e11513 Background: Human epidermal growth factor receptors and their ligands are involved in carcinogenesis. Four ERBB receptors have been identified; ERBB1 (EB1), ERBB2 (EB2), ERBB3 (EB3) and ERBB4 (EB4). EB2 is over-expressed/amplified in 20-30% of BCa. Molecularly targeting agents, such as pertuzumab (P), in combination with standard therapy have shown important clinical results in EB2 (+) BCa patients. The aim of the project is to evaluate the expression/localization and dimerization pattern of EB1, EB2, EB3, EB4 in breast cancer cell lines (BCCLs) with or without heregulin-1 (He) and various EB2, EB3 and He inhibitors. The identification of a molecular phenotype of low-expressing and acquired resistant high-expressing EB2 BCa will enhance the targeted use of EB2 inhibitors in certain BCa patients Methods: Using confocal microscopy, localization/expression patterns were studied for EB1, EB2, EB3, EB4 in various human BCCs; here presented in MCF7 and SKBR3. Additionally, the dimerization pattern of EB2, EB3 and/or EB4 was studied with and without stimulation with He plus or minus P (kindly provided by Genentech, US). The dimers formation was studied using proximity ligation assay and immunofluorescence (DUOLINK; OLINK Biosciences, Sweden). Results: In MCF7-He stimulated cells EB2/EB3, EB2/EB4 and EB1/EB3 dimmers showed a 3-fold decrease formation compared to untreated cells. The EB1/EB4 dimmers were not significantly affected. After P addition in MCF7 cells a 3-fold decrease of dimmer formation was noticed compared to untreated cells for EB2/EB3, EB2/EB4 and EB1/EB3. The EB1/EB4 formation seemed only slightly affected by P. SKBR3-He stimulated cells resulted in a similar decrease of EB2/EB3, EB2/EB4 and EB1/EB3 dimmer formation compared to untreated cells. In the same BCLL, EB1/EB4 dimmer did not show any decrease after He treatment compared to untreated control cells. Further results quantified and analyzed for statistical significance will be shown Conclusions: The addition of P seems to block ligand-dependent heterodimerization of EB2 with other ERBB family members, such as EB3 and EB4.

Buah Andaliman (Zanthoxylum acanthopodium) dan Kecombrang (Eltingera elatior) merupakan jenis tanaman rempah lokal yang tergolong kedalam keanekaragaman sumber daya alam di Sumatera Utara. Kedua jenis tanaman rempah ini memiliki kandungan ekstrak heksana, methanol, dan asetat yang berfungsi sebagai senyawa antimikrobial. Pemanfaatan telur asin belum dilakukan secara optimal melalui penggunaan rempah buah andaliman dan kecombrang. Kualitas telur asin yang rendah dapat dipengaruhi oleh aktifitas mikroba yang dapat merusak kualitas protein dalam telur. Sebanyak 60 butir telur itik segar digunakan dalam penelitian. Rancangan yang digunakan adalah Rancangan Acak Lengkap (RAL) dengan 4 perlakuan dan 5 ulangan. Perlakuan yang digunakan meliputi P1 (Kontrol), P2 (telur diasinkan dengan 25% EBA + 25% EBK), P3 (telur diasinkan dengan 50% EBA + 50% EBK) dan P4 (telur diasinkan dengan 75% EBA + 75% EBK). Ekstrak tanaman rempah yang digunakan merupakan ekstrak kasar melalui teknik penyaringan konvensional yang disebut ekstrak kasar buah andaliman (EBA) dan kecombrang (EBK). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa peningkatan level tanaman rempah menurunkan total populasi bakteri E. Coli sampai 1.5 x 109 cfu/g dan meningkatkan populasi bakteri Bacillus sp sampai 0.1 x 108 cfu/g. Dari hasil penelitian disimpulkan bahwa pemanfaatan ekstrak kasar buah andaliman dan kecombrang dapat memperbaiki kualitas telur asin.

Materi penelitian adalah 160 ekor ayam broiler strain Lohman unsex yang dipelihara selama 6 minggu. Penelitian menggunakan rancangan acak lengkap (RAL) dengan 5 perlakuan dan 4 ulangan, setiap ulangan menggunakan 8 ekor ayam broiler. Ransum perlakuan yang diberikan, yaitu T0 (ransum basal/RB), T1(RB+0,15% EBK), T2 (RB+0,3% EBK), T3 (RB+0,15% EKK), T4 (RB+0,3% EKK). Data hasil penelitian dianalisis ragam dan dilanjutkan dengan duncan multiple range test. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pemberian prebiotik SOS dari EBK dan EKK pada semua level berpengaruh nyata (P<0,05) terhadap persentase lemak abdominal dan bobot daging ayam broiler, namun tidak berpengaruh nyata (P>0,05) terhadap massa lemak daging.

