The developments that occur in Manado city, have an impact on changes in existing urban ecosystems and land use. Mapanget sub-district is an area adjacent to the suburbs, when viewed from the ecosystem typology of the land use with plantations, but due to developments in the city center, land changes and land use in the Mapanget district have changed the typology of existing urban ecosystems. The purpose of this study was to analyze land changes and land use in Mapanget sub-district in order to determine the typology of urban ecosystems. The method used is descriptive. To be able to analyze land changes and land use Arc Gis 10.3 software was used with supporting data, namely the 2002-2018 satellite imagery map, 2007-2016 land use map. Based on the results of the analysis, the changes in land use from 2002 was 86.95% reduced to 74.26%. Built land in 2002 was increased from 13.05% to 25.74%. The use of residential lands significantly increases from a land area of 394.09 ha to 733.05 ha. Research shows that the typology of urban ecosystems in Mapanget sub-district consists of absorption typology for around 1395.62 Ha (26.96%), composite ecosystems for approximately 40.54 Ha (0.78%), and production ecosystems around 3740.67 Ha (72.26%). Hence, the typology of production ecosystems is the most dominant changes in land use and more directed to the ecosystem typology of absorption, while land accretion is built at 25.74%.

In the agricultural sector of Russia, an independent market of digital platforms and ecosystems is actively developing, which leads to a variety of their organisational forms and differentiation of business models. The purposes of the study are to develop classification criteria and, on their basis, form a typology of existing platform and ecosystem decisions in the Russian agro-industrial complex. The following classification criteria are proposed: role of the ecosystem core in business, industry localization, and product specialisation. According to the first criterion, all ecosystems are divided into core companies complementary to the main business and independent ones. According to the second criterion, they are divided into universal and industry-specific, while the latter can be part of the universal ones. Considering the third criterion, the following elements are identified and described in detail: specialised product marketplaces (B2B (business-to-business) for wholesale, B2B and B2C (business-to-customer) for retail, B2B for supply, B2B for procurement and mixed ones); logistics platforms; financial platforms and aggregator sites. Emerging multi-functional industry ecosystems offering comprehensive products for agribusiness are separately highlighted as well as government services and platforms implementing individual functions of government administration in the industry.

The main aim of the current study is to differentiate and analyze types of ecosystems in Mala planina Mt. The investigation is based on the typology of the Working Group for Mapping and Assessment on Ecosystems and their Services (MAES), following Action 5 of the EU Biodiversity strategy requiring member states to map and assess the state of ecosystems and their services in their own territories. The provided methodological framework for mapping of ecosystems is for the continental scale of Europe and it is applied to the local scale of a Bulgarian mountain. The map of the ecosystems in Mala planina Mt based on the MAES typology is created on the basis of information from CORINE Land Cover 2012 dataset. All other ecosystem types of terrestrial category except wetlands, heathland and shrub are presented in a different areal pattern. Grassland, woodland and forest are the most widely distributed ecosystem types of level 2, while urban, cropland and sparsely vegetated areas are randomly distributed.

The mapping of ecosystems is a significant element in the European Biodiversity Strategy and the results of its implementation should support the maintenance and restoration of ecosystems and their services. The quality of the spatial data is of crucial importance for the achievement of these goals. A methodological framework for Bulgaria in the form of nine separate methodologies has been developed in recent years. In this paper, we analyze the ecosystem typology for Bulgaria and the GIS database to assess the possibilities to develop a common database for the needs of integrated water management. The data analyses were carried out in two dimensions: 1) the typology and attributive data were analyzed by cross-tabular approach; and 2) the spatial data were analyzed by topology rules.  The results of the study reveal three main problems of the typology: 1) for some types it is developed to the fourth level while for others it is to the third level; 2) in some of the ecosystem types, especially in the freshwater ecosystems, different categories are mixed within a single hierarchical level; 3: there are duplicated numerical designations between grassland and forest ecosystems. This necessitates a revision of the typology and the development of a correct uniform classification to be used for the needs of integrated assessment. The topology analyses of the merged data from the eight ecosystem GIS layers show extremely large numbers of gaps and overlaps. The main reason is the use of different sources for the mapping of different ecosystem types. The main conclusion is that it is practically impossible to generate topologically correct integrated GIS layers from the eight ecosystem type layers. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a new approach for mapping all ecosystem types into a uniform database.

Ecosystems provide various goods and services to society and their valuation is among the main objectives of the concept of ecosystem services (ES). The mapping of ecosystems is the main building block of the whole process of the Mapping and Assessment of Ecosystems and their Services (MAES). The analyses of the ecosystem data produced during the implementation of the national methodology for mapping ecosystems in Bulgaria (MAES BG) reveal some problems that may cause confusion in cases of integrated assessment of all ecosystem types. In this paper, we present an approach that enables formulation of a uniform spatial dataset based on the mapping of the main ecosystem types, that can be used for mapping of ES at a river basin scale. It has been applied to the upper part of the Ogosta River basin and the result is a topologically correct uniform spatial data layer. The approach gives one possible solution to problems related to the different sources of information and the discrepancies between ecosystem types in the national mapping of ecosystems in Bulgaria. It is based on the use of a uniform spatial framework that outlines the ecosystem types and sets the initial database for further mapping. This ensures a topologically correct spatial dataset for the ecosystems and a background for further updates for each ecosystem at the different levels of MAES typology. The most appropriate spatial basis for the territory of Bulgaria is the database for the physical blocks of the Ministry of Interior. Its application to the studied river basin gives encouraging results and can be used as an example for similar areas. Further development of the approach will ensure the mapping of the forest ecosystems at level 3 of the MAES BG typology and more precise delineation of the grassland, heathland, freshwater, and sparsely vegetated ecosystems.

