Simplicial homology is a useful tool to access important information about the topology of wireless networks such as : coverage and connectivity. In this thesis, we model the wireless network as a random deployment of cells. Firstly, we introduce an algorithm to construct the Cech complex, which describes exactly the topology of the network. Then, the Cech complex is used in further applications. The first application is to save transmission power for wireless networks. This application not only maximizes the coverage of the network but also minimizes its transmission power. At the same time, the coverage and the transmission power are optimized. The second application is to balance the traffic load in wireless networks. This application controls the transmission power of each cell in the network, always under the coverage constraint. With the controlled transmission power, the users are redirected to connect to the lower traffic load cells. Consequentially, the balanced traffic load is obtained for the network

Abstact 1 - Over the past few years, mobile broadband technologies and speeds have greatly increased in the European Union, reaching an ever larger share of broadband consumers. These changes have implications for broadband market competition. In the past, mobile services offered slow but mobile internet whereas fixed services offered faster but fixed internet. Fixed and mobile broad-band were therefore obviously complementary services. While mobile broadband speeds have significantly increased over the latest years, fixed broadband is remaining rather a fixed technol-ogy. Consequently, if mobile broadband becomes fast enough considering some consumers’ needs, we believe that the same consumers will choose to use only the mobile broadband tech-nology (who by itself offers high-speed and mobility) instead of both fixed and mobile broad-band technologies. As a result, we may observe an increasing trend towards fixed to mobile substitution. Our study investigates empirically this trend. More specifically, it analyzes the im-pact of mobile broadband technology evolution - through 4G adoption - on fixed to mobile sub-stitution in the 28 European countries from 2009 until 2015. The few studies examining this sub-ject show that fixed to mobile substitution exists although none of these studies analyze the evo-lution of this substitution. The results confirm a significant existence of a fixed to mobile substi-tution in the EU, and show that this substitution is more than doubled when a country adopts 4G. The growing competitive pressure from mobile operators also provides fixed operators with incentives to acquire – or merge with – mobile operators. This fact should be a concern for policy makers as it could have harmful consequences for competition and investment on the broad-band market.
Abstract 2 - Whereas open science – i.e. publishing articles in scientific journals – had been largely studied on the academic side, there is still a need to explore the subject on the industry side. This study spe-cifically analyzes the role of academic institutions in firms’ scientific publications and uses a novel approach to explore the subject. Publications issued from collaborations with academic institutions are indeed differentiated from other publications. The first type of publications is considered as an indicator of firms’ collaborative activities with academic institutions whereas the second type of publications is considered as the result of firms’ strategies and/or firms’ capa-bilities to publish. This study provides evidence that industry publications are a valuable signal to attract academic partners. In addition, this study provides evidence that potential academic partners are more willing to team up with firms’ researchers who have proven their ability to achieve high-quality research/publications without the help of academic partners. Finally, the study provides evidence that past successful collaborations with academic partners lead the firm to reiterate such collaborations in the short term (2 years max.).
Abstract 3 - The objective of this study is twofold. First, it provides further knowledge on the subject of prof-itability of industry science/publications as it is not clear yet whether industry sci-ence/publications are profitable to firms. Second, it considers the central role of academic part-ners in the profitability of firms’ scientific publications as previous empirical studies do not con-sider such role. To investigate the subject, we perform several regressions with firms profits as dependent variable. The results provide evidence that the publication of scientific articles is not a profitable activity in itself (as it was demonstrated in two previous studies). Collaborations with academic institutions are the real basis of profitable results; the production of scientific publica-tions is only one of the consequences of these collaborations. This study also shows that not all collaborations are profitable, only collaborations in high-tech sectors that lead to high-quality publications lead to larger profits. Indeed, in their quest for survival and profitability, companies competing in high-tech sectors often need the help of academic partners to exploit scientific knowledge. On average, a rise of about 7% in successful collaborations (leading to high-quality publications) raises the profit of high-tech firms by about 1%. -
Abstract 4 - This chapter analyzes the factors influencing the quality of the output of I-A collaborations ap-proximated by the quality of the I-A co-publications. More specifically it analyzes two subjects that are typically complicated to study empirically because of a lack of available data: (1) it compares US and EU I-A partnerships and (2) it discusses if and how internet is a useful tool in I-A collaborations. The results empirically confirm that EU universities are less efficient partners than US universities when collaborating with the private sector. This study also demonstrates a much larger gap between EU and US academic partners in high-tech sectors. Finally, the results provide evidence that broadband is a useful tool for international I-A collaborations although broadband is less important in the success of I-A international collaborations in high-tech sectors compared to lower-tech sectors.

