Annotation:

Muslims have the starring role in the mass media’s curriculum on otherness, which circulates in-between local and global contexts to powerfully constitute subjectivities. This study inquires into what it is like to be a female, Muslim student in Ontario, in this post 9/11 discursive context. Seven young Muslim women share stories of their high schooling experiences and their sense of identity in interviews and focus group sessions. They also respond to images of Muslim females in the print media, offering perspectives on the intersections of visual media discourses with their lived experience. This interdisciplinary project draws from cultural studies, postcolonial feminist theory, and post-reconceptualist curriculum theorizing. Working with auto/ethno/graphy, my own subjectivity is also brought into the study to trouble researcher-as-knower and acknowledge that personal histories are implicated in larger social, cultural, and historical processes. Using bricolage, I compose a hybrid text with multiple layers of meaning by juxtapositing theory, image, and narrative, leaving spaces for the reader’s own biography to become entangled with what is emerging in the text. Issues raised include veiling obsession, Islamophobia, absences in the school curriculum, and mass media as curriculum. Muslim females navigate a complex discursive terrain and their identity negotiations are varied. These include creating Muslim spaces in their schools, wearing hijab to assert their Muslim identity, and downplaying their religious identity at school. I argue for the need to engage students and teacher candidates in complicated conversations on difference via auto/ethno/graphy, pedagogies of tension, and epistemologies of doubt. Educators and researchers might also consider the possibilities of linking visual media literacy with social justice issues.

Abstract: For some years now, the approach to teaching mother tongue, more specifically grammar, has been a real challenge and has become the subject of reflections, debates and qualitative research. The objective of this research is to investigate how the domain processes of discourse genres WhatsApp, Formal Letter and Journalistic News occur as cultural tools in the classroom used by high school students, in the light of the perspectives of James Wertsch's Mediated Action Theory. The data were collected through audio and video recordings and activities written in a private school in São José do Rio Preto/SP. The analysis of the data allows us to observe that the categories Uncertainty and Formality help us not only in the investigation of how the processes of mastery of a cultural tool occur, but also if the agent already masters the tool. We observed that the more students exercise a cultural tool, the greater their mastery over it. In contrast, using only the same tool may end up not helping the agent to use others. The teacher's intervention also plays an important role in the process of mastering cultural tools. The mastery of the cultural tool contributes to the student's teaching-learning process and is closely correlated with the elaboration of meanings.

Annotation:
This study aims to analyze the modifications that various digital supports can produce throughout several languages (we take into account Romanian and French). In doing that, it is influenced by the support’s technological features and therefor separates our corpus source accordingly: blog, chat, SMS, Facebook. The purpose is therefor finding if this (or those) new way (s) of communication change the traditional rules of exchange (spoken or written). In order to evaluate the differences between the digital discourse and the previous types, one has to compare the collected data to the prior types: dialogue and conversation. Statistical frequency analysis will complete our perspective as for this new discourse genre’s stability. This will allow shaping its general lines as well as its inner variation. The next step is a comparative study of various intercultural situations (the cultural context that can modify the speaking frame). We turn therefor towards a description of the interactive behavior within the two cultures. We shall take into account the interaction’s prototypical course in a given situation as well as its specificity according to the situation/ frame/ specific speaker
Pasul urmator este trasarea studiului comparativ a situatiilor culturale (contextul cultural inerent putand sa modifice in mod sensibi lcadrul conversational). Ne vom apleca astfel asupra unei descrieri a comportementelor interactive in interiorul celor doua culturi pentru a obtine o comparatie exhaustiva. Astfel derularea prototipica a interactiunii intr-o situatie data cat si declinarile sale specifice in functie de situatie/ cadru/ locutor specific, sunt elemente cheie in cadrul studiului nostru

In this article, we analyze the positive and negative comments displayed on the digital platform YouTube as a result of the debate on the Law on the Preservation, Use and Dissemination of Languages: discussion between Peruvian congresswomen Martha Hildebrandt and María Sumire, which took place on September 6, 2007. Through the Critical Discourse Analysis (Fairclough, 1995, Van Dijk, 1999, Wodak and Meyer, 2003), we study how commentators generate discourses of discrimination and racism when using linguistic strategies. The discourses are divided into two groups: one in favor and in defense of Martha Hildebrandt's action and the other against the same character, but in defense of the opposite party: Maria Sumire. Based on this, it is demonstrated how through the comments made virtually, hierarchical relations are reproduced and excluding social practices are legitimized in relation to both congressmen, who represent different social images.

The notion of ‘culture’ features in the abortion literature to explicate, first, contestation of the meaning of abortion (as in the ‘culture wars’ about abortion), second, the normalisation of abortion in certain countries (as in ‘abortion culture’), third, the response of women to abortion within a particular social milieu and fourth, cross-cultural variability in attitudes towards and experiences of abortion. What is missing is an exploration of how ‘culture’ may be deployed as a discursive resource to oppose legal abortion. In this article, we report on a study conducted in a rural area of South Africa. We conducted focus group discussions utilising hypothetical vignettes to stimulate talk. Although, inconsistencies were evident in participants’ talk, in the context of cultural discussions, abortion was constructed as killing and inevitably destructive of cultural values and traditions. Abortion was equated with colonialist interventions and as something that should be opposed in the preservation of culture. Furthermore, cultural opposition to abortion was rooted in fears around the breakdown of gendered and generational power relations. Examples of how culture may be used in everyday interactions to induce shame and negative experiences are also discussed.

