Globalisation and increasing digitisation mean that companies must increasingly orientate themselves internationally in order to become (more) competitive or to remain competitive. Promoting e-working can revitalise rural development. The issue involved is always interaction between people from different cultures, between people who, according to their cultural backgrounds, feel, think and act differently. When cultural diversity and differences are taken into account, greater creativity, more diverse ideas and faster problem solving are achieved. The cultural dimensions, according to Geert Hofstede, offer a comprehensive model for capturing the various expressions of intercultural values. This paper examines the motives for applying e-working in selected European countries in 2018 according to Hofstede’s six dimensions of national culture. Twenty-eight countries from the Eurostat database were analysed (Finland and the Netherlands were excluded, and software detected them in the e-working variable as outliers). Correlation with e-working is statistically significant at PDI (power distance index - negative: the lower the PDI index, the higher the proportion of e-working) and IVR index (indulgence versus restraint - positive: the higher the IVR index, the higher the proportion of e-working).

The PISA tests are considered as a quality measurement for education. If it is so, then their high results might influence the proportion between blue and white collars. As the intellectually demanding functions can be more easily executed over the internet, in a long term, this fact should be reflected in a growing proportion of e-working. To study this assumption, we examine adopting e-working within selected thirty-five countries. Research questions were formed as follows: Is there a demonstrable influence of favorable PISA results on the overall rates of e-working in certain states? Is it possible to sustain different components with e-working? Can appropriate e-working legislation contribute to the overall rates of e-working at a state’s level? Our study adopted Spearman’s Rho correlation using 4 numerical variables to measure the strength of association between pairs of variables – the proportion of e-working and four country’s PISA averages in Mathematics, Science, Reading and Financial Literacy. Its results indicate a positive correlation: the probability of e-working increases with the PISA results growth. Further, Qualitative Content Analysis was used. Based on our data e-working will not go away and it is time to update law on e-working. Governments should formalize rights and duties. Face-to-display work is likely to be an unstoppable evolution at workplace. These components affected higher e-workability. These results draw attention to how e-working is becoming major element in common life with some challenges and difficulties and that we need to study these two influencer factors in order to optimize its arrangements. As a theoretical contribution to the body of knowledge, e-working is conceptualised in and by this study to be both a way of being a worker and the way, or mechanism, for carrying out the work task. It is a conceptualisation which responds to the indeterminacy, dynamism and unfolding nature of e-working in the contemporary context. This study takes a local government focus, using a single case study. The chosen case is a local authority which perceives itself as an 'exemplar' with regard to operational practice despite, at the point of examination, having only recently acknowledged the need to make active use of e-working practices; practices which are common elsewhere. This study provides empirical, theoretical and methodological contributions. Theoretical contribution is primarily offered through a new and more effective conceptualisation of e-working. This conceptualisation, derived from an analysis of the existing literature, is used to investigate the experience of e-working change in a local authority context during a period of significant e-working change (Research Objective 1), resulting in the theorising of the implications of e-working change for managing and working in contemporary local authority organisations (Research Objective 2). Subsequent to this, reflections on use of the processual approach are also provided. In using the empirical data to build a rounded picture of the e-working change experience, and by endeavouring to use a 'pure' plurivocal approach, this study establishes what the participants perceive as causing their operational environment to be changed through the increasing use of e-working; their perception of the nature of e-working change; and what influences their experience of the e-working change process. Through the adoption of a processual approach to understanding organisational change allied to a plurivocal stance (reflection on endeavouring to apply a 'pure' plurivocal approach and explanation as to why researchers may be tending to use alternative or variant methodologies being presented as a methodological contribution) this study provides a better understanding of e-working change in organisations as a process: one that acknowledges its indeterminacy, dynamism and unfolding nature. The study identifies the key points of the e-working change experience relate to the work location; working agenda; living with the unknown; resourcing of change; culture and the issue of trust; and the communicative approach. Amongst the theorised findings is identification of the need to manage perceptions of vulnerability, especially in the light of cost saving intentions, as well as the need to question the applicability and influence of an historical approach. With communication reasoned to reflect honesty within the organisation, the requirement to clarify expectations and make effort to understand and respond to reluctant engagement, as well as responding to (e-)socialisation requirements, are identified.

