ObjectiveTo estimate the economic burden of diseases and deaths attributable to bidi smoking in India for persons aged 30–69 years.MethodsThe National Sample Survey data on healthcare expenditures, data on bidi smoking prevalence from the Global Adult Tobacco Survey and relative risks of all-cause mortality from bidi smoking are used to estimate the economic burden of diseases and deaths attributable to bidi smoking in India using a prevalence-based attributable-risk approach. Costs are estimated under the following heads: (1) direct medical expenditure of treating diseases; (2) indirect morbidity costs and (3) indirect mortality costs of premature deaths.FindingsThe total economic costs attributable to bidi smoking from all diseases and deaths in India in the year 2017 for persons aged 30–69 years amount to INR805.5 billion (US$12.4 billion), of which 20.9% is direct and 79.1% is indirect cost. Men bear 93.7% of the total costs.ConclusionThe total annual economic costs of bidi smoking amount to approximately 0.5% of India’s gross domestic product, while the excise tax revenue from bidi is only half a per cent of its economic costs. The direct medical costs of bidi smoking amount to 2.24% of total health expenditure. Since the poor bear a disproportionately large share of the economic costs of bidi smoking, the unregulated use of bidi would potentially push more households in India, which incur heavy out-of-pocket expenditures on healthcare, into poverty.

Domestic work has evolved and adapted in the global South in distinctive racialized and gendered forms as a result of neoliberal economic restructuring. With the case of Uganda, this article applies a transnational intersectionality framework to neoliberal economic restructuring to identify how domestic worker regimes are produced. A transnational intersectionality approach spotlights the translocation of diverse Ugandan domestic workers embedded within the structural forces of economic organization, reproductive labor, state policies, and geography. Drawing from extensive fieldwork from three regions of Uganda, the study’s two main findings document: (1) the production of an intersectional racialized domestic worker regime as a consequence of the Ugandan aid state; and (2) the production of an intersectional gendered domestic worker regime supported by the weakening and underfunding of social development policies in the Ugandan national budget. These regimes show how race, gender, and regional demarcations of domestic work intersect in distinct forms connected to restructuring. A transnational intersectionality approach exposes the diversity of patterns in reproductive labor in Uganda.

The theory used in this study uses the concept of patron-client (Scott, 1985) and patriarchy (Delaney, 2005) to explain the two forms of the employment relationship in the domestic sphere. This research used post-positivist paradigm with mixed methods, quantitative and qualitative (Guba & Lincoln, 1997). In contrast, domestic worker prefer to work part-time, work-specific and do not live in private homes because more wages and freely in the work. Employers and domestic workers have individual rationality in determining the form of employment relationship. In fact, kinship relationships wane and increasing the quantity of formal relations, characterized by the use of part-time domestic worker are increasingly numerous. This thesis examines ways in which domestic workers in South Africa could be included within the scope of existing industrial legislation. At present the legal position of a work force of 862 000 is regulated by the common law contract of service. Socio-economic factors form the background of this investigation, which first sets out to determine whether the common-law contract of employment is capable of equitably regulating the employment relationship. The fallacy of the assumption that individuals agree on the terms of exchange in the employment contract on the basis of juridical equality, and the tenuous nature of the common-law employment relationship in the case of domestic workers are revealed. In the absence of any current statutory minima the employment contract is used to deprive domestic workers of what little protection they enjoy at common law. The two ways in which the individual employee's conditions of service can be protected from terms favouring the stronger of the two contracting parties are discussed. These are collective bargaining and statutory regulation. Difficulties experienced by domestic workers in respect of collective bargaining, whether they be included under the Labour Relations Act or not, are indicated. Proposals for including domestic workers under the Basic Conditions of Employment Act are evaluated in the light of legislation in the United States of America, Zimbabwe, Swaziland and Namibia. Ways of minimum-wage fixing are investigated, and it is concluded that the provisions of the Wage Act could be adapted for domestic workers. The 'unfair labour practice'concept is examined and the implications of its application for the domestic labour sector evaluated. It is recommended that the concept 'fairness' in the Labour Relations Act should apply to domestic workers, but that a code of practice be drafted to provide conceptions of 'fairness' as guidelines for employment behaviour. It is suggested that the parties refer disputes to mediation before being granted access to a Small Labour Court established for this purpose. In conclusion a draft code of practice is presented, as a basis for negotiation at a forum representative of the major actors in the domestic labour arena.