Annotation:
The mobile telecommunications industry continues to be at the epicentre for growth, innovation, and disruption for virtually all other industries. It is one of the keys to sustainable economic development especially in developing and emerging economies. Over the past two decades, the industry has been very dynamic, experiencing high growth rates. This paper uses econometric models to investigate the impact of market structure on market outcomes such as mobile prices and investment in emerging economies. This is done using quarterly panel data on fifteen emerging economies across four continents for the period between 2006 and 2015. The Herfindahl-Hirschman index (HHI) and the number of operators are used to proxy market structure and effective price per minute paid by consumers and capital expenditure per subscriber are used to proxy mobile prices and investment respectively. Empirical results indicate that increase in market concentration increases market prices. Results also indicate an inverted-U relationship between market concentration and investment. These results indicate that there is a trade-off between static and dynamic efficiency which means that competition in mobile telecommunications reduces both market prices and investments.

This dissertation proposes four empirical essays on bank stability, financial digitalisation, the informal economy, and natural disasters. These themes represent economic policy challenges. The first chapter looks at the impact of bank competition on credit risk in Sub-Saharan Africa. We show that increased competition is likely to both enhance and lessen the quality of banks’ loans portfolios. The second chapter investigates whether the rapid expansion of mobile financial services helps reduce the informal sector in emerging and developing countries. Our results indicate that such financial innovation can be considered as a powerful tool to formalize economies. The third chapter examines the effect of education on the informal economy in Africa. We underline the importance of a balanced educational system between general and vocational education to reduce the size of the informal sector. The last chapter focuses on the determinants of natural disasters. It highlights the role of weather, economic and structural factors, and climate change in the incidence of natural disasters

Annotation:
International roaming is a hot topic in the telecommunications industry. Many countries have witnessed a downward trend in mobile domestic prices. On the contrary, international roaming prices remained reluctant to follow the domestic trend. In Europe, the service has been regulated with price cap since 2007, and regulation is maintained for years to come. The existing literature on the economics of international roaming has focused on theoretical modelling, which assumes a uniform retail price (i.e. common across visited networks). The main finding is that wholesale and retail prices rise with the number of visited networks. Additionally, vertical merger is found unprofitable; and home network steering does not cause downward pressure on wholesale prices. We found that the assumption of uniform retail pricing leads to results that are inconsistent with wholesale competition because visited networks appear in the demand as complements rather than substitutes. We present theoretical models that match the existing literature’s findings, and compare results to the case whereby the retail price is discriminatory (i.e. differs by visited networks). With discriminatory retail, substitutability of networks reduces prices, and the incentive for vertical merger exists. In a steering game, steering is found able to reduce wholesale prices; and networks alliances are formed in equilibrium. The empirical literature on international roaming is limited to few industry studies. We use an aggregated dataset on prices and quantities for networks visited by roamers from one major mobile provider whose subscribers travel a lot across the world, Etisalat. The study period witnessed a retail price shift from discriminatory to uniform. The main findings are: (1) competition, as measured by the number of visited networks, reduces wholesale price; (2) traffic steering is effective, especially towards preferred networks (alliance and cross-owned); (3) only alliance networks offer wholesale discounts; and (4) demand is more elastic than crude industry studies.

Financial inclusion play a key role for a country's economic growth for poverty eradication and multiple studies have been made on how to achieve it. With a cellphone as the most accessible technology, it enables pervasively unbanked people to pay bills, save, withdraw and deposit money. In this study we aim to analyze if mobile money has an impact on economic growth in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) since it has expanded significantly and is used by nearly half a billion people in SSA. We divided SSA into four regions and used panel data to examine the impact over seven years (2012-2018). Mobile money is divided into three variables: active agents, active accounts, and total transactions in relationship to GDP per capita. Because of the difference in mobile money usage between the regions we divide all three components with the region's population. We conclude that total transactions have a small but positive and significant impact on economic growth while active accounts and active agents shows a positive but insignificant result. In our analysis we proceed to discuss different factors of mobile money that can contribute to a positive impact on economic growth such as remittances and interest-bearing accounts.

Mobile network operators are currently faced with a number of challenges at the market. The revenues from voice services have decreased the last couple of years. Mobile broadband access services are being adopted and the demand is increasing. The increasing traffic volumes require investments in order to increase the network capacity. This development leads to a large interest in network solutions that can offer high capacity and low cost. Besides the use of more efficient radio access technology mobile network operators use strategies for network deployment and operation involving other market actors. Operators share networks with competitors or outsource network deployment and operation to other companies, e.g. suppliers of network equipment. In these examples the mobile operators cooperate about the networks, the relations to end-users are the same as if the operator would operate the network on its own. However, in other areas other actors enter the market for mobile services where mobile operators traditionally have been the dominant player. Handset manufacturers and Internet companies offer value added services and applications to the end-users. They also establish relations with customers of the mobile operators. Hence, mobile operators look into new technical solutions and services in order to reduce costs and find new services and sources of revenues. Many of the networking solutions and services require that the operator cooperates with some other actor. In this PhD thesis cooperation strategies of mobile network operators are analyzed including cooperation with competitors, customers and different types of partners. The partner can be a provider of a non-telecom service like public transportation, financial institutes or third parties taking intermediary roles. The main research questions in the thesis revolves around why and how mobile operators cooperate. The drivers for cooperation and the way the cooperation is organized is analyzed for a number of cases. Three types of services and markets are analyzed: - Public mobile broadband access services - Services and solutions for indoor wireless access - Mobile payment, ticketing and contactless services A number of technical solutions, business concepts and different types of cooperation and business scenarios have been investigated. Two overall research questions that are applicable for all cases of cooperation are identified for the analysis. - What are the main drivers for a specific type of cooperation? - In what ways can the actors organize the cooperation?

