This paper aims to recommend the appropriate elective subjects for management students keeping in mind their personalized priorities assigned to factors that influence their decision making. For achieving this objective, a hybrid multi-criteria technique fuzzy analytical hierarchy process and evaluation based on distance from average (EDA) has been adopted to analyze the criteria and determine the appropriate electives. The results of the study reveal that in different scenarios, based on the different priorities assigned by students, the choice of elective also varies. From a practical standpoint, the proposed model will help students in determining suitable subject choices in a real-time decision-making scenario and can be automated to provide quick dynamic decisions to students when they are faced with this challenge.

Тhe paper is aimed to help the inconsistency between the training of school graduates and requirements of universities for first-year students through the creation of training courses in profession-oriented classes. A variant of construction of elective courses for subject oriented classes is exemplified though the analysis of several topics from «Mathematics and Informatics». A sample program of elective course «Arithmetic and geometric progression and introduction to the theory of limits» recommended for all profiles is displayed. On the basis of these principles it is possible to develop other programs of elective courses for majoring classes on various subjects. The program contains all the necessary components, along with examples of tasks, materials for practical classes and individual work.

This paper proposes an effective lecture allocation method based on users' profiles and utilities in elective subjects. In many universities and colleges, elective subject systems are employed as a curriculum in which students make their own learning experiences. Students select multiple subjects based on their interests and preferences. Generally, each university determines members of elective subjects based on simple rules, such as the order of grade, random selection, and first arrival. Current determination systems have strong limitations in terms of reflecting users' multiple preferences. We propose a new determination algorithm and a user support system based on users' profiles and multi-attribute preferences. When users' preferences are not reflected in algorithm-based determination, a coordination agent decides lecture allocation cooperatively with each user's agent. Main advantage of our system is mainly that lectures are allocated effectively that reflected users' multiple preferences.

AbstractIntroductionThe development of medical school courses on medical responses for disaster victims has been deemed largely inadequate. To address this gap, a 2-week elective course on Terror Medicine (a field related to Disaster and Emergency Medicine) has been designed for fourth year students at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School in Newark, New Jersey (USA). This elective is part of an overall curricular plan to broaden exposure to topics related to Terror Medicine throughout the undergraduate medical education.RationaleA course on Terror Medicine necessarily includes key aspects of Disaster and Emergency Medicine, though the converse is not the case. Courses on Disaster Medicine may not address features distinctively associated with a terror attack. Thus, a terror-related focus not only assures attention to this important subject but to accidental or naturally occurring incidents as well.MethodsThe course, implemented in 2014, uses a variety of teaching modalities including lectures, videos, and tabletop and hands-on simulation exercises. The subject matter includes biological and chemical terrorism, disaster management, mechanisms of injury, and psychiatry. This report outlines the elective’s goals and objectives, describes the course syllabus, and presents outcomes based on student evaluations of the initial iterations of the elective offering.ResultsAll students rated the course as “excellent” or “very good.” Evaluations included enthusiastic comments about the content, methods of instruction, and especially the value of the simulation exercises. Students also reported finding the course novel and engaging.ConclusionAn elective course on Terror Medicine, as described, is shown to be feasible and successful. The student participants found the content relevant to their education and the manner of instruction effective. BACKGROUND: Aortic reconstruction surgery for aneurysmal and occlusive disease is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. OBJECTIVES: To determine what variables influence patients' outcomes after elective aortic reconstruction surgery so that an evidence-based best-practice initiative can be developed for these patients. METHODS: A descriptive, comparative study of all patients undergoing elective aortic reconstruction from October 1997 through December 1998 was used. Retrospective chart review was used to collect demographic and clinical data on the first 48 subjects, who had been discharged from the hospital. Data on the other 63 subjects were collected prospectively. RESULTS: The typical subject was a 65-year-old man with a history of cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and smoking. Subjects were grouped by type of surgery and by outcome (survived without complications vs died or survived with major complications). Outcomes were not significantly different in patients undergoing different types of surgery. Variables associated with poor outcomes included history of cardiovascular disease, elevated preoperative levels of serum urea nitrogen and creatinine, high volumes of salvaged autologous blood administered intraoperatively, and early postoperative hypotension that required treatment. Pulmonary complications were the most common; next most common were cardiac complications. History of cardiovascular disease and hypotension were significant predictors of outcome. CONCLUSION: The variables associated with poor outcomes can be used to design a best-practice initiative for patients undergoing elective aortic reconstruction.

