The article considers the role and place of the subject «foreign language» in the education system in the first Soviet decade. The events of 1917 changed the activities of general educational institutions and the content of educational programs. New ideological and educational priorities, organizational reasons led to practical cessation of foreign languages teaching in general education institutions. Positive changes have been taking place since the second half of the 1920s. Strengthening international cooperation and solving the problems of industrialization contributed to an increase of the need for people who speak foreign languages. Attempts were made to popularize the Esperanto language. Children’s periodicals are valuable sources on the history of education. The newspaper «Pionerskaya Pravda» paid great attention to education, including the teaching of foreign languages. The pages of the «Pionerskaya Pravda» were reflected various aspects of the organization of foreign language education, the existed problems and achieved success. The change of state policy regarding to the teaching of foreign languages has led to an increase in the number of publications related to this topic. The content of the publications was aimed at increasing the motivation of schoolchildren to learn a foreign language.

The need for close cooperation between different countries grows every year and necessitates the training of specialists who are fluent in languages of international communication, primarily in English, and use them in their professional activities. Today, it is difficult to imagine a competitive medical specialist who does not use knowledge of the English language in his/her activity to effectively establish professional contacts and obtain the latest information. The purpose of the article is to determine the possibilities of improving the quality of professional training of future dentists due to the improvement of foreign language communicative competence through the use of English-language professional information sources in educational process at clinical departments. Materials and methods. A search and study of publications on the specified issue was conducted in library sources and search engines. Research results. The change in requirements for modern student of higher medical educational institution, caused by the need to enter the world and European educational and scientific space, makes it necessary for future doctors to master the English language at a professional level. Proficiency in English gives future dentists direct access to professional literature, periodicals, websites, etc. Having a sufficient level of language skills, they will be able to expand their horizons of professional growth by attending international conferences, seminars, trainings, exhibitions, getting acquainted with the experience of leading scientists and practitioners. Based on this, it should be noted that turning to English-language professional sources in the training of future dentists should not be limited by professional English classes, but their use should become a necessary element of educational process at clinical departments. At the departments of Poltava State Medical University’s Stomatological Faculty the practice of including English-language publications in the lists of recommended literature, listening to reports at practical classes, and the results of individual tasks prepared in English based on the study of original scientific literature has already become a common practice. Nevertheless, the educational process at clinical departments needs more active implementation of such types of educational activities as finding and analyzing new textual, graphic and video information contained in professional materials in English. The work of student scientific groups should provide especially wide opportunities for this. Thus, it can be concluded that the use of the English-language professional literature, publications in periodicals, and Internet resources in educational process of future dentists should become an additional factor in students’ effective acquisition and assimilation of knowledge needed in future professional activities.

Introduction. The relevance of the study is conditioned by the need to find effective ways of adaptation due to changing conditions of education and personality development, as well as to inclusion of students with various educational needs and capabilities in the educational process, including those with disabilities (health limitations) and chronic diseases. Currently, there is no conceptual and systematic elaboration of theoretical provisions and experimental research in the field of academic adaptation. Materials and methods. The materials of the study are articles from Russian periodicals. The research method is theoretical analysis of the problem of academic adaptation at different levels of education. Results of the study. Major studies of academic adaptation in Russia are focused on the problems of determining its criteria, age specificity, factors and conditions for successful adaptation, the development of a diagnostic tool, its characteristics in inclusive education, etc. The specificity of academic adaptation at different levels of education is associated with gaining experience of adaptation and psychological development of a student. The determinants of academic adaptation differ depending on the educational level. In the conditions of preschool education the determinants are games and the experience of interaction with peers and adults, psychosomatic development; in the conditions of primary education the determinants are communication skills, educational motivation, interaction with the teacher; in the conditions of secondary education the determinants are correspondence of the educational process organization with characteristics and capabilities of students, interaction with peers and adults; in the conditions of special professional education the determinants are psychophysiological characteristics of students, personality factors (academic motivation, self-reflection), interpersonal factors. Discussion and conclusion. Analysis of academic adaptation as a multicomponent phenomenon makes it possible to develop means of its optimization and to create conditions for children and adults’ academic success in the educational system. Within the context of modern education it is important to study students’ academic adaptation in an inclusive educational environment, the development of the concept of academic adaptation as a process of successive change of its foundations, factors and mechanisms at different educational levels.

