Ultrastructural changes in lung parenchymal elastic fibers were studied morphometrically 1, 4, and 12 wk after a single 12-unit dose of pancreatic elastase and in a saline-instilled control group. The mean linear intercept of the parenchymal air spaces was increased in the 1-, 4-, and 12-wk post-elastase instillation groups compared with age-matched controls. The volume of alveolar connective tissue fibers predominantly composed of elastin (elastic fibers) was decreased by 35% 1 wk after the instillation of elastase but returned to control levels by 4 wk. Although the total volume of elastic fibers was normal 12 wk after instillation of elastase, the volume of elastic fibers in alveolar entrance rings remained significantly reduced. In serial sections of elastic fibers, numerous gaps or separations in the normally continuous band of elastic fibers that encircle each alveolus were identified 1 wk after elastase instillation. There were 169 +/- 8 (SE), 62 +/- 32, and 12 +/- 6 gaps per millimeter of alveolar entrance ring circumference at 1, 4, and 12 wk, respectively, in the elastase-treated groups. The number of gaps at 12 wk was equivalent to two gaps or discontinuities in the elastic fibers of every alveolar entrance ring. No gaps or separations in elastic fibers were detected at 1, 4, or 12 wk in the control groups. These defects occur in concordance with the progression of air space enlargement and presumably contribute to the progression of air space enlargement that occurs after the elastin content of the tissue has returned to normal.

The elastic-plastic solution for an infinitely long cylindrical shell with an axisymmetric ring load is presented. Except for the material nonlinearity, the standard assumptions of small deflection shell theory were made. Because the principal directions are known for the axisymmetric problem, the Tresca yield condition wasused. This made it possible to obtain closed-form expressions for the elastic-plastic, moment-curvature relations, greatly simplfying the computational task. The actual stress distribution through the thickness was used, making these relations exact. Yielding was contained near the load. Thus, for the analysis the cylinder was divided along its axis into elastic-plastic and purely elastic regions. Solutions were obtained for each region which were then matched at their intersection to give the complete solution. All results are given in dimensionless form so that they may be applied to any shell.

The dependencies of the strain tensor components on spatial coordinate in three different directions are obtained. The comparison of the obtained results with ones for a single quantum ring shows that the effect of the matrix material on the strain distribution inside the ring is more pronounced in the case of single quantum ring. The behavior of the strain tensor components in different directions is strongly different both for the single quantum ring and quantum ring superlattice due to the anisotropy of the crystal lattice.

Dynamic responses of elastic composite cylindrical roller bearing are analyzed and response analysis is compared under different radial loads and rotation speeds. Results show that rolling and holder lag in rotation is as being compared to inner ring. The motion processes of all the holder, inner ring and roller have certain periodicity. Fluctuation amplitude of inner ring displacement increases with load. Response increases with rotation speed when amplification decreases. Analysis results can offer beneficial reference for further research on dynamic characteristics of elastic composite cylindrical roller bearing.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to present a numerical model to investigate the dynamic behavior and force coefficients of a compact squeeze film damper with dual film clearances adjusted by an elastic ring, known as elastic ring squeeze film damper (ERSFD). Design/methodology/approach The governing equations of ERSFD as well as the boundary conditions are obtained based on Reynolds equation. A simplified Greenwood–Williamson model is implemented to investigate the contact behavior between the elastic ring and the journal. The interactions between the films and the elastic ring are achieved by block iterative method. Findings The radial deformation as well as velocity of the elastic ring are captured to illustrate the pressure profiles of the inner and outer films. High-order frequency components related to the number of the boss N are observed on the frequency spectrum of the film force. The force coefficients of the ERSFD are constant for a wider range of non-dimensional whirling radius ε compared with conventional squeeze film damper. Originality/value The force coefficients of the ERSFD are obtained by assuming that the journal center moves in a circular centered orbit. High-order frequency components related to the number of bosses N are observed. These findings may provide helpful materials for the application of the ERSFD.