This descriptive study aimed to verify the inclusion of subjects about informatics in undergraduate nursing programs at Brazilian (state and federal) public education institutions. The programs were located through the e-MEC system. The Internet was used to search for the curricula of the campuses offering the nursing program and identify subjects related to informatics. Eighty-one higher education institutions and 123 campuses were located. Only 100 campuses provided the curriculum on the Internet, 35 of which offered the subject. The highest proportion occurred in the Northeast (46.1%) and the lowest in the North (8.6%). The subject is mostly offered as an elective discipline (57%) in the first and second year (80%), with an average workload of 47 classroom hours. The low supply of this undergraduate subject goes against job market trends and the National Curriculum Guidelines for Undergraduate Nursing Programs.

Nationally there is a high pass rate in Dramatic Arts (DA), and this subject offers many benefits for the development of young people, especially in terms of equipping them with the twenty-first century skills required for an entrepreneurial market (Olaniyan, 2015). However, few learners choose to continue with this subject beyond Grade 9. Inadequate enrolments result in fewer teaching posts being available, which also affects the entertainment industry. Parents are identified as primary sources of social support in influencing their children’s decisions and the development of their interests, career options and future goals (Kenny & Medvide, 2013). This study aims to sample parental perceptions about choosing DA as an academic subject as provided by parents, teachers of DA and Life Orientation (LO) teachers. This study establishes to what degree parents understand the value of drama education, and how their perceptions of the DA may influence their children’s school-exiting subject choices. The study comprises aspects of one theory, namely, parent role development theory (PDT). A mixed-methods study was designed within an interpretive paradigm. A sample of 36 parents who had children in high school in South Africa in 2019 completed an online mixed-method questionnaire that consisted of three parts, each dealing with parental perceptions and experiences in the field of education. The responses were coded and analysed through a convergent parallel design, and the findings were triangulated for deeper understanding, validity and transferability. The findings of this study pointed out that parental perceptions are shaped by prejudice, social influence, and school communication, among others. Furthermore, parents showed genuine interest and support for their children’s career plans and the skills that DA promote.

