In this paper I present an ex post review of the failure of mobile private investment to contribute to the formation of competitive industry agglomerations in the UK's old industrial regions. The UK's industrial districts were the inspiration for the concept of external economies with which we understand the competitiveness of agglomerations of economic activity. Yet long-standing disarticulation between UK government inward investment, regional, industrial, and technology policy has ensured that mobile investment (notably, but not exclusively, foreign direct investment) has rarely contributed to the genesis of competitive agglomerations of new economic activity. Up until the 1980s the nature of mobile investment actually offered considerable scope for successive UK governments to leverage on synergies between it and established industry specialisms in the formation of viable new agglomerations of economic activity. Since the 1980s the difficulties of creating synergies between new mobile and existing industry arguably have increased, leaving new regional economic strategies as little more than wishful thinking regarding the formation of new agglomerations of knowledge-based economic activity.

The present document has for aim analyze the impact of the introduction of taxes in the industry of mobile telephony. A common tax in this sector is the canon received to finance the activities of taxation and supervision of the use of the radio spectrum. With such an end, the competition model between mobile networks proposed by Laffont, Rey and Tirole (1998), was modified introducing three different tax structures: a tax I specify in every minute of mobile telephony (TaxType I), a tax depending on the participation of market of each one of the networks (tax type II) and a tax lump-sum (Tax Type III). Since results of the model, obtains that the signatures manage to move the consumers the whole of the tax (diminishing the consumer surplus) when the tax structure is a type I and type II. On the contrary, when the tax is of type III, the prices and the quantities of balance, as well as the surplus of the consumer, they have been keeping constant.

In this contribution to the inaugural issue of Mobile Media & Communication, I draw upon recent work on mobiles in the global south to illustrate how the ‘third wave’ of mobile communication research requires a renewed focus upon the political and economic dimensions of infrastructures and the subversion of the system by individuals, communities and organizations. Inspired by Susan Leigh Star’s seminal work on the importance of studying infrastructures, I suggest that mobile media scholarship should look to the changes in the technical, social, political, regulatory and other forms of infrastructures that the first two waves’ focus upon novel uses and consumers often rendered invisible.

The growth of mobile workforces to support diversified resource extraction activities, compared to historically single-industry towns, represents a key change in rural and remote resource landscapes that has accelerated since the 1980s. Mobile workforces can present many opportunities to rural communities and economies. However, the capacity, viability and competitiveness of rural-based businesses to engage in supply chains serving mobile labour may be undermined by limited attention to how businesses manoeuvre downturns while maintaining a level of readiness to recover and scale-up in order to meet emerging mobile workforce needs. Drawing upon interviews with businesses in Fort St. John, British Columbia, Canada, our research uses the concept of resiliency to examine challenges and strategies associated with business capacity and agility to scale-up and scale-down in response to changing economic conditions associated with large-scale mobile workforces and related economic sectors. Our findings suggest that the capacity to scale-up and scale-down is shaped by capital, human resource and infrastructure strategies, inventory management and contract management strategies. Industry and state policies may also play a role supporting the conditions that will improve the agility, capacity and readiness of businesses operating in volatile resource-based economies.

Mobile payment has a pronounced impact on the consumption mode of various industries and provides new clues for sustainable consumption. This study aims to explore the role of perceived risk and perceived technology on sustainable consumption intention and behavior. Moreover, it proposes the structural equation model of mobile payment for sustainable consumption behavior. 574 participants from Chinese higher education institutions filled in the questionnaire. The bootstrapping method was used to solve the problem of mediating factors. Amos 26.0 helped to construct structural equation models. The study determined the negative effect of the perceived mobile payment risk on the perceived mobile payment usefulness, perceived mobile payment ease of use, and sustainable consumption intention. Moreover, the three variables have a particular buffer in the relationship between perceived mobile payment risk and sustainable consumption behavior. Furthermore, perceived mobile payment usefulness positively impacts sustainable consumption intention, and they have a chain-mediated effect on the relationship between perceived mobile payment risk and sustainable consumption behavior. The same effect also occurs in the relationship between perceived mobile payment ease of use and sustainable consumption intention.