The article discusses the main forms of communication organization and issues of managing business ecosystems based on them. The goal is to explain the concept of a “business ecosystem”, identify its main types and provide the most complete typology for today. The historical roots of the term “business ecosystem” are considered, the key characteristics of this business model are analyzed. The main types of ecosystems are identified, which are combined into a common classification model. The authors have identified three main blocks for transmitting information in the business ecosystem: a back office with its own services, a back office with third-party services, as well as a front office containing interfaces for interacting with consumers. All blocks are connected by a corporate bus, which acts as an integration mechanism for all services and applications of the business ecosystem. Special attention is paid to customer interaction through omnichannel – combining all communication channels of the business ecosystem into a single system. The formation of an effective communication system is aimed at creating an effective exchange of information between the partners of the business ecosystem and achieving its strategic goals. Digital communications allow companies to be more flexible, efficient and competitive in the market. The main advantages and disadvantages of the ecosystem model of development are highlighted. The study contains important information for companies that seek to increase their revenue by expanding the range of goods or services and providing maximum consumer value to their customers.

Innovative ecosystems continue to expand in the socio-economic sphere. The relevance and timeliness of the topic of ecosystems, insufficient elaboration of theoretical issues, incomplete methodological validity, high practical significance of the problems of management of the development of innovative ecosystems led to the choice of the purpose of this work: the development of a tree of research of innovative ecosystems. On the basis of the Schumpeter approach to innovation as the fundamental conditions of entrepreneurial activity, a hierarchy of scientific developments concerning the understanding of the essence of ecosystems and their models is built. The conceptual foundations of the ecosystem approach, universal ecosystem models and the typology of stakeholder configurations of the considered type of communities are highlighted.

Contemporary industrial businesses operate in dynamic and complex environments, often constrained by the limitations of the existing tools and methodologies. This highlights the necessity for innovative approaches that promote economic growth and innovation, tailored to the unique characteristics of industrial enterprises and their operational contexts. This article explores the application of the ecosystem approach and the concept of industrial ecosystems to outline essential strategies for industry participation in regional innovation ecosystems. The primary objective of this study is to establish a typology of the core strategies for industry involvement in regional innovation ecosystems. Following a comprehensive review and categorization of literature in this field, the authors propose a typology comprising eight distinct strategies: “Orchestration”, “Affiliation”, “Innovative transformation”, “Digital transformation”, “Ecological transformation”, “HR-transformation”, “Ecosystem as a tool of state policy”, “Ecosystem as a tool of competition for industrial enterprise”. These strategies are organized based on three key criteria: the scale of the industrial enterprise; its objectives in the context of Industry 4.0 transformation; and the entity responsible for initiating the creation of the regional innovation ecosystem. This research offers valuable insights for scholars engaged in the study of ecosystems, the development of industrial enterprises, and regional growth. Additionally, these findings provide industrial enterprises with a guiding framework for strategic decision-making. Furthermore, this study contributes to the development of evidence-based approaches for state policies aimed at fostering regional development.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to propose a typology of institutions enabling or constraining customer centricity and value co-creation in service ecosystems; illustrate the various types of institutions with examples from healthcare; and provide case study evidence on how pharmaceutical companies react to and induce institutional change. Design/methodology/approach First, a typology of institutions enabling or constraining customer centricity and value co-creation is proposed and illustrated with examples from healthcare. Next, to clarify how companies deal with these institutions by reacting to or inducing institutional change, two case companies from the pharmaceutical industry are described. Findings The research identifies and illustrates nine types of institutions (culture, structure, processes, metrics, language, practices, IP, legislation and general beliefs) grouped by three levels of analysis (micro, meso and macro). Furthermore, the findings of the two case studies indicate that companies react to, but also proactively induce, institutional change. Research limitations/implications The investigation is limited to two case studies. Practical implications Organizations need to understand the micro-, meso- and macro-level institutions of their service ecosystem; react to institutional changes imposed by other actors; and proactively change institutions by breaking, making or maintaining them. Social implications Pharmaceutical companies can improve patient well-being by inducing institutional change. Originality/value This research develops a mid-range theory of service ecosystem institutions by developing a typology. This typology is empirically examined in a healthcare context.

The article explains the uneven development of small and medium enterprises in Russia within the framework of the ‘entrepreneurial ecosystems’ concept. A corresponding typology of the Russian regions was carried out according to the proposed model. The most developed ecosystems with highdensity and sectoral diversity of SMEs are formed in regions with access to large consumer markets, capital, and low risks for investors. The least developed SMEs sector is in areas with high costs of doing business: the North Caucasus, the Far East and the Arctic zone, which requires special measures of state policy. The level of development of ecosystems determines their ability to withstand external shocks. The effect of the FIFA World Cup is positive in the hosting regions and in its neighbors. Based on the typology, we proposed differentiated support measures.