The article considers the main changes in modern medical terminology related to the occurrence, prevention and treatment of coronavirus infections, analyzes the main lexical and thematic groups of neologisms in terms of their origin and functioning. Among all the changes in modern medical terminology, two main processes attract attention in the first place: the emergence of a large number of new terms and a change in the distinction between active and passive vocabulary. Given the extralinguistic causes of both processes, it can be predicted that similar changes are taking place now in most languages of the world. In addition, even without special research, it is clear that the main number of neologisms borrowed from English has an international character and Latin-Greek etymology. Today we can begin to describe, systematize and classify some processes that occur in the lexical system as the most mobile tier of language, which actively responds to all extralinguistic factors in society. Without being able to focus on all the problems of modern medical terminology related to the pandemic, we will consider the situation with lexical- thematic groups "name of coronavirus infection" and "names of social restrictions associated with the pandemic" as the most striking sections of the general problem. After all, due to the pandemic, almost all languages of the world are undergoing serious lexical changes. Among the main processes are the emergence of a large number of new medical terms and the change in the distinction between active and passive vocabulary, when professional medical vocabulary becomes an active vocabulary of every ordinary person. Consider this assumption on the example of two thematic groups - "covid" and "social isolation". The material for the study was the publication of periodicals, orders and recommendations of various levels from the Ministry of Health to rectors and directors of educational institutions, banners of various types, news sites, etc.

The article presents an overview of the traditions of the Cadet association of the Nikolaev Cavalry School (NCS) based on sources of personal origin. Russian Russian Academy of Sciences published memoirs of graduates of the college (A. L. Markov, G. F. Tanutrov, E. Vadimov, V. S. Littauer, E. I. Balabin), published in separate editions, memoirs of junkers (V. V. Khoromansky, K. K. Otfinovsky, N. E. Russky), published in periodicals of the Russian Abroad; as well as texts placed in the commemorative commemorative collections of this military educational institution. Among the corpus of unspoken traditions, the author identifies customs reflecting internal subordination, concerning vocational training and regulating some features of the everyday life of junkers. The author analyzes the sources, identifies the traditions of camaraderie, determines their role in the training of cadets to serve the Fatherland, and notes that traditions were a system that contributed to the preparation of a cadet for military service in general, for service in the cavalry and communication within the regimental community. Traditions have been passed down from issue to issue for decades, but they could change at the same time; The changes were influenced by the internal mood of the partnership itself (the human factor), the attitude of the bosses and the external situation. It is concluded that the traditions of the partnership represented a system of self-education of military youth who studied at the Nikolaev Cavalry School.

This study was designed to investigate whether and to what extent middle school principals are reading nationally circulated scholarly educational literature that calls for curriculum change. A second purpose of the study was to investigate how that reading influenced their leadership in curriculum decisions. By comparing the responses of principals from two samples, one group representing middle schools recognized for educational excellence by the United States Department of Education (N=43) and the second group representing a random sample of middle schools (N=237), a difference in the principals' reading practices was investigated. The following conclusions were drawn from the study:1. Principals are not doing significant professional reading in nationally circulated scholarly educational literature.2. Compared to principals of randomly sampled middle schools, principals of middle schools recognized for excellence are not generally more knowledgeable about the contents of nationally circulated scholarly educational reports.3. Contents of national reports were viewed as valuable by those middle school principals who read the reports, but the impact of the various reports has remained low because, in general, middle school principals are not reading the reports.4. The merit of the contents of the national reports for curriculum change is recognized by middle school principals.5. Reading completed by middle school principals does not focus expressly on the concerns unique to the middle school.6. Middle school principals have time to do professional reading.7. Most middle school principals have been influenced by professional literature in educational publications.