The present study was performed to validate a spatial working memory task using pharmacological manipulations. The water escape T-maze, which combines the advantages of the Morris water maze and the T-maze while minimizes the disadvantages, was used. Scopolamine, a drug that affects cognitive function in spatial working memory tasks, significantly decreased the rat performance in the present delayed alternation task. Since glutamate neurotransmission plays an important role in the maintaining of working memory, we evaluated the effect of ionotropic and metabotropic glutamatergic receptors antagonists, administered alone or in combination, on rat behaviour. As the acquisition and performance of memory tasks has been linked to the expression of the immediately early gene cFos, a marker of neuronal activation, we also investigated the neurochemical correlates of the water escape T-maze after pharmacological treatment with glutamatergic antagonists, in various brain areas. Moreover, we focused our attention on the involvement of perirhinal cortex glutamatergic neurotransmission in the acquisition and/or consolidation of this particular task. The perirhinal cortex has strong and reciprocal connections with both specific cortical sensory areas and some memory-related structures, including the hippocampal formation and amygdala. For its peculiar position, perirhinal cortex has been recently regarded as a key region in working memory processes, in particular in providing temporary maintenance of information. The effect of perirhinal cortex lesions with ibotenic acid on the acquisition and consolidation of the water escape T-maze task was evaluated. In conclusion, our data suggest that the water escape T-maze could be considered a valid, simple and quite fast method to assess spatial working memory, sensible to pharmacological manipulations. Following execution of the task, we observed cFos expression in several brain regions. Furthermore, in accordance to literature, our results suggest that glutamatergic neurotransmission plays an important role in the acquisition and consolidation of working memory processes.

The purpose of this thesis is to identify and examine the main concern amongst e-learning providers tasked with e-learning activities (design, delivery, implementation, etc) in East Africa, including Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda. In this study the Classic Grounded Theory research methodology was used in order to identify the main concern of e-learning providers in these countries. In the course of repeated encounters with e-learning providers, this study found the concept of ""Cultivating Recognition"" to emerge as the main concern or core variable amongst these e-learning providers. The core variable within the Classic Grounded Theory research method is the main entity that accounts for most of the variation in the data. . The e-learning providers were shown to be continually striving to resolve the issue of how to cultivate recognition from those who sponsor and monitor the projects with which they are tasked. Without proper recognition from their various stakeholders, the e-learning providers were unable to successfully deliver e-learning programs to the targeted learners. The research discovered that there were two key sub-core variables that enabled the ""Cultivation of Recognition"": ""Legitimizing"" and ""Credentializing"". The process of ""Legitimizing"" involves convincing the e-learning stakeholders that the e-learning programs and projects will be delivered in a timely, valid and sustainable manner. ""Credentializing"" aims to enhance the stakeholders' belief in the e-learning provider's competence prior to the start of the e-learning project, given that sponsors and stakeholders would be unwilling to commission a project if they believe an e-learning professional's ability to deliver in terms of both financial and operational quality parameters is in question. In addition to the findings, two main implications emerged from the research. Firstly, for those working within the context of e-learning delivery within East African countries, it is not sufficient for e-learning providers simply to possess or demonstrate a high level of technical competence. They need also to be trained and mentored in how to cultivate the recognition of potential stakeholders before they canvas for e-learning projects. Secondly the possibility exists for career academics in any discipline to enhance their own research funding prospects by mastering the process of Cultivating Recognition.

Abstract: This research sought to understand the specificity of the place that immigrant labor Dekassegui occupies in Japan class society. Dekassegui phenomenon is characterized by the bureaucratization of the migration and selective migration resulting from Japanese ancestry. This peculiarity is reflected in reasonable conditions of subsistence, however, this peculiarity does not deprive them of into informal jobs and labor insertion in unskilled immigrant niches. Meanwhile, since the 1990s, the labor relationships and conditions of the Japanese working class tend to expansion of informality, increased turnover, lower wages, part time job, and other employment conditions not very evident over the past few decades. A field research was carried out with dekasseguis returned after 2008 economic crisis to better understand the impact of the crisis in their lives. Through these considerations, some questions that guide this dissertation are: the relationship between Dekassegui and the Japanese working class, ethnic difference as a differentiating factor and social class as an element that resembles