Simplicial homology is a useful tool to access important information about the topology of wireless networks such as : coverage and connectivity. In this thesis, we model the wireless network as a random deployment of cells. Firstly, we introduce an algorithm to construct the Cech complex, which describes exactly the topology of the network. Then, the Cech complex is used in further applications. The first application is to save transmission power for wireless networks. This application not only maximizes the coverage of the network but also minimizes its transmission power. At the same time, the coverage and the transmission power are optimized. The second application is to balance the traffic load in wireless networks. This application controls the transmission power of each cell in the network, always under the coverage constraint. With the controlled transmission power, the users are redirected to connect to the lower traffic load cells. Consequentially, the balanced traffic load is obtained for the network

Abstact 1 - Over the past few years, mobile broadband technologies and speeds have greatly increased in the European Union, reaching an ever larger share of broadband consumers. These changes have implications for broadband market competition. In the past, mobile services offered slow but mobile internet whereas fixed services offered faster but fixed internet. Fixed and mobile broad-band were therefore obviously complementary services. While mobile broadband speeds have significantly increased over the latest years, fixed broadband is remaining rather a fixed technol-ogy. Consequently, if mobile broadband becomes fast enough considering some consumers’ needs, we believe that the same consumers will choose to use only the mobile broadband tech-nology (who by itself offers high-speed and mobility) instead of both fixed and mobile broad-band technologies. As a result, we may observe an increasing trend towards fixed to mobile substitution. Our study investigates empirically this trend. More specifically, it analyzes the im-pact of mobile broadband technology evolution - through 4G adoption - on fixed to mobile sub-stitution in the 28 European countries from 2009 until 2015. The few studies examining this sub-ject show that fixed to mobile substitution exists although none of these studies analyze the evo-lution of this substitution. The results confirm a significant existence of a fixed to mobile substi-tution in the EU, and show that this substitution is more than doubled when a country adopts 4G. The growing competitive pressure from mobile operators also provides fixed operators with incentives to acquire – or merge with – mobile operators. This fact should be a concern for policy makers as it could have harmful consequences for competition and investment on the broad-band market.
Abstract 2 - Whereas open science – i.e. publishing articles in scientific journals – had been largely studied on the academic side, there is still a need to explore the subject on the industry side. This study spe-cifically analyzes the role of academic institutions in firms’ scientific publications and uses a novel approach to explore the subject. Publications issued from collaborations with academic institutions are indeed differentiated from other publications. The first type of publications is considered as an indicator of firms’ collaborative activities with academic institutions whereas the second type of publications is considered as the result of firms’ strategies and/or firms’ capa-bilities to publish. This study provides evidence that industry publications are a valuable signal to attract academic partners. In addition, this study provides evidence that potential academic partners are more willing to team up with firms’ researchers who have proven their ability to achieve high-quality research/publications without the help of academic partners. Finally, the study provides evidence that past successful collaborations with academic partners lead the firm to reiterate such collaborations in the short term (2 years max.).
Abstract 3 - The objective of this study is twofold. First, it provides further knowledge on the subject of prof-itability of industry science/publications as it is not clear yet whether industry sci-ence/publications are profitable to firms. Second, it considers the central role of academic part-ners in the profitability of firms’ scientific publications as previous empirical studies do not con-sider such role. To investigate the subject, we perform several regressions with firms profits as dependent variable. The results provide evidence that the publication of scientific articles is not a profitable activity in itself (as it was demonstrated in two previous studies). Collaborations with academic institutions are the real basis of profitable results; the production of scientific publica-tions is only one of the consequences of these collaborations. This study also shows that not all collaborations are profitable, only collaborations in high-tech sectors that lead to high-quality publications lead to larger profits. Indeed, in their quest for survival and profitability, companies competing in high-tech sectors often need the help of academic partners to exploit scientific knowledge. On average, a rise of about 7% in successful collaborations (leading to high-quality publications) raises the profit of high-tech firms by about 1%. -
Abstract 4 - This chapter analyzes the factors influencing the quality of the output of I-A collaborations ap-proximated by the quality of the I-A co-publications. More specifically it analyzes two subjects that are typically complicated to study empirically because of a lack of available data: (1) it compares US and EU I-A partnerships and (2) it discusses if and how internet is a useful tool in I-A collaborations. The results empirically confirm that EU universities are less efficient partners than US universities when collaborating with the private sector. This study also demonstrates a much larger gap between EU and US academic partners in high-tech sectors. Finally, the results provide evidence that broadband is a useful tool for international I-A collaborations although broadband is less important in the success of I-A international collaborations in high-tech sectors compared to lower-tech sectors.

