In the light of Pope Francis’s encyclical on ecology, Laudato si’, this article points to the ecumenical significance of an ecological conversion as integral to the Christian vocation and the promotion of an authentic catholicity. Etymologically speaking, a ‘religious’ commitment intrinsically brings together spiritual and ecological concerns, and inspires new choices in our moral conduct. In ecumenical terms, among the many possible topics, those of creation, Trinity and Eucharist suggest broad and deep dimensions of ecological vision and commitment for the churches that can continue to grow.

Abstract Q factor analysis and cluster analysis data demonstrate a high level of homogeneity among USDA Forest Service district rangers resembling that found by Kaufman in the 1950s, suggesting a current organizational culture committed primarily to one constituency group rather than the multiple constituencies implied by the Multiple Use-Sustained Yield Act. Such strong commitment to a single-constituency perspective may preclude agency sensitivity to other public perspectives obtained through citizen participation. Awe is a self-transcendent emotion that can diminish one’s focus on the self and serves as an important motivator of commitment to social collectives. However, the influence of awe on ecological behavior is not clear. This study examines the relationships between people’s feeling of awe, their connectedness to nature, and ecological behavior. Three experiments tested the effect of awe on ecological behaviors including mediation tests. Compared with participants in the control condition, participants in the awe condition were more inclined to behave ecologically (Study 1 and 2) and reported a higher feeling of connectedness to nature (Study 2). Moreover, the relationship between awe and ecological behavior was mediated by connectedness to nature (Study 3). These findings indicate that awe helps broaden the self-concept by including nature and increase connectedness to nature, which in turn lead to ecological behavior. They also highlight the significance of connectedness in explaining why awe increases ecological behavior.

Since 2003, several Moroccan industries, mainly in reaction to the development of environmental legislation, have made technical and managerial environmental commitments aimed at preserving their survival and sustainability. The objective of this research is to identify the ecological behaviours of the leaders of Moroccan industries and to explore the instruments put in place to mitigate their environmental impact in a global context of popularizing sustainable development. On a sample of 20 companies, the results show that it is mainly the managers of large companies that adopt citizen behaviours characterized by a high technical and managerial commitment. This research also reveals that the majority of companies adopt curative technologies and that financial difficulties are the main barrier to the adoption of environmental technologies.

Oil and gas firms in Nigeria are generally perceived to be weak in their environmental and ecological initiatives towards their host communities. Yet there has been a dearth of empirical emphasis from research that shows evidences about the role of ecological protection on the corporate image of oil and gas firms. Therefore, this study focused on examining the influence of a commitment to ecological protection on the corporate image of oil and gas firms in Nigeria. The study adopted the mixed methods approach where quantitative and qualitative methods (survey and interview) were used. For the quantitative research, copies of structured questionnaire were distributed to 350 employees of the selected firms, while 30 respondents from other stakeholder groups were interviewed for the qualitative research. Based on the results of the regression and thematic analyses, findings show that the firms’ commitment to ecological protection through their policy to avoid the use of materials from the illegal exploitation of natural resources, commitment to waste minimisation and recycling and pollution leads to increased investors’ confidence, strengthened relationship with the government, host community and reduced pressure from third parties. Therefore, it is recommended that oil and gas firms intensify efforts in activities that ensure ecological protection of host communities and thus build stakeholders confidence in the firms’ corporate image.

In 2010, the Musée Océanographique de Monaco initiated a contemporary art programme to mark its centenary and reaffirm its commitment to its founding premise of displaying objects of both art and science. Ever since, the museum has regularly staged exhibitions promoting marine wildlife protection. I argue that as well as examining ecological concerns, these exhibitions have functioned in ecological ways, adopting curatorial approaches that traverse art and science to highlight interconnections between humans and ocean life. By revisiting historical modes of display, such as the Wunderkammer, and deploying anthropomorphism, the museum presents ecologies of display that aim to evoke solidarity with marine wildlife. Yet, ambiguity arises when considering these exhibitions in the context of this institution and its longer history, which I suggest requires an ongoing curatorial commitment to finding creative and thoughtful ways of responding to ecological issues in museums.

Sustainability includes social, economic, and ecological responsibilities. The worldwide concern about sustainability is increasing, especially for those issues related to the ecological domain. Any organization wishing to survive and sustain its business should consider sustainability pillars within daily activities. Therefore, this study is directed to investigate how consumers’ identification, involvement, and commitment to sustainability affect entrepreneurship. This paper uses a quantitative cross-sectional method to collect the data from 400 respondents in Jordan. The results show a correlation between consumers’ level of involvement, identification, commitment, and sustainability components (economy-driven venture, society-driven venture, and ecology-driven venture). Moreover, commitment has the highest effect on customers’ intentions and behavior; identification has the second highest effect, while involvement does not significantly affect both customers’ intentions and behavior. The study recommends that all organizations, whatever they do and wherever they conduct their business, should consider sustainability pillars within their strategies and daily practices. The sustainability-driven ventures should not only attract the required customer segmentation via social media, but also enhance, strengthen, and engage their sense of identification, commitment, and belonging.

This research study took place at the High Performance Centre (hpc) at the University of Pretoria (UP) in South Africa (SA). The sport psychologists/sports counselors at the hpc mainly deliver performance development services to the athletes. The sport psychology services at the hpc are conducted to the athletes via the Psychological Skills Training (PST) approach and Mindfulness-Acceptance-Commitment (MAC) approach. These two approaches are individualistic in nature and the aim of my study was to move away from a more traditional individualistic perspective to an ecological perspective that takes into consideration other role players such as sport scientists. This was achieved by developing a sport science specific MAC programme for the sport scientists, which was facilitated through experiential learning. The goal of the MAC programme was to explore the sport scientists’ experiences with reference to what they discovered and how they applied their learning. Eight in depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted with four sport scientists at the hpc after their participation in the programme. Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) was used to analyse the semi-structured interviews. The findings were mainly related to difficulties and advantages that the sport scientists experienced when they applied the MAC principles.