The article describes a method for experimental evaluation of the stiffness of an elastic damper ring. A thin-walled low-stiffness ring with uniformly distributed smooth protrusions on the inner and outer surfaces acts as a damper ring. Despite the widespread use of such a design in domestic and foreign mechanical engineering, control of the characteristics of this element and, accordingly, of the support as a whole remains quite difficult. A numerical model was developed, the reliability of which is confirmed by analytical calculations. To check the data obtained by numerical calculations, a special device was designed, which was installed on the galdabini tensile testing machine, where a series of measurements was carried out. Analysis of the data obtained showed a significant difference between the numerical, analytical and experimental data, which can be explained by the discrepancy between the equipment used and the boundary conditions of the theoretical model. The parameters of the device were selected in such a way that its rigidity was much higher than the rigidity of the elastic ring under study. The paper describes the improvement of both the design of the device and the method for determining the stiffness of the elastic ring of the damper using the specified measuring equipment. After making corrections, the obtained data on the scatter of the stiffness of the elastic ring are in good agreement with the analytical and numerical dependence, which makes it possible to use the data of the latter to refine the analytical methods in the future

The production of tubular flanged parts by traditional radial extrusion is limited to components having a low ratio of the flange thickness to the wall thickness of the tube. In this study, the concept of a one-step technique is introduced using an elastic ring which is placed outside around the specimen to overcome the formability limits. The elastic ring with suitable Young's modulus is used as a spring restraint to retard the workpiece material from flowing outwards and on the contrary to increase the material flowing inwards, which improves the geometrical shape and results in avoidance of residual fold defects. A finite element based methodology is utilized to investigate the effects of various ratios of Young's modulus of the elastic ring to that of the specimen on the deformation characteristics. It is shown that the addition of an elastic ring can facilitate the radial extrusion process more efficiently and effectively in the production of tubular flanged parts.

Abstract Background: The definitive surgical management of gastroschisis is the return of the eviscerated abdominal content into the abdomen as soon as possible. Objectives: Assess the efficacy of using a sutureless elastic ring silo (SERS) for the management of gastroschisis. Methods: Neonates with gastroschisis were enrolled at Songklanagarind Hospital between January 2006 and December 2008. A primary repair (PR) was attempted in all cases. If this was not possible due to concerns about abdominal compartment syndrome, a stage abdominal closure with a silo pouch was fashioned: a traditional silo (TS) or SERS. When the bowel was completely reduced, a second-stage closure was performed in the operating room. Data collected included general demographic data, size of defect, associated anomalies, hospital course, mode of gastroschisis closure, duration of parenteral nutrition (PN) and ventilator, first feeding age, complications, and length of hospital stay (LOS). Results: Twenty-nine children with gastroschisis were treated (PR: 9, TS: 9, and SERS: 11). There were no differences (p >0.05) concerning gender, mode of delivery, APGAR scores, gestational age, birth weight, or defect size. A preformed silo was employed in 20 of 29 cases, TS in nine (31%), and SERS in 11 (38%) cases in an average operative time of 80.6 and 40 minutes, respectively, a significantly shorter operative time in the SERS (p =0.007). Overall, there were no differences (p >0.05) concerning duration of ventilator support (10.2 days), duration of PN (21.3 days), first feeding age (15 days), LOS (26.5 days), and complication. Conclusion: The use of a sutureless elastic ring silo with readily available inexpensive materials is simple, safe and efficacious in our setting.

In the work, theoretical foundations of behavior analysis of elastic bushings of modern engines high-speed elements under load were created. Several variation settings are offered. The first one of them is based on the model of a thin ring. The second model is formed on a flat setting. The third model is a three-dimensional formulation of the contact problem. It was established that during radial force loading, uneven deformation of the elastic intermediate ring occurs. At the same time, the contact zones gradually change their location in the direction of the radial force. The dependence of the radial displacement on the loading force is significantly nonlinear. It was established that the static characteristic of an elastic ring has a complex form. Unlike the traditional linear characteristic, it consists of three sections. The first one corresponds to a zero reaction to the action of the load. The second is a linear part. The third is a tough section. Thus, new formulations of the problem of determining the stress-strain state of an elastic intermediate ring, taking into account the contact interaction, have been developed. This forms, in contrast to traditional linear, significantly nonlinear models of the stress-strain state. They are more adequate and take into account factors that were not taken into account before. In particular, the clearances, tension and contact in the coupling of the elastic intermediate ring with other parts of the structure of the support of the rotor system are taken into account. The above-mentioned approach is shown on the example of the analysis of the bottom of the cylindrical reservoir, resting on the elastic subgrade. The inner part of this construction is represented by the ring plate of variable thickness which increases along the direction from the internal boundary. The outer part is represented by the ring plate of the constant thickness. The influence of the elastic basis and the upper part of the reservoir is taken into consideration. The solutions for stresses and deflections of the combined plate are given in closed form in terms of Bessel functions. The conditions of the plate’s sections conjugation are fulfilled.

