The process of creating computer-based music is increasingly being conceived in terms of complex chains of mediations involving composer/performer and computer software interactions that prompt us to reconsider notions of materiality within the context of digital cultures. Recent scholarship has offered particularly useful re-evaluations of computer music software in relation to musical instrumentality. In this article, we contend that given the ubiquitous presence of computer units within contemporary musical practices, it is not simply music software that needs to be reframed as musical instruments, but rather the diverse material strata of machines identified as computers that need to be thought of as instruments within music environments. Specifically, we argue that computers, regardless of their technical specifications, are not only ‘black boxes’ or ‘meta-tools’ that serve to control music software, but are also material objects that are increasingly being used in a wide range of musical and sound art practices according to an ‘analog’ rather than ‘digital’ logic. Through a series of examples implicating both soft and hard dimensions of what constitutes computers, we provide a preliminary survey of practices calling for the need to rethink the conceptual divide between analog and digital forms of creativity and aesthetics.

Introduction: Given the increasing use of electronic devices, and the increasing number of complaints with its use, we intend to evaluate the prevalence of manifestations of dry eye and ocular fatigue in a population of individuals, who use the computer daily to perform all their professional tasks, as well as to correlate these complaints with the number of hours of digital use as well as their possible improvement with behavioural measures and use of tear drops.Material and Methods: A total of 77 individuals (154 eyes) were evaluated on two separate days with a 1-month interval. They completed two questionnaires: OSDI and PEG Eye Fatigue. An objective ocular surface assessment was performed: Schirmer test without anesthetic, DR-1a Dry Eye Monitor™, hyperemia evaluation, lacrimal break up, presence of keratitis and lesions in the conjunctiva, as well as near accommodation point and near convergence point. After the first evaluation, the subjects were divided into two groups: group A (< 2 hours of computer working) and group B (> 2 hours of computer working). Some environmental measures to reduce complaints and recommendation of use of artificial tears were explained to the latter. Results: There was a statistically significant difference in the majority of the parameters evaluated in the group B, in relation to the morning period (group A) - tear film (p = 0.032), hyperemia (p < 0.001), BUT (p < 0.001), keratitis (p < 0.001), conjunctival lesion (p = 0.002) and accommodation point (p < 0.001). In the evaluation – one month later - there were no statistically significant differences in any of the parameters analysed in the group A, and in group B there was a decrease in most parameters at the end of that period - Schirmer test (p = 0.005), lacrimal film (p = 0.022), keratitis (p < 0.001), conjunctival lesion (p = 0.005) and fatigue score (p < 0.001).Discussion: It was thus possible to show the appearance of ocular fatigue and ocular surface changes with prolonged use of computers (> 2 hours) as well as a significant improvement in symptomatology (subjective assessment) as well as of ocular surface changes (objective evaluation) with the implementation of postural measures, regular breaks and use of lubricants. This is the first study, to the best of our knowledge, of digital asthenopia in which, in addition to the subjective evaluation, the presence of ocular surface modifications (objective assessment) were evaluated and the respective improvement with the aforementioned ergophthalmological measures were evaluated. Conclusion: This survey highlights the increased overall level of awareness that we need to have to face the rapid and wide-scale changes driven by the emergence of digital technology and, more particularly, its impact on user’s vision and posture. We concluded that the longer we use the electronic devices (more than two hours) the more severe the complaints and rates of ocular surface changes are. Environmental and ocular strategies can attenuate or even eliminate the discomfort caused by this syndrome, and increase professional performance and quality of life.