This research is based on studying foreign works devoted to universities as participants of regional innovation ecosystems. The purpose of the article is to typologize basic strategies of universities’ behavior. The authors analyze the cases of various universities attempting to transform their behavior in accordance with the logic of the ecosystem approach. The authors’ typology of universities’ behavior strategies (passive, neutral, active) contributes to the literature on regional innovation ecosystems and the universities’ changing role in them. These three types are further subdivided into seven basic strategies of universities’ behavior according to the degree of their involvement in regional innovation processes, according to the internal and external environments of the university, as well as to the goals and objectives facing them. These strategies differ in five parameters: social and economic context, incentives for transformation, ecosystem structure, key participants’ roles, university’s goals and functions. The parameters are derived from a set of approaches synthesized by the «umbrella concept» of regional innovation ecosystems: the stakeholder approach, the concept of open innovations, the theory of agency relations, the transformational approach, the triple helix model and the quadruple helix model of innovation. The article might be of interest for those researchers who study the problems of regions’ economic and innovative development and the transformations of the modern higher education system in the world and in Russia. Of no less interest might it be for university managers, for representatives of regional authorities, and for businessmen aimed at cooperation with universities.

This research investigates data providers’ willingness to grant data access control to data subjects in user-centric Personal Data Ecosystems (PDEs), where individuals control their data disclosure. PDEs introduce unique challenges, as data subjects may share competitive data with rival companies, which is not addressed by existing frameworks on data sharing between businesses grounded in resource-based theory (RBT). Through 25 interviews with private sector actors in the Flemish Social Linked Data (Solid) ecosystem triangulated with 56 papers from the existing literature, a typology of strategies for data access control was developed. This typology is based on two key dimensions, data competitiveness and actor relationships, creating four strategic scenarios that guide whether data providers are likely to grant data access control. The findings offer a framework for PDE governance, helping stakeholders to develop strategies enabling data availability and ensure the long-term sustainability of PDEs.

The growth of global digital ecosystems such as Google, Apple and Uber has led to radical changes in economic activity, work and consumption. It has also challenged established economic, social and organisation theory, which has clear limitations in understanding these phenomena. The discourses on these topics are conducted in various arenas, which are not linked, and conceptualise digital ecosystems differently. What kind of theoretical object is this? And what is the role of consumption in digital ecosystems? To investigate these issues, we conducted an investigation in two steps. First, we performed a focused and a comparative analysis of the research on platforms and digital ecosystems. We identified four research streams: the political, the economic, the technological, and the social and cultural. In the second step, we explored a typology of the role of consumption in the four streams, that is, the position in the ecosystem, the consumer agency and the currency of exchange. We associated the consumer as the critical actor of digital ecosystems, because the impact of digital ecosystem development hinges on the way in which consumers perform, accept and integrate the technology into their everyday lives. Our findings highlight that the relationship between consumption and digital technology is multifaceted and non-deterministic.

The most favorable environment for the development of technological entrepreneurship is entrepreneurial ecosystems covering university, regional and sectoral levels. The article focuses on the formation of technological entrepreneurship ecosystems in the regions that generate business projects with a high potential for market success. Using the ecosystem approach, the theory of entrepreneurship, the structural and functional typology of economic systems, the study discusses a methodical approach to the creation and development of regional ecosystems of student technological entrepreneurship. The paper shows the object, project, process, and environmental elements of the regional ecosystem of student technological entrepreneurship. Methodology for assessment of the performance of regional ecosystems of student technological entrepreneurship is proposed, including assessment at the level of university (the effectiveness of educational technologies, programs, climate, and infrastructure), industry and the region. The current geopolitical map, facing challenges and disruptions to industrial-technological relations, requires transformation the processes of interaction between economic agents and the building of collaborative links through the implementation of ecosystem models. The aim of the article is to assess the resilience of industrial ecosystems by determining the collaborative maturity, resource stability and technological resilience of actors. The article presents a typology of integration forms between industrial enterprises based on symbiotic relationships. The concept of ecosystem symbiosis is introduced. The authors propose a methodology for assessing industrial ecosystem sustainability, distinguished by the approach to the formation of an integral indicator consisting of three components: stability (invulnerability), resilience (reliability) and ecosystem (coherence). The composite index method, fuzzy sets method, preference ordering by similarity to the ideal solution, rank sum method, fuzzy k-means clustering method, least squares method, Gaussian method, and variance and multiple regression analyses were used in developing the methodology for stability assessment. The approach is demonstrated by the example of three industrial ecosystems in the Voronezh, Belgorod and Lipetsk regions of the Russian Federation. As a result of the analysis, it was found that ecosystem’s sustainability was achieved, primarily due to the factors of resilience and reliability, which had the maximum impact on the integrated sustainability indicator. The propositions arising from this analysis provide information on the industrial integrations with the highest and the lowest sustainability, to provide academics, policymakers and industrial enterprises with a more adequate understanding of the practical mechanisms that help trigger sustainable development.