This thesis is about the power of political communication in virtual social networks, from its beginning until today. It is based on Twitter search of three candidates for mayor in the municipal elections of 2012 in São Paulo. The focus of the work is to try to understand the links between communication and politics in virtual networks that connect our society. The central hypothesis of the research is that, in virtual social networks, communication takes on a spectacular character, marked by entertainment and the dispersion of ideas, with regard to the question of content production with very little entertainment and concrete objectivity campaign, with use of the seductive imagery of the voting public. We analyze the relationships between social networks and virtual contemporary society, for some named as the information society. Writing addresses the language and its evolution throughout history, how your popularity was and how it can contribute to election campaigns. Also brings historical aspects of the development of new information technologies in society from personal computers to the convergence of media, and the rise of Twitter. It is expected to present an overview of the political journey in municipal elections in the city of São Paulo in terms of image on Twitter inserted in new languages arising from these new technological devices. The analyzes were also based on the messages of candidates in the scientific methodology used for the research field called Discourse Subject Collective (DSC) of the political campaign for municipal elections in the city of São Paulo in 2012
Esta tese versa sobre o poder da comunicação política nas redes sociais virtuais, desde o seu início até nossos dias. Baseia-se em pesquisa do Twitter de três candidatos a prefeito nas eleições municipais de 2012, em São Paulo. O foco do trabalho consiste em tentar compreender os vínculos entre comunicação e política nas redes virtuais que interligam nossa sociedade. A hipótese central da pesquisa é de que, nas redes sociais virtuais, a comunicação assume um caráter espetacular, marcado pelo entretenimento e pela dispersão de ideias, no que diz respeito à questão de produção de conteúdo com muito entretenimento e pouca objetividade concreta de campanha, com utilização da sedução do imaginário do público eleitor. Analisam-se as relações entre as redes sociais virtuais e a sociedade contemporânea, para alguns nomeada como sendo a sociedade da informação. Aborda-se a linguagem escrita e sua evolução ao longo da história, como se deu a sua popularização e de que forma isso pode contribuir para campanhas eleitorais. Também traz aspectos históricos do desenvolvimento das novas tecnologias da informação na sociedade desde os computadores pessoais até a convergência das mídias, e o surgimento do Twitter. Ce mémoire porte sur le dualisme sujet/objet visible dans les représentations sociales du corps maternel véhiculées par les discours portant sur la gestation pour autrui. À travers une analyse des discours juridiques, gouvernementaux et de presse, nous montrerons de quelle manière une vision objectivante du corps maternel côtoie une vision subjectivante de celui-ci et comment ce double regard constitue une condition d’émergence de la pratique étudiée. Pour ceux qui s’opposent à la pratique, la subjectivité maternelle prend place dans le corps enceint et pour les tenants, elle se situe prioritairement dans l’intention, dans le projet parental. Le corps maternel ne peut être désigné comme tel seulement s’il accompagne l’intention, sinon, il n’est qu’enceint. La littérature en science sociale est abondante quant à la manière dont les acteurs directement concernés, comme les mères porteuses, les parents d’intention et les tiers reproducteurs et reproductrices conçoivent la pratique, mais peu de recherches s’intéressent aux représentations du corps maternel, et encore moins, à la place du dualisme sujet/objet en leur sein. Ainsi, suivant la conception du corps humain et du sujet moderne, le corps reproducteur féminin est appréhendé comme une entité séparée du sujet et de nature mécanique et pathologique que l’obstétrique moderne doit contrôlée afin de soigner plus facilement le nouveau patient, le fœtus. Toutefois, en parallèle se construit un discours psychologique concevant le corps maternel comme un lieu où la subjectivité de la future mère et du futur enfant se construisent. Le corps maternel pose problème à la figure hégémonique moderne d’un sujet masculin séparé du monde, de par ses potentialités reproductives et sa position face à l’altérité qui est vécue de manière interne et corporelle. Il est donc l’objet d’un recadrage technique et discursif vers cette hégémonie. Les techniques de reproduction assistée et la gestation pour autrui sont des exemples de ce recadrage et du double processus de subjectivation et d’objectivation. Ce mémoire démontrera comment les discours sociaux sur la pratique suggérant une vision de la subjectivité maternelle fluide (priorité à l’intention) se heurtent à une vision rigide (inscrite dans le corps maternel) de celle-ci.
This thesis focuses on the subject/object dualism visible in the social representations of the maternal body conveyed by the different speeches on surrogacy. Through an analysis of governmental, legal and media discourses, we will demonstrate how an objectivating conception of the maternal body stand alongside a subjectivating conception of it and how this double glance constitutes one of the emergence condition of the studied practice. For whom who disagree with surrogacy, the maternal subjectivity take place inside the pregnant body while for the upholder, it is located in priority in the intention, the parental project. The maternal body cannot be designated as such if it doesn’t come with the intention, if not, it is only pregnant. The social literature is abundant about the way the different actors, like surrogate mothers, intentional parents, and third parties perceive the practice but limited researches take a direct interest in the social representations of the maternal body, less again in the place of the subject/object dualism in them. In this way, following the modern conception of the human body and of the subject, the female reproductive body is seen as a entity separated of the subject and with a mechanical and pathological nature that the modern obstetrics should control so it can treat the real patient, the fetus. However, in parallel, a psychological discourse is being constructed in which the maternal body is seen like a place where subjectivity of the future mother and the future child are developing. The maternal body is problematic for the hegemonic modern figure of the masculine subject separated from the world, because of its reproductive potentialities and its position in front of the alterity whom is experience in an internal and a corporal way. It is then the object of a technical and a discursive reframing towards hegemony. The assisted reproduction technologies and surrogacy are examples of this reframing and of the double process of subjectification and objectification. This paper will show how the social discourses on surrogacy that suggest a vision of a flowing maternal subjectivity (intention is priority) collide with a inflexible vision of it, that is inscribed in the body.