The thesis examines the evolution of mobile transceiver architecture using the management framework pioneered by Carliss Baldwin and Kim Clark. The thesis begins with an introduction and an overview of the wireless communication value network. The author subsequently distills the salient aspects of the Baldwin and Clark management framework predicated on bottleneck analysis, modularity, and return on invested capital. The prominence of bottleneck analysis motivates a technical chapter that summarizes the bottlenecks relevant to all wireless communication systems, namely data rate, error rate, and battery life. A brief chapter discussing the dominant wireless communication network architecture, TDMA and CDMA, corroborates the bottleneck analysis and effectively assigns the error rate and battery life bottlenecks to the handset ODM and supplier layers of the value network. With a clear vision of the competitive bottlenecks, the evolution of transceiver architecture is presented in the context of the aforementioned management framework. Through this analysis, design power is shown to have passed from handset ODMs to integrated circuit suppliers. A noteworthy byproduct of the analysis is the genesis of the bottleneck tree whereby new layers of bottlenecks are emergent upon a firm's selection of a particular design architecture that targets the strategic bottleneck layer. Finally, the thesis is concluded with a summary of the ground covered and the author's opinions of how the architecture may yet evolve and the future nature of the competitive landscape.

This thesis aims to explore the concept of network effects between platforms and mobile games by analyzing economic theories on network economics, information goods, two-side market, and the game industry itself. There is previous research on gaming, but it deals with online gaming and consoles, not “mobile” specifically, which is why this thesis is specifically dealing with mobile games. Over the past decade, the game industry has been changing because of advancements in technology, and the changing demography of who plays games. This makes the gaming industry economically interesting from the perspective of the business models, pricing structure, and the relationship of the information good with the platform it exists on. These are concepts that are discussed throughout the thesis. Network economics is discussed at length because it is what aided in answering the question of whether or not there are network effects between the platforms and mobile games. Although it does explain the connection between number of users and software variety, it was necessary to expand on the concepts of information goods and two-side market because these explain the specific phenomena of selling software through a dedicated platform. In order to strengthen the economic theory and previous research, an interview with a mobile game company was conducted. The questions revolved around how it developed the games, how it sets prices, and its behavior with the platforms. In addition to supporting theory, the interview also served the purpose of verifying whether or not the descriptions of the game industry found in literature really occur. In conclusion, the interview answers did support the theories and the literature, with the exception of the company being a price-taker. In conclusion, the literature, previous research, and the interview, all support the concept that there are network effects between mobile games and platforms. Although the thesis statement is supported, this does not mean that it is proven due to a lack of empirical analysis, and more case studies.

Annotation:
Second economy people in developing countries are people living in communities that are underserved in terms of basic amenities and social services. Due to literacy challenges and user accessibility problems in rural communities, it is often difficult to design user interfaces that conform to the capabilities and cultural experiences of low-literacy rural community users. Rural community users are technologically illiterate and lack the knowledge of the potential of information and communication technologies. In order to embrace new technology, users will need to perceive the user interface and application as useful and easy to interact with. This requires proper understanding of the users and their socio-cultural environment. This will enable the interfaces and interactions to conform to their behaviours, motivations as well as cultural experiences and preferences and thus enhance usability and user experience. Mobile phones have the potential to increase access to information and provide a platform for economic development in rural communities. Rural communities have economic potential in terms of agriculture and micro-enterprises. Information technology can be used to enhance socio-economic activities and improve rural livelihood. We conducted a study to design user interfaces for a mobile commerce application for micro-entrepreneurs in a rural community in South Africa. The aim of the study was to design mobile interfaces and interaction techniques that are easy to use and meet the cultural preferences and experiences of users who have little to no previous experience of mobile commerce technology. And also to explore the potentials of information technologies rural community users, and bring mobile added value services to rural micro-entrepreneurs. We applied a user-centred design approach in Dwesa community and used qualitative and quantitative research methods to collect data for the design of the user interfaces (graphic user interface and voice user interface) and mobile commerce application. We identified and used several interface elements to design and finally evaluate the graphical user interface. The statistics analysis of the evaluation results show that the users in the community have positive perception of the usefulness of the application, the ease of use and intention to use the application. Community users with no prior experience with this technology were able to learn and understand the interface, recorded minimum errors and a high level of v precision during task performance when they interacted with the shop-owner graphic user interface. The voice user interface designed in this study consists of two flavours (dual tone multi-frequency input and voice input) for rural users. The evaluation results show that community users recorded higher tasks successes and minimum errors with the dual tone multi-frequency input interface than the voice only input interface. Also, a higher percentage of users prefer the dual tone multi-frequency input interface. The t-Test statistical analysis performed on the tasks completion times and error rate show that there was significant statistical difference between the dual tone multi-frequency input interface and the voice input interface. The interfaces were easy to learn, understand and use. Properly designed user interfaces that meet the experience and capabilities of low-literacy users in rural areas will improve usability and users‟ experiences. Adaptation of interfaces to users‟ culture and preferences will enhance information services accessibility among different user groups in different regions. This will promote technology acceptance in rural communities for socio-economic benefits. The user interfaces presented in this study can be adapted to different cultures to provide similar services for marginalised communities in developing countries