This study aims at presenting a discursive analysis of the subjects\' responses to questions from the Questionnaire for Semantic-Lexical whose concepts guiding the linguistics research are: árvore, chuva miúda e demorada, chuva de pedra, Via- Láctea and arco-íris from the Linguistic Atlas of Paraná - ALPR and from the Linguistic Inquiry Boléo - ILB. The analysis takes as reference the processes and the condition of language production considering the relation between language and subjects who speak it and also the situations in which their speech is produced (ORLANDI, 2001a, p. 16). Based on the French Discourse Analysis framework, the interest of this study \"is the investigation of lexical items used by subjects in their answers, in a discursive activity\" (SANTOS, 2012, p. 42). It is intended to show that lexical choices are not so innocent, they glimpse the different discursive formations of the subjects who enunciate, making valid their lexical choices. The theoretical approach combines contributions from Geolinguistics, Dialectology and French Discourse Analysis. To understand the choice and use of different lexical items used by the subjects in their answers, it was necessary to resort to history in order to explain the social and the ideological processes that enable the presence of these statements and endorse them as part of a given discursive formation. We can say that, in Geolinguistics, the different designations used by individuals to describe the so called real world can not be considered only as a simple list of lexical items used by these subjects. In this sense, it is possible to say that the lexical choices, as they produce new meaning effects, are constituted by a discursive memory register to which these subjects belongs and from which they appropriate during their interactions. Apart from the geolinguistic approach, this research glimpses the speech of subjects who belong to certain social and historical groups. Their speech, which is pervaded by feelings, beliefs, superstitions or customs, reveals the various discourses in which these subjects participate, which, producing meanings between speakers, unveil the socio-historical transformations of a social group. This reinforces the idea that meaning is produced in a social space directly connected to the subject ideological affiliation, for his voice reveals the social space to which he belongs.

Ethno-linguistic diversities and the rights to enjoy and maintain indigenous languages and identities has been a central issue in the socio-political agenda of Turkey since the foundation of the Republic of Turkey. The Lazi have taken their part in the discussions concerning minority rights through the discourses of a group of Lazi activists since the early 1990s.This study aims to examine the discursive construction of Lazi identity with close attention to its various actors and the context in which the process is carried out. To this end, selected texts by the social actors who are involved in the Lazi identity building process are studied in terms of various functions of language contributing to the communicative production of discourses. The content of written and oral commentaries by various social actors who are influential in the Lazi identity building process is studied using Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA).The study concludes that the construction of Lazi identity is an on-going process which is developed by influential social actors. The discourses of Lazi activists display a dilemma between the commitment to establish or re-establish a distinct Lazi identity with emphasis on a distinct language and culture rooted in ancient history and a determination to remain a component of the Republic of Turkey.

This thesis discusses the notion of culture and addresses it as a discursive topic, aiming to reflect on its role in practices for teaching/learning foreign languages, specifically for teaching Spanish to Brazilians. This approach restores historicity to the term by discussing its relationship with history based on a number of theoretical works concerning culture produced in the fields of cultural studies, sociology and cultural anthropology, putting them to use in the field of language studies (in accordance with the theoretical perspective of materialist discourse analysis) and, more specifically, of the reflection on practices for teaching foreign languages, especially Spanish, such that this reflection has a resonance in the area of teacher training. This work concerns issues related to culture, identity, ideology and coloniality, following a theoretical path that results in the development of guidelines based on texts from the literary sphere aimed at introducing them into the field of teacher training. The reflections presented here are designed to provide resistance to certain types of work on culture and the ways these are included in some manner in certain stereotyped and established knowledge about the other and about language, affected by colonialities of power and knowledge in practices related to the teaching of a foreign language.

Annotation:
The thesis analyses the discursive construction of migrants’ identities through their native language communications, using Russian-speaking migration in the UK as the case study. Material from internet forums these migrants were engaged in the years 2002-2005 forms the basis of this research. The project is concerned with the question of how Russian-speaking migrants, faced with the process of accustoming themselves to a new place of residence (UK), re-negotiate the Self, their homeland (in both real geographical terms and metaphorically through their cultural affiliations) and the Other. This study draws on theories from a range of research perspectives including hermeneutics, discourse analysis, cultural studies, and ethnography. The theoretical framework developed in this thesis combines Foucault’s analysis of discourse with Lotman’s model of dialogue between cultures. The thesis also develops sampling techniques for virtual data. By examining how the dichotomy Russia vs. Europe/the West is imagined in the researched data, this study argues that the concept of Europeanism obtains positive associations, while the concept of the West retains its ambiguity for Russian-speaking migrants. The thesis identifies Europeanism as a discursive object of knowledge and examines its categorizations. The study identifies kul`tura and tsivilizatsia as grids of specifications of Europeanism, and investigates Self/Other dialectics attached to the object of knowledge. Finally, the thesis analyses the dynamics of cultural appropriation under influences of the host context, and elaborates on semiotic “translation” of new phenomena.

Annotation:
Writers as diverse as Oscar Wilde (1915), Matthew Arnold (1960), Erich Fromm (1997) and a proliferation of contemporary self-help gurus, variously assert that it is preferable for people to focus on “being”, or to value “who you are”, instead of emphasising “having” or the material possessions you have acquired. These discourses assert that individuals content with “being” are happier and more fulfilled than those involved in the constant (and alienating) motion of acquiring material goods as representations of themselves (de Botton, 2004; Fromm, 1997; James, 2007). This thesis provides an in-depth critical exploration of one of these ideal “ways of being”: authenticity. It does not seek to discover what authenticity is in an empirical sense, nor to define what it should be in a normative sense, but to map the cultural work done by changing and often contradictory discourses of personal authenticity. More specifically, this study uses a qualitative research design, social constructionist theoretical framework, and discourse analytic method to critically discuss the discursive constructions of subject authenticity in South African brand culture. The sample consisted of (1.) ten marketing campaigns of several large, mainstream brands, which were popular in South Africa from 2015 to 2017, and (2.) fifteen smaller South African “craft” brands popular in the “artisanal” context. The analysis is presented in two distinct, but interrelated, sections (namely, Selling Stories and Crafting Authenticity), where the relevant discourses of authenticity for each data set are explored in depth. Through this analysis the thesis provides a critical discussion of the ways in which these discourses of authenticity work to produce and maintain, (or challenge and subvert), subject positions, ideologies, and power relations that structure contemporary South African society.