In recent years, much has been discussed about global climate changes (GCCs), popularly known as global warming. The scientific evidences point out to the influence of human actions for its drastic intensification. Therefore, studies of the psychological aspects involved become relevant. This study aimed at the investigation of the views of adolescents concerning GCCs, and the possible relations between those views and their pro-ecological commitment. Such commitment is measured by willingness for engagement in pro-environmental behaviors; environmentalism attitudes, like ecocentric and anthropocentric; consideration of future consequences; and ecological worldviews. Participants were 348 adolescents who answered a questionnaire containing questions about socio-demographic data, open questions about the practice of environmental care, and about GCCs, and the scales of Ecocentric and Anthropocentric Environmentalism, the Consideration of Future Consequences and the Ecological Worldviews assessment scale. From the inter-relationships between variables, procedures carried out by means of descriptive and correlacional statistics, it was observed that 55% of teenagers said that they did not engage in actions of environmental care, which was associated with apathyanthropocentric, immediatism, and individualism. The consideration of future consequences joined the practice of environmental care, corroborating evidence from the literature. It was evident that views concerning GCCs were superficial; adolescents perceive it as a generic environmental problem, and are confused with other problems such as pollution. This study found no association between views about GCCs and the indicators of pro-ecological commitment, perhaps due to the conceptual confusion about the subject. However, the lack of environmental care actions and other indicators of non-commitment (apathy-anthropocentric, individualism and immediatism) were associated with conceptually poor or incomplete responses (with no indication of cause, consequence or responsibility for the problem), demonstrating diminished knowledge and the failure to consider these issues

Using a qualitative analysis of the Youth For Climate movement based on a corpus of semi-structured interviews and online observation, this work examines the contemporary experience of youthful ecological commitment. The prism of reputation was chosen, particularly in social networks, which are very important in the daily lives of these young people. At a time when the injunctions to make oneself (in)visible in order to exist are powerful, these young activists have to work on their reputation in terms of what they can and must expose about their commitment. Their knowledge of social networks enables them to develop different strategies, between revealing and concealing their ecological principles and committed practices. To do this, they have a range of heterogeneous spaces at their disposal, which means they have to work on and adapt their reputations. In the course of their experience with Youth For Climate, these phases of reputational work can give rise to tensions and dilemmas between different logics of action. Combining effectiveness for the movement, a good individual reputation, integration into the collective and coherence between ecological values and practices is not easy. For some young people, displaying their commitment can be risky in terms of their reputation, while for others, exposing it is a way of asserting themselves as autonomous individuals, of positioning themselves in the face of these tensions, or of assuming a virtuous ethic. The variety of these reflections on their commitment and reputation is often the sign of a complex and heterogeneous youth in search of autonomy. Identity issues are at the heart of these committed practices, enabling the young people studied to provide ontological responses to hypermodern questions and injunctions

The pro-ecological commitment (CPE) constitutes an important topic within Person- Environment Studies, here seen as a predisposition to practices that result in environmental protection. Under the framework of sustainability, the concept of sustainable behavior emerges, covering, in addition to CPE, new psychological dimensions such as: the future time perspective (PTF) and the ecological worldviews (VEM). The current study intended to explore the concept of sustainable behavior of university students, by means of the association among some of its dimensions: CPE, PTF and VEM. For this purpose, 380 undergraduate students of biology, ecology, nursing, geography, and social service answered a form containing: socio-demographic questionnaire, a question on self-assessment of environmental care, the Scale of Ecocentric and Anthropocentric Environmentalisms, the Scale Consideration of Future Consequences, and the Scale Ecological Worldviews. Based on descriptive and correlational procedures, it was found that 78% of the participants practice or have practiced environmental care (caregivers) and the spread of information has been the practice more frequently reported, and the source of influence for such practices were the school, social networks, and the contact with nature It was also observed the association between practice of environmental care and ecocentric environmentalism, consideration of future consequences and egalitarian worldview (worldview of fragile nature). The lack of environmental care was associated with anthropocentric environmentalism, apathy, and individualistic worldview (worldview of passivity). As expected, and suggested by the literature, positive association were found between the sustainable behavior dimensions investigated in this study and the practice of environmental care

Parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) face many challenges which lead to low levels of psychological well-being, partly caused by inability to parent in accordance with one’s values. Child-directed play, a moment of being fully attentive and responsive to one’s child, has the potential to increase parental values. A non-concurrent multiple-baseline experimental design investigated whether daily exercises of child-directed play improved valued parenting and parental perspective-taking. Eight parents of children with diagnosed or suspected ASD were followed daily for six weeks. The intervention comprehended daily practice of child-directed play and video supervision. Child-directed play increased ratings of parental values for all but one participant (Hedges’ g* = 1.67) with effect maintained at follow-up, and increased ratings of parental perspective-taking. A gradual effect indicates the need for greater difference in baseline length between participants. No effects on children, nor on parental well-being were investigated in the present study.

