The objectives of this paper are three folds: firstly, to highlight the studies which have used documentary film as authentic input in teaching second language skills, secondly to review the studies which have used documentary film in enhancing the second language writing skill, and lastly to offer ways to deal with documentary film in improving Arabic as a Second Language (ASL) writing skill. For this purpose, the paper analyses related literature review and previous studies in the field. The literature review shows the concern of second language practitioners as well as scholars in the field in using documentary film in the learning process. However, studies related to ASL are very scarce. There are four steps to be adopted for the purpose of linking documentary film input with enhancing writing skills output. The paper also highlights the strengths of documentary film as authentic input in language teaching as well as putting forth some technical advice and suggestions to improve the selection of teaching materials. The interwar period was an important time in the history of Polish documentary writing. The poetics of the genre was formed at the turn of the 1920s and 30s. At that time, there was a debate about the cognitive and aesthetic values of documentary writing. A variety of thematic forms quickly emerged, including works about foreign countries. This subgenre had two main variants: the „exotic documentary” (or „exotic-adventure”) and „sociopolitical documentary”. The present article examines a selection of texts representing both the variants and written by: Ferdynand Goetel, Zbigniew Uniłowski, Aleksander Janta-Połczyński, Ksawery Pruszyński, Melchior Wańkowicz, Antoni Słonimski, Zygmunt Nowakowski and others.

In lieu of an abstract, here is the first paragraph of this forum contribution: My contribution to this forum on life writing contemplates life narrative practices in documentary film and proposes two theses that also bear relevance for other fields and media under discussion here. Firstly, it problematizes the concepts of autobiography and life writing for their applicability to (documentary) film, arguing with Alisa Lebow for a notion of "first person film."[1] Secondly, it contends that representations of the self in documentary film are more appropriately comprehended as a discourse rather than a genre.

Three different types of narrative writings from women who have recently immigrated to Taiwan are discussed here: oral/confessional narrative, textual narrative, and documentary films. The first is the primary kind of narrative writing produced while immigrant women are still struggling with the acquirement of a new language, and relies on help from local people to deliver the new immigrants’ voice. The textual narrative illustrates the mother figures in terms of madness or absence from home; emphasizing the conflict of mother-daughter relationships. The last type of narrative writing produced by newly immigrating women are the documentary films, which are shot by themselves and attempt to demonstrate the bravery of these new immigrant spouses in defending their rights. The results of this paper show that, through the narrative writings, female immigrants from Southeast Asia in Taiwan have produced a variety of issues and topics which create a link of dialogue with Taiwanese society, and which need to be understood. What is more, the process of constructing their new identity is worth discussing as it provides a new perspective on Asian ethnic and women’s writing, and uncovers the need for more research into diasporic women―studied from the approach of displacement.

Documentary film is a film genre that has a very important role in human civilization. Documentary films can "revive" everything that did not exist before, so that it can be known by a wide audience through visualization and verbal information that can be accounted for. One of the functions that documentaries also have is as a cultural educational medium that is easily accessed digitally by anyone, anywhere. This writing will examine the philosophical values that are visually transformed in the Cultural Documentary Film "The Balinese Bride Makeup: Symbols and Meanings". This writing uses a qualitative descriptive method, by providing explanatory descriptions of the results of the study using Documentary Film theory (Ayawaila: 2018) and Anthropological theory (Sare: 2007). The results obtained through this paper include findings on 3 cultural philosophical values contained in the documentary films used as research objects, as follows: 1) Character Education Values; 2) Values of Roles and Responsibilities, and 3) Cultural Inheritance Values.

This study assessed the case of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) on academic writing difficulties of hospitality and tourism management students. This study used a qualitative approach upon a case study design because it deals with the study of an individual language learner. This study was conducted in the second semester of the academic year 2021-2022. The respondents of this study were ten hospitality management students and ten tourism students from the College of Business and Management. The researcher used an interview guide as the main data-gathering instrument supported by documentary analysis. Content analysis was used in interpreting the gathered data. Results indicated that hospitality and tourism management students performed poorly in writing because they had low self-efficacy toward writing. The majority of the students had little courage to spell words correctly, they had little confidence to put thoughts into writing and had much fear in writing a composition. Moreover, based on documentary analysis, students struggle to organize and use writing mechanics. Students encounter numerous writing problems regarding the correct use of grammatical rules, and they find writing in a second language quite tricky.