Economic development is often associated with the adoption of new technologies. The three chapters in this dissertation ask how societies can achieve efficient adoption of these technologies. The first two chapters analyze the dramatic spread of a new communication technology---the mobile phone---in the East African country of Rwanda, using transaction data. Many technologies important for the modern economy are network goods; these goods tend to diffuse inefficiently in the absence of careful policy design. The first chapter introduces a new method to estimate the value of a network good, and to simulate the effects of policies. Economic actors also must decide whether a given technology is worth adopting. The second chapter analyzes how individuals learn about a new technology, by tracing the adoption of a new, cheaper mobile phone plan. The third chapter considers the side effects of new technologies, specifically, how innovation affects dimensions of quality that are not observed by consumers.

The vision for smart sustainable cities is one whereby urban sensing is core to optimising city operation which in turn improves citizen contentment. Wireless Sensor Networks are envisioned to become pervasive form of data collection and analysis for smart cities but deployment of millions of inter-connected sensors in a city can be cost-prohibitive. Given the ubiquity and ever-increasing capabilities of sensor-rich mobile devices, Wireless Sensor Networks with Mobile Phones (WSN-MP) provide a highly flexible and ready-made wireless infrastructure for future smart cities. In a WSN-MP, mobile phones not only generate the sensing data but also relay the data using cellular communication or short range opportunistic communication. The largest challenge here is the efficient transmission of potentially huge volumes of sensor data over sometimes meagre or faulty communications networks in a cost-effective way. This thesis investigates distributed data forwarding schemes in three types of WSN-MP: WSN with mobile sinks (WSN-MS), WSN with mobile relays (WSN-HR) and Mobile Phone Sensing Systems (MPSS). For these dynamic WSN-MP, realistic models are established and distributed algorithms are developed for efficient network performance including data routing and forwarding, sensing rate control and and pricing. This thesis also considered realistic urban sensing issues such as economic incentivisation and demonstrates how social network and mobility awareness improves data transmission. Through simulations and real testbed experiments, it is shown that proposed algorithms perform better than state-of-the-art schemes.

Mobile operators passed through many phases in the market over the last several years, since the beginning of mobile broadband services. When the first smart phone was introduced in 2007, it caused a huge increase in the traffic and the users demand kept on increasing. This exponential growth has led to a severe shortage in the available capacity which caused that mobile users don’t have their promised quality of service and coverage. Operators began to put different scenarios for the next-generation mobile networks, putting in consideration the expected increase in the number of users along with their high demand. As a new proposed solution to the scarcity of empty spectrum slots, operating in higher frequency bands (noted as mmwave) emerged as a solution that will provide larger bandwidths with lower prices for the license. Mmwave will provide users with high data rates but on the other hand, has a low penetration rate that can be fixed by increasing the base stations. Another technique for the operators to follow is that they share their own spectrum with each other, by changing the classic way of exploiting the spectrum which proved a low efficiency and high cost, operators can increase their spectrum and coverage with lower cost.To get a clear understanding of how the operators will decide their future strategies, a technical analysis of the new strategies will not be enough, a technical one also will make it clearer and will help the operators in making the decision. The objective of this thesis is to perform a Techno-Economic analysis to get a full image of the system performance. Our system will consist of 2 operators working in mmwave band with antennas equipped with directional beamforming and the base station transmitters will consist of small cells serving outdoor users only. The main question we want to answer is what will be the effect of decreasing the beamwidth on the system performance and when the operators will need to share their spectrum with each other. The performance evaluation will be based on measuring the downlink achievable rate. As we will be performing an economical evaluation, the number of base stations required in each strategy will be an important parameter to evaluate its economic feasibility and cost savings. The different scenarios will include variations of the beamwidth and coordination between the operators with an objective of seeking the best performance along with cost savings. The results should give us a clear look on how the operators will decide for a certain strategy depending on downlink data rate as a KPI and the number of deployed base stations as a limiting factor.

