Abstract This article offers a broad-ranging comparison of practical philosophy in the West and in China with a view to enabling not only better mutual understanding between the two sides but also better self-understanding on each side. Contrary to widespread Western conceptions that Chinese practical philosophy may have contributed some important principles in first-order morality but has contributed little in the area of meta-ethics as compared to the West, it is argued here that Chinese practical philosophy did indeed make important contributions in first-order morality, but that in addition it is generally superior to Western practical philosophy in the area of meta-ethics. There are, however, certain exceptions to this rule on both sides. In the end, therefore, a comparison of the two traditions can contribute not only to a better mutual understanding, but also to a better self-understanding and improvement on each side.

Giant Panda National Park is crucial for China’s ecological security strategic pattern known as "two screens and three belts." The importance assessment and classification of ecosystem services in giant panda national parks has an important guiding role in the protection of giant panda national park ecosystems. In this study, we examined four indicators of habitat quality: carbon storage, water conservation, and soil and water conservation. Combined with data analysis were used to evaluate and classify the importance of ecosystem services in the study area. The results showed that: (1) the overall habitat quality index in the study area was relatively high, and the index was generally greater than 0.5. The total carbon storage was 60.5 × 106 t, and the highest carbon storage in the region was 16.9533 t. The area with the highest water conservation reached 715.275 mm. The total soil conservation was 2555.7 × 107 t. (2) From the perspective of spatial characteristics, the habitat quality in the study area presented a spatial distribution pattern of high–low from west to east. The carbon storage presented a spatial distribution pattern of high–low from east to west. The soil conservation presented a spatial pattern of decreasing from west to east, and the water conservation increased from west to east. (3) We divided the research into four levels of importance: The area of general importance in the study site accounted for 1017.58 km2 and was distributed in the northwest of the study site. The moderately important areas were distributed in the east of the study site, with an area of 1142.40 km2. The highly important areas were distributed in the west of the study site, totaling 2647.84 km2. Extremely important areas were distributed in the middle, with an area of 1451.32 km2. (4) The grid cell scale of the study area was used as the dataset to determine the weighting. This makes the weighting more objective and ensures that the spatial distribution of areas with different degrees of importance will be more accurate.

The Chibougamau area, occupying the northeastern part of the Abitibi greenstone belt is a large synclinorium of volcanic and sedimentary rocks enclosed within tonalitic gneisses. Several east–west–trending regional folds within this synclinorium are responsible for the vertical attitude of the strata. Synclinal structures, with youngest sediments within the core, possess axial-plane schistosity. Anticlines, on the other hand, either form domes with a core occupied by earlier tonalitic to dioritic plutons or are transected by a series of east–west-trending ductile faults (the Waconichi tectonic zone).An early deformation phase of low intensity (D1) generated broad, north–south folds without schistosity. The subsequent regional deformation, event D2, produced the large east–west folds. These deformations, in combination, produced the regional interference pattern of domes and basins. North–south horizontal shortening generated an east–west-trending schistosity associated with a vertical stretching lineation. Regional deformation at its climax produced a tightening of folds and rotation of fold axes parallel to the stretching lineation.Plutons deflected the regional east–west schistosity and formed concentric trajectories associated with "contact-strain aureoles." This produced small interaction zones or triple points characterized by strong vertical extension. These relations suggest an interference between a regional stress field, which produced north–south horizontal shortening, and local stress fields, controlled or deflected by granitoid plutons acting as competent bodies.East–west-trending ductile shear zones represent the final stage of the regional deformation. The observed northward and southward reverse movement along these east–west faults, their parallelism to the axial trace of folds, and the regional schistosity are probable evidence of a regime dominated by a coaxial strain.

Ice flow direction indicators in north-west County Meath and adjacent parts of Westmeath and Cavan are described. Drumlins. striae, roche moulonnees. and oilier streamlined features, as well as till fabrics, suggest a general How during glacial maximum of north-west to south-east when combined with erratic carriage data. Analysis of the configuration of ice marginal moraines and subglacially deposited esker ridges deposited during glacial retreat, as well as till fabric analysis of deglacial sediments, suggest a more complicated retreat of ice, with margins oriented south-wesI to north-east prevailing in the south and cast of the study area. Further to the west and south-west there seems to be an element of retreat towards the west, with a north-south trending ice margin. This is suggested as providing evidence for a decoupling of the ice into separate lobes in that area.