Data dianalisis ragam dan dilanjutkan dengan uji wilayah ganda Duncan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pemberian soybean oligosakarida dari EBK dan EKK nyata (P<0,05) meningkatkan bobot karkas, namun tidak berpengaruh nyata terhadap kandungan protein dan REP. Simpulan penelitian adalah pemberian soybean oligosakarida dari ekstrak bungkil dan kulit kedelai sampai level 0,3% dapat meningkatkan bobot karkas ayam broiler.

It further explores the impact of ERAs and EBK on organization attractiveness (OA) and firm performance (FP). The study shows that advertisement, publicity and word of mouth of ERAs impact all aspects of EBK such as employer familiarity, employer image or job association, and employer reputation. Employer reputation and job association are significant for most organization and does impact OA, while brand awareness and job association impact FP. The prominent sources of employment information were the Internet and networking.

With the increasing application of global navigation satellite system (GNSS) technology in the field of meteorology, satellite-derived zenith tropospheric delay (ZTD) and precipitable water vapor (PWV) data have been used to explore the spatial coverage pattern of PM2.5 concentrations. In this study, the PM2.5 concentration data obtained from 340 PM2.5 ground stations in south-central China were used to analyze the variation patterns of PM2.5 in south-central China at different time periods, and six PM2.5 interpolation models were developed in the region. The spatial and temporal PM2.5 variation patterns in central and southern China were analyzed from the perspectives of time series variations and spatial distribution characteristics, and six types of interpolation models were established in central and southern China. (1) Through correlation analysis, and exploratory regression and geographical detector methods, the correlation analysis of PM2.5-related variables showed that the GNSS-derived PWV and ZTD were negatively correlated with PM2.5, and that their significances and contributions to the spatial analysis were good. (2) Three types of suitable variable combinations were selected for modeling through a collinearity diagnosis, and six types of models (geographically weighted regression (GWR), geographically weighted regression kriging (GWRK), geographically weighted regression—empirical bayesian kriging (GWR-EBK), multiscale geographically weighted regression (MGWR), multiscale geographically weighted regression kriging (MGWRK), and multiscale geographically weighted regression—empirical bayesian kriging (MGWR-EBK)) were constructed. The overall R2 of the GWR-EBK model construction was the best (annual: 0.962, winter: 0.966, spring: 0.926, summer: 0.873, and autumn: 0.908), and the interpolation accuracy of the GWR-EBK model constructed by inputting ZTD was the best overall, with an average RMSE of 3.22 μg/m3 recorded, while the GWR-EBK model constructed by inputting PWV had the highest interpolation accuracy in winter, with an RMSE of 4.5 μg/m3 recorded; these values were 2.17% and 4.26% higher than the RMSE values of the other two types of models (ZTD and temperature) in winter, respectively. (3) The introduction of the empirical Bayesian kriging method to interpolate the residuals of the models (GWR and MGWR) and to then correct the original interpolation results of the models was the most effective, and the accuracy improvement percentage was better than that of the ordinary kriging method. The average improvement ratios of the GWRK and GWR-EBK models compared with that of the GWR model were 5.04% and 14.74%, respectively, and the average improvement ratios of the MGWRK and MGWR-EBK models compared with that of the MGWR model were 2.79% and 12.66%, respectively. (4) Elevation intervals and provinces were classified, and the influence of the elevation and the spatial distribution of the plane on the accuracy of the PM2.5 regional model was discussed. The experiments showed that the accuracy of the constructed regional model decreased as the elevation increased. The accuracies of the models in representing Henan, Hubei and Hunan provinces were lower than those of the models in representing Guangdong and Guangxi provinces.