Mobile penetration rates have already exceeded 100% in many countries. Nowadays, mobile phones are part of our daily lives not only for voice or short text messages but for a plethora of multimedia services they provide via their internet connection. Thus, mobile broadband has become the main driver for the evolution of mobile networks and it is estimated that until 2018 the mobile broadband traffic will exceed the level of 15 exabytes. This estimation is a threat to the current mobile networks which have to significantly improve their capacity performance. Furthermore, another important aspect is the fact that 80% of the mobile broadband demand comes from indoor environments which add to the signal propagation the burden of building penetration loss. Keeping these facts in mind, there are many potential solutions that can solve the problem of the increasing indoor mobile broadband demand. In general, there are two approaches; improve the existing macro-cellular networks by for example enhancing them with carrier aggregation or enter the buildings and deploy small cell solutions such as femtocells or WiFi APs. Both the academia and the industry have already shown interest in these two approaches demonstrating the importance of the problem. Various research papers and reports have been produced describing the technologies and presenting their capability to satisfy the perpetual increase in mobile broadband demand. However, according to the best of our knowledge, no research has been done so far that compares the two different approaches with a techno-economic perspective. Hence, the contribution of this thesis project is a holistic techno-economic study of the two approaches (macrocells with carrier aggregation and small cells) to encounter the tremendous growth of indoor mobile broadband demand. In order to achieve this goal, an indoor deployment scenario is presented and the different indoor and outdoor solutions are applied and studied in terms of radio performance (capacity) as well as total cost of ownership. The final result of the project is a comparison of the two approaches as well as a proposed strategy to deal with the problem. The result will help network operators to plan the evolution of their networks, vendors to focus their production as well as regulatory bodies to set the rules and supervise operators’ deployments. The simulations have shown that all the examined technologies are capable of supporting the mobile broadband demand of the studied scenario but macrocells enhanced with carrier aggregation is the most cost effective solution. However, if the requirements for guaranteed data rate and thus the QoS provided increase then eventually MNOs will have to abandon outdoor solutions and extend their infrastructure inside the buildings where the mobile data traffic is mainly generated.

The increasing share of renewable energy especially wind energy leads to increased share of unpredictable and varying energy into the grid. This leads to congestion in the grid which ultimately results in wind curtailment. In Germany in 2015 alone more than 4000 GWh of wind energy was curtailed. On the other hand, off grid energy requirements for event industry especially concerts and festivals, rely heavily on diesel generators to fulfill their power requirements. This thesis investigates a unique use case for the mobile storage application. The batteries are used to utilize the curtailed wind energy for off-grid applications like festivals and concerts in Germany. The batteries are charged at the wind farm during the duration of curtailment and once they are fully charged, the batteries are transported to the location of concert or an event to provide clean energy. The batteries or storage system used for this case have a capacity of 1.5 MWh and the whole system is constructed in a standard shipping container to allow convenient transportation. According to the findings of this study, the proposed use case can lead to a significant CO2 emission reduction, a single storage system could save up to about 8.4 million kg of CO2, at the events and festivals. Furthermore, it could help in renewable energy integration by providing clean wind energy, that is otherwise curtailed, to festivals and concerts. This study identifies a wind farm with most curtailed energy in Germany with total curtailment duration accounting for about 32% of the time in the year 2017. The technical model, simulated in MATALB/Simulink, successfully charged the battery storage system without any bottleneck. The levelized cost of storage was found to be in comparison with the levelized cost of diesel generators. A single storage system has an ability save up to 8.4 million kg of CO2 emissions. The study further proposes policy suggestions to promote such innovative use case.

Recent years have witnessed a growing interest in analyzing the huge amount of human behavioral data generated by new technologies such as mobile phones, social media and credit cards. These technologies leave a trail of "digital breadcrumbs" that allow us to have new quantitative insights that may reveal patterns of individual and group behaviors. Moreover, it allows us to better understand human behavior at a fine-grained resolution and for periods of time that were previously inconceivable. Researchers can now observe human behavior, ask research questions and run experiments in ways that were simply impossible in the recent past due to qualitative methods that, despite their undeniable benefits, proved to be time and resource consuming and therefore difficult to apply to large scale studies. Studying social interaction and social networks extracted from these data sources, allow us to understand not only individual behaviors and their characteristics, but also to observe the relationships between individuals, the structure, the content and their dynamics over long periods of time. Given the capacity of mobile phones to capture real observations of communications between people, we took advantage of the data collected from these devices to further explore and investigate human behavior. Specifically, in this dissertation, we (i) present the Mobile Territorial Lab (MTL) project and illustrate the advantages of using a living lab approach to collect a longitudinal set of data from a target group of parents; (ii) investigate how the personality dispositions of an individual influence how (s)he manages her/his social network; (iii) investigate whether and how the behavior of an individual as sensed through her/his mobile phone behavior is related to the future adoption and use of the leading mobile money service M-Pesa.

