During 1970-74, radio transmitters were attached to five adult and four juvenile dingoes trapped on the escarpment 50 km east ofArmidale, N.S.W. These animals were radio-tracked for a total of 515 (10-83) days, and 4058 fixes (6-1248 per animal) were obtained. Some of the animals were tracked almost continuously for periods of 100 h. The dingoes exhibited two types of movement: one, dubbed searching movement, appeared to be associated with hunting; the other, dubbed exploratory movement, was used when shifting the hunting locality and in traverses of the home range. These traverses are postulated to be related to maintaining communication between animals. The dingoes were active throughout the day with peaks of activity at dawn and dusk. The distances travelled per hour in the diurnal and nocturnal periods were equal. Activity periods were short (65% <1 hour) and interspersed with shorter rest periods. During the radio-tracking period, the average home range of adults was 2700 ha. There was evidence that this size of range did not increase over periods longer than the radio-tracking. The implications of this for control programs are discussed.

Introduction:Over the last two decades, Frequency Modulation (FM) radio has been established as the only form of sound broadcasting in Ghana. Radio is the most accessible of mass media. There are more than 40 operational radio stations in the Ashanti region of Ghana. Most stations are commercial, broadcasting in the local language (Asante-Twi). Many urban radio health slots discuss various diseases and their treatments mainly for the benefit of patients. Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) practitioners who are able to pay for airtime dominate as ‘experts’ in most of these shows.Methods:We identified an IEC gap regarding policies governing healthcare delivery, healthcare financing, training, ethics and research, and environmental issues. In June 2015, orthodox medical practitioners collaborated with a private, local, English-speaking radio station to produce and host a weekly health show whose content was aimed at holistically discussing health from the viewpoint of practitioners, clients, policy makers, administrators, and financiers in a simplified language for the general public, including healthcare trainees.Discussion:The show dubbed “Staying Alive” first aired on Tuesday, July 7, 2015, at 20:00 GMT and continues to air to date, appealing to a wide range of active listeners. “Staying Alive” to the best of our knowledge remains the only show with a holistic approach to health. Over the last 23 months, we have experienced challenges in sustaining sponsorship to fund the cost of production and airtime for the show, and the cost of effectively assessing the public health impact of the show. Orthodox medical practitioners can employ mass radio as an effective tool for advocacy, information dissemination, and education of clients or health trainees in low or middle-income urban settings through effective collaboration with media stations.

ABSTRACT The wealth of detections of millisecond pulsars (MSPs) in γ-rays by Fermi has spurred searches for these objects among the several unidentified γ-ray sources. Interesting targets are a sub-class of binary MSPs, dubbed ‘black widows’ (BWs) and ‘redbacks’ (RBs), which are in orbit with low-mass non-degenerate companions fully or partially ablated by irradiation from the MSP wind. These systems can be easily missed in radio pulsar surveys owing to the eclipse of the radio signal by the intra-binary plasma from the ablated companion star photosphere, making them better targets for multiwavelength observations. We used optical and X-ray data from public data bases to carry out a systematic investigation of all the unidentified γ-ray sources from the Fermi Large Area Telescope Third Source Catalog, which have been pre-selected as likely MSP candidates according to a machine-learning technique analysis. We tested our procedure by recovering known binary BW/RB identifications and searched for new ones, finding two possible candidates. At the same time, we investigated previously proposed BW/RB identifications and we ruled out one of them based upon the updated γ-ray source coordinates.

ABSTRACT We propose a new approach within the versatile framework of convex optimization to solve the radio-interferometric wideband imaging problem. Our approach, dubbed HyperSARA, leverages low rankness, and joint average sparsity priors to enable formation of high-resolution and high-dynamic range image cubes from visibility data. The resulting minimization problem is solved using a primal-dual algorithm. The algorithmic structure is shipped with highly interesting functionalities such as preconditioning for accelerated convergence, and parallelization enabling to spread the computational cost and memory requirements across a multitude of processing nodes with limited resources. In this work, we provide a proof of concept for wideband image reconstruction of megabyte-size images. The better performance of HyperSARA, in terms of resolution and dynamic range of the formed images, compared to single channel imaging and the clean-based wideband imaging algorithm in the wsclean software, is showcased on simulations and Very Large Array observations. Our matlab code is available online on github.