Events in the last few years on the global stage have heralded a new era for domestic workers, which may afford them the voice as subaltern that has been silent until now. Despite being constructed as silent and as subjects without agency, unionised domestic workers organised themselves globally, becoming more visible and making their voices heard. This culminated in the promulgation of the International Labour Organisation's (ILO) Convention No.189 on Decent Work for Domestic Workers (or C189) in September 2013, and the establishment of the International Domestic Workers' Federation (IDWF) in October 2013. This broadening of the scope of domestic workers' activism has not yet received sufficient attention in academic research. These two historic events on their own have the potential to change the dominant discourse around domestic workers, by mobilising workers with agency to challenge the meaning of the political ideologies informing their identity positions of exploitation and subjugation.

This dissertation is to discuss proposed domestic work in Brazil, focusing on domestic worker. Initially approached about patriarchy in Brazil and its influence on sedimentation of current social relationships, focusing on labor relations. And then considered the issue of intersectionality between race and gender, and the consequences resulting therefrom. Finally, studied deeply upon the domestic work in Brazil, showing its historical basis, the regulatory development, rights under Brazilian law, the prejudice and discrimination that still affects the domestic workers. This research revealed that despite all the advances in the field of domestic work in the country, domestic workers are still victims of prejudice and discrimination, resulting in the need to implement actions to change that situation, which in fact proves to be harmful to all.

Aim: Violence does not stop with age. There are many studies on the topic of domestic violence but few focus on the elderly and the role of the social worker in dealing with this issue. The purpose of this study is to analyse and describe how social workers in the field of gerontological social work are actively identifying cases of domestic abuse involving the elderly. Method: This study has a qualitative approach and the data has been gathered through ten semi structured interviews with social workers. The gathered material has been analysed through content analysis. Results: The result of the study highlights various means of identifying abuse such as asking direct questions about violence, asking for assistance by managers and other professionals, adapting the conversation with the client to the given situation, being watchful of physical or abstract signs of violence. In spite of these strategies, the analysis shows that organisational deficiencies puts a large responsibility burden on the individual social worker. Lack of adequate training and standardised questions leads to the social worker having to gather information themselves in order to perform their duties. Keywords: Social worker, elderlies, domestic violence, need assessment

For centuries, indigenous women have been forced to labor in slave-like conditions as domestic workers in Lima, Peru. With neoliberal practices on the rise, Peru's domestic labor informal economic sector struggles with sociopolitical representation. The downtrodden women of the household work economy exemplify the national perception of desconfianza, or distrust, as it trickles down from the wealthier individuals to those living in poverty. Although the nature of domestic work is a product of hegemonic colonial relations and, recently, violent social movements in the late 20th century, increasing attempts for government transparency and nongovernmental involvement, have created a slowly recovering broken social system. In this thesis, I ascertain that the identity of trabajadoras, or female workers, is primarily driven by their agency as they struggle to become upwardly mobile.

Domestic violence against children is well known on the social problem aspect, and Sweden has become the first country clarifying its stance on physical punishment and child abuse since established “anti-spanking” law in 1979. The purpose of this research was to investigate how Swedish social workers deal with the issue about domestic violence against children. The research was developed with hermeneutics approach and ecological systems theory, and carried out by four respondents from Social Services Gävle. With the answers claimed by the respondents, constitute the results and conclusions, that is all kinds of tackling methods about child abuse should be regulated by laws, and cooperate with police or citizens comprehensively, especially in the period of investigation. This paper might be a general pattern, but we do hope it could make people rethinking about child abuse issues, that probably may reduce a little bit pressure to children in the future.

The Hudson Bay Railway (HBR) is a 510 mile railway completed in 1929 in northern Manitoba, Canada. It connects domestic locations in North America with international destinations through the Port of Churchill. Permafrost was encountered during construction at milepost 136 in isolated peat bogs which continued in a gradual northward transition from discontinuous to continuous permafrost. Over the past 80 years, warming climate combined with poor engineering properties of the railway embankment material has resulted in further thawing of the discontinuous permafrost leading to differential settlement along the rail embankment and high annual maintenance costs. In a bid to understand the geothermal regime of the embankment, underlying subsurface condition, and to seek for solutions to stabilize the embankment, extensive work has been done from 1977 to the present time. This paper seeks to review reports of the past projects and compare the results against current conditions at selected test locations.

The work accidents and occupational diseases are very important especially in the industrializing countries. According to the International Labour Organization (ILO) every 15 seconds, a worker dies from a work-related accident or disease. Every 15 seconds, 160 workers have a work-related accident. Every day, 6.300 people die as a result of occupational accidents or work-related diseases–more than 2,3 million deaths per year. The economic burden of poor occupational safety and health practices is estimated at 4 per cent of global Gross Domestic Product each year. In Turkey, work accidents’ figures are very high but occupational diseases’ figures are not very high. There are several causes of this condition. In Turkey, the Work Accidents, Occupational Diseases and Maternity Act No. 4772 was accepted in 1947. The Social Security and General Health Insurance Act No.5510 was accepted in 2006. There are regulations about the work accident and occupational disease insurance in the Act. According to the Act, insured and the rights holders can obtain some assistance.