Latar belakang : Oksidan yang terkandung dalam asap rokok dapat menyebabkan terjadinya stres oksidatif. Buah kersen (Muntingia calabura) mengandung antioksidan diantaranya flavonoid. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengetahui efek proteksi ekstrak buah kersen terhadap kerusakan histologis alveolus paru tikus Sprague dawley yang terpapar asap rokokMetode : Tikus sejumlah dibagi 4 kelompok, kemudian di papar asap rokok 7 batang perhari dan ekstrak buah kersen (EBK) selama 4 minggu. Kelompok pertama sebagai kontrol (K1) diberi plasebo, kelompok kedua (K2) dipapar asap rokok saja, sedangkan sisanya merupakankelompok Perlakuan 1 (P1) diberi EBK 100mg/kgBB/hari dan Perlakuan 2 (P2) diberi EBK 200mg/kgBB/hari. Perbedaan derajat kerusakan alveolus di analisis dengan Kruskal-Wallis Test.Hasil : Rerata derajat kerusakan alveolus pada kelompok kontrol (K1)sejumlah (69,44) kelompok perlakuan 1 (P1) sejumlah (80,00) dan kelompok perlakuan 2 (P2) sejumlah (79,63) sedangkan yang terendah yaitu pada kelompok kontrol paparan asap rokok (K2) sejumlah (61,11). Nilai P = 0.464, menunjukkan bahwa tidak terdapat perbedaaan yangbermakna derajat kerusakan alveolus antar kelompok, dimana rerata derajat kerusakan alveolus paru > 60% (kerusakan berat).Simpulan : Pemberian ekstrak buah kersen tidak berpengaruh terhadap gambaran mikroskopis paru tikus yang di papar asap rokok. Denna rapport är resultatet av mitt examensarbete som utfördes på uppdrag av GKN. Syftet med arbetet är att utvärdera manualverken som berör RM12-motorn och i en teknisk rapport beskriva hur manualerna upplevs av den tekniska personalen på Sveriges flygflottiljer. Efterlevs de givna instruktionerna som avsett eller krävs det uppdateringar och/eller förtydligande av manualverken? Arbetet är främst inriktat mot de manualer som berör efterbrännkammarmodulen. Arbetet omfattar studier på flygflottiljerna F7 samt F17. Utvärderingens undersökningsarbete utfördes i form av enkätundersökningar, Semistrukturerade intervjuer/samtal samt observationer av det dagliga arbetet. Det är av stor vikt att teknisk personal följer motormanualerna som avsett, att inspektioner utförs enligt föreskrifterna samt att de angivna skadetoleranserna tas på allvar. En förutsättning för detta är att manualerna är lätta att förstå och följa. Konsekvenserna av utebliven eller bristfällig inspektion innebär direkt fara för flygsäkerheten. Resultaten är baserade på information som inhämtades i samband med besöken på flygflottiljerna och visar att GKN bör se över LMI-manualen och i vissa fall förtydliga enstaka instruktioner. Det finns ett behov från användaren att använda sig av verkliga fotografier vid bedömning av tillåtna/otillåtna skador. Det finns en osäkerhet bland den tekniska personalen angående den engelska manualen. Även ”Simplified Technical English” bör vara mer förankrat hos användarna av föreskrifterna.
This report is the result of my graduation project conducted on behalf of GKN. The purpose of this work is to evaluate the manual´s involving RM12 engine and in a technical report describe how the manuals are perceived by the technical staff at the Swedish Air Force squadrons. Are the given instructions in the manuals perceived as intended or does it require updates and / or clarification of the manuals? The project is mainly focused on the manuals relating the afterburner. The work includes studies on F7 and F17. The evaluation survey was conducted in the form of questionnaires, semi-structured interviews / conversations and observations of the daily work. It is of great importance that technical staff follows the engine manuals as intended, that inspections are carried out as prescribed and that the specified damage tolerances which is given is taken seriously. A prerequisite for this is that the manuals are easy to understand and follow. The consequences of inadequate inspection are a direct threat to the flight safety. The result are based on information collected in connection with visits to the Air Force and shows that GKN should review the LMI -manual and in some cases clarify instructions given. There is a need from the customer to use actual photographs in the assessment of permissible / impermissible damage. There is some uncertainty among the technical staff towards the English manuals. Even "Simplified Technical English" should be more anchored with the technical staff that uses the manuals.

The engine of JAS 39 Gripen, RM12, has recently been equipped with a new flameholder and a new engine inlet. This change has caused an increased noise level from the engine when the afterburner is in use. The noise level reaches its peak when the afterburner is partially used. The problem is thought to be unstable combustion in the regions around the flameholder. A solution to the problem has been proposed by Volvo Aero. The idea is to modify the software in the engine control unit (FADEC) that changes the airflows in the engine. This master thesis implements the proposed changes and analyzes the effects of this implementation. The analysis is done by simulations of a model of the engine that Volvo Aero has created and implemented in MatrixX/SystemBuild. Simulations showed that it is possible to achieve the desired result by the software changes. Further the simulations showed some problems with stability for the engine when controlled by the modified control unit. This was solved by implementing a filter in the FADEC software.