AbstractIn Luís de Camões’s epic The Lusiads, diverse semantic levels of writing overlap. The intertwining of poetry and documentation results here in perspectives on writing that judge it in different ways, since a tension springs up in The Lusiads between poetry and the new fields of knowledge concerning experimental ‘New Science’ and nautical experience. With respect to the poetics of The Lusiads, this tension becomes evident when a line is drawn from the Renaissance to classical antiquity. A further level of writing can be seen in the field of the shipping of writings – primarily of the founding work of The Lusiads – which was, from a textually external point of view and from that of the history of the media – facilitated by book printing; conversely, the process of writing down ships, that is, their routes registered on maps and in the periplus, manifests itself in Camões’s epic in the form of a documentary mode of writing.

one of the literary innovations is the new genre of documentary poetry or docupoetry. Documentary poetry has no unified definition, but one defining line is that it combines artistic talent along with factual material from the real world or the documents of real witnesses. It is a method of writing that mixes texts for make ethnographic research. However, documentary refers to the poetry of witness through which verses make existing documentation created from manifold viewpoints, witnesses’ interpretations, and dialogues. It is a case study of people, events, and places; the poet can test a social and human case, through his artistic talent of writing. However, a poet is expected to transfer not only the witnesses’ perspectives but his own as well. These tendencies are colorized in an attempt to portray a new version of the truth. It is an attempt to raise the voice of the marginalized or the oppressed or the often neglected against the voice of their suppressors; it portrays a rather distinct version of the national story or identity. In conclusion, it highlights the meaning of documentary poetry, its development, and its characteristics. It also attempts to give a brief critical analysis of some selected poems by some selected prominent documentary poets.

The article deals with the peculiarities of the artistic organization of autodocumentary writing in thediary prose of V.V. Rozanov «Solitaria» and «Fallen Leaves». The article reviews the genre definitions of Rozanov's prose which correlate with the concept of «other literature». The purpose of the analysis is to identify the specifics of the subject organization of diary writing, which, along with genre markers, determines the artistic value of the documentary narrative in the texts under consideration. A holistic analysis of Rozanov's autodocumentary prose made it possible to formulate some important features of the architectonics of «Solitaria» and «Fallen Leaves»: 1) the author of the self-documentary narrative is extralocated to his own being in the way that is characteristic of the author's extralocation of a fictional text; 2) the «out-of-life narrative» in «Fallen Leaves» is naturally connected with the thematic contexts of death and dying; 3) this peculiar author's extralocation of the documentary writing in these texts explains many specific features of Rozanov's diary prose, such as the semantic ambivalence of his statement, a special chronotope, and the specifics of addressing.

Although often assumed to be polar opposites, documentary and fiction are in fact theoretically and practically intermeshed, just as history and fiction, also conventually seen as opposites, are symbiotically connected. Historian Hayden White argued in Metahistory that the myth/history distinction was arbitrary and of recent invention. In words that apply to film as well as to writing, White pointed out that it matters little whether the world that is conveyed to the reader/spectator is conceived to be real or imagined; the manner of making discursive sense of it through tropes and emplotment is identical (WHITE, 1973). In this article, we will examine the ways that the hybridization of documentary and fiction has been mobilized as a radical aesthetic resource.

In Belgium, depending on their immigration status, foreigners may be entitled to different forms of social assistance, ranging from emergency medical care to financial benefits. In a context where residence permits are constantly updated, re-examined or withdrawn by the administration, this article explores the ways in which welfare bureaucrats deal with irregular migrants. Based on ethnographic fieldwork at welfare offices in French-speaking Belgium, this article shows that documentary practices in welfare bureaucracies have the effect of both restricting access to social assistance and aiding irregular migrants in bringing cases against the administration. This article thus also delves into the double-edged relationship of the social workers to the state by focusing on the competing norms and interpretations of law they encounter on a daily basis.