There are different characteristics distinguishing a region from the others, thereby, leading to the diversities in the regional potentials and problems as well as the strategic regional development policies to be implemented. The East-West Corridor is one of the eleven provincial strategic economic areas in West Sumatra. It covers nine regencies or cities and 65 sub-districts with different characteristics and typologies and this leads to diversity in the strategies to develop this area. This study aims to determine the diversity associated with the characteristics and typologies of the strategic area of the East-West Corridor. This involved using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) analysis technique, spatial clustering analysis, and overlay analysis. Moreover, the regional characteristics and typologies were grouped based on 17 observational variables used in producing four main components including trade and tourism services, agriculture, livestock/fishery, and tourism. The results of spatial clustering analysis produced 3 clusters which are the urban, desa-kota, and rural areas while the overlay analysis produced ten regional characteristics and typologies used as the basis to make strategies and policies for each region’s development and to increase investment opportunities in the strategic area of West-East Corridor and the Province of West Sumatra in general.

ABSTRACT Slum areas are always a concern because of the quality of the environment that is not healthy. The method used is descriptive analysis and quantitative analysis. The results of this research are the existing conditions of slum areas in Boepinang Bajo Barat and Bajo Timur, namely: (1) the area of the slum area reaches 10.32 hectares with (a) the area of the West Bajo slum area is 4 Ha; (b) the area of the slum area of East Bajo is 6.32 Ha. Slum areas in Boepinang (East Bajo) and West Boepinang (West Bajo) Villages are included in priority scale one (1). Need attention in settlement management.Keywords ; West Bajo, East Bajo, Slum, SettlementsABSTRAK Permukiman kumuh selalu menjadi perhatian karena dari segi kualitas lingkungan yang tidak sehat. Tujuan dari penelitian ini yaitu untuk mengetahui kondisi eksisting Kawasan Kumuh Boepinang Kumuh Bajo Barat dan Bajo Timur dan untuk mengidentifikasi klasifikasi tingkat kekumuhan di Kawasan Kumuh Boepinang Kumuh Bajo Barat dan Bajo Timur. Metode yang digunakan yaitu analisis deskriptif dan analisis kuantitatif. Hasil penelitian ini yaitu Kondisi eksisting Kawasan kumuh di Boepinang Bajo Barat dan Bajo Timur sebagao berikut : (1) luas kawasan kumuh mencapai 10,32 Ha dengan (a) luas Kawasan kumuh Bajo Barat 4 Ha; (b) luas Kawasan kumuh Bajo Timur 6,32 Ha. The pre Maestrichtian geologic-tectonic pattern of cockle of the East Balkan Peninsula Area wasn’t built on the Europe Continental Massif. The modern East Balkan Peninsula Relief is forming during the Late Quaternary time. The East Balkan Peninsula Margin coincides with the border between the Bulgarian and Moesian Continental Microplates from the west and the Black Sea Oceanic Microplatte to the east. This border present the Neo Europe West Passive Continental Margin in the area of the last Tethys Oceanic Fragment – it Black Sea Oceanic Gulf.

AbstractBlackburnia gastrellariformis sp. n., is described from East Molokai, Hawaii. Based on cladistic parsimony analysis of adult characters, the species is hypothesized to be most closely related to B. komohana Liebherr & Zimmerman of West Maui, with these two species comprising the adelphotaxon to the East Maui species pair, B. haleakala Liebherr & Zimmerman + B. putealis (Blackburn). Previous reconciled tree analysis for the Hawaiian Blackburnia radiation conducted before discovery of B. gastrellariformis found a general pattern in which Molokai and West Maui were hypothesized as sister-areas to the exclusion of the East Maui volcano, Haleakala, though the less common, incongruent area relationship of (Molokai (West Maui + East Maui) was also represented in the taxon-area cladogram. In the present reconciled tree analysis, the closest hypothesized relationship of B. gastrellariformis and a West Maui species corroborates the more common pattern by replacing items of error in the previous analysis with the newly discovered species. Elevational habitat shifts are invoked to explain the occurrence of numerous sister-species pairs in Molokai and West Maui, currently separated by the Pailolo Channel, relative to species occupying Haleakala.