Le facteur de transcription ZEBRA (EB1) du virus d'Epstein-Barr joue un rôle essentiel dans l'initiation de l'infection lytique et la production virale. L'ubinucléine a été identifiée comme un partenaire cellulaire de ZEBRA, capable de l'empêcher de se fixer à ses séquences d'ADN cibles. Le rôle de l'ubinucléine dans la cellule demeure inconnu, ainsi que les conséquences de son interaction avec ZEBRA dans les cellules infectées par l'EBV. Notre travail a permis, d'abord, de mieux caractériser l'ubinucléine dans la cellule épithéliale en l'identifiant comme une protéine des jonctions serrées. L'ubinucléine a été proposée comme un nouveau membre de la famille des protéines NACos (nuclear and adhesion complex components) possèdant une double localisation, les noyaux et les jonctions des cellules. Afin de mieux comprendre son rôle dans la cellule épithéliale, nous avons étudié par une approche protéomique couplée à la spectrométrie de masse les partenaires de l'ubinucléine et identifié les protéines LYRIC et RACK-1. Nos résultats suggèrent que l'ubinucléine est impliquée dans différents processus biologiques tels que la régulation de la prolifération et de l'adhésion cellulaires. Enfin, dans les cellules épithéliales infectées par l'EBV, les fonctions de l'ubinucléine semblent dépendre de sa localisation cellulaire. Au niveau nucléaire, l'ubinucléine régule négativement le cycle lytique et la production de particules virales en empêchant ZEBRA et d'autres facteurs cellulaires de se fixer à leurs promoteurs de type AP-1. The ZEBRA (EB1) transcription factor of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is crucial for initiation of lytic infection and viral production. Ubinuclein (Ubn-1) has been identified as a cellular partner of ZEBRA enabling to prevent ZEBRA-DNA interaction. The role of Ubn-1 in the cell remains elusive as well as the consequences of its interaction with ZEBRA in EBV infected cells. In our work, we have characterized Ubn-1 as a new protein of epithelial cells tight junctions (TJ) and a new member of NACos (nuclear and adhesion complex components) proteins with a dual cellular localisation, the nuclei and the junctions of the cells. Using a proteomic approach coupled to mass spectrometry, we have then studied interacting partners of Ubn-1 in order to get more insights on its role in epithelial cells and identified LYRIC and RACK-1 proteins. Our results suggest that Ubn-1 is involved in different biological processes such regulation of cells proliferation and cell-cell contacts. Finally, in EBV infected epithelial cells, Ubn-1 functions seem depend on its cellular localisation. Nuclear Ubn-1 regulates negatively lytic cycle and virus production interfering with ZEBRA and others cellular factors in the activation of AP-1 promoters. When Ubn-1 is sequestered in TJ, Ubn-1 can no longer act as a repressor of ZEBRA which is free to activate the EBV productive cycle

Viruses are known to be associated with 20% of human cancers. Epstein Barr virus (EBV) in particular is the first virus associated with human cancers. Here, we computationally detect EBV and explore the effects of this virus across cancers by taking advantage of the fact that EBV microRNAs (miRNAs) and Epstein Barr virus small RNAs (EBERs) are expressed at all viral latencies. We identify and characterize two sub-populations of EBV positive tumors: those with high levels of EBV miRNA and EBERS expression and those with medium levels of expression. Based on principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical clustering of viral miRNAs across all samples we observe a pattern of expression for these EBV miRNAs which is correlated with both the tumor cell type (B cell versus epithelial cell) and with the overall levels of expression of these miRNAs. We further investigated the effect of the levels of EBV miRNAs with the overall survival of patients across cancers. Through Kaplan Meier survival analysis we observe a significant correlation with levels of EBV miRNAs and lower survival in adult AML patients. We also designed a machine learning model for risk assessment of EBV in association with adult AML and other clinical factors. Our next aim was to identify targets of EBV miRNAs, hence, we used a combination of previously known methodologies for miRNA target detection in addition to a multivariable regression approach to identify targets of these viral miRNAs in stomach cancer. Finally, we investigate the variations across EBV subtype specific EBNA3C gene which interacts with the host immune system. Preliminary data suggests potential regional variations plus higher pathogenicity of subtype 1 in comparison to subtype 2 EBV. Overall, these studies further our understanding of how EBV manipulates the tumor microenvironment across cancer subtypes.