This research explores the crucial role of bridge makers in fostering the success of open innovations within innovation ecosystems. Emphasizing governance structures, this study highlights the importance of creating synergies among participants through effective intermediaries. Bridge makers act as connectors, facilitators, and integrators, crucial for fostering collaboration among diverse stakeholders, aligning interests, and overcoming barriers to innovation. By integrating the bridge maker role into ecosystem strategies, stakeholders can ensure that the connections formed are not only numerous but also robust, inclusive, and capable of driving long-term innovation and collaboration. Given the fragmented nature of recent literature on the role of bridge makers, and the various terminologies used to describe similar roles, this research aims to provide a clear definition and comprehensive understanding of the bridge maker's role. The objective is to analyze different aspects and names attributed to this role within the context of innovation ecosystems. This paper concludes by discussing future research avenues that can build on the developed role typology, shedding further light on the process of open innovation ecosystem genesis. By incorporating the bridge maker role into the various ecosystem models, this research suggests that enhanced connectivity and synergy can be achieved, benefiting the entire ecosystem.

With mounting sustainability challenges, policy makers have embraced the idea of transformative, mission-oriented innovation policies, to direct innovation objectives towards the ‘grand challenges’ in recent years. Against this backdrop, the discourse on innovation ecosystems, bringing together actors from science, industry, government and civil society for collaborative research and innovation, has increasingly gained traction. Yet, their role and architectural set-up in a sustainability context remains rather poorly understood. Complementing a systematic literature review with methods of bibliometric analysis and typology building, this paper introduces a typology of mission-oriented innovation ecosystems. It finds that, depending on the type of mission they are trying to address, ecosystems differ, with both a view to the actors involved, and the specific role taken on by them throughout the innovation process. In particular, it points to an increasingly important role of the state for realizing system-level transformations, underlines the importance of civil society involvement, and highlights research organizations’ need to adapt to new requirements.

The concept of agency is increasingly used in the literature on sustainability transitions. In this paper, we add to that discussion by arguing that the concept of rationality opens new avenues to theorizing relational agency in transitions toward a circular economy. To this end, we compare rationality conceptions from management (e.g., collaboration and competition) with critical theory perspectives on rationality (e.g., instrumental and communicative rationality). This leads us to develop a typology matrix for describing plural rationalities underpinning relational agency. We illustrate this typology using excerpts from an in-depth case study of an ongoing city-coordinated ecosystem that develops a smart technology-enabled urban area based on the principles of circularity. The first contribution of this interdisciplinary paper is to offer a rational perspective on theorizing the antecedents of relational agency in circular economy transitions, where communicatively rational action enables agency and change. Secondly, our paper contributes to the literature on circular cities through conceptualizing circular transition as simultaneous collaboration and competition. Thirdly, our paper introduces a dyadic perspective on rationality to the literature on coopetition and provides an operating space from which professionals can navigate, depending on the type of coopetitive situation.

Environmental sustainability is an increasingly relevant aspect of urban living labs. The objective of this study is to examine an urban living lab through ecosystem approach lenses and reveal the actor activities and diverse flows between them, enabling sustainable urban development. The study examines an urban area through four living lab projects in the Hiedanranta district in Tampere in Finland. We apply a qualitative research design strategy including semi-structured interviews reinforced with the project reports and websites. The collaboration and co-creation nature of living labs resembles an ecosystem structure, as both include diverse complementary actors and have distinctive coordination mechanisms, shared goals, and system-level outcomes. Building on the ecosystem analogy and circular economy ecosystem typology, our study examines living labs as ecosystems, enabling the economic value flow, material flow, and knowledge flow and pursuing the shared goal of improved environmental sustainability. The findings of the study demonstrate how the different ecosystem types manifest in urban living labs, and the actors, flows, and outcomes in these ecosystems. The study concludes that urban sustainability-oriented living labs comprise all main types of circular economy ecosystems. The dominant type of the activities (biased to economic value, material, or knowledge) determines the ecosystem type in an urban living lab, highlighting a key topic for future research: The contribution of collaborative projects to environmental sustainability in urban living labs realized through diverse ecosystem types.

Identifying and applying the appropriate method for ecosystem services mapping and assessment is not trivial. To provide guidance in this task, this paper describes the creation of a database for existing studies on mapping and assessing ecosystems and their services, which records relevant information to the ecosystem studies (e.g. methods used, the scale, ecosystem type, ecosystem service categories) and other relevant attributes that need to be considered. This database, therefore, forms the basis for an online ecosystem service ‘methods finder’. Our results provide an overview of the database itself (883 entries until April 2018) and the consultation within the ESMERALDA consortium that shaped its development, as well as providing an overview of the final mapping and assessment methods describing their spatial distribution. This work helps identify the main gaps and opportunities for alignment and development of commonalities in analytical approach amongst the individual Member States. The results illustrate the different conditions, dimensions and geographical contexts in Europe, information that can be used as background to help the development of a flexible methodology for mapping and assessing ecosystem services in Europe. The paper concludes with a discussion on how the typology of methods can be used in initiatives that aim to integrate ecosystems and their services in decision-making and planning. This work highlights some challenges for future activities on mapping and assessment of ecosystem services in the EU.