Abstract: Considering the aesthetic ideal that music represents in our country, this work demonstrates through the enunciation analysis, the values transmitted by subjects that expressed themselves in these speeches. Observing the plurality that composes the Brazilian popular culture, we investigated the enunciative elements constituents of two specific types of discursive genres linked to artistic expression that circulates in particular contexts, but proposing a dialogue of their social and discursive relations inside a situation of production. Focusing on discursive elements, between verbal and melodic language of these manifestations, we discussed the factors that are in the limits of language and its relation to the social. Our objective was to reflect on the speech that constitutes Rap and Repente songs, as well as the dialogue that exists between these musical genres, considering their language, that in Brazil has social influence and representation. We use the analytical categories of the Bakhtin Circle, appropriating of concepts that address language as interaction between subjects in some context. To investigate the relevance of our hypothesis of dialogue between genres, our corpus consisted by artists authors of rap and repente songs: João Paraibano and Sebastião Dias; Kamau; Zé Brown; RAPadura; O Rappa; Thaíde; Caju and Castanha. At the end this research, we concluded that the dialogue hypothesis is confirmed, considering the factors as the character of absorption of this musical genres, provided that (re)creations. Furthermore, we believe that the self-worth of a new generation of rap listeners that have contact to the production of Northeastern Singing, search in these forms of oral tradition a identity as Brazilian person, son of various races and crossed by multiple discourses

This study is consisted of a specific reality of the historical context of Paraíba and the relationship of language-culture-society and lexicon, from the perspective of Discursive Tradition: ads. Based on the ideas of Coseriu, Kabatek, Oesterrecher, Schiliben-lange, among others, the work aimed at identifying, from the study and analysis of the ads of and on fashion, the textual presence of social historic cultural aspects of the language and lexicon, as marks of the movement of social construction in periodicals from Paraíba state. The nineteenth century was established as a time marker of the research, observing the classification and categorization of the topic (issue), specifically by means of fashion with the selection and study of the ads, in particular, the period from 1862 to 1895. The corpus is formed by ads of and on fashion - clothing and accessory - collected from thirteen newspapers from Paraíba state of the determined period: A Imprensa (JI), O Publicador (JPU), O Despertador (JD), O Conservador (JC), Jornal da Parahyba (JJP), O Liberal Parahybano (JLP), O Mercantil (JME), Gazeta da Parahyba (JGP), O Estado da Paraíba (JEdaP), O Estado do Parahyba (JEdoP), O Parahybano (JP), A União(JU) e Gazeta do Comércio (JGC). Such advertisements were collected by employees of the Casa José Américo Foundation and researchers from the Federal University of Paraíba (UFPB), cataloged and published under the organization of Aldridge & Nicolau (2009) at Quem o pretender comprar dirija-se a... coletânea de anúncios paraibanos do século XIX, as part of the History Project of the Brazilian Portuguese (PHPB), which catalogues and studies the history (tradition) of various genres from the colonial era in Brazil. During this particular study, some changes in the ads under the socio historical factors were observed, however, many features have been maintained (retained), for this reason this genre was considered as a discursive tradition. Therefore, the understanding of the construction of the central question of this work was to understand how the ads related to fashion construct meanings, circulate social discourses and show (reveal) cultural and ideological values, a new way of living and thinking. The textual structure and the discursive aspects of the corpus has allowed us to identify the socio-historical-cultural and lexical-semantic relevant aspects to the society of Paraiba state at that time.

Annotation:
This thesis is devoted to analysing change in Turkish strategic culture, which is conceptualized as change in narratives. In the mainstream literature it has been customary to provide explanations about the change in Turkish foreign policy by applying existing theories which focus on the ideological differences between Kemalism, Islamism and Liberalism or the implications of democratization and globalization for Turkish society, economy and politics. This thesis proposes a different framework based on the discursive practices of the Turkish foreign policy elite in the form of narratives. The main research question is: What sorts of narratives regarding national defence and security have been produced by the AKP elite to challenge the dominant national security state narratives? It is the overarching argument in this thesis that within the emerging Turkish strategic culture the Ottoman past is neither seen as a distant past nor a temporal other; Turkey’s geography and neighbourhood is neither a liability nor a spatial other; and concepts and values such as soft power and the promotion of democratic values is no longer considered as naive nor alien by the Turkish state elite. This thesis suggests that three contested narratives can be found within Turkish strategic culture. Among these narratives, the thesis identifies the emergence of two new narratives which challenge a hitherto dominant master narrative, i.e. the national security state master narrative. These two counter-narratives are i) Turkey as a "great country" that is able to address foreign policy issues with a renewed self-esteem that stems from the nostalgic utilization of its historical and cultural assets; and ii) Turkey as an "internationally active player" that aspires to contribute to the international system by playing a new international role and by aligning itself with universal norms and values. By extending the analysis of Turkish strategic culture to the field of narratives and narrative analysis this study demonstrates that Turkish strategic culture is no longer a strategic culture of a national security state or a flank state or a middle power, it is rather constructed within the narratives of the Turkish state elite, which is primarily built upon the overarching narratives of great country and internationally active player. Contrary to the ideology-centred explanations and paradigm shift arguments about the change in Turkish foreign policy, the approach suggested in this thesis provides rather complex, yet arguably more nuanced and comprehensive explanation than the ones on offer in the literature. Lastly, by taking master narratives and counter narratives as the units of analysis to understand the cultural change, this thesis also contributes to the literature on strategic culture by illustrating the role of agency and their practices of challenging dominant narratives by producing counter-narratives.