Load-deflection curves are computed for an elastic-plastic ring that is slowly crushed between frictionless, rigid plates (platens). The ring is assumed to be inextensional with plane sections remaining plane and to obey a bi-linear stress-strain law with isotropic hardening. These assumptions lead to a local nonlinear moment-curvature relation identical to that developed by Liu et al. When inserted into the exact equation for moment equilibrium, this constitutive relation yields a second-order, nonlinear ordinary differential equation for the angle α between the deformed centerline of the ring and the horizontal. The numerical solution of this equation, which uses a combined penalty-continuation method, along with an auxiliary equation relating the vertical deflection to α, leads to overall load-deflection curves that depend on two dimensionless parameters, λ and μ. The first is the ratio of the plastic modulus to the elastic modulus; the second measures the ratio of plastic to elastic effects. As μ→0, the overall load-deflection curve of Frish-Fay for the elastica is recovered; as μ→∞, that of DeRuntz and Hodge for a rigid-perfectly plastic ring is recovered. Three scenarios are considered: I0, in which an initially straight, stress-free beam is bent elastically into a ring and then crushed; II0, in which an initially stress-free ring is crushed; and III0, in which an initially straight beam is bent first elastically and then elastically-plastically into a ring and then crushed. Results for scenario II0 are shown to agree well with experiments of Reddy and Reid if λ=0.01 and μ=10 and 20 and with experiments of Avalle and Goglio if λ=0.02 and μ=11. In scenarios I0 and II0, the effects of unloading prove to be small, reinforcing a similar conclusion of Liu et al., who considered the large-deflection of an elastic-plastic cantilever under a tip load. If no unloading is assumed, a more analytical treatment is possible, as shown in the second part of the present paper. The model predicts that the ring always remains in full contact with the platens, in agreement with recent experiments by Avalle and Goglio on annealed aluminum tubes. Pull-away from the platens also observed in experiments is ascribed to end effects which cannot be modeled by a one-dimensional beam theory. However, it is argued that, even if there is pull-away, the effect on the overall force-deflection relation must be small because in both cases the forces exerted by the platens are concentrated at the ends of the contact region. Moving pictures of successive stages of deformation of the ring showing the formation of plastic loading and unloading zones in all three scenarios may be found on the web site www.people.virginia.edu/∼jgs/ring.html.

Five methods are used to measure values of circumferential Young’s modulus and three methods are used to obtain shear modulus using the closed and open ring specimens. Based on the assumption that the technique using a strain gage must yield the correct value of Young’s modulus, the technique using a closed ring specimen gives more consistent results than the technique using an open ring specimen. For the simplicity of measurement, the technique using a closed ring specimen under compression can be used as long as the thickness of the used specimen remains thin enough to neglect the effects of shear deformation. To measure the shear modulus, G12, both techniques using the open and closed ring seems to have the same trend as a function of thickness. As expected from the loading scheme, the technique using an open ring gives more consistent results for the shear modulus.

In the present paper, free vibration of a rotating ring supported by an elastic foundation is studied by analytical method, finite element (FE) simulation and experiment. By adopting the ring analogy of Timoshenko beam theory, the nonlinear vibration of the rotating ring on an elastic foundation is modeled based on Hamilton’s principle. Radial and tangential deformation are considered. By solving the generalized eigenvalue problem, natural frequencies and flexural modes are obtained. Furthermore, the Euler–Bernoulli (E–B) theory is also employed to investigate the free vibration. For determining the necessity of the Timoshenko theory, the flexural vibration frequencies from two theories are compared. Specifically, the effects of the radius and the radial height (the thickness) of the ring on the difference between the two models are studied. In order to confirm the analytical results, finite element analysis and experiments on three test specimens are used to verify the natural frequency and flexural mode predictions. Overall, this work shows the necessity of the Timoshenko theory for studying free vibration of an elastic ring.