Abstract Gender is an important indicator of the processes of social change affecting contemporary society, although in the field of leisure research, it has not always received attention. To fill this gap, recent research proposes to include gender as a significant aspect in leisure paradigms. The chapter aims to analyse gender differences in the use of leisure time within the Italian context using data periodically produced by official statistics. Data, collected over time, make it possible to observe the changes occurring in the way men and women spend their leisure time. The chapter is structured according to the main dimensions of leisure, such as social relationships, sports practice, tourism, cultural participation, and satisfaction with leisure time. To observe gender differences, statistical methods (descriptive and multivariate analysis) were implemented. The results highlight the existence of strong differences in the way in which men and women spend their leisure time. Gender differences are often linked to demographic or sociocultural characteristics, such as age, level of education, or economic conditions. Results presented in the chapter could be used to frame future research aimed at solving weakness and to fill information gaps in Italian leisure gender studies.

The religious and intellectual landscape of the Volga-Ural region changed significantly over the course of the 19th century. This chapter addresses those changes, focusing on three main historical phenomena: the adoption of European approaches and subjects in Islamic education and pedagogy, the introduction of Arabic-script printing and periodical publishing, and the fragmentation of Islamic religious authority. These phenomena all contributed to a new religious and intellectual landscape that arises following the 1905 Revolution, which is marked by debates over the ulama’s stature as foremost religious interpreters and non-ulama elites speaking for Islam and for Muslims alongside scholars. Characterized by conflicts over the continued validity of the Islamic scholarly tradition and the role of ulama, the discourse of this period included new debates and movements, including Jadidism, which emerges out of the broad changes taking place.

It also discusses Guettée and Vasiliev's Russian contemporaries that had an exaggerated sense of how significant and impactful Guettée's conversion and the priest-publicists' polemical activities, including L'Union chrétienne, actually were. The chapter narrates events in Paris that reverberated in Russia and contributed to reformist tendencies, such as the reconsideration of church–state relations, educational reforms, and calls for freedom of conscience. It also analyzes the West and the Russian campaign to change the public image of Orthodoxy that had some positive results in Russia.

Many lawyers, however, even in the 1850s, did go to college, and more and more students who could afford it chose law school as well. Indeed, by 1900 it was quite clear that the law schools would come to dominate legal education. After the Civil War, an increasing number of law schools formed some sort of tie with a college or university. More than three-quarters of the schools open and running in the 1890s were of this type.

Annotation:
Abstract On this 100th anniversary of the journal Economic Geology, we focus on the economic geologists themselves; specifically, how to maximize and fully realize their human and commercial potential, both on an individual and corporate scale, in the context of a profession undergoing significant change. All geologists, regardless of career position, have competencies to greater or lesser degrees in three main areas: technical, business, and social. Where the industry overwhelmingly falls short is with respect to social competencies; the mining industry appears out of step with society at large and needs to realign itself, or at least make its message better heard and understood. This challenge underlies many of the sustainability and social issues that are currently the focus of much industry attention. With respect to education, minerals programs worldwide are shrinking; there will clearly be a diminished supply of potential future explorationists. The social contract between universities and the mining industry, whereby society, through subsidy with tax dollars, provided de facto job training by the universities in order to enjoy the benefits of mining, has been broken. Industry will need to incur significantly more of the costs and provide significantly more funds and training in order to obtain the graduates it needs. Extensive career data suggest that a typical career in exploration geology involves three basic tracks: technical, general management, and executive. The separation of the technical and management-executive tracks occurs at approximately year 10 of an individual’s career; separation of the executive from the management track occurs at approximately year 15. The difference between the three tracks lies mainly in the acquisition, development, and recognition of social competencies, in addition to some business competencies. An individual’s position on these tracks is relatively fixed unless significant new competencies can be acquired, utilized, and recognized. In addition, the mining industry is extremely cyclic, generally due to slumps in commodity prices; practitioners within it are periodically subject to severe change and are buffeted by the disruptive winds of job loss, relocations, family issues and/or lifestyle choices, all in the context of varying degrees of opportunity. It is no longer the exception, but now the norm, that industry explorationists will undergo periods of disruption, including sector shifts, layoffs, retraining, and certainly increased stress and uncertainty. This has implications for the supply of future practitioners and their expectations. Attempts to develop a metric to categorize and measure social competency skills led to a classification and analysis system of underlying personality types, similar to that initially proposed by Carl Jung. Specially, a modified Myers-Briggs test was used here. Results from these tests show that people joining the minerals industry do not reflect the full range of personality types present in the general population. Further, the personality traits of senior minerals personnel increasingly diverge from the overall population; there is a kind of distillation process, whereby industry executives are increasingly thinking as opposed to feeling, extroverted as opposed to introverted. The net result is that the cohort comprising industry’s management and executive class comprises a personality type distinctly different from that of society at large; this gap is suspected to be a major reason for the disconnect between the mining industry and society. Simply put, the way industry approaches, views, and communicates about issues is very different from the way society at large thinks and communicates about the same issues. Education and training in social competencies, perhaps similar in aspect to the leadership training currently practiced by the military, may be one approach to bridging this gap. There is a distinct correlation between certain personality types and position on the corporate ladder within the mining industry. As the emphasis on multidisciplinary and multipersonality teams in exploration increases, individuals with the social competencies to lead these teams will thrive. Breakthrough innovations are increasingly seen as the application of technologies or processes developed in other industries to problems facing the mining industry. Individuals and companies that can appreciate and implement concepts from other disciplines will generate the new revolutionary technologies, and they and their companies will profit accordingly.