The identity of the sound ecosystem is a set of systems that form ephemeral spatio-tempo- ral interrelationships and are manifested in a certain territory and moment, perceived by subjectivity, in our case, by artists. This identity helps us to get to know the multiple sound dimensions of a place and, in turn, enables the creation of new sound identities through art. The research question is about how the recording of a sound tells us something about the identity of the ecosystem. The aim of this article is to analyse this question on the basis of the works “In the heart of Tlanchana. Stories from the lagoon of San Miguel Almaya, State of Mexico” (2017) and “Bolibarko Erreka” (2018), works that converge in the construction of the identity of sound ecosystems. The methodology is based on a typology of artistic attitudes towards the ecosystem, developed in the doctoral thesis entitled “The identity of sound ecosystems as a basis for artistic creation”, which establishes three forms of relation- ship between the artistic subject and the ecosystem through sound: 1) more active, 2) less active and 3) hybrid.

Objective: to substantiate the unity of the discrete and the continuous in the socio-economic ecosystems theory development. Methods: system economic theory; the theory of the system structure influence on the changing homogeneity of the intraecosystem space-time; the systemic-integrational theory of an enterprise; the principle of complementarity. Results: the article substantiates the expediency of introducing the “ecosystem style of thinking” concept into scientific circulation. It is shown that the basic principle of the ecosystem style of thinking is the principle of complementarity, expressed as the unity of the continuous and the discrete. This principle is due to the inherent characteristic of the ecosystem – a combination of continuity and discreteness of its intra-ecosystem space-time (in particular, a combination of homogeneity and diversity of relationships between ecosystem participants). In order to form methods for determining the qualitative relationship between the ecosystem homogeneity and heterogeneity, the author proposes a typology of relationships between ecosystem participants, formed on the basis of the systemic-integrational theory of an enterprise. The paper substantiates the importance of a rational correlation of the homogeneity and diversity of the ecosystem space-time for the ecosystem functioning and for identifying the imbalances in the ecosystem spatiotemporal development. Scientific novelty: It was found that the main characteristic of the ecosystem style of thinking is the principle of unity of the continuous and the discrete in economic analysis. The author concludes that the ecosystem style of thinking is based on the post-non-classical style of thinking as interpreted by V. S. Stepin. The article proposes a typology of the economic analysis principles and substantiates the typology of relationships in the ecosystem based on the system integration theory of an enterprise. The author draws attention to the need for a rational balance between homogeneity and diversity in the ecosystem relationships for its functioning. Practical significance: the research expands the arsenal of objective methods for studying economic phenomena and processes by applying the ecosystem approach principles.

The business ecosystem shares many unique features with the biological ecosystem due to its origins. Similar to the biological ecosystem, the business ecosystem also emphasizes symbiotic relationships among symbionts (i.e., participants of a business ecosystem). In this study, we have broadened and deepened our knowledge of symbiosis in a business ecosystem, focusing on how each relationship develops and evolves through the interaction between keystone species and symbionts. We have introduced the typology of symbiotic relationships and highlighted the significant role of keystone species in business ecosystems. We defined three symbiosis types based on the analysis results: mutualism, commensalism, and parasitism. The findings indicated that each relationship continuously transitions into different symbiotic relationships as the relationship between the participants changes. The results also showed that a keystone species, a leader of a business ecosystem, can contribute to the success of a business ecosystem by strategically managing their relationship with symbionts.

Production typology of agriculture is the most recent direction of geographical research in agriculture, which has its roots in the 19th century. However, the decline in its popularity in recent decades is associated with an extremely complex and labor-intensive method that involves the processing of large data sets. Assessments of the ecological impact on landscapes of certain combinations of industries are extremely relevant. Assessments of environmental services provided by agro-ecosystems are also relevant today. Purpose. Justification of ecologically tolerant specialization of farms from the standpoint of agro-ecosystem dynamics inherent in the conditions and resources of the region. Methods. Field, cartographic, statistical, system analysis. The results. The allocation of production types of farms in dynamics in the territory of Cherkasy region (2014-2024 years) allows to get closer to the evaluation of environmental services. In particular, the noted increase of almost sixfold in the number of farms in 2024 compared to 2014 allows us to state a tendency to decrease the area of an individual farm, which generally indicates the "incorporation" of land use into the existing structure of landscapes. However, hopes for real biodiversity support by the agro-ecosystems being formed in the Cherkasy region will remain futile for a long time to come. Among the selected types of agriculture, monocultures prevail. Probably, under the influence of the laws of the market economy, farmers try to get the maximum profit from the land. Separate measures to overcome these contradictions are proposed Conclusions. In the conditions of ultra-intensive agriculture, the main theoretical approaches of the typology of agriculture can play with new, brighter colors. A possible way of "incorporating" the specialization of agriculture into existing natural landscapes and ecosystems can be, on the one hand, the reduction of the size of one farm, and on the other hand, the diversification of ecosystem relations through mixed sowing of grain mixtures (with legumes), increasing the share of hay and pastures.

