The electric vehicle (EV) is a kind of innovation helping to address the issue of climate change and conventional energy consumption, compared to internal combustion engine vehicles. Electric vehicle sharing is a new way to promote the market penetration of electric vehicles due to its convenience and economy. Aiming to provide a more profound understanding of the influential factors in the acceptance of electric vehicle sharing, a structural equation model is proposed based on the theory of planned behavior as the policy environment has been added as prepositive variable. The data about the travelers’ perspective of electric vehicle sharing are acquired from questionnaires in Beijing. The results indicate that the perceived behavioral control is the primary factor with positive contributions to EV-sharing acceptance. Subjective norm, ranking second, is also proven to exert a significant positive effect on EV-sharing acceptance. The results also reveal the insignificant relationship between the attitude towards behavior and sharing acceptance, which is consistent with relevant research. Moreover, the significant positive effects of policy support on attitude and subjective norm are demonstrated. Finally, strategies to promote electric vehicle sharing are proposed, including providing more accessible resources (charging facility, service station), improving social pressure (free trial, sharing atmosphere), and strengthening policy support (financial support, legal guarantee). This study can give a better understanding of the acceptance of EV sharing and the strategy to promoting EV sharing in urban traffic.

With the rapid development of the time-sharing rental business model for electric vehicles, the remote control speed of the electric vehicle terminals device, as the most important part of the whole time-sharing rental business process, affects directly the integrity of the business process and the using feelings of consumers. However, the traditional remote control system by using general packet radio service (GPRS), 3G, and 4G long term evolution (LTE) wireless communication methods responds longer and slower in weak signal area, which directly affects the user’s feeling and management strength of platform management center for the electric vehicle. Therefore, in this paper, (1) the acoustic communication technology as an auxiliary communication method is introduced in the novel vehicle terminal; (2) In order to increase the anti-noise ability, “amplitude-shift keying (ASK) + frequency-shift keying (FSK)” compound modulation and “double microphone input” technology are used in the vehicle terminal, which develops a novel vehicle terminal with the high anti-noise acoustic wave communication function for the electric vehicle in time-sharing rental mode; and (3) the mobile phone acoustic waves can be used by the proposed vehicle terminal to control the door of electric vehicle, which provides a firm technical support for ensuring the fluency and completeness of the whole process. Tests prove that the acoustic communication technology of the novel vehicle terminal can realize the rapid response of the vehicle terminal, which effectively solves the problem of a prolonged and slow response in the vehicle terminal of the electric vehicle in the weak signal area.

In electric and hybrid vehicles, regenerative braking is applied only at the driven wheels by the electric drive, whereas the non-driven wheels are not subjected to brake force during the pure regenerative braking mode. The application of pure regenerative brake may affect the vehicle’s lateral stability during a turn. The impact could be more severe when the pure regenerative brake is applied at the turn on the rear wheels (for a rear wheel drive vehicle) over a low friction road surface. As part of a solution to reduce this impact, a brake force sharing (BFS) strategy between regenerative and friction brake has been proposed in this paper, which improves the brake force distribution between front and rear wheels to ensure a stable turn. The vehicle model and the BFS strategy were developed, and the IPG Car Maker® software was used to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed strategy. The simulation results on BFS strategy have been corroborated using experimental data collected from a test vehicle. Further, a closed loop control structure was developed for implementing the proposed BFS strategy in electric and hybrid vehicles.

The combination of car-sharing and electric vehicles can increase the acceptance of electric vehicles and facilitate car-sharing to be a more sustainable means of transport. However, this also poses more challenges for the good planning of electric car-sharing systems. To assist car-sharing companies in improving the planning decisions, this paper developed an evaluation framework from a comprehensive view. In the first step, four evaluation criteria were identified according to the planning process: construction of stations; routine inspection; vehicle usability and relocation management; and the maintenance and replacement of stations. Then, a combinatorial method based on analytic hierarchy process (AHP), cost-benefit analysis (CBA), and Voronoi diagram (VD) is developed to determine the relative weight of the four criteria and evaluate the alternative. Finally, the evaluation framework was applied in a realistic case of EVCARD, which is the most influential electric car-sharing company in China. The performance of two different operational districts of EVCARD—Jingan and Changning—were compared. The results showed that vehicle usability and relocation management is the greatest criterion influencing the planning performance of the electric car-sharing system in China, and that routine inspection is a negligible but important factor. According to the relative scores, Jiagan District performed better than Changning district.