Chez les eucaryotes superieurs, les arn messagers sont dans leur grande majorite pourvus d'introns. L'epissage de ces introns semble etre un pre-requis a leur export nucleaire et a leur traduction dans le cytoplasme. Il existe des mecanismes particuliers permettant d'outrepasser cette regle. En particulier, des systemes d'export d'arn non episses ont ete selectionnes chez certains virus afin d'echapper a ce controle cellulaire. Le travail presente dans cette these porte sur l'etude de deux proteines virales, rev de hiv-1 (human immunodeficiency virus 1) et eb2 de ebv (epstein barr virus), ayant la capacite d'exporter des arn messagers non episses. Dans un premier temps, nous nous sommes interesses a la proteine rev qui fait la navette entre le noyau et le cytoplasme, et permet l'export des arn non episses ou incompletement episses de hiv-1, a partir desquels sont exprimees les proteines de structure du virus. Nous avons ainsi identifie une nouvelle proteine interagissant avec le signal d'export nucleaire (nes) de rev, appelee nlp-1 (nucleoporin like protein-1). Nous avons montre que cette proteine presente les caracteristiques d'une nucleoporine, et qu'elle interagit avec crm1, le facteur cellulaire assurant l'export des proteines portant un nes riche en leucines, homologue a celui de rev. La deuxieme partie de ce travail a concerne l'etude de la proteine eb2, un activateur post-transcriptionnel de ebv. Nous avons montre que eb2 facilite l'accumulation cytoplasmique de certains arn non episses et qu'elle fait, de meme que rev, la navette entre le noyau et le cytoplasme. Ce resultat est en faveur de l'hypothese selon laquelle eb2 pourrait faciliter l'expression de certains genes precoces et tardifs de ebv qui sont depourvus d'introns. La suite de mes travaux a permis de conclure que cette proteine est exportee par une voie independante de crm1 differente de celle empruntee par rev.

The ability to accurately predict dose from electron backscatter created by internal lead shielding utilized during various superficial electron beam treatments (EBT), such as lip carcinoma, is required to avoid the possibility of an overdose. Methods for predicting this dose include the use of empirical equations or physically measuring the electron backscatter factor (EBF) and upstream electron backscatter intensity (EBI). The EBF and upstream EBI are defined as the ratio of dose at, or upstream, from the shielding interface with and without the shielding present respectively. The accuracy of these equations for the local treatment machines was recognised as an area that required verification; in addition the ability of XiO's electron Monte Carlo (eMC) treatment planning algorithm to handle lead interfaces was examined. A Monte Carlo simulation using the EGSnrc package of a Siemens Artiste Linac was developed for 6, 9, 12, and 15 MeV electron energies and was verified against physical measurements to within an accuracy of 2 % and 2 mm. Electron backscatter dose distributions were predicated using the MC model, Gafchromic film, and XiO eMC, which when compared showed that XiO's eMC could not accurately calculate dose at the lead interface. Several MC simulations of lead interfaces at different depths, corresponding to energies of 0.2-14 MeV at the interfaces, were used to validate the accuracy of the equations, with the results concluding that the equation could not accurately predict EBF and EBI values, especially at low energies. From this data, an equation was derived to allow estimation of the EBF and upstream EBI, which agreed to within 1.3 % for the EBF values and can predict the upstream EBI to a clinically acceptable level for all energies.

Metallurgically bonded CLAD pipes consist of a thick carbon steel bulk and a thin layer of a corrosive resistant alloy (CRA). In order to perform a girth weld of such pipes, the clad layers of both parts must geometrically fit to each other. Thus, the field weldability of CLAD pipes are to a large extent determined by dimensional tolerances of pipe ends, which have to be smaller than CRA thickness, typically 3mm. To ensure such tight tolerances, EBK has developed and installed a new calibration machine called Impander and corresponding cold sizing technology, in which the pipes are compressed (impanded) from outside. Thus, the traditional JCO manufacturing process is supplemented by a Compression step, which leads to the abbreviation JCOC. In contrast to an expander, the Impader tools operate from the pipe outside and produce tight dimensional tolerances without contacting the sensitive CRA layer. Controlled adjustment and final inspection of pipe dimensions demand an accurate measurement of pipe shape. For this, a laser tracker which allows precise measurements of complete pipe circumference with an accuracy of 0.1 mm both from inside and outside was installed and a corresponding evaluation software was developed. The paper gives a comparison of different pipe production technologies pointing out the advantages of the JCOC process using the Impander for manufacturing of CLAD pipes. An analysis of the influence of dimensional tolerances on edge misalignment of two pipe ends during girth welding is given. The precise laser measurements allow to mark exactly the largest and smallest diameter on pipe ends, that helps to reduce time for pipe adjustment during field welding. In addition, using numerical and experimental investigations, the pipe impansion was shown to significantly reduce residual stresses in the pipe. Thus, when cutting the pipe, a change of pipe shape due to springback effect is considerably reduced. Additionally, the compressive strengthening in hoop direction due to cold work by impansion in combination with a low ovality along the whole pipe length considerably increases the external collapse pressure, which makes the pipes particularly suitable for deep water applications. So far, this has been experimentally proven with a full-scale-collapse-test on a conventional pipe, but is suggested to be applicable for the CLAD pipes too.