Some studies point to the importance of work as a means of social integration. In this sense, the knowledge generated by ergonomics about human factors and activities in productive public and domestic spaces have contributed to this integration. The social relations of work and productivity are mediated by worker welfare, which also involves the use of clothing with attributes that contribute to comfort and risk reduction. In this context the role of the designer is to design clothing equipped with these attributes. Therefore, the following objectives were set: To evaluate the application of project Guidelines in work clothing design and relate their use to the perception of comfort by female employees of the UFPE-CAA administrative sector. The methodological procedures were based on the "Guidelines for the design of clothing for use while performing tasks," in Alves, Martins and Martins (2013). These guidelines had a significant effect on the work-clothing project. It considered the nature of the tasks, the needs and preferences of workers. The perception test during use revealed a prevalence of physical comfort over discomfort in general.

The GasPacífico Project involved the construction of 543 kilometres of NPS 20 and NPS 24 high pressure gas pipeline to connect the natural gas reserves in the Province of Neuquen, Argentina to the industrial and domestic demand in and near the city of Concepción, Chile. The pipeline crossed the Pampas of Argentina, the imposing Andes mountain range, the Coastal mountain range and the highly populated agricultural terrain of the Central Valley (740 individual landowners in total) leading to the west coast of Chile. TransCanada International Ltd. was responsible for the overall project management of the GasPacifico Project which included design, construction and contract administration. In March 1998, the Project Team began the procedure to pre-qualify bidders, to prepare contract documents and to call for bids in preparation for the selection of construction contractors for the project. Contracts were awarded on July 30, 1998. The proper selection of the Contractors was considered of paramount importance in the project because of the high degree of difficulty of the project, the budget constraints, and the very limited time available for construction. The details of the process established for the selection of the Contractors for the GasPacífico Project as presented in this paper include: • the criteria for the pre-qualification of the bidders; • the technical evaluation format; • the commercial evaluation format; • sensitivity studies for unit rate items and extra work; • the application of the technical/commercial evaluations to the final selection.

Micro, small and medium enterprises play a major role in the country's economic growth and development. The connection and correlation of GDP and the number of small and medium-sized companies represents a key not only economic but also social role of EU countries. This paper seeks to explore small and medium enterprises as an important role in economic growth and development. Micro, small and medium enterprises play a very important role in the economic development of the country, which is the reason for many studies and analyzes. In addition to contributing to gross domestic product creation, they also play a key social role as they reduce unemployment. The aim of this paper is to assess the relationship between the components of gross domestic product (GDP) and the development of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the EU-28 in the years 2009-2019. To achieve this goal, we reviewed the literature, presented statistical data that confirm the importance of these companies in economic development, such as: indicator of entrepreneurship (calculated as the number of SME companies per 1000 inhabitants), participation of SMEs in creating added value. We have presented this data for selected EU countries. Material and methods of work will be performed statistical analysis of data collected for SMEs in the EU and thus enable verification of the hypothesis set in the paper. Secondary data downloaded from the Eurostat site will be used. Based on the downloaded data and the application of a simple regression model, a universal and original model will be presented. Before presenting the model, a correlation will be made in order to present the comprehensiveness of the model. The model will be presented in the form of a function, which will have the value of parameters on the basis of which the influence of independent variables on dependent ones will be determined. The results and conclusions are presented at the end of the paper. The results of the research confirm the theoretical significance and role of small and medium enterprises, as well as the need for their internalization and growth into global market leaders. If the unemployment rate increases by 1 unit (if one person loses his job) in the EU, it will cause a decrease in total domestic value (GDP) by 0.509 units. Every new unemployed worker will cost the EU so much unproduced output and new added value. Assuming that there is no unemployment in the EU, ie that the rate is equal to 0, the EU would produce a gross domestic value of 16,135 euros (note: only the impact and the relationship between the unemployment rate and GDP is taken into account here). Thus, it is clear how much costs and effects unemployment has on the gross domestic product and economic policy of EU countries.