Computers and photography has had a long and complicated relationship throughout the years. As image processing and manipulating capabilities advanced on the computer front, photography re-birthed itself with digital cameras and digital imaging techniques. Development of interconnected social sharing networks like Instagram and Twitter feeds the photographers’/users’ thirst to show off their momentaneous “been there/seen that – capture the moment/share the moment” instincts. One other unlikely front emerged as an image processing power of the consumer electronics improved is “video game worlds” in which telematic travellers may shoot photographs in constructed fantasy worlds as if travelling in real life. While life-like graphics manufactured by the computers raise questions about authenticity and truthfulness of the image, the possible future of the photography as socially efficient visual knowledge is in constant flux. This article aims to reflect on today’s trends in in-game photography and tries to foresee how this emerging genre and its constructed realities will transpose the old with the new photographic data in the post-truth condition fostering for re-evaluation of photography truth-value. The development of information technology, along with its indisputable advantages, has brought to our lives a number of negative phenomena related to the illegal use of computers and telecommunications. However, the issue of using digital information as evidence in the criminal procedural legislation of Ukraine remains almost unsettled, in particular, the place of digital evidence in the system of procedural sources of evidence (digital evidence is difficult to unambiguously attribute to material evidence or documents) remains unclear. Criminal proceedings raise problems regarding the correct assessment of digital (electronic) evidence for their identity and admissibility, which certainly does not contribute to the effective use of digital technologies and sources of information in national proceedings. The purpose of the article is to research the problematic issues of determining the appropriateness and admissibility of digital (electronic) evidence during criminal proceedings, as well as to identify and disclose individual principles for their proper procedural evaluation. The research deals with the current state of theoretical studies of the issue of the appropriateness and admissibility of digital evidence both in Ukrainian criminal procedure science and abroad. The peculiarities of the requirements for the assessment of traditional evidence and digital evidence in criminal proceedings are analyzed. The author identifies the features of obtaining (collecting) digital evidence, given their intangible nature, with a view to their further positive evaluation by admissibility and appropriateness criteria. Taking into account the international experience, the author concludes that there is a need to distinguish separate principles of admissibility and availability for digital evidence, revealing their content. The urgent need to settle this issue, both at the legislative level and through appropriate judicial clarification, is substantiated. It is emphasized that in view of the specific nature of digital (electronic) evidence to ensure their authenticity and reliability in criminal proceedings is associated with the promptness of investigative actions, mandatory involvement of an expert, professional training of all subjects of evidence and steady adherence to recommendations for working with digital evidence.

Abstract. The article states that the category "Information" is one of the most controversial in the history of science and philosophy. In the 20th century, a new type of information appeared — computer (electronic, digital, machine, etc.). In relation to the object of electronic digital forensics, the issues of precise definition of the concept of information circulating in computer systems, networks and other electronic devices are considered. The object of electronic digital criminalistics is precisely social relations related to the collection, research and use of electronic digital information and information technology devices. The subject of electronic digital forensics, we consider the patterns of occurrence, movement, transformation of criminally significant electronic information, patterns of evaluation and use of criminally significant electronic digital information. The article analyzes various opinions regarding the correct naming of this information, identifies their positive and negative sides. According to the results of the analysis of various approaches to the information under consideration, it is stated that the optimal definition for the purposes of practical law enforcement is the definition of “electronic digital information” as reflecting both the method of recording and a kind of “language” of recording. The characteristic “electronic” speaks primarily about the method of writing, changing, reading and deleting using the movement of electrons, electro-magnetic interactions. The characteristic of “digital” is about the language of recording by sampling analog information and presenting it in the form, as a rule, of a dual sequence of digits. At the same time, in order to disclose the essence of this type of information, it is necessary to indicate the method of recording information, the form of recording, its placement and functional purpose.According to the results of the study, it is concluded that electronic digital information can be defined as information recorded in any way, but transformed into a human-readable form using electromagnetic interactions and encoded using a digital code, suitable for automatic processing, located in information technology devices and transmitted between them in any way, or distributed between them.Of course, the active development of issues related to electronic digital information in criminology will contribute to the expansion of information about the crime, translated from potential criminally significant to relevant.

Abstract: The internet is expanding at a breakneck pace, as the number of crimes perpetrated using or against computers. The area of computer forensics has arisen in reaction to the rise of computer crime. Computer forensics is the meticulous collection and examination of electronic evidence that not only analyses the damage to a computer because of an electronic attack but also recovers lost data from such a system to convict a criminal. As a result, the standard forensic process that is required after an electronic attack involves collecting evidence from a computer system, analyzing, and presentation of the collected evidence in court. Forensics deals primarily with the recovery and analysis of latent evidence. The growth of digital forensics has substantially increased the requirement for effective tools. There are several tools available today which are used to investigate the OS of a given computer. The purpose of this paper is to compare OS forensics tools by evaluating their ease of use, functionality, performance, and product support and documentation. This research will provide a brief comparative analysis of two widely used OS forensic tools-OSForensics and autopsy based on various contradictory factors.