Mobile telecommunications networks provide the ability to access the internet and use telephony services, where the infrastructure exists. Because of its mobile nature a customer can always connect to the internet, even when not in the comfort of their home, unlike the case with fixed-line services. This paper studies the impact of mobile telecommunications investment on economic growth in South Africa. To test the impact of mobile telecommunications investment on economic growth, the dissertation examines the development of mobile telecommunications infrastructure in South Africa and the relationship between mobile communications infrastructure investment (MCII) on economic growth. It is hypothesised that MCII has a relationship with economic growth. The methodology employed by this study is the autoregressive distributed lags (ARDL) approach with secondary data sourced from the World Bank Group and Global System Mobile Association (GSMA) databases over the period 1994 to 2016. To model the relationship, the study used a neoclassical growth model with proxies for economic growth as gross domestic product (GDP); capital as mobile operator capital expenditure and gross capital formation; and labour as the labour force and the unemployment rate. Results of the study showed that there was a unidirectional Granger causality between GDP and MCII and therefore no bidirectional causal relationship between MCII and GDP. Furthermore, using the ARDL approach found no cointegration between the variables and consequently no long run relationship. Producing the short run model as a VAR (2) model using the Akaike information criteria (AIC) lag selection also resulted in no significant relationship between MCII and GDP. This result has very important implications for policy recommendations to government and for development. Firstly, government should investigate why there is no significant impact of MCII on GDP because this relationship does exist in other markets. From these findings, government can develop and adopt policies which could produce a positive effect of MCII on GDP.

Sogeti has together with Lawson developed a mobile solution, called EASY, for Toyota Material Handling Europe (TMHE), which their 2000 service technicians are now using. This report investigates which needs smaller companies have of mobile solutions and if savings can be done by using a mobile solution. The investigation focuses on companies with around 10-70 employees who work in the field and who do not have a mobile solution today. The report discusses if EASY in modified form can be a solution for smaller companies: if smaller companies can be more effective, increase cash flow, increase quality in the work and decrease paperwork by investing in a mobile solution. Finally it investigates if there is a market for mobile solutions for smaller companies.

Three interviews with smaller companies have been done to examine how they work today and if they can be in need of a mobile solution. The companies have been analyzed and calculations have been done to see if it can be profitable to the companies to invest in a mobile solution.

This report shows, based on the performed net present value investment assessment that it is today not profitable for the companies to invest in a mobile solution. For this to change, the development cost needs to be shared between two or more companies to decrease the total investment cost. For the smallest of the examined companies with seven employees it is according to the calculations still not profitable to invest in a mobile system.

Even with such a diverse set of actors, this paper will argue that it is irrational not to have a functioning mobile banking ecosystem that can provide a full range of financial services to the poor. As seen by current public and private actors that lead the charge in creating mobile banking ecosystems, all actors can substantially benefit. With three billion unbanked poor, both traditional banks and microfinance banks will have significant opportunities to massively increase clientele in previously un-bankable and remote areas in a profitable way. Telecoms will be able to provide a wider array of services to attract and retain customers as traditional markets become more saturated and competitive as well as receive positive PR for providing services to the poor. On the public side, governments should see this as an opportunity to provide financial access to their citizens without having to provide the services themselves. Finally, previously unbanked clients stand to gain the most as they will receive access to convenient, reliable and flexible services that fit their needs in ways that were impossible before mobile banking technology. This paper, however, will not prescribe a single model for mobile banking. Differences in political systems, economy, geography, demographics, state of development, nature of financial systems, profile of clients, and regulatory environment make it impossible to create a "one size fits all" solution. The correct model for a functioning mobile banking ecosystem depends on the specific market environment of each individual country. Lessons can be learned from top emerging players in developing countries for a better overall understanding of the interests of the actors and how to create a framework that allows for these interests to co-exist. This understanding is critical if mobile banking is to eventually have an important global impact on financial inclusion for the poor.

There is growing enthusiasm about the role of mobile money in promoting economic growth and its contribution to poverty alleviation via opportunities for savings, credit, investments, and micro insurance. However, the link between mobile money and economic growth has yet to receive wide empirical examination in developing economies. The Nigerian government has embarked on various interventions, often associated with high costs, to promote the adoption of mobile money services. Whether or not these efforts link to economic growth can only be established through research. This study has aimed at exploring the nature of the relationship between mobile money development and economic growth in Nigeria. It has used a quarterly volume of mobile money transactions and real GDP as proxies for mobile money development and economic growth respectively. The study employed the ARDL bounds tests techniques by Pesaran, Shin, and Smith (2001), along with Augmented Dickey-Fuller tests and causality tests developed by Granger (1969) on time series data from Q12010 to Q42016. Data was obtained from the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) statistics database and the Nigerian National Bureau of Statistics. Evidence of a long run relationship between mobile money and economic growth was established. The causality pattern discovered has revealed that changes in economic growth have shown a significant influence on mobile money but not vice versa. It was specifically found that with each 0.8 million Naira increase in Nigeria’s GDP, a million increases in mobile money transaction occurred. It was recommended that Nigeria’s policy makers should focus on policies with stronger effects on economic growth, spill-over effects of which would promote mobile money penetration in the long run. Future research may concentrate on identifying the specific areas with stronger effects on economic growth for the attention of policy makers and opinion formers. It was suggested that the scope of the study be expanded to cover wider periods and more countries within sub-Saharan Africa.