Introduction. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) causes recurrent infectious mononucleosis-like symptoms. Today poisons of insects and animals were shown to be rich sources of antimicrobial substances (peptides) and contain a wide range of active biological compounds. Antimicrobial peptides play an important role in the immune response of the host’s innate immunity to pathogenic microorganisms. Based on antimicrobial peptides in Russia, an antiviral drug Allokin-alpha has been developed. The active ingredient of the drug is cytokine-like peptide alloferon. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the effect of Allokin-alpha therapy on the amount of EBV DNA in saliva samples and clinical complaints in patients with chronic Epstein-Barr viral infection (EBI). Material and methods. 59 chronic EBI patients (45 women and 14 men; mean age 32.52 ± 1.75 years) were examined. Patients were subjected to quantitative determination of Epstein-Barr virus DNA in saliva samples by the method of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with real-time hybridization-fluorescence detection. The analytical sensitivity of the test system is 400 copies/ ml. The patients were divided into two groups: 26 patients who received Allokin-alpha therapy (9 injections subcutaneously with 1.0 mg every other day) were included in the 1st group; the 2nd group included 33 patients who received Valtrex (500 mg 2 times/day, orally) for 2 months. Results. After treatment with allocin-alpha, negative results of PCR were obtained in 59.67% of patients. After two months of Valtrex therapy, negative PCR results were obtained in only 27.27% of patients. The correlation analysis revealed a significant effect of the initial number of copies of EBV DNA on the severity of clinical complaints in the general group of EBV patients. Discussion. Allokin-alpha improves the recognition of virus-infected cells and helps to suppress viral replication. Conclusion. Allokin-alpha therapy can be recommended for the treatment of chronic EBV infection in a dose of 1 mg subcutaneously every other day with a course dose of at least 9 injections.

Introdução: Desde a década de 70, estudos apontam suposta relação entre a infecção por malária e o linfoma de Burkitt endêmico (eBL) em áreas endêmicas de malária, como em diversos países da África e, no Brasil, na região norte. No entanto, pouco se sabe sobre a concordância entre esses dois tópicos. Objetivo: Entender os avanços dos estudos dos últimos cinco anos, entre 2016 e 2021, acerca da relação entre a infecção por malária e o risco para eBL. Material e métodos: Como bases bibliográficas, esse ensaio usou o Pubmed e o Scielo explorando artigos de triagem clínica, publicações originais e relatos de caso e excluindo ensaios de análise, meta-análises e revisões sistemáticas dos últimos cinco anos. Resultados: Apenas três trabalhos inéditos com relevância foram incluídos, estes que buscam estudar a relação entre pacientes pediátricos com eBL e a testagem positiva atual ou pregressa para malária. Os avanços na área são de ordem do paradoxo da contagem de plaquetas em um estudo de caso-controle africano, em que há diminuição relativa da contagem média de plaquetas com a malária, mas aumento com o eBL; um estudo mexicano acerca da relação do risco de eBL em lactentes e infecção por transmissão vertical de EBV e malária; e estudos primários acerca da fisiopatologia da infecção por Plasmodium e o desenvolvimento de eBL. Conclusão: A baixa assiduidade dos estudos clínicos e laboratoriais acerca desse tema dificultam o pleno conhecimento e, logo, a busca por novas condutas médicas objetivando profilaxias, diagnóstico precoce e tratamentos resolutivos. Urge, portanto, novos estudos que confirmem e teorizem acerca do risco de eBL em crianças com diagnóstico de malária.

A procedure for Electron Beam Welding (EBW) was developed for the manufacturing of a follower fuel assembly made of an AA 6061-T6 aluminum straps for a U-Mo plate-type fuel proposed to be used in the future in Korea’s Kijang Research Reactor (KJRR) project. The initial welding trials of the weld samples were carried out with a high vacuum chamber using the EBW process. After investigating the welds, EB welding parameters for the full-sized samples were optimized for the required depth of penetration and weld quality. Subsequently, the weld samples made by the filler specimens showed higher shearing strengths than those of the non-filler specimens. This procedure made by EBW process was also confirmed based on the results of the shearing strength test, an examination of the macro-cross sections, and the fracture surfaces of the welded specimens.

