springer Link. Examples of cases are selected after reading titles and abstracts to decide whether the articles are peer reviewed, and relevant to the subject of enquiry. In addition, for articles to be selected they have had to meet the following criteria, a) written in English, b) full text is available online, c) had to have had primary empirical data, and d) focused on EHR implementation programmes.  Iinterviews are carried out to gather first hand data for review, analysis and evaluation, to inductively make an end point explanation of patterns in EHRs implementation programmes.   Findings:  Of the examples of EHRs systems across Europe and North America reviewed, independent and dependent variables closest to the research questions and hypotheses are identified, narrowing them down to design and implementation approaches to make probable causal link to implementation of EHRs system in England in general and the Ambulance Service in particular.   Conclusion: A connection with England’s EHRs implementation programme is made as the study alludes success to user driven bespoke solution as opposed to technology engineered systems. The study concludes that the design approach adopted by a country plays a significant role in gaining ‘buy-in’ when implementing EHRs systems. Subsequently recommendations are made to explore participatory design as a key promoter to ensure uptake of EHRs systems across main stakeholder groups whilst making a specific case for augmenting the scope of using ePCRs at  the Ambulance Service provider in England. Furthermore, the conclusions deduce direct correlation to rollout progress and appetite for using EHRs in healthcare generally and could in theory influence behavior and attitudes that could foster acceptance and improve chances of successful implementation of ePCRs programme in England in general and the Ambulance Service under study.        Keywords: Electronic Health Records (EHRs), Electronic Patient Care Records (ePCRs), Design Approach, Ambulance Service (Pre-Hospital Care), Design Approach

Fractus I is a composition for trumpet in C and live electronic sound. The electronics were primarily created using SuperCollider, an environment and programming language for real time audio synthesis. This project investigates SuperCollider's pattern and task functionality as a means of supporting and enriching the compositional process. Fractus I develops several different code architectures in order to randomize as well as synchronize various musical elements. The piece exploits SuperCollider as both an audio synthesis tool and a performance conduit. Additionally, the nature of SuperCollider's patterns and tasks influences the form and content of the composition. The project underscores SuperCollider as a powerful, versatile and open-ended tool for musical composition and examines future directions and improvements.

Annotation:
In the first half of the twentieth century, sporadic attempts of avant-garde composers to include sounds other than pitch in musical composition paved the way for the composers in the second half to embrace the sound of all types in their creative works. The development of technology since the mid-past century has facilitated composers' inclusive use of sound. The recent achievements in electronics and computers have led to cost-effective tools for today's composers to explore new possibilities in sound design and manipulation. Gradual for tenor saxophone and fixed electronics is primarily concerned with noise. Among the infinite possibilities of noise types, metallic sounds significantly contribute to the composition. The title of the piece refers to the compositional process in which the music progressively unfolds itself from the beginning to the end. The methods and strategies used to present the content give rise to a form I call accretion, described as an organic process by which the musical materials grow. Within the process, while established materials are interacting, combining, and forming layers, new materials may be incorporated and take part in the process. Throughout the composition, the interaction between sounds with common properties guides the music toward interactive unity, while the interplay between sounds with different characteristics forms a dialectical communication. The constant push-and-pull between the two states creates a restless tension throughout the composition. In the current version of Gradual, the audio signals from both saxophone and fixed electronics are transmitted to the same speakers, which helps coalesce acoustic and electronic sounds. The future prospect of the piece can involve real-time audio signal processing to manipulate the sound of saxophone. Adding the above feature to the current version will promote the unification of the two media into a single whole.