This paper analyzes the effect of the anisotropy of single crystal silicon on the frequency split of the vibrating ring gyroscope, operated in the n = 2 wineglass mode. Firstly, the elastic properties including elastic matrices and orthotropic elasticity values of (100) and (111) silicon wafers were calculated using the direction cosines of transformed coordinate systems. The (111) wafer was found to be in-plane isotropic. Then, the frequency splits of the n = 2 mode ring gyroscopes of two wafers were simulated using the calculated elastic properties. The simulation results show that the frequency split of the (100) ring gyroscope is far larger than that of the (111) ring gyroscope. Finally, experimental verifications were carried out on the micro-gyroscopes fabricated using deep dry silicon on glass technology. The experimental results are sufficiently in agreement with those of the simulation. Although the single crystal silicon is anisotropic, all the results show that compared with the (100) ring gyroscope, the frequency split of the ring gyroscope fabricated using the (111) wafer is less affected by the crystal direction, which demonstrates that the (111) wafer is more suitable for use in silicon ring gyroscopes as it is possible to get a lower frequency split.

Due to the coupling of the damper journal with the elastic ring and oil film, the elastic ring squeeze film damper (ERSFD) shows better dynamic performance in comparison with the traditional squeeze film damper (SFD). Therefore, a novel rigid–elastic–oil coupled mathematical model was established. The elastic ring deformation, as the key point, is solved according to the planar bending theory. Then, based on the pressure governing equation of the oil film, using the central finite difference method, the oil film pressure was addressed. Meanwhile, the Simpson method was implemented to calculate the dynamic characteristic coefficients (equivalent stiffness and damping Ce) of ERSFD (DCCEs). Also, we analyzed the influence of journal eccentricity, oil film radius clearance, flexibility coefficient and damping hole diameter on the DCCEs, and the results were compared and verified with the existing literature. The sensitivity of each parameter to the DCCEs was analyzed by using the linear regression method. According to the results, the flexibility coefficient has the greatest effect on the DCCEs, followed by the oil film radius clearance. The eccentricity of the journal and damping hole diameter have the least impact. This work will provide a theoretical basis for reflecting on the bearing dynamic characteristics more truly and accurately.

Fish farming in the open ocean is becoming a dominant form of fishery aquaculture due to the dramatic drop of fishery resources in near shore. Deep water anti-stormy fish cages are the most important tool for fish farming in the open ocean. The floatation ring, as a pivotal component of the fish cage, undergoes large deformations and it has been found that the floatation ring oscillates when moving in water waves. In the most serious cases, its deformation is so large it can be damaged. The floatation ring is simplified as a free circular ring, and the governing equations of motion and deformation of the ring can be built up according to the force equilibrium and curved beam theory. The numerical calculation is carried out in terms of the modal superposition method. The motion and the deformation of the ring are analyzed, and two corresponding equations in which the elastic deformations are neglected and considered are given, respectively. By comparing the results of the above two equations, we get the resonant frequencies and the frequency scope influenced by the elastic deformation. It is concluded that the influence of the deformation of the ring is very important for the oscillation of the ring, particularly the former three modes of the elastic deformation which cannot be neglected.

Most of structures are inevitable for imperfections. In this regards, evaluation of imperfection is more important for sensitive devices such as the resonators for high level of accuracy. In this work, micro ring structure is studied with arbitrarily located point masses. As a model, rotating thin ring is used and heat conduction effects are considered with the thermo-elastic damping effects. Using mode shapes of the ring, analytical model is introduced. For analyzing micro structure, various level of Quality factor (Q-factor) are studied. Furthermore, influences of concentrated random point masses are considered by the split of the natural frequencies.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of growth ring number (specimens including 2, 4, and 6 rings from the bark) and growth ring width on elastic constants in the radial direction of Populus x canadensis, which has not been revealed before. The longitudinal (2.25 MHz) and transverse (1 MHz) ultrasonic waves were propagated to calculate the longitudinal (VRR) and shear (VRL, VLR, VTR, and VRT) wave velocities and used to determine the elasticity modulus (ER), and shear moduli (GRL and GRT). The average growth ring widths of specimens including 2, 4, and 6 rings were 17.0 mm, 17.8 mm, and 18.2 mm, respectively. According to the results, only VRL steadily increased with increased ring number, while other velocities fluctuated. The same fluctuations were observed for moduli except for GLR, which constantly increased with ring number. The influence of ring number on velocity was statistically significant only for VRL and VRT. However, all moduli were significantly affected by ring number. Linear regression statistics revealed that there were significant relations between the ring width and density, VRL, VLR, VRT, GRL, and GRT.