The West-East corridor is one of the main gateways to enter West Sumatra Province. The West-East corridor, which passes through 65 districts, has a variety of potentials and problems. This means, the growth rate of each district will be different. The growth rate and strength of the relationship among regions can be observed through the gravity model's spatial interactions. The gravity model can calculate the relative strength of the relationship between regions. To see the strength of the relationship among regions in the West-East corridor, strategic economic areas were taken into considerations based on their distance and several observational variables, which were the total population variable, infrastructure completeness, level of security, and investment value. Observation analysis units consisted of sixty-five sub-districts along the West-East corridor. Mass 1 (M1) was the central government, West Padang district, and mass 2 (M2) was the other 64 sub-districts. The analysis results show that the total population, infrastructure completeness, level of security, and investment value are not only influenced by their closeness to the government/city center. The infrastructure completeness factor can influence the total population in a region. Likewise, the investment value can be influenced by the infrastructure completeness and the level of security in a region.JEL Classification: O10; R12; R19

AbstractAimRecent studies have shown a correlation between environmental pollutants and increased risk of selected congenital malformations. The South-East area of the Island of Malta is much more industrialised than the more rural North-West area. The aim of this study was to test the null hypothesis that there are no regional differences in Malta in the prevalence at birth of congenital cardiac malformations. Methods: Live born infants with congenital cardiac malformations born between 1990 and 1994 were allocated to 10 areas, and thence to 2 regions of 5 areas each, so as to constitute North-West and South-East Malta. Official publications gave population totals and growth rates. Those infants with congenital cardiac malformations were then compared between the different regions using χ2and the Mann-Whitney U test.ResultsThe overall prevalence of congenital heart disease at birth was 8.8/1000 live births. The birth prevalence for the South-East region (10.1/1000 LB – 95% CI 8.4–12.3/1000 live births) was significantly higher than for the North-West (7.4/1000 live births – 95% CI 6.0–9.0/1000 live births) – p=0.03, Odds ratio 1.38 (95% CI 1.05–2.61). The Mann-Whitney U test showed a significant difference in the distribution amongst the 10 defined areas (p=0.016). The Central-East area had the highest prevalence of cardiac malformations in the entire Island – p=0.02, Odds ratio 1.70 (95% CI 1.10–2.61). Demography showed an efflux of individuals from the South-East of Malta.ConclusionThe higher prevalence of congenital heart disease noted at birth in South-East Malta is unlikely to be due to genetic factors, as these would have migrated North-West along with the population movement. An environmental factor, therefore, seems more likely to be responsible for the increased predisposition to congenital heart disease in the South-East of Malta.

Soviet Evangelical high school students have experienced a slow and difficult transition to the American classroom. The students were often negatively characterized by their ESL teachers and other school personnel as "difficult" due to their classroom behaviors. Many times, these behaviors did not meet the ESL teacher's expectations, resulting in a culture clash between the teacher and the Soviet Evangelical students. The study found that Soviet Evangelical high school students came to the United States with high expectations of a new life, but little knowledge of the U.S. or the American classroom. Feelings of loneliness, homesickness and frustration quickly set in upon encountering the new language, new school routines and rules and regulations, some of which made no sense to the students. The educational and cultural values that form the Soviet Evangelical students' orientation toward learning and the classroom were found to play a strong role in the transition process and also helped to account for the behaviors ESL educators found so difficult to deal with. These factors. combined with the students' strong in-group identity as Soviet Evangelicals. all contributed to their slow and difficult transition to the American classroom. The study concludes with recommendations for ESL educators and other school personnel focusing on easing the transition for Soviet Evangelical students. Teaching new students the skills and background knowledge necessary for interacting in an American classroom is stressed, along with using the students' church as a resource in order to foster a trusting relationship with both students and their parents.