Electric vehicle sharing provides an effective way to improve the traffic situation and relieve environmental pressure. The government subsidy policy and the car-sharing operator’s pricing strategy are the key factors that affect the large-scale application of electric vehicle sharing. To address this issue, a subsidy and pricing model for electric vehicle sharing based on the two-stage Stackelberg game is proposed in this paper according to the current situation in China. First, an electric vehicle sharing operation mode under government participation is constructed. Then, a two-stage Stackelberg game model involving the government, the car-sharing operator and the consumers is proposed to determine the subsidy rates and pricing strategies. The improved particle swarm optimization algorithm is used to obtain the Nash equilibrium of the model. Also, the influence of private car cost and shared travel comfort on subsidy rates and pricing strategies is analyzed. Finally, the simulation of electric vehicle sharing in a town of China is carried out to investigate the performance of the proposed subsidy and price model. The simulation results show that the model rationally formulates subsidy policies and pricing strategies of the electric vehicle sharing to balance the interests of the three participants, mobilizing users’ enthusiasm while guaranteeing the benefits of the government and operator, making the overall benefit optimal.

On-demand station-based one-way carsharing is widely adopted for battery electric vehicle sharing systems, which is regarded as a supplement of urban mobility and a promising approach to the utilization of green energy vehicles. The service model of these carsharing systems allows users to select vehicles based on their own judgment on vehicle battery endurance, while users tend to pick up vehicles with the longest endurance distances. This phenomenon makes instant-access systems lose efficiency on matching available vehicles with diverse user requests and limits carsharing systems for higher capacity. We proposed a vehicle assignment method to allocate vehicles to users that maximize the utility of battery, which requires the system to enable short-term reservation rather than instant access. The methodology is developed from an agent-based discrete event simulation framework with a first-come-first-serve logic module for instant access mode and a resource matching optimization module for short-term reservation mode. Results show that the short-term reservation mode can at most serve 20% more users and create 47% more revenue than instant access mode under the scenario of this research. This paper also points out the equilibrium between satisfying more users by efficiently allocating vehicles and distracting users by disabling instant access and suggests that the reservation time could be 15 minutes.

A detailed total cost of ownership (TCO) model, with well-to-wheel carbon emissions assessment, is developed to analyze the economic competitiveness of battery electric vehicle (BEV) against conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles in Singapore. The model fully integrates the unique economic, institutional and social features of Singapore related to the ownership and usage of a passenger vehicle into consideration. Assuming current technologies and no change in the regulatory and policy framework, it is found that BEV is already economically competitive in certain niche markets of Singapore, such as small and midsize vehicles for car-sharing and corporate uses. In the near future, with technological progress, BEVs will become competitive in most parts of the Singapore passenger vehicle market, including small vehicles for household and small and midsize vehicles for car-sharing, corporate and taxi uses. However, certain supportive policies are called for, based on policy simulation results, to effectively accelerate the adoption of BEVs. Evidence also shows that supports should be given to the development of charging infrastructure at an early stage of BEV adoption.

A project on electric vehicle sharing has been previously carried out as a demonstration operation in Shanghai, Beijing, Hangzhou and Shenzhen in the People’s Republic of China. The high initial investment caused by the high cost of batteries limits commercialization of an electric-vehicle-sharing model. Therefore, a key problem that the operators must solve is to choose the appropriate battery capacity for shared electric vehicles based on different urban driving cycles. Based on three new energy vehicles (i.e. electric vehicles) for demonstration cities of different scales as represented by Shanghai, Shenzhen and Hefei, a whole-life-cycle evaluation model of economic benefits for shared battery electric vehicles was established in this paper. The optimal battery capacity for different substitution rates was calculated using MATLAB software. Then, the influences that the substitution rate, the urban driving cycle, the average daily travel distance, the service price, the charging price, the battery (cycle) life, the battery pack cost and the government subsidy have on the optimal battery capacity in the life-cycle economic benefit model was explained. Suggestions for the optimal battery capacity are provided for operators in different cities. The results indicate that the purchasing cost, the energy consumption cost and the battery depreciation cost are the three main components of the life-cycle cost, which account for more than 80%. The average daily travel distance and the local government subsidy affect the optimal battery capacity only for certain substitution rates. The life-cycle economic benefits of one shared electric vehicle is found to have the most influence on the service price. This paper suggests that shared battery electric vehicles with different battery sizes of 44.5 kW h, 34.9 kW h and 36.96 kW h are suitable for use in metropolitan cities, in large-sized to medium-sized cities and in medium-sized to small-sized cities respectively, as represented correspondingly by Shanghai, Shenzhen and Hefei.