In the era of rapid technology development it is only a matter of time when majority of devices will become inter-connected. At that point a concept of Internet of Things will become a reality, and leveraging on a true Machine-to- Machine (M2M) communication will be possible. Being able to monitor electricity spending, having your medical condition sent to your personal doctor, knowing when you will need to change the battery in your remote control or your window being able to close itself because it has started to rain, are only some of the perks of new connected world. However, these devices will need to be connected and one of the solutions will be mobile networks. In this master thesis, a total cost of ownership model has been used so as to compare different deployment strategies of mobile networks carrying M2M traffic and to determine the cost-efficient solution. Compared strategies mostly include small cell solutions due to their general better signal characteristics in an environment of future high data demand scenarios and flexibility. In order to do so, firstly a characterization of M2M traffic had to be researched and afterwards requirements of network using LTE technology were proposed. Finally, a partial discussion in regard to deployment strategies of mobile network has been done with an intake from Mobile Network Operators (MNOs). Moreover, aspects concerning present and future M2M market have been elaborated, again in retrospective to MNOs and in collaboration with other actors in the market.

Thesis (MPhil (Information Science))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009.
Mobile telephone subscription in developing countries has increased by more than 500 percent since 2005, with Africa experiencing the highest growth rate globally. Amongst Africa’s 306.5 million subscribers, recorded in 2008, an unexpectedly high adoption rate of the technology by poor, often illiterate rural communities is observed. Mobile telephony generally provides African rural users access to electronic communication for the first time. Providing access to communication, information and knowledge, mobile phones present a platform for economic and social interaction in rural Africa. The extent of the resulting positive socio-economic impact on the developing world has lead to mobile telephony increasingly being viewed as a potential development tool for the socio-economic upliftment of the rural poor. This thesis is inspired by the potential for value creation to end users of mobile telephony, leading to the proposition that the rapid expansion of mobile telephony in rural Africa can contribute significantly to the sustainability of these communities’ rural livelihoods. For this proposition to be valid, mobile telephony has to provide value beyond being communication tool. It has to provide value in income generating activities by increasing opportunities for access to financial and social capital with mobile business models appropriate to the rural African context. To assess the appropriateness of mobile value offerings, the rural African context was analyzed using the Sustainable Livelihoods Framework. Through multi-level analysis, the challenges and issues that influence the lives of the rural poor were explored and the dominant livelihood strategies in terms of income generating activities were identified. Apart from agricultural income streams, waged labor, migration and micro-entrepreneurial activities provide non-agricultural income streams. Creating an appropriate mobile business ecosystem for rural Africa requires the collaboration of a complex network of actors within a value constellation to co-produce value for the end users. Three conditional factors were identified for mobile telephony and emerging mobile business models to contribute successfully to sustainable livelihoods: adaptation of the technology by providers, user appropriation to make the technology their own and the assimilation of it into their livelihood strategies. These factors were researched for validation through the study of existing literature and reported case studies. It was found that these three conditional factors were unequivocally met. Firstly, the mobile telecommunication industry active in Africa is seen to successfully adapt and innovate solutions that are relevant to African rural communities’ vulnerabilities and livelihood strategies. Secondly, African mobile phone users have successfully adopted and appropriated mobile telephony to create value for themselves in their livelihood strategies, often independent of external interventions. They are claiming ownership of the technology and not merely using it as a communication tool. Thirdly, by assimilating mobile telephony into their livelihood strategies, value-creation within their income generating activities have been made possible. This value creation is impacting users’ social and financial capital positively. This thesis concludes that mobile telephony and emerging mobile business models are contributing to increasing African rural dwellers’ income generating potential, reducing their vulnerability to shocks, and providing them with a voice; thereby contributing to sustainable rural livelihoods.

Annotation:
With increasing mobile data demand there is a push towards heterogeneous networks. Small-scale operators (SSOs) of WLANs are becoming more prevalent, while Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) seek an outlet for their customers' data usage. These conditions prompt the need for an effective relationship between the two parties for the purpose of offloading cellular data traffic to WLANs in a way that is economically beneficial to all involved. This thesis presents a model of such a relationship, in which the SSO sets a strategic offloading price per subscriber and several MNOs can choose how many subscribers they want to offload in order to minimize their costs. We determine the optimal offloading price, identify how the SSO incorporates its own network's quality of service (QoS) into its price decision, and examine the way in which the MNOs' cost structures affect their ability to offload. This model can be applied by both MNOs and SSOs to make informed network deployment decisions, even before engaging in an offloading relationship.