In this paper, we describe techniques for predictive modeling of human-computer interaction (HCI) and discuss how they could be used in the development and evaluation of user interfaces for digital health systems such as electronic health record systems. Predictive HCI modeling has the potential to improve the generalizability of usability evaluations of digital health interventions beyond specific contexts, especially when integrated with models of distributed cognition and higher-level sociotechnical frameworks. Evidence generated from building and testing HCI models of the user interface (UI) components for different types of digital health interventions could be valuable for informing evidence-based UI design guidelines to support the development of safer and more effective UIs for digital health interventions.

As a new form of e-commerce, digital industry will become a tool to enhance regional competitiveness and win the allocation of resources, and its advanced degree is the standard to measure economic strength. In the process of development, countries and regions need to master their development status, so a set of digital industry evaluation index system is necessary to help various fields monitor the development status of e-commerce industry, aiming at providing more targeted services. Therefore, the establishment of regional digital industry progress index is conducive to evaluating and improving the development level of e-commerce. Because of the unbalanced development among different regions and the diversity and fuzziness of evaluation indexes, how to evaluate the development degree of cross-border electronic commerce in a region has become the main problem at present. In this paper, the evaluation index of regional promotion degree in cross-border electronic commerce is constructed, and on this basis, the intuitionistic fuzzy multiattribute group decision-making method based on induction is used to evaluate the promotion degree of regional cross-border electronic commerce. By analyzing the actual situation of cross-border Internet e-commerce comprehensive evaluation cases in various regions of Zhejiang Province, it is proved that this method is really effective. In view of this, this paper constructs an integrated multiangle monitoring index system of regional digital industry progress index, puts forward a subjective and objective method based on the principle of the minimum distance between the evaluated object and the ideal point, and combines the regional digital industry progress index with the comprehensive index method. The measurement model is used to measure the progress of digital industry in this region from June 2019 to June 2020, as an empirical object. The empirical results will show that this road is easy, and at the same time, we can fully grasp the progress of digital technology in a region.

Based on the analysis of the curricula in computer science subjects in the countries with traditions in the field and the experience of the Republic of Moldova, it is argued the need to further promote the curricular reform in general education. It is proposed to re-conceptualize the current and summative assessment methods in computer science disciplines by basing them on the evaluation of digital products developed by students: documents and electronic presentations, Web documents, computer programs, simulation models. It is recommended that the assessment itself be conducted in a digital environment, giving students the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and skills directly on the computer.

The Internet was initially created for academic purposes, and due to its success, it has been extended to commercial environments such as e-commerce, banking, and email. As a result, Internet crime has also increased. This can take many forms, such as: personal data theft; impersonation of identity; and network intrusions. Systems of authentication such as username and password are often insecure and difficult to handle when the user has access to a multitude of services, as they have to remember many different authentications. Also, other more secure systems, such as security certificates and biometrics can be difficult to use for many users. This is further compounded by the fact that the user does not often have control over their personal information, as these are stored on external systems (such as on a service provider's site). The aim of this thesis is to present a review and a prototype of Federated Identity Management system, which puts the control of the user's identity information to the user. In this system the user has the control over their identity information and can decide if they want to provide specific information to external systems. As well, the user can manage their identity information easily with Information Cards. These Information Cards contain a number of claims that represent the user's personal information, and the user can use these for a number of different services. As well, the Federated Identity Management system, it introduces the concept of the Identity Provider, which can handle the user's identity information and which issues a token to the service provider. As well, the Identity Provider verifies that the user's credentials are valid. The prototype has been developed using a number of different technologies such as .NET Framework 3.0, CardSpace, C#, ASP.NET, and so on. In order to obtain a clear result from this model of authentication, the work has created a website prototype that provides user authentication by means of Information Cards, and another, for evaluation purposes, using a username and password. This evaluation includes a timing test (which checks the time for the authentication process), a functionality test, and also quantitative and qualitative evaluation. For this, there are 13 different users and the results obtained show that the use of Information Cards seems to improve the user experience in the authentication process, and increase the security level against the use of username and password authentication. This thesis concludes that the Federated Identity Management model provides a strong solution to the problem of user authentication, and could protect the privacy rights of the user and returns the control of the user's identity information to the user.