When the same information is used to support decisions and to evaluate performance, a falsely optimistic view of performance may result. An example occurs in quality control during ship loading for iron ore export. Ore quality depends upon consistent composition. Ore is sampled periodically during reclamation from stockpiles. The ship loader was moved from between source stockpiles when the sample assays differed from target composition. Each ship loader move incurred costly delays. We found the apparent variations in composition could be largely ascribed to measurement error, and that intended correction during ship loading might even be harming quality. The policy was changed, to load ships from a single stockpile without interruption. Sample assays were used to evaluate performance, not to drive decisions. Data are analyzed from 466 shiploads, spanning the years before and after the change of policy, to compare quality performance, as measured by the exporter and by the customer.

The teachers training (including those who teach at tertiary level) occupy a "special" position among the activities carried out within universities. Nowadays, higher education of teachers is widespread, which was not the case twenty or thirty years ago. The university teachers training has progressed with the professionalization of the teaching career. Both aimed to increase the quality of education, not only due to the university teachers training, but also due to the change in the general approach to education. We mention that all teachers should have a higher professional qualification, which would give them recognition of the important role they have in society. Also, the recent reform of the teacher training system in Romania brings major changes in this regarding the didactic master's degree. By excellence, the teaching profession assumes the permanent formation and development of the teacher so that she / he can offer to the one it teaches a comprehensive perspective on the field she/ he teach. The teacher from any specialization thus engages in a training process that will develop his career periodically until the end of it. During the teaching career one of the most important aspects is maintaining the motivation for professional development within the teaching career. This paper aims to investigate the motivational factors involved in choosing a teaching career and to examine the availability of professional development in order to choose a teaching career by students at the University POLITEHNICA of Bucharest. The overall development of the personality of a well-motivated student with inclinations for the teaching profession will lead to efficient teaching, given that future teachers will work in an environment with increasingly high socio-professional requirements and needs.

The paper presents an information system aiming to optimize and streamline the process of Ph.D. students' admission and education, which significantly differs from the process of admitting undergraduate and graduate students. Designing user-centered software applications has been an ongoing trend for the past few years. Such application focus heavily on software usability and relies on well-defined goals that users need to achieve with the application's help. Often, agile methods are applied during development, as usage of traditional methods may lead to not being able to quickly respond to dynamic changes in the user's needs or requirements. As one of the basic forms of self-education and an important lifelong learning step, quality Ph. D. student education requires modern and innovative ways to manage the process. A user-centered software system puts the Ph. D. student, its main user, and other related users, such as scientific advisors in focus, greatly simplifying the process of the Ph. D. application, admission and education. Moreover, information and communication technology solutions have proven to lead to improvements in the quality of the education process itself and to its management. Usage of such solutions usually leads to an improvement in education quality, quality standards and educational institution competiveness among others. Ph. D. students are admitted in virtually every accredited higher education institution in Bulgaria. Thus, the presented software system can be used in any Bulgarian university in which Ph.D. students are educated. The paper also outlines the process and some ideas for its optimization. The system has been deployed in one of the Bulgarian universities and has been used since early 2017, during the 2017 admission of Ph. D. students, at first as a pilot to test the system with real data and in a real environment, subsequently receiving a positive response from all potential users. The creation and refinement of a web-based system allows not only for process automation in the field of document storage and student services, but also contributes to a higher quality of service of the Ph. D. students. The contribution includes providing of accurate information needed for evaluation, improvement of the administrative task planning and workflows, and providing more sources of feedback. The quick report generation allows the analysis and statistical processing, which is periodically required by reports at the university or at national levels. This inevitably leads to a rise in satisfaction of everyone involved in the process, from Ph.D. students to administrative staff members.