When, back in 1971, the originalTheatre Quarterlydevoted one of its earliest issues (TQ6, 1972) to television drama, the strongest reactions were to remarks by Tony Garnett concerning the recently developed form already being dubbed documentary drama. Subsequent issues featured both an attack on the form from Paul Ableman, and a vigorous defence from its leading practitioner, Jeremy Sandford, author of the seminalCathy Come Home(1966). As this article bears witness, the debate still rages, and here its leading historian, Derek Paget – author ofTrue Stories: Documentary Drama on Radio, Stage, and Television(Manchester University Press, 1990) – explores some of the ways in which myth has contributed as much as analysis to the argument. He goes back to contemporary documentation to explore the nature of the BBC's own sometimes timorous attitude to the creature it had spawned, its context within the developing aesthetics and technology of television drama, the reactions of politicians and local government agencies – and the way in which repeat transmissions were (and were not) hedged about with paranoia.

ABSTRACT We develop a novel algorithm for sparse imaging of Stokes parameters in radio interferometry under the polarization constraint. The latter is a physical non-linear relation between the Stokes parameters, imposing the polarization intensity as a lower bound on the total intensity. To solve the joint inverse Stokes imaging problem including this bound, we leverage epigraphical projection techniques in convex optimization and we design a primal–dual method offering a highly flexible and parallelizable structure. In addition, we propose to regularize each Stokes parameter map through an average sparsity prior in the context of a reweighted analysis approach (SARA). The resulting method is dubbed Polarized SARA. Using simulated observations of M87 with the Event Horizon Telescope, we demonstrate that imposing the polarization constraint leads to superior image quality. For the considered data sets, the results also indicate better performance of the average sparsity prior in comparison with the widely used Cotton–Schwab clean algorithm and other total variation based priors for polarimetric imaging. We recently discovered that the luminous radio-quiet quasi-stellar objects (QSO) LBQS 0302–0019 at z = 3.286 is likely accompanied by an obscured AGN at 20 kpc projected distance, which we dubbed Jil. It represents the tightest candidate system of an obscured and unobscured dual AGN at z > 3. To verify the dual AGN scenario, we obtained deep Ks band (rest-frame V band) imaging with the VLT/HAWK-I+GRAAL instrument at 0.″4 resolution during science verification in January 2018. We detect the individual host galaxies of the QSO and Jil with estimated stellar masses of log(M⋆/M⊙) = 11.4 ± 0.5 and log(M⋆/M⊙) = 0.9 ± 0.5, respectively. Near-IR spectra obtained with Very Large Telescope-K-band Multi Object Spectrograph (VLT-KMOS) reveal a clear [O III] λ5007 line detection at the location of Jil that does not contribute significantly to the Ks band flux. Both observations therefore corroborate the dual AGN scenario. A comparison to Illustris simulations suggests a parent halo mass of log(Mhalo/M⊙) = 13.2 ± 0.5 for this interacting galaxy system, corresponding to a massive dark matter halo at that epoch.

Genom viktoptimering kan hållfastheten i konstruktionen bibehållas samt till och med även ökas. Slutligen kan företaget tillämpa det färdigställda konceptet till produktion. Vid applicering av viktoptimerade ventillyftare kan även förbränningsmotorns verkningsgrad gynnas. Läsaren ska efter studien kunna erhålla en fördjupad kunskap kring förbränningsmotorer, optimering av konstruktion samt verkningsgrad.

This chapter focuses on Richard Durham's budding career as a scriptwriter for radio, including his role as the primary writer of Democracy USA episodes. Durham's scripts dramatized the triumphs and struggles of Negro leaders. He soon started sharing scriptwriting duties with freelance writer Perry Wolf. The synergy between these writers and the hard work of the show's multiracial cast and production staff eventually paid off. During this time, Durham had a rarefied place in radio, since only a tiny cadre of African Americans, including Robert Lucas, Roi Ottley, and occasionally Langston Hughes, wrote for the medium. While Durham searched for ways to increase his income, he met Irna Phillips, dubbed the “Queen of the Soaps.” He also created, together with his theatrical friends, a soap opera called Here Comes Tomorrow, first aired by Chicago station WJJD on September 8, 1947. This was followed by Destination Freedom.