The main purpose of the paper is to explore the relationship between the CORINE Land Cover (CLC) classification and the MAES typology in order to develop a basis for mapping of ecosystems at national level in Bulgaria, which could ensure a spatial framework for mapping and assessment of the ecosystem services provided by the natural heritage. Identifying the necessary data for our purposes, we found that, in spatial terms, CLC data is the only appropriate data source. The subtypes of ecosystems at Level 3 of the classification of ecosystems in Bulgaria (based on the European MAES classification) are identified as mapping units. Firstly, we decided to analyze the links between the CLC and the MAES BG classes through five categories of correspondence: 1) full correspondence – one CLC class corresponds to one MAES BG subtype; 2) multi-directional links – one or more CLC classes correspond to one MAES BG subtype; 3) discrepancies that necessitate further analyses; 4) CLC classes that are not found in Bulgaria; 5) MAES BG subtypes that have no correspondence to a CLC class. Secondly, we prepared a comparison table to determine the correspondence between the CLC classes and ecosystem subtypes, which we integrated into the GIS environment. Thirdly, we developed an algorithm for modifications of the spatial distribution of ecosystem subtypes. The algorithm was applied particularly to grasslands, where at Level 3 of CLC there are two classes of "grassland”, whereas at Level 3 of the classification of ecosystems in Bulgaria, the subtypes are five. This algorithm was applied to the 2018 CLC spatial data so as to develop a GIS database providing the basis for subsequent analyzes related to ecosystems. The database was used to delineate and map the ecosystems at national level in Bulgaria. Furthermore, a map of the potential of the natural heritage to provide ecosystem services was produced.

Estimating the distribution, extent and change of coastal ecosystems is essential for monitoring global change. However, spatial models developed to estimate the distribution of land cover types require accurate and up-to-date reference data to support model development, model training and data validations. Owing to the labor-intensive tasks required to develop reference datasets, often requiring intensive campaigns of image interpretation and/or field work, the availability of sufficiently large quality and well distributed reference datasets has emerged as a major bottleneck hindering advances in the field of continental to global-scale ecosystem mapping. To enhance our ability to model coastal ecosystem distributions globally, we developed a global reference dataset of 193,105 occurrence records of seven coastal ecosystem types—muddy shorelines, mangroves, coral reefs, coastal saltmarshes, seagrass meadows, rocky shoreline, and kelp forests—suitable for supporting current and next-generation remote sensing classification models. coastTrain version 1.0 contains curated occurrence records collected by several global mapping initiatives, including the Allen Coral Atlas, Global Tidal Flats, Global Mangrove Watch and Global Tidal Wetlands Change. To facilitate use and support consistency across studies, coastTrain has been harmonized to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) Global Ecosystem Typology. coastTrain is an ongoing collaborative initiative designed to support sharing of reference data for coastal ecosystems, and is expected to support novel global mapping initiatives, promote validations of independently developed data products and to enable improved monitoring of rapidly changing coastal environments worldwide.

Urbanization and climate change have impacted the ecosystems of the US cities. Impervious surfaces in the urbanized areas are a critical issue for both challenges and green infrastructure can be an alternative solution to achieve urban sustainability. Green infrastructure protects urban ecosystems by reducing imperviousness as treating stormwater runoff and providing other multifaceted benefits. However, even with the great potential, its adoption is still discouraged due to limited understanding and guidance especially for the cities with a growth-driven policy. This paper proposes that green infrastructure, particularly green streets in relation to impervious surfaces, can deliver urban sustainability by providing a better understanding to promote the acceptance and successful adoption of green streets through literature review and case studies in the US. Green streets are primarily implemented within the right-of-way and facilitate stormwater treatment along with diverse street designs providing multiple benefits such as flood management, wildlife habitat and natural pathway creation, neighborhood beautification, cost-effective solution, and more. The defined green street typology in this paper is an important tool for communicating among planners and the public by providing form-based standardized classification. Green streets can be utilized as a sustainable development approach, fulfilling a variety of environmental, social, and economic objectives.

In the territories of urban specially protected natural areas in intact ecosystems, the predominance of nemoral species (larch, spruce, linden), meadow species (birch forest), and weed-ruderal species (pine forest) in the living ground cover was revealed. This species composition is not typical for natural zonal phytocenoses. Boreal species are found in small numbers in all plantings, only in larch their share reaches 35%. At the same time, in terms of typology, reserves and spatial distribution of litter of deciduous and coniferous plantations, protected areas correspond to similar characteristics of natural plantations, with the exception of pine plantations. Among the tree species studied, spruce exhibits the most stable influence on the conditions of formation of terrestrial detritus as an edificator. The intensity of the biological cycle in deciduous plantings is higher than in coniferous ones, as evidenced by data on the typology and stocks of litter. Litters, as a component of the ecosystem and as an important link in the biological cycle, are very stable in urban environments and can retain the properties of natural analogues in the absence of significant anthropogenic impact, unlike living ground cover. To expressly indicate the impact of a megacity on forest ecosystems, it is proposed to use an integrated approach based on the analysis of a number of informative and most accessible indicators of grass cover and litter. It has been established that litter of pine plantations is more sensitive to the influence of the metropolis.