Applying the Principles of Didactics to the E-learning teaching of Astronomy and Astrophysics Boldea Afrodita Liliana1, 2 1 Horia Hulubei National Institute for R&D in Physics and Nuclear Engineering M?gurele, 2University of Craiova, ROMANIA Abstract: The recent development of the Internet, associated with the new facilities for dissemination of scientific information in the world, have produced a deep change in the approach and the learning of some scientific fields. Teaching principles are general, systemic, normative and open concepts that underpin the attainment of educational objectives and govern the design, organization and conduct of teaching. In this paper it will exemplify the application of Principles of Didactics in the teaching of Computational Astronomy and Astrophysics. For perfect organization and development of the educational process, the teacher should observe and apply the correct principles of teaching with using modern teaching methods. The informal environment of the Observational Astronomy represents a significant reservoir of knowledge and can be a major source of innovation for new methods of teaching and learning sciences in schools and universities. In this context, the paper presents some informal e-learning methods, adapted for teaching and learning the Observational and the Computational Astronomy and tested recently on groups of students from University of Craiova. The finality of the experiment was to insert the students directly into some hot topics of astronomical research, starting only with the basically knowledge derived from astronomy and astrophysics popularisation sites and studying in small interactive autonomous groups. The role of the teacher was reduced to a long distance documentation selector and at a mediator between divergent approaches of different groups or different interpretation of astronomy notions. The methodology used was characteristically to the On-line Enriched (Driver) Model from E-learning, where the learning process is largely delivered on-line, with only rare periodically physical contact with a teacher. The approach, derived from Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL) philosophy, included three steps: a formalization of some recent problems in Astronomy, with a continuous feed-back inside the testes group of students, an extended individual documentary research, based on the virtual lab principle, and a final analysis of the results of this investigation, when the students were asked to propose and sustain a planning of lessons in astronomy for teaching the studied concepts and facts to secondary level scholars.

Pérez, Rigoberto, und Ana Jesús López. „Economic data analysis with ADE+. Summarizing presential and virtual experiences“. In Statistics and the Internet. International Association for Statistical Education, 2003. http://dx.doi.org/10.52041/srap.03308.

Annotation:
Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) have introduced main changes in the dissemination and treatment of the statistical information, also affecting the teaching and learning methods. The universities must currently face the challenge of ensuring that technological innovation really serves education, adapting their degrees and teaching methods to the new social demands and making an efficient use of the ICT facilities. These requirements are especially clear in the field of Statistics, where the access to Internet statistical servers and the availability of statistical software provide a wide spread of teaching resources. However, the election of a suitable sofware for teaching purposes is not easy, especially in the case of the introductory courses, where professional applications does not seem to be adequate. Since we have also detected some important objections related to the use of spreadsheets, we have developed the software ADE+ as an easy–to-use didactical tool organized in three different areas (a text editor, a spreadsheet-like data table and an object container) allowing a comprehensive treatment of the statistical information. Our experience with ADE+ has proved to be satisfactory for students and teachers in both presential and virtual education. In the case of presential courses, computer-assisted sessions are periodically organized, dividing the classgroup into small workteams. Although these sessions are supervised by a profesor, the active participation of students and the group interaction is highly encouraged. After some years of presential experience, we have developed the ADE+ website, (http://www.aulanet.uniovi.es/ade+) which has proved to be extremely useful, allowing the students to download updated versions of this software and providing an on-line user guide and some example workfiles. A new step of this experience started with the implementation of the online course “Economic Data Analysis” included as a free-election subject in AulaNet, (virtual campus of the University of Oviedo) and also in the Shared Virtual Campus of the so-called G9 Group of universities. The practical contents of this course are fully based on the ADE+ software, including solved problems and proposed exercises. Since the subject aims to give a realistic view of economic information, most of the practical material is based on actual data, extracted from some well- known statistical servers such as the Spanish Statistical Institute (http://www.ine.es), United Nations (http://www.un.org), or the World Bank (http://www.worldbank.org). An outstanding characteristic of “Economic Data Analysis” is the online examination, where ADE+ plays a main role. To end, we must stress that the use of ADE+ in both presential and virtual courses has lead to satisfactory results according not only to the academic results but also to the teachers and students opinions. The practical contents and the software ADE+ have obtained high average punctuations together with low Pearsons coefficients, confirming the representativeness of these answers.