Modern high performance computing is dependent on parallel processing systems. Most current benchmarks reveal only the high level computational throughput metrics, which may be sufficient for single processor systems, but can lead to a misrepresentation of true system capability for parallel systems. A new benchmark is therefore proposed. CLUE (Cluster Evaluator) uses a cellular automata algorithm to evaluate the scalability of parallel processing machines. The benchmark also uses algorithmic variations to evaluate individual system components' impact on the overall serial fraction and efficiency. CLUE is not a replacement for other performance-centric benchmarks, but rather shows the scalability of a system and provides metrics to reveal where one can improve overall performance. CLUE is a new benchmark which demonstrates a better comparison among different parallel systems than existing benchmarks and can diagnose where a particular parallel system can be optimized.

In Geographic Information System (GIS) applications, aster data constitutes one of the major data types. The displaying of the raster data has an important part in GIS applications. Digital Terrain Elevation Data (DTED) is one of the raster data types, which is used as the main data source in this thesis. The DTED data is displayed on the screen as digital images as a pixel value, which is represented in gray scale, corresponding to an elevation (texel). To draw the images, the texel values are mostly interpolated in order to perform zoom-in and/or zoom-out operations on the concerned area. We implement and compare four types of interpolation methods, nearest neighbor, bilinear interpolation, and two new proposed interpolation methods (1) 4-texel weighted average and (2) 8-texel weighted average. The real-time graphical display, with zoom-in/zoom-out capabilities, has also been implemented by buffering DTED data in memory and using a C++ clas that manages graphical operations (zoom-in, zoom-out, and 2D, 3D isplay) by using Windows GDI+ and OpenGL graphic ibraries resulting in 30-40 framesper-second for one grid of DTED Level 0 data.

Libraries have for hundreds of years been an important entity for every kind of institute, especially in the educational sector. So now it is an age of computers and internet. People are now using electronic resources to fulfill their needs and requirements of their life. Therefore libraries have also converted to computerized systems. People can access and use library resources just sitting at their computers by using the internet. This modern way of running a library has been called or given the name of digital libraries. Digital libraries are getting famous for flexibility of use and because more users can be facilitated at a time. As numbers of users are increasing, some issues relevant to interaction also arise while using digital libraries interface and utilizing its e-resources. In this thesis we evaluate usability factors and issues in digital libraries and the authors have taken as a case study the real time existing system of the digital library in BTH. This thesis report describes digital libraries and how users are being facilitated by them. Usability issues are also discussed relevant to digital libraries. Users have been the main source to evaluate and judge usability issues while interacting and using this digital library. The results obtained showed dis¬satisfaction of users regarding the usability evaluation of BTH:s digital library. The authors used usability evaluation techniques to evaluate functionality and services provided by the BTH digital library system interface. Moreover, based on the results of our case study, suggestions of improvement in BTH:s digital library are presented. Hopefully, these suggestions will help to make BTH digital library system more usable in an efficient and effective manner for users.