The Sport Commitment model (SCM) is a well-known theoretical framework to illustrate how the psychological state of commitment to sport has been influenced and studied in able-bodied persons. Considering the characteristics and lived experiences of people with disabilities, additional antecedents of sport commitment were added in the structure of the SCM. In order to extend the application of this revised SCM to persons with disabilities, the concept of three levels (personal, social, and environmental) of Bronfenbrenner’s ecological model was employed to differentiate the impacts of nine antecedents to sport commitment. The primary purpose of this study was to examine the revised SCM in terms of the magnitude of contribution of nine antecedents (enjoyment, personal investment, involvement opportunities, social constraints, involvement alternatives, self-efficacy, negative consequence of sport participation, social support, and accessibility of sport facilities and settings) on sport commitment to athletes with disabilities. The second purpose of this study was to investigate the superiority between original and alternative sport commitment models (mediation and direct/indirect model). A total of 157 adult athletes (Mean age= 34.87, SD = 11.78) with physical disabilities from team and individual sports across the United States, Europe, and Asia completed an online survey of 60 items across the nine antecedents hypothesized to influence sport commitment in athlete with disabilities. Results indicated involvement opportunities, followed by personal investment, were the strongest predictors of sport commitment (R2 = 65). In contrast, enjoyment, social constraints, involvement alternatives, self-efficacy, negative consequence of sport participation, social support, and accessibility of sport facilities and settings had no significant prediction on sport commitment. Chi-square difference test showed the direct/indirect model (χ2 (211) = 318.41; RMSEA = .05; CFI = .97; SRMR = .06) had better goodness-of-fit indices than the mediation model (χ2 (215) = 390.55; RMSEA = .06; CFI = .95; SRMR = .11). Based on the principle of parsimony, the original model (χ2 (215) = 384.95; RMSEA = .07; CFI = .95; SRMR = .06) was deemed a better model to understand the mechanism of sport commitment than the direct/indirect model. The SCM was an effective theoretical framework for adult athletes with disabilities. However, it still requires more studies to understand its effectiveness to other developmental ages and stages of athletes with disabilities.

As such, the integration of environmental sustainability into the hotels' business strategy is an increasingly common approach. However, there are challenges for companies in this sector to claim their environmental commitment by improving the transparency and credibility of such commitments, to obtain a greater degree of trust in consumers. In this sense, this dissertation focuses on evaluating the ecological attributes that a hotel must understand to create trust in its clients. To respond to this objective, concepts considered important within the environmental sustainability in hospitality were identified and characterized and a questionnaire was conducted to Portuguese consumers. The results show the importance that the fifteen attributes of environmental sustainability selected have for consumers to develop trust in the services of hotels and the relevance these must have in advertising in this industry.

Aí reside a autêntica conversão ecológica.
This dissertation aims to approach one of the most relevant social and religious themes today: the sustainability of what is common - the land, the resources, and the environment. As a result of irresponsible practices of human beings, the deterioration of the ecosystems has worsened in recent years. At the same time, the individual seems to despise the harmful consequences of their unruly behaviour against the planet. Creation has suffered a rampant exploitation due to scientific and technological progress, and the subject does not have time to consider the effects nor control the sequence of events. Self-sufficency is the great engine of this vicious circle. Thus, over the three chapters of this essay we intend to awaken a better ecological conscience. For this, we seek to understand the origin of such human imprecision; at the same time we reflect about the main interventions of the teachings of the Church on the matter. We try to enhance the promotion of the sustainability of the creation and the dignity of creatures. Finding the common good is to respect the dynamics of each being, taking them as a constituent part of the ecosystem, and not making them our property. Therein lies the true ecological conversion.

This chapter attempts to broaden our understanding of the relatively under-investigated connection between civic republican and green perspectives. The chapter outlines key similarities between civic republicanism and more radical forms of environmentalism and highlights how both republicanism and environmentalism face an internal tension between communitarian values and a strong commitment to meaningful participatory politics. The author argues that greater engagement with republicanism by environmental political theory can promote a better grasp of environmentalism’s political implications and internal tensions. Moreover, engagement with republicanism can also yield insight into how we might address ecological threats, including climate change. Republican conceptions of dispersed sovereignty, civic virtue, and even the proper use of nature can help guide a more ecologically sustainable society.

The book presents a novel strategy for addressing the major environmental and social problems of our time. It emphasizes transformative actions by individual citizens, both ordinary and extraordinary, rather than by government and other groups. It empowers a spectrum of solutions appropriate to people with varying interests, skills, political persuasions, and level of environmental and social commitment. The book draws on social and ecological theory to formulate a four-tiered stewardship strategy to transform communities, nations, and the planet. Key elements of this strategy are (1) individual actions that link people with nature and reduce human impacts on the planet, (2) effective communication to reduce political polarization and share solutions, (3) collaborations that integrate actions of multiple groups, and (4) political engagement to trigger needed transformations. The book builds on diverse visions and goals for the future of ecosystems and society: concern for future generations, a spiritual commitment to care for Creation and vulnerable people, a desire to sustain the best of nature and of cultures, and a concern about the security and well-being of communities, nations, and the world. This is not a book about what should be done. It is a book about what has been and can be done and a pragmatic strategy for tangible progress.

Christina Rossetti: Poetry, Ecology, Faith suggests that the life and works of Christina Rossetti offer a commentary on the relationship between Christianity and ecology. It counters readings of her as a withdrawn or apolitical poet by reading her Anglo-Catholic faith in the context of her commitment to the nonhuman. Rossetti considered the doctrines and ideas associated with the Catholic Revival to be revelatory of an ecology of creation in which all things, material and immaterial, human and nonhuman, divine and embodied, are interconnected. The book focuses on her close attention to the Bible, the Church Fathers, and Francis of Assisi to show how her poetry, prose, and letters refused the nineteenth-century commodification of creation and declared it as a new and shared reality kept in eternal flux by the nondual love of the Trinity. In chapters on her early involvement in the Oxford Movement, her relationship to the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, Franciscan commitment to the diversity of plant and animal life through her anti-vivisection activism, and green reading of the apocalypse as transformative rather than destructive, the book traces an ecological love command in her writing, one she considered it a Christian duty to fulfil. It illuminates Rossetti’s at once sensitive and keenly ethical readings of the place of flora and fauna, stars and planets, humans and angels in creation, and is also the first study of its kind to argue for the centrality of spiritual materialism in her work, one driven by a prevenient and green grace.