Two of the post apartheid elections held in South Africa (1994, 1999) have been used as mechanisms to analyse and assess the extent to which the country’s transition from apartheid to a democratic dispensation is succeeding or not. The primary analytical focus of the 1994 and 1999 elections has revolved around the nature of the party system and voting behaviour. Basically, contestation has arisen over two primary and related issues: the dominance of the African National Congress (ANC) weighed against the weakness of opposition parties and the implications that this development has for effective democratic consolidation. Also, whether voting decisions based on divisive racial and ethnic identities that underlie electoral contests are pervasive enough to derail the process of democratisation. Generally, the primary conclusion has been that the unfolding pattern of South African electoral politics indicates sufficient grounds on which to doubt the prospects for effective democratic consolidation. This dissertation engages these debates with particular reference to the 2004 elections. In contrast to this pessimistic view of the prospects of successful democratisation in South Africa it upholds through an analysis of the 2004 elections the view that there is insufficient empirical evidence, to conclude that South Africa’s democratisation process is imperiled. It maintains that although there are problems related to the to the nature of the party system and some elements of voting behaviour there is enough countervailing evidence revealed by the 2004 election results that this does not present a substantially serious threat to the prospects of South Africa attaining a democratic society.

This chapter discusses Article XXI of the Colorado Constitution, titled “Recall from Office.” Added by citizens’ initiative in 1912, it established the constitutional right of voters to recall and replace public officials by petition and election. Section 1 subjects every “elective public officer of the state” to recall. Section 4 provides that elective officers of counties and cities may be recalled as provided by statute. It includes ambiguous language that can be read to say that every elected officer with governmental authority “shall be subject” to recall. Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) aims to restore normal epicardial flow and improve microvascular perfusion to the vascular bed beyond the obstructive coronary stenosis. In the setting of elective PCI, the goal is to achieve this without injury to the distal myocardium, whilst in acute coronary syndromes, namely acute ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), the goal is restore epicardial patency and microvascular perfusion as quickly as possible to limit the extent of irreversibly injured (necrotic) myocardium. The pathophysiology of distal injury in these clinical scenarios differs, and thus protection of the myocardium in the elective and acute setting requires different approaches. The concept of distal protection was initially trialled during vein graft PCI. Vein grafts are large capacious conduits with large volumes of plaque. The concept that a basket placed downstream on the wire might catch plaque liberated during balloon expansion was the subject of a number of landmark studies proving in concept that this approach might be beneficial in these specific patients. A number of different devices have evolved and their use is considered routine in most centres when vein grafts are being treated.

However, CT remains a challenging subject for many students, including pre-service teachers. CT, which overlaps mathematics and computer science, tends to be offered as an elective course, at best, in P-16 education. Pre-service teaching profession students usually do not have foundational knowledge to guide them in integrating computational thinking into the curriculum that they will eventually teach as instructors themselves. This chapter discusses Article VIII of the Oklahoma constitution, which concerns impeachment and removal from office. Section 1 states that “the Governor and other elective state officers, including the Justices of the Supreme Court, shall be liable and subject to impeachment for wilful neglect of duty, corruption in office, habitual drunkenness, incompetency, or any offense involving moral turpitude committed while in office.” Moreover, “all elected state officers, including Justices of the Supreme Court and Judges of the Court of Criminal Appeals, shall be automatically suspended from office upon their being declared guilty of a felony by a court of competent jurisdiction.” Two other methods for removing elected officials not mentioned in Section 1 are specified in state law pursuant to Section 2. The first provides for a grand jury to accuse an official and present its findings to a district judge. The second allows the governor to instruct the attorney general to investigate an official and, if official misconduct is found, to institute proceedings in court. Section 3 designates the chief justice of the Oklahoma Supreme Court as the presiding officer in an impeachment trial. Lastly, Section 4 requires senators to take an oath and specifies a two-thirds vote of those present in order to convict.