<p>The externally bonded reinforcement (EBR) technique is one of the most widely used strategies for the flexural strengthening of reinforced concrete (RC) with fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) materials. The EBR technique offers several structural advantages when the FRP material is prestressed. The development of high shear stresses at the ends of the prestressed FRP material can cause premature FRP peeling-off failure. This premature failure can be delayed or even avoided with the use of special end-anchorage systems, like the mechanical anchorage (MA) system and the gradient anchorage (GA) system. This paper presents an experimental and a numerical study on RC slabs strengthened in flexure with prestressed carbon FRP (CFRP) laminate strips, namely: (i) one reference slab; (ii) one slab strengthened with non- prestressed externally bonded CFRP (EB-CFRP) laminate; (iii, iv) and two slabs strengthened with prestressed EB-CFRP laminates using the MA and GA systems. The performance of these simulations was compared with results of the slabs experimentally tested up to failure. A research study was undertaken to evaluate whether electron beam welding (EBW) or gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) could be utilised for repairs to the leading edges of the Turmo IV C compressor blades. These blades are manufactured from Ti-6Al-4V. The study entailed performing a series of welding trials. For the GTAW process a matching filler metal to the parent metal was used whereas for the EBW process, the welds were made autogenously. After metallographic examination of the weld microstructure, mechanical property assessments were undertaken, namely tensile and fatigue tests, the latter being a stringent test to evaluate the performance of the welded joint. The results demonstrated that the EB welds had equivalent properties to the parent metal whereas the GTA welds had poorer fatigue properties due to undesirable microstructure that resulted in the weld zone. The results achieved herein showed that the EBW process would be an appropriate technique for the restoration of these compressor blades.

This study looks at the patterns and processes of elk-vehicle collisions in the Central Canadian Rocky Mountains and analyses the demographic structure of the wildlife involved in the collisions. Key findings included: males and subadults were more prone to elk-vehicle collisions; collisions occur more commonly in the fall season; all healthy elk are susceptible to vehicle collisions; the magnitude of elk collision was negatively correlated to traffic volumes, because abundance of elk greatly decreased during the study period; and elk abundance was the primary driver influencing occurrence of collisions over time. Collectively, these results will help inform the design of mitigation measures targeting the most vulnerable demographics of a population, i.e. subadults and male elk in the fall.

Objective. To update findings from previous Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ)- and American Urological Association (AUA) funded reviews evaluating therapies for clinically localized prostate cancer (CLPC). Sources. Bibliographic databases (2013–January 2020); ClinicalTrials.gov; systematic reviews Methods. Controlled studies of CLPC treatments with duration ≥5 years for mortality and metastases and ≥1 year for quality of life and harms. One investigator rated risk of bias (RoB), extracted data, and assessed certainty of evidence; a second checked accuracy. We analyzed English-language studies with low or medium RoB. We incorporated findings from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) identified in the prior reviews if new RCTs provided information on the same intervention comparison. Results. We identified 67 eligible references; 17 were unique RCTs. Among clinically rather than prostate specific antigen (PSA) detected CLPC, Watchful Waiting (WW) may increase mortality and metastases versus Radical Prostatectomy (RP) at 20+ years. Urinary and erectile dysfunction were lower with WW versus RP. WW’s effect on mortality may vary by tumor risk and age but not by race, health status, comorbidities, or PSA. Active Monitoring (AM) probably results in little to no difference in mortality in PSA detected CLPC versus RP or external beam radiation (EBR) plus Androgen Deprivation (AD) regardless of tumor risk. Metastases were slightly higher with AM. Harms were greater with RP than AM and mixed between EBR plus AD versus AM. 3D-conformal EBR and AD plus low-dose-rate brachytherapy (BT) provided a small reduction in all-cause mortality versus three dimensional conformal EBR and AD but little to no difference on metastases. EBR plus AD versus EBR alone may result in a small reduction in mortality and metastases in higher risk disease but may increase sexual harms. EBR plus neoadjuvant AD versus EBR plus concurrent AD may result in little to no difference in mortality and genitourinary toxicity. Conventionally fractionated EBR versus ultrahypofractionated EBR may result in little to no difference in mortality and metastases and urinary and bowel toxicity. Active Surveillance may result in fewer harms than photodynamic therapy and laparoscopic RP may result in more harms than robotic-assisted RP. Little information exists on other treatments. No studies assessed provider or hospital factors of RP comparative effectiveness. Conclusions. RP reduces mortality versus WW in clinically detected CLPC but causes more harms. Effectiveness may be limited to younger men or to those with intermediate risk disease and requires many years to occur. AM results in little to no mortality difference versus RP or EBR plus AD. EBR plus AD reduces mortality versus EBR alone in higher risk CLPC but may worsen sexual function. Adding low-dose-rate BT to 3D-conformal EBR and AD may reduce mortality in higher risk CLPC. RCTs in PSA-detected and MRI staged CLPC are needed.

Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) developed the Elk and Vegetation Management Plan (EVMP) to address well-documented declines in the ecological condition of aspen stands and riparian communities from high levels of elk herbivory. The EVMP aims to reduce the impacts of elk on vegetation and restore the natural range of variability in the elk population and affected plant communities, including preventing the loss of aspen clones within high elk-use areas, restoring montane riparian willow cover and height within suitable habitat, and reducing of levels of elk grazing on herbaceous vegetation. The EVMP described a range of management actions including reductions in the size of the elk herd and the installation of fencing to reduce herbivory levels and facilitate recovery in degraded communities. The EVMP established a monitoring protocol in focal communities to assess progress towards these vegetation goals and facilitate adaptive management. RMNP has collected data quantifying biomass offtake in upland herbaceous and riparian communities, willow height and cover, and aspen stand structure and regeneration periodically since implementation of the plan began in 2008. This report summarizes the results of analyses of EVMP data collected from 2008–2018, the last year comprehensive measurements were made. The EVMP was developed with a focus on the primary elk winter range in the upper montane zone on the east side of RMNP. The plan distinguishes core elk winter range, where elk concentrate during winter, and noncore winter range areas that typically have less elk use. Data were also collected in the Kawuneeche Valley in the headwaters of the Colorado River on the west side of the park, an area supporting extensive wet meadows and areas once dominated by willow. Data were also collected to investigate the effects of wildland fires that burned through the winter range in 2012 to determine the potential for using fire as a management tool to achieve EVMP goals. The overwintering elk population in the park has declined, from its peak of 1,500 animals in 2001, and over the course of EVMP implementation, from 614 animals in 2009 to 124 animals in 2019. Declines in the overwintering elk population may be best explained by increased cow elk harvest outside of the park, and, most notably, by a change in seasonal migration patterns and habitat use that have elk moving to lower elevation wintering areas following the fall rut. In sites in aspen communities, stand structure was changed little or declined across sampling periods in unfenced plots with continued patterns of little regeneration and recruitment and steady progression toward stands dominated by large-diameter trees. However, there was a progression towards taller sapling heights inside fenced plots and recruitment of small diameter tree-sized stems. Fencing had large and positive effects on aspen stand structure, with different patterns observed in fenced and unfenced core winter range and noncore winter range. Increased recruitment was observed across the winter range but occurred mainly inside fenced plots. Aspen stem counts varied between time periods and in relation to wildfire, with fenced and burned plots on the core winter range having higher stem counts by 2018 than unfenced and unburned plots. Willow height and cover increased over time in sampled sites, but positive trends were generally restricted to sites in fenced areas. Willow height also increased on noncore (all unfenced) winter range sites. Willow in unfenced core winter range sites had only minor increase in height from baseline (2008 for most sites) to 2018, but willow in fenced plots had greater height increases over the same time period. Noncore winter range willow sites had modest height increases over the 10-yr period. Mean willow cover increased nearly 5-fold compared to baseline conditions within the core winter range fenced areas and roughly 1.5-fold in noncore winter range. Willow cover was greater in unfenced than fenced plots at baseline, but the pattern was reversed in 2013 and 2018. The highest cover occurred in 2018 in fenced core winter range plots (mean = 70.8%) and unfenced noncore winter range plots (mean = 68.6%). Mean cover increased from 14.6% at baseline to 25.3% in 2013 and 70.8% in 2018 in fenced core winter range plots. Mean willow cover changed little in unfenced core winter range plots between baseline and 2018, although the range of cover values increased over time, and willow cover increases were modest in the noncore winter range. Fencing reduced or eliminated browsing from plots located inside fences, but offtake varied widely among unfenced plots. Patterns of willow browse intensity differed management subgroups (e.g., core and noncore winter range), and generally showed a downward trend between baseline and 2018 measurements. Herbaceous offtake in upland communities was measured in the first sample period (baseline–2013) to assess levels of grazing on herbaceous vegetation, however it was determined that the associated EVMP objectives had been achieved so measurements were discontinued after 2013. Continued monitoring of upland shrubs indicated no shift from herbaceous dominated to shrub dominated communities after 2013. Noncore upland plots had higher shrub cover than core winter range plots across all time periods, but most differences between year and core/noncore had low probability of effect. Cover for individual species varied over time and winter range plots. Moose presence has increased in winter range aspen and willow sites over the past decade, while beaver presence at our monitoring sites has decreased. Results indicate that RMNP is making progress toward the vegetation objectives set out in the EVMP, however positive trends were most pronounced in plots protected from ungulate herbivory through fencing. Aspen recruitment was greatest in fenced plots. Likewise, trajectories of willow height and cover were positive in fenced winter range plots. Results demonstrate that fencing is an effective means of improving condition in aspen and willow habitats. Changes outside the fences were slower and less pronounced than inside the fences, however, the positive (if small) increases in willow height and cover and aspen regeneration as well as decreases in upland herbaceous offtake, indicate that decreased wintering elk populations are also contributing to improvement of habitat conditions on the elk winter range. In the Kawuneeche Valley, which has not traditionally been heavily used by overwintering elk but does experience summer elk and moose use, poor and declining habitat condition were recorded in unfenced willow and aspen sites.