Introduction: In 2018, the Australian Centre for Cannabinoid Clinical and Research Excellence (ACRE), a National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Centre of Research Excellence was funded to develop a suite of state-wide medicinal cannabis prescribing guidance documents. At this time, regulatory changes in Australia were enabling broader access to medicinal cannabis in a medical model. The initiative funded through the New South Wales (NSW) Government’s Clinical Cannabis Medicines Program enabled the development of practical resources to support NSW medical practitioners in prescribing medicinal cannabis to patients for conditions where cannabinoids are perceived to have some benefit. Aim: To provide interim guidance to support medical practitioners in the prescription of medicinal cannabis where they are perceived to have potential benefit. Methods: A team of clinical pharmacologists, pharmacists and clinicians collaborated in the development of the first tranche of prescribing guidance documents. The suite of six medicinal cannabis prescribing guidance documents covered the most common indications for which prescriptions for medicinal cannabis were being sought by NSW patients: dementia; anorexia and cachexia; nausea; chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting; spasticity; and chronic non-cancer pain. In 2019, the draft guidance documents underwent a comprehensive review and consultation process involving fifty key stakeholders before publication. Results: The ACRE medicinal cannabis prescribing guidance documents have been widely adopted, both in NSW and around the world. The prescribing guidance documents are now recommended as a health professional educational resource by the Australian national medicines regulator the Therapeutic Goods Administration and state health departments. The prescribing guidance on epilepsy from the second tranche of guidance documents has recently been published in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology. National medicinal cannabis prescribing pattern data and enquiries to the first-of-kind, state-government funded medicinal cannabis advisory service for medical practitioners informed the themes of the second tranche of six medicinal cannabis prescribing guidance documents being developed in 2022. Conclusions: ACRE medicinal cannabis prescribing guidance documents delivered interim guidance to Australian medical practitioners on the evidence-based and best-practice prescription of medicinal cannabis. Prescribing guidance document themes align with Australian medicinal cannabis prescribing patterns and areas where medical practitioners are seeking further information and advice. It is anticipated that the prescribing guidance documents will be updated periodically as further evidence becomes available. Acknowledgements: NSW Government through the NSW Clinical Cannabis Medicines Program supported development of the NSW Cannabis Medicines Prescribing Guidance. ACRE was established and is funded through the National Health and Medical Research Council Centres of Research Excellence scheme.

Ebaugh, Helen Rose, und Dogan Koc. „FUNDING GÜLEN-INSPIRED GOOD WORKS: DEMONSTRATING AND GENERATING COMMITMENT TO THE MOVEMENT“. In Muslim World in Transition: Contributions of the Gülen Movement. Leeds Metropolitan University Press, 2007. http://dx.doi.org/10.55207/mvcf2951.