The prominent division in early America between the established eastern populations and communities in the West is evident when viewed through the lens of eighteenth-century Philadelphia newspapers, which themselves employed an East-West paradigm to interpret four events: the Paxton Boys Incident, Regulator Rebellion, Shays's Rebellion, and Constitutional Convention. Through the choices of what words to use to describe these clashes, through oversights, omissions, and misrepresentations, and sometimes through more direct tactics, Philadelphia newspapermen revealed a persistent cultural bias against and rivalry with western communities. This study illustrates how pervasive this contrast between East and West was in the minds of easterners; how central a feature of early American culture they considered it to be.

A growing recognition of the need for effective marine environmental management as a result of the increasing exploitation of marine biological resources has highlighted the need for high speed ecological seabed mapping. The practice of mapping making extensive use of satellite remote sensing and airborne platforms is well established for terrestrial management. Marine biological resource mapping however is not readily available except in part from that derived for surface waters from satellite based ocean colour mapping. Perhaps the most fundamental reason is that of sampling difficulty, which involves broad areas of seabed coverage, irregularities of seabed surface and depth. Conventional grab sample techniques are widely accepted as a standard seabed mapping methodology that has been in use long before the advent of acoustic techniques and continue to be employed. However. they are both slow and labour intensive, factors which severely limit the spatial coverage available from practical grab sampling programs. While acoustic techniques have been used for some time in pelagic biomass assessment, only recently have acoustic techniques been applied to marine biological resource mapping of benthic communities. Two commercial bottom classifiers available in the market that use normal incidence echosounders are the RoxAnn and QTC View systems. Users and practitioners should be cautious however when using black box implementations of the two commercial systems without a proper quality control over raw acoustic data since some researchers in their studies have indicated problems with these two bottom classifiers such as, among others, a depth dependence. In this thesis, an alternative approach was adopted to the use of echosounder returns for bottom classification.The approach used in this study is similar to,~ used in the commercial RoxAnn system. In grouping bottom types however, Multivariate analysis (Principal Component Analysis and Cluster Analysis) was adopted instead of the allocation system normally used in the RoxAnn system, called RoxAnn squares. In addition, the adopted approach allowed for quality control over acoustic data before further analysis was undertaken. As a working hypothesis, it was assumed that on average 0 and aE2 = 0 where E1 and E2 are the roughness and hardness indices, respectively, and RO is the depth. For roughness index (E1), this was achieved by introducing a constant angular integration interval to the tail of the first OM returns whereas for hardness index (E2), this was achieved by introducing a constant depth integration interval. Since three different frequencies, i.e. 12, 38 and kHz, were operated, Principal Component Analysis was used here to reduce the dimensionality of roughness and hardness indices, formed from the three operated qu frequencies separately. The k-means technique was applied to the first principal component of roughness index and the first principal comp component of hardness index to produce separable seabed types. This produced four separable seabed types, namely soft-smooth, soft-rough, hard-smooth and hard-rough seabeds.Principal Component Analysis was also used to reduce the dimensionality of the area backscattering coefficient sA, a relative measure of biomass of benthic mobile biota. The bottom classification results reported here appear to be robust in that, where independent ground truthing was available, acoustic classification was generally congruent with ground truth results. When investigating the relationship between derived bottom type and acoustically assessed total biomass of benthic mobile biota, no trend linking the two parameters, however, appears. Nevertheless, using the hierarchical agglomerative technique applied to a set of variables containing average first principal component of the area backscattering coefficient sA, the average first principal component of roughness and hardness indices, the centroids of first principal component of roughness and hardness indices associated with the four seabed types and species composition of fish group of the common species in trawl stations available, two main groups of quasi acoustic population are observed in the North West Shelf (NWS) study area and three groups are observed in the South East Fisheries (SEF) study area. The two main groups of quasi acoustic population in the NWS study area and the three main groups of quasi acoustic population in the study area are associated with the derived seabed types and fish groups of the common species.