The polis, the philosophical concept according to which there is one complete human form, is to blame for political and ecological crises. The polis as a philosophical tradition shares the current complex shape of climate change. A certain perfect body figures the denial of matter of the polis. The book presents a philosophy of elemental difference, an affirmation of the singularities of location, movement, living, aging, dying, valuing, in which humans partake. Elemental difference in the polis can be appreciated in the fact that empirical bodily nonidentity can be called upon to elevate one group of bodies among the rest. Empirical bodily nonidentity is a feature of the original articulation of the polis as a philosophical concept in the work of Aristotle. Sylvia Wynter has argued that the very idea of empirical bodily nonidentity begins with the modern science of racial anatomy. She calls this biocentrism. This book argues that biocentrism is a feature of the polis, according to which the one complete body was defined by its capacity for disembodied thought. The sciences of racial anatomy are a more explicit commitment to biocentrism, but the ranking of matter with respect to one complete human, a body that is the site of supra-natural thinking, is a practice that has always characterized the polis. In this way, the polis is responsible for both political and ecological hierarchy. It is as responsible for what is euphemistically called climate change as it is for the political hierarchy that constitutes it.

Abstract Through its goal of ‘Zero Hunger’, the SDG 2 is committed to end hunger and malnutrition for all by 2030. India is a signatory to this commitment, and all the earlier international declarations on eradication of hunger and poverty. Yet, India is home to the world’s largest food insecure population and is rated as a country with ‘serious’ hunger levels Not even a single state in India is, in the ‘low hunger’ or ‘moderate hunger’ categories. The food abundant state of Punjab, which has been largely responsible for India’s self-sufficiency in food grains production also lies in the ‘serious’ category. Punjab not only makes an ideal case study for exploring the paradoxical issue of ‘Hunger amidst Plenty’, but also ideally represents the Indian economy. Being a primarily rural and agrarian economy, Punjab exhibits an exclusive and unsustainable growth process that has failed to trickle down and generate livelihood security to its masses leading to an agrarian and ecological crisis marked by soaring farmer’s indebtedness and suicides. By exploring the multidimensionality of the concept of food security, in Punjab, this book brings to fore a multiplicity of issues that affect food security, including education, health, employment, gender and caste-based discrimination, and environmental conditions such as health care, availability of safe drinking water and sanitation as well as nutrition practices and knowledge that promote absorption and improve health status.

The conceptualization of the notions of sustainable habitat, integrative design and complexity raises the need to address the questions, how to contribute to the habitat sustainable from transdisciplinary processes? What is the responsibility of design in the current context? Moreover, how to face the complexity of thinking and responding to the urban, architectural and technological phenomena? These approximations are built from three perspectives: cultural and comprehensive management of the territory; technology, environment and sustainability; and integrative design, habitat and project. For this, it begins with a reflection on the meaning of design in relation to way, and how this is understood as a meta-discipline that integrates the voice of experts with that of people who live, enjoy or suffer from design objects. Subsequently, the relation between the notions of integrative design, habitat and complexity, in light of transdisciplinarityFrom this framework, it deepens the link among governance, resilience and urban reconversion, in times of neoliberal and hypercompetitive globalization, based on ecological ethics, civic participation and co- responsibility. On another scale, the connection among technology, environment and sustainability, from a vision of the future based on the use of energy; resource consumption; waste recycling, among others. As closure, addresses the matter of project research from an epistemological reflection that compromises the relationship between processes, maps and territories, to establish strategic notes for research-creation. As a conclusion, the commitment to reflection and the exercise of a responsible and integrative design.

Contrary to Catholicism, Catholic social teaching, and the commitment to live out the mercy of Jesus Christ, today’s dominant global economic and cultural system, neoliberalism, demands that life be led as a series of sacrifices to the market. This book’s theological critique of neoliberalism begins with recent papal teaching against “economism,” proceeds into a historical and theoretical analysis of neoliberalism’s conception as a discourse in academia and the business community, its rise to global prominence through class warfare, its subtle redefining of human self-understanding via the notion of “human capital,” and its formation of an ethos of mercilessness. Central is treatment of four neoliberal-perpetuated and -exacerbated crises: environmental destruction, slum proliferation, mass incarceration, and mass deportation. This entails plumbing the sacrificial and racist depths of neoliberalism. The book offers an antineoliberal systematic theology founded on Trinitarian mercy, a neighbor anthropology and innkeeper ecclesiology, and a politics of mercy, or a civilizational program grounded in, yet reimagining, the traditional Catholic works of mercy. This coheres with a “playbook” for social transformation that uses the universal destination of goods and abolitionism to direct the corporal works of mercy against the neoliberal utopianism that brought enhanced ecological devastation, slum growth, mass imprisonment, and abuse of migrants. In concert with official Catholic teaching, the Gospel injunction to “be merciful,” and hopeful visions of various people of good will, Send Lazarus urges a robust antineoliberal and antiracist politics, which amounts to a joyous expression of Christic hope for abundant life.