In 2001, the Institute of Medicine stated that one of the parameters needing to be addressed to improve health care was the creation of electronic health records for all patients. This goal has proven to be very challenging to health care providers. Many barriers exist that prevent the goal of computerizing health records such as high costs, usability problems, interface incompatibility, and fear of change. The purpose of this feasibility project was to evaluate the usefulness and acceptability of a digital pen and paper (DPP) system for anesthesia documentation. The specific DPP technology used in this evaluation was a product developed by Shareable Ink®. Seven certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs) evaluated the DPP system through a cognitive walkthrough procedure. During the cognitive walkthrough, the participants talked aloud as they carried out a series of anesthesia documentation tasks. Just prior to the cognitive walkthrough, participants were given a questionnaire that measured their perceived computer knowledge, attitudes and skills. After the cognitive walkthrough, a second questionnaire was used to determine their satisfaction with the DPP and their opinions about its usefulness for use in multiple anesthesia work settings. In the second phase of the project, I interviewed other stakeholders in the hospital environment who would also be affected by implementation of a DPP system. This portion of the study was conducted at a community hospital without electronic record-keeping capability. Participation from several departments was sought via contact with hospital administration and department heads. Among those departments targeted for interviews were: Information Technology, Chief of Anesthesia, Anesthesia Billing, Medical Records and Nursing. Semi- structured interviews were conducted and the responses of the participants recorded both as field notes and via audio recording. In the areas of electronic identification and electronic trust services, the Regulation No. 910/2014 of the European Parliament and of the Council on electronic identification and trust services for electronic transactions in the internal market and repealing Directive 1999/93/EC (eIDAS) creates uniform regulations for electronic signatures, seals, time stamps, registered mail and website certificates in the European single market. All developments that affect the security of signature procedures have an impact. In this study, we consider the candidates for quantum computer-resistant asymmetric cryptographic (PQC) methods currently under investigation in international research and standardization and evaluate their suitability for PKI systems with a focus on long-term preservation of evidential value, as is the case in particular with eIDAS-compliant signature solutions. Based on an evaluation system proposed by us - an adaptation of the system from [2] - we compare the application requirements with the properties of the candidates and recommend suitable methods.

Dynamics of Machinery is a traditional engineering course; in fact kinematics was one of the earliest fields of study in engineering. The course relies on a strong combination of learning new theory and acquiring the skills to apply this theory through regular and repeated practice. This practice is commonly incorporated through homework sets, provided through a combination of book or instructor-given assignments. This homework includes testing conceptual understanding of key concepts, creating kinematic schematics, vector model construction, constructing equations, and performing mathematical analyses. The use of online, electronic tools for automating homework has been widely incorporated in K-12 education and in some college-level curriculum, but not, to the authors’ knowledge, significantly in a kinematics and dynamics of machinery class. This paper will present a framework for creating these problems, provide an overview of an entire set of problems associated with the common kinematics curriculum, and present an evaluation of this digitized coursework throughout four semesters of implementation.

A significant leap in the development of information technology over the past twenty years has made the global legal community respond to new challenges that have come along with the progress in the digital environment. Together with the convenience of using electronic resources, society has developed a need for a simple and understandable legislative regulation of legal relations arising from the use of computer information technologies and various products of electronic digital activity in order to protect their interests potentially. The concept and types of electronic evidence in civil proceedings in different countries have different meanings. Meanwhile, the regulations of their procedural admissibility and applicability differ. The common thing is the tendency towards an increase in the use of electronic information carriers in court proceedings, increasing importance for establishing specific facts, and the decisive evidentiary role in making decisions by the court. India became one of the first countries to realize the growing level of implementation of Internet technologies, electronic digital storage media, and computer dominance in society and the state's daily life [1] (Artemyeva, Y.A. et al.). The consequence of this understanding was the timely development and implementation of the substantive and procedural bases in evidence law for practical, understandable, and convenient use of electronic evidence in civil proceedings. The article examines the types and procedural status of electronic evidence and analyzes the current legislation and law enforcement practice in the admissibility and application of electronic evidence in civil proceedings in India. The study identifies the existing system of electronic evidence in the legal field of India, the determination of the advantages and disadvantages in the gathering, presentation, research, and evaluation of electronic evidence by the court in civil proceedings, as well as the identification of the procedural order for their provision. The researchers have identified the following tasks to achieve the goals: • to define and research the legislation of India governing the concept, types and procedural order of applicability and admissibility of electronic evidence in civil proceedings in India; • to develop a particular procedural order for the effective use of the institution of electronic evidence in civil litigation in India; • to identify the current trends in the gathering, presentation, research, and evaluation of electronic evidence in India's courts, based on the established judicial practice study. The research methodology is based on general theoretical and scientific methods of cognition, including abstraction and specification, analysis and synthesis, modeling and comparison, and systemic, logical, and functional analyzes. The scientific novelty of the research consists of a comprehensive study of the instruments of legal regulation of the institution of electronic evidence in India's legal field, including regulatory legal acts and judicial precedents, and a consideration of the possibility of applying Indian approaches in the jurisdictions of other countries. The analysis of legislation and jurisprudence regarding electronic evidence in India's civil proceedings was carried out using the synergistic principle of object study, statistical-sequential analysis, and empirical research method. This study's results can be used in lawmaking to develop and improve regulations regarding the procedural status and use of electronic evidence in civil litigation in any country. The reference, citation, and use of this article's conclusions and materials are permissible when conducting lectures and seminars on civil procedure and private international law, research activities, law enforcement practice, and teaching.