Annotation:
The mobile telecommunications industry continues to be at the epicentre for growth, innovation, and disruption for virtually all other industries. It is one of the keys to sustainable economic development especially in developing and emerging economies. Over the past two decades, the industry has been very dynamic, experiencing high growth rates. This paper uses econometric models to investigate the impact of market structure on market outcomes such as mobile prices and investment in emerging economies. This is done using quarterly panel data on fifteen emerging economies across four continents for the period between 2006 and 2015. The Herfindahl-Hirschman index (HHI) and the number of operators are used to proxy market structure and effective price per minute paid by consumers and capital expenditure per subscriber are used to proxy mobile prices and investment respectively. Empirical results indicate that increase in market concentration increases market prices. Results also indicate an inverted-U relationship between market concentration and investment. These results indicate that there is a trade-off between static and dynamic efficiency which means that competition in mobile telecommunications reduces both market prices and investments.

This dissertation proposes four empirical essays on bank stability, financial digitalisation, the informal economy, and natural disasters. These themes represent economic policy challenges. The first chapter looks at the impact of bank competition on credit risk in Sub-Saharan Africa. We show that increased competition is likely to both enhance and lessen the quality of banks’ loans portfolios. The second chapter investigates whether the rapid expansion of mobile financial services helps reduce the informal sector in emerging and developing countries. Our results indicate that such financial innovation can be considered as a powerful tool to formalize economies. The third chapter examines the effect of education on the informal economy in Africa. We underline the importance of a balanced educational system between general and vocational education to reduce the size of the informal sector. The last chapter focuses on the determinants of natural disasters. It highlights the role of weather, economic and structural factors, and climate change in the incidence of natural disasters

Annotation:
International roaming is a hot topic in the telecommunications industry. Many countries have witnessed a downward trend in mobile domestic prices. On the contrary, international roaming prices remained reluctant to follow the domestic trend. In Europe, the service has been regulated with price cap since 2007, and regulation is maintained for years to come. The existing literature on the economics of international roaming has focused on theoretical modelling, which assumes a uniform retail price (i.e. common across visited networks). The main finding is that wholesale and retail prices rise with the number of visited networks. Additionally, vertical merger is found unprofitable; and home network steering does not cause downward pressure on wholesale prices. We found that the assumption of uniform retail pricing leads to results that are inconsistent with wholesale competition because visited networks appear in the demand as complements rather than substitutes. We present theoretical models that match the existing literature’s findings, and compare results to the case whereby the retail price is discriminatory (i.e. differs by visited networks). With discriminatory retail, substitutability of networks reduces prices, and the incentive for vertical merger exists. In a steering game, steering is found able to reduce wholesale prices; and networks alliances are formed in equilibrium. The empirical literature on international roaming is limited to few industry studies. We use an aggregated dataset on prices and quantities for networks visited by roamers from one major mobile provider whose subscribers travel a lot across the world, Etisalat. The study period witnessed a retail price shift from discriminatory to uniform. The main findings are: (1) competition, as measured by the number of visited networks, reduces wholesale price; (2) traffic steering is effective, especially towards preferred networks (alliance and cross-owned); (3) only alliance networks offer wholesale discounts; and (4) demand is more elastic than crude industry studies.