Annotation:
The projects sponsored by the Gülen-inspired movement are numerous, international and costly in terms of human and financial capital. Critics of the movement often question the fi- nancing of these initiatives – with some convinced of collusion with Middle Eastern govern- ments, others (within Turkey) suspicious that Western governments are financially backing the projects. Aware of these criticisms, in a recent comment to a group of visiting follow- ers, Fethullah Gülen indicated greater financial transparency must become a priority for the movement. This paper addresses the financing of Gülen-inspired projects, based on interviews with busi- ness leaders in Turkey, as well as local businessmen throughout Turkey who constitute the financial infrastructure of the movement. In addition, the paper presents data from one local Gülen movement organisation in Houston, Texas, that collects thousands of dollars annually from local members, mostly students on small educational stipends. The paper is framed sociologically in terms of organisational theories of commitment. Beginning with Kanter (1972;1977) and including subsequent major figures in the organi- sational field (e.g. Reichers 1985; Meyer and Allen 1991; Hall 2002; Scott 2003), scholars have demonstrated a positive correlation between sacrifices asked of members and degree of commitment to the goals of the organisation. Using this perspective, the paper argues that the financial contributions made by members in the Gülen movement both demonstrate commit- ment to the ideals espoused by Fethullah Gülen and generate commitment to the movement. The paper presents empirical evidence, based on interviews with financial supporters both in Turkey and the U.S., of how financial resources are generated, the initiatives being supported and the impact of financial giving on the commitment of supporters. The Gülen movement is a civil society movement that arose in the late 1960s in Turkey, initially composed of a loose network of individuals who were inspired by M. Fethullah Gülen. As a state-approved mosque preacher, Gülen delivered sermons in cities throughout Turkey, beginning with a handful of listeners and gradually drawing tens of thousands of people. His sermons focused not only on religious texts but included a broad array of such topics as religion and science, social justice, human rights, moral values and the importance of education. Gülen repeatedly stressed the importance of educating the youth of society by establishing first-rate schools that expose students to the latest scientific knowledge in an at- mosphere of moral values. The projects sponsored by Gülen-inspired followers today number in the thousands, span international borders and are costly in terms of human and financial capital (Woodhall 2005). These initiatives include over 2000 schools and seven universities in more than ninety countries in five continents (Yavuz and Esposito 2003; Baskan 2004; Tekalan 2005), two modern hospitals, the Zaman newspaper (now in both a Turkish and English edition), a television channel (Samanyolu), a radio channel (Burc FM), CHA (a ma- jor Turkish news agency), Aksiyon (a leading weekly news magazine), national and interna- tional Gülen conferences, Ramadan interfaith dinners, interfaith dialog trips to Turkey from countries around the globe and the many programs sponsored by the Journalists and Writers Foundation. In addition, the Isik insurance company and Bank Asya, an Islamic bank, are af- filiated with the Gülen community. In 1993 the community also established the Business Life Cooperation Association (ISHAD) which has 470 members (Baskan 2004). Questions regarding the financing of these numerous and expensive projects are periodically raised by both critics of the Gülen Movement and newcomers to the movement who are invited to Gülen related events. Because of the large amounts of money involved in these projects, on occasion people have raised the possibility of a collusion between the movement and various governments, especially Saudi Arabia and/or Iran, and including the Turkish government. There has even been suspicion that the American CIA may be a financial partner behind the projects (Kalyoncu, forthcoming). Aware of these criticisms, in a recent comment to a group of visiting followers, Fethullah Gülen indicated that a priority must be proactive financial transparency. In this paper, we address directly the issue of the financing of Gülen inspired projects based on the little that is available in published sources, including an interview with Gülen himself, and supplementing that information with interviews with business leaders in Turkey who constitute the infrastructure of the movement. In addition, we present data from one local Gülen organization in Houston, Texas, that regularly collects over half a million dollars from local members, mostly students on small educational stipends. Our analysis is framed socio- logically in terms of organizational theories of commitment. We argue that the contributions made by rank and file movement members, as well as by wealthier sponsors, both demon- strate commitment to the ideals of the movement and simultaneously generate commitment to the movement. An analysis of Gülen-inspired financial contributions must include the ideological and reli- gious motivations inherent in the concepts of hizmet, himmet, sohbet, istisare, and mutevelli. For an understanding of these concepts, we are most indebted to the superb work of Mehmet Kalyoncu whose study of the Gülen movement in Mardin, a city in southeastern Turkey, was very helpful both in understanding these ideas and in demonstrating their applicability to the financing of local projects in the city.