Abstract Pertamina is the only one state oil enterprise in the country has a strategic position in the national development, mainly in terms of foreign exchange and domestic energy supply. Hence human factor in the company productivity is very important. Workday loss by sickness in the last 4 years was 2.00 %o up to 3.00 %o and 0.88 days up to 1.12 days loss per worker annually Workday loss by sickness was 96.86 %up to 98.12 %> of total workday loss and the rest by work injuries. These relative low sickness absence figures achieved by multidisciplinary efforts in the company mainly by health department. All sickness absence certificate even for one day off should be signed by company medical doctor. Health department conduct comprehensive health care including occupational health programme. Health & safety issues solved by multidisiplinary approach. Beside health department also organize employee assistance programme (counseling) mainly for healthy life style and psychosocial problems. The low workday loss is one of the basic important factors to support discipline and human productivity mainly since mostly oil reserve discoveries located in the remote areas inland as well as offshore.

Prednosti se očekuju u području očuvanja zdravlja i sigurnosti, smanjenja opasnih poslova u nezdravim uvjetima, povećanom dostupu informacijama, boljoj organizacija rada, poboljšanju u području poljoprivrede, obrazovanja,… Abstract: We are faced with the fact that new technologies are evolving extremely fast and affecting human lives in both business and private life. New inventions and innovations are presented almost every week. With the adequate application of artificial intelligence and robotics, the world can become a better place to live. However, history has shown that new technologies provide not only benefits and new opportunities, but also new costs and threats. The paper will present individual influences on changes in human action and behaviour in the near and distant future. Advantages are expected in the field of health and safety, reduction of dangerous jobs in unhealthy conditions, increased access to information, better organization of work, improvement in agriculture, education … On the other hand, a reduction in the number of jobs is expected, a greater need for highly specialized professionals, increasing technological complexity, …. Also, many futurists and scientists show concern about the development of superintelligence, which could replace the human race. Recently, there have been attempts to raise awareness of potential abuses of artificial intelligence and robotics, and there has been a need for laws, recommendations, guidelines to guide the development of robotics. The paper will list the more important advantages and disadvantages of robotics and artificial intelligence in certain areas of human activity, as well as the predictions of some eminent foreign and domestic scientists and futurists.

This paper presents a study on the ultrasonic emissions of some ultrasonic washing machines for both industrial and domestic use, which are now increasingly widespread, and their evaluation in compliance with current regulations. Since no threshold values or exposure limits for ultrasound are defined in the Italian and European legislation, criteria that are valid in other European and non-European countries among the most stringent have been adopted for the evaluation. For the evaluation, a methodology has been developed in the context of the collaboration between Eni - CNR. As a case study, an analysis of various ultrasonic washers machines of different sizes and power will be presented.MethodIn this study, 6 ultrasonic cleaner machines of different models and brands were examined. For each of them, it was measured the equivalent sound level not weighted in the ultrasonic bands and the peak level, Lpeak, at the receiver, close the operator at the ears height, generally in front of the device standing at 0.5 m from it. The instrumentation used for the measurements includes a 204 kHz acquisition card, and a class I microphone with a band up to 70 kHz, all certified as a class I sound level meter. Results and discussionFor each ultrasonic cleaner, the ultrasonic level was measured for each 1/3 octave band from 20 kHz to 80 kHz. The uncertainty level was 2.8 dB for the equivalent level and 2.4 dB for the peak level. The presence of the lid, depending on the model, performs several main functions: quickly raise the temperature inside the tank, prevent the lowering of the solution due to evaporation, and protect from any splashes during operation. Some models, even if was covered by the lids, exceeded the exposure limits established by us for the evaluation, and will be described in the paper. It should be noted that the peak level, Lpeak, was never exceeded. The evaluation criterion we have chosen is one of the most restrictive criteria, chosen to safeguard the worker as much as possible. Although the criterion is stringent, it is possible to find simple and economical solutions to be implemented in case of exceeding the limit.ConclusionThe study has shown that most of the devices if the tank is shielded, with a screen or simply the lid, they fall into the class of absence of risk. Otherwise, it is possible to reduce the exposure time or increase the distance spent near the washing machine to reduce the risk.

Annotation:
Women migrant domestic workers (WMDWs) constitute 7.7 percent of migrant workers worldwide, of whom more than a quarter live and work in the Arab region. In Lebanon, as in other Arab countries, WMDWs are recruited through the sponsorship system, Kafala. Under this system, a potential migrant worker can only obtain legal residency and a work permit in the country of destination if she is sponsored by a specific employer. Once in the destination country, the worker cannot transfer to a new employer unless granted permission by the original sponsor. The system heightens the social, economic, and legal vulnerability of WMDWs and has been described as unfree or bound labor and a system of racialized servitude. Yet, Kafala is not a written policy but rather a collection of administrative procedures, customary practices, and socially acceptable norms that are maintained by various players throughout the migration process. The question then arises as to whether advocacy efforts that focus on abolishing Kafala as a legal term would mitigate employers’ exploitative practices that violate the workers’ rights and freedoms, particularly in a country like Lebanon. This policy brief is based on a study carried out under the International Labour Organization’s (ILO) Work in Freedom project designed to mitigate the exploitation and forced labor of women migrating from South to West Asia to work in the domestic and garment sectors. This brief explores knowledge, awareness and attitudes to Kafala by employers in Lebanon.