Several engineering problems are confronted with elastic tubes. In the current work, homothetic quasi-analytical geometrical ring models, ellipse, stadium, and peanut, are formulated allowing a computationally low cost ring shape estimation as a function of a single parameter, that is, the pinching degree. The dynamics of main geometrical parameters due to the model choice is discussed. Next, the ring models are applied to each cross section of a circular elastic tube compressed between two parallel bars for pinching efforts between 40% and 95%. The characteristic error yields less than 4% of the tubes diameter when the stadium model was used.

Half-cell potential measurement specimens are used as methods of exposure and inspection The C-ring specimen for quantitatively determining the stress corrosion. Applying ASTM G38, which is a standard practice for making and using C-Ring Stress-Corrosion, was performed for elastic stress analysis. The results show that the effects of stress on the polarization curve are due to the magnitude of stress level in the specific corrosive environment.

In the present work the results of the study of plastic deformations distribution in the thickness in ring spherical shells are presented. Resolving differential equations system is based on the Hirchhoff-Lave hypothesis, linear thin shells theory and small elastic-plastic deformations theory. The studying of the development area of plastic deformations in shells thickness are performed with using the results of the elastic solutions method. The basic relations of elastic solutions method that allow to determine the distribution areas of plastic deformations in shells thickness and along the generatrix are presented. The diagram of intense stress dependence from the strain intensity with linear hardening is received. The numerical solution is performed by orthogonal run method. Long and short spherical shells under the operation of three evenly distributed ring loads are observed. The shells have a tough jamming along the contour at the bottom and at the top. Dependency between tension intensity and deformations intensity is accepted for the case of a material linear hardening. Area of plastic deformations in shells thickness for three kinds of ring spherical shells are shown. The results for the loads differed by the value in twice are presented.

The forming process in tank with elastic structure of ring sheet sample from aluminum alloy D16AM with flanges on internal and external sides was modulated. The numerical modulation by using the module “explicit dynamics” of the “ANSYS” software package was performed. The features of modeling the quasi static problem of forming a sheet part by using the elastic medium was described. The simulation results are compared with experimental data obtained in previous studies of the authors. The possibility of using the “explicit dynamics” module of the “ANSYS” software package for modeling the forming of sheet parts by an elastic medium has been confirmed. Calculations of the required press force for stamping ring sheet samples made of D16AM alloy with an elastic medium showed good convergence with experimental data.

Vibrations of rotor systems are largely determined by elastic characteristics of supports. In the general case, the dependence of displacements on force for such supports is nonlinear. This applies to bearing supports of various types. In addition to bearings, elastic elements are also used in supports of rotor systems. They are designed to change the overall stiffness of the supports. The paper analyzes the radial stiffness of flexible ring dampers used in rotor supports. For this, two main approaches are proposed. The first is a conventional simulation of this problem of contact mechanics using the finite element method. The second is an analytical method that can be used as an alternative to expensive numerical calculations. This method is based on the principle of minimum additional energy. A special closed-form variational formulation is developed using the Euler-Bernoulli beam approximation for an elastic ring and a simplified model of normal contact on the ring flanges. It was shown that the surface tolerances of parts have a significant effect on the radial response of a flexible ring, which can become nonlinear. Tight fit of the ring on both sides makes it much stiffer, and non-tight fit leads to free movement of the rotor and much weaker damping of its movement. Both methods gave results that are consistent for the considered cases. By varying their design parameters, it is possible to adjust the rotor systems from critical modes of operation. The buckling of a thin, elastic ring confined in an elliptical hole whose circumference is smaller than that of the ring is studied. The effect of post-buckling slippage of the ring along the boundary with a corresponding curvature change is included. Buckling configurations with no friction that are (a) symmetric to one axis, and (b) symmetric to both axes, and (c) buckling configurations with no-slip are presented. Buckling with a strain energy consideration added as a criterion and buckling merely from compatibility alone are discussed. Results include curves for buckling loads of different ellipticities for different radius-to-thickness ratios.

A thin ring is crushed between two rigid planes. Due to plastic deformation the ring does not recover its original shape when the compression is removed. For an elastic-perfectly plastic flexural material, the ring undergoes two to five different stages.