Annotation:
In this thesis several strands of enquiry are braided together. Accounts eo-created with migrant participants are privileged, theoretical material is critically appraised and a range of analytical resources employed. The various explorations follow particular trajectories that make some aspects visible whilst occluding others. Critical appraisal of selected examples of empirical psychological research provides insight into processes by which constructs of migration may be generated and employed, and the authority conferred to this type of research in social and political migration policies is questioned. In recognition of the importance of the host locality in a migrant's ability to adapt, an overview of Manchester's historical, economic and social features is presented and the policy ofmulti-culturalism is discussed. Understandings ofloss and stress that may be associated with migrations are examined through close critique of particular psychoanalytic perspectives on migrations. A resulting broad analytic frame is developed to explore the participants' accounts. To expand understandings of self and culture as intertwined, the meta- theories of the Dialogical Self and Dialogism are examined. Through engaging these meta-theories a deeper exploration of psycho cultural subjectivities is undertaken. Particular contested polyvocalities are identified as themata of "Culture" and "Colour of skin, 'race', belonging". These themata are explored through progressive braiding of pertinent theoretical resources and further critical discursive and dialogical analyses of constructed subjectivities. A concluding discussion appraises the contributions, strengths and weaknesses of this thesis and identifies its particular contributions to knowledge. Annotation:
The way in which society organises agriculture affects every aspect of our lives: our approach to the land and its organisms, the building of civilisations, economic inequality, gender relations, human health and our relationship with the land’s original custodians. Yet humanity has organised itself around an industrialised global food system which erodes democracy, perpetuates injustices, undermines human health and is environmentally fatal. Recognising this, farmers, activists and scholars have been calling for a transition to agroecological food systems for centuries. It is a paradigm which holistically addresses the agri-culture of our food systems; not just the sustainability of agroecosystems, but the socio-political structures that design them. This work joins the movement of literature calling for epistemic justice in the institutionalisation of agroecology in food governance. It endeavours to provide a more in-depth understanding of the discourses of sustainable agriculture that operate within Australia. It contributes to the paucity of literature covering agroecology’s nascent development within the country. A poststructuralist discourse analysis (PSDA) analyses the discursive formations of sustainable agriculture operated by the state and civil society actors involved in the debate. It will examine if there are any spaces of “dislocation” through which the paradigm of agroecology can emerge in mainstream discourse. Ultimately, it will reveal how the historic institutionalisation of productivist discourses by dominant groups has resulted in an epistemic community which remains unfavourable to a just transition towards agroecological food systems by 2100.

Annotation:
In this thesis a theory of cultural justice is developed from Hayekian premises. Importantly, and despite the virtual disappearance of the centralised economic institutions that Hayek was always keen to reject, it claims that it is possible to reconnect his thought to contemporary political theory and to both critically and normatively contribute to debates about multicultural justice. For what is most interesting about Hayek today are not the reasons why he defended liberalism but rather the conceptual tools that he deployed in doing so. It is these conceptual tools that can e shown to have a relevance to contemporary concerns with cultural diversity that is methodologically, critically and normatively both clear and compelling. Part One of this thesis discusses Hayek's place in contemporary political theory. In Chapter One it is claimed that an interpretative reading of Hayek's social theory and of the conception of the self that underlies it not only clarifies his well-known economic arguments, but also enables us to appeal to his thought with respect to culture. Chapter Two builds upon this to address Hayek's normative argument for individual cultural liberty. Part Two is concerned to examine, from this Hayekian, the response to diversity of a range of theorists. In Chapter Three, the response of the difference democrats who endorse a group-differentiated account of deliberative democratic decision-making is assessed and, in Chapter Four, that of liberal egalitarian theory that both attempts and in a significant sense rejects the reconciliation of cultural difference with the institutions of the welfare state. Finally, Part Three is concerned with the account of cultural justice emergent from these discussions. Thus Chapter Five concerns itself with the articulation of the Discursive Minimal State and, in Chapter Six, with its defence against some important objections.

Annotation:
Using feminist poststructuralist and postcolonial lenses, I explore how young Lebanese-Canadian women construct health, obesity, and the body within the context of the dominant obesity discourse, which over-emphasizes supposed links between inactivity, nutrition, obesity, and health. Participant-centered conversations were held with 20 young Lebanese-Canadian women between the ages of 18 and 25. The conversational texts were analyzed according to two consecutive methods: a thematic analysis which allowed us to focus on what the participants had to say about health, obesity, and the body followed by a poststructuralist discourse analysis which helped us to decipher how the participants spoke about these topics. The findings of this study attest that the young women construct health, obesity, and the body as matters of individual responsibility. They speak about achieving health and avoiding overweight/obesity through disciplinary practices such as rigorous physical activity and proper dietary restrictions. The participants also construct health in close linkage with the physical appearance of the body; moreover, they conflate the “healthy” and “ideal” female body, which they represent as thin. As such, the young women reject “fat” and portray obesity as a disease, a matter of lack of will, and an “abnormal” physical appearance. Finally, the young Lebanese-Canadian women report their involvement in various practices such as restriction of the quality and quantity of their nutritional intake, rare and non-organized forms of physical activity, and problematic practices such as the use of detoxes, dieting pills, and compulsive exercise, all in the name of health. Throughout this study, I highlight the participants’ multiple and shifting subjectivities: While the young Lebanese-Canadian women most often construct themselves as free neoliberal subjects re-citing elements of dominant neoliberal discourses (of self-authorship, self-responsibility for health, traditional femininity, and obesity), they at times construct themselves as “poststructuralist” subjects showing awareness of, and “micro-resistance” to such discourses. The impacts of the Lebanese and Lebanese-Canadian cultures on the participants’ constructions of health, obesity, and the body comprise an important part of this thesis. The participants accentuate the major importance of beauty and physical appearance—particularly not being fat—in the Lebanese and Lebanese-Canadian cultures. However, they also attempt to distance themselves from “Lebanese” ways of thinking about health, obesity, and the body, and in doing so they replicate homogeneous representations of Lebanese, Lebanese-Canadian, and Canadian women. I offer practical suggestions to inform health and obesity interventions that target Lebanese-Canadian women and women from ethnic minorities and I discuss future research possibilities that may stem from the present thesis.