AbstractAlthough classified by many as a sub-field of economics, ecological economics was originally conceived of, in the late 1980s, as a transdiscipline, employing a range of expertise, in collaboration with social actors, to address a common matter of concern: how to halt, and reverse, the rampant destruction of the biological substrate of life on earth, which is being caused by modern industrialization? From humble beginnings, ecological economics today enjoys increasing recognition as a key academic discourse addressing the combined challenges of social and ecological instability that characterize the global assemblages of twenty-first century human society. At least in part, this can be seen as a result of circumstance having demonstrated the foresight of early contributors to the discourse, among them, Nicholas Georgescu-Roegen. Both his censure, from the early 1970s until his death in the mid-90s, and the recent renaissance of interest in his work help illustrate something exceptional about The Barcelona School of ecological economics and political ecology: the costs and benefits of a persistent commitment to understanding the human condition as an embedded part of the complex living-systems dynamics of planet earth. Central to this posture are two elements common to the work of both Georgescu-Roegen and Joan Martínez-Alier, long one of his staunchest advocates, and to the Barcelona School of ecological economics and political ecology: i. systematic and structured attention to the historicity of contemporary socio-ecological situations and ii. formal attention to constructing what Foucault, in responding to Kant, once called “a critical ontology of ourselves.” The former reflects a critique of the disregard for life, human and non-human, that has accompanied the rise of the Anthropocene; the latter a response to the epistemological and methodological implications of the integral role played by the hegemonic globalized academia in producing and perpetuating that disregard for life.

AbstractThe introductory chapter ‘Staying proximate’ welcomes the reader to stay with more-than-human relations in present times of ecological crisis, known as the age of the Anthropocene. The chapter joins feminist, postcolonial, and Indigenous environmental scholars’ call for more nuanced alternatives to the Anthropocenic imaginary, ones that attend to the multiplicity, difference, and uneven distribution of more-than-human responsibilities, vulnerabilities, and sufferings in the world. We seek alternatives to the distancing, generalising, and even apocalyptic imaginaries of the Anthropocene by engaging with mundane beings, relations, and places in the north. By gathering around uncomfortable concerns, we develop modes of proximity as affirmative entry points underlining the commitment to stay with the trouble in caring, sensitive, and thoughtful ways. We suggest openness, affinity, engagement, irritation, middleness, and scopic modes of attuning to and engaging with more-than-human worlds. It is these modes of attuning to our proximate relations that provide a radical standpoint of proximity that intensifies, enriches, and complicates our research inquiries in such times of all-encompassing ecological turmoil.

AbstractThis chapter presents a case study of Global Citizenship Experience Lab School in Chicago, USA—a secondary school dedicated to integrating curriculum, assessment, and pedagogy to promote real-world experiential learning. The chapter analyzes the school’s use of scaffolding to introduce students and teachers to a project-based learning model and examines the school’s commitment to global citizenship as an entry point for a whole-school approach to sustainability. Theoretical contributions to the field of education for sustainable development recommend integrated, whole-school approaches to sustainability. However, schools transitioning to such a holistic model face many challenges due to the wider systems in which they are embedded. This case study exemplifies how approaching school redesign as a process of simultaneously rethinking curriculum, assessment, and pedagogy may instill a more relational way of thinking, which is essential if we are to transcend and transform the social and ecological crises of today.

AbstractIn recent years the ecological impact of Tourism has been more and more considered, raising the issue of how to ensure higher levels of sustainability. Especially when it comes to flights, the issue of energy consumption and of exploring strategies to reduce the CO2 footprint of civil aviation has attracted a special attention, in particular while taking into account the so-called attitude-behavior gap, which describes major discrepancies between what people say about their commitment to sustainability and what they actually do when taking decisions. A possible strategy to address such issues is leveraging on “nudges” while persons are exploring available flights on an online travel agency’s platform (OTA), ensuring that they are adequately informed and offered good – more sustainable – alternatives. Based on the current literature and on the analyzed cases, this study presents a first map of twelve possible types of nudges, organized in four main categories: CO2 emissions, transportation mode, CO2 compensation, and sustainability efforts. Moreover, it shows their actual, quite limited, presence on ten major OTAs.

AbstractThis case study shares the results and lessons learned from agroforestry practices to restore a degraded and abandoned landscape, the production of seedlings of native and endemic tree species for forest restoration, and a trial of autochthones species transplantation at the village level in Madagascar. Awareness-raising and facilitation carried out by the NGO team on landscape changes and their effects on local people’s lives, food and natural resources, were the initial drivers of this process. A farmer led the landscape restoration experimentation by taking part of his poor, degraded land that had been long abandoned, and giving the green light to use it as a ‘farmer field school’. The community decided to keep the other side of the field untouched to enable comparison. Community members learned from each other by periodically sharing experiences. Community capacity-building on family accounting, production and harvest management helped community members to make decisions regarding the choice of crops and landscaping types suited to their needs. The community started to see results from the third year and increased the landscaped areas to boost future production. Some native trees like Harina (Bridelia tuleasneana), a highly preferred tree usually harvested from the rainforest for building materials, adapted very well to the village. The villagers learned to plant them rather than harvest them from the natural forest. The commitment, patience and courage of the community, and their immense pride in what they have achieved, created a cascading effect leading to sustainability.

AbstractIn this chapter, we look at individuals’ sharing practices and focus on their experiences concerning food waste and thrifting online via social platforms. We discuss their orientations, desires, and motivations for participating in the circular economy, and in doing so, we explain how consumption choices and lifestyles are powered by consumer commitment to ecological thinking, awareness, and responsibility. We identify what these practices are, explain what fuels them, and discuss how these will be meaningful for the future. This chapter comprises two sections: We first look at sustainable consumption practices today, situating this within the context of three case studies. We cover the interplay between technology and the value of goods, particularly during the pandemic; for example, by looking at the transformation of food ‘waste’, (what should in principle end up in the dumpster, enabling the practice of dumpster diving) and its commodification and exchange in the Too Good To Go market. We also offer some discussion on the qualitative methods employed in collecting the data. Finally, we conclude this chapter with a discussion on the implications of our study findings for future sustainable practices and policies in the digital marketplace of tomorrow’s consumers.