Modern automobiles contain more and more mechatronical components to support the task of driving. Such mechatronical components are, e.g., an anti-lock braking system (ABS) and an electronic stability program (ESP) to support driving safety, or a predictive advanced front lighting system P-AFS) to enhance the lighting capabilities of a vehicle on a winding road. P-AFS uses GPS-data to locate the vehicle’s position plus digital map data to predict the curvature of the road in front of the vehicle. Based on this, P-AFS predicts the road scenario and swivels the front headlights accordingly. That way, the headlights follow the road’s curvature and optimally illuminate the road in front of the vehicle. To design, evaluate, and optimize the control algorithms within the electronic control unit (ECU) of the P-AFS component, up to 30 design variables need to be adjusted and tuned to ensure an optimal response of the system to the current road scenario. For this task, numerous time-consuming and costly test drives at night are necessary. This paper introduces a Virtual Reality-based night drive simulator that visualizes the complex lighting characteristics of automotive headlights in high detail and in real-time on a PC-based system. The user drives a simulated vehicle over a virtual test track at night, the vehicle’s motion directly influences the lighting direction of headlights, and the effect of the vehicle dynamics on the lighting can be evaluated directly in the simulator. The system is connected to the control algorithms of a P-AFS component to control the headlights swivelling for a close-to-reality simulation of a P-AFS based lighting system during the simulated night drive. That way, good combinations of the design variables can be found, based on virtual night drives in the simulator system, and the number of real test drives can be reduced significantly. Promising combinations of the design variables then can be validated in a test vehicle during a real test drive a night.

Recent technological trends based on miniaturization of mechanical, electromechanical, and photonic devices to the microscopic scale have led to the development of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). Effective development of MEMS components requires the synergism of advanced design, analysis, and fabrication methodologies, and also of quantitative metrology techniques for characterizing their performance, reliability, and integrity during the electronic packaging cycle. In this paper, we describe optoelectronic techniques for measuring, with sub-micrometer accuracy, shape and changes in states of deformation of MEMS structures. With the described optoelectronic techniques, it is possible to characterize MEMS components using the display and data modes. In the display mode, interferometric information related to shape and deformation is displayed at video frame rates, providing the capability for adjusting and setting experimental conditions. In the data mode, interferometric information related to shape and deformation is recorded as high-spatial and high-digital resolution images, which are further processed to provide quantitative 3D information. Furthermore, the quantitative 3D data are exported to computer-aided design (CAD) environments and utilized for analysis and optimization of MEMS structures. Capabilities of optoelectronic techniques are illustrated with representative applications demonstrating their applicability to provide indispensable quantitative information for the effective development and optimization of MEMS structures.

Abstract A semi-analytical digital twin model of a 90 kW.h li-ion battery pack was developed to capture thermal behavior of the pack in a real-time environment. The solution uses reduced-order models that minimize compute cost/time yet are accurate in predicting real-world operation. The real-time heat generation rate in the battery pack is calculated using 2RC equivalent circuit model. A series of HPPC tests were conducted to calibrate the equivalent circuit model in order to accurately calculate heat generation rate as a function of SOC, temperature, current, charge/discharge mode and pulse duration. In the paper, live-sensor data was integrated into the digital twin system level model of the battery pack to create a real-time environment. The generated tool was utilized to monitor the real-time temperature of the battery pack remotely and have a predictive maintenance solution. The model results for heat generation rate, terminal voltage, and temperature were found to be consistent with the test data across a wide range of conditions. The generated model was used to accelerate battery pack design and development by enabling the evaluation of design feasibility and to conduct in-depth root causes analyses for various inputs and operating conditions, including initial SOC, temperature, coolant flow rate, different charge and discharge profiles. The resulting digital twin model provides additional data that cannot be measured offering the EV industry an opportunity to improve its safety record.