The expectations and visions of the mobile phone in a development context is vast. International development institutions such as the World Bank, World Summit of the Information Society and International Telecommunication Union together with business conglomerates Google and Facebook have all invested their perspectives and visions of how the information and technology community should unfold in Uganda. How do their perspectives merge, interfere and contrast with the perspectives and visions of actors in Uganda?   The research objective is to explore the feminist and postcolonial technoscientific practices of the mobile phone in a Ugandan context. In my exploration I use ethnographic, participatory and narrative methods to study the imaginations and real-time uses of the mobile phone among actors in the ICT community.   I ask how actors in technology hubs in a low-income country relate to local innovations and design processes. Using a diffractive method for analysis I discuss how stories of corruption and responsibility are entangled with the development of mobile applications for the local context and the relation of designers and users.   I ask how the mobile phone is changing the socio-technical relations of gender, technology and development. Using diffraction, intersectionality and figuration as cartographic nodes for discussion I examine how the initiatives Girl Geek Kampala and Women in Technology Uganda renegotiate and reconstitute the understandings of gender and technology.   I ask how the mobile phone is creating and changing the infrastructuring in Uganda. I address the situatedness of the mobile infrastructuring by departing in the generic properties of an infrastructure by Star and Ruhleder (1996). The mobile phone is being used for entertainment purposes, developmental goals and marketing strategies and cannot be singled out as a device that represents a uniform vision of the information society. The examination of situatedness suggests that the strength of understanding the mobile infrastructure lies in the ambiguity of sustaining and transforming relations simultaneously, or better yet, a posthumanist performativity where human and non-human forms of agency are taken into account.    The entanglements of postcolonial information and communication technologies, feminist technoscience and design form the basis for a discussion on how we invite collaborations between policy makers, business entrepreneurs and civil society organizations that engage and shape the futures we are responsible for. My ambition is to develop ways of re-thinking social innovation and technology development, which interfere with linear economic development and raises the participatory paradigm in science and technology policy.

Cache County and the Wasatch Front, Utah have persistently experienced some of the nation’s worst air quality over the past decade. Elevated PM2.5 concentrations during wintertime “red air day” episodes frequently exceed the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS). We investigate the possible effects of two different economic policies in controlling these regional problems. Adapting a model originally developed to calculate the social investment necessary to control nationwide disease outbreaks, we estimate an optimal preventative capital stock (for example, investment in public transportation) of between $4.1 million and $14.1 million to control red air day episodes in Cache County, and $133 million to $1.6 billion dollars to control such episodes in the Wasatch Front. Further, we find that a seasonal gasoline tax rate of roughly $8 per gallon is necessary for policy makers in the Wasatch Front to impose at the pump if their goal is to maintain concentrations below the NAAQS on average during a typical winter-inversion season. This rate is roughly $2 more than the rate calculated for Cache County in a previously published study.

This dissertation that includes three quantitative essays on competition in the global mobile phone industry contributes to the field of competitive dynamics by examining strategic decisions and performance outcomes of 85 mobile phone vendors that operate in 46 countries from 2003 to 2015. In the first essay, we made an attempt to shed light on how institutional quality of an MNE’s host country affect the observability of actions of the MNE’s rivals in that country, that in turn affects the ability of the MNE to conduct an MMC strategy. The second essay contributes to the literature on patent enforcement strategies and antecedents of market entry decisions by highlighting the crucial role that escalating patent wars in a country play in deterring potential entrants. Third essay makes the first attempt to empirically show how escalating patent wars and IPR protection in a firm’s host country influence its performance in that country.

Preferences and behaviors for privacy management with mobile applications are difficult to capture. Previous measures are mostly based on self-report data, which often does not accurately predict actual user behavior. A deeper understanding was sought, gleaned from observing actual practices. This thesis analyzes 11,777 applications from the Google Play marketplace in order to determine the impact of privacy settings on purchase behavior. This was done by looking at the effect of the number of privacy concessions as well as the effect of individual concessions and category on number of downloads. It was found that users of paid applications do not have a preference for fewer privacy concessions. This study further reinforces the disconnect between the user's often stated preference for privacy and their actual behavior -- a discrepancy known as the “privacy paradox ”. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

The number of mobile devices in Portugal is superior to 1 per capita, being an attractive medium for the diffusion of banking services and consecutively increasing the convenience for clients. Therefore, this study intends to identify which factors potentiate and inhibit the intention to use mobile banking in Portugal. To achieve this, an online questionnaire was made having a base population of individuals older than 18 with a bank account. The results of the 213 respondents showed that, though most people have a mobile device with internet, 50% didn't use theirs bank app. By doing a multiple linear regression it was possible to identify that the predictive variables for the behavioral intention are perceived usefulness and social influence, and perceived risk as a barrier. The results of this study are useful to maximize the significant investment in these type of systems, in order to speed the adoption process. Management focus should be to foment a positive attitude and trust-based in the m-banking system.