Financial inclusion play a key role for a country's economic growth for poverty eradication and multiple studies have been made on how to achieve it. With a cellphone as the most accessible technology, it enables pervasively unbanked people to pay bills, save, withdraw and deposit money. In this study we aim to analyze if mobile money has an impact on economic growth in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) since it has expanded significantly and is used by nearly half a billion people in SSA. We divided SSA into four regions and used panel data to examine the impact over seven years (2012-2018). Mobile money is divided into three variables: active agents, active accounts, and total transactions in relationship to GDP per capita. Because of the difference in mobile money usage between the regions we divide all three components with the region's population. We conclude that total transactions have a small but positive and significant impact on economic growth while active accounts and active agents shows a positive but insignificant result. In our analysis we proceed to discuss different factors of mobile money that can contribute to a positive impact on economic growth such as remittances and interest-bearing accounts.

Mobile network operators are currently faced with a number of challenges at the market. The revenues from voice services have decreased the last couple of years. Mobile broadband access services are being adopted and the demand is increasing. The increasing traffic volumes require investments in order to increase the network capacity. This development leads to a large interest in network solutions that can offer high capacity and low cost. Besides the use of more efficient radio access technology mobile network operators use strategies for network deployment and operation involving other market actors. Operators share networks with competitors or outsource network deployment and operation to other companies, e.g. suppliers of network equipment. In these examples the mobile operators cooperate about the networks, the relations to end-users are the same as if the operator would operate the network on its own. However, in other areas other actors enter the market for mobile services where mobile operators traditionally have been the dominant player. Handset manufacturers and Internet companies offer value added services and applications to the end-users. They also establish relations with customers of the mobile operators. Hence, mobile operators look into new technical solutions and services in order to reduce costs and find new services and sources of revenues. Many of the networking solutions and services require that the operator cooperates with some other actor. In this PhD thesis cooperation strategies of mobile network operators are analyzed including cooperation with competitors, customers and different types of partners. The partner can be a provider of a non-telecom service like public transportation, financial institutes or third parties taking intermediary roles. The main research questions in the thesis revolves around why and how mobile operators cooperate. The drivers for cooperation and the way the cooperation is organized is analyzed for a number of cases. Three types of services and markets are analyzed: - Public mobile broadband access services - Services and solutions for indoor wireless access - Mobile payment, ticketing and contactless services A number of technical solutions, business concepts and different types of cooperation and business scenarios have been investigated. Two overall research questions that are applicable for all cases of cooperation are identified for the analysis. - What are the main drivers for a specific type of cooperation? - In what ways can the actors organize the cooperation?

Followed by the mobile technology development and high rate of mobile internet usage worldwide, mobile banking has become prominent technological innovation in the banking sector giving a competitive edge over traditional banking. Smartphones and mobile technologies are becoming increasingly available and affordable in North Macedonia in recent years, and many banks are providing banking services to customers via smartphones. The adoption of mobile banking in the country has not reached its full potential yet and has been at its early stage of adoption. However, not many studies investigate determinants of mobile banking adoption which may help banks to design more suitable mobile services for customers and increase the m-banking adoption in the country. This study is the first attempt to fill this gap by examining determinants that affect consumer intention to use mobile banking services in the country, as developing country. To get insights regarding the user adoption of m-banking services in the country, a survey was conducted among more than 150 mobile users. This study proposes a mobile banking user adoption research model based on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), and beside basic constructs (perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness and behavioral intention to use) it integrates social image, trust and risk that are specific for mbanking. The results of the empirical study are supporting the proposed basic constructs of the model and some specific relationships are unveiled. This research is a holistic approach representing a solid base for future studies on the adoption of new technologies in the country. Its originality and practical implications are reflected in determining the significance of additional constructs that are specific for m-banking. From practitioner’s viewpoint, this research offers valuable insights for developing m-banking solutions.