Compared to the evolutionary psychology of mating, the evolutionary demography of unions is little developed. We know quite a bit about why and how people have sex, much less about why and how they have spouses. Yet couples continue to be a central building block of families, the biosocial tie within which most adults live, most sex takes place, and through which most children are made and raised. Arguably, sexual selection in humans happens through long-term pair bonds rather than short-term relationships. Evolutionary theory approaches unions as reproductive contracts: a precarious balance of conflict and compromise between individual reproductive and sexual strategies. Sexual strategies are predicted to vary especially with age, gender and resources, but also with ecological and social conditions such as increasing gender equality and lower fertility. This chapter discusses the formation of unions in high-income, increasingly gender equal societies from the intersection of family demography and evolutionary studies. How is selection of spouses affected by having more highly educated women in the population? Why does contemporary family formation often involve a stage of cohabitation before marriage? I argue that sexual strategies theory could move beyond the division into short-term versus long-term pair bonds, and suggest that cohabitation represents one mid-term form of temporal and psychological commitment to a romantic partner.

Climate change is a topic of worldwide relevance, not only because of the recent heat waves affecting the globe as a whole but also because of the importance of conserving the ecologically balanced environment itself. Climate is a vital aspect of human survival and ecological balance. With this in mind, the world is turning its attention to Brazil and the Amazon rainforest, the target of recurrent attacks that have resulted in high percentages of deforestation. It is known that since the signing of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty by the eight countries of the Amazon biome, many new challenges have arisen; however, the main commitment signed in the treaty of July 1978 remains a common commitment (and agenda) for the preservation and conservation of the environment and the rational use of the Amazon's natural resources. In addition to preserving the Amazon territory, the development of the Amazon territory is prioritized in order to achieve sustainable development. As a result, deforestation liabilities must be tackled and combated through reforestation and ecological restoration. According to preliminary government data from the Space Research Institute, deforestation alerts in the Amazon may have fallen by 39 percent in the first half of 2023. What emerges within the topics of climate change and consequent climate litigation is climate law as a means of resisting and confronting the climate crisis. Nevertheless, the Brazilian government itself was ordered by the Supreme Court to take action because of omissions by the Brazilian government responsible for the increase in deforestation in the Amazon in relation to the Climate Fund and the paralyzing of the Amazon Fund. As a response to climate litigation, what is assumed to be necessary is an understanding of the so-called ecological Constitution and the duty to sustainable development, and ecological solidarity in a broad normative perspective, in its governmental actions and not being silent on environmental positions; in addition, Brazil's commitment to its own normative order, to international treaties and agendas, such as Agenda 2030, must be part of the Brazilian agenda in order to regain environmental prominence. To achieve the expected goals, the methodology used is bibliographical, documentary, and exploratory, using the deductive method.

Though development of cities are driven by many economic factors and ecological driving factors are acknowledged in recent times, water resources still lack importance. The significance of urban water bodies are mainly in two ways: one is to help the survival of the water dependent ecosystem and landscape and the other is to recharge the water beneath the ground. Since ancient times water had a great role in human culture in many ways through rituals and lifestyle, especially in India. Creating huge man made reservoirs, for agriculture and day to day uses. Unfortunately, in recent times anthropogenic activities have created the worst phase of degradation of natural resources and mainly water. So as an urban designer there is a great social responsibility and commitment for building up a better and healthy city have a key role in integrating such natural resources positively with the newly heading urbanized world. In this study an attempt to make a qualitative analysis of the current scenario of urban ponds in Trivandrum has been made.

Though urban areas globally cover only about 3% of the earth’s land surface, the UAGs have received a little attention with regards to their ecological facilities. The main aim of this study remains to assess and compare the choice of ecological management options, which guidelines to improvement of environmental-friendly forms of gardening provided by two different UAGs, e.g. Užuovėja (U) and Nemunas (N) in Kaunas distr., central Lithuania. The gardeners were interviewed to identify their preference of different gardening means and reasons for their ecological choices using a questionnaire (n = 60) containing questions about gardening behaviour were surveyed. The interviewed gardeners differ in their commitment and motivation, their agro-ecological practices, and their habits when growing fruits and vegetables. Ecological means, e.g. self-generated compost, turf and organic fertilizer were applied in 43.3-16.7; 16.7-6.7 and 43.3-16.7% in UAGs N and U, respectively. Only 3 or 10% (N) and 4 or 13.3% (U), of respondent regularly used chemical control means regularly. Unfortunately, only 11 or 36.7% (N) and 4 or 13.3% (U) of respondents regularly and sometimes used biological control means. While 7 or 23.3% (N) and 1 or 3.3% (U) of respondents apply biological control means on rare occasion. The large amount of gardeners’, i.e. 63% (N) and 80% (U) employs the natural water resources. This study shows that choice of the urban gardeners for the farming options proceeds the act of production through the conscious manipulation of natural resources, by the means of mobilizing practices (soil improvement, pest control means, watering), as well as supported by knowledge and sustainable viewpoint. Nonetheless, local ecosystem services will support gardener motivation, enhancing knowledge of sustainable gardening, authorizing the rational use of bio-control and soil improvement products, expresses an essential need for rational usage of water and other environmental resources.

Man, as a natural being, modifies the ecosystems of which he is an integral part, but this does not diminish his obligation to leave the environment to his descendants, at least in the state in which he "got it for use" from his ancestors. The growth trend observed in the field of extraction of natural resources, global population, gross domestic product and waste disposal is the basis for the development of the global environmental crisis, which is caused by unreasonable and irresponsible human behavior towards nature and its resources. The ecological crisis, as a disturbance and threat to the balance of the natural and social components of the environment and consequently human existence, is a trend that is intensively influencing the shaping of life in the 21st century. Unsustainable use of natural resources in combination with continuous increase in waste causes concern for human survival and requires immediate transformation and transition from dominant economic models based on linear patterns of production, consumption and disposal, to closed-loop models - circular models. The process of harmonization of technological progress and economic growth and development, with the goals of preserving the quality of the environment, has developed the need to build the innovative potential of the economy and apply the principles of sustainable development, as a strategic commitment of almost all countries in the 21st century. In this regard, a change in worldview - the development of environmental knowledge is necessary and is the primary goal in establishing the optimal, interaction of man and nature. The aim of the work is to point out the negative consequences of irresponsible behavior towards the environment and natural resources.