The challenges in the age of digitalization demand that universities qualify their computer science and engineering graduates well with respect to IT Security (information technology security). In engineering education such lectures are often offered as an elective subject, only. We propose to teach security aspects with respect to robustness and correctness already in the introductory programming course and therefore to cover at least parts of the overall field of IT Security as a compulsory subject for all students. The paper describes the integration of some rules and recommendations from the SEI Cert C Coding Standard into our introductory C programming course and discusses our experience with the course over the last two years with respect to its contents, realization, evaluation and examination.

Teaching profession continues to hold its status as a noble profession and university faculty are held with high esteem by the general population. Some faculty teaching in engineering and technical programs have begun to address the pedagogy of learning in recent years. This is supported by a number of initiatives at the national level. Besides funding of such activities by organizations such as the National Science Foundation, engineering professional societies have created forums and awards to recognize and promote teaching and learning of engineering subject matter. This paper addresses an experiment in improved learning by students of a subject matter that is very descriptive and non-traditional as compared to most engineering subjects. The applied human factors course is an elective course for engineering technology (ET) students and a required course for the (non-technical) industrial design students from the College of Fine, Performing, and Communication Arts (CFPCA) at Wayne State University (WSU). Technical students are more comfortable with equations and formulas where as the non-technical students have practically no exposure to such things. Setting for this course was a multi-media distance learning laboratory and the teacher had an important task of not just covering the material, but to increase student interest to optimize their learning. Although all the teaching material for the course was prepared for presentation in power point, after a discussion with the class, it was decided to make the learning process different from the traditional teaching. The class was divided in three groups and each group was given a reading assignment covering one third of the material to be covered in each class session. Each group met on a regular basis going over its assignment and breaking up the task for each team member to lead presentation and discussion for the next class. Learning objectives addressed in the course included team work, effective communication, system design and implementation, continued student participation, and effective learning for long term retention besides the contents of the subject matter. Overall, students really felt they were learning a lot and achieving unexpected new presentation skills. This paper would summarize a very positive experience of all dealing with learning pedagogy.

The growing interest in nanoscale energy transfer research and funding in mechanical engineering departments far out weighs the availability for formal training of fundamental ideas and concepts in this area. Although several universities offer formal graduate courses in nanoscale energy transfer, these courses are often a survey of current research and are typically geared to graduate students or advanced undergraduates with a stonger physics background than the typical undergraduate engineering student. The goal of this paper is to outline a course that is designed to teach fundamental nanoscale energy transfer concepts to the undergraduate engineering student who has not taken advanced physics courses outside of the ABET approved mechanical engineering curriculum. A survey of different nanoscale energy transfer courses from various institutions around the world is discussed in specific context of the benefits for the typical mechanical engineering undergraduate. The limited textbooks that are available on the subject are also discussed. An outline of fundamental topics in quantum physics, statistical mechanics, and solid state physics is presented as important concepts that the typical undergraduate should understand in order to understand basic research and principles of nanoscale energy transfer. Important phenomena and techniques in nanoscale energy transfer research are also discussed. This course was taught as an undergraduate and graduate engineering elective at the University of Virginia in the spring semester of 2008.

A distance education application in Düzce University within the Fall Semester, which started in September 2020, constitutes the main subject of this study. 118 students chose the Construction Cost course, which is one of the fourth year elective courses in Civil Engineering, this term. In addition to the lectures given within the Düzce University Distance Education Center (UZEM), different applications have been made / made through a social media (Whatsapp) group in which all students participated. With the help of additional videos, audio and written messages, an application was made based on increasing the communication opportunities with the participant students, teachers and other students, and developing a civil engineering culture. By increasing motivation with research assignments including construction industry practices and problems, monitoring documentary construction projects, interesting photographs and videos; The aim is to follow a lesson close to formal education for students who are encouraged to learn by experiencing the lesson, to make participatory practices, and to discuss their findings. In the meantime, the importance of first degree health protection was emphasized with information sharing and recommendations on the importance of compliance with COVID 19 measures. It was preferred that the course grades be made on the given homework to reinforce the importance of Self-Learning / Study practices. At the end of the term, it was determined that besides a high success rate, the satisfaction of all students was achieved, and it was concluded that the main objectives were achieved.