The key question of this study is to ask: what does it take to reproduce a household in urban India? Using a series of time-use surveys, we measure the time taken for 33 different tasks within activity clusters such as domestic services (cleaning, food preparation, procurement, upkeep) and caregiving services (child care and elderly care). Within this, we assess both unpaid work done by members of the household and paid work done by an externally engaged domestic worker. We do so across 9,636 households in two large metropolitan Indian cities– Bengaluru and Chennai – with variations across socio-economic status, caste, religion, neighbourhood type and across households with and without women working for wages.

This paper attempts to establish a formal relationship between innovation and productivity using Colombian firm-level data. It is found that the production of goods and services new to the firm and to the domestic market enhances firms' sales per worker, and innovation that results in introducing new goods and services to the international market boosts both sales and Total Factor Productivity (TFP). Innovation in processes likewise improves firms' productivity and sales. Finally, innovation in marketing and management increases sales per worker and enhances TFP when investment is made in Research and Development. The paper also studies the factors behind firms' decision to invest in innovation, the intensity of such investment and the returns to investment in innovation.

This paper addresses the relationships between innovation, research and development (R&D) and productivity in domestic ICT firms in Costa Rica. Factors considered were the types of innovation outputs produced by domestic ICT firms, the relative importance of innovation inputs, the impacts of innovation on firm productivity, the protection of innovations, and impediments to innovation. While most firms engaged in all types of output and input innovations, they appear to be driven by retaining or increasing market share rather than increasing productivity. Half of firms do not formally protect the intellectual property created by their innovations, are not familiar with methods for protecting innovation or the availability of government grants for such purposes, and face barriers associated with the Costa Rican Patent Office. Other impediments include lack of knowledge about financial resources available and scarcity of human resources. There is also evidence of knowledge spillovers through worker mobility from multinationals operating in Costa Rica to domestic ICT firms.

This paper presents new evidence for major world regions and for the most populous countries in each region on associations between the average ages of populations and three groups of economic outcomes: (1) macroeconomic aggregates (domestic saving as a share of GDP, GDP per capita, capital per worker and tax revenue as a share of GDP); (2) governmental expenditures on education and health; and (3) social indicators (inequality, unemployment, homicide rates, and schooling progression rates). The results suggest that the variables considered follow clear age-related patterns, that the patterns differ by regions, and that the patterns differ with different policy regimes related to trade openness, domestic financial market deepening and macroeconomic volatility. The evidence is consistent with the possibility that some age structure shifts can provide favorable conditions for development. Apparently regions such as East Asia in recent decades have been able to benefit from this demographic opportunity. However, in others such as Latin America and the Caribbean -which is at the verge of experiencing the largest age structure shifts in the coming decades- creating an adequate economic environment to translate the opportunity into higher living standards for its population is a major challenge.

- The UK is less exposed to the direct effects of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine than its European neighbours. However, the indirect and longer-term effects of the war on UK trade could still be significant. - Inflationary pressure worldwide will contribute to price rises in the UK, particularly for food and energy. The ongoing effects of both Brexit – which has caused cross-border supply frictions and worker shortages – and the COVID-19 pandemic – which led to pent-up domestic demand and further reduced the labour force – will only increase this upward pressure. - The war has prompted increased scrutiny of London’s role as a centre for kleptocratic wealth from Russia and elsewhere, and has lead the UK government to impose sanctions against Russian-linked individuals and companies. This could impact inward investment directly, through legal restrictions on business activities, or indirectly, by indicating that the UK is no longer open to trade with certain countries. - In the longer term, post-war Ukraine’s future status and trading relationship with the EU could affect the UK, as the process of defining Ukraine’s position with regard to the EU may encourage Brussels to revisit its relations with the UK or even to explore alternative models for other non-member countries on the EU’s periphery. - A renewed focus on European security could also encourage the UK and EU to improve trade, security and political ties. The need to enhance security closer to home may also cause the UK to rethink the ‘Indo-Pacific tilt’ outlined in the 2021 Integrated Review.