This article reports the findings from the first comprehensive empirical analysis of EE policy approaches. It posits a basic typology of different policy frameworks deployed under the ecosystem rubric. The findings suggest the concept is fraught with conceptual ambiguity and is predominantly (and rather crudely) used to promote ‘more’ entrepreneurship. The research suggests the concept is a ‘messy metaphor’, open to wide-ranging misinterpretation and misuse by policymakers. In terms of recommendations, eradicating network failures, avoiding crude policy isomorphism and tailoring bespoke interventions to the specific nature of EEs are viewed as key policy lessons.

Tropical peri-urban ecosystems are essential for the urban population’s well-being through the goods and services they provide. Unfortunately, these ecosystems are subjected to anthropogenic pressures for various reasons. This study aims to assess the diversity and structure of the peri-urban ecosystems that provide the most edible insects in Kinshasa. A total of 360 people were interviewed to identify the two insect species most frequently consumed. The tree inventory was carried out in 50 plots (2500 m2 each), of which 25 were in Acacia plantations, 10 were planted Milletia forests, and 15 were natural Millettia forests. The diameters of each tree, dbh ≥ 10 cm, were measured. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to distinguish the forest communities. Diversity indices were used to assess floristic variability and structural parameters were used to characterize forest stands. Two insects were identified as being the most commonly consumed in Kinshasa: Gonimbrasia jamesoni (28%) and Cirina forda (27%), found the in Acacia plantation, and in the planted Milletia forests and natural Milletti forest, respectively. The results indicate floristic (higher in the Acacia plantation) and structural variability between stands. The structure of the stands indicates good news for all forests, except the planted forest. The high frequency/dominance of A. auriculiformis and M. laurentii in the peri-urban ecosystems of Kinshasa would therefore be optimal conditions (under natural conditions) for good production of these two caterpillar species.

The article examines the transformation of social policy in countries that prioritize the use of digital technologies in public administration. State integrated platforms – ecosystems –that emerge in these countries serve as a basis for social interaction, using data on organizations and citizens of one or more countries interactively, which leads to changes in social policy. The main changes of this kind include convergence of state and corporate structures for managing social processes and individualization of the state’s interaction with people. The article identifies the social imbalances that have limited the creation of a global ecosystem of social management and become the driver for the emergence of several types of such ecosystems. The analysis demonstrates that implementation of business models of digital transformation of public administration in some countries retains the historical continuity of the principles that underpinned their social policy earlier. The author concludes that the partnership role of the corporate sector in setting goals for social development leads to formation of cross-border horizontally oriented ecosystems in countries with social-democratic and liberal traditions. In countries with etatist and paternalistic value orientations the striving to achieve digital sovereignty leads to the introduction of an hierarchical principle of ecosystem formation. Meanwhile, countries with similar historical continuity and value orientations develop various digital forms of realization of public goods – monetary or in the form of socially valued services. As a result, the study proposes a typology of public administration ecosystems built on two bases. The first is the institutional basis of digital transformation, which implies the consolidation of the leading role of the state or public-private partnership, and the second is the one concentrating on social policy supported by digital technologies.

The challenge for implementing an ecosystems approach to environmental decision-making processes, such as spatial planning, is to understand the range, nature and amount of ecosystem services currently provided and the potential for such service provision in the future. The ability to spatially represent ecosystems services is a critical element of the evidence base on which to make decisions about how physical space is used most effectively and sustainably, and the way people and activities are distributed at different spatial scales. This paper reports on the outcomes of a research project originally undertaken for the UK Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs which developed a methodology for mapping ecosystem services using GIS and readily available, existing land use/land cover datasets. Critical components of the methodology, in order to determine which datasets are appropriate for which services, are network analysis and stakeholder engagement techniques, to define the relevant typology of ecosystem services and their relationship to land use/land cover types. The methodology was developed and tested successfully in the context of green grid (green infrastructure) networks in a major UK regeneration area, the Thames Gateway, to the east of London, and its potential use in impact assessment further explored through a number of case studies.

The geomorphic and ecological degradation of streams resulting from urbanization is well recognized. Recent reviews have hypothesized variability in ecological response to urbanization among stream types and among regions with varying climate and catchment soil and geology. Testing such hypotheses will be aided by the use of consistent metrics of the primary processes that drive urban-induced degradation of streams. We thus developed an urban typology distinguishing the common classes of urban land and water management that are hypothesized to have different effects on stream ecosystems. In developing the typology, we identify and emphasize the importance of step changes (thresholds) in the hydrologic consequences of urbanization, the often-unrecognized massive increase in drainage density of urban catchments, the difficulty in setting reference condition for many cities and the resulting difficulties in comparing responses to urbanization among cities. We critically assess the evidence for variability in responses to urbanization and its causes, and conclude that there are few studies demonstrating intra- or inter-regional differences in response to urbanization that have adequately accounted for the influence of potential differences in urban land and water management. We use the urban typology to propose metrics to allow such accounting, which we argue is necessary to advance management for stream protection and restoration.