Working remotely away from the traditional office is a continuously growing trend. Due to advancements in technology, workers can conduct their work remotely through the use of electronic technologies. While there are benefits for both the companies and workers due to this change in working arrangements, some negative effects have also occurred. Previous studies on remote working have found positive effects such as increased productivity or higher levels of job satisfaction. Whereas, other studies have found negative aspects such as overworking, hard time to switch off after work and social isolation. Previous research has focused on examining telecommuters (employees who work from home part-time). Hence there is a research gap for studying employees who work solely from home. Also, most of the previous studies have focused on samples where all the respondents have the same profession/work-role, rather than contrasting between different ones. Moreover, previous studies stress the need for further investigation on the impact that remote work has on well-being. Since previous research is mostly quantitative, there is a need for more in-depth understanding of the effects of remote working. Given the identified research gaps, our purpose in this thesis is to compare remote workers to workplace bound workers in terms of productivity and well-being. In order to help fill the research gaps and reach the purpose of this study we formulated the research question: How do remote workers and workplace bound workers compare in terms of productivity and well-being? In order to answer the research question and achieve the purpose of this thesis, we conducted a qualitative study. The data was gathered through six semi-structured interviews with workers who have previously worked in the traditional office and are currently working solely remotely in the same job position. Mainly, our research found that the remote and office setting were quite balanced in terms of well-being and productivity in our sample. However, the remote setting proved to have more challenges related to it than the office setting in our case, such as higher levels of work intensification, social isolation and management style. No significant difference was identified in terms of how work-role affects remote work in terms of productivity and well-being, however, the personal characteristics of the respondents seemed to play a part in the results. Our study contributes to the growing literature on remote working by offering insights on both the challenges and positive aspects of working solely remotely from home within different work-roles and organizations. Moreover, we offer some managerial implications on how to mitigate the challenges connected to remote working. Lastly, we offer some recommendations for future research in the context of remote working.

Oct. 07 2019 – Oct. 10, 2019 Kiel (Germany) – Kiel (Germany) MNF-Pher-110The main purpose of the ALKOR cruise AL529 was the training of students in observational techniques applied by physical oceanographers. The students who participated in the trip attend the module "Measurement Methods of Oceanography" which is offered in the Bachelor program "Physics of the Earth System" at CAU Kiel. During the AL529 the students were instructed in instrument calibration and in the interpretation of measurement data at sea. In addition, the students had the opportunity to learn about working and living at sea and to explore and study the impact of physical processes in the western Baltic Sea, the sea at their doorstep. The observations show a quasi-synoptic picture of the hydrography and currents in the western Baltic Sea. Twice-repeated hydrographic and current sections across the Fehmarn Belt show well the short time scales where significant changes occur. A zonal section along the deepest topography, from about 10°40'E to 014°21'E, shows very nicely the two-layer system of outflowing low salinity and inflowing North Sea water. A bottom shield anchorage shows the currents in the water column and the near-bottom temperature and salinity variations in the Fehmarnbelt area.

Plans are underway to create an acousto-optic laboratory on the campus of the Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory. For this purpose, existing space in the basement of the Main Laboratory will be renovated. Demanding measurement techniques, such as interferometry, require a sufficiently quiet vibration environment (i.e., low vibration levels). As such, characterization of existing vibration conditions is necessary to determine vibration isolation requirements so that highly sensitive measurement activities are feasible. To this end, existing vibro-acoustic conditions were briefly surveyed in Room 47, a part of the future laboratory. The survey measured ambient noise and ambient vertical floor vibrations. The ambient vibration environment was characterized according to generic velocity criteria (VC), which are one-third octave band vibration limits. At the time of the survey, the ambient vibration environment fell under a VC-A designation, where the tolerance limit is 2000 μin/s across all one-third octave bands. Under this condition, highly sensitive measurement activities are feasible on a vibration-isolated working surface. The conclusion of this report provides isolation efficiency requirements that satisfy VC-E limits (125 μin/s), which are necessary for interferometric measurements.

Annotation:
The internet and digital technologies are upending global trade. Industries and supply chains are being transformed, and the movement of data across borders is now central to the operation of the global economy. Provisions in trade agreements address many aspects of the digital economy – from cross-border data flows, to the protection of citizens’ personal data, and the regulation of the internet and new technologies like artificial intelligence and algorithmic decision-making. The UK government has identified digital trade as a priority in its Global Britain strategy and one of the main sources of economic growth to recover from the pandemic. It wants the UK to play a leading role in setting the international standards and regulations that govern the global digital economy. The regulation of digital trade is a fast-evolving and contentious issue, and the US, European Union (EU), and China have adopted different approaches. Now that the UK has left the EU, it will need to navigate across multiple and often conflicting digital realms. The UK needs to decide which policy objectives it will prioritise, how to regulate the digital economy domestically, and how best to achieve its priorities when negotiating international trade agreements. There is an urgent need to develop a robust, evidence-based approach to the UK’s digital trade strategy that takes into account the perspectives of businesses, workers, and citizens, as well as the approaches of other countries in the global economy. This working paper aims to inform UK policy debates by assessing the state of play in digital trade globally. The authors present a detailed analysis of five policy areas that are central to discussions on digital trade for the UK: cross-border data flows and privacy; internet access and content regulation; intellectual property and innovation; e-commerce (including trade facilitation and consumer protection); and taxation (customs duties on e-commerce and digital services taxes). In each of these areas the authors compare and contrast the approaches taken by the US, EU and China, discuss the public policy implications, and examine the choices facing the UK.