ABSTRACT Background: Despite rapid economic growth, stunting affects one third of the children under five population in Indonesia. The Government of Indonesia (GoI) realizing the problem, established the National Strategy to Accelerate Stunting Prevention as a national priority program for 2017 to 2021. The GoI plans to maximize the use of resources, policies, and programs that encompasses nutrition-specific and sensitive interventions directed to the first 100 days of life. This study aimed to explore the extent of program planning, budgeting, and implementation related to stunting prevention at district and village level as well as to understand the challenges presented to converge intervention. Subjects and Method: A case study with ecological approach was conducted in 10 villages from five districts in Indonesia. The study method included focus group discussions with 70 district officials and 100 village representatives, interviews with 12 key informants from district planning agency, document analysis, and reflective journaling. The data were reported descriptively. Results: Most head districts, officials from relevant departments and village leaders committed to stunting prevention following the vice president decree of stunting as a national priority. As a result, programs and budget were in place and local initiatives to prevent stunting were on the rise. Despite the commitment, many expressed ambivalences and disregarded the issue as a mere short stature (genetic variation). Thus, problems related to efficiency, coverage, and sustainability persists as maintaining motivation among staffs were difficult. In some settings, the situation was exacerbated by factors such as high financial dependency, misconception, and poor gender relation. Conclusion: The policy and programs to control stunting among children in Indonesia are in place. However, challenges occur due to the complexity in governance system as well as lack of political will. Better communication and cooperation are essential for well implemented policies. Wineries and their managers today are increasingly demonstrating the critical role of ambidextrous leadership in balancing the maintenance of traditional winemaking methods with advancement towards green transitions. This form of leadership, which involves both exploiting existing capabilities and exploring new opportunities, is essential in navigating the complexities of modern winemaking. Ambidextrous leaders in family-run wineries excel not only in preserving the rich heritage of winemaking but also in embracing ecological innovation and sustainability. The dual capability extends to aligning the goals of the family and the business. Ambidextrous leaders skilfully manage family relationships, values and objectives while ensuring that these align with the business’ growth, innovation, and environmental stewardship goals. By doing so, they create a harmonious blend of family unity and business success. This approach allows wineries to integrate respect for traditional winemaking with a commitment to environmental protection, signifying a progressive industry that honours its past while contributing positively to the future. Ambidextrous leadership in wineries thus emerges as a key factor in achieving a sustainable and successful balance between tradition and modernity, family values and business goals and environmental consciousness and industry progress.

Healthy and resilient ecosystems underpin our societies and economies. Collapse of just a few ecosystem services such pollination, timber from forests and food from marine fisheries, could result in a global GDP decline of USD 2.7 trillion annually by 2030. We are not investing sufficiently in nature, resulting in an estimated nature funding gap as high as US$800 billion per year. Redirecting financial flows towards nature-positive investments and activities is critical. Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs) play an instrumental role to support a nature-positive future, aligned with the forthcoming post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework, the G7 Climate, Energy and Environment Ministers Communiqué of May 27th, 2022, and with the Joint Statement on Nature, People, and Planet endorsed by the 10 MDBs at COP27. This Statement included an intention to work towards a joint understanding of the term 'nature positive' in the context of operations and investments and a goal to develop tools and methodologies for tracking 'nature positive' investments across MDB portfolios. This technical note is a first step towards meeting this commitment. This work presents options for defining nature-positive finance, based on definitions and principles identified in a bibliographical review drawing on global expertise and developing frameworks and taxonomies. Acknowledging the variety of institutional and ecological contexts in which MDBs operate, the report offers a menu of options to screen nature-positive activities as well as a variety of approaches to determine the nature-positive contribution to investments. Finally, the report proposes principles for tracking and reporting on these investments.

Caribou (Rangifer tarandus) are an integral part of the ecological and cultural fabric of northwest Alaska. Western Arctic Herd (WAH) caribou roam over this entire region, including all 5 Arctic Network (ARCN) Inventory and Monitoring Program?s National Park units. Conservation of healthy caribou populations is specifically mentioned within the enabling legislation (Alaska National Interested Lands Conservation Act or ANILCA) for 3 of these park units and is of importance to subsistence hunters. Caribou are, by far, the most abundant large mammal in northwest Alaska and are famous for their long-distance migrations and large population oscillations. For these reasons, the ARCN parks chose WAH caribou as a Vital Sign for long-term monitoring. This report documents the monitoring results of this Vital Sign during its 14th year (September 2022?August 2023) of implementation. Results from the previous years of monitoring are also included for ease of comparison. Periodic syntheses of these data will be performed and reported on as appropriate. National Park Service (NPS) monitoring of the WAH is done in conjunction and cooperation with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADFG). Thanks to a 2015 data sharing agreement, the report includes data funded by the ADFG dating back to September 2013. That particular year was chosen as it represents when the ADFG started deploying a substantial number of GPS collars on an 8-hour relocation schedule. Monitoring of the herd relies heavily on the use of Global Positioning System (GPS) radio telemetry collars that are capable of transmitting location data to a satellite. Given the extremely remote area that the WAH inhabits, this system provides the most efficient and accurate means to track individual caribou. These data are utilized to monitor the timing and location of migrations, as well as seasonal distributions of WAH caribou. Monitoring movement and the phenology of movement is perhaps the simplest means to track the influences of climate change, natural perturbations, development, and other potential impacts on a species?an analysis of which is outside the scope of this current report. This report also documents the NPS commitment and involvement with the WAH Working Group. The group is composed of important stakeholders including representatives for rural villages, sport hunters, conservationists, hunting guides, hunting transporters, and reindeer herders. In addition, all the agencies charged with managing the WAH, including the ADFG, NPS, US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) and Bureau of Land Management (BLM), serve as advisors to the group. Information gathered by the Caribou Vital Sign monitoring program are intended to supplement and complement existing data streams gathered by the other cooperating agencies and will be important in future management decisions.