The present research aims at estimating the capacity of the ecosystems in Zlatitsa Municipality to provide certain types of ecosystem services. The case study area is located in the western parts of Bulgaria, and it is a part of Sofia Province. The basis of the study is the CORINE Land Cover (CLC) classification (2018) upon which the Maes typology has been built. Fourteen (14) CLC Classes were distinguished in Zlatitsa Municipality, as well as five (5) ecosystem types. The capacity of the latter to provide ecosystem services was evaluated, based on a six-grade scale. The results of the study include maps of the provisioning, regulating, and cultural service capacity of the area, as well as an overall map of all of them. The research outcomes provided successful results, focusing on the importance of the provision of ecosystem services. They can be applied as a framework for similar studies in the neighboring municipalities.

Groundwater contributes to the maintenance of the functioning of ecosystems, through aspects related to hydrodynamics and chemical composition. Groundwater-dependent ecosystems (GDE) also offer a wide spectrum of ecosystem services to populations; therefore, their identification and mapping, which is the focus of the present paper, is of high value to environmental policies; for example, WFD envisages protecting both water bodies and GDE. An ecosystem dependence index was applied to proceed with this task in the Azores archipelago, being estimated by adding the values of three partial variables (spring density; wetlands/lakes; river baseflow) over a 10 by 10 m2 grid; with this methodology avoiding pitfalls due to lack of data. The results enabled the identification and mapping of five GDE, in Flores and São Miguel islands, supported by only three of the 28 groundwater bodies delimited in the Azores RBD. Those groundwater bodies are considered to have a good status according to the WFD requirements; thus, GDE, regardless of their typology, are not at risk of deterioration as a result of the interaction with groundwater. Nevertheless, other studies have shown that some GDE are in conflicting ecological areas and require specific management and protection measures, coupling land use and water resource planning.

PurposeThe entrepreneurial ecosystem (EE) literature is dominated by conceptual studies with insufficient theoretical foundations and empirical evidence on the micro-level. This study aims to explore the largely overlooked question of what the drivers that motivate small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to participate in an ecosystem are.Design/methodology/approachThe study adopts a qualitative exploratory approach. The empirical data consists of 19 semi-structured interviews with top management of SMEs in the health tech ecosystem in Finland. The data were analyzed using a thematic content analysis.FindingsThis study reveals a typology of drivers that motivate SMEs to participate in an ecosystem. These include social drivers (networking and cooperation and communication and knowledge sharing), resource drivers (access to resources, formal and informal support and market access) and cognitive drivers (shared goals and common values).Research limitations/implicationsThe study contributes to the EE research by highlighting the drivers that motivate health tech SMEs to become members of the local ecosystem. It suggests that managers and entrepreneurs need to be aware of the factors related to social, resource and cognitive drivers to ensure the future success of their business.Originality/valueThe study draws evidence from a micro-level perspective which enriches the understanding of the EE phenomenon. It also explores an increasingly relevant but under-researched field, the health tech ecosystem.

This paper offers a paradigmatic analysis of digital application marketplaces for advancing information systems research on digital platforms and ecosystems. We refer to the notion of digital application marketplace, colloquially called ‘appstores,’ as a platform component that offers a venue for exchanging applications between developers and end users belonging to a single or multiple ecosystems. Such marketplaces exhibit diversity in features and assumptions, and we propose that examining this diversity, and its ideal types, will help us to further understand the relationship between application marketplaces, platforms, and platform ecosystems. To this end, we generate a typology that distinguishes four kinds of digital application marketplaces: closed, censored, focused, and open marketplaces. The paper also offers implications for actors wishing to make informed decisions about their relationship to a particular digital application marketplace.

Action 5 of the European Union's Biodiversity Strategy to 2020 asks that Member States map and assess the state of ecosystems and their services in their national territory. Policymakers and stakeholders of these countries frequently ask why this work is necessary. This article shows that this question can be broken down into a number of specific questions which, in turn, bring specific requests for knowledge and guidance to the surface. This paper develops a typology of questions and identifies the following five categories: knowledge requests, policy support questions, questions on resources and responsibilities, application questions and technical and methodological guidance questions. Next, this typology of questions is framed in an adaptive policy cycle and coupled to a set of available solutions.

In the Maltese Islands, insufficient attention has been paid to vermetid reefs, endemic Mediterranean bioconstructions widely distributed along the southern part of the basin. As a result, this is a largely-overlooked coastal ecosystem despite the multitude ofecosystem services it provides. The perennial urban development in the Maltese Islands calls for the adoption of urgent action to protect coastal habitats, in particular bioconstructions that increase biodiversity and contribute to mitigating the effects of climatechange. The objective of our study was to extensively document the presence and typology of the vermetid reef ecosystems alongthe coast of Malta and Gozo, assessing the occurrence of putative anthropogenic threats on the same ecosystem. Quantitative measurements were additionally taken to morphologically characterize the recorded bioconstructions. Furthermore, we tested thehuman pressure effect on the density of vermetid individuals and associated biodiversity. “True” trottoirs were only documentedalong the south-east coast of Malta, where unfortunately land reclamation projects are expected to be implemented. Although no direct relation between a number of assessed human activities and the density of vermetid individuals was reported in the current study, we suggest the conduction of further studies to investigate the influence of specific disturbances on the conservation status of this ecosystem. This study expands the existing knowledge on the status of vermetid reefs in the Maltese Islands and calls for management and conservation actions to preserve this bioconstruction.