Os discursos sobre a crise do jornalismo não datam de ontem, nem irromperam na era digital. Não deixa de ser significativo que a crítica acima reproduzida tenha sido formulada há mais de 130 anos pelo jornalista e romancista Emile Zola, que viria a assinar “J’accuse” (L’Aurore, 13 de janeiro de 1898), um dos mais célebres textos da história do periodismo. Nos finais do séc. XIX e inícios do séc. XX, a imprensa escrita francesa vai de vento em popa, contabilizando cerca de 600 diários, dos quais nove dezenas sediados em Paris (Kalifa, 2011). Já há algumas décadas que o jornalismo se tornara um negócio lucrativo. Artigos de opinião e debates de cariz político cedem progressivamente lugar a conteúdos suscetíveis de atraírem um maior número de leitores, incluindo os menos escolarizados, potenciando um aumento de receitas publicitárias. Por seu turno, nos Estados Unidos, o periodismo de informação impusera-se como paradigma dominante a partir dos anos 1880-1910, através da dissociação entre os factos e a interpretação dos mesmos (Brin et al., 2004). De um lado, uma ética da objetividade, consolidada por meio de géneros como a entrevista e a reportagem. Do outro, a busca do lucro por intermédio de virulentas controvérsias, alimentadas por “um fluxo vertiginoso de informação superabundante”, segundo a expressão de Zola. Entre muitas outras mudanças, o último século foi marcado por dois conflitos mundiais, a segmentação do globo em campos ideológicos e reconfigurações identitárias, o recurso à propaganda e à desinformação em doses massivas, a transformação dos media (jornal, radio, cinema, televisão, internet) em indústrias culturais intrinsecamente vinculadas à cultura de massas ou ainda a afirmação de uma “mitologia da felicidade individual” (Morin, 1962), num mundo cada vez mais desinstitucionalizado e dessocializado (Dubet & Martuccelli, 1998). Desde então, a produção académica tem vindo a debruçar-se – a partir de abordagens concetuais diferenciadas – sobre a influência dos discursos mediáticos na “construção social da realidade” (Berger & Luckmann, 1966) ou na consolidação dos “imaginários” (Castoriadis, 1975), no âmbito das esferas pública e privada, mas também sobre os contextos socioculturais em que esses mesmos discursos emergem (Hall, 1973; Goffman, 1974) e os eventuais efeitos suscitados junto de audiências e/ou públicos mais ou menos (in)conscientes e (in)ativos (Lazarsfeld & Katz, 1955; Klapper, 1960; Adorno, 1963; Morley, 1980). Como aconteceu com os seus predecessores, o recurso cada vez mais generalizado a um novo media – a partir da última década do século XX – deu origem a um conjunto de profecias apocalíticas e outras tantas utopias comunicacionais. Destarte, coloca-se a seguinte questão: “de que modo a Internet afeta o jeito de nos relacionarmos uns com os outros, de debatermos, trabalharmos, nos movermos, nos cultivarmos, sermos militantes, consumirmos, cuidarmos de nós, nos divertirmos, etc.?” (Beuscart et al, 2019: 8). As mudanças experienciadas nos derradeiros vinte anos replicam alguns dos desafios que, invariavelmente, caraterizaram os tempos áureos da imprensa, do cinema, da rádio e da televisão – embora hoje com uma intensidade inédita –, não deixando ainda de suscitar novos questionamentos. Em virtude da eclosão de um singular ecossistema mediático, o modelo tradicional de produção, difusão e receção do jornalismo impresso tem vindo a experimentar um complexo processo de reconfiguração de contornos ainda imprecisos, do ponto de vista profissional, sociopolítico, cultural, económico, técnico, ético e jurídico. Da reflexão sobre estas temáticas, levada a cabo no Centro de Estudos Filosófico-Humanísticos (UCP) e junto dos estudantes de Licenciatura em Ciências da Comunicação e do Mestrado em Comunicação Digital, nasceu o congresso internacional Repensar a imprensa no ecossistema digital, que teve lugar na Faculdade de Filosofia e Ciências Sociais (UCP), em Braga, de 3 a 5 de Julho de 2019, com a participação de meia centena de académicos oriundos da Europa, América e Ásia. O título inspira-se do relatório Presse et numérique. L’invention d’un nouvel ecosystème, encomendado pelo Ministério francês da Cultura e da Comunicação ao investigador Jean-Marie Charon. A noção de ecossistema aponta para uma configuração de cariz horizontal, para um sistema de atores – plurais na sua história e organização, nos conteúdos das suas atividades e da sua produção – e a sua relação (in)direta com o(s) público(s). Alude ainda à complexidade das interações em jogo, num contexto tantas vezes de competição, outras de solidariedade, e de tempos e espaços colaborativos. Há muito que um tal ecossistema deixou de ser de âmbito meramente nacional, fomentando desafios de natureza transnacional, transdisciplinar e transmediática (Charon, 2015).