This article explores how several novelists in the first half of the twentieth century, including James Agee, Jack London, George Orwell, and John Steinbeck, portrayed other, often marginal, real lives in works of reportage and documentary writing—terms variously defined and utilised by critics and practitioners, but seen here as hybrid, intersecting forms of life writing. It argues that such work has an extremely artful element of verbal portraiture of real-life people, often in dialogue with photography. The process of writing and witnessing reportage work differs substantially from that of fiction. Focusing on certain factors key to the portraiture in reportage—including unfamiliarity, representativeness, standpoint, and objectivity—the article analyses these writers’ treatment of them. The extent to which these writers revealed their documentary or reportorial role to their subjects, or disguised it, is also considered. Moving between international, cultural, political and social contexts, and deeply informed by chance and accident, early twentieth century reportage emerges as a highly interactive, volatile, and intersubjective space in its portraiture of others, nonetheless defined finally by the writer’s point of view.

Biography would seem to be firmer ground than literary criticism: at least we like to think that biography has a factual basis in the writer's life. But of course, when we deal with biography, our sources turn out to be yet more texts (memoirs, diaries, letters, and the like), and for this reason we often discover that the documentary evidence for the writer's life is less than objective and in fact displays its own biases and is governed by its own conventions of representation.

Students were diverse in race, gender and disability. Findings indicated documentary making yielded positive outcomes for students as well as for the teachers. By selectively appropriating desktop documentary making technology, teachers engaged students in a technology-based project. Documentary making also opened opportunities for teachers’ close interaction with students, while still managing a potentially disruptive classroom. Students, who struggled with reading and writing, completed an engaging, lengthy, complex history project and exercised historical thinking skills. The object of the study is documents of business correspondence in Russian-Arabic official communication; the subject of the study is the syntactic features of Russian and Arabic business documents, the similarities and differences between Russian and Arabic syntax in business communication. Syntactic organization is very important for business writing; it serves as the final stage of its structure. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the identification of universal and culturally determined features of the syntactic structure in relation to Russian and Arabic-language business writing. Among the universal elements are the use of sentences that convey the non-personal nature of communication, indirect expression of imperativeness (using forms of the subjunctive mood, interrogative sentences), introductory words with the semantics of politeness. Original syntactic constructions can be used to achieve a similar communicative effect. The research was carried out on the basis of methods of analysis, synthesis, observation, description. Methods of component analysis, interpretation and classification, a system-structural method, and elements of a functional approach were used. As a result of the study, it was noted that the differences in the syntactic structure of Russian- and Arabic-language business letters are culturally and historically determined. The specifics of Arabic business syntax were influenced by increased requirements for the expression of politeness in society (indication of the regalia of the addressee), the predominance of the collective over the personal in culture, the origin of the official business style from the artistic, and not from the colloquial (long sentences). It is concluded that it is necessary to take into account cultural and historical factors both in the process of constructing business letters and in the process of their mutual translation. Among the important techniques of Russian-Arabic translation are combining sentences and increasing content

The article examines the essayistic legacy of Mykola Lepkyi and his war-documentary prose. The research is based on accurate biographical information, substantiated by archival documents and familial testimonies found in private correspondence and published memoirs. Specifically, the work «Z voiennoho zapysnyka» is scrutinized, encompassing documentary evidence of events during the First World War and representing, in our estimation, a noteworthy augmentation to the memoirs of that epoch, particularly distinguished for its distinctive approach to the meticulous depiction of historical occurrences. Utilizing extensive archival material, recollections from the author’s daughter, manuscripts, newspaper publications, and Mykola Lepkyi’s notebooks, an effort is made to reconstruct the writer’s biography within the contemporary realms of domestic literary criticism and scholarly investigation into the history of Ukrainian literature. The outcomes of the conducted research have enabled the illumination of heretofore underexplored facets of M. Lepkyi’s biography, concurrently augmenting analysis of the writer’s creative legacy with a novel interpretation of his memoirs. Keywords: biography, political and cultural activities, essay writing, World War I.