With the rapid advancement of mobile technology and the increasing popularity of smartphones, mobile applications have become an integral part of modern life. The success of a mobile application is no longer solely dependent on its features and functionalities; instead, usability has emerged as a critical quality dimension that significantly impacts user satisfaction and adoption rates. Multiple domains have gained benefits from the usage of mobile applications such as education, logistics, transportation, and security sector. Apart from these domains higher educational institutes such as universities use mobile applications for educational purposes. The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (FHSS) at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura (USJ), Sri Lanka has implemented a performance evaluation system for students, alongside the introduction of a mobile application aimed at enhancing mobility, efficiency, and user engagement through effective interfaces. However, during usability testing, the mobile application exhibited significant usability issues, including readability challenges, a lack of trending gamification features, and an absence of notification pop-ups. This concept paper examines the issues of existing mobile applications and demonstrates the significance of the design thinking process in the redesign of the mobile application for the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura. By employing user-centric methodologies, involving users, and integrating trending features, the mobile application's usability was substantially improved. The concept paper provides valuable insights and practical guidelines for educational institutions seeking to leverage design thinking to enhance their mobile application's usability, user engagement, and overall effectiveness.

The purpose of this research is to analyse penetration and use of mobile payments in Baltic countries and Poland in point of sale (POS) segment. Mobile payment or m-payment (MP) is referred to the transfer of money (in digital form) from one party (e.g., consumer) to another party (e.g., seller or merchant) using a mobile device. Mobile payments allows to pay for goods or services with mobile devices instead of paying with cash or physical credit cards. The statistical data helps us to know information about mobile payments growth. The article concerns analysis of mobile payment use in POS systems. The penetration of mobile payments in countries is different. Lack of scientific information and novelty of this article provided by this research include methods for multi criteria decision support by applying SAW and TOPSIS methods. In this study case we demonstrate the evaluation of mobile payment use in Lithuania with comparison with other Baltic countries and Poland. The SAW and TOPSIS methods supply the structure of decision making which can help us to evaluate the penetration of mobile payments.

The emergence of mobile technology provides people alternatives not only in interpersonal communication and Internet access, but also in learning and teaching. The fast growth of new generation of mobile devices as well as the frequent use of wireless technology has capitalized the great potential of mobile learning in becoming an effective tool for education. Mobile learning technologies offer teachers and students a more flexible approach to learning. Mobile devices have greater functionality, giving teachers the opportunity to provide contextualized and personalized learning resources, unrestricted by spatial and temporal constraints and allowing learners to use readily-available, handheld computing devices and communication technology to access information from anywhere and at anytime. In this context, the purpose of this paper is twofold. The first goal is to analyze various theoretical approaches of the m-learning and, secondly, this paper aims to present the findings of a research among undergraduate and graduated students from The Bucharest University of Economic Studies. The objectives of the survey were to explore the ways students are already using mobile technologies to support their learning and to identify students' readiness and also willingness towards the use of mobile devices in learning situations. Our research shows that students are ready to adopt mobile learning due to their higher ownership of mobile devices and greater familiarity with the use of technology in learning contexts. Considering the research findings, our paper will also present different ways to incorporate mobile technologies into educational processes to foster collaboration and social interaction and for enhancing their potential for both formal and informal learning.