Esta dissertação investiga a reversão do viés Orientalista na graphic novel autobiográfica Persépolis, de Marjane Satrapi. A história de Persépolis, dividida em duas partes, retrata a vida de Marji desde seus 10 anos de idade, em 1979, durante a Revolução Islâmica, até seus 24 anos. Esta pesquisa busca, mais especificamente, analisar como a construção identitária da personagem principal do texto, a própria Marji, reverte o olhar ocidental sobre ela. Em cada lugar em que ela se encontra, seja na Áustria ou no Irã, ela precisa lidar com diferentes características e especificidades de sua própria identidade a fim de reverter o olhar Orientalista. As estratégias utilizadas por Marji variam de acordo com sua localização. Em algumas situações, a reversão é construída se apropriando do discurso ocidental. Em outras, individualização e/ou heterogeneidade são as responsáveis por essa reversão. O uso de generalizações também funciona para descreditar o olhar Orientalista. Além disso, algumas características da graphic novel como mídia e do gênero autobiográfico também colaboram para tal reversão.

Abstract : This thesis investigates the Orientalist gaze reversal in the autobiographical graphic novel Persepolis, written by Marjane Satrapi. The story of Persepolis, divided in two parts, depicts Marji's life since she is 10 years old, in 1979, during the Islamic Revolution, until she is 24 years old. My study is concerned, more specifically, with how the identity construction of the main character in the text, which is Marji herself, works on the reversal of the Western gaze upon her. In each location Marji finds herself, be it in Austria or in Iran, she has to deal with different characteristics and specificities of her own identity in order to reverse the Orientalist gaze. The strategies used by Marji are different according to her location. In some situations, the reversion is constructed by using the Western discourse against the Western institutions or people themselves. In others, individualization and/or heterogeneity are responsible for this reversal. The use of generalizations also works on debunking the Orientalist gaze. Furthermore, some features of the graphic novel medium and the autobiographical genre also collaborate for the gaze reversal.

AbstractThe 70th year of the IAU has been marked not only by the Covid-19 pandemic but by the geopolitical tension between the United States and China. After almost four decades of cooperation, which began in shared opposition to Soviet Russia and a shared interest in China’s modernisation, the leaders of each country have become strident critics of the other. The escalating war of words has led to disruptions in trade, communications and visas and now threatens the vast and fruitful cooperation between universities and researchers. Much is at stake. Many US universities are in China, such as Stanford with its state-of-the-art centre at Peking University and NYU with a branch campus in Shanghai. Chinese universities benefit from visits in both directions, from bench-marking using American partner templates and from the return of US-trained doctoral graduates. US-China links in science are focused on crucial areas like biomedicine and epidemiology, planetary science and ecology, engineering, materials, energy, cybernetics.

AbstractThe Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), while primarily a security organisation, has always included economic and human baskets or dimensions. Currently, the Office of the Co-ordinator of OSCE Economic and Environmental Activities operates in four main areas: (1) good governance and anti-corruption, (2) money laundering and financing of terrorism, (3) transport, trade and border-crossing facilitation, and (4) labour migration. This chapter addresses developments in Central Asia since the dissolution of the Soviet Union that are relevant to the third area of OSCE operations. The chapter’s focus is on the potential for the landlocked Central Asian countries to become land-linked, using improved transport connections between East Asia and Europe to promote economic development through export diversification and growth. Rail services across Central Asia improved considerably during the 2010s. They have been resilient, despite strained political relations between Russia and the EU since 2014, and rail traffic between Europe and China continued to increase in 2020 despite the shock of COVID-19. Further infrastructure improvements are promised under China’s Belt and Road Initiative. However, the expanded network has been little used by Central Asian producers to create new international trade, and the improved infrastructure represents a potential opportunity rather than a past benefit. If the Central Asian economies are successful in taking advantage of the opportunity, it will stimulate their trade across the Eurasian region and help economic diversification. The main determinant of success will be national policies and national economic development. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the role of multilateral institutions and, in particular, the prospects for OSCE collaboration with existing fora to promote cooperation and economic development in Central Asia.

In this chapter, the author explores the relevant brain networks and their plasticity in response to mindfulness and compassion training. The chapter begins by reviewing how foundational mindfulness practices, in the form of focused attention and open monitoring, set the stage for compassion/loving-kindness training by modulating attentional resources (in the attention networks), regulating emotion processing and control (in the limbic system), and altering self-referential processing (in the default mode network). The author then reviews the unique effects of compassion/loving-kindness training on different brain areas that result in increased receptivity to others’ emotions, enhanced positive affect and reward processing, and increased motivation for prosocial connection. The author shows that “compassion fatigue” is a misnomer because the neural mechanisms underlying empathic distress and compassion are distinct, with empathic distress activating the brain network involved in pain processing and compassion activating the pleasure and reward system. The author concludes that compassion is both innate and a trainable skill, exerting its effects through neuroplasticity.