Annotation:
This thesis employs a discursive methodology to analyse the policy problem of cultural non-participation. In so doing it seeks to answer the questions of what the problem is, why a problem exists, and what the existence of the problem does ‘in the real’ (Bacchi, 2009). The study draws on primary data generated in the form of policy texts, speeches and 42 in-depth qualitative interviews with individuals working in or for publicly funded cultural organisations in Scotland. Employing the methodological approach of problematisation (Foucault, 2003a [1981]), the study offers a close analysis of the discursive logics upon which the construction of the problem relies. In so doing it is asserted that the problem construction functions as an articulatory practice (Laclau & Mouffe, 1985) that not only constitutes and organizes social relations but also supports asymmetric relations of power and allows inequality in society to be represented as both inevitable and sensible (Rancière, 2004). Beginning with a discussion of how cultural participation has been constructed as an object of enquiry, the thesis moves on to consider how cultural non-participation is constructed as a problem across the discursive planes of politics and professional practice. Having made visible the discursive logics of the problem construction, the discussion then examines the contingent historical conditions under which the existence of certain subjects, objects, and the intelligible relations between them became possible. Arguing that the Arts should be understood as a discursive institution, it is proposed that the subject identity of the non-participant is not only a necessary part of the discursive logic of this institution, but also provided the ideal boundary object (Star and Griesemer, 1989) around which the legitimacy of the relationship between the Arts and the state could, in part, be based. Drawing on the work of Jacques Rancière (1991; 2004; 2004), it is argued that the manner in which those labelled as non-participants are subjectified obscures their agency and in so doing suppresses their capacity to speak within the field of cultural policy. As such, the field of cultural policy remains characterized by asymmetric relations of power and dominated by those who lay claim to the discursive identity of cultural professionals. The result is state subsidised practices that while doing little to influence individual patterns of behavior, through performing inclusion and equality contribute to the maintenance of a status-quo in which state support will only be provided to individuals who accept the values of those who exercise the most power in the field.

This research aimed to analyze in the work Amazona, by the brazilian writer Sérgio Sant'Anna, how new forms of contemporary literature are taking advantage of serialized procedures representation, typical of speeches and/or vehicles from the scope of mass culture. The first chapter seeks to situate the literary writing of Amazona within a cultural background in process of depletion, which operates the weakening of the illustrated models of representation and enables the emergence of new literary forms, which stand for the appropriation, the deviation, the rewriting, the secondary status, the simulation. In the second chapter, which deals with the discursive procedures of hybridization present in Amazona, the aim is to highlight the influence, in the narrative fabrication of the novel, of images and compositional procedures typically feuilletonistic, mapping the ways in which the narrative resembles and conforms to address this serialized discourse of this entertainment literature. From this considerations, it becomes possible, then, already in the last chapter, to determine how the narrative appropriates these discourses in order to recycle then and reframes them, as they are removed from their home environment and inserted into a new context of production. For another perspective, if it is notorious in Amazona to set up a novel that behaves and in many ways simulates the typical narratives of feuilletonistic matrix, it is also possible to observe the incorporation into the fictional universe discursive instances from the cinematographic scope. The Seventh Art works on Amazona in order to influence much of the narrative organization, marking the construction of the narrator, characters, time and space and opening to the formation of a scripture that tends, in many aspects, to the filmic realization.

Annotation:
The 1998 television broadcast of The New Zealand Wars documentary series was a significant public event, which had a major impact on a broad range of communities and individuals in Aotearoa New Zealand. This popular television history engaged with issues of historical veracity, race, culture and nationhood and challenged previously dominant discourses associated with these concepts. In doing so, it provoked heated debate, and a re-imagining of 'nation', and also opened up spaces for alternative ways of engaging with historical narrative. Informed by post-colonialism, cultural studies and cultural memory, this thesis explores the discursive and affective role of The New Zealand Wars, as it has operated within the turbulent climate of 1990s New Zealand cultural relations. This catalytic function is described in this thesis as a phenomenon of a television series shaped by, whilst also intervening in, processes of cultural colonisation and decolonisation. While both of these processes involve the transmission of discourse via cultural forms, the act of cultural decolonisation requires, in addition, the convergence of a number of agents (people and communities, discursive and memory resources) and circumstances, within particular contextual conditions. Such a convergence provided the conditions for the discursive synthesis, which shaped the production, construction and reception of this series. The role of audio-visual media (and specifically television documentary) in transmitting cultural memory is significant as it enables the flow of memory through channels or forms (such as visual, oral and aural traditions) that can bring about new perspectives and critical reflections upon colonial discourse and dominant concepts of nation and culture. In addition to these social and intellectual processes of audience engagement, this thesis argues that experiential and affective dimensions of cultural memory can (in these specific circumstances) open up radical spaces, offering the potential for generating awareness and sparking political action. These issues are explored through a tripartite analysis of the production context, construction and reception of The New Zealand Wars series. The integration of these three phases of analysis has generated a number of insights into the potential of audio-visual forms, including their producers and audiences, to participate in the negotiation of, and resistance to, colonial discourse. Such insights serve to challenge taken-for-granted constructions of nation and history, and suggest the increasing relevance of alternative concepts such as community-building and cultural memory. Ultimately, this thesis argues that television documentary can serve as a prime site for the articulation of these concepts. The New Zealand Wars serves as a case study, which demonstrates both the potential of this site, and the significance of the social-historical and cultural context in framing this series.

Annotation:
This thesis offers a discursive and cultural analysis of the responses of three urban local authorities in the UK to the threat of climate change, in terms of mitigating its causes rather than responding to its effects. The research is qualitative in nature and focuses on data collected through semi-structured interviews conducted at each site and in related organisations. After an examination of theoretical positions on climate change and local government, with a cultural analysis of the dominant discourses in these areas, the local authority responses to climate change are analysed at three levels. The first level of analysis concludes that there are minor differences in the responses of different authorities, explainable by contingent circumstances, e.g. differences in infrastructure and institutional specialisations at each site. The second draws out commonalities in the responses of all three authorities, employing the analytical concepts of following rituals, utilising rhetoric, and producing results, and utilising aspects of New Institutionalist organisational theory, temporal sociology, discursive analysis, rhetoric and Cultural Theory (Thompson et aI, 1990). The third level of analysis identifies culturally distinct approaches to climate change, reflective of the 'ways of life' of Cultural Theory, across the authorities, through attention to the discourses employed by respondents. The thesis concludes that authorities' responses to climate change are constrained by the dominance of a 'hierarchist' culture within authorities, and of an 'individualist' culture in broader society, leading to the suppression of conceptualisations of, and responses to, climate change which are arise from the other active 'way of life'; egalitarianism. It argues that egalitarianism offers insights and responses appropriate to 'commons' problems, and that to ensure an effective response to climate change within local authorities, there must be a promotion of egalitarian social relations and cultural biases within them.