Abstract Classification of its narratives reveals Lamentations Rabbah’s preferences as to narrative types and their functions. On the foundation of this knowledge we can correlate Rabbinic narratives with the boundaries defined by particular documents and, ultimately, are able, on the foundations of literary evidence, to describe the Rabbinic structure and system. Understanding the way the documentary evidence took shape and how it accomplished its compilers’ goals is required for that description. If we do not know whether or how narratives fit into the canonical constructions of Rabbinic Judaism in its formative age and normative statement, we cannot account for important data of that Judaism. The result of this study is to show that narratives, no less than expository, exegetical, and analytical writing, form part of the documentary self-definition of the Rabbinic canonical writings. Through the study of Lamentations Rabbah (referred to also as Lamentations Rabbati) in particular, it advances our ability to evaluate how a rhetorical form as represented in one document compares or contrasts with that form as it is used in other discrete rabbinic texts.

One of the most talked about moments of Ken Burns's television documentary The Civil War (1990) was the dramatic reading of Sullivan Ballou's letter to his wife, Sarah, in which the Union officer anticipates his own death in the First Battle of Bull Run. This moving conclusion to the series' first episode and the sensation it caused underscore the persistence of a gendered model of wartime literacy: the ideal war-text is an eyewitness account written by a man, and read by a woman at home. Women, the Ballou letter sequence suggests, are consumers, not producers of war-texts. As innovative as Burns's documentary was, however, the dramatization of a personal letter from the front has a long history. The first chapter of Louisa May Alcott's Little Women (1868), for example, climaxes with Marmee's recitation of a letter from Mr. March, absent at the war. “Very few letters,” the narrator tells us, “were written in those hard times that were not touching, especially those which fathers sent home.” Both Burns's original script for the Ballou segment and Alcott's earlier writing about the war reveal the artificiality of the normative model of literacy presented by The Civil War and Little Women; in order to maintain exclusively male control over the production of wartime texts, documentary and novel must repress or radically circumscribe female voices. Burns originally planned to have an actress, reading as Sarah Ballou, finish the letter, but decided against it; the effect of a woman reading would have been “so emotional [ctdot ] just too much” – as if even a female audience for the male wartime text can only be hinted at, not represented.

In the grounds of Newton House near Insch in Aberdeenshire are two Pictish monuments. One is an inscribed stone that also has an incised Pictish mirror symbol, and the other is a Pictish symbol stone with a notched double-disc above a serpent and z-rod symbol. The inscribed stone, commonly referred to as the Newton Stone, has an ogham inscription on one edge that continues onto an added stemline, and on the top front is a unique horizontal, six-line alphabetic inscription. This article examines the documentary record for these two monuments, which were moved from their original location in the 18th and 19th centuries respectively. Through analysis of the documentary evidence, and in comparison with the local geology, the area of the original findspot of the Newton Stone and associated symbol stone is identified. The original landscape of these stones is compared with the topographical features of other Pictish monuments, particularly those in Donside. This comparison reveals that the topographical and liminal features in the original vicinity of the Newton Stone and symbol stone correspond with the wider pattern of the siting of Pictish symbol stones and Pictish cemeteries, and the association between a potentially Pictish-age settlement and these monuments may be suggested through examination of local place-names.

The article discusses a specific period of the production of the documentary genre at TV Ljubljana, known as the period of the Ljubljana School of Documentary Film (19811990). The focus of this research is predominantly the conditions and limitations of production, under which documentary films and practices, as well as the routines of the creators, were created, to analyse how production practices were reflected in the form and style of documentary films. The documentary films of this period began to move away from news coverage with current political content and the explanatory mode of representation, and moved towards the participatory and observatory modes of representation. The routines and practices became more professional. In particular, journalists began writing scripts and collaborating with talented directors from AGRFT (Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television). Despite financial and production limitations, which placed numerous bureaucratic tasks into the creative process, and the self-censorship of creators, under the leadership of editor Drago Pečko and with the collaboration of directors, numerous authorial documentary films were made that were recognized in the Yugoslav space. Owing to the changed circumstances of the media, the management of public television saw the direction of the development of the medium after 1990 tend towards entertainment programmes, which meant that the documentary began losing its former importance in the name of ratings and advertising revenues.