This special report summarizes the regional workshop held 24–26 April 2018 at the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) Ecological Services Office in Carlsbad, California on the importance of collaboration among federal, state, and nongovernmental agencies to facilitate the recovery of threatened and endangered species (TES). This workshop focused primarily on one species, the least Bell’s vireo (LBVI), and how to achieve full recovery and eventual delisting through agency partnerships. A major theme of the workshop was applying the Endangered Species Act (ESA) Section 7(a)(1) conservation planning process as a building block towards recovery of LBVI—as well as other threatened, endangered, and at-risk riparian species within the Southwest. The main objective of this workshop was to assemble an interagency and interdisciplinary group of wildlife biologists and managers to detail how the Section 7(a)(1) conservation planning approach, in consultation with the USFWS, can assist in the recovery of LBVI primarily on federal lands but also other public and private lands. Goals of this workshop were to (1) review Section 7(a)(1); (2) outline LBVI ecosystem processes, life history, threats, and conservation solutions; and (3) develop and organize agency commitments to collaborative conservation practices.

Marine protected areas (MPAs) are increasingly established worldwide to protect and restore degraded ecosystems. However, the level of protection varies among MPAs and has been found to affect the outcome of the closure. In no-take zones (NTZs), no fishing or extraction of marine organisms is allowed. The EU Commission recently committed to protect 30% of European waters by 2030 through the updated Biodiversity Strategy. Importantly, one third of these 30% should be of strict protection. Exactly what is meant by strict protection is not entirely clear, but fishing would likely have to be fully or largely prohibited in these areas. This new target for strictly protected areas highlights the need to evaluate the ecological effects of NTZs, particularly in regions like northern Europe where such evaluations are scarce. The Swedish NTZs made up approximately two thirds of the total areal extent of NTZs in Europe a decade ago. Given that these areas have been closed for at least 10 years and can provide insights into long-term effects of NTZs on fish and ecosystems, they are of broad interest in light of the new 10% strict protection by 2030 commitment by EU member states. In total, eight NTZs in Swedish coastal and offshore waters were evaluated in the current report, with respect to primarily the responses of focal species for the conservation measure, but in some of the areas also ecosystem responses. Five of the NTZs were established in 2009-2011, as part of a government commission, while the other three had been established earlier. The results of the evaluations are presented in a synthesis and also in separate, more detailed chapters for each of the eight NTZs. Overall, the results suggest that NTZs can increase abundances and biomasses of fish and decapod crustaceans, given that the closed areas are strategically placed and of an appropriate size in relation to the life cycle of the focal species. A meta-regression of the effects on focal species of the NTZs showed that CPUE was on average 2.6 times higher after three years of protection, and 3.8 times higher than in the fished reference areas after six years of protection. The proportion of old and large individuals increased in most NTZs, and thereby also the reproductive potential of populations. The increase in abundance of large predatory fish also likely contributed to restoring ecosystem functions, such as top-down control. These effects appeared after a 5-year period and in many cases remained and continued to increase in the longer term (>10 years). In the two areas where cod was the focal species of the NTZs, positive responses were weak, likely as an effect of long-term past, and in the Kattegat still present, recruitment overfishing. In the Baltic Sea, predation by grey seal and cormorant was in some cases so high that it likely counteracted the positive effects of removing fisheries and led to stock declines in the NTZs. In most cases, the introduction of the NTZs has likely decreased the total fishing effort rather than displacing it to adjacent areas. In the Kattegat NTZ, however, the purpose was explicitly to displace an unselective coastal mixed bottom-trawl fishery targeting Norway lobster and flatfish to areas where the bycatches of mature cod were smaller. In two areas that were reopened to fishing after 5 years, the positive effects of the NTZs on fish stocks eroded quickly to pre-closure levels despite that the areas remained closed during the spawning period, highlighting that permanent closures may be necessary to maintain positive effects. We conclude from the Swedish case studies that NTZs may well function as a complement to other fisheries management measures, such as catch, effort and gear regulations. The experiences from the current evaluation show that NTZs can be an important tool for fisheries management especially for local coastal fish populations and areas with mixed fisheries, as well as in cases where there is a need to counteract adverse ecosystem effects of fishing. NTZs are also needed as reference for marine environmental management, and for understanding the effects of fishing on fish populations and other ecosystem components in relation to other pressures. MPAs where the protection of both fish and their habitats is combined may be an important instrument for ecosystembased management, where the recovery of large predatory fish may lead to a restoration of important ecosystem functions and contribute to improving decayed habitats. With the new Biodiversity Strategy, EUs level of ambition for marine conservation increases significantly, with the goal of 30% of coastal and marine waters protected by 2030, and, importantly, one third of these areas being strictly protected. From a conservation perspective, rare, sensitive and/or charismatic species or habitats are often in focus when designating MPAs, and displacement of fisheries is then considered an unwanted side effect. However, if the establishment of strictly protected areas also aims to rebuild fish stocks, these MPAs should be placed in heavily fished areas and designed to protect depleted populations by accounting for their home ranges to generate positive outcomes. Thus, extensive displacement of fisheries is required to reach benefits for depleted populations, and need to be accounted for e.g. by specific regulations outside the strictly protected areas. These new extensive EU goals for MPA establishment pose a challenge for management, but at the same time offer an opportunity to bridge the current gap between conservation and fisheries management.