Rural and remote areas of Australia remain the last bastion of health disadvantage in a developed nation with an enviable health score-card. During the last ten years, rural and remote health has emerged as a significant issue in the media and the political arena. This thesis examines print media, policy documents and interviews from selected informants to ascertain how they represent medical practitioners and health services in rural and remote areas of Australia, why they do so, and the consequences of such positions. In many of these representations, rural and remote medical practitioners are aligned with national and cultural mythologies, while health services are characterised as dysfunctional and at crisis point. Ostensibly, the representations and identity formulations are aimed at redressing the health inequities in remote rural and Australia. They define and elaborate debates and contestations about needs and claims and how they should be addressed; a process that is crucial in the development of professional identity and power (Fraser; 1989). The research involves an analysis and critical reading of the entwined discourses of culture, power, and the politics of need. Following Wodak and others (1999), these dynamics are explored by examining documents that are part of the discursive constitution of the field. In particular, the research examines how prevailing cultural concepts are used to configure the Australian rural and remote medical practitioner in ways that reflect and advance socio-cultural hegemony. The conceptual tools used to explore these dynamics are drawn from critical and post-structural theory, and draw upon the work of Nancy Fraser (1989; 1997) and Ruth Wodak (1999). Both theorists developed approaches that enable investigation into the effects of language use in order to understand how the cultural framing of particular work can influence power relations in a professional field. The research follows a cultural studies approach, focussing on texts as objects of research and acknowledging the importance of discourse in the development of cultural meaning (Nightingale, 1993). The methodological approach employs Critical Discourse Analysis, specifically the Discourse Historical Method (Wodak, 1999). It is used to explore the linguistic hallmarks of social and cultural processes and structures, and to identify the ways in which political control and dominance are advanced through language-based strategies. An analytical tool developed by Ruth Wodak, Rudolf de Cillia, Martin Reisigl and Karin Leibhart (1999) was adapted and used to identify nationalistic identity formulations and related linguistic manoeuvres in the texts. The dissertation argues that the textual linguistic manoeuvres and identity formulations produce and privilege a particular identity for rural and remote medical practitioners, and that cultural myth is used to popularise, shore up and advance the goals of rural doctors during a period of crisis and change. Important in this process is the differentiation of rural and remote medicine from other disciplines in order to define and advance its political needs and claims (Fraser, 1989). This activity has unexpected legacies for the rural and remote health sector. In developing a strong identity for rural doctors, discursive rules have been established by the discipline regarding roles, personal and professional characteristics, and practice style; rules which hold confounding factors for the sustainability of remote and rural medical practice and health care generally. These factors include: the professional fragmentation of the discipline of primary medical care into general practice and rural medicine; and identity formulations that do not accommodate an ageing workforce characterised by cultural diversity, decreasing engagement in full time work, and a higher proportion of women participants. Both of these factors have repercussions for the recruitment and retention of rural and remote health professionals and the maintenance of a sustainable health workforce. The dissertation argues that the formulated identities of rural and remote medical practitioners in the texts maintain and reproduce relationships of cultural, political and social power. They have also influenced the ways in which rural and remote health services have been developed and funded. They selectively represent and value particular roles and approaches to health care. In doing so, they misrepresent the breadth and complexities of rural and remote health issues, and reinforce a reputational economy built on differential professional and cultural respect, and political and economic advantage. This disadvantages the community, professions and interest groups of lower value and esteem, and other groups whose voices are often not heard. Thus, regardless of their altruistic motivations, the politics of identity and differentiation employed in the formulated identities in the texts are based on an approach that undermines the redistributive goals of justice and equity (Fraser 1997), and works primarily to develop and advantage the discipline of rural medicine.

In this work we evaluate the feminine ethe from the view of the self and of the other which pervade the novels São Bernardo and Luzia-Homem and the songs Garota de Ipanema and Quero te dar . Our approach is supported by the French line of research based on the theoretician Dominique Maingueneau of Discourse Analysis. Furthermore, we have established a dialogue with other theoreticians in Brazil who adopt Maingueneau´s ideas. An investigation of the feminine ethos present in the XIX, XX and XXI centuries was required since the novels and songs we evaluate here are products of these periods, respectively. The work História da Mulher no Brasil was used as a theoretical support of the social experience of the Brazilian women, mainly between the XIX and XX centuries. We evaluate the masculine domination and understand the situation of the woman in this context and the meaning of her ethos from the view of Bordieu´s symbolic power. In the last part of this work, we discuss the features present in a work of art which distinguish it from a product of cultural industry. The concepts formulated by Walter Benjamin, Theodor Adorno, Max Horkheimer and Gilles Lypovetsky and Jean Serroy were adopted in this last part. These authors, as well as Maingueneau, have given support, predominantly, to the analysis of the conflicts experienced by the female characters in the lyrics of the songs studied in this work: the first song is presented by the voice of the poetic self; the second one, by the voice that takes on the formulation of its own discourse.

In this work there shall be presented a study on Croatian and Brazilian media and discursive reconstructions of the concept of the current economic crisis. The objective is to demonstrate the connection between the discursive strategies of the media and the politics, in the formation and constitution of the notion of the current economic crisis, as presented in the Brazilian magazines \"Veja\" and \"Época\" and Croatian magazines Nacional e Globus between 2007 and 2010. We want to confirm the thesis that the hybridism of the politicized media is culturally influenced when dealing with the discursive construction of social phenomena, as the crisis. Therefore, we examine how the media uses processes of persuasion to promote their ideas to the readers, and by so approaching its discourse to the one of politics, according to the definition of Carlos Piovezani Filho (2003). After the theoretical approach of discourse, ideology, text, persuasion, and manipulation and legitimacy and the relationship between political discourse and media has been made, we shall specify the discursive practices which belong to this kind of politicized media discourse present in the articles dealing with the crisis, using the theoretical apparatus of Perseus Abramo (2003), Teun Van Dijk (2002, 2007), Theo Leeuwen (2006) and Norman Fairclough (2001). In the end, we will make a comparative analysis of the Brazilian and Croatian corpus, in order to propose, from the theoretical readings, a multi-methodological conception of analysis, with which we want to show how and in what sense the discursive construction of the concept of the current economic crisis was reconstructed in two different countries and cultures.