The aim of the research was to identify the current preferences of active sports students at Charles University within online shopping in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. The research sample consisted of students from 5 faculties of Charles University. The method of electronic survey was used to obtain data. The results show changes in purchase behaviour and increased digital adoption, impulse buying and use of mobile marketing. Specifically, the results show that there has been an increase in online shopping and an increase in the use of cashless payments. In addition there was a tendency to save more on spending. A reduced frequency of individual purchases and a focus on smaller volume purchases were evident. At the same time, the majority of respondents showed a more sensitive relationship in relation to the price of goods. There was a consensus among respondents in their perception of the benefits of using the online shopping format as a whole, and the key factors that determine the decision to buy from a particular e-shop in price sensitivity and the emphasis placed on reviews by other customers. Preferred categories of purchased goods included clothing and footwear, purchases in the service sector, restaurant meals, cultural events, food delivery and sports equipment. The average purchase amount spent corresponded to 41% of their income. Respondents browsing the range and possibly buying online preferred websites over mobile apps, while the increase in modern forms of payment was confirmed.

Contextual mobile advertising, which has the advantages of strong interactivity and immersive experience, will be the development direction of Internet advertising in the future. Although past research has explored the effects of contextual mobile advertising, little research has studied the effect on consumers’ behavior from the perspective of contextual advertising traits. Thus, this study combined the Scene Theory and the Theory of Planned Behavior to construct the model of advertising effectiveness mechanism. By analyzing survey data from a representative sample of 340 mobile consumers, the validity of the model was proved. The results showed that contextual stimulation, contextual interaction, and content accuracy, as contextual factors in mobile advertising, can positively influence consumers’ attitudes toward mobile advertising, which in turn stimulate purchasing intention. The theoretical and practical implications of these findings were also discussed.

Digital financial inclusion is important to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Digital financial tools, such as mobile money, can, in principle, be used by anyone with a cell phone. Mobile money and services surrounding mobile money can help reduce poverty by helping increase remittances from labour migrants, helping households to weather negative shocks to income, and encouraging investments such as in farms or in self-employment activities. An extension of this logic is that, in refugee hosting areas, digital financial inclusion through mobile money can potentially play a role in improving the economic inclusion of refugees. This evidence brief shares findings from a project developing a mobile money system in the Somali region of Ethiopia and discusses ways that policies can help catalyse the use of mobile money in such regions.

Annotation:
In recent years, more and more governments in lower income countries have been introducing taxes on mobile money transfers as a means to raise revenue. These are often explicitly promoted as a way of taxing informal economic activity, but critics point out their potential negative impact on lower-income groups. Ghana’s electronic transfer levy (E-levy), introduced in May 2022, is a particularly interesting case study. It was explicitly justified as a way of taxing Ghana’s informal economy but includes a 100 cedi ($8.80) per day threshold to limit the tax burden on lower-income groups. Using data from a new survey of 2,700 self-employed informal workers in the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) collected in April and May 2022, we examine the likely impact of the E-levy on informal workers from an equity standpoint (with reference to earnings, gender and occupational sector), and explore how this relates to how the levy is perceived.

Digital financial services like mobile money are increasingly prevalent in developing countries as an alternative to traditional financial services. For many governments, they have become critical components of domestic revenue mobilisation, tax administration modernisation, and broader tax reform. However, making tax administration more efficient and maximising voluntary compliance is a very difficult task. The existing literature on the relationship between mobile money and tax performance in developing countries is limited, although it does show the potential of mobile money to improve tax performance. This paper aims to fill the gap by investigating the relationship between mobile money and the quality of tax policy and administration in developing economies and highlighting some mechanisms underlying these findings, including a lower tax compliance burden, a smaller informal sector, and lower corruption.

As the globalization of the world economy proceeds apace, Colombia must cope with an increasingly competitive international economic environment. The need to compete for highly mobile international capital is an essential component of the fiscal landscape in all countries in today's global economy, especially those which, like Colombia, depend on foreign direct investment (FDI). This paper focuses on the effects of the tax system in Colombia on FDI. However, tax policy is far from the only factor affecting the foreign direct investment decisions of multinational corporations. Accordingly, before proceeding to a detailed analysis of tax structure and FDI, several of these alternative factors will be discussed.