Tambora gas field, discovered in 1974 is located in a swamp area at the apex of Mahakam Delta, and it is adjacent to Nilam field, which is operated by another operator. Geologically, the Tambora and Nilam Fields have the same anticline structure that originates from the sediment provenance west of Kalimantan as reflected in present day Mahakam Delta. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the challenges to unlock the potential of the west flank area of Tambora Fields. The geological synthesis of both Tambora and Nilam fields shows similar net sand and pay distribution in lateral and vertical proportions. Most developments in the Tambora Anticline area are in the crest and the distances between wells are ~100-200m. Challenges to unlock potential in flank areas are derived from the limitation of wells and seismic data. Based on data and knowledge of the flank areas in both fields, the west flank has better productivity compared to the east. Therefore, geological synthesis is conducted in the west flank area to define hydrocarbon and reservoir properties. Furthermore, channel models were made from 2D seismic scouring, controlled by the continuation of well log channel facies in the anticline crest area. Based on the preliminary approach, 3 wells were proposed to unlock west flank Tambora potential and were integrated into the plan of development. Primarily, dynamic uncertainty affects the potential of the west flank since production in the anticline crest area is enormous, and the uncertainty was analyzed by drilling one recent well. The result shows that hydrocarbon in the flank is not fully connected with the anticline crest area and has proven the sidebar heterogeneity concept. These gave more confidence to seek further positive results and develop west flank Tambora to sustain Mahakam production in the future.

Exploration is being carried out intensively in eastern Indonesia, including the Timor Island area. Timor Island is located in an area near several commercial hydrocarbon accumulations in the Australian continental margin, such as the Kakatua oil field, the Bayu Undan gas and condensate field in the Timor Gap, and the Abadi gas field in the Aru Sea. These discoveries have encouraged exploration efforts on the Timor Island. Several new wells have recently been drilled in Timor Leste, which lies in the north east section of Timor Island. This research is conducted to determine the potential of source rock and correlate oil to source rock in the West Timor area, especially the north east part. An oil seepage was found in Wemasa Beach, Kobalima Sub-District, Malaka,East Nusa Tenggara.. This seepage is proof that the petroleum system in this area is working. Biomarker analysis on the oil sample was carried out using Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry. Ten outcrop samples from six formations were collected and analyzed the Total Organic Carbon, vitrinite reflectance, and kerogen type. Seven of ten rock samples were also extracted and analyzed using GCMS to determine the biomarker composition. From the analysis of the samples, the TOC value is between 0.46-0.96 wt% which categorized as poor to fair organic carbon, while a sample determined as Kapan papery black shale (C8-02A-03) has an excellent TOC of 43.7 wt%. The samples maturity is in the range of peak to late mature based on vitrinite reflectance analysis (0.70–1.30 % Ro). From Thermal Alteration Scale, the the Kapan Shale is immature as it is the Mid-Pliocene Noele. Based on kerogen typing analysis, gas-prone kerogen (Type III) and inert kerogen (Type IV) are dominated by 9 samples. The Kapan Shale is dominated by amorphous fluorescence (76%) and characterized as Type I/II kerogen. From the biomarker fingerprinting, the Wemasa oil seep is more likely a Late Triassic-Early Jurassic Aitutu.

The seismoacoustical investigations was made in the western part of the Kerch strait (Azov sea) near Kamysh-Burun spit. The fracture zone with dislocated sedimentary rocks layers and buried erosional surface was revealed to the west of spit. Three seismofacial units was revealed to the east of spit. The first unit was modern sedimentary cover. The second ones has cross-bedding features and was, probably, the part of early generation of Kamysh-Burun spit, which lied to the east of its modern position. The lower border of the second unit is the erosional surface supposed of phanagorian age. The third unit is screened by acoustic shedows in large part.