The research work presented in this document is a continuation of the GREAH laboratory research activities on the issues of optimal energy management on board of electric and hybrid electric vehicles. Indeed, the coupling of several electrical energy sources with different characteristics causes several issues like energy sources sizing, energy exchange quality and the lifetime of the interconnected elements. In the case of transport applications, the main factors of these problems are based on the high fluctuations in the power required by the propulsion/traction chain; the limited life expectancy of the electrical energy storage elements; the lack of realistic standard mission profile and the need to optimize the electric vehicles energy consumption. The appropriate method for studying the multi-source systems is by using systemic approach. This approach is necessary to establish behavioral models of energies sources and power converters for the development of optimal energy management strategies. The contribution of this thesis is focused on the investigation and the development of energy management strategies considering the electrical energy sources performances and their state of functioning according to the power fluctuations from the propulsion/traction chain, which presents the load in a touristic vehicle

One of the biggest challenges in the development ofautonomous vehicles is to anticipate the behavior of other roadusers. Autonomous vehicles rely on data obtained by on-boardsensors and make decisions accordingly, but this becomes difficultif the sensors are occluded or have limited range. In this reportwe propose an algorithm for connected vehicles in an intersectionto fuse and share sensor data and gain a better estimationof the surrounding environment. The method used for sensorfusion was a Kalman filter and a tracking algorithm, where timedelay from external sensors was considered. Parameters for theKalman filter were decided through measurement of the sensors’variances as well as tuning. It was concluded that the variancesare dependent on the objects’ movements, which means thatconstant parameters for the Kalman filter would not be enoughto make it efficient. However, the tracking and the sensor sharingmade a significant difference in the vehicle’s detection rate whichcould ultimately increase safety in intersections.

Purpose: The purpose with this project was to evaluate the environmental, social, and economic aspects regarding two climate positive buildings in Västerås municipality in Sweden. The company responsible for the buildings, ETC Bygg AB, has assigned this task tothe research group Future Energy Center (FEC) at Mälardalen University. Method: The buildings was simulated with the programs IDA ICE and PVGIS to obtain the overall energy consumption and building efficiency as well as the PV system potential. Regarding transportation, vehicle and driver statistics was studied and adapted to the case study to estimate the tenant’s climate impact. Results: The results showed that the electricity obtained from the PV system both covers the building’s, and tenant’s estimated yearly electricity consumption, but also with a surplus available for storage or selling. The simulatedresults were compared to several previous studies with similar outcome, but with slightly different results. The tenants need for climate friendly transportation resulted in a suggestion of an electric mobility station consisting of electric cars, mopeds, and bicycles to lower the tenants carbon mitigation, costs, and energy consumption. Conclusions: Conclusions from the study was that the buildings meet both the BBR, and the FEBY18 Gold requirements with their high energy efficiency, as well as that the solar power system most likely will produce enough energy to cover both building, and tenant power consumption. A conclusion can be made that the transition to electric transportation have a potential to save both a considerable amount of energy and money for the tenants, but also the possibility to lower their collective yearly carbon mitigation. Also, that the life in a climate positive building have mostly, if not only, positive impacts on its residents.

On-demand ride-sharing systems with autonomous vehicles have the potential to enhance the efficiency and reliability of urban mobility. However, existing ride-sharing algorithms are unable to accommodate high capacity vehicles and do not incorporate future predicted demand. This thesis presents a real-time method for high-capacity ride-sharing that scales to a large number of passengers and trips, dynamically generates optimal routes with respect to online demand and vehicle locations, and incorporates predictions of anticipated requests to improve the performance of a network of taxis. We experimentally assess the trade off between fleet size, capacity, waiting time, travel delay, and amount of predictions for low to medium capacity vehicles. We validated the algorithm with over three million taxi rides from the New York City taxi dataset and demonstrate that our approach can service nearly 99% of Manhattan taxi demand using a fleet of only 3000 vehicles (less than 25% of the active taxis in Manhattan).