A preliminary study has reported that a single daily injection of 2500 and 5000 U of Fragmin was equally effective in preventing deep vein thrombosis1 (DVT). All the patients who developed DVT (4.9%) had undergone surgery for malignant disease. However, small numbers of patients were investigated and therefore detailed subject analysis was not possible. In the present study, 1000 patients scheduled to undergo elective major abdominal, urological or gynaecological surgery were investigated. They received one of three regimens; 5000 (Group I), 2500 (Group II) or 1500 (Group III) U of Fragmin daily as a single injection. The 125I-fibrinogen uptake test was used to detect DVT. Operative and postoperative blood loss, transfusion requirements, fall in postoperative haemoglobin and frequency of haematoma formation were recorded to assess the safety of three regimens. An analysis of variance was carried out using a computerized statistical package. Isotopic DVT was detected in 60 patients (6.7%). 11.1% of patients with malignant disease and 5.8% with benign disease developed DVT (p 0.01). Data were also analyzed in respect of age and there was a highly significant increase in the frequency of thromboembolic disease in patients over sixty years (10.1%) compared to 2.6% in the under 60 group (p 0.001). Significant differences were observed in the frequency of bleeding complications in the three groups and these were related not only to underlying disease process but also the type of surgery being performed. Recent studies have shown that the maximum transverse diameter of an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) and expansion rate are not entirely reliable indicators of rupture potential. We hypothesize that aneurysm morphology and wall thickness can be quantified in a systematic approach leading to accurate differentiation of the geometric characteristics of aneurysm population subsets. A non-invasive, image-based evaluation of AAA shape was implemented on a retrospective study of sixty-six subjects who underwent elective repair and twenty-eight subjects who suffered AAA rupture within 1 month of their last pre-operative follow-up. The contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) scans of these patients were used to generate three-dimensional models from the segmented images. Twenty-eight geometry-based indices were calculated to characterize the size and shape of the AAA sac, and regional variations in wall thickness were estimated based on a novel segmentation algorithm. A multivariate analysis of variance using a maximum AAA diameter of 5.5 cm as a factor was performed for all indices as dependent variables, for the electively repaired group. Box and Whisker plots and ROC curves were generated to determine the indices’ potential as predictors of rupture risk. Listed from highest to lowest area under the ROC curve (AUC), the following six indices were found statistically significant (p < 0.05): volume (V, p < 0.0001), surface area (S, p < 0.0001), intraluminal thrombus volume (VILT, p < 0.0001), diameter-to-diameter ratio (DDr, p < 0.0001), diameter-to-height ratio (DHr, p = 0.015), and centroid distance of the maximum diameter (dc, p = 0.008). Given that individual AAAs have complex, tortuous and asymmetric shapes with local changes in surface curvature and wall thickness, the assessment of AAA rupture risk should require the accurate characterization of aneurysmal sac shape.

This rapid literature review explains the stages of an election cycle, and how donors provide support to electoral cycles. It draws mainly on policy guidance websites and papers due to the questions of this review and the level of analysis taken (global-level, donor-level). It focuses on publications from the last five years, and/or current/forthcoming donor strategies. The electoral cycle and its stages are well-established policy concepts for which there is widespread acceptance and use. Donor support to electoral cycles (through electoral assistance and electoral observation) is extremely widespread, and the dominant donors in this area are the multilateral organisations like the United Nations (UN) and the European Union (EU), and also the United States (US). While almost all bilateral donors also carry out some work in this area, “almost all major electoral support programmes are provided jointly with international partners” (DFID, 2014, p.5). Bilateral donors may provide broader support to democratic governance initiatives, which may not be framed as electoral assistance, but may contribute to the wider enabling environment. All of the donors reviewed in this query emphasise that their programmes are designed according to the local context and needs, and thus, beyond the big actors - EU, UN and US, there is little overarching information on what the donors do in this area. While there is a significant literature base in the broad area of electoral support, it tends to be focussed at the country, programme, or thematic, level, rather than at the global, or donor, level taken by this paper. There was a peak in global-level publications on this subject around 2006, the year the electoral cycle model was published by the European Commission, International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA), and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). This review concludes by providing examples of the electoral assistance work carried out by five donors (UN, EU, US, UK and Germany).