Considering the aesthetic ideal that music represents in our country, this work demonstrates through the enunciation analysis, the values transmitted by subjects that expressed themselves in these speeches.

Abstract: This study aims to think about the question of citizenship and the meanings given to it by 8th grade students of a public school in the outskirts of Campinas. The research, developed during the 2nd semester of 2008 with three classes from the 8th grade, is theoretically and methodologically guided by the historical-cultural perspective (Vigotski; Bakhtin), in a constant dialogue with some authors from the Discourse Analysis, Anthropology and Sociology. Trying to overcome recurring positions about the theme of citizenship, which approach man and his social/discursive practices from the classical dichotomies in Human Sciences: social x individual; structure x process, this research worries about the specifically human capacity to signify and confer meanings to reality. In a process of appropriation, conformation and transformation, the subjects act over reality, modifying it and modifying themselves, without renouncing their concrete life conditions. In that movement, the citizenship, both as concept and social/discursive practice, is seen as a multiple and polysemic question which significations are being elaborated, questioned and transformed by the everyday experiences shared at school.

Annotation:
This research considers musicians from different cultural backgrounds, improvising together, and ‘improvising’ new musical contexts. It springs from my practice as a composer and improvising guitarist, exploring the borders between South Indian Carnatic music and jazz. The process of collaborating with musicians from different traditions raises questions about the ways that musicians draw on their acquired knowledge in the production of intercultural music: How do musicians from different cultures interpret each others’ musical gestures and negotiate a cohesive performance? At play throughout the dissertation are the conflicting notions of individual expression, and culturally derived archetypal models of expression. The relationship between musicians and cultures is explored through an ethnographic methodology. The dissertation begins with a critical review of the literature on intercultural hybridity that reveals the way that power inequalities have historically characterised many of the exchanges between the West and its Others. In the course of analysing the products of interculture, the discussion also examines the inherent problem of hybridity’s reception, given the different cultural frames of reference of different audiences. From the analysis of hybridity, improvisation emerges as a key locus for examining the way in which musicians are heard to negotiate self and culture in intercultural hybridity. A new understanding of improvisation is proposed based on an examination of the literature from diverse disciplines including cognitive psychology, complex adaptive systems, embodiment and ethnographic accounts of improvisers. Improvisation is situated as a dynamic process of developing preferences based on cultural acquisition, which enables us to understand the different approaches developed by improvisers and broader cultural differences between musical systems. The relationship between improvisation and culture necessitates a rethinking of the way that we listen to and analyse the products of interculture.

In my thesis, I examine the discursive space of the detective fiction genre following Kasai Kiyoshi's periodization in his two-volume seminal work Tantei shosetsuron (The Theory of Detective Fiction, 1998). I investigate how Japanese detective fiction has developed in relation to Japan's modernization, industrialization, nationalism, and globalization, specifically in the 1920s-30s, the 1950s-60s, and from the 1990s to present. By historicizing the discursive formation of the genre in decisive moments in Japanese history, I examine how Japanese detective fiction delineated itself as a modern popular literature differentiating itself from serious literature (junbungaku) and also from other genres of popular fiction (taishu bungaku). My study exposes the socio-political, cultural and literary conditions that conditioned the emergence of the detective fiction genre as a problematic of Japanese society, stitching fantasy and desire for the formation of the national subject in the cultural domain. I investigate the dynamics through which Japanese detective fiction negotiates its particularity as a genre differentiating itself from the Western model and domestically from the conventional crime stories of the Edo and Meiji periods. Chapters One through Three of my study examine Japan's socio-cultural contexts after the Russo-Japanese war, specifically magazine culture and the rise of the detective fiction genre (Chapter I), the I-novel tradition and its relation to the genre (Chapter II), and representations of Tokyo as an urban center, focusing on Edogawa Ranpo's "Inju" (Beast in the Shadows, 1928) (Chapter III). Chapters Four through Six investigate the socio-cultural contexts after World War II, especially Japan's democratization in the 1950s-60s and the rearticulation of the genre through repeated debates about authenticities in Japanese detective fiction (Chapter IV), and the transition from tantei shosetsu (detective fiction) to suiri shosetsu (mystery) focusing on Yokomizo Seishi's Honjin satsujin jiken (The Honjin Murder Case, 1946) and Matsumoto Seicho's Ten to sen (Points and Lines, 1957) as representative works of the two trends (Chapter V), and finally the postmodern "return" to the prewar tradition in the 1990s (Chapter VI).

Annotation:
The thesis examines the representation of China in American mainstream newspapers in the intersection of media discourse, knowledge and power. It addresses the following research questions: In what ways has China been defined and represented in the American press? How have linguistic tools been employed to construct China in particular ways? How have such representations and discourse concealed racialised ideology of the press and unequal power between cultures and nations? These research questions are answered through an interdisciplinary approach combining critical discourse analysis (CDA) and a postcolonial perspective. The American press coverage of the 2014 “Occupy Central” event in Hong Kong, of the 2015 China’s 70th victory anniversary against Japan’s fascist aggression, and of China-Africa relations between 2013-2016 are selected for the CDA analysis. Deconstructing the dominant media discourse, the thesis additionally provides alternative interpretations through contextualisation and re-establishing historical connectivities between China as a semi-colonised nation and western colonialism and imperialism. It thus allows the subjectivity of the colonised and oppressed, and a space where the “subaltern” could speak for herself rather than being spoken about as a mere object. The study finds that American mainstream media has discursively constructed China in a way that is resonant with the racialised “Yellow Peril” imagery and ideology of the imperialist and colonial times. It argues that the construction of a contemporary “authoritarian” “threatening” China vis-a-vis a “democratic” “civilised” west serves to invoke colonial imaginaries and fantasies, inflict epistemic violence, and reproduce and reinforce the existing power structure between the “Self” and the “Other”. The study represents one of the first attempts to apply postcolonial theory and the CDA method in analysing the western media’s representation of China. As such, it contributes to an emerging critical theoretical reflection, and broader and genuinely open scholarly debates about discourse, domination, representation of the ‘Other’, ideology, and the imperative for epistemological decolonisation.