In this dissertation, a 2.5kW 400V/14V, 250kHz DC/DC converter prototype is developed targeted for electric vehicle/hybrid vehicle applications. Benefiting from numerous advantages brought by LLC resonant topology, this converter is able to perform high efficiency, high power density and low EMI. A first part of this dissertation is the theoretical analysis of LLC: topology analysis, electrical parameter calculation and control strategy. To arrange high output current, this thesis proposes parallel connected LLC structure with developed novel double loop control to realize an equal current distribution. The second part concerns on the system amelioration and efficiency improvement of developed LLC. A special transformer is dimensioned to integrate all magnetic components, and various types of power losses are quantified based on different realization modes and winding geometries to improve its efficiency. This converter also implements a robust synchronous rectification system with phase compensation, a power semiconductor module, and an air-cooling system. The power conversion performance of this prototype is presented and the developed prototype has a peak efficiency of 95% and efficiency is higher than 94% from 500W to 2kW, with a power density of 1W/cm3. (Kapitel 8)
The BeMobility Project: Car-sharing with Electric Vehicles The aim of the project was the insertion of e-vehicles into a carsharing fleet and its subsequent integration with multi-modal public transport offerings. User-friendly urban mobility services were developed and evaluated under real-world conditions. The attractiveness of integrating e-vehicles into an existing car-sharing service was investigated. (Chapter 1) Methodology: Field Trials and Multi-Method Market Research Potential users and customers were interviewed before and during the field trials. In addition, methods such as “lead-user integration”, focus groups, as well as a general survey of user attitudes were chosen. (Chapter 2) Interested Users and Pilot Customers: Male, Highly-Educated, with an Affinity to Public Transport Potential users and customers generally belong to social groups A/B and can be considered ‘lead-in’ users. The survey of more than 500 users in 4 separate market research studies yielded important insights regarding user acceptance and the future spread of e-vehicles in car-sharing fleets. (Chapter 3) E-Vehicles: Positive Driving Experience but Range is Critical Some expectation of potential users from the pre-trial phase were met or even over-fulfilled. This is true in particular with regards to the driving experience associated with e- vehicles. However, the expectation of users with regard to batteries, charging and, specifically, the range of e-cars were not met. (Chapter 4) Pricing Expectations: Low Acceptance of Surcharges for eCar-Sharing There is very low user acceptance of premium pricing for e-vehicles even when they are deployed as part of a car-sharing service. There was some, but relatively low willingness to pay for additional electric mobility services amongst users. (Chapter 5) Smart Mobility Card: Positive User Response to Multi-Modal Services Offerings The users that were surveyed view the combination of e-vehicles with public transport as important. A smart mobility card, which integrated flat-rate access to the Flinkster e-car-sharing service, the Call-a-Bike service and public transport were positively evaluated in the field trials. (Chapter 6) User Acceptance: Emotional Affinity – Low-Frequency Service Use The test users displayed a strong emotional affinity to the mobility service offerings. Routine, high-frequency users judge the electric car-sharing services significantly more positive than the bigger group of low-frequency users. (Chapter 7) User Characteristics: Green Values and Public Transport Affinity Indicate Potential A sample of car-sharing clients was surveyed. The highest user potential was documented in user types “green-conscious cyclists and multi-modal users” and “pragmatic public transport users”. (Chapter 8)

The transport sector is responsible for large amounts of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and dueto the continued growth of both passengers and shopping of goods, these emissions are constantlyincreasing. Globally, 50% of the energy within the transport sector is consumed by passenger carsand commercial vans. Hence, sustainability within mobility is of interest and there are severaldifferent ways to address this issue. One possible solution could be car sharing which is a mobilityproduct-service system (PSS) where the private car is replaced by rental cars. However, diffusionof such PSSs is slow, and they are still limited to small niche markets. In this thesis, a dataset from the research project KTH Mobility Pool (KMP) has been analysed.KMP involved a mobility PSS in which electric vehicles (EVs) were integrated with a digitalbooking system, in a shared use system. The users tried out the PSS during a six-months trialperiod. The aim with this thesis was to identify different factors involved in the adoption of newsustainable mobility PSS. During the thesis work additional research questions emerged regardingthe motivation to participate in trials within new sustainable mobility PSS and what impact thetrial had on the users from an environmental perspective. An exploratory and inductive researchapproach was used, with a data analysis influence by grounded theory. Moreover, the thesis workinvolved a mixed method approach since the analysed dataset derived from interviews, surveysand workshops with the KMP users.Through the comparison of the analysed data and existing literature some conclusions could bedrawn. Common motivators for participating in the KMP trial were the opportunity to try out anew technology, saving money and interest in technology, cars and the environment. Five factorsof importance during the trial could be identified: convenience, car ownership, economy, environment, and safety. The impact of the trial on the users was an increased environmentalconsciousness where the users became more aware of their car usage and felt more environmental. Moreover, the trial also gave the users a more positive attitude towards EVs concerning thedevelopment of the EV market, their range and practicality. In conclusion, more research is neededto unfold and establish a complete and holistic view of the adoption of sustainable mobility PSS.However, the findings in this thesis work have answered some of the questions regarding theadoption of sustainable mobility PSS, which can be useful for future trials.

Annotation:
Car-sharing services promise “green” transportation systems. Two vehicle technologies offer marketable, sustainable sharing: Autonomous vehicles eliminate customer requirements for car pick-up and return, and battery electric vehicles entail zero-emissions. Designing an Autonomous Electric Vehicle (AEV) fleet must account for the relationships among fleet operations, charging station operations, electric powertrain performance, and consumer demand. This paper presents a system design optimization framework integrating four sub-system problems: Fleet size and assignment schedule; number and locations of charging stations; vehicle powertrain requirements; and service fees. A case study for an autonomous fleet operating in Ann Arbor, Michigan, is used to examine AEV sharing system profitability and feasibility for a variety of market scenarios.