What now might now be dubbed “cultural sustainability” has long been part and parcel of university life throughout Latin America where such institutions have been pivotal in preserving and shaping peripheral or threatened musical traditions. This chapter describes the work of a Peruvian organization called the Centro de Capacitación Campesino (Center for Peasant Training), which was instrumental in the musical life of rural-indigenous communities around the Andean city of Ayacucho in two distinct moments: first in the 1980s when the CCC was founded at Ayacucho's national university amid the Shining Path's war against the Peruvian state; the second moment came after 2000 when community-based Radio Quispillaccta made old CCC recordings the centerpiece of its broadcasts and a symbol of indigenous ecological rationality.

Leopold “wildlifer” Dan Thompson and his research partner were driving south on US Highway 51 on Thursday, April 22, 1948. “When the news of Aldo Leopold’s death came over the radio, we gasped and blankly looked at each other. I turned off the radio, and we drove on for another thirty minutes of silence.” Dan’s thoughts drifted back to the howl of a single wolf he had heard the evening before. He wondered “if the wolf had sensed the passing of a kindred spirit of the wilderness.” Aldo Leopold turned the American Dream upside down. He was born in a mansion and died at a shack; yet the Shack was the home of his greatest riches. Some have dubbed it the most famous chicken coop in the world. Upon his retirement, Aldo had planned to build a year- round home on the property, but instead the Shack was passed on as it was to new generations far beyond his family. Leopold’s book about the Shack and other adventures, “Great Possessions,” was in jeopardy after his death of ever getting published. But comments on the essays were called in from key students, friends, and family members, Luna served as the editor for his father’s writings, and the book was released by Oxford University Press under the title A Sand County Almanac and Sketches from Here and There (1949). In it, Aldo Leopold invited his readers to sit with him on his bench at the Shack, watch as he cut wood, walk with him in the woods and prairies, and loiter at his campfires to think about the question: How can we live on the land without spoiling it? And now even broader: How can we live as part of the earth, and its systems, without spoiling it? The urgency of his questions has only heightened since his death. Leopold anticipated our crises and left us the practical and philosophical wisdom to set our compasses and choose paths toward healthier vistas. Leopold reminded us in all his ecological work, “Pluck a petal from a pasque flower, and you disturb a star.”

Abstract In this paper we present some new analytical techniques which have been recently developed to solve for problems of circular elastic inhomogeneities in anti-plane and plane elasticity. The inhomogeneities may be composed of different materials and have different radii. The matrix may be subjected to arbitrary loadings or singularities. The solution to this heterogeneous problem is sought as a transformation performed on the solution of the corresponding homogeneous problem, i.e., the problem when all the inhomogeneities are removed and the homogeneous matrix is subjected to the same loading/singularities, a procedure which has been dubbed ‘heterogenization’. In previous works, a single inhomogeneity or hole has been considered and the transformation has been shown to be purely algebraic in the antiplane case and involves differentiation of the Kolosov-Mushkelishvili complex potentials in the plane case. Universal formulas, i.e., formulas which are independent of the loading/singularities, that express the stresses at the inter-face of the inhomogeneity in terms of the stresses that would have existed at the same interface had the inhomogeneity been absent, have been be derived. The solution for a single inhomogeneity bonded to a matrix which is subjected to arbitrary loading/singularities can then in principle be used systematically in a Schwarz alternating method to obtain the solution for multiple inhomogeneities to any degree of accuracy. However alternative and innovative methods have been sought which lead to a much faster convergence and in some cases to exact expressions in terms of infinite series. The aim of this paper is to present some of the progress that has been made in this direction.