This paper aims to socialize a case study carried out in a municipal public school in Cascavel- PR, with the teacher and a group of students from fourth grade of elementary school. The research had the objective of investigating how the teacher s speech produces school math culture while teaching Math to students, taking into account the web of relations established in the classroom. A choice for a qualitative, ethnographic research was made for the development of the work. The considerations on the case was based on theoretical contributions of Foucault, D Ambrosio, Silva, Veiga-Neto, and some others contemporary theorists. Such considerations pointed to the relations among knowledge, power and truth that go through the teacher s discoursive practice in the interaction with the students in classroom, or in the production of school math culture. The results point to the fact that the social is built on a plurality of discourses that get intersectec in a complex game of power relations. In this game, speech does not reveal the individual s autonomy over his own knowledge; instead, individual-positions are noticed within the discourse. In this sense, the individuals express themselves in this game of power relations, according to the situation allowed by their social place, and in the same way individual-positions are built within a social formation, they determine and are determined by discoursive practices. From this, it was concluded that the production of school math culture is straightly connected to power, knowledge and truth relations that permeate the discoursive practices of Mariana, the Math teacher, in the interaction with her students. Her practice determines and is determined by the discourse order of Math and Math education to which the teacher is subordinated, given the position that the person has at the educational institution.

Abstract: This research aims to understand the aspects of innovation, manipulation and change of the auditorium TV show genre. For this, the analyses dedicate to describe and to compare two auditorium TV shows: Manos e Minas and Altas Horas. We intend to know which the aspects of innovation, manipulation and change of this genre are and how stability and innovation are linked in order to contribute to a better understanding of the relatively stable nature of discourse genres. Based on the articulation between the theories about discourse genres and theories about multimodal genres, we favor the description and analysis of the general auditorium TV show structure and themes privileged by each one. Manos e Minas aims to bring 'the voice of the periphery' to the television media for the recovery of the practices of this community and Altas Horas to interview public figures and to interact with the local audience on topics of current and / or concerning to the life of its guests. Both TV shows share the same conventions which the genre is structured on - the social actors and the semiotic resources -, but the differences arise from the specific social values which the goals of each one are anchored in. We understand, therefore, that the innovation displayed by Manos e Minas in relation to other examples of auditorium TV show genre is the commitment to the formation of a class consciousness. As a result, the structure of the production of this TV Show is focused on the interests and issues of Brazilian peripheries, presenting a link, not only with entertainment, but mostly with art, culture and politics. Regarding to Altas Horas, this is an exemplar of the auditorium TV show genre which shares with other TV shows the same goal: the entertainment based on social values of the large media. In relation to structural elements of the auditorium TV show genre, it derives its thematic organization from the interrelationship among (i) social value system, linked to specific social groups; (ii) linguistic conventions concerning to the referencing practices and to the choice of a range of topics; (iii) the world as depicted on the television by social actors legitimate representatives of this world and also (iv) the manipulation of multisemiotics resources

In recent years, an explicitly sexualised style of femininity has become more visible in Western media and societies, accompanied by the idea that women can freely choose to use this mode of sexuality to signify their empowerment. This emergence of ‘raunch culture’ has sparked significant debates within the feminist literature as to how female agency should be conceptualised in a context wherein the seemingly continued objectification of women has come to be widely (re)interpreted as reflecting female empowerment and choice. This study seeks to contribute to these debates through a discursive analysis of talk produced in a series of focus groups with seventeen women, in which they discussed the raunch culture phenomenon and some of the related feminist arguments that have been raised. Whilst the participants frequently drew on the notions of ‘confidence/self-esteem’, ‘choice’ and ‘doing it for yourself’ as a defence for women’s participation in raunch culture, an underlying ambivalence and sense of discomfort about the quest for ‘empowerment’ via raunchiness was detected in their talk, though this was only rarely expressed as an explicit social critique of the gendered aspects of their lives. These findings are discussed in relation to the ways in which the participants’ use of these discourses allows them to position themselves as autonomous and freed from gendered constraints, as well as where these discourses become insufficient.

Set in the context of an ever-increasing culturalisation of wine, this micro-sociological approach to contemporary œnophilic discursive practices in Luxembourg focuses on both inherent normativity and ordinary appropriation. The historical evolution is viewed through its rationalisation, leading to a governmentality of consumption. Its institutionalisation, in the form of evening-classes, conveys an epistemic type of normativity. The public which frequents this institution has forms of motivations which correspond to an interiorisation of experiences. The normativity is appropriated according to tactical usages. On the domestic level, the œnophiles' logics of action are stratégie and focused onto their personal and social life. Nonetheless, it is the aesthetic-based œnophilic canonisation that contains essential prerequisites of their sense of subjectivation. This shows the flexible interweaving of norms and pleasure, which lead to a personal and social empowerment

This dissertation intended to utter cultural and discursive impressions in two North American film advertisements disclosed for the Portuguese and Brazilian audience in movie theaters and video rental shops. The theoretical background was based on the theory of Discourse Analysis (French-oriented) and Culture, as well as respective identity formations, as a manner of expression of ideas, feelings, behaviors, ideologies and sense effects. It was followed by a brief history on how the English, Portuguese and Brazilian languages were formed in order to understand cultural differences encountered in language and by a presentation of matters arising out of advertisements, comprised of title and image, whose cultural production is meant for the film audience. In consultation to the cinema history, advertisements of Miss Congeniality (2000) and It s a Wonderful Life (1946) were selected, evidencing that the disclosure of North American ideology a is not a feature pertaining to a certain decade and that the title thereof is not inclined to be literal as time passes by as it was expected by the massive influence of the English language as a worldwide language. Upon the analysis of these impressions, it was observed the difference of use within the same language - the Portuguese - as a manner of expressing the North American culture against Portuguese and Brazilian cultures.
